Experience the Art of Dimense at 100% Design A unique technology for the production of bespoke, structured wallpaper is being launched in the UK at 100% Design Exhibition. Colourgen will be showcasing a broad range of 3D custom-made wallpaper samples that demonstrate the capabilities of the Dimense Wallpaper printer in the Emerging Brands area. The company will also talk about the opportunities the printer offers for interior designers and architects looking to deliver innovative and creative new styles of 3D and embossed bespoke wall coverings for clients. Until now, designers needed to source specialist, pre-textured media to create 3D style effects on wallpaper or go through a complex printing process to create the effect using standard printers. These methods add cost and time to a project and limit the designer in terms of what they can do creatively. The Dimense printer simultaneously prints and creates the structure of the wallpaper in one pass and is ready to hang immediately, technology that simply hasn’t existed until now. With Dimense, the designer has 100% flexibility to create the bespoke wall covering effects they desire. Mark Lambert, Director at Colourgen the UK’s exclusive distributor for Dimense, says, “These are really exciting times for Colourgen. Dimense is a unique and innovative product that is set to be a game changer in the digitally printed wallpaper market. We are looking forward to promoting this product to a broad audience across print, design, retail and interior decoration. Dimense really is a revolution in the creation of custom graphics with structure. We call it the ‘Art of Dimensing!’” He adds, “This will be the first time we’ve attended 100% Design and we’re really looking forward to it. We chose to launch Dimense at this show because of its outstanding reputation for supporting emerging innovation in interior design and because it’s so well attended by designers and architects from across the country and the world, which gives us a great opportunity to showcase what the printer can do to the people who could most benefit from its capabilities.” Dimense offers output that won’t fade in direct light, can be cleaned without scratching or damage and is C1 fire rated, making it perfect for high traffic areas such as hotels, retail and corporate environments. It can print at speeds of up to 20sqm/hour with a print width of 1.6m. Dimense

is an environmentally friendly technology based on latex eco-friendly inks and PVC-free structure-forming Ecodeco media. The Dimense printer will be shipping in the UK exclusively from Colourgen in September 2018 and Colourgen will be exhibiting at the 100% Design exhibition at Olympia from 19-22 September (stand no EB44). www.colourgen.com

Morgana to distribute Uchida products Morgana Systems, has extended an agreement to become the official UK distributor for all Uchida products for the UK. Although the Milton Keynes based company had already enjoyed sales success with several of Uchida’s small format multi-function machines, this agreement gives the company access to a wider range of products, further expanding Morgana’s finishing offering. To further promote the Uchida brand in the UK, Morgana will carry stock of all key units in the range to supply the existing network of Uchida dealers. “Morgana has had a long association with Uchida and the excellent products manufactured by the Japanese company,” said Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana. “We are delighted to have extended this agreement and are looking forward to expanding the sales of Uchida products across a variety of sectors in the industry. Certain products fill gaps in our extensive range of finishing equipment and will be welcomed by our direct sales team across the country. Others will be handled through dealer channels due to the niche applications and specific sectors that they are targeted at.” Multi-Function Finishing Units — The small format multi-function finishing devices in the AeroCut range are products already familiar to many customers and to the Morgana sales team. The AeroCut Nano is the entry-level model for cutting and slitting operations. It comes as standard with two single and two double slitter blades. These blades can be easily adjusted and secured using Uchida’s new, patented InstaSet bar technology. The AeroCut One is the next in the range. This machine will cut and slit, but also includes a creasing blade and matrix to crease digitally printed stocks. It includes a wide range of preprogrammed templates for the most common formats and can be manually adjusted for any other bespoke sizes. An optional perforation unit can be added to this machine to increase

the range of applications it can produce. The AeroCut Prime tops the range and comes equipped with barcode reading for quick job recall and automatic setting of the cutters. It is also equipped as standard with full and part cross perforation making it ideal to produce ticket and tear-off voucher applications. Both the AeroCut One and the Prime include a patented suction top feeder allowing easy production of sheets up to 400 gsm and up to 900mm in length. Paper Counters for Commercial Print — Uchida’s Countron AT is new to Morgana’s line-up. It can handle substrates up to 400gsm and sizes through to A0, though A3 and A2 are likely to be the most popular materials used. This device does not mark the sheet edges like some other counters so can ideally be used for both counting and batching of unprinted stock and for batching of printed applications, saving hours on a job typically done by hand. Also new to Morgana’s portfolio of postpress products is the range of Uchida paper joggers. These joggers are likely to appeal to a wide range of print producers using digital equipment. Static is an issue that frequently affects all digital printers and can be accentuated by a particular stock or the print room environment. Using a Uchida jogger (which incorporates an ioniser) before printing, assures a well separated stock being put into the feed bins, transferring printed stock from the press to the jogger then assures a well separated stock for the finishing unit, and also

helps to eliminate the static issues that so many in the post-press department complain about. The AJ-740i jogger unit can handle sheet sizes up to 330 x 450mm, and a maximum of 800 sheets can be loaded at any one time. Table-Top Booklets — Another newly released product from Uchida is a compact entry-level bookletmaker. This unit is ideal for the small in-plant where 20 or 30 copies of a publication might be required on a frequent basis — too small a quantity to justify one of Morgana’s range of high performance machines — this table-top unit provides the solution that many are seeking. The U-Booklet is a bookletmaking machine that automatically folds and staples documents up to SRA3, making it very easy to produce professionally finished booklets. Switch between functions with its easy to operate touch screen control panel with built in LCD counter. The U-Booklet can take a variety of stocks from 64 to 300gsm depending on paper quality. Thanks to its compact design and small footprint the U-Booklet fits into virtually any working space in the copy or print shop. Whilst Morgana is well known for its broad range of heavy duty folding equipment, the AeroFold Plus from Uchida fits neatly into the range. This table-top suction folder is capable of producing up to 18,000 folds an hour on materials up to SRA3 in size. It is ideally suited to in-plant and CRDs where top feeding and reduced noise levels are important and can produce the full range of common fold types Last but by no means least, Uchida offers a wide range of heavy-duty paper drills in single, two and four head formats. The four head Uchida LA-EX4 has a maximum drilling thickness of up to 65mm in drill sizes from 3-14mm. This unit operates on a single-phase power supply — something that will appeal to the smaller print operations or CRDs where three-phase power may not be available. Full details of Morgana’s product line-up can be found at: www.morgana.co.uk

Roland ‘Blown Away’ by entries to Hero Competition Roland DG has been overwhelmed by the strength of entries to the Roland Hero Awards 2018, a new competition recognising and celebrating Roland users across EMEA. Launched in April, Roland Hero is gathering pace with a wide variety of entrants from across the region, all with a unique story to tell. From the UK, Roland has heard about the heartbreaking tale of friendship from the disabled entrepreneur behind Hannah J Jewellery. Spanish windsurfing customisation brand In Your Face was proud to share their story of starting a successful business from almost nothing and, from Hungary, Rebel Grafikai Stúdió’s dedication to getting a major job completed was, frankly, exhausting! More stories have come from Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and more. “We really are blown away by the entries we’ve already received for the Roland Hero Awards,” says Gillian Montanaro, Head of Marketing, EMEA at Roland DG. “Roland users are incredibly special and do extraordinary things — combining their innovation, enthusiasm and drive to get the absolute best results from their Roland equipment — but we weren’t expecting such a wealth of amazing stories. “Some have been really exciting, a couple genuinely tear-jerking, others simply jawdropping, discovering what Roland users achieve. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster reading the entries — and we’re not even halfway through! It’s going to be very hard to choose a winner.”

The Roland Heroes initiative is open to all Roland DG users, whether they use UV-curable, eco-solvent or dye-sublimation printers, vinyl cutters, integrated printer/cutters or engraving systems, brand new or workroom veterans. The overall winner will jet off on a fantastic holiday — a choice between a relaxing stay in tropical Thailand, an exciting family trip to Florida and an unforgettable visit to Iceland — but every eligible business that gets

involved can display a badge of honour on their marketing material. A selected number of Spotlight Heroes will also be invited to share more about their business. The closing date is 31st October 2018 and, with entries from across EMEA already flooding in, Roland users are advised to submit their stories now. To find out more and register interest, please visit www.RolandHero.com

Hickling & Squires Invest in Xerox Iridesse Hickling & Squires has become the first UK QPP printer to invest in Xerox’s Iridesse Production Press as it looks to offer a greater variety of colour printing to its growing customer base. The Nottingham-based print company will use the Iridesse to bring new production-level application opportunities, including metallic dry inks, to its clients spanning the retail, leisure, education and public sectors. With increasing demand for metallic and iridescent colour printing, the Iridesse will enable Hickling & Squires to offer these features at a higher level of quality at a lower cost, and with greater flexibility than the previous alternative of using foils. The Iridesse can produce clear, silver or gold dry inks in addition

to CMYK in a single pass. The company has also invested in a new Xerox Versant 3100 press to manage the rising volume of orders. “Following the success of our two Xerox Versant 180 devices, we decided to upgrade to Xerox’s latest technology so we could continue to offer our clients best in class print,” said Lee Jordan, Sales Director at Hickling & Squires. “The Iridesse will enable us to stand out from the competition so we can continue to grow our business and bolster our commercial print offering with more personalised, eye-catching designs.” “This investment in the UK’s first Iridesse is a milestone for both parties and also marks the ten year anniversary of Xerox’s partnership

with Hickling & Squires,” said Mark Cannons, director and general manager, Graphic Communications, Xerox UK and Ireland. “We look forward to driving further success over the years to come.” www.xerox.com

Ashgrove announce launch of Casemaker 650 The Casemaker 650 is a revolutionary new piece of equipment for on-demand digital production of hardback book cases and paper over board ring binders. This heavy duty machine works with standard digitally printed sheets and various other bookbinding materials, together with pre-formed “planos”: low cost cover boards with a heat-sensitive resin coating which are available in a variety of sizes up to 30cm x 30cm when closed. The Casemaker mounts the sheets onto the cover using heat and pressure, and the integral Spinepress forms the steel-reinforced book spine with one pull of the handle. Ashgrove’s Rolf Smith enthuses: “The equipment is excellent quality and the process is ridiculously simple; lay your cover print onto the pre-made cover, place in the sealing drawer for 10 seconds, fold in the corners and repeat 10 second sealing for the reverse, place in the Spinepress, pull the handle down and it’s done! What is generally known as a difficult and

skilled process, can now be done by anyone with no mess and in as little as two minutes.” Another unique feature of this system is that the finished cases come complete with glue pre-inserted into the spine, enabling the internal pages to be easily inserted by the end user; the only equipment needed is a thermal desktop Unibinder. This make the system perfect for high-profile tender documents, photo-books, short-run

books, bespoke ring binders etc; when it’s this simple any document can be turned into a beautiful book, greatly adding to the value of the finished product! Casemaker 650 is available from Ashgrove who will install and maintain machines in the UK, and will be demonstrated live at the Print Show 18-20 September. New Watkiss Booklet Maker Watkiss Automation Ltd has announced the launch of a new booklet maker in the PowerSquare range. The PSQ160-WH is a hand-feed booklet maker for short run work, designed for flexible applications in a wide range of media sizes including long sheets and larger formats than existing options on the market. As more digital presses from companies such as Canon, Konica Minolta, Ricoh and Xerox can print duplex on long sheets, there is a growing demand for A4 landscape and other large format booklets. Paul Attew, sales director at Watkiss explains “The hand-feed PSQ160WH is ideal for this type of application. It is a very practical solution for low volume digital printed jobs, where ease of set-up and flexible media sizes are important — and where you can be confident that book quality is never compromised”. The PSQ160-WH is an ‘all-in-one’ booklet maker that also includes face trimming and square spine forming integral to the machine. As such, it has a small footprint meaning it will easily fit into any print environment. It produces SquareBack™ books that lie flat, stack easily and allow printing on the spine. Superior book quality is a feature of all PowerSquare booklet makers. The system uses in-process spine forming and automatic adjustment for book thickness, with auto folder mode, to optimise performance quality on thin and thick booklets. For ease of use, it has fully automatic setup using a tile-based user interface with touch and swipe functionality which will be familiar and intuitive to all smart phone users. It includes pre-set standard sizes and the ability to store custom job sizes. The wide media range process input sizes from 200 x 200mm to 370 x 620mm; with stock weights from 60 to 400gsm. Finished booklet sizes can range from 120 x 78mm to 370 x 305mm, and so encompass

all popular booklet applications such as A4 landscape, 12 x 12 inches, DL size (99 x 210mm) and CD booklets, which can all be completed in a single pass. The PSQ160-WH uses a zero-maintenance low impact stapling mechanism with moving clinches for flat, well-formed staples over the full range from 2 to 40 sheets. The adjustable staple pitch ensures the best staple position to suit the book size and extra high tensile staples ensure reliable performance on coated and thick papers. The PSQ160-WH can also be fitted with the optional P2T Side Trimmer that trims the top and bottom of the book for full-bleed colour applications. It is ideal for short run manuals, magazines, programmes, academic journals, financial reports and education materials. www.watkiss.com

Renz launch Argos F400 HD Cold UV Coater Renz and Argos Solutions have announced the launch of their new F400 HD Cold UV Coater which they say is the glossiest UV coating finish available on the market. Paul Simpson, Sales Manager at Renz said “Argos Solutions has entered new territory with this HD machine and the results are seriously impressive. It has all the features of previous Argos UV coaters, namely cold curing technology and very low cost per page, however this new HD gloss finish puts this machine in a league of its own”. The Argos UV Coaters, made in Belgium, only use two grams of coating per square metre compared to other manufacturers which struggle with below 10 grams per square metre. Furthermore, the LED UV lamp sleep mode ensures extremely low power consumption. “Flood UV coating has over the years developed a bit of a reputation for being unsafe due to the high temperatures and high emissions used on traditional UV coating machines mainly manufactured in the Far East” Simpson commented. The Argos Solutions range of UV coaters are recognised as the safest on the market with the cold lamp technology developed in Belgium, the machines do not go above 25 degrees Celsius. This also ensures instant curing time which allows the customer to process the paper directly after coating. “There’s never been a better time to invest in UV coating. Not only are the running costs substantially cheaper than plastic lamination, there’s also the added benefit of a plastic free finish”. The new Argos Solutions F400 HD model compliments the other flood UV coaters in the range, the F400 LED and the F400 with a traditional UV lamp. Argos also offer 540mm wide machine versions for the B2 size

market. The Argos UV coating machines can be put in-line with digital print engines or used as offline finishing machines coupled with a feeder and a stacker. Renz UK are the UK distributor for Argos Solutions. Earlier this year Renz GmbH and Argos Solutions entered into a formal manufacturing and distribution partnership. Iain Bullock, Managing Director, Renz UK, commented: “For Renz the partnership with Argos is a logical extension of our existing portfolio of high efficiency punching and binding machines for wire comb binding in the digital printing market segment”. www.renz.co.uk

New Mimaki Laminator Hybrid Services, has announced that the company’s new laminator — the Mimaki LA-160W that launched at FESPA 2018 — is now available for demonstration at its centrally located showroom. Designed to complement the popular UCJV Series LED UV printer/cutters, along with other staple products from its sign and graphics ranges, the Mimaki LA-160W laminator is available at 158cm wide and is heat-assisted to a maximum temperature of 60˚C. This heat assistance improves overlaminate film adhesion, particularly to surfaces printed with UV curable inks and reduces the potential for the silvering effect created by pressure sensitive overlaminates. “Thanks to their instant curing, LED UV inks tend to have a slightly uneven surface which can trap air bubbles during the laminating process, causing silvery specks that can take away from the appearance of the product,” says Hybrid’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman. “Immediate finishing with the LA-160W gives a quick, easy and high-quality solution for the occasions when a protective

overlaminate is required.” The Mimaki LA-160W sports fast laminating speeds of up to 7.5m per minute and is simple to use, thanks to it containing all its functions on one control panel. It features convenient access to the pressure handle and foot pedal and a take-up reel enables one operator to control the entire process. Designed specifically for use with LED UV curable inks and the new LA-160W laminator, Mimaki has also launched a dedicated film to ensure an integrated solution is provided. Mimaki Vision Laminate 310 Gloss film offers fine finishing with a glossy feel while maintaining the colour brightness of the print. This high quality, heat assisted overlaminate is also a cost-effective alternative to cold laminating films. “The new laminator was very well received when we showed it at both FESPA and Sign & Digital UK,” concludes Newman. “We welcome sign and graphics professionals to our showroom to see how this very neat system can benefit their display graphics output. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Ricoh Pro VC70000

To help print providers to accelerate the transfer of offset print to digital and stand out from the competition, the new continuous feed platform empowers commercial printers to produce quality applications, such as

high end catalogues and magazines, traditionally expected from offset presses. Additionally, Ricoh-developed inks enable up to 40% savings in paper costs while also expanding media support to offset coated papers, untreated papers and more. “We’re constantly hearing from clients that they are looking for lower costs, higher quality and increased productivity. What we’re announcing delivers these requirements, emphatically,” said Eef de Ridder, Vice President, Commercial Printing, Commercial & Industrial Printing Business Group, Ricoh Europe. “We are confident this new platform and new inks are exactly what the industry has been waiting for and will help Print Service Providers more quickly transfer to digital. This is a major breakthrough.” The Pro VC70000 joins the Ricoh Pro™ VC60000, Ricoh Pro™ VC40000, Ricoh Pro™ V20000 and InfoPrint 5000 in Ricoh’s inkjet portfolio. It offers multiple elements that help advance inkjet printing including a new engine platform for outstanding drying capacity, and new entrance and exit modules with footprint benefits. The platform prints at speeds up to 150 metres per minute, producing nearly 130,000 A4 impressions per hour and levers Ricoh’s latest state of the art piezo drop on demand print heads at up to 1200x1200 dpi resolution on uncoated, offset coated, inkjet treated or inkjet coated papers. Initially available for the Pro VC70000, Ricoh’s new inkjet inks rival the output of offset inks with their media versatility and compatibility with gloss coated stocks. They are designed to make the entire production system more versatile and economical as well as providing a significant boost in colour gamut. These latest Ricoh inks take quality enhancements further by enabling operators to print faster on a wider variety of media, including standard offset coated and uncoated papers, all with improved make-ready times. The Pro VC70000 will be available in winter 2018 in conjunction with the Ricoh developed inks. www.ricoh-europe.com

WOMEN IN PRINT

SHARP WOMEN LISTED FOR CHANNEL AWARDS Sharp Business Systems UK (SBSUK) has announced that seven of its leading female employees have been shortlisted at CRN’s inaugural Women in Channel Awards 2018.

[T]

he glitzy awards ceremony, which takes place on the evening of Thursday 18th October at the Hilton London Bankside hotel, will see hundreds of men and women from the technology sector come together to celebrate women in the industry and their achievements. Women making the shortlist from Sharp include: Corina Schiopu for Rising Star, Holly Chambers and Katherine Harris for Sales Employee of the Year, Kristie Scott-Woodham and Angela Townsend for Manager of the Year, and Alice Lee for Technical Employee of the Year. Adrienne Topping, SBSUK’s Group Brand & Marketing Communications Manager made the shortlist for Marketing Employee of the Year for her previous role at Midshire, she says: “It is such an honour to have made it this far and to be recognised with the other fantastic women from Sharp. “This is an exciting new chapter for myself and my team. Being directly involved with one of the top manufacturers in our industry has opened up a world of opportunities and I’m truly excited to develop myself and my role further.”

With other finalists from organisations like VMware, UKFast, Vodafone, HP Inc., and Cisco, the tone has been set for an exceptional evening with some of the world’s top tech companies. Katie Burridge, Senior Marketing Manager at Incisive Media comments: “The issue of diversity in the workplace is more relevant now than ever before, and it’s a proven fact that organisations with a more diverse workforce make better decisions. “As the voice of the UK IT channel, Women in Channel and CRN are committed to encouraging debate and research into the diversity deficit. Wherever the fault lies, there is no shortage of talented female staff at vendors, distributors and resellers capable of inspiring the next generation. We feel that shouting about the accomplishments of women in the channel - not because they are women, but because their accomplishments are worth shouting about — can play an important role in tackling the issue.” Sarah Coates, Head of HR at SBSUK says: “Moving further into the 21st Century it is imperative for organisations to embrace diversity, otherwise they are at risk of getting left behind. At Sharp, we are actively looking at our recruitment methods to see how we can encourage women in our company, and in the wider technology sector.” Businesses will travel from across the country to attend the ceremony and reiterate its message, with sponsors including: TechData, ComputaCenter, Cyber Business Growth, Exclusive Networks, and FXMA. ArtSystems’ Lorna Brindley shortlisted

ArtSystems’ Technical Service Manager, Lorna Brindley, is one of just 16 women shortlisted for ‘Role Model of the Year’ as part of the CRN Women in the Channel Awards 2018. Launched in April this year, the awards are designed to address gender imbalances that handicap some companies by highlighting the excellence of women working in the Channel. ArtSystems’ Managing Director, Steve Hawker,

said: “We’re all extremely pleased that Lorna has been shortlisted in the Role Model category for the CRN Women in the Channel Awards. Lorna’s hard work has made her a role model for everyone here at ArtSystems, so we’re all hoping her great example will be recognised and acknowledged a little further afield. “These awards recognise the vital role women play in our industry, and Lorna is a fine example. She guides her team to deliver excellence under pressure and keeps our customers printing. She is one of the few women leading service delivery teams in a largely male-dominated service sector — and she meets the challenge with grace and innovation. “She will always be a winner to all her colleagues at ArtSystems!” Responding to the news Lorna said: “I was shocked to be nominated by my superiors, and never expected to get through to the finals. This is a great honour and I’m really looking forward to the event in October” The CRN Award winners will be announced on 18th October 2018 during a ceremony at the Hilton Bankside London. www.artsystems.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET

NOT QUITE DEAD YET? Some advertising claims aimed at the mass market irritate Martin Christie for their assumption of gullibility in the viewing public, and others really annoy him with their visions of unrealistic expectations. When, for example, do you ever see a car that is not flashing down an entirely empty highway, or gliding round sweeping mountain bends, rather than stuck in an endless jam on the M25? The sleek lines and performance that will turn heads in fantasy land won’t get it another inch up that piece of tarmac.

[O]

ne of the more recent that raised rather more than my eyebrows was for a phone with a camera so advanced that photography would never be the same again. It featured several items of a traditional photographer’s kit being ritually destroyed to illustrate the point. It was this last visual insult that really aroused my hackles, not just on behalf of photographers, but every other professional whose expertise has been undermined by the fact that everyone who has a mobile phone assumes that they are a designer, and illustrator or an artist, just because they’ve got a free app downloaded off a cornflake packet. Sure, we accept that the inevitable progress of technology will make

certain equipment obsolete, and certain jobs redundant, but moving on to a reality where artificial intelligence does all the creative work, and not just the difficult stuff, is one step too far. At least in this writer’s lifetime. There is an important difference between simply copying and imitating and actually creating something new, otherwise we would still be perched in the trees or hiding in darkness in the caves waiting for somebody to invent fire. This is not to belittle the fantastic power and future potential of artificial intelligence, but to temper the unquestioned belief in its abilities. It is, and should be regarded as an aid to intelligence, not an alternative, and that applies to all manner of digitally assisted machines

including the much anticipated automated cars of which I have cautioned before in these columns. AI has always been very good at relieving us from otherwise tedious, repetitive tasks. Initially it was just calculating sets of numbers, then words, now images. From the calculator, to predictive text to face recognition was just a short hop in technical terms, but as we are all too well aware, the machine mind is not infallible. If I let this computer anticipate the words I am going to write this column would make even less sense than it usually does. On the other hand many of the long-winded, and often incomprehensible, press releases that we receive regularly at QPP read like they have already been produced by an electronic sausage machine with no intelligent human guidance. In many ways image manipulation is much easier for the artificial brain than creative writing because it has an original blueprint to work from. It can analyse content and compare components, as well as draw experience from previous examples to fix problems and produce desired effects. But all of these calculations are based upon established patterns and previous actions. All of the photo editing tools, whether in Photoshop, Lightroom or any of the many other image software programmes available depend upon a certain degree of anticipation and predictability learnt through machine experience, adjusting light shadow and colour for example. What they can’t do, in simple terms, is decide what will look best — only what is likely to look best based on recent history. It still needs a human eye to decide which looks better. At least it did until Huawei decided that their intelligent phone could do all that tedious creative stuff — having to use judgement and imagination, not to mention experience. It was probably inevitable from the moment photography became an instant point and click experience in the palm of everybody’s hands. You can’t make everyone a great photographer, but you can make the camera so good they don’t have to be. At least that’s the sales pitch. The reality is that 40 megapixel camera phones

September 2018

have been around for a while, Nokia launched one some years ago, and Hauwei has taken on some of the same so-called Pure View technology as well as some of the staff in Finland. And it really is stretching bare facts to compare the performance of a tiny lens and sensor with that of a much larger purpose built image device. The quality is extremely good, but there is always a catch. Packing lots of pixels into a small sensor causes problems, and the headline numbers are not an accurate reflection of real resolution. Technology has always given us better tools to perform existing tasks, so there is nothing truly revolutionary in that. And pictures in digital form have transformed the way we capture and share images over the last two decades. All that has happened is that performance that was previously only attainable with professional standard cameras and lenses has been matched with advances in intelligent software and compressed into something as small and convenient as a phone. That’s still pretty impressive but it’s not going to overturn photography as we know it because that has already been done. It’s not going to persuade camera enthusiasts to use a phone instead, though it may encourage them to leave the big bag of bits at home until it’s really needed. Professionals won’t be switching to phones anytime soon because even if they could take comparable shots in some circumstances, it’s hardly going to impress a fee paying client if you whip something out of your pocket instead of unloading a hefty array of bodies and lenses to justify the bill. What it may do, hopefully, is gradually improve the quality of images coming into the print shop, rather than the dismal offerings currently delivered from eponymous megapixel devices. As most people take photographs on fully automatic settings anyway, regardless of conditions, anything that improves the camera’s anticipation of what the actual picture should look like could well be a bonus in the long run. You can still expect some unfortunate errors however, as intelligent direction is not always as smart as it might be, and things that should be the focus of attention may be overlooked in place of something that just caught the camera’s eye. On balance we probably won’t see a massive improvement in submissions, only a marginal one. What we will see is a massive increase in file sizes and pixel count, so it’s important to review how we advise and inspect images. There may be

vivid-online.com

colour issues too, as saturation may be applied, for example to make the sky more blue or the grass more green. Any automated processing will result in destructive editing of the original to one degree or another and this is the crucial factor in trying to recover something printable from something that has just been made to look good on a small screen. In theory a 40mp photo image should print at A1, but the chances of a phone file having the sharpness and quality to look good at this size are fairly slim. The bulk of the pixels have been introduced to cope with low light, but in those conditions the camera will choose slow shutter speed and wide aperture which will really take a toll in image quality. It’s the actual sensitivity of the camera sensor, and its ability to react to light, that is important. Obviously more light will fall on a larger sensor and it is being given a much better source of analogue information before it even begins to turn photos of colour into electrical charges. That’s without even taking account the quality of lens, and the processing power of the device. Most current camera phones can already shoot a reasonable A4 print, but how much better and bigger the new generation can produce we wait to see and aim to do some actual comparisons. Certainly one of the most common questions

12 incredible print effects using the

QPP Matrix Strip Ad - 12 Print Effects Matrix Video.indd 1

19

that customers with a digital image present at the counter is how big will this blow up? Obviously you have a visual reference on your monitor screen, matched to what you know the printer will produce. That’s already an advantage the customer doesn’t have on his or her phone, and understanding the relationship between size and resolution is another. All digital cameras and phones capture images at 72ppi, it’s just that the better ones take bigger files, hence more actual pixels per square inch. And it’s the pixel count that’s important before you even get to colour and sharpness. With lots of pixels you have a chance of doing something with a print. With very few you have little choice, even if it does look good on the screen. In the early days of digital, camera images, or those downloaded from the internet tended to be quite small, and measured in hundreds of pixels or less. So it used to be the advice that anything that couldn’t reach 300ppi at the output size was really not going to be suitable for print, and images often had to be pushed to match that target. Now images can be in the several thousands it’s potentially the other way around, and advising a customer to save an image at 300ppi may actually be reducing the potential quality of print. A 12Mb camera should be capable of taking an A4 at the equivalent of 300ppi, anything bigger maybe over minimum specifications but is likely to be a better image as a result. So it makes no sense to advise saving a smaller file and losing all those valuable pixels. Of course customers may not be able to tell pixel sizes on a phone so best practice is to save as big as possible and sort it out at the sharp end. If you have the file open, whether in Photoshop or in a browser, a simple tip is to look at the number of pixels, and without getting into any complicated sampling equations just take off the last two numbers of each value. The result will give you a rough size guide in centimetres. So a 12mb image file that is approximately 2000 x 3000 pixels in size will go to 20x30cm and a 3000x 4000 pixel file to 30 by 40cm, and so on. It’s a very simple way of looking at it, and not an exact science but easier to explain than aspect ratios and it seems to work! That way you’ll be ready to match the customer who tells you it must be a good image because it was taken with a very good phone! Proper photography, and human intelligence is thankfully alive and well despite the best efforts of marketing campaigns.

THE PRINT SHOW 2018

PRINT SHOW PREVIEW The Print Show 18th to 20th September NEC Birmingham is the must visit event of the year. Leading brand suppliers are ready to showcase print innovation and opportunities. Visitors will benefit from new launch demonstrations, advice, seminars and networking. Paying tribute to print’s glorious past

The Print Show will once again this year offer visitors the opportunity to take a trip through time and visit some of the glory days of years gone by in the industry at the Traditional Print Masterclass. One of the most popular show features since the event debuted in 2015, this area is entirely dedicated to traditional printing techniques that have helped to shape the modern industry. Those in attendance can try their hand at some of these techniques and test out some of the technology on display. Experts from various backgrounds will be on hand to talk visitors through how the kit works and help visitors produce their own work to take home with them as a souvenir of their day at The Print Show. Chris Davies, event director for The Print Show, said: “While much of the focus at The Print Show will, as always, be on the many new launches that will be taking place across the show floor, the Traditional Print Masterclass will once again be a major highlight for visitors. “The Print Show is the only industry event to offer such a fantastic experience that allows people both inside and outside of the print sector to have a go at creating print the old fashioned way. For some, it will surely bring back great memories of when they first started out in the industry, and for others, it will be a brand new experience that they will remember for a long time.”

Masterclass cutting edge technology

Among the featured companies at the Masterclass will be Signature Bindings, run by Glenn Malkin. A traditional hand bookbinder, Glenn works for customers both in the UK and overseas to repair books and Bibles, as well as create new bindings. Using entirely traditional methods and tools Signature Bindings has attracted a wide range of projects and special commissions from collectors and bibliophiles as well as work from individuals and

organisations. Looking ahead to The Print Show, Glenn said: “At the Traditional Masterclass this year, I will be demonstrating some of the traditional techniques, tools and materials I use. “Visitors can also have a go at making a fun folding mini-book to take away. This small pocket book uses no glue, thread or staples and is a great little project to get the kids to do at home. There will also be a display of some of my design bindings, as well as books made at some of my workshops and courses.” Also appearing at the Masterclass is the Letterpress Collective, which was set up five years ago to protect and use letterpress machines and type in Bristol, as well as educate people about this much-loved process. The Letterpress Collective also collaborates with artists to print material. Nick Hand of the Letterpress Collective said: “We’re currently producing a set of themed playing cards with the singer songwriter Jeb Loy Nichols. The theme is country soul singers and we are looking forward to launching them at The Print Show. “We are aiming to print some packaging at The Print Show for the cards. People will be able to print their own pack for a set of cards. “The Masterclass in particular has some of the most respected letterpress printers still working in the UK, and the work on show displays not just traditional print but also how it is being used in a contemporary way. “The Print Show itself is always buzzing and has surprises around every corner. It is also the only place where 600-year-old print technology nestles shoulder to shoulder with cutting edge digital machinery.” Elsewhere, the St. Bride Foundation will be giving visitors the chance to see kit from the middle of the 19th Century and techniques used in Fleet Street until as late as the 1990s. Michael Clayton of the St. Bride Foundation say that he is looking forward to the event and seeing plenty of familiar faces in the hall. Clayton completed a six-year apprenticeship as a letterpress compositor in 1970 and spent his career working all over London, including nine years on Fleet Street. Clayton, who joined St. Bride in 2011, says: “The Print Show demonstrates how the history of printing has evolved; from the Traditional Print Masterclass area, through to the modern digital age. The event is relevant to all ages.” www.theprintshow.com

Ashgate launch New Casemaker

Ashgate has announced the launch of their new semi-automated Fastbind Casematic a46a casemaker and the Print Show will be first UK showing of their large format manually operated KF640 A4 landscape bookletmaking system. Lewis Price, Managing Director at Ashgate, said, “With all the features of Fastbind’s standard Casematic. the a46a takes casemaking to the

September 2018

next level with some new innovations, making it faster and more consistent.” The overall process remains the same — peel the printed tacking sheet, place it using the guides and light table, place the grey boards, cut the corners, fold the sides and the cover is ready. The Casematic a46a’s table is an air bed with suction holes. Once the boards are laid down, the guides automatically rise up so that the boards float over the table, making it easier to move the cover on the table. Other features include a motorised edge folding unit. The unit is equipped with sensors and a motor to press the edges once inserted in the unit. The maximum folding thickness is 5mm. The operator can adjust the brightness of the light and the length of the illumination for shorter or longer covers. Ergonomically designed, it has wheels for easier operation and mobility and a storage area for supplies. Optional tables can be added on each side which can slide open and closed. They are recommended for a gluing unit, Presso or small laminator. The new casemaker comes onto the market at circa £10,000. “It has been designed as an intermediate machine which requires little skill to produce professional, high quality hard back books,” Lewis commented. The Print Show is the first UK showing of the KAS KF640 bookletmaking system, the first of its type on the market to produce a maximum booklet size of 320mm x 320mm and more common sizes like A4 landscape and 12” x 12”. “At under £16,000 for the bookletmaker and trimmer and sub £22,000 with our in-line square fold unit, it really punches above its weight,” said Lewis. It operates at 1000 books an hour and will handle a maximum sheet size of 640mm x 320mm, which means that SRA2 sheets will not require pre-trimming of the short edge on a guillotine prior to producing A4 booklets. For shorter runs, it is ideal because it is simple to set up, adjust and change from one size to another. With one machine you can finish booklets above and beyond A4 landscape and down to A6. www.ashgate.co.uk

These include the brand new RDC Rotary Die Cutter, Maxit Adhesive System for duplexing, FoilTech Digital Foiling System, Card Cutting, Letterpress, Plate Making and Thermography, all designed to help customers achieve the maximum profit from their work. Using the latest technology flexible dies, any size, shape and format can be quickly and easily produced from a single sheet on the RDC Rotary Die Cutter. This impressive machine can die cut, kiss cut, score and perforate in a single pass on stocks ranging from 120gsm to 400gsm. Products that can be produced include labels, greeting cards, business cards, postcards, event tickets, stationery, playing cards, folded boxes and retail packages. Using a top sheet air feed system, deep pile feeder and double sheet detector the RDC Rotary Die Cutter reduces the problems which can occur with today’s demanding digital outputs. Accuracy of the final product can be controlled by working from either the lead edge or a printed registration mark The Maxit adhesive system uses a motorised roller coater to apply a very thin, smooth coating of a unique hot melt adhesive. Once the substrate is coated it will stick permanently to just about any surface including plastic, wood and metal. The adhesive will not transfer to

Nottingham-based specialist distributor, ArtSystems, has announced it will be attending The Print Show with Summa’s state-of-the-art F1612 flatbed cutter as part of a live, print finishing demonstration, including the first UK showing of ONYX 18 RIP software. ArtSystems is the exclusive UK & Ireland trade distributor for Summa and supports the nationwide reseller channel. Andrew Edwards, ArtSystems’ Divisional Manager for Sign & Display, explains: “We wanted to utilise the excellent opportunities The Print Show provides to demonstrate the advantages of using Summa technology to the broadest possible variety of print professionals. “Summa’s smart technology — coupled with the marque’s superb build quality — minimises media waste and streamlines the finishing process. When you realise that the average amount of media waste in a print business is around 30%, any process that can reduce and manage that waste, while also improving workflow, puts profit straight back into the business.” The Summa F1612 flatbed cutter will form the centrepiece for a live print workflow solution driven by ONYX 18, the latest print management and RIP software from ONYX Graphics. The Print Show will be the first formal showing of ONYX 18 at a UK trade show. The full range of Summa’s conventional roll-fed cutters will also be on show to demonstrate how they can support specific workflows for printand-cut applications. Andrew concludes: “During the show there will be a lot of emphasis on demonstrating how even small changes can have a major cost impact; enabling print professionals to expand their offerings, streamline workflow, and improve that all-important bottom line.” www.artsystems.co.uk

There will be live demonstrations of how to dye sub images onto 3D objects with a vacuum oven, a great opportunity for those who want to break into the promotional products sector. Epson’s latest business inkjet printers from its Workforce Enterprise range will also be on display. These deliver Epson’s signature inkjet technology, with low environmental impact, low intervention and high productivity, to small workgroups to save money, time and energy. “We hope to generate new sales at the show,” says Mr McMullin. “There is an opportunity to educate existing and potential customers and to demonstrate the rapid return on investment and profit potential of our products.” www.epson.co.uk

Epson Top Seven

Epson will run at least seven different printer models this year. These will demonstrate the breadth of applications and high quality results achievable from its dye sublimation, textile, label, photographic, POS and signage printers. On loan from fashion designer Richard Quinn, who uses Epson SureColor SC-F dye sublimation and DTG equipment, will be the stunning floral flowing outfit famously worn by Amal Clooney, wife of George Clooney, at the New York Met Gala earlier this year. In addition a range of products including fabrics, vinyls and wallpapers produced by textile students at the Birmingham City University will also be displayed. Phil McMullin, sales manager of Epson UK, says: “Now that IPEX has closed we believe more people than ever will attend The Print Show and we welcome its return to the NEC. Visitors to our stand can see just how versatile our products and applications can be. Printers have an opportunity to expand the range of applications they offer and to do more than ever on any one of our products, for instance both textiles and promotional products on a single dye sublimation printer. Printers should come with open and curious minds and be prepared to be blown away by the potential of today’s digital printing equipment.” The product line up includes two signage printers (SureColor SC80600 and SC-S 60600), photographic/proofing printer (SureColor SC-P20000), a dye sublimation printer (SureColor SC-F6200), a DTG printer (SureColor SC-F2100) and two label printers (ColorWorks C7500

Morgana Systems has announced the release of its own branded Rotary Die-Cutter (RDC). The Morgana RDC is aimed at producers of cartons, labels, and personalised items such as business cards, greetings cards, and postcards. Commenting on the introduction of this new machine, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “The RDC has been designed to meet the needs of today’s digital printers. These companies are keen to handle as many finishing tasks in-house as they can. This unit provides the capability to die-cut, kiss-cut, score, and perforate, all in one pass if necessary, at speeds of up to 4,500 sheets per hour. “By increasing the services on offer a printer has a greater control of delivery times, rather than having to rely on third-party suppliers. Diecutting is one of those capabilities that is being demanded more and more as customers seek ways to make their print stand out from the crowd, and is an excellent facility for a printer to use to go and win new business.” First demonstrated to visitors at the “Taking Print Further” event in March of this year, held at Morgana’s Milton Keynes premises, the RDC will receive its official UK national show debut at The Print Show. The cutting system is composed of an upper magnetic cylinder, holding the cutting matrix, and a lower counter cylinder. A pin register system on the magnetic cylinder helps the operator to install the cutting matrix accurately. Side alignment of sheets is managed by adjustable straps, allowing the machine to maintain accurate sheet position. An easily adjustable waste management system separates and diverts waste material whilst giving a consistent supply of the finished pieces to a conveyor delivery. The top-sheet, air-suction deep pile feeder ensures reliable sheet feeding and can accommodate up to 400mm of printed sheets, whilst an eightinch touch screen user interface provides for fast and efficient job change overs. Maximum sheet size for the RDC is 368mm x 508mm, with a maximum die cutting area of 361mm x 472mm. Material thicknesses of up to 400gsm can be cut. www.morgana.co.uk

Sign & Digital 2019 ‘Face-to-face’ show website Sign & Digital UK, the trade exhibition for the visual communications sector, has announced the launch of its 2019 show website and striking new design that reflects the power of face to face marketing in building business and the innovative and creative nature of the sign and display industries. A ‘must attend’ event for all those involved in the production of signage and displays, Sign & Digital UK provides essential advice and learning for business owners to maximise revenues from the opportunities new and existing market sectors provide. With over 30 years of heritage as a national exhibition, the show evolves each year to showcase the very latest advances in technologies and applications. Speaking for the Sign & Digital UK team, Marketing Manager, Jane Lewis said “2018’s Creativity Brought to Life campaign was about positioning what Sign & Digital UK represents. It focused on how we showcase the opportunities our industry offers businesses to realise amazing creativity. It was very well received, so we know the message was the right one. This new campaign is about building on the success of that message. A fresh visual approach combines a contemporary, design led influence with images of the materials and technology that are driving the industry forward. It cements the link between creativity of the mind and the creativity of our industry and communicates how Sign & Digital UK delivers a cutting-edge experience for exhibitors and visitors alike. It’s a message of opportunity for everyone involved.” Foundry 12 is the agency behind this striking design and the Founder, Ian Bamford, explained how the design developed from last year. “Sign & Digital UK is a fantastic show that brings together innovative businesses with creative individuals looking for ways to turn ideas into reality. It’s all about creativity, and how cutting-edge tech can deliver it. The 2018 campaign started to get that message across, so it was important we built on it and didn’t ‘throw it away’. For 2019 we’ve pushed the idea a bit further. The individual, and the ideas ‘alive’ in their head are still central, but what’s been created is a fresh approach that represents the direction the industry is moving in. More design influenced, with the wonderful materials that offer greater customisation and flexibility being woven into the visual message. It encapsulates how originality of thought can be delivered.” The website showcases leading suppliers from across the signage, print, display, décor and design industries. More than 75 companies have already booked for Sign & Digital UK 2019 and include AG/CAD Ltd, Atlantic Tech Services, Blackman & White Ltd, Boxford, CMYUK Digital, Complete CNC, D & K Europe, Graphtec GB, Gravograph, HEXIS UK, InkTec Europe, R A Smart, Sabur Digital, Signgeer, Spandex, Tecna UK,

Ultima Displays, William Smith Group 1832, and Zund. The show is also welcoming first time exhibitors, ABC Display, M3 Online, NEPATA GmbH, PROTEK srl and UK Industrial Tapes. The website also contains a library of industry articles, videos and news pieces. New site functionality will allow visitors to curate content into personal wish lists based on topics of particular interest to them. New show features to be announced in the coming months will continue to focus on free to attend interactive demonstrations and workshops plus practical advice from industry experts in the Main Stage theatre. IPEX TO CLOSE IPEX, the international print technology and equipment event, is to close after a period of consultation with the industry. The most recent edition, IPEX 2017, took place at the NEC in Birmingham late October and early November 2017. Over 150 companies from 20 countries exhibited to showcase the latest solutions in print technology and equipment, while over 7,000 visitors attended to source new products and keep abreast of industry trends. Rob Fisher, IPEX Event Director, said: “Through IPEX, we’re proud to have played a role in an important and diverse industry, and to have supported a brand that has such a long history. We enjoyed organising

and delivering IPEX 2017 and received positive feedback from exhibitors, many of whom recorded excellent levels of interest and sales at the event.” Fisher continues: “The changing market conditions and appetite for a large-scale event which focuses on Print in Action continues to be challenging. Having engaged with a range of exhibitors and partners to evaluate the options for IPEX, we have concluded that the requirements of the industry no longer match our own in terms of the cycle, scale and what is required to help us further support and fully invest in the brand. “We’d like to wish our partners, exhibitors, and everyone we’ve worked with on IPEX every success as the industry continues to evolve.”

IN REMEMBRANCE

THE SAGA OF THE SILENT SOLDIER The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products recently put up a commemorative soldier outside their offices to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

[T]

he cut-out silhouette of the WW1 serviceman was created by the Royal British Legion to remember the brave men and women of our armed forces and what they sacrificed for our freedom. Staff members named the Silent Soldier ‘George’ and were extremely proud of him and what he represented. Unfortunately, just a few days later, George was stolen. HR Manager Grace Mitchell sprang into action, contacting the police and local media. The story of the missing soldier was covered on Eagle Radio, a local newspaper, a local TV channel and even BBC News. Members of staff from both The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products also took to social media in a campaign to track down the soldier who was absent without leave. The activity attracted the attention of Keith Bean from Historic Aldershot who heroically set up a Just Giving page to raise funds for a replacement. Generous members of the public donated, in memory of family members who had fought in the war, and over £2,100 was raised. This was enough to buy Silent Soldiers for several sites, including a nearby park and local schools. The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products were delighted to receive a replacement soldier. Mick Mills from Aldershot British Legion met with Grace Mitchell and Jo Cheesman to present the new recruit. But the saga of the Silent Soldier still had one more twist in the tale. A local taxi driver found the original soldier dumped nearby. George was returned home but had clearly seen frontline action and sported several war wounds. Now the Silent Soldier is back standing proudly on display, this time

welded in place with CCTV trained on him. The Pen Warehouse and Snap Products would like to thank everyone who was involved in bringing George home and to those who helped raise money for the British Legion to fund more commemorative soldiers. www.pens.co.uk • www.snapproducts.co.uk

Antalis commits to Biodiversity 2020 Antalis has reinforced its strong commitment to sustainability by joining the Act4nature biodiversity initiative. The initiative, which was launched in July, follows the French Government’s recent announcement of its Biodiversity Plan and unites 60 companies in their shared commitment to protect and restore biodiversity. For Antalis, this voluntary pledge is in addition to the group’s existing policy of integrating biodiversity into its corporate social responsibility and comes as the company reveals it is on track to cover 85% of its supply with a responsible traceability process by 2020. This commitment is in-line with Biodiversity 2020, the national strategy for England’s wildlife and ecosystem services, and forms part of the group’s existing policy of integrating biodiversity into its corporate social responsibility. Antalis relies heavily on natural resources, whether directly from forestry through raw materials, or indirectly via energy and water consumption. Recognising that 80% of the world’s biodiversity lives within forest areas, one of the business’ key priorities within its CSR agenda is to ensure responsible sourcing of its products and favouring more responsible supply, thus encouraging the circular economy. Matthew Botfield, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager for Antalis, comments: “Antalis has prioritised the traceability of its products for a long time. Thanks to our Antrak™ platform, we have 50,000 pieces of information available which enables us to accurately trace our supply chain.” In committing to cover 85% of its supply with a responsible traceability process by 2020, this means more specifically that Antalis is working to: • Achieve its goal of 85% of supplies coming from FSC or PEFC certified fibrous products and/or recycled products, therefore guaranteeing the preservation of biodiversity thanks to early forest management (figure currently at 74%) • Promote the consumption of recycled paper by highlighting the Green Star System™ • Guarantee, through its Antrak™ platform, the complete traceability and sustainability of 85% of fibrous goods, thanks to the integration of a due diligence (since 2013) which is based on the list of endangered species from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) • Transparently report on its impact and achievements in terms of biodiversity Matthew Botfield concludes: “It comes as no surprise that customers are increasingly demanding in terms of environmental guarantees. NGOs’ campaigns on deforestation have not only challenged the way companies produce, but also how clients consume. We strive for exemplarity throughout the value chain: from the forest to our clients’ printers. Therefore, traceability is not only about enhancing the image of Antalis; it is also about creating value for all our clients and end-users.” www.antalis.co.uk

Blake partner with School in a Bag

Blake has announced that as part of their enhanced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme they will be partnering with the charitable organisation School in a Bag, forming an ongoing relationship that they hope will benefit the lives of thousands of school children across the globe. As Innovation and Marketing Director Tim Browning noted this marks a very exciting period for Blake: “The Blake School in a Bag partnership marks the start of a new phase in our CSR Responsibility programme. We are keen to ensure that we can measure the impact of all our activity. Our mission is to support social mobility for children by ensuring they have access to the materials they need to learn and be educated. There are millions of children in the world who will never go to school and this will continue to be denied from them, unless we can make a difference.“ The partnership was formally launched in July, through Blake holding a Red themed School in a Bag Charity Day, where over £10,000 was raised to go towards funding for the School Bags. This partnership has been the result of significant work and development from both Blake and School in a Bag. The Charity Day represented a fantastic launch event for this exciting collaboration, as School in a Bag’s founder Luke Simon explains: “Through initial meetings and discussions, we were already very impressed by the detail and thinking that had been put in to the School in a Bag Blake Envelopes launch day across all departments within the business and we were very honoured and excited to be included in it. The novel way of raising money on the day through sales made was so clever and seeing the financial total grow into funded SchoolBags added great suspense and reward to a fantastic day. We are so delighted that the ambitious target was surpassed and incredibly grateful to everyone at Blake Envelopes for their positivity and hospitality before and during the day. We look forward to showing everyone the beneficiaries of the SchoolBags they funded in Romania and Zambia.” The success of the day was marked by the substantial funds raised but, equally, the fantastic and awe-inspiring participation from both internal staff from Blake and also numerous external customers: “This launch event and the funds we have contributed has meant that over 600 children will now have the materials they need to learn. We would like to thank all our business partners who engaged with us to exceed our first target and look forward to their ongoing support. Together we can make a significant and sustained difference to the lives of these children” www.schoolinabag.org • www.blake-envelopes.com

PRINT FUTURE

2020 PRINT VISION

SHARE YOUR 2020 PRINT VISION

This new regular 2020 Print Vision feature is open to all for print predictions over the next couple of years. The 36,000 quick print pros that, in the front line of the print industry, are so often asked ‘What’s next in print?’ Xerox — How digital print is moving beyond CMYK

In a challenging economic climate where many industries are struggling with digital transformation, the printing trade has an ace up its sleeve. It comes in the form of digital printing, helping print companies to reinvigorate themselves by offering their customers more features, better quality, and greater flexibility at lower costs. Automation and streamlined workflows are also driving cost and process efficiencies in the creation, campaign management and manufacturing process. In this article, we take a look at three ways that the printing industry is moving beyond CMYK. Printing may have a history rooted in CMYK, but the move to digital print and digital enhancements has ushered in the ability to print a new range of colours, specifically metallics and whites, while also increasing quality, flexibility and speed. It’s a technology that customers have been crying out for, and an $813 million market that’s predicted to grow at an impressive 27 per cent through 2020. The digital market is born out of a demand to make money, for print companies to command premium prices and offer better value for their clients by providing digital printing enhancements. It’s a market where specialty dry ink technology is leading the way. Printers are currently using specialty dry inks to innovate, and a range of new colours aren’t the only advantages. The latest specialty dry ink stations are opening up new opportunities for rich layering and eye-catching embellishment, with unparalleled vibrancy and a smoother finish that boasts a more even sheen, adding extra depth and a more consistent look.

Mark Cannons, Director and General Manager at Xerox UK.

CASE 1: INTRODUCING SPECIALTY DRY INKS Specialty dry inks offer an increased colour gamut, and efficiency is set to improve, with printers capable of printing up to 120 pages a minute. Printing resolutions of 2400dpi also means companies won’t have to sacrifice quality in the quest for speed. This can help print companies to provide short runs, quick turnaround and greater personalisation; printing on demand is a possibility, and printers can act as a virtual document repository while also offering improved options for just-in-time manufacturing. When combined with advanced automation and streamlined workflows that cut the number of human touches required to receive, plan, execute and deliver print jobs, all this makes a massive difference to running costs, productivity and business supply chains. CASE 2: WHITE IS THE NEW BLACK Market research by Keypoint Intelligence has indicated that over 80 per cent of European

respondents see white as the specialty colour they need most. It’s a colour that Xerox has already introduced, with the company’s latest White Dry Ink for the Xerox iGen 5 Press print station making it possible to print incredibly bright whites on coloured substrates and packaging. The White Dry Ink provides a unique solution, more than doubling the brightness and opacity of competitive inks for digital presses, and setting a new industry benchmark. Better yet, that benchmark is delivered after only one or two passes, surpassing the four or more passes traditionally required by competitive digital presses, saving on time, resources and money. Developing such inks presents a particularly tough challenge, requiring a number of hardware and software changes. CASE 3: CREATING EXCITEMENT WITH SILVER AND GOLD Lessons learned when creating White Dry Ink have also been put to good use when it com to other colours beyond CMYK, with smaller EA toners making it possible to deliver metallic silver and gold — two of the other most indemand colours — using specialty dry inks as well. Digital foil stamping has previously provided an alternative for print companies wanting metallic colours and high quality, but metallic specialty dry inks provide a better blend of quality and affordability, incorporating flecks of metal to deliver outstanding image quality with a true metallic appearance. As with White Dry Ink, Xerox’s metallic specialty dry inks are capable of delivering stunning results in a single pass, saving money and resources and helping print companies to take on more short run, short turn digital jobs without compromising on quality.

It’s time to move beyond CMYK

With benefits like these, the case for moving beyond CMYK is clear. These are features that buyers are more than willing to pay for, with printing companies indicating a willingness to pay a premium of between 24 and 89 per cent over CMYK. With a 2016 InfoTrends study indicating potential profit margins on digital print enhancements as high as 400 per cent, it’s an investment well worth making, and as a result the same InfoTrends report predicts the digital print market growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27 per cent through to 2020. If the switch to digital print is accompanied by greater automation, we could also see advances in creativity, with craft and automation proving complimentary forces. User-friendly technology has sparked a process of democratisation, and creative automation is becoming more accessible to print professionals every day. Only a small fraction of the market has already converted to digital methods, with just one half of one per cent of today’s colour pages produced on a digital press or using a digital process. It’s already a thriving industry, however, and predicted growth and the potential for printing companies result in an opportunity that’s simply too good to miss. www.xerox.co.uk

Classic Car Descends to La Scala’s Iconic Stage Italy-based print provider, Colorzenith, has 3D printed a life-size replica of the classic Italian car, Lancia B24 for the Don Pasquale opera, performed in Europe’s largest opera house, La Scala in Milan, Italy.

The set designers, Davide Livermore together with GIҠFORMA, required a lightweight car for an iconic scene where soprano, Rosa Feola, descends from the ceiling to the stage while sitting in the car. Reflecting the growing adoption of 3D printing solutions in scenic design, Colorzenith produced the car on its Massivit 1800 3D Printer. The 4.23-m long and 1.3m high (13.88ft x 4.27ft) car was 3D printed in four parts in under four days.

Once printed, the car was sanded and strengthened with an internal metal frame to withstand the month-long performance. The team also glued headlights, mudguards and door handles to create a more lifelike appearance and provide a whole new immersive experience for theatre audiences. “Massivit 3D printing was the perfect solution to produce a lightweight replica of the car. Considering the tight production timeframe, it was impossible to realise this with another technology,” says Florian Boje, Founder of GIҠFORMA. www.massivit3d.com

Roland ‘open up all sorts of doors’ for First Display First Display started off in taxi advertising, but an investment in Roland printing equipment has seen it explore exciting new avenues — despite a lack of printing experience. “We were originally founded in June 2004, buying and selling taxi advertising,” explains Jamie Bowes, Director of Edinburgh-based First Display. “All the printing was outsourced — we were getting wraps done in Glasgow and down south, which meant we were always bound by other people’s timelines. We were just let down too many times.” First Display took the step of bringing its printing in-house by installing a Roland DG SOLJET XC-540 in 2007, followed by a SOLJET PRO III XJ740 two years later, both of which have been running ever since. SOLJET systems are versatile machines, suitable for a wide range of printing applications with fantastic image quality and productivity. Despite not coming from a printing background, Jamie and his team quickly got to grips with the technology, leading to a whole new world of business opportunities. “The Roland printers opened up all sorts of doors for us,” says Jamie. “I take a ‘don’t ask, don’t get’ approach so we went to ad. companies and offered all types of different printing jobs we could do on the Rolands, besides taxi advertising. Now we’re working with multiple big names like Tesco, RBS, M&S and various other brands.” “We moved in 2014 to bigger premises (7,500sq ft.) to maximise our work. We deal with clients from way up north all the way down to Cornwall. Printing everything in house means we can manage the quality and control turnaround times.” In its eleven years as a Roland user, First Display has also added two Roland VersaEXPRESS RF-640 printers to its workroom. These large-

format inkjet systems deliver excellent speeds and a wide colour gamut, but it’s the quality that keeps the wheels turning at First Display. “Our business is modelled on repeat custom. We look after our clients,” says Jamie. “Some people think that for a banner seen ten feet away the quality doesn’t need to be very good. But that’s not what we’re about — we’re about making our customers happy and that means delivering higher quality work.” Around 70 per cent of First Display’s work is for trade customers, producing output such as banners, vinyls, wallpapers and many other media, all on Roland systems. It also offers retail signs and commercial for-sale signs. “For trade customers you have to be correct,” says the company’s director. “You need the speed but you also need the quality. It’s for this reason that I wouldn’t use any other machine than a Roland”. As Jamie Bowes was relatively new to the wide-format printing sector at first, he regularly attends trade events such as Sign and Digital UK, FESPA, SGIA and shows in China. “It helps me find out about new products, ideas and people,” he says. “I have had some great inspiration from meeting Roland at events. I find that opportunities come from having a chat.” www.rolanddg.co.uk • www.firstdisplay.co.uk

Rage Designs back to its racing roots with Roland Rage Designs has a solid reputation as a producer of incredible custom bodywork and helmet graphics for motorcycle racers, but it says its newly installed Roland printer/ cutter will see it return to its roots in the fan community. Michael Boote started repairing motorbikes and painting helmets for friends in 1993, but by 2000 this hobby had become Rage Designs, a highly respected brand working with professional racing teams in the British Superbike Championship and more. Until 2008 the company — based in Cheshire, UK — had outsourced all its vinyl graphics work, before forming a partnership with a local sign-maker with whom it shared a VersaCAMM printercutter. Ten years on, having produced work for racers including Troy Lee, Joe Screen, Steve Johnston, Carl Fogarty, Steve Hislop and Martin Jessopp, the scale of demand was such that Rage Designs decided to bring all graphics production entirely in-house. Michael bought a Roland VersaCAMM SP-300i, which allowed the company to monitor quality as well as significantly reduce turnaround times. “It’s the machine I dreamed of having,” says the Rage Designs owner. “It’s just brilliant. Everything you see on our social media photos has been produced on the Roland — I don’t

know how the company would work without it.” Michael admits that there was a learning curve involved after the VersaCAMM SP-300i was installed earlier this year, but the team soon got to grips with the VersaWorks RIP software and the numerous features of the printer/cutter hardware. A typical job for Rage Designs is to print and cut motorcycle body decals with sponsors’ logos. These are small — around 600mm wide — but each race requires around 50 for each design to allow for damaged decals to be replaced. It’s also common for these stickers to be given out to fans at race events. It’s these fans that have directed the next step for Rage Designs. The company works with the biggest names in motorsport — racers, teams, bike brands and sponsors — but Michael Boote, a true fan at heart, wants to work more with the community. “It sounds like a backwards step but it isn’t really — we produce exclusive work for highprofile racing teams but I want to work for race fans, the guy in the street, as well,” he explains.

“Recently we had an order for a BMW graphics kit from a private individual and he couldn’t believe that a company who works with such famous riders would even reply to his email. When he received the work from us a few days later he sent a really cool thank-you message. “The Roland printer/cutter means we can do more of that — really reconnect with the fans.” Michael adds that attending motorcycle races can be ‘a bit of a busman’s holiday’ but he still loves going to events like the recent Isle of Man TT Races, which were ‘absolutely fantastic — I’m still a massive motorcycling fan’, he says. He also loves his job, and has entered the Roland Hero Awards to share the story of Rage Designs with the world. Having picked up a Bronze Award at the MACtac Creative Awards for its bodywork for Shaun Muir’s team at the 2018 World Superbike Series, Rage Designs is already speeding ahead in 2018. “We are very happy we chose a Roland DG UK product and hope to continue a long relationship to pro-duce many more stunning helmets and bikes,” says Michael. ‘I absolutely love my Roland machine.” For more information on Rage Designs, please visit www.rage-designs.co.uk For details on entering the Roland Hero Awards, please visit www.rolandhero.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Am I A Bad Father?

Jonathan asked his young son, “Greg, do you think I’m a bad father?” “My name is Andrew,” replied his son.

That’s How He Reads

Patrons at the zoo were astonished to see an old man jump over the bars of the lions cage. Seemingly oblivious to the danger, he walked among the fierce creatures holding the latest bestselling book in his hands, intently perusing its contents. The spectators were beside themselves. “What in the world is he doing?” shouted one. “Is he crazy? He’s going to get killed!” yelled another. “Don’t worry about him,” replied the man’s son. “That’s just my dad. He likes to read between the lions.”

Perfic Joke

Why are perforations on a piece of paper a bad idea? Because they’re just tear able!

Van Gogh Family

Vincent Van Gogh had a really large family. Here’s a listing of some of the lesser known relatives: The really obnoxious brother — Please Gogh The brother who ate prunes — Gotta Gogh His dizzy aunt — Verti Gogh An aunt who taught positive thinking — Wayto Gogh And his magician uncle — Wherediddy Gogh

Conference Games

During a conference, I was pleasantly surprised to be seated next to a very handsome man. We flirted casually through dinner, then grew restless as the dignitaries gave speeches. During one particularly long-winded lecture, my new friend drew a # sign on a cocktail napkin. Elated, I wrote down my phone number. Looking startled for a moment, he drew another # sign, this time adding an X to the upper-left-hand corner.

Big deal

Marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning, all you need is two hearts and a diamond. By the end, you wish you had a club and a spade!

Artistic View

My mother-in-law is like a fine French Impressionist painting... She’s very lovely but is best appreciated at a distance.

Lost My Key Again

Wife: “I lost my key again.” Husband: “It’s in your jeans.” Wife: “Don’t drag my family into this!”

Food for Thought

Smoking will kill you. Bacon will kill you. But smoking bacon will cure it!

Falling Out

This sailor fell off the crows nest on a sailing ship and fell through the first deck and the second deck of the ship. The captain went up to the sailor and asked if he was all right. “I am all right,” said the sailor. “I have been through hardships before.”

It’s a matter of height

Lady (to her doctor): “What l am worried about is my height and not my weight.” Doctor: “How come?” Lady: “According to my weight, my height should be 7 feet, 8 inches.”

Guy On the Train

The guy sat next to me on the train pulled out a photo of his wife and said, “She’s beautiful, isn’t she?” I said, “If you think she’s beautiful, you should see my girlfriend mate!” He said, “Why? Is she a stunner?” I said, “No, she’s an optician!”

Past Joke

I was going to post a time-traveling joke... But you guys didn’t like it.

Married Men Live Longer

It’s not true that married men live longer than single men... It only seems longer!

Flowers Again

As he was standing in line at the grocery store checkout counter, a friend of John’s noticed he was purchasing a dozen roses and a card. “You in trouble with Jill?” the friend asked John. “Nope!” was John’s reply. “Preventive maintenance.”

Card Cover Up

A man entered a stationery shop and asked the assistant for a birthday/anniversary card. The clerk replied, “We have birthday cards and we have anniversary cards. Why not take one of each?” The man said, “You don’t understand. I need a card that covers both events! You see, we’re celebrating the fifth anniversary of my wife’s thirty-fourth birthday.”

Dumb and Dumber

My family was playing a trivia board game one night. When it was my brother-in-law’s turn, he rolled the dice and landed on “Science and Nature.” His question was, “If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?” He thought for a moment and then asked, “Is it on or off?”

I Am Not Allowed, House Rules

Patient: Doctor, doctor, I keep thinking I’m a dog. Doctor: Lie down on the couch and I’ll examine you. Patient: I can’t, I’m not allowed on the furniture.

Who’s the Boss?

A guy is doing some handyman work at a house. Across the room is a large grey parrot on a perch. The family dog comes into the room and jumps up on the couch. The parrot says, “Get off the couch!” and the dog jumps down immediately. A small child comes into the room with toys and the parrot says, “Go to your room!” and the child picks up his toys and leaves without hesitation. The guy turns to the parrot and says, “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” The parrot looks at the guy and says, “Get back to work!”

The Doctor Needs A Spanner

A woman with a minor injury was at the hospital because her doctor said she wanted to take a closer look at it to make sure everything was all right. The woman’s husband sits patiently in the waiting room. After a few minutes, the doctor comes out and asks her assistant for spanner, which understandably concerns the husband. Then, after a couple more moments, the doctor re-enters the room, this time asking for a screwdriver. The husband grows worried and begins to pace in circles. Then, a little later, the doctor bursts through the doors screaming for a hammer and at that, the husband, in a state of frenzied fear, runs up and asks, “Doctor, what the heck is wrong with my wife?” “I don’t know,” replies the flustered doctor, “I can’t get my bag open!”

Fate Bought Me Those Shoes

A woman had bought lots of shoes over time and she decided it was time to kick the habit. She really took it seriously, even changing her driving route to avoid her favourite shoe shop. One evening, however, she arrived home carrying a shoebox. Her husband grinned at her, but it didn’t faze her at all. “These are very special shoes,” she explained. “I accidentally drove by the shoe shop and there in the window were the most perfect shoes I’ve ever seen! I felt this was no accident, so I thought I’d let fate decide. If I could get a parking spot directly in front of the shop, the shoes were meant for me. And sure enough, the eighth time around the block, there it was!”

What’s Wrong With Me?

A man told his doctor that he wasn’t able to do all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, “Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me.” “Well, in plain English,” the doctor replied, “you’re just lazy.” “Okay,” said the man. “Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife.”

The Fast ‘S’ Car

Two snails went to an auto race. There were twenty-six cars, so instead of numbers the cars were identified by letters from A to Z. As the race started, the ‘S’ car quickly sped away from the trailing pack of cars. Seeing this, the one snail said to the other, “Hey, look at that ‘S’ car go!”

She Becomes Historical

“But doctor,” lamented the young husband in counselling, “whenever Sue and I quarrel, she becomes historical.” “You mean, hysterical,” said the doctor. “No, historical. She starts digging up my past.”

Owed Money

A man went to his solicitor and asked him, “My neighbour owes me £500 and he won’t pay up. What should I do?” “Do you have any proof he owes you the money?” asked the solicitor. “Nope,” replied the man. “Okay, then write him a letter asking him for the £5,000 he owes

you,” said the solicitor. “But its only £500,” replied the man. “Precisely. That’s what he will reply and then you’ll have your proof!”

Fishing on the Job

A copier salesman, living in Plymouth, loves ocean fishing and decided to take his boat out for the day. That morning, he was drifting about ten miles offshore and received a business call on his mobile phone. Suddenly, his rod bent double and the reel screamed as line poured off the spool. This salesman was master of the situation.

“Pardon me,” he told his customer calmly. “I have a call on another line.”

Eye Glass Confessions

As the three ladies picked up a menu, each put on a pair of glasses. “I really only need mine for close reading,” explained the first. Remarked the second, “I only use mine when the light is bad.” The third confessed, “I rarely wear mine — except when I want to see.”

Happy Dog

A man running a little behind schedule arrives at the cinema, goes in to watch the movie that

39

has already started, and as his eyes adjust to the darkness, he is surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead, intently watching the movie. It even seemed to be enjoying the movie: wagging its tail in the happy bits, drooping its ears at the sad bits, and hiding its eyes with its paws at the scary bits. After the movie, the man approaches the dog’s owner, “Wow, your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie. I’m amazed!” “Yes, I can’t believe it myself,” came the reply. “He hated the book.”
