Roland Academy new Adobe Illustrator Course Roland DG UK has announced that the Roland DG Academy will shortly start offering Adobe Illustrator modular courses, giving users the chance to utilise Roland DG technology even more effectively in their businesses. Targeted at those who want to expand their graphic knowledge in Illustrator, and integrate the software into their print workflow, or just expand their knowledge of the popular design software, the course consists of two flexible modules spread across two full day sessions. The first module offered consists of a full overview for basic or novice users, allowing them to utilise the software to its full potential, which
will help develop more efficient design processes. Attendees will be taught about basic shape editing, creating cutlines, and how to make use of the many tools Illustrator offers print businesses to make their job easier and more efficient. For those interested in learning more about Illustrator, but already have an understanding of the basics, an intermediate/advanced module is also available at an additional cost, allowing attendees to develop a deeper understanding of the many tools and workflows possible, including elements such as clipping masks, compound paths, transparencies, advanced layering, exporting and many other useful insights.
For maximum training flexibility, it is possible to attend both courses consecutively for those that want a more intensive training programme, to attend just one of the two days to meet the needs of the individual or business, or to split attendance over time to allow for personal development in between sessions. Joe Wigzell, Academy and Creative Centre Manager at Roland DG UK, said: “We’re pleased to have another chance to offer our end users our expert knowledge, and allow their businesses to improve as a result. Route One Installs HP Indigo 10000 Route One Print has added an HP Indigo 10000 to its growing arsenal of digital presses in efforts to improve efficiency, reduce turnaround times, maintain competitive prices and expand its product range. It’s an exciting move for the trade printer, which is currently the UK’s fastest growing print company. According to co-founder, Adam Carnell, the installation of the HP Indigo 10000 will bring even more opportunity for the company to expand. ‘We’re really excited about the HP Indigo. Not only does it offer exceptional print quality, but as it is B2 format, we’ll be able to produce smaller runs on products that were previously only printed lithographically, such as presentation folders. This will enable us to offer a wider product range and more options for our customers.’ To run in line with the HP Indigo, Route One Print has also purchased the Horizon Smart Stacker, which uses photo sensors to collate, cut, trim and stack products without the need for manual intervention. The purchase marks the first time in the UK that the HP Indigo 10000 and the Horizon
Smart Stacker have been installed together. ‘This is our first move to inline finishing, which is something that will benefit both company growth and our customers in a huge way.’ Mr Carnell says. ‘Using the Indigo and Smart Stacker together will reduce man power, streamline production and improve efficiency so that orders can be printed, finished and out the door faster than ever.’
Mr Carnell continues, ‘It also works to reduce both waste and error, which will allow us to increase capacity and keep our prices sharp.’ Thanks to these capabilities, Route One Print is now in a firm position to serve market demand and customer expectations for quick turnaround digital work. Its plan going forward is to offer same day dispatch, something that will no doubt be beneficial to its client base.
‘The majority of our customers are print resellers who are working to tight deadlines.’ Mr Carnell adds. ‘With the introduction of automated finishing through the HP Indigo and Smart Stacker, we’re confident that we can deliver a faster, more stable process while maintaining the same competitive prices that our customers have come to expect.’ www.route1print.co.uk

Antalis Digital Academy teams up with Leicester College Antalis, the Leicestershire-based distributor of paper, packaging solutions and visual communications products has teamed up with Leicester College to offer learners an opportunity to attend their highly successful Digital Academy workshops. The Digital Academy was launched in 2014, with workshops created exclusively to help Print Service Providers expand their knowledge and understanding of digital printing and product applications. To date, more than 400 delegates have attended workshops covering over 10 different topics, acquiring new skills to drive their businesses further forward. Antalis are delighted to be sharing the resources of the Digital Academy with Leicester College, one of the largest and most successful colleges in the UK. Offering a wide range of printing courses, the college is keen to develop training opportunities with local companies, such as Antalis, to give their students a solid head start upon entering the jobs market. The most recent workshop took place at Antalis’ head office in Coalville, whereby a group of Leicester College students were given the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of colour management. They were duly impressed with the Digital
Academy’s facilities and found the session both beneficial and insightful. One of them, Annabel Beaumont, reported that the experience at the Academy was friendly, professional and worthwhile, observing: “I have just started my college course in print and the workshop has provided me with the building blocks to develop my knowledge”. Chris Spooner, business development manager for Leicester College, comments: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Antalis in their unique Digital Academy and are most grateful to them for
funding what will be a valuable learning experience.” Giles Bristow, digital support manager for Antalis, adds: “Education and training are key in securing the future prosperity of the dynamic, ever-changing market that is digital printing. With Leicester College being at the forefront of printing NVQs and apprenticeships, we are very pleased to be developing closer ties with them in order to promote training and careers within our sector.” Details of all the workshops available can be found on the Digital Academy page of the Antalis d2b website: www.digital2business.co.uk
Go Creative Showcase
Following a hugely successful drupa exhibition, Fujifilm UK will host an open house from 27th to 29th September at their headquarters in Bedford — giving UK printers who did not make it to Düsseldorf the opportunity to see first-hand some of the Fujifilm products that created such a stir. Making its official UK debut at the Go Creative Showcase will be the Acuity LED 3200R UV inkjet printer. Launched at drupa, this machine will run live demonstrations and produce mock-up samples
at the open house event — allowing those who have not yet had the chance, to see for themselves, the extraordinary quality and productivity it can achieve. The Acuity LED 3200R builds on the notable success of the LED 1600 and 1600 II — but with an extended print width of 3.2m, and increased print speeds of up to 110m2 per hour. The Acuity LED 1600 II will also be demonstrated and attendees can expect attractive incentives on both the Acuity LED 1600 II and the Acuity 3200R. Headlining Fujifilm’s drupa presence and set to be a star of the Go Creative Showcase as well — with tutorials held throughout the day — the Jet Press 720S is leading the market in inkjet technology with nearly 100 units sold to date. Having sold the UK’s first Jet Press 720S in the lead-up to drupa — Fujifilm was delighted to take more UK orders (to be announced in due course) at the show. The tutorials will showcase the extraordinary print quality of the Jet Press and highlight the successful business models from existing customers. The Jet Press 720S tutorials outline the unique benefits this machine can offer and will be held
throughout the Go Creative Showcase event, all attendees are welcome to take part. Also being demonstrated will be the market leading workflow XMF, the Acuity Select 38 flatbed printer as well as many samples of creative print. Says Keith Dalton, Managing Director of Fujifilm UK: “We welcomed a huge number of UK customers onto the stand at drupa and were delighted that many of them placed orders while they were there. Importantly, these were all orders for commercially available products — which are transforming businesses today — rather than simply the collection of deposits for machines that are not yet on the market. The Go Creative Showcase offers a second chance to UK printers, who didn’t make it to drupa, to see some of Fujifilm’s leading products in action, and to receive expert advice on product packages tailored to their businesses.” 27-29th September 2016 (10am-5pm each day. Telford Repro turns to Duplo
Digital printing company Telford Repro has extended its range of Duplo finishing equipment with its latest investment — a Duplo DC-616 PRO slitter/cutter/creaser, purchased through its long-standing supplier, Docu-Finish Solutions in Stourport-on-Severn, Worcestershire. The all digital operation has been in business since 1994 and today runs four high-powered Konica Minolta digital presses that are printing short run, fast turnaround work that is generally despatched the same-day. The company invested in a Duplo DBM-150 booklet maker with DSF-2200 sheet feeder just over a year ago to take some of the pressure off the finishing department, but bottlenecks remained in the process, with sheets of business cards, for example, having to be cut on a
guillotine, and creasing on an offline rotary creaser. Consequently, Telford Repro went back to its trusted finishing equipment partner Docu-Finish Solutions for advice, and the Duplo reseller suggested the DC-616 PRO system, which is perfect for the short run, on-demand digital printer. Capable of up to 25 cuts and 20 creases in a single pass, the automated multi-function finishing system is compact and easy to use, with PC controller software and touchscreen operation. As well as slitting, cutting and creasing, it can also perforate in the same pass. “We looked at Duplo and the competitors and we found that the DC-616 PRO just did that little bit more,” said Peter Llewellyn, Managing Director of Telford Repro. “It had one or two aspects, such as the types of creasing and the number of cuts, that singled it out as the most suitable for the applications we run. “The new machine enables us to put an SRA3 sheet of business cards in one end and it cuts, separates and provides ready-stacked business cards at the other. It also creases and trims very accurately. The automated, barcode-driven set-up process means we can load it up and walk away to do something else, and we know the output will be good. We’ve only had it for a couple of months but already it has proved to be extremely beneficial and certainly has saved us a lot of time, which saves us
MailaDoc invests in Xerox iGen 5 Press MailaDoc, an innovative print and mailing company based in Somerset, has invested in the Xerox iGen 5 Press to expand its digital print offering and support its ambitious plans for growth, which has already seen the company double in size over the last two years. MailaDoc plans to leverage the extensive features of the iGen 5 to further expand its customer base, of over 1,000, which spans sectors including retail, sport and automotive. The investment in the iGen 5 enables MailaDoc to offer its customers a fifth colour option, enhancing its ability to match a wider variety of PANTONE colours and ensure consistency with its customers’ branding, as well as utilise the press’s 660mm sheet size. “Ever since the creation of MailaDoc in 2009, we have been committed to offering our customers the very best in digital printing,” said Jon Horler, head of operations, MailaDoc. “Our investment in the Xerox iGen 5 Press increases our capacity to turn around large printing jobs more efficiently and to tight deadlines, ensuring that we will continue to grow and be competitive in the market.” With the iGen 5 MailaDoc now has a fleet of 10 Xerox mono and colour devices including a recently installed Xerox Nuvera 144 MX Digital Production System. “We have a longstanding relationship with MailaDoc and have enjoyed seeing the company’s success over the last few years,” said Mike Holyoake, general manager, Graphic Communications, Xerox U.K. “We are confident that the addition of the Xerox iGen 5 will continue to support the company’s impressive growth.” Learn more at www.xerox.com
money. It has proved to be a great acquisition.” Mr Llewellyn added that the company has always found Duplo equipment to be well-made and reliable, and that support and problem solving from either Docu-Finish Solutions or Duplo has always been very good. “I first showed Peter the DC-616 PRO when we visited Duplo’s Northern Lights exhibition last year and we’ve been talking about it since,” said Stuart Granger of reseller Docu-Finish Solutions. “The objective for Telford Repro is to become as automated as possible, and the DC-616 PRO will speed up their entire slitting, cutting and creasing process, as well as giving them better accuracy than they had before. With Duplo equipment you always know it will be reliable, and in Telford Repro’s market — where everything is needed instantly — that reliability is crucial.” Angela Osborne, Digital Finishing and Office Division Manager for Duplo UK, said: “Telford Repro is a long-term, highly-valued customer of Duplo. It was looking for a smoother flow of work through the factory and we’re delighted that our partner Docu-Finish Solutions came up with an ideal answer in our DC-616 PRO. It’s the perfect system for a company with the mix of work and turnaround demands that Telford Repro has.” www.duplouk.com
Epson increases production to meet high demand
Epson has reported significant orders across its range of printers from companies following the drupa expo. “We have had a very successful show,” says Duncan Ferguson, Executive Director, Professional Printing & Robotics, Epson Europe. “This was Epson’s biggest ever showcase for our most complete range of inkjet printers for prepress, signage, photographic, textile and label applications. The stand was extremely busy with huge interest from visitors from around the globe and we are delighted with the high number of significant orders generated.” Interest in the new SureColor SC-S signage range of printers was so high that Epson has increased production in order to keep up with the surge in demand. The show launch of Epson’s new 44inch SureColor SC-P10000 wide-format printer was a resounding success with sales of 10 machines, including one to Picto in France which will be installed alongside their three 64inch SC-P20000s already onsite. The SurePress L-6034VW digital label press attracted significant attention with orders from around Europe. The SurePress L-4033AW press proved popular too with a number of global sales made, including the US and Dubai. Within the print shop zone, Epson showed how its desktop solutions could enable companies to offer a collaborative design-and-print service to produce a wide variety of personalised products on a vast range of substrates. The new ColorWorks C7500 label printer alongside the SC-F2000 direct-to-textile printer in particular, drew in the crowds by demonstrating the potential to build new business streams, without compromising on quality and at an affordable price. www.epson.co.uk

Premier supports Chernobyl’s children charity The Premier Paper Group has recently proudly given its support to Longridge Print and their chosen charity, Friends of Chernobyl’s Children, a charity aimed at providing opportunities for the families and children affected by the Chernobyl disaster. The Friends of Chernobyl’s Children charity provides a range of opportunities for the children to experience, including a wide variety of outdoor activities that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to enjoy back home. The charity works to relieve the suffering of children from the resounding after-effects of the 1986 nuclear disaster, which is still devastating families across povertystricken Belarus. It funds yearly visits to the UK for children from the most desperate circumstances in the contaminated area of Belarus. For a month each year, the children receive recuperative healthcare, English lessons, and most importantly lots of loving tender care from their UK host families.
Whilst the children were over in the UK, Premier sponsored a weekend woodland camping experience with Tim Kirwin and his team at Wilder Things UK, in conjunction with The Woodland Trust, the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity. Tim is the leading figure of Wilder Things UK, an organisation with many years’ experience and an unparalleled enthusiasm for all things woodland and tree related. Tim inspires people to love their woodland the natural
surrounding environment. Some of the activities that the children got to experience and take part in with Wilder Things UK included; learning how to prepare and cook meals over an open fire, build mini dens, as well as building fires and learning how to make their own bows and arrows. Despite the unpredictable weather, spirits were far from dampened and an excellent fun and enjoyable experience was shared by all.
Speaking about the weekend event Tim stated, “The kids were so enthusiastic and got involved in everything I challenged them with. I thought the day went absolutely brilliantly and Neil and his team were so supportive. Thanks to all involved for inviting me along and thanks to Premier Paper for funding my time.” Premier Paper has 30,000 tonnes of paper held throughout its branch network, offering some 5,500 different product items, from many of the world’s leading paper manufacturers, including the UK market’s widest selection of media for digital printing. The Premier Paper Group endeavours to be an integral and valuable part of its customers’ business providing first class services, sharing its extensive knowledge and information, offering advice and a choice of quality products. www.paper.co.uk www.focc.org.uk www.wilderthings.co.uk
Luxury holiday from Hybrid is added bonus Winner of Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services’ Sign & Digital UK competition, Martin Cherry (otherwise known as Stan to one and all) of Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions, got more than he bargained for when he visited this year’s show. Not only did he place an order for a new Mimaki JFX200-2513 flatbed printer with specialist reseller Granthams, but his demo at the show secured him a place in Hybrid’s prize draw to win a luxury holiday at Spanish resort, La Manga Club. “We were delighted to not only receive Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions’ order for the new Mimaki, but to pick Stan’s name out of the hat as well,” said Hybrid’s National Sales Manager — Industrial Products, Stuart Cole. “The prize draw was open to everyone who demoed a Mimaki during the show with one of our resellers, providing an opportunity for visitors to get up close and personal with the latest technology.” Stan wins flights, transfers and accommodation for four people in a luxury villa at La Manga Club — a fabulous 1,400-acre sporting
paradise nestled between the Murcian Hills and the Mediterranean Sea, famous for its superb golf courses and world leading sports facilities. “Sign & Digital UK was a great opportunity for us to audition new kit and we were quickly convinced the Mimaki flatbed was the right machine for us,” proclaimed Stan. “Since the installation, the JFX200 has being running virtually non-stop, delivering stunning quality print at quite remarkable speeds. Being able to print direct to rigid substrates makes our whole
operation much more productive and profitable. Even operators not particularly familiar with Mimaki kit have found it easy to use. To be honest, our only regret is that we didn’t invest in one sooner!” Stan was also very complimentary about the support he received from Hybrid & Mimaki reseller, Granthams of Preston. “From our initial enquiry and demonstration we were skilfully guided through the whole process by Sue Hayward and her colleagues, who showed great expertise and professionalism — right through to the very efficient install.” “Sign & Digital UK 2016 was an excellent exhibition for Hybrid and its partners,” concludes Cole. “The uptake of Mimaki technology across all product ranges was significant and we were extremely pleased to present the prize to Stan. We’re sure he will have a wonderful holiday and we look forward to a great future of working with Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions too. www.ebbsfleetprinters.co.uk www.granthams.co.uk

Mimaki innovates colour matching
Mimaki is adding value to the print production process with innovative software solutions that drive accurate, brilliant colour, attracting attention in an ever more colourful world. Three new software solutions highlight this innovative approach; the Artista Textile Color Collection, Mimaki Profile Master 3 (MPM3) for advanced printer profiling, and RasterLink6 Version 5.0. All are designed to help printers deliver accurate, repeatable colour across multiple devices and locations. Digital Textile Printing: Coming of age — In the textile industry, the shift from analogue to digital production is underway as textile and apparel manufacturers aim at achieving faster time to market, reducing inventories and increasing flexibility to address rapidly evolving trends. Yet colour matching remains a significant issue due to the lack of a standardised colour chart that enables colour consistency from design through production. Mimaki is filling that gap with the Artista Textile Color Collection, making it faster and easier for textile and apparel manufacturers to achieve the desired colour without wasteful trial and error. Mimaki intends to expand the collection over time, but it initially includes 520 colours for sublimation printing, including fluorescent inks making it ideal for sports apparel and interior fabrics. By integrating the process into the workflow, the production of colour across multiple locations is made efficient
and consistent. The process starts with a designer specifying colours based on new swatches made available for Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW. An image file based on the selected colour palette is then printed on a Mimaki printer using either the RasterLink6 or TxLink3 RIP software. In addition to colour-accurate images, the resulting standard includes detailed information about profiles and settings that can be used to reduce the time required for colour matching, thus enabling colours to be represented accurately across printers and locations. The initial collection is designed for use with the Mimaki TS300P-1800 textile printer with dye sublimation inks. Exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, the company’s National Sales Manager — Textile & Apparel, Stephen Woodall comments, “Controlling colour, including the new fluorescent shades throughout the design and print process is a vital tool in delivering quality printed textiles. Mimaki’s focus on streamlining that is of significant benefit to our end users.” Fast colour matching across media types and printers — Media affects colour appearance, making it difficult to match colour across different media types and using different printers. Mimaki is simplifying this process with the new Mimaki Profile Master 3 (MPM3) colour management software. It enables users to reproduce equivalent colours when printing on different types of media with the same printer or when printing with different printer models and inks, vastly increasing the flexibility of a production platform, even when it consists of printers from multiple vendors. It’s easy to use, requiring no special colour knowledge and speeds the integration of new
printers into the mix, ensuring excellent colour matching across the entire platform. This makes it easier to split up larger jobs across multiple printers or produce projects that include pieces printed on a variety of printers, reducing cycle time and increasing quality and consistency. Print colour is consistently maintained over time by measuring colour with a colorimeter during the printer calibration process. RasterLink6 now includes the PANTONE Color Collection — Mimaki’s market-leading printer RIP software, RasterLink6, now includes the PANTONE Color Collection, widely used around the globe for colour matching. This is in addition to the Adobe® Illustrator compatible DIC colour collection and Mimaki’s original colour collections including metallic. PANTONE colours in print files are automatically detected and converted to equivalents for faster colour matching on RasterLink6-driven printers. This saves time, reduces waste, and is easy to use with no professional expertise required. RasterLink6 Version 5.0 also delivers the ability to set a measured colour as a replacement colour, saving steps in the process. Frequently used colours can be stored in a customised colour collection for fast retrieval. In addition, this latest version enables the creation of cut marks for FOTOBA cutters. Marks can simply be placed on the RasterLink6 operation window without the need to use any other design software. Mimaki states its objective with these three new software packages is to bring to market solutions that ease production for its users along with improving profitability. Watkiss helps FT Solutions go bigger — and smaller The print department at Hertford’s FT Solutions Ltd has just upgraded its finishing capability with the installation of a Watkiss PowerSquare 224 bookletmaker. The new machine stitches, folds, spine-forms and trims in one pass and is uniquely versatile, according to Operations Manager Kevin Abraham. “This machine produces books with a square spine, similar to perfect bound products, but at a lower cost and with less effort,“ says Mr Abraham. “Our aim was to increase the pagination of our stitched books, typically training manuals and other documents for
the financial services sector. The PowerSquare allows us to produce up to 224 pages depending on stock.” The PowerSquare has also been very useful as part of a an exciting new project. FT Solutions is pioneering the very latest in 3D printing technology with a walk-in 3D scanning booth and the ability to produce extraordinarily life-like figurines. The company is now marketing collectable figurines of famous footballers. “When we package up a figurine, we need to produce very small booklets as part of the package. We were delighted to discover that the PowerSquare is
versatile enough to do this for us inhouse,” says Mr Abraham. “So we don’t just miniaturise people — with the PowerSquare we can miniaturise our print too!” FT Solutions Ltd is a substantial brand management business with an international client base. It has four premises, 110 staff and an annual turnover of over £20m. Its print department has a range of digital machines and a line up of finishing equipment including two more machines from Watkiss — a Mamo laminator and Mamo Perfect binder. www.watkiss.com

Book edge printing is new Komfi option Thermal laminating machine supplier Komfi has introduced its latest innovation — a book edge printing machine. Designated the imiJET BE70, the new machine is specifically designed for digital UV printing on book edges using inkjet technology. As with its laminators, the new Komfi imiJET BE70 is robust and durable in design and construction: it is semi-automatic in operation, and features an integrated PC that provides built-in help and self-diagnostics, as well as easy job preparation. It has also been developed to provide fast and comfortable maintenance. The printing process is a simple, one person operation via a user-friendly screen, and involves the application of either UV inks or UV varnish to all

JETRIX LX5 LED UV at Bex Design and Print The newly launched JETRIX LX5 LED UV Printer might only have just arrived on our shores; yet it has already been sold and installed. Clearly the appeal of the very first LED UV Printer from JETRIX has not been lost on Bex Design. Priding themselves on being design and print specialists, who can print onto almost anything, this latest addition to their printer portfolio will not only extend their digital print capability even further, but also add the much needed capacity required to fulfil on-going customer and market demands. This new printer delivers up to a 35% energy saving than a mercury lamp printer, plus the JETRIX LX5 benefits from having no required warm-up time, less heat generated and an extended lamp lifetime (of up to 20k hours). All this is wrapped up with the added reassurance of all the design, technology and precision familiar with any of the current JETRIX printer range, plus the active service support that InkTec offer. As Ian Board, Managing Director of Bex Design says, “We were holding out for the first LED printer from JETRIX, as we have been so impressed with the reliability and adaptability of our current printer — the JETRIX 2513 — so it was a no brainer when we heard that JETRIX were going to offer an LED UV printer. The biggest appeal for us was having a printer that will deliver everything that our current JETRIX gives us, and more — environmentally friendly with instant drying capabilities, which means we can print on more diverse materials than before and extend our customer offering even further.” From the JETRIX perspective, Ben Woodruff, Head of National Sales highlighted “We are obviously delighted that our very first LED UV Printer has been sold to a long-standing valued UK customer. Our belief in the tried and tested JETRIX technology and the response to the rising market need for increasingly efficient printers, meant that we really had to deliver a LED UV printer that over its lifetime could offer a realistic and affordable total cost of ownership and this is exactly what the LX5 achieves.” www.inktec-europe.com

Cut, perf and crease in new dimensions with Duplo Duplo UK is bringing a powerful and versatile new multifinishing device to the print market, the Multigraf Touchline CPC375. Its principal functions are length and cross cutting, cross creasing up and down, and both timed and continuous perforation in either length or cross directions. For lengthways perforation, it can be equipped with up to four perforating heads. Due to its dual tool module mount and a cross knife in conjunction with lateral rotating longitudinal knives, the CPC375 can perforate, cut and crease in a single operation. Such versatility means that applications such as vouchers, coupons, tickets and reply cards can be produced extremely quickly, with great finishing quality and in short or longer runs. Demonstrating its power, the Touchline CPC375 is capable of cutting and creasing paper weights from 80 to 400 gsm, and perforating materials up to 300 gsm. A vacuum conveyor enables sheets to be fed from the new high capacity Mistral Feeder (a universal stacking feeder), or inline from a printing system. Maximum sheet size is 370 x 1200 mm. Additional features include a patented unit for quick and easy tool changeovers. Tools are detected electronically, the working depth is selected on the touch screen monitor and the system then adjusts automatically for the job. Adobe launches PDF Print Engine 4 Adobe has announced the availability of the fourth version of Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE 4), Adobe’s high-speed, high-fidelity print platform used by the leading print equipment manufacturers, and running in more than 150,000 print operations around the world. As the fastest and most reliable PDF rendering technology, APPE 4 will deliver new performance efficiencies and breakthrough colour features to extend Adobe’s market-leading print technology and capitalise on the profit potential of new innovations. Print operations are embracing the best practices of connected manufacturing — “Industry 4.0” — while inkjet and nano technologies are being rapidly adopted in packaging, labelling, textile, signage, ceramics, photography, publishing and personalised direct mail. Adobe has worked to advance these segments, partnering with leading manufacturers of digital presses, wide format printers and Digital Front Ends (DFEs). The launch of APPE 4 marks
a decade of success for Print Engine. Today, hundreds of different products are powered by APPE — from digital production presses and label presses, to wide format inkjet printers, to platesetters for traditional printing (offset/flexo/gravure).
New in Adobe PDF Print Engine 4 • Tile Parallel Processing (TPP) brings the efficiencies of the Mercury RIP Architecture to wide format printing. TPP accelerates system performance by breaking up large assets, like a poster, retail
sign or architectural drawing, into smaller sections, each of which is assigned to a separate instance of APPE, running on a separate CPU core. By processing multiple tiles in parallel, then seamlessly reassembling them, TPP significantly reduces overall rendering time. • Performance is now 10 times faster for graphics consisting of a pattern, which repeats over an extended area. • Continuous shading effects are more fluid than ever. New algorithms developed by Adobe colour scientists smooth out long gradient
blends, especially at inflection points where hue can shift abruptly. • Spot colour handling has been expanded. Up to 127 colour channels can now be specified and used in any given region. The industry’s leading innovators are harnessing the power of APPE 4 in the next generation of print workflow products. For designers, APPE 4 offers the assurance that their artistic vision will be faithfully reproduced on press, with no unwanted surprises. APPE 4 shares the same core technologies used in Adobe InDesign CC, Illustrator CC, Photoshop CC and Acrobat DC, and has been optimised for the latest updates. This guarantees reliability across proofing cycles and reduces the need for last-minute fixes. PDF Print Engine 4 has been distributed to Adobe’s print partners. It will become available to printers throughout 2016, integrated into next-generation prepress solutions from the industry’s most respected vendors. www.adobe.com

PRINT CONFERENCE, 22 OCTOBER
UKDPN NATIONAL CONFERENCE Some 50 delegates from across the UK, all running their own print and design businesses will gather at the stunning venue that is Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire on Saturday 22nd October 2016. There is a full agenda in the conference room and regular breakouts through the day to network and to browse the exhibition located in the same building.
[T]
he keynote speaker this year is print marketing enthusiast Dee Blick of The Marketing Gym. Matthew Parker of Print & Procurement will be speaking to conference about outsourcing, and there will be this year`s four UKDPN marketing competition finalists giving their presentations, followed by a vote to determine the winner. The after dinner speaker in the evening is Kevin Connelly of Radio 4’s ‘Dead Ringers’. The UKDPN members Marketing Competition closing date is 12 September. All details from conference organiser: Paul Knapman, email: paul.knapman@blueyonder.co.uk. Exhibition sponsors booked so far are: Where the Trade Buys, EFI, CMYK Hub, The Group Scheme, Canon, Fast Forms and Xerox.
The UK Design & Print Network Running a successful independent design and print business is not the easiest thing in the world to achieve. In the past, many would-be print entrepreneurs started by joining a franchise, but since the collapse of the prominent franchise network in 2011, choices in this area are severely limited. As a result of this, a group of experienced and successful former franchisees formed the UK Design & Print Network (UKDPN). They welcome all independent design and print businesses to join them. UKDPN now comprises over sixty member businesses and includes a number of members who do not have a franchise background. The UKDPN is all about developing the businesses
of its members through self-help and mutual support. The group started by sharing ideas in an online forum. It then developed, to make the best use of its collective, multi-million pound, buying power and the UK Design & Print Network came into being.
Benefits of membership Apart from the incredibly helpful forum, sharing, knowledge, ideas, best practice and assistance with each other the UKDPN has succeeded in: • Negotiating great pricing deals from national and international suppliers. • Running an annual conference to learn and share ideas. • Organising events including product seminar days to assist with and understand new ways of growing our businesses. • Developing and expanding the online forum as a resource of advice and knowledge. Ask a question and someone on the forum will invariably have the answer. • If a member has a business problem, other members will invariably have dealt with a similar problem in the past.
How easy is it to join? The UKDPN is an organisation to benefit the members and share years of incredibly valuable knowledge to help us all deliver great service and solutions to our end customers. There is a very low annual membership subscription of £100 as a contribution to the costs
of the forum, seminar days and conference. Each year they run training courses for members at various locations around the country, which are also free of charge to attend. Past courses and seminars have covered subjects as varied as Selling Web Sites, AdWords, “Getting the most from your RIP” (hosted by EFI), Web Design and Cross Media. Their combined purchasing power is a significant. Apart from the paper and equipment deals that the purchasing team have negotiated as a bench mark for all their companies the biggest benefit is from knowledge sharing. An example of this was when one member was purchasing a Xerox J75. Knowledge shared on the forum ensured that the member had the click price lowered by 0.3p fixed for three years plus a lower capital purchase price. That deal alone would never have been achieved without being a member and will save him nearly £10K over the 4-5 year ownership. This is just one area where the collective wisdom of the members has helped a good deal to be achieved.
What does all this cost? Just £100 per year — but you can try it out for nothing! Apply for a trial account (free for three months and no obligation) to check out the UKDPN forum to see if membership works for you. You would not have access to any of the members deals during the trial period. To know more about the network please contact Paul Stokes on 07971 820 990 or email him at phs@paulstokes.eu. www.ukdesignandprintnetwork.co.uk

Konica Minolta to unleash new AccurioPro brand
Konica Minolta has revealed that it will use this year’s edition of The Print Show as a platform for the UK unveiling of AccurioPro, the new brand for its digital workflow solutions that it says ensure higher work efficiency and stable print quality. The digital print giant will be in attendance at the show for a second consecutive year, having re-signed prior to the conclusion of the inaugural event, such was the success of its presence in 2015. Building on this first year triumph, Konica Minolta has selected The Print Show as the UK event that it will use to launch the new brand in the UK. Unveiled at drupa, the AccurioPro brand comprises some of the most effective machinery on offer from the manufacturer, such as the bizhub PRESS C1100 and bizhub PRESS C71hc, which visitors this year will have the opportunity to see in operation. Bernard Cassidy, market development manager at Konica Minolta, said: “On our stand we will be demonstrating Accurio PRO Flux and Accurio PRO Color Care in conjunction with the bizhub PRESS

C1100 and bizhub PRESS C71hc, which uses High Chroma toner, delivers bold, intense and vibrant RGB colours and offers a print speed of 71 colour pages per minute.” Cassidy added that the manufacturer will also show off its software and finishing solutions, which he says are crucial to the overall print production process. “We will demonstrate how Konica Minolta’s software and finishing solutions are integral to ensuring printers get the most value out of their digital presses. We will be promoting our partnership with MGI Digital Technology and showcasing the MGI JV3DS iFoil which enables printers to spot varnish digital prints, highlight defined areas or add 3D effects, and with the newly introduced iFoil, printers can further complement these effects with inline embossing and hot foil stamping, with virtually no set-up and at high speeds.” “The SD-513 Saddle-Stitch Finisher which sets new standards in finishing quality and productivity will be making its UK debut at the show. We will be demonstrating how this addresses the demand to produce professional booklets in-line and ready to box, working in conjunction with the bizhub PRESS 1250e.” Reflecting on the company’s decision to re-sign for the show at such an early point, Cassidy said that Konica Minolta had a number of reasons for doing so. “The Print Show’s focus on the UK market is particularly relevant,” he said. “For Konica Minolta UK, it provides the perfect platform for us to further cement our position as a market leading production and industrial print solution provider. “We attended drupa earlier this year and that exhibition is key in that it enables us to come together as a global brand, but having a dedicated event for our home market, one that brings a number of the key players in our industry together in one place was much needed. “The Print Show provides the perfect opportunity for us to engage with people face to face, whether that’s to build on already strong existing customer and partner relationships, make new connections, or engage with potential buyers, which is in itself, a very valid reason to exhibit.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk
Xeretec to showcase Xerox Versant and iGen Xeretec is to display a selection of technology from the manufacturer at The Print Show this year, including the Xerox Versant 80 and 2100 HD production presses, while experts will also be on hand to showcase the profit boosting, waste saving, and capacity growing power of the Xerox iGen series. Having signed up for the event earlier this year, the supplier has so far remained tight-lipped on the technology it would unveil. But in an effort to boost an already-high level of interest in this year’s show, it has revealed its plans early on.
September 2016
The Xerox Versant 80 and 2100 HD will be shown with EFI workflow front end technology and colour management suite, which Susan Bayne group marketing executive in Scotland for Xeretec, said provides “fantastic quality and reliability”. Susan added: “They are ideal if you’re looking to adopt the latest in print technology to open up new revenue streams and new opportunities. There’s no doubt that the Versant range has the technology, solid Xerox-heritage and attractive price point to really accelerate the growth of your business.” Also on show at Xeretec’s stand will be the latest KIP wide-format colour printer, which Susan Bayne said delivers fast, low-cost colour, and black and white wide-format documents in high quality. Morgana to Show Next Generation Morgana Systems Ltd will give a UK show debut to the next generation DigiFold Pro and AutoCreaser Pro at this year’s Print Show event in Birmingham. The new machines take centre stage alongside the latest additions to the company’s booklet making systems. Commenting on the new DigiFold Pro 385, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, said: “The DigiFold has long been the benchmark product in the creaser/folder sector. With the improvements in speed and productivity for the current crop of digital print engines, Morgana needs to provide an additional option for our customers. After surveying our DigiFold users, we’ve been able to address what they need as their digital production grows.” One of the key changes from previous DigiFold models is the introduction of a high-capacity vacuum top-feeder that can take a sheet pile of up to 450mm. It will staple, fold and form a square spine on booklets up to 30 sheets for a variety of applications, including A4 landscape books. It features digital control for automatic set-up and the option of four staple heads, including loop stitches. Watkiss will also be showing a broad selection from their portfolio of print finishing equipment including booklet makers, perfect binders, laminators and guillotines. Commenting on Watkiss’s decision to exhibit at The Print Show, Attew explains “Last year’s event provided an excellent platform for engaging with existing and potential customers; and we concluded a lot of new business. We expect this year to be equally successful. We had a very busy drupa and we are keen to exhibit new products that were shown for the first time in Dusseldorf. We are a British company, manufacturing here in the UK; and whilst we are a major exporter, the UK print industry is very important to us. So we welcome the chance to see so many UK printers under one roof. We firmly believe that exhibitions are ‘a must’ – you can’t beat a hands-on demonstration and the opportunity to compare products from a range of different suppliers.” www.watkiss.com

THE INKJET CONFERENCE, DÜSSELDORF, 4-6 OCTOBER 2016
NEW INKJET MARKET PLAYERS TO JOIN THE IJC The world’s largest inkjet event returns to Swissôtel Düsseldorf/Neuss on 4-6 October 2016. More than 20% of the table tops have been booked by new exhibitors and 50% of delegates registered are new too.
[d]
rupa has been the supporting partner of The Inkjet Conference since its inauguration in 2014 and enabled creating a venue for 400 technology developers, engineers, chemists, researchers and decision makers. During the fair in June 2016 many of TheIJC delegates and exhibitors presented new products and solutions, and all of them confirmed they would join the conference in October. Given the numbers of registered newcomers and a setting for at least 70 table tops, a record breaking attendance is expected. Presentation titles already confirmed Over 50 companies have already confirmed and many of them have submitted their presentation titles with abstracts for review. Among the first-time exhibitors and presenters are: • Aleksander Bespalov from DPS Innovations with “Printhead controller boards for inkjet printheads and their role in the printing process” • Guy Evron from Velvet Jet with “Benefits of using pigment inks for textile printing” • Thomas Franz from Baumer Inspection with “Process monitoring of single pass printing by wide format image inspection” • Michael Gross from KIWO with “Resists and more: Industrial processes with inkjet printable resists” • Dr Tobias Kraus from Leibniz Institute for New Materials with “Sinter-free hybrid metal-polymer inks for printed and flexible electronics” • Jan Rops from Crown Van Gelder with “Future trends in inkjet paper” • Sean Smyth from Smithers Pira with “Drivers and barriers toward adoption of inkjet in packaging” • Joseph E. Ward from RJA Dispersions with “Nanopigment dispersions for industrial inkjet systems” The detailed and continuously updated list of presentation abstracts is available at http://theijc. com/event-program. The range of topics reflects the complete spectrum of components which contribute to the performance of an inkjet system. “Inkjet and digital cover a diverse range of topics and technologies, including precision engineering, chemistry, electronics, software, database management, hydraulic systems, surface science, colour management, inkjet printheads and of course a huge knowledge about the specific application.
In isolation each of these topics are quite straight forward, but it is their interaction and a weakness in any one of them that will affect system performance. Just as we start to understand one area, we discover several more to explore. To know where to start is always a challenge. TheIJC offers guidance for both newcomers and professionals from specific domains who want to broaden their expertise“, says Steve Knight, Co-founder of TheIJC.
Workshop spaces filling quickly Dedicated to its educational objectives, The Inkjet Conference 2016 has been extended with six workshop sessions on 4 October 2016. PIXEL PROPHET
IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER A picture paints a thousand words they said, even a hundred years ago when photography was still very basic and still mostly in the hands of the professionals. Now image capture is in everyone’s hands and paints a thousand or a million pixels. But, Martin Christie says, understanding, and manipulating those tiny bytes of information is still just as much a skill as it ever was and deserves to be treated with as much respect and recognition as any other profession.
[W]
ith the popularity of capturing and editing images through apps on mobile phones, digital manipulation seems simple as long as you only have to look at a small, brightly back-lit screen. And this has given the average person who has little computer knowledge, a chance to be creative, but without having the tools to prepare proper files for print purposes, let alone sort out colour correction and compostion for anything other than sharing on the small screen of a mobile phone. This has been an increasing issue in recent years as potential customers have moved onto mobile devices, and those devices — from the laptop to the iPad to the iPhone — have got smaller and smaller. Although they are proportionally much more powerful than their predecessors, the actual viewing screens are inevitably restrictive, so that accurate editing is very difficult. Even basic spell checking can be missed especially if predictive text has had a chance of altering the intended words. Second guessing spelling by machine intelligence has ironically given us a twenty first century version of the eighteenth century playright Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s Mrs Maloprop, who used words that sounded similar to the ones intended with hilarious results for the audience. A modern day malopropism for example would be Donald Trump’s surprise erection success. Now clever computers can anticipate words that start to look similar, with equally disastrous results all on their own, unless a human keeps them in check or bothers to look properly at the output. How often have you had customers these days say, “well, I thought you would check that”? Computer intelligence fails completely on words that are are spelt correctly, but are used in the wrong context. Hence the common phrase “bear with me” meaning please be patient with me is replaced by “bare with me” meaning why don’t we get naked together. When printing customers digital images, I usually do a little bit of image adjustment, usually to density, allowing for the fact they have previously only been seen on a small, bright screen. Trying to simulate the vibrancy of all those tightly packed pixels on a flat print is always going to be a challenge. But
How often have you had customers these days say “well, I thought you would check that”? on the basis that the customer is always going to complain about the printing, not the quality of their photography. It’s always better to get your retaliation in first and avoid confrontation at the counter. The other problem is customers who insist upon being creative with those lovely free apps, which may look great shared on social media, but have the effect of mashing all those smart pixels into coloured goo which is never going to look great in an enlargement unless, that is, it’s actually what they want it to look like. Then there are those customers, rare though they may be, that have a good image but realise that making improvements is beyond the push of one or two tabs, and seek the help of a professional. One of my regulars came in with such a task this month. Brighton has many lovely old buildings especially along its Georgian and Victorian seafront, but a recent addition has been an enormous steel tower which looks as appropriate as a cement mixer in a flower garden. The only people who could possibly love the i360 are the designers and those who will make money out of it. Could I make it disappear? No problem. There are apps that will perform this sort of trick but they are a quick dodge, and the results only convincing if viewed solely on a phone or suchlike. Doing it properly means getting rid of every nut, bolt and rivet when blown up. Anyone who has grown up with Adobe Photoshop will remember that this used to take painstaking cutting out and methodical cloning, and sometimes frustration trying to match colour seamlessly when you have variations in shades of blue in a clear sky. In recent years techniques of interrogating the individual pixels and comparing one with another have dramatically improved, and Adobe has benefitted from the advances made by pioneering software companies like Nik (now part of Google) and others. A feature called Content Aware has been around in
Photoshop since CS4 but it has now been refined to incorporate blending, filling and stretching parts of an image while taking account of the content around it. Like any feature in Photoshop there are several ways of using it, but they can generally be described as the quickest way, or the best way. Content Aware is very useful for quickly adding bleed to a file. Previously you could just increase the canvas size and add to a solid colour, or stretch the background, but neither were particularly satisfactory if there were variations in colour or content. Adding the extra margin, selecting the area and pressing the delete button on a flattened image will give you a quick fix. The same technique can be used to alter the shape or proportion of an image, adding sky or sea for example, anything that is easily blended. You can touch up any obvious edges with a soft clone tool or healing brush. I could show you this step by step, but it’s a bit boring and the whole point is that it’s a quick dodge. Once you’ve practised it a bit you will get to see how easily you can use it to save time, but also learn to recognise images that may be more of a problem, and therefore be able to advise the customer on the cost implications of the work involved. It’s not a precise science, but as long as you can come up with a reasonable estimate you will have covered yourself. The better, and more involved way of using Content Aware is to use layers. If you make a duplicate layer of the original background you can use that to work on. Make the background invisible by clicking the little eye icon in the Layers box. As long as it’s invisible it’s no longer active, and you are only working on the layer copy. Using a selection tool isolate the item to be altered or removed. In the case of the i360 I used the Lasso tool to capture the whole tower initially. There are three tool options, being simple, polygonal or magnetic, all of which behave in a slightly different way, and each of which might be slightly more suitable for the detail of the subject, or the accuracy
Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging
September 2016
of the selection. You may not even need to use the Lasso if the Marquee tool box or circle will isolate the item sufficiently. Again a little bit of practice will help you chose which tool is most useful in which case. With the selection made go to Edit >Fill rather than delete and this gives you the Content Aware option rather than background or foreground colour. Be sure the little “preserve transparency” box is unticked as it should be by default, and the area selected should magically disappear leaving a fairly seamless vista in its place. Any minor detail can be brushed over with soft Clone or Spot Healing. Having lost the main tower, there are still some ruins around the base and alongside the beautifully restored Victorian beach building as well as an ugly crane. The latter gets the same demolition treatment as the tower, but a little bit of copy and paste is needed to restore the delicate spires of the Victorian facade. The remains of the base of the tower facing onto the building on the right hand side are then isolated with the Lasso tool. If you wanted to be more precise you could create a path with the pen tool and convert it into a selection, but as this is quite a small part of the image overall, the Lasso works as well and the selection is cloned and healed manually to remove the obstruction, to reveal the sky but being careful not to remove the heads of the spectators. The original idea was just to clean up the seafront by removing the whole tower but then for a bit of fun we decided to turn the doughnut like pod which
vivid-online.com
23
acts as the viewing platform into a flying saucer and have it escaping from captivity. So, moving back to the original background, I used the pen tool to shape a precise path to cut out the glass oval and drop it into a new layer. To fill in the hole at the base where the stem of the tower used to be, I actually used the Content Aware Fill technique previously described, this time using an oval marquee to match the bottom shape of the pod. Not rocket science, but it did the job and produced a unique and amusing piece of artwork in less than an hour, from an otherwise humourless seafront view. Mastering these techniques in Photoshop is more than having a bit of fun. As a digital print shop we do a lot of Order of Service print runs for funerals as well as weddings and other special events. Particularly with funerals, the restoration of old, or not so old photographs, has become an integral part of the service, and one that has been very much appreciated. Even without a special occasion, people are starting to appreciate the value of a solid print as opposed to the more fleeting images on screen, and regret they haven’t taken more care of their priceless archives. The proverbial shoe box may contain untold horrors due to neglect but some of the dog earred content may be salvageable. If it is worth it, it can be done. Next month I will show you how this month’s fun fantasy technique can be used to recreate more serious history records.

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC UK), recently held its Annual Stakeholder Day, with the theme of this year’s event being; ‘Market Drivers for Certified Products’. The Stakeholder Day saw a breadth of speakers from the fields of retail, construction and brands provide informative insights into the market-based initiatives that are driving demand for certified products, sustainable forest management and the global role PEFC plays in developing certified forests. The Annual Stakeholder event, which was held at The Society of Chemical Industry in the heart of London’s Belgravia, was introduced by Chairman for the day, Julian Walker-Palin, a non-executive Director of PEFC International, and formerly Walmart’s Head of Corporate Responsibility at Asda. Julian said that, “The environment has never been more important than it is now, with sustainable development goals proving to be key drivers for certified products.” The keynote speech was provided by Ignacio Gavilan, Director of Sustainability for the influential global industry group, The Consumer Goods Forum (CGF). The CGF brings together more than 400 retailers, manufacturers and service providers, including major brands such as Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, L’Oreal, Nestle, P&G, Tesco and Asda-WalMart. Gavilan leads the CGF’s Sustainability team, which aims to position the consumer goods industry as a leader in protection against climate change and reducing waste. CEO led, and with its board members comprising of some 50 leading global CEO’s, the CGF was formed in 1960, and has developed into a leading forum on the issues of compliance and implementation surrounding product sustainability. The theme of Ignacio’s presentation was, ‘Zero Net Deforestation by 2020’, and the role of responsible sourcing in helping achieve this goal. The CGF recognises the important role that forest certification schemes such as PEFC’s can play, in providing companies with verification of legality and providing a low risk of controversial sources. Ignacio said, “Consumers need to trust the products they are buying, so transparency and the truth are big issues.” Other speakers included Martyn White, Manager of Sustainability for the John Lewis Partnership, who provided a retailer’s perspective on managing risk and enhancing brand value through responsible sourcing. As the UK’s largest coowned business, with some 91,500 partners and annual sales of £11bn, Martyn stated that John Lewis has a 2020 target, of having all its wood-based own brand products coming from sustainable sources. Steve Cook, Principal Sustainable Development Manager for Willmott Dixon, and with over 20 year’s experience in the construction sector, highlighted what the UK construction sector is doing to ensure that the timber it sources and uses comes from well-managed forests. PEFC International’s Sarah Price completed the speaker line up, delivering an update on PEFC’s work to grow certified forests to meet customer demand, and informing those gathered that so far, PEFC has Chain of Custody in 62 countries,
September 2016
totalling over 285m hectares. Currently there are over 450m hectares certified worldwide to both PEFC and FSC Chain of Custody standards, and, since 2013, PEFC has seen its share of certified forestry grow by 9%, whilst the overall growth for certification during that period was just 4%. Sarah revealed that of the United Nation’s17 Forest Certification and Sustainable Development Goals, PEFC is currently delivering against 14 of these. In addition, as global certification continues to grow to meet consumer demand, Sarah stated that new areas of growth are emerging, including South Africa, where some 1.5m hectares of productive forest land now have certified with PEFC Chain of Custody. A national standard is also currently being developed and pilot tested in conjunction with PEFC in South Africa, in the communal and smaller forest lands. Other areas for future growth include Thailand, where areas outside of the traditional forest areas are also being investigated as to their eligibility for forest certification. Again a national standard is also being pilot tested. Also in Nepal, where there are extensive forest resources available, multi-stakeholder dialogues on forestry and analysis of group certification are currently taking place. As part of the PEFC 2016 Collaboration Fund, Malaysia is also working on improving its knowledge and best practice management for rare and endangered tree species. The afternoon concluded with a short Q&A discussion session from the floor, which was then followed by a networking drinks reception. PEFC UK Chairman, Ross Bradshaw said: “More and more companies from SMEs to global brands are keen to demonstrate that the forest products they use come from certified sustainable sources. Consumers are increasingly conscious of the impact of their purchasing decisions and we hope those who joined us for this year’s stakeholder event gained a better understanding of the role market-based initiatives play in helping to secure a healthy future for the world’s forests.” www.pefc.co.uk

Print on paper carrier bags SAXOPRINT is now offering its business customers individually designed paper carrier bags. Paper carrier bags are available in three different types for customers of the online printing company. The paper carrier bags with optional die cut or rope handles are particularly suitable for use at exhibitions, allowing customers to carry catalogues and brochures. Carrier bags with twisted handles are also often used in stationary retail operations. Daniel Ackermann, managing director of SAXOPRINT said: “With the products in these new categories, we focused on the smaller details in particular. Reinforced edges offer high stability even under high stress, while the sealed ends of the handles prevent them from fraying. In the case of larger bags, the 9-mm soft handles with cotton filling also ensure that the bags are very comfortable to carry.” Paper carrier bags with rope handles and die cut handles are available in various sizes from miniature
bags (10 x 5 x 10 cm) and bottle bags (10 x 10 x 36 cm) to large bags (54 x 14 x 45 cm). The food-safe paper variants made from white/brown kraft paper (170gsm or 200gsm) and silk finish paper (190gsm or 240gsm) offer additional variety. To further improve the touch and strength, the print product can optionally be finished with silk or gloss lamination. Depending on the size of the bag, hand-length or shoulder-length rope handles are available with a thickness of 4 mm, 6 mm or 9 mm with cotton filling and in white, black, blue, red or grey colours. Alternatively, a 90 x 30-mm long, oval die cut handle can be selected. The white 120gsm kraft paper used in the paper carrier bags with black or white twisted handles can be fully printed due to the offset printing process. An optional cardboard base also ensures the required stability, while the various sizes of up to 31 x 12 x 41 cm allow the customer to customise the perfect bag for their individual needs.
SAXOPRINT offers the majority of its paper carrier bag sizes with the express production service option (i.e. ready within 10 working days rather than the standard 16). Sample sets with the SAXOPRINT design or, neutral samples for resellers, with a white label form are also available. www.saxoprint.co.uk
T.One – the impossible arrives
TheMagicTouch introduces a new and unique transfer paper that is considered a “game changer” for the image transfer garment decoration business. The new T.One™ transfer is a “One-Step” coated paper for use with the TMT/OKi whitetoner printers. The paper is the ultimate solution for cost effective garment transfer that involves no cutting, weeding and more importantly leaves no residue on the finished garment or textile. The
product has been marketed over the past four months to the existing “White-Toner” users in over 25 countries and has been an outstanding success. T.One™ transfer paper enables the user to print full colour (including white) designs to any pastel, white or non-dark garment/textile regardless of colour or composition. This includes cotton, polyester, denim, soft-shell, polypongee and most performance fabrics. The process is very economical when considering breast and sleeve logos where a full colour transfer is below 10p each. The new paper is an addition to the existing transfer paper range and compliments the existing “Two-Step” WoW transfer process that continues for all black and dark colour garments/textiles due to the higher white opacity requirement.
The T.One™ process is quick and easy with heat press application as low as 140°c to avoid any scorching or heat press marks on the garments. The printed transfer is then sealed using the supplied silicon sheet for our outstanding wash durability and great feel. The TMT/OKi white-toner printer with the incorporated SpaceControl RIP software offers a vast range of product applications onto many different substrates including dark mugs, PU surfaces, metal, wood, board and even human skin. The printer is inclusive of a comprehensive three year warranty. In addition to the T.One™ paper TheMagicTouch offer metallic foils that are applied direct to the printed T.One™ transfers. This enables complex and detailed metallic effects to be produced easily and again removes the need for any cutting or weeding, assisting to dramatically increase productivity and reduce costs. Jim Nicol, UK Managing Director confirmed “This great innovation makes it easier for our customers to capitalise on the continued success from producing personalised samples for customer evaluation that assists them in their sales and marketing, helping to create new business opportunities”. The company host a series of regional roadshows together with weekly “open house” events at their training facility in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. PEOPLE IN PRINT
PAPERWORKS TOUR FANTASTAK Paperworks, a dynamic social enterprise providing personalised support for individuals with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs, visited Fantastak’s manufacturing and distribution centre in Bradford.
[J]
ames Watling, Business Development Manager at Paperworks and four of Paperworks’ trainees — Ryan Dutton, Chung Wong, Jack Harris and Gurdesh Birdi — were given the full tour of Fantastak’s warehouse and office recently. Helen McKay, Operations Manager, Paperworks says “One of our aims at Paperworks is to ensure our trainees integrate with the local community — we want the team to have experiences outside of disability services. Visits like this are a great way of opening trainees’ eyes to the wider world of work as well as being an opportunity to develop confidence and social skills.” James Stocker, Fantastak’s Export Account Manager, welcomed the eager participants and handed out high-viz jackets and explained the site’s health and safety processes. Their first guide was Peter Bentley, Production Manager at Fantastak. Fantastak is the leading manufacture of glue dots in Europe — Paperworks work with SuperDots on a daily basis, so the first stop was with the glue dot machines. Peter showed the group how the glue was heated to temperatures of over 200°C before the calibrated compression guns push the glue in liquid form onto the rolls or sheets at high speeds. The questions that were directed at Peter were as diverse as: how many dots can you have on a roll to, what is Fantastak’s customer base? Another interesting question was: what do people use the SuperDots for? James and Peter spoke about how they could be used to hold credit/membership/ business cards to letters, add promotional sachets to magazines, decorate greetings cards or closing a piece of direct mail. The Paperworks’ team then went on to speak about some of their clients and the orders they received where glue dots were required, relating their activities with some of Fantastak’s customers. The tour continued with Senior Production Operative, Jimmy Dean. He demonstrated how he was able to make most kinds of adhesive tapes into different lengths and widths, according to the customer’s requirements, with two different bespoke machines. Peter showed the group the
range of tapes Fantastak produced ranging from the double-sided finger lift tissue tape Paperworks’ was familiar with, through to tape that could be used to seal small water leaks on pipework. The journey continued with Kevin Butlin, Warehouse Supervisor for Fantastak. Kevin showed Paperworks the Yellow Square… This is where all the items are sent to after production, ready to be booked into the warehouse by Kevin. The Yellow Square system is something Paperworks’ is keen to adopt when they have completed a piece of work, keeping it away from other stock items — avoiding confusion between different orders. Kevin then showed the trainees the processes Fantastak follow to send out orders. He explained that one person would pick an order and a second person would double check, to prevent mistakes. Paperworks could relate to this as they use the same processes for their beads. Paperworks were able to see how products moved from production to delivery, but there was one more thing to show them before they left. Fantastak Retail has a whole floor dedicated to packing their products, and the products they make for other brands. The three Production Operatives Katre Maarja Hainsalu, Claire Phillips and Annika Hainsalu skilfully manned the machines responsible for automating the packaging process. One of the questions from Paperworks was how many wallets were they able to do in one day? After a few calculations Annika said 15 thousand a day. The Paperworks group were very impressed by that! The tour had come to an end, with James providing them all with a goody bag of Fantastak’s products and information on a competition they
might be interested in — The Crafty Colourful Unicorn Competition that is running on www. allthingssticky.com Helen contacted Fantastak shortly after the trainees arrived back to let them know how enthusiastic they were about the visit, here are some of the things they said in their own words. “Thank you for today” Jack. “I enjoyed it today, a man showed us around the machine and the warehouse. We see how people make the sticky dots and the sellotape. You know when you use the plastic to put round the boxes it was on a big electric roll it goes round with the plastic. The man used four boxes to attach the sides to hold it in place. It was a bit noisy but not too noisy for me. I would like to go again, I really like my goody bag.” Chung. “It was good looking round the factory and seeing how the business operates!” Gurdesh. “I really liked seeing all of the machinery and how it operates and what it does. It was also fascinating and interesting to know about the business and how it has grown since it first started in 1999. Also it was interesting to know the amount of production that they make of their products and how quickly they do it. I had a wonderful experience and I very much appreciated the opportunity to come to your site to see what you lot do and what the business is all about.” Ryan. The Fantastak Group is Europe’s leading manufacturer of glue dots and supplier of niche adhesive products, established in 1999, and comprised of three companies — Fantastak Ltd, Fantastak Retail Ltd and Simpson Turner Ltd. Fantastak Ltd supply own brand glue dots — SuperDots, adhesive tapes and discs — SuperDiscs, and other adhesives required by trade business; Fantastak Retail provide brands with OEM / white label products and bespoke solutions for the craft, stationery and retail markets; and Simpson Turner is a new company that has developed a unique product called ‘The Bugo’, which stops bed bugs. All of these companies trade in the UK, EU and with the rest of the world. www.fantastak.com www.paperworks.org.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Language Timothy!
A happily married man had only one complaint; his wife was always nursing sick birds. One cold evening, he came home to find a raven with a splint on its beak sitting in his favourite chair. On the dining room table there was a feverish eagle pecking at an aspirin while in the kitchen his wife was comforting a shivering little wren that she had found. The furious spouse strode over to where his wife was towelling down the cold little bird. “I can’t take it any more! We’ve got to get rid of all of these darn...” The wife held up her hand to cut him off in mid-curse. “Please dear,” she said, “not in front of the chilled wren.”
Speechless
The veteran politician, not known for his public speaking skills, was going to give a speech at the Olympics. He looked at the teleprompter and began, “O, O, O, O, O.” An aid quickly ran over and told him, “That is the logo sir.”
Family Business
“Mum, I wish I had the enough money to buy a Nanographic Printing Press.” The mother asked, “Why do you want a Nanographic Printing Press?” The boy replied, “I never said I wanted Nanographic Printing Press.” I just wish I had that much money.”
High Flyer
A salesman, a designer, a printer, a finisher, and a pilot were on a plane. The plane was going down fast, and there were only four parachutes for all five of them. The pilot took one and jumped and then the designer took one and jumped. The finisher told the printer to take the last one. The printer said, “No worries, there are still two parachutes left! The salesman took my backpack!”
Make it snappy
Why did the two cameras decide to get together for a date? If they clicked, they wanted to see what would develop!
Forever Friends
Billy always had problems with maths so he used his fingers and toes for adding and subtracting. One day he didn’t have enough fingers or toes to figure out the problem. His best friend took off his shoes and held up his fingers so Billy could figure it out. The moral of the story is that in times of need, you can always ‘count on’ your best friend!
From the mouths of babes
Edward was at school this morning and the teacher asked all the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came out, Fireman, Policeman, Printer, Chippy, Captain of Industry etc. but Edward was being uncharacteristically quiet and so the teacher asked him about his father. ‘My father is an exotic dancer in a club and takes off his clothes in front of other people. The teacher quickly interrupts his pupil and sets the other children some work and took little Edward aside to ask him if that was really true. ‘No’ said Edward, ‘He sells photocopiers, but I was just too embarrassed to say’
That’s A Good Thing
The young boy was spending a Sunday afternoon with his Granddad. Looking at pictures of his Granddad in his military uniform, the boy asked, “Granddad, did you ever kill anyone in the war?” “No champ, I never did.” “That’s a good thing.” “You’re telling me,” began Granddad, “I was the cook!”
A Penguin Outing
Two men are in a truck driving around with a penguin. Noticing the penguin, a policeman stops the truck driver and tells him to take this animal to a zoo right away. The next day, the same policeman sees the same two men in the same truck with the same penguin again. He stops them and says, “Didn’t I tell you guys to take this animal to a zoo yesterday?” The driver replies, “We did officer! We are taking him to the cinema today.”
Stretching those Retirement Dollars
Shirley and Abe, a retired couple from New York City, living in Miami Beach, are getting ready to go out to dinner. Shirley says, “Abe, darling, do you want me to wear this Chanel suit or the Gucci?” Abe says, “I don’t care.” A few minutes later Shirley says, “Abe, should I wear my Cartier watch or my Rolex?” Abe says, “Your choice.” A few more minutes pass and Shirley says, “Abe, love, shall I wear my five-carat pearl diamond ring or my six-carat round diamond ring with the baguettes?” Abe says, “Shirley, I really don’t care what you wear, but if you don’t get moving, we’re going to miss the Early Bird Special.”
Mirror mirror on the wall…
There was a magic mirror in this restaurant. If you lie to the mirror you will get sucked in. A graphic designer walks in says she thinks she’s artistic and gets sucked in. A pre-press operator walks in says she thinks she is as clever as Bill Gates she gets sucked in. A copier saleslady walks in and she says “I think...” and she gets sucked in.
A group of blondes walk into a bar
A group of salesmen walk into a bar. One of the salesmen tells the barman to line up a row of drinks for all of them. The lads lift their glasses and toast, “Here’s to 51 days” and they proceed to down their drinks. Once again, they tell the barman to “line ‘em up” and again they toast to 51 days and down their drinks. The barman said, “I don’t get it. Why in the world are you toasting to 51 days?” One of the salesmen explained, “We just finished a jigsaw puzzle that had written on the box 2-4 years and we finished it in 51 days”
Walk on
I got a dog and named it “Twenty Miles”. This way I can tell people that I walk twenty miles everyday.
From the mouths of babes Finding one of her students making faces at others on the playground, Ms. Smith stopped to gently reprimand the child. Smiling sweetly, the teacher said, “Bobby, when I was a child, I was told that if I made ugly faces, it would freeze and I would stay like that.” Bobby looked up and replied, “Well, Ms. Smith, you can’t say you weren’t warned.”
We said no more blonde jokes, especially from the states… A brunette, a redhead, and a blonde escape a burning building by climbing to the roof. Firemen are on the street below, holding a blanket for them to jump in. The firemen yell to the brunette, “Jump! Jump! It’s your only chance to survive!” The Brunette jumps and SWISH! The firemen yank the blanket away...the brunette slams into the pavement like a tomato.” C’mon! Jump! You have to jump!’ say the firemen to the redhead. “Oh no! You will pull the blanket away!” says the redhead. “No! It’s brunettes we can’t stand! We’re OK with redheads!” “OK” says the redhead, and she jumps. SWISH! The firemen yank the blanket away, and the lady is flattened on the pavement like a pancake. Finally, the blonde steps to the edge of the roof. Again, the firemen yell, “Jump! You have to jump!” “No way! You’re just going to pull the blanket away!” yelled the blonde. “No! Really! You have to jump! We won’t pull the blanket away!” “Look,” the blonde says. “Nothing you say is going to convince me that you’re not going to pull the blanket away! So what I want you to do is put the blanket down, and back away from it...”

More One-liners
My mate was mysteriously kidnapped two months ago, and then the same happened to his daughter just a few days later. She’s always taken after her dad. I love cooking children and dogs but I hate punctuating my sentences Just written a joke about nipples. Needs tweaking. I asked my mate for a second opinion. He said, “Well I-”,”Whoa” I said, “Times up.” News: ‘Man Utd Player Pulled From Burning Car’. He must have the gift of the gab with the ladies. I had to deliver some packages to an apartment block in Chinatown today. It was Wong on so many levels. Good Communication Skills - Spends lots of time on phone Average. Good Communication Skills - Spends lots of time on phone.
Lock Jaw
In one small rural town the sheriff also fulfilled the role of the town’s veterinarian. One night the phone rang, and his wife answered. An agitated voice inquired, “Is your husband there?” “He is, but tell me, do you need him as the sheriff or the vet?” the wife asked. “Both!” was the reply. “We can’t get our dog’s mouth open, and there’s a burglar in it!” You can’t handle the truth! I told my girlfriend, “The last thing I want to do is break up with you... I have about five things on my list before I get there.”
There is a new print shop down the street.
Sweet music
My wife curiously noticed that every time it was my turn to put the kids to bed they fall asleep in minutes. I told her that when I play my guitar it works like magic putting kids to sleep. She said I must be exceedingly talented because it works just like that with her as well.
Bonkers
A squirrel was sitting in an apple tree. All of a sudden a cow started climbing up the tree. Surprised to see a climbing cow the squirrel asked the newcomer, “What the heck are you doing here?” The cow replied, “I thought I’d eat some oranges.” “But this is an apple tree.” “I know. I brought my own.”
Showtime
The circus was in town and Stanislaus and Oleg were the featured act. While Oleg walked across the high wire without a net, Stanislaus would balance on Oleg’s shoulders, all the while juggling five balls at once. A few minutes before they were to go on, Oleg called for the ringmaster. It seems Oleg had become deathly ill by eating some bad sushi and would have to cancel tonight’s performance. “You’d better tell Stanislaus,” Oleg said. Walking into Stanislaus’ dressing room, the ringmaster got right to the point. “Stanislaus, I have some bad news. You won’t be doing your act tonight.” “Why not?” “You don’t have Oleg to stand on!”
It’s running a GREAT special.
True as Sometimes... when you cry... no one sees your tears ... Sometimes... when you are worried... no one sees your pain... Sometimes... when you are happy... no one sees your smile... But miss-spell some one’s name on a business card!
Chicken chat A pair of chickens walk up to the reception desk at a public library and say, ‘Buk Buk BUK.’ The librarian decides that the chickens desire three books, and gives them to them... and the chickens leave shortly thereafter. Around midday, the two chickens return to the library desk quite vexed and say,’ Buk Buk BuKKOOK!’ The librarian decides that the chickens desire another three books and gives them to them. The chickens leave as before. The two chickens return to the library in the early afternoon, approach the librarian, looking very annoyed and say,‘; Buk Buk Buk Buk Bukkooook!’ The librarian is now a little suspicious of these chickens. She gives them what they request, and decides to follow them. She followed them out of the library, out of the town, and to a park. At this point, she hid behind a tree, not wanting to be seen. She saw the two chickens throwing the books at a frog in a pond, to which the frog was saying, “Rrredit Rrredit Rrredit...”

Young politics in print
(Little brother to his older sister) What is political correctness? (Older sister) It’s something you’re not supposed to talk about. (Little brother) How am I going to find out what it is if I can’t talk about it? (Older sister) You can talk about it but you have to talk about it in the right way. (Little brother) How do I talk about it the right way? (Older Sister) Just don’t say anything and you can’t go wrong! (Little brother) How am I supposed to communicate and tell people how I feel? (Older Sister) I haven’t got that part figured out yet; it’s a slippery slope. (Little brother) What’s a slippery slope?
How to make a joke out of a dog’s dinner The Taco Bell Chihuahua, a Doberman and a Bulldog are in a doggie bar having a drink when a good looking female Collie comes up to them and says, “Whoever can say liver and cheese in a sentence can take me for a walk.” So the Doberman says, “I love liver and cheese.” The Collie says, “That’s not good enough.” The Bulldog says, “I hate liver and cheese.” She says, “That’s not creative.” Finally, with his Mexican accent, the Chihuahua says, “Liver alone... cheese mine.”
