Richard Quinn launches ‘open access’ textile print studio Textile and fashion designer Richard Quinn has launched the Richard Quinn Print Studio, a unique textile printworks offering Epson dye sublimation and traditional screen printing services and workshops. Since he graduated from Central St Martins, London, last year with his colourful floral collection, Richard has won the international 2017 H&M Design Award, is one of Dazed Magazine’s ‘Dazed100’ cultural influencers in 2017, and is British Fashion Council’s ‘One to Watch’ in 2017. His new textile print studio based in Peckham, London, features an Epson SureColor SC-F9200 digital dye-sublimation printer complementing two manual screen printing lines. The space gives fashion students and designers an affordable facility where they can source their printed textiles and obtain expert advice about different print techniques, dyes, textiles and alternative materials from Richard and his expert technicians. In addition, Richard designs, prints and sews his own hautecouture pieces in the studio and the facility is also available for other designers to print their own textiles onsite if they wish. “I love the SureColor because it produces superb quality printed textiles,” says Richard. “I used Epson printers at Central St Martins for my graduation collection and it was important that I had one here in my studio working around the clock, producing vibrant colours, and capturing all the fine details and textures I want. This flexible machine gives me the freedom to experiment with many different fabrics and new substrates. It’s great being able to create a textile design, print it and create an outfit — all on site within hours. There is no other studio quite like this one, which is run by a designer for other designers. We provide considerable experience in colour, materials and printing quality fabrics using both digital and traditional processes and that means a lot to designers.”

Supporting student designers by providing a reasonably priced print service and educational workshops is important to Richard: “We have already had a great deal of interest from Central St Martins where I trained and from universities all over the country.” “Richard is one of the new generation of young designers who are using Epson digital textile printing technology to create stunning high fashion collections which attract international recognition and accolades,” says Richard Barrow, Epson Europe. “2017 is going to be a very exciting year for him and we look forward to supporting him as he develops his studio and new collections.” www.richardquinnstudio.co.uk

Route 1 orders StitchLiner MarkIIIs Route1 Print has made a significant investment in fast turnaround short run production with the order of three Horizon StitchLiner MarkIIIs and a Horizon HT-1000V three knife trimmer from IFS. As part of an overall summer investment of £4m, the Rotherham trade printer will install the StitchLiners this month. They will be among the UK’s first delivery from Horizon in Japan. Route1 Print produces litho and digital print on B1 and B2 Heidelbergs and Xerox iGens. There are also two large format HP Scitexs. The new systems were chosen to help launch a 24-hour dispatch service and support fast turnaround, short run book production. Jack Wilmott, Route 1 Print Brand Manager explains: “We want to introduce a 24-hour service and to do that we needed to enhance our short run book production. We need it to be faster and to meet the demand for shorter run work.

The operation will replace a Muller Martini with the three lines. They will run alongside an existing StitchLiner 5500. Jack said: “We made the decision in January about where this cycle of capital expenditure would go. We looked at all the options on the market but we like the StitchLiners. They are easy to run and fast to set up. Our operators know them well so will be able to run them very smoothly. He continues: “We are expecting to turnover £30m this year and we estimate that the new systems will increase our booklet making capacity by about 63%. They will give us more flexibility and streamline production now that everything is sheet work. We can get work on and off them much faster and that ensures quick and flexible production. The newly-launched nextgeneration StitchLiner builds on the hugely successful innovative StitchLiner series. Complete with servo drive technology, the system runs at a maximum speed of

The HT-1000V will eliminate that and help to ensure we are much more efficient.” www.ifsl.uk.com

JETRIX support winning team in endurance rally A British team supported by JETRIX has taken on an endurance rally and won. They achieved top spot after 18 gruelling challenges across Europe. The car — a Lancia Delta — was deliberately re-created with the original style rally branding using InkTec inks and media and was also printed on a JETRIX printer. The rally across Europe involved 2,700 miles, six mountain passes, 10 days, a one hour stop by the German police (they were innocent!) and three laps of the Nurburgring at 108% of the stated top speed. The uniqueness of the vehicle graphics (plus the noise of the car as in true rally style, there was much popping and banging as the throttle was let off!) meant the team got a great reception wherever they went. It was a tightly fought contest, however the team won by 27 points. The final difference being just from one of the last few challenges, which meant they ended the competition in the lead. As Adam Drury, one of the team members says, “It was quite a trip and the 32 year old car didn’t even breakdown once! After weather testing the sponsor logos, which had been printed by JETRIX, for a period of time, the ink hadn’t deteriorated and that is why we were impressed and wanted to use them. Many thanks to InkTec for the support, the car looked tremendous and it made many people notice it.” www.inktec-europe.com

Duplo annouces Northern Lights Tour. First stop Newcastle

Duplo has revealed the initial line-up for its Northern Lights Tour, which will help spark ideas for smarter finishing. In a first stop, Duplo will be taking to the stage at Newcastle Gateshead Marriott Hotel MetroCentre on 12 and 13 September 2017. Among the favourite headliners will be the PFi DI-CUT300 versatile and highly productive short run diecutting system, the 600i Booklet System high-end collating and bookletmaking solution and the DC-746 top of the range multifinisher, a powerful all in one digital colour finishing solution. Newcomer to the scene but destined for great success is Duplo’s DuSense Sensory Coater. It is designed for cost-effective embellishment of

Swiftprint buys Matrix to digitally foil print Huddersfield-based Swiftprint can now offer their customers a truly bespoke foiling service with its recent purchase of a Matrix Digital Foiling & Laminating System Established in 1972, Swiftprint is a premiere design and print facility. Offering a full service to its customers, their portfolio ranges from business cards, letterheads, brochures and flyers, to wide format work such as outdoor banners, signs, pop-up banners and exhibition stands. With an impressive arsenal of kit including a Xerox Versant 2100, Roland and Canon wide format printers and an Easymount wide format laminator, owners Phil & Vickie Earle decided it was time to bring their small format lamination in-house too. “We had a ‘so-called’ table top laminator” said Swiftprint’s Phil Earle. “It was a messy and time-consuming operation and anything over 100 sheets would always be outsourced. I visited the Print2Finish event at Leeds Elland Road and was given a demonstration on the Matrix System. I was very impressed with the quality and amazed that we’d also be

able to foil our digital work. I was also really surprised how well the Matrix could foil onto uncoated paper, particularly a job we used to send out using the Arjowiggins Pop’Set range from Antalis. We’ve saved thousands of pounds now we can foil and laminate on the Matrix.” Swiftprint also run its sister company, Wedding Angels and offers wedding stationery including save the date cards, invitations, order of service and table plans. The award-winning company specialises in short-run, personalised and bespoke digitally printed stationery. “Many couples that visit us love the look and quality of foiled invites for their wedding,” continued Earle “The problem is that most find the £150 set-up charge too expensive, as we used to outsource all our foiled work. Now we have the Matrix, we can offer our wedding stationery with a beautiful bespoke foiled finish, even foiling variable data like individual names, and all without set-up charges.” www.vivid-online.com

finishing. We will be putting the spotlight on the ways they can be integrated into their current business set-up to reduce bottlenecks or create new revenue streams.” She added: “Attendees will be able to see special performances designed to show greater efficiency thanks to faster turnaround times, automated precision automation and better workflow solutions.” Among the key sponsors of the event are Renz, Vivid Lamination and Compass Business Finance. www.duplonorthernlights.com

GOING LARGE WITH MIMAKI

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT WITH THE MIMAKI JV150 With our new web development company up and running and being in need of some exterior promotional signage, the Colourfast team (the home of QPP) headed up the M6 to Cheshire to spend time with Mimaki’s UK and Irish distributor, Hybrid Services. As we’d taken along some artwork it meant we could sort the signs and road test one of the company’s solvent printers at the same time!

[M]

artin Southworth, Hybrid’s showroom technician talked us through our requirements before we met with the company’s national sales manager, John de la Roche to get our hands on the machine. The JV150 is Mimaki’s entry level solvent printer and is available in 1.3m and 1.6m widths. We ran the larger of the two and having been offered a choice of different banner materials, opted to run Soyang Europe’s 450gsm product which when combined with the inks, will give us long outdoor life without the need to laminate. Having created our design in Adobe Illustrator and saved it as a PDF, Mimaki’s RasterLink RIP software opened it quickly off the USB stick. As the majority of the design was vector based, we were able to size it up to the 1.3m height and 2.3m width of the finished sign without any loss of quality. The RIP software also applied the appropriate profile for the Soyang banner to ensure correct ink loading and colour correction. Supplied as standard with every Mimaki printer — from the smallest

£6,995 printer/cutter right up to the huge JFX500 flatbed UV printer with its ability to print 10’ x 5’ rigid boards that was positioned at the other side of the showroom — it seemed very easy to use and required nothing more than a fairly standard PC to run. We gave Martin a hand to load the banner onto the printer — the 25m rolls weigh about 20kg, but that is still well within the maximum weight of material that the JV150 can take. As the printer has a powered take-up unit, it’s possible to leave it unattended with all 50m of material quite happily

rolling onto the core for really long jobs. It took less than five minutes for the banner to print, with the heater on the platen helping to dry the inks before it rolled onto the take-up. It’s usually best to leave prints for a short while before finishing them — just to let the ink fully harden, but we trimmed it soon after on Hybrid’s cutting bench before Martin applied banner tape to hem it (or it could be sewn for an even more durable finish) and then set about eyeleting the corners. As Martin worked his magic on the finishing table, we decided to run another couple of jobs on the printer with John — this time some great little stickers printed on self-adhesive vinyl and a few photographic prints that we output on a satin paper that we’ll frame and put up in the office. Taking us round some of the other sign and graphics machines in Mimaki’s

range, he showed us how the JV150 (like it’s faster sibling, the JV300) can be set up with 2x4 colour inks or the eight colour set that features Mimaki’s impressive orange and light black options and it’s the latter that Hybrid showed us. The orange ink gives an incredible result — and we can see real advantage to it for printers producing work for well-known brands that have that challenging area of colour space in their corporate ID. The 1.6m Mimaki JV150-160 is currently on offer through Hybrid’s reseller network for just £9,495 until the end of September, set up the same as we tested in Cheshire — with the easy to use RIP, powered take-up and a two-year warranty. For only an extra £360, Hybrid is offering a starter pack of eight full size SS21 ink cartridges, saving 50% on retail. We’ve consistently been impressed with the kit that Mimaki has come up with over the years and the JV150 is no different — presenting an excellent option as a keenly priced, high quality printer that can turn its hand to most things. We ran banner, paper and vinyl on our visit but it’ll also happily print to pull-up material, canvas, backlit and plenty more substrates — and when commissioned with Mimaki’s dye sublimation inks, it transforms into a fashion, sportswear and textile graphics machine. As for the orange SS21 inks — the future’s bright is all we can say! www.hybridservices.co.uk www.ColourfastWebDesign.co.uk

DUPLO launches DB-290 Perfect Binder A unique selling point for Duplo’s DB-290 Perfect Binder is new side gluing by wheels with their own dedicated glue tank. This allows operators to use fast-drying adhesive to firmly support the shape of the book. The glue in the main tank can then be longer drying glue, giving more time for the adhesive to thoroughly penetrate the spine. The combination creates improved glue application and adhesion, resulting in a better bind and squarer books. Delivering compact professional perfect binding for long and short runs, the new addition joins Duplo’s comprehensive, highly automated and precision engineered portfolio of bookletmakers, saddlestitchers, collators, multifinishers, binders, folders and duplicators. Ideally suited to the production of soft cover

books, tape bound books and note pads, the single operator machine can produce up to 200 books per hour. The DB-290 offers a maximum book thickness of 40mm at a production speed up to 200bph while a user friendly ergonomic control panel supports quick, easy and accurate set up. Robin Greenhalgh, Duplo International Chairman, said: “Our new side gluing technique is really going to impress users, who will be amazed at the quality from the better binding and squarer books. With the emphasis on today’s printer to provide a multi-service approach we have developed DM-290 to deliver a high-quality book without the need for a skilled operator. Electronic operation and a clearly marked LED display ensures more precise setting. It is flexible too with a

conversion to padding jobs achieved at the push of a button. All these elements have been combined to ease set up and operation for the most efficient and profitable results.” www.duplointernational.com

Epson new versatile short-run label press Epson has introduced a new short-run label press, the SurePress L-4533 Series, to replace the existing L-4033 model. Renz unveil Bindomatic Accel Thermal Binders Renz will show, for the first time at The Print Show in October, the new super quick Bindomatic Accel Cube and Accel Ultra thermal cover binding machines, designed with the high-end user in mind. This new series of thermal cover binding machines boasts increased loading capacity and has cut the processing time in half. The automated thermal binding system handles 1 to 360 sheets of 80 gsm paper and document spine widths up to 36 mm. Binding time is a lightening quick one document per second. Also at The Print Show Renz will be exhibiting the Punch 500 heavy duty punch, AP 300 Compact automated punch and MOBI 500 semi-automated ring wire binding machine for books and calendars. The Renz

desktop DTP 340 semi-automated punch and ECL 360 electric Ring Wire closing machine will complete the line-up. Iain Bullock, Renz (UK) Managing Director comments: “I admire The Print Show’s tenacity and never say die attitude. I told them that I would absolutely not be exhibiting at their show in the IPEX year yet here we are exhibiting as I am so impressed by the good job they have done in gaining such momentum for the show. The Print Show falls at a good time for Renz, just as printers are thinking about how they are going to fulfil their imminent calendar work.” He adds: “The simple reason we are now exhibiting at The Print Show is just to be there in front of our audience with relevant pieces

of equipment. This is how Renz has grown and built our reputation and contacts in the industry over the years. I would hate to be sat back in the office knowing that there was an exhibition somewhere in the UK and that Renz wasn’t present, yet potential customers of ours were.” Renz is the largest provider of punching and binding systems. It continually strives to provide innovative solutions. It has addressed pressures in the finishing sector from the print-on-demand market with faster, more automated equipment. Its main emphasis is on wire binding and Renz has the widest range of punching and binding machines. www.renz.co.uk

Smart Print Services Invests in First Xerox Versant 180 Smart Print Services, a Kent-based design and print provider, has become the first company in the UK to roll out the new Xerox Versant 180 as it looks to boost its print capabilities. The installation of the new device allows Smart Print Services to expand its offering to cover a wider scope of high quality digital print services and products, such as marketing collateral, magazines and banner prints. The company was recently acquired by Smart Office Solutions. With a stronger digital print offering, Smart Print Services is now able to concentrate its efforts on broadening its customer base in the growing small medium business (SMB) market, in the Kent and Rochester area, without compromising on quality or speed. The business will use the Xerox Versant 180 to run bigger production jobs and produce near-litho quality at high speed. Since the installation, Smart Print Services has already seen an increase in productivity because of the device’s ability to run offline around the clock using planned jobs, and therefore get prints out to market quicker. “Following a successful demonstration of the device earlier this year at Xerox HQ, we recognised that the Versant 180’s print quality was exactly what we needed to stay competitive in this

industry and position ourselves as the digital print and services provider for the Kent region,” said Carl Mitchell, print director, Smart Print Services. “We were particularly impressed by the device’s colour definition, run length and the volumes it can handle – doing all this while still remaining very easy to use.” “This is an exciting time for all parties involved, and a great milestone for Xerox.” said Andrew Morrison, managing director, Xerox UK and Ireland. “Prior to installation, Smart Print Services didn’t have a production machine of this size and calibre. Thanks to the Versant 180, Smart Print Services is now able to carry out larger jobs in house, instead of outsourcing them, allowing them to keep up with digital transformation whilst retaining control of their costs within the business.” www.xerox.com

Mimaki updates textile Tx300P-1800 Series Mimaki has announced that its Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-to-textile printers have been updated, providing the capability to simultaneously load both textile pigment and sublimation inks. This enables the use of a single printer to print directly onto a much wider range of textiles without the need to swap out ink systems. This previously unavailable, newly developed technology represents a major breakthrough that will significantly improve productivity and increase flexibility for these Mimaki textile printers. Having identified demand for fast turnaround times as well as short and bespoke production runs by customers in the textile, fashion and apparel markets, Mimaki has now created the option to switch fabric types quickly and easily, by selecting the most appropriate ink system for each fabric with the enhanced system also providing valuable environmental benefits by the removal of water or steaming from the post-treatment process. Mimaki already offers five different ink types for textile printing, including sublimation dye ink, dispersion dye ink, textile pigment ink, reactive dye ink and acid dye ink. In the normal course of operation, one ink per printer must be selected. Textile print producers will now be able to use the two most popular ink types in one single printer. Both the Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-to-textile printers will have the capability to simultaneously load TP400 textile pigment ink for cotton and hemp materials as well as Sb420 sublimation dye ink for polyester material. Since neither ink type generally requires steaming or washing in the post-treatment process, there is no need for a large operational space, huge volumes of water, or special expertise in handling the printed fabric. All that is required is the printer and colour fixing equipment, making these entry-level printers suitable for all. Mimaki’s TP400 textile pigment ink, which consists of solvent, pigment and binder agent, is fixed through heat without impairing the breathability and water absorbency of the fabric; removing the need for large posttreatment equipment. These inks deliver beautiful print results on cotton and hemp materials and are recommended for interior fabrics, T-shirts and various other apparel applications.

The Mimaki Sb420 sublimation dye ink is specifically designed for use with pre-treated polyesters. The colour is fixed using heat after printing and printing on polyester with these inks delivers excellent colour accuracy and reproduction. The Mimaki Tx300P-1800 printer can print directly onto almost any type of natural or man-made fabric and is ideally suited for thick and woven textiles. Its combination of affordable price, speed and high quality make it perfect for producing short runs or samples of customised or bespoke designs. The Mimaki Tx300P-1800B printer uses an innovative automated belt-fed conveyance system making it particularly effective for printing on modern stretchable materials. With the capability to print to a broad range of natural and man-made fabrics this machine is ideal for the production of fashion, clothing and soft furnishing materials. Mimaki expect the updated hybrid ink system for the Tx300P-1800 and Tx300P-1800B direct-to-textile printers to be commercially available in the summer of 2017. www.hybridservices.co.uk

THE PRINT SHOW 2017, 11-13 OCTOBER 2017

TIME TO PRE-REGISTER Visitor registration for this year’s ‘The Print Show’ is now open. It is free to attend and takes place at The International Centre (TIC), Telford. Vivid Laminating Systems, Intec, X-Press On Demand, and many more. Speaking about EFI’s decision to return this year, Martin Mayo, inkjet regional sales manager at EFI, said: “We attended The Print Show last year and the year before that. Both shows were very successful for EFI in terms of conversations with existing customers and prospects.

[N]

ow celebrating its third year this is billed as the must attend exhibition for the UK’s commercial print industry. Visitor benefits this year include, free parking on-site, a free lunch and daily show prizes. Back again by popular demand are the feature areas. These include the Printers Bazaar and Traditional Print Masterclasses. The International Centre is a top-class venue that provides excellent transport links, via road or rail. It also boasts fantastic onsite hotels, restaurants, an IMAX cinema, bars, and extensive shopping facilities. In recent weeks, organisers have confirmed the addition of industry giant EFI, which, as it has done at previous editions of the event, will focus on its extensive range of software solutions— while its world renowned wide-format inkjet systems will be showcased through a major distributor soon to be announced. RGBUK, an accredited reseller of Canon, Roland DG, and OKI wide-format print products, has also signed up, as has KAS Paper Systems, a leading UK manufacturer of mail enclosing systems. Also confirmed for The Print Show year is Lion—which specialises in high-value personalised print products, large-format trade print expert Your Print Partner, finishing solutions firm A Star Binding Supplies, Beechwood Finance, and Celtic Binding. This latest group of exhibitors once again shows both the strength and depth of The Print Show’s offering to the UK print industry, as it not only caters for a rainbow of smaller independent suppliers, but also major manufacturing brands such as Xeikon, KBA, HP, Konica Minolta, Duplo, Epson, EFI, B and R Moll, Mimaki (Hybrid Services), Inktec, RISO, Morgana, Roland (Grafityp), Hans Grohni (Printers Superstore),

Mayo also revealed details of what visitors can expect on the EFI stand this year: “During The Print Show, we will mainly showcase our Productivity Software Solutions with its certified end-to-end workflows for the commercial and digital printing segment; in addition to our Fiery Server and Software portfolio. “Additionally, we will proof our digital printing capabilities with a variety of samples produced by our Inkjet printing systems.” Another major digital print player set to grace The Print Show in 2017 is Xeikon, which is set for its debut at the event. Its focus will be on educating the UK commercial printers visiting the show about the strong diversification opportunities its presses can open up. A good example of a Xeikon press that has been helping commercial printers around the world move their businesses into new markets is the PX3000 digital label printing press—based on the firm’s new Panther UV inkjet platform. Duncan Sargeant, sales manager for labels and packaging at Xeikon, explains more about the press: “The Xeikon PX3000 is a digital UV inkjet label printing press. Just like that other feline in our family, the Cheetah, it is designed

to deal with short runs, more demanding customers and ever higher creative expectations. Think: efficiency, versatility, and quality combined — all within the Xeikon ecosystem. You’ll be ready for whatever is behind the next turn. “In a world with ever-shorter product life cycles, a proliferation of SKUs (stock keeping units) and a demand for increasingly sophisticated labels to win customers and fight counterfeiting, digital label production is arguably the best way forward to secure a profitable business.” The Xeikon 9000 series is another good example of technology helping printers move into new growth markets, and combines top printing quality and productivity. “They are fast, versatile and allow for highly flexible handling at an excellent price quality ratio,” adds Sargeant. Meanwhile, Renz, which has supported the event since its launch in 2015, has also spoken candidly about its decision to return to the show this year. Iain Bullock, managing director at Renz UK, has paid a special tribute to the efforts of the organising team. Iain added: “The simple reason why we are now exhibiting at The Print Show is just to be there in front of our audience with relevant pieces of equipment. This is how Renz has grown and built up our reputation and contacts in the industry over the years. “The Print Show also falls at a good time in the calendar for Renz, just as the calendar season begins to start and printers and finishers alike are thinking about how they are going to fulfil their calendar work.” Renz has also revealed that it will use the show to display various machinery for the first time in the UK, including the super quick Bindomatic Accel Cube and Ultra thermal binding machines, alongside the Renz desktop DTP 340 A semiautomated punch and ECL 360 electric Ring Wire closing machine. Also set to feature on the Renz stand is the Punch 500 heavy duty punch, AP 300 Compact automated punch and MOBI 500 semi-automated Ring Wire binding machine for books and calendars. In addition, Renz will be showcasing the Argos F 400 cold UV coating machine, with its innovative cold UV curing technology, for the first time in the UK. www.theprintshow.com

FAKE NEWS AND FALSE IMAGES It seems we can no longer trust what we see or hear, apart from what is actually in front of our eyes. But then we probably never could, it’s just that the explosion of digital information input has highlighted the possibility that much of it could be an illusion. Martin Christie writes…

[I]

always have to stress to customers that what they see on their screen isn’t real but merely the representation of a series of noughts and ones in a convenient mode of display. But, such is the blind acceptance of computer science, they generally look at me as if I’m the one that’s mad. A healthy distrust of what appears to be the truth is a wise policy whether viewing digital images or listening to the tweets of presidents. When this column started, many years ago, the brief of digital imaging was fairly simple and straightforward, and I mainly concerned myself with cameras, scanners and the like as well as issues relating to printing the associated file formats. That still is a major part of the text but since the last decade has seen such a massive intrusion of the electronic image into almost everything we hold in our hand, carry in our cases, or attach to the dashboard of our cars, I have drawn in examples and experience from many aspects of contemporary life. It’s too easy to say that we are just printers and live in a bubble without being aware of the wider world in which our customers exist, with all their many influences and attitudes dictated by the persuasive pressures of the digital climate in which everything is speed and fingertip convenience, and nothing ever goes wrong. In the real world, things do go wrong, whether caused by human or computer intervention, or a combination of the two, and I regularly pull in examples from other sources to prove that the printing industry is not alone in facing challenging technological times. In fact we are far from the most serious casualty. As we go to press, there are reports of another collision between an American warship and a merchant vessel, the second in several months, also sadly, with loss of life. Precisely how an advanced ship of the most well equipped navy could be struck unexpectedly by an enormous cargo ship, is a puzzle that remains to be resolved — or covered up. However, the incident triggered a memory of a recent news piece from the BBC Click programme regarding problems with GPS navigation — the satellite system that virtually every location device relies. It seems that in June of this year the captain of a civilian ship in the Black Sea was surprised to discover that according to his GPS, his vessel was not bobbing up and down in salt water but actually 32 miles inland! He checked his equipment to find it was all working correctly and then checked with other marine traffic in the area to discover that at least twenty other ships

were also apparently parked on the same piece of ground. This wasn’t just a rogue blip on the screen, but a deliberate cyber attack, whether from government, being close to the Russian coast, or from criminal or other sources from the same area. The proximity is significant. GPS works on receiving signals from satellites in earth’s orbit and using triangulation — a mathematical model that’s as old as the pyramids — to pinpoint a location on the ground. It’s long been known that these signals, which all apparently use the same frequency, can be easily jammed as the signal is very weak. What’s only come to light more recently, is that they can be intercepted by a stronger local signal and fooled into recording different coordinates. This is called “spoofing”. The difference is that with jamming the system will simply fail. Wit h spoofing it will blindly accept the new course as the real one, much as centuries ago wreckers lured unsuspecting sailing ships onto Cornish rocks with false beacons. Those accepting it as real without question will be equal victims of the deception. But this is one with far worse implications in the twenty-first century than the plunder of smugglers, as so many devices both personal and professional, depending upon the accuracy of GPS information, and so many people simply accept it as infallible. Stories of lorries stuck under bridges or driving into lakes because of defective sat nav pale into insignificance compared to the possibilities of planes, ships, cars and any other automated vehicle being controlled by evil or any devious intent. And that’s before you even begin to wonder how foolproof military hardware is in use, and whether the odd nuclear submarine could be fooled into unleashing a few missiles just for the hell of it. On the other hand, you could see how cost effective this spoofing technology would be, as instead of spending billions in defence systems to shoot those incoming missiles down, you could simply turn on a transmitter and convince them to turn around and go back where they came from. The military, with their trillions of dollars, will no doubt devise software security to combat spoofing of their expensive weapons, but it does make you wonder how vulnerable civilian systems will be in the near future. Personally, I will continue to trust a printed map for my directions, as well as checking which way the sun travels through the sky every day. That can’t be fooled even if the viewer can be.

September 2017

Last month I mentioned Nik software, a selection of plug in filters that has been available for Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for some years and has had a popular following with many photographers, and which I have found useful in fine tuning output for print when the mainstream programmes prove a little too brutal in application. Sadly Google, who now own Nik, has decided to cease support for the software and while it is still available as a free download, and still works, may become dysfunctional in coming years as other programmes progress. More than a coincidence, Mac software specialists Macphun, to whom many former Nik development engineers have apparently migrated, released a Windows version of their Luminar photo editing too at the same time. This is still a Beta test version but is available as a free download until the final version appears, and when it will be competitively priced against Adobe’s options. Having had a brief chance to road test Luminar it’s a very serious option for some users not already tied up with Creative Cloud subscriptions. It’s not a replacement for Photoshop or Lightroom. It doesn’t have all of the un-useful functions such as cataloguing or browsing — at the moment — and the Windows version is currently just a standalone. Mac users can use it as a plug in. But most importantly it’s fully compatible with Adobe’s finest, supporting layers and masks as well as accepting PSD files. It’s pixel based so, like Lightroom, it doesn’t handle vector files like PDFs, but will take most picture images like PNGs. Like Lightroom, it’s a non-destructive editing tool, using adjustment layers, so changes are only applied in the final stage when files are saved or exported as a flattened image. The workspace is quite different to either Adobe product, as is some of the terminologies, so if you are used to the familiar interface, it will take a while to adjust and understand the workflow. However, on the other hand, users less used to Photoshop, for example, will find Luminar quite user-friendly and easy to use because of its simplified layout and helpful thumbnails. It doesn’t display all the tools and filters available at once, but lets you chose which ones you want to work with. You can set a different workspace for dealing with the colours in landscapes, for example, and another for the texture of skin tones with portraits. In this, it is much more like Nik’s way of working. It has its preset workspaces, but you can customise and save others as required. Of course, you can do this in Photoshop, but the standard Adobe interface is now so full of tools and functions it barely fits on the screen, and most users don’t bother to streamline the options and clear a bit of room. Luminar starts with the basics and lets you build up your tool kit as required, and because it’s that much simpler and very visual, it’s much easier to follow the direction your editing is going and make adjustments or corrections. In that, it’s more like the Develop module in Lightroom but with the advantage

vivid-online.com

of Layers which the latter doesn’t have. Adobe developed Lightroom as an option for photographers who didn’t need all the graphic and design possibilities being introduced into Photoshop which, by the CS series of upgrades, was becoming a monster for all but the expert user. Inevitably, ten years on, and as users demand more development functions, Lightroom itself has put on a little weight, and has endured some criticism lately for poor performance resulting from the software equivalent of middle age spread. Lightroom is ideal for batch processing large numbers of images, from a camera card for example, or from an individual folder where there are multiple files which can be given similar output settings. But then you have to import all the files from the folder into the programme in order to edit them. Luminar works with individual images. Without a browser, you may need to use Adobe Bridge to find a selected file and place it somewhere more convenient, in a print folder for example. But once isolated, it can be opened and treated to all the many filters and adjustments available before being saved for print. You cannot print directly from Luminar, as you can with the others, but you can get an image print ready as you can prepare filters for a particular printer, for example, making allowance for how it will print on individual media. Luminar has more tools than Lightroom for adjusting clarity, structure and enhancing details, including a built-in polarising filter, and is easier to use than Photoshop, and this is where it may come into its own with the average user or print shop operative. Because the edits are so visual, with before and after comparison as well as thumbnail options, it takes that black art out of direct colour management. We are all too well aware of the problem of customers comparing original images on backlit devices to final hard copy print. Being able to show them the options, and how the different media affects the output, or how the source file can be modified to produce a more acceptable print file, could save a lot of wasted paper and time. It’s also very instructive for all involved to see the actual results of the various actions that can be applied to digital images. As I stated at the very beginning of this column, they are not real and only become so when they are committed to print. Anything that makes that transition easier has got to be good news, and as our general customer base draws further and further away from any understanding of how a computer works, let alone any appreciation of the complexities of Photoshop, the apparent simplicity has its place. This is not a dumbing down of the editing process, but making it less of a mystery to the non-specialist. Looking forward to the final version of Luminar due in the next few months when I’ll be able to give a more comprehensive review of its performance. http://macphun.com/luminar

Prince of Wales at Tree Care Conference The Arboricultural Association is thrilled to be able to announce that the opening address for the 51st National Amenity Conference ‘Biosecurity: Protect & Survive’ will be presented by His Royal Highness Prince Charles. The event will kick off on Monday 11th September with a message from the Prince of Wales, who has always been a prominent promoter of the natural environment and has a keen understanding of the significance of biosecurity. The 51st edition of the Association’s Annual Conference titled ‘Biosecurity: Protect & Survive’ will deliver cutting edge research, insightful opinions and the opportunity for debate, engagement and learning from some of the world’s leading authorities. Prince Charles recently told Gardeners’ Question Time that he plants trees at Highgrove with his grandson Prince George, hoping to encourage an interest in horticulture by showing him how much they have grown each time he visits. Trees need careful management over generations particularly with the threat from pests and diseases, and the Prince is keen to raise awareness. He was honoured to be offered the chance to address delegates from the professional tree care industry, whose work he said was vital in monitoring and keep threats to this valuable national asset at bay. Other noteworthy expert speakers and presenters at the National Amenity Conference include Tony Kirkham, Head of the Arboretum at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, the Chair of the Forestry Commission Sir Harry Studholme, DEFRA’s UK Chief Plant Health Officer Professor Nicola Spence and the renowned Arboriculturist Dr David Lonsdale.

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC UK), has produced a new informative brochure, specifically aimed at the Restaurant and Food & Beverage industry sectors, promoting responsibly sourced and labelled materials used in the production of food and beverage packaging. The new brochure, which was distributed with recent issues of International Sandwich & Food to Go and Café Culture magazines, highlights the facts that consumers are keen to make good environmental choices in their purchases, and this is particularly relevant when it comes to their food packaging for items in which they take-away their morning coffee, snack, lunch, or evening meal. Consumers want to see that their packaging, be it for food or beverage items, has been responsibly sourced, is easy to recycle and has a minimal impact on the environment, the world’s resources, and forests. As the brochure highlights, consumers trust labels, and therefore increasingly manufacturers are now producing packaging materials that are certified as sustainable through assurance and certification schemes such as PEFC. This is illustrated further in the brochure within several case studies, where manufacturers such as AB Group Packaging has produced quality, renewable and PEFC certified paper and carrier bags for the food to go sector. The PEFC label is used by AB Group on the paper bags and food bags to demonstrate its corporate commitment to supplying

Biosecurity, the subject of the conference, is a major focus for the Association and in July they organised a meeting with parliamentarians. This allowed the industry to forcefully put forward a point that is less acknowledged in policy circles: that planting trees in towns and cities counts for little without funding for their ongoing care and maintenance, which is under increasing threat. In a recent response to Michael Gove’s recent speech, in which he pledged to provide more ‘support for woodland creation and tree planting as we seek to meet our aim of 11 million more trees’, The Association stated that “The planting of new trees is just a small step and a stronger management policy for trees needs to be put in place, planning for their lifespan, not just ours.” “There is a distinct lack of attention paid to issues other than simply planting a tree, including species selection, environmental and other factors like surface materials. Mortality rates of 30-50% are still commonplace during the first year after planting urban trees. This is clear evidence of the need for more consideration of a post-planting treemanagement strategy and consultation of tree-care professionals.” The Arboricultural Association: www.trees.org.uk. The Amenity Conference ‘Protect and Survive’: www.trees.org.uk/Amenity-Conference customers with products that have been responsibly sourced. This was highlighted recently when a leading luxury food hall brand specified that all the carrier bags used in its food hall should certified and labelled, as they have a requirement that all the wood-based products used in their business come from well-managed forests. Colpac is another PEFC-certified company that is featured promoting the benefits of responsibly sourced and produced packaging. With 80 years experience in producing an array of sandwich and food to go products, Colpac has strong green credentials, and is keen to demonstrate to consumers that the products it manufactures are sustainably sourced, with the PEFC label providing a stamp of approval and reassurance of this fact to its customers. Benders Paper Cups is a producer of high quality paper cups, and is the UK’s only dedicated paper cups manufacturer. All the paperboard used to make its cups comes from PEFC certified forests. Most recently, Benders produced a series of specially designed paper coffee cups to mark the occasion of Hull being recognised as the City of Culture for 2017, all of which carried the PEFC label. By using the PEFC label on its paper cups, Benders states that it is demonstrating that its materials have been responsibly sourced. www.pefc.co.uk

Director Rob Hart, says: “We were punching separately and wanted a system that would complete A3 calendars in one streamlined process. The Renz Inline 500 Compact makes us 100% more productive. The flexible Renz Inline 500 Compact delivers significantly increased productivity compared to semi-automatic machines. It includes a touch screen for easy format changes and QSA (Quick Size Adjustment) technology to reduce setup times. It is upgradable with various modules to adapt to customer demands. Hart placed the order after he saw the system in action at Hunkeler Innovation days, Lucerne, in February: “We have a few Renz systems that are a number of years old and they are very reliable. They are also quick and easy to set up and very simple to use. When we saw it in action we knew it would be the same. It will help Ace win new calendar work, which Hart hopes will lead to other new orders. He states: “Once we have added new customers we can then talk to them about other services we offer such as PUR binding. We expect to open up a lot more business that way.” He adds: “It’s a nice system and very consistent in the high quality it produces. It was up and running really quickly and we have had no problems with it.” www.renz.co.uk

Our new poster and banner website Venture This month’s centre pages include an invitation to start your own online large format print web shop. Colourfast has invested in this opportunity using our sister satellite trading style, PrintHaven which is where we live just outside Brighton — home of QPP and our 33 year old print shop Colourfast and will share our journey as we progress into e-commerce. We reported last month on how Gavin at VB Media has helped us through the first steps to publish www.PrintHaven. co.uk These are also our first proper steps into print ecommerce, which some of our customers have found useful outside our normal opening hours. We have found the whole process to date as simple as we needed it to be and will add some of our small format traditional products over the next few weeks. Keep an eye on our progress and reports across all QPP media fronts, print, post, web and email. You won’t need any web design coding, skills or experience to take your print business online, offering a 24/7 365 print service. Follow our example www.PrintHaven.co.uk or better still, nominate one of your team to take ownership of your new web build and updates. Make a decision to sell more print using your own VB Media customer facing website managed by your own online dashboard. www.vb.media

September cash flow Forecasting, like the weather is a bit of a hit and miss strategy. Getting paid by people we sell to is most difficult in the holiday months of August and December. Once the merry go round is cranked up, excuses are spun in most of our sales and purchase admin. As soon as the cash dries up from our customers overdue invoices, then the pressure is on to defend against incoming from our brought ledger. Now, this is not revolutionary but is a proven technique — use rubber stamps and labels added to statements to jolly the whole process on a tad. If you want a PDF of our label or a jpeg for emails please drop Becky a line Becky@colourfast.co.uk

Printing Labels – Profit on a roll

Yes of course we printed our payment reminder labels on our demo Epson ColorWorks C7500 Epson; our results were the online printer is both speedy and economical. This is the ideal quality in-house solution to printing labels on a roll. Trade suppliers will take a few days to a week and generally have a minimum run of 1000. For this test we are examining bringing some of these label jobs into our own production and finding new customers for fast same day short run labels. Forecast costings are about five pence per label to include ink and media. Watch this space…

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Quick Print Q&A’s

What is it called when a cat wins a dog show? A CAT-HAS-TROPHY! Why was the broom late? It over swept! Why is a 2016 calendar more popular than a 2017 calendar? It has more dates. What caused the airline to go bankrupt? Runway inflation.

Dad Joke of the Day

I got my friend an elephant for his room. He said thanks. I said don’t mention it.

Studio Manager confession There comes a time when all people break down and do the unthinkable... They read the manual!

Advice bureau

I went to the doctor for my annual check up. He told me that I have insomnia. But I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.

Fitbit cheats

What kind of exercise do lazy people do? Diddly-squats.

Sales trainee shares new directive

I went to my manager and he suggested I do some exercises. Here is my new regime... 1. Jump to conclusions 2. Climb the walls 3. Drag my heels 4. Push my luck 5. Make mountains out of molehills 6. Bend over backwards 7. Run in circles 8. Put my foot in my mouth

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall...

Cash Flow

Business professor: “Who can give me an example of a system where you are billed before you actually receive your goods?” Student: “Tuition!”

Clever Carpentry

John and I were putting the siding on a barn we were building. I noticed John would take nails out of his pouch, hammer in a few and throw a few away. I asked him why he was throwing so many nails away. He said he was throwing them away because they had the heads on the wrong end. I shook my head and said, “John! Don’t you know anything about carpentry? Those nails are for the other side of the building!”

Jumbo stare

It’s okay to watch an elephant take a bath... Because they always have their trunks on!

Bad Dad

Jonathan asked his young son, “Greg, do you think I’m a bad father?” His son replied, “My name is Andrew.”

Dog tags

Stay

The doorbell rings. A man opens the door and there’s his mother-inlaw on the front step. She asks, “Can I stay here for a few days?” The man says, “Sure you can.” And he closes the door.

of the smoke alarm, I asked them to identify the sound. “It’s the smoke detector,” they replied in unison. “Do you know what that sound means?” I demanded. “Sure,” my oldest replied. “Dinner’s ready.”

Fishy Tale

Viagra

A friend hosted a dinner party for people from work and everyone was encouraged to bring their children. All during the sit-down dinner one co-worker’s three-yearold girl stared at the man sitting across from her. The girl could hardly eat her food from staring. The man checked his tie, felt his face for food, patted his hair in place, but nothing stopped her from staring at him. He tried his best to just ignore her but finally it was too much for him. He asked her, “Excuse me little girl, but why do you keep staring at me?” Everyone at the table had noticed her behavior, and the table went quiet for her response. The little girl said, “I just want to see how you drink like a fish.”

My turn to cook

Three dogs met on a street corner. The first was a beautiful black poodle with a big blue ribbon around its neck, and it said, “My name is Fifi, spelled F-I-F-I.” The second was a pretty white poodle with a red satin ribbon around its neck, and it said, “My name is Mimi, spelled M-I-M-I.” The third was a dirty old mutt and said, “My name is Fido, spelled P-HY-D-E-A-U-X.”

My cooking has always been the target of family jokes. One evening, as I prepared dinner a bit too quickly, the kitchen filled with smoke and the smoke detector went off. Although both of my children had received fire safety training at school, they did not respond to the alarm. Annoyed, I stormed through the house in search of them. I found them in the bathroom, washing their hands. Over the loud buzzing

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall...

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men...

A woman asks her husband if he’d like some breakfast, bacon eggs, perhaps a slice of toast? Grapefruit with ginger and coffee to follow? He declines. “It’s this Viagra,” he says, “It’s really taken the edge off my appetite.” At lunchtime, she asks if he would like something. A bowl of home made soup, maybe, with (mmmm) a cheese sandwich? Perhaps a plate of snacks and a glass of beer? He declines. “It’s this Viagra,” he says, “It’s really taken the edge off my appetite.” Come teatime, she asks if he wants anything to eat. She’ll go to the drive through and buy him a burger. Maybe a curry or a steak pie? Maybe he’d like a pizza? Or a tasty stir fry that would only take a couple of minutes? He declines. “It’s this Viagra,” he says, “It’s really taken the edge off my appetite.” “Well”, she says, “Would you mind getting off me? I’m starving.”

Green fingers

I can’t tell the difference between a rose and a dandelion. So when it came time to fix up my garden, I had no clue which plants to keep and which ones to remove. Until, that is, my mother gave me this handy tip:“Pull them all up. If it comes back, it’s a weed.”

Had scrambled eggs for breakfast again.
