So the other day, an esteemed reader labelled me ‘Sanguine’ when being caught in my usual position of talking print up. I thought the comparison was to an after match report from a new prem manager I hadn’t heard of yet, but no. I was once again guilty of promoting how wonderful our industry is and how without us most others couldn’t even function let alone market and grow. So sanguine by name and also by nature if it means being optimistic and positive in print, good. Bring it on. It’s showtime. I look forward to seeing you in the aisles Peter ‘Bullish’ Foulkes

Route1 orders three StitchLiner MarkIIIs Route1 Print has made a significant investment in fast turnaround short run production with the order of three Horizon StitchLiner MarkIIIs and a Horizon HT-1000V three knife trimmer from IFS. As part of an overall summer investment of £4m, the Rotherham trade printer will install the StitchLiners. They will be among the UK’s first delivery from Horizon in Japan. Route1 Print produces litho and digital print on B1 and B2 Heidelbergs and Xerox iGens. There are also two large format HP Scitexs. The new systems were chosen to help launch a 24-hour dispatch service and support fast turnaround, short run book production. Jack Wilmott, Route 1 Print Brand Manager explains: “We want to introduce a 24-hour service and to do that we needed to enhance our short run book production. We need it to be faster and to meet the demand for shorter run work. The operation will replace a Muller Martini with the three lines. They will run alongside an existing StitchLiner 5500. Jack said: “We made the decision in January about where this cycle of capital expenditure would go. We looked at all the options on the market but we like the StitchLiners. They are easy to run and fast to set up. Our operators know them well so will be able to run them very smoothly. He continues: “We are expecting to turnover £30m this year and we estimate that the new systems will increase our booklet making capacity by about 63%. They will give us more flexibility and streamline production now that everything is sheet work. We can get work on and off them much faster and that ensures quick and flexible production. The newly-launched next-generation StitchLiner builds on the hugely successful innovative StitchLiner series. Complete with servo drive technology, the system runs at a maximum speed of 6,000bph and up to 12,000bph with two-up production. It is also capable of producing A4

L- R Hideharu Hori (son of Horizon President Ejiro Hori), Route 1 Managing Director Adam Carnell and Production Director Jim Swain

landscape booklets at speeds of up to 5,300bph. Equipped with a new large 12.1” HD colour touch screen it offers enhanced operation with fully automated job set up in less than a minute making it 30% faster than the StitchLiner 5500. There is quicker and more precise knife movement and variable thickness production as standard with new Hohner 52/8S stitching heads. The Horizon HT-1000V will near line finish books that are produced on the Horizon BQ470 installed last year. Adds Jack: “When we put in the perfect binder it was much more productive than our old one. We were getting a bottleneck in that area. The HT-1000V will eliminate that and help to ensure we are much more efficient.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Antalis School of Thought Antalis was once again on hand to support this year’s Shine Media Awards by providing attending pupils with practical lessons in paper making. Now in their seventh year, the Shine Media Awards have been designed to recognise young creative talent by providing national recognition for pupils’ media and communications achievements. Each year, teachers of English, Art & Design and IT from across England and Wales are invited to submit their pupils’ design work, such as a school magazine, newspaper or newsletter, with the finalists invited to attend a glittering awards ceremony at the Stationers’ Hall, London. As a business committed to the next generation, Antalis has supported the event for the last six years in a bid to provide students with a hands-on understanding of the modern creative design industry and the opportunity it presents. At this year’s ceremony, Antalis was on hand with Arjowiggins creative papers to provide an expert paper-making class where pupils got to get their hands wet through the process of dowsing, blending and merging to create their own unique piece of paper. The business also

provided branded bags and gifts for the pupils to take away. Matthew Bottfield, corporate social responsibility manager at Antalis comments: “As a business committed to the next generation, we want to make a real difference in terms of helping to educate, inspire and showcase the full range of career

opportunities available. “It has therefore been a pleasure to support the Shine Media Awards once again. The paper making lesson proved very popular, enabling pupils to see how paper is made first hand while also learning about the importance of recycling in a way that really resonates. www.antalis.co.uk

Birtwells upgrades Collating

Japan Pulp & Paper acquires Premier Paper

Birtwells has reinvested in Horizon technology with the addition of three VAC 600H Collators from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS). The Accrington operation that delivers a nationwide trade print service runs a four colour Heidelberg SM524+LX Anicolor, a five colour Heidelberg SM52-5P SpeedMaster and two single colour Heidelberg GTOs as well as a Konica Minolta C7000 and Heidelberg Versafire. The new additions were a like for like replacement as managing director Nick Birtwell explains: “About 80% of our work is collating and NCR sets and 20% booklets. We have three collating towers on our bookletmaker and three stand alone towers. It was time to replace the stand-alone towers and it was an easy decision to invest in Horizon again.” He continues: “They are well built reliable towers and they suit us really well. They were quickly and easily installed. We have seen runs getting smaller and the easy to set up and operate collators enable us to complete the work more flexibly.” The collators are equipped with Horizon’s unique rotary suction feeders that operate effectively on a wide range of paper stocks. The VAC-600H towers, which can be placed in-line with Horizon bookletmaking systems, feature a high power double feed detect sensor and image checking system. The investment also included PJ75 Horizon Joggers for easy paper handling. www.ifsl.uk.com

Increased capacity for business continuity Business Continuity Ltd, which specialises in providing disaster recovery and business continuity solutions for the high volume print and mail industry, has installed an Océ ColorStream 3900 web supplied by Canon UK. A long term high volume Canon Océ customer based in Northampton, Business Continuity selected Canon, despite competitive pressures, because of its best in class service offering and partnership approach. The ColorStream platform will allow Business Continuity to transition from older colour web toner printer platforms, and better support high volume inkjet customers with a colour or mono print capability of over 50,000 duplex A4 sheets per hour. Business Continuity Managing Director, Mark Allan, said: “We have always valued our longstanding partnership with Canon. They have provided us with not only impressive engineering and technical support, but also general flexibility with capacity rates. With colour lasers typically only able to produce 80-150 A4 images per minute, having an

additional system that can produce 1,700 colour images per minute is a much needed capability for a high volume and security print provider.” Business Continuity has achieved outstanding results since installing the Océ ColorStream. Allan continued: “We needed to upgrade our capability in line with client requirements, and be able to respond quickly and efficiently to their needs. Following installation, Canon has allowed our colour capacity to increase from approximately 800,000 colour A4 prints per day to three million — this is a huge

milestone for us and we look forward to seeing our capabilities continue to grow using Canon printing systems.” Stuart Rising, Canon UK’s Head of Commercial Print said: “From a production perspective, it’s great to see that Business Continuity is satisfied with the installation of the Océ ColorStream. It is our pleasure to provide the company with equipment that meets the increasing demands from its customers and provides high quality printing at scale, and we are excited to continue our partnership.” www.canon.co.uk

Slam Signs invests in 10-colour Epson SureColor To boost the capacity and variety of signage products it produces, Slam Signs has invested in a 64-inch Epson SureColor SC-S80600 large format printer. The new printer, supplied by Papergraphics, joins a SureColor SCS40600 which was installed two years ago. Based in St Albans, Slam Signs is headed up by business partners David Jorge and Jodie Banfather. The company provides a complete design and print service, producing a variety of products including vehicle wraps, shop fascias and signage, window graphics, banners, POS and pop-up displays. The company’s new SureColor SC-S80600 features permanent Epson PrecisionCore TFP printheads with variable size ink droplet technology to deliver up to 1440 x 1440 dpi output. It enables Slam Signs to print on a variety of substrates including clear film, vinyl, canvas and photographic paper. “In my view, the SureColor SC-S80600 is probably the best printer on the market today in terms of quality, versatility and engineering,” says David. “The 10-colour UltraChrome GS3 inkset, including metallic, red and white, means we can achieve accurate and consistent colours and hit the majority of Pantone colours. We don’t need to produce test prints to check colours – they are always spot on which saves us and our customers considerable time. The

special red ink really delivers a bright, punchy effect which designers and ad. agencies love.” Alongside its wide variety of signage products, Slam has developed a reputation for its vehicle graphics service. “On average, we wrap about two vehicles a week and the

SC-S80600 is the perfect printer for this because of the stunning quality graphics that it produces,” says David. “Vehicle wraps protect body work and are used for advertising and to create fun effects. We have some customers who will re-wrap their car a couple of times a year! While the graphics are long lasting, they like to have a bit of fun.” “The design and build of this printer is impressive,” says David. “Installation and set-up was quick and simple and since then, because it is so reliable, it has been in almost constant use. Wallpaper and wall coverings are growing in popularity as retailers, designers and events firms see the potential and the quality of the results,” he explains. “The advanced autotension control system on the SC-S 80600 prevents substrate stretch and means that we can print drops that align with each other perfectly. That’s very important.” Phil McMullin, sales manager, Professional Printing Solutions, Epson UK, says: “Slam Sign’s experience with their new printer shows why it has become Europe’s top selling ecosolvent technology in its class. It is a powerful solution for companies looking for technology that delivers quality, productivity, flexibility, ease of use and rapid ROI in one complete package.” www.epson-europe.com

Epson’s two ‘Outstanding use of print in textiles’ Epson, announced the two winners of its new designers ‘Outstanding Use of Print in Textiles’ prize, awarded on the first day of the prestigious annual two-week New Designers Exhibition, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London. First prize went to Molly-Mae Brissett-Haigh, a graduate from the Textile Design facility at the University of Edinburgh for her highly innovative ‘Blessing in Disguise’ fashion collection, with Glasgow School of Art graduate, Lucy Hope, also taking away the award for her ‘Happi’ fashionwear for children and adults, inspired by a unique blending of play, imagination, creativity and colour. Says Heather Kendle, market development manager, Epson Europe: “The standard of textile design at this year’s New Designers Exhibition was breathtaking. There was an incredible range of styles, designs and innovations on show, all proving that digital print and dye sublimation printing has opened up such a wide range of possibilities for those fashion and décor designers wishing to push the boundaries of what is possible in print. Finding just two winners was a challenging task, but the judging panel all felt both MollyMae and Lucy really stood out as they had each, in their own diverse way, designed highly creative, inspiring and intelligent fashion collections with great stories behind them.” As part of the awards package, both winners will now be invited to participate in an Epson design project, creating a collection of interior décor or fashion designs using dye sublimation printing, which will then be showcased on an Epson stand at a trade exhibition over the next 12 months. Molly-Mae Brissett-Haigh and Lucy Hope will present their initial concepts to the Epson team in the UK and work them up into finished designs, with each winner then taken to Epson Europe’s design, demonstration and production

facility in Paris, where they will spend two days printing the output. Each designer will also have the opportunity to use up to 20 metres of materials from this visit for their own use. Says Molly-Mae Brissett-Haigh: “The New Designers Exhibition was a fantastic showcase for my work and I am very grateful to have been chosen as a winner of the award. The opportunity to work with a brand like Epson on a live project will be an invaluable experience, especially as my next step is to start seeking employment within the design sector. It will give me great wide ranging experience in industrial printing and manufacturing processes, something I know will aid me and my future in the industry.”

New Designers Exhibition, a mix of large/small scale floral arrangements and parterre flourishes, were not full garments but gave an illusion of dresses, skirts and tops, which when worn, moved and showed the ‘blessing in disguise’. The samples ranged from dark to light, with the gradients also a nod to those used by the Dutch Mastershelping to represent the journey moving from inside to out.

Happi fashion collection by Lucy Hope

‘Blessing in Disguise’ fashion collection by Molly-Mae Brissett-Haigh

The idiom, ‘a blessing in disguise’ was the initial inspiration, with the fashion collection then created as a visual representation of the idiom. Research into the history of the idiom led MollyMae to the Rev. James Hervey’s publication, ‘Reflections on a Flower Garden: In a Letter to a Lady’ (1746) which is credited as the first time the phrase was put into print. His over the top descriptions of flowers, nature and religious connotations also reminded Molly-Mae of the Dutch Masters, whose influences are also seen in the designs. Molly-Mae used various pleating methods, smocking and gathering to hide and reveal prints. They are digitally printed and engineered to be manipulated and contrasted within one piece of fabric. The samples on show at the

Happi is a collection promoting the importance of imagination through creativity and play for children and adults. The inspiration behind the project was the fascination Lucy has with how children communicate through imagination, unintimidated by the self-conscious restrictions of society. Researching the Scandinavian education system; where children start school at the age of seven, and focusing their early years on play, Lucy created a collection aimed at encouraging both children and adults to maintain their playfulness, creativity and fun. Concludes Heather Kendle: “My time at the New Designers Exhibition confirmed to me that the UK continues to be one of the global centres of edgy, innovative and groundbreaking fashion and decor design. It’s clear this next generation of UK designers are not happy just to rest on the reputation of those who have come before them, but want to carve out their own reputation, one based on challenging convention and developing new dimensions in textile design. At Epson, we are very proud to play our part in moving this industry forward and excited to be working with Molly-Mae and Lucy Hope - two inspiring designers that signal a bright future for this industry.” www.epson.co.uk

Xerox new Baltoro HF inkjet press Xerox has introduced the Xerox Baltoro™ HF Inkjet Press, a cut sheet production press that enables clients to print high volume, transactional work and high quality direct mail and catalogues on a single press with superior image quality and productivity. The Baltoro HF is Xerox’s first product using this platform. “We engineered the Baltoro HF by leveraging the best of our iGen® and High Fusion inkjet technologies. The result is a breakthrough platform that expands into the commercial print environment and supports high quality production with economics similar to offset printing,” said Tracey Koziol, senior vice president of Global Offerings, Xerox. “Designing and manufacturing the Baltoro HF from the frame to the engine gives us a greater ability to continuously advance the platform at a faster clip.” With innovation at its core, the Baltoro HF is the only press in

the entry level class to use automated intelligence to optimise and maintain colour and image quality as well as self-correct in real time. The press’ automated intelligence, along with its High Fusion ink and Xerox High Fusion W-Series Inkjet Heads, delivers true high definition 1200 x 1200 dpi image quality without the need to condition media with priming solutions or pre-coats. Eliminating the priming solution reduces press size, power consumption and total cost of ownership while increasing productivity. The Baltoro HF also offers additional time saving advantages. Its speed, paired with having the widest print area in its class, enables the press to increase client productivity by more than 115 percent. On the front end, Xerox FreeFlow® Core automates the time consuming prepress work, while Xerox FreeFlow Print Server allows clients to add new jobs while the press is running. Epson Surecolor SC-F6300 dye-sub printer Building on the success of its predecessor, the SureColor SC-F6200, Epson has announced the new SC-F6300, 44 inch, dye-sublimation printer. Having been developed for textile producers, photographic studios and promotional goods businesses, the SC-F6300 offers improved user productivity and reduced downtime. This is achieved through simple installation, easy user maintenance and a complementary suite of bundled software that allows users to better manage their printing efficiency. Phil McMullin, sales manager, Epson UK, says: “Epson’s printer heritage speaks for itself and we’re delighted to offer users the complete end to end production package, for their peace of mind and convenience. We’ve also made sure that installation and maintenance is simple; so simple, that no specialist knowledge, or tools, are required. We’re confident that we’ve designed a dye-sublimation printer that will keep businesses running at peak efficiency and requires little user intervention.” The SC-F6300 bundled software includes: Epson Edge Print RIP, Epson Edge Dashboard Support (including EMX profiles), and Epson’s LFP Accounting Tool. These provide the most appropriate level of software support to help businesses run even more efficiently, and better analyse costing and profitability. All new features and enhancements are there to reduce users’ TCO. Easy user access and printhead maintenance, minimise the need to call an engineer. The out of the box, easy start-up from delivery, gets businesses up and running as

quickly as possible. The optional Epson branded take-up reel offers more control of takeup quality. The improved specification of key parts increases the product life and ROI. Whether you’re producing sports tops, lightweight fashion items, promotional gifts, mugs, mouse mats, key fobs or phone covers, The SureColor SC-F6300 has been designed to play a crucial part in the seamless delivery of a total, end to end colour printing solution. One manufacturer — one complete dye-sublimation package. www.epson.co.uk

Mimaki emphasises accessibility of textile printing Mimaki demonstrated a brand new hybrid digital textile printer from the TX300P series at ITMA 2019. Uniquely featuring both direct to textile and transfer print capabilities, the new printer achieves unparalleled flexibility in ink combinations and substrates — opening new profitable opportunities for businesses. The new printer is an evolution of the Mimaki TX300P-1800, with the added capability of printing onto transfer paper. Crucially, print service providers will benefit from enhanced versatility in terms of fabrics, applications and targeted markets. This affords smaller print service providers with an opportunity to provide a full range of textile printing applications with just one system. Aligned with Mimaki’s Total Solution Provider approach, the printer is compatible with Mimaki’s full range of pre-treating, steaming and washing equipment. “The textile market is still relatively early on in the adoption of digital printers, with most textiles being printed in the conventional way and a lot of large players dominating the market. With this new hybrid printer, Mimaki has provided an affordable solution that lowers the barriers to entry for smaller print providers,” says Ronald van den Broek, General Manager Sales EMEA. “For larger volume production houses, the printer is valuable for smaller runs and the myriad benefits digital production provides.” Interchangeable platens enable the hybrid nature of the printer. When printing direct to textile, excess ink that penetrates through the fabric is drained by a platen with an ink receiving ditch. This can quickly be swapped out for a vacuum platen, suitable for printing onto heat transfer paper. The printer can also be configured with three different ink combinations, comprising textile pigment/direct sublimation or textile pigment/sublimation transfer or direct sublimation/sublimation transfer.

This means more versatility and more possibilities, making it an ideal entry model. Reliable productivity is assured with Mimaki Core Technology including a Nozzle Check Unit and Nozzle Recovery System. This enables the printer to automatically clean print heads when nozzles malfunction, and when nozzles are not repairable, switch any missing or damaged nozzles with working nozzles without stopping production and without affecting final print quality. An adjustable head gap also means the distance from print head to substrate can be changed preventing print heads from touching the material. Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd and for more details of Mimaki’s range of print solutions, visit www.hybridservices.co.uk

Antalis announces Coala Textiles Antalis has launched new Coala Textiles, a range of coated polyester printable textiles for signage and decoration. An addition to the Coala range of large format digital media, the introduction of textile products comes in response to the increasing trend for bespoke and personalised signage and decoration in commercial and residential environments. The products have been selected for their versatility and as a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional PVC materials. The range includes products suitable for a large variety of applications, including signage that is frontlit, backlit, blockout, stretch and flag; and for specialist decoration like wallcovering, acoustic dampening and indoor and outdoor sunshades. All of the products are tactile, lightweight, versatile, easy to install and to clean, and are fire rated. Coala Textiles complement the existing Coala Walldesign range of wallpapers. The complete portfolio has been developed to enable large format specialists, and commercial printers looking to diversify their offering, to capitalise on the growing opportunities presented by the interior design market. Highlights from the 100% polyester Coala Textiles collection include Coala Textile Backlit City which has a very tight structure making it ideal for backlit or frontlit graphics. It produces flawless high quality images when rear-illuminated. Coala Textile Stretch offers ideal opacity and stretch for architectural and geometric applications. Finally, Coala Textile Sound Touch is a sound absorbing semi-sheer fabric, particularly interesting for use within public buildings and workplaces. Mike Collins, Visual Communication Product Manager Antalis, comments: “The trend to create bespoke, personalised interiors within both commercial and residential markets continues to grow. Antalis has developed the best possible range of textile media that will provide our customers with both the scope and quality they need to tap into the interior design market.” www.antalis.co.uk

Creating a vacuum! TheMagicTouch continue to innovate and develop applications that turn ideas into profit. With the current global crusade to banish and replace all single use plastic bottles from our daily lives the company offer their unique image transfer process to decorate and personalise the latest global craze of vacuum bottles. Using the latest in white toner technology together with the established CPM transfer paper full colour designs can be applied using a traditional mug press. The process unlike sublimation is able to register white and therefore full colour imaging is possible on any colour bottle. These increasingly popular products can now be decorated with the added marketing advantage of a minimum of one, making them considerably easier to sell and market to target customers. The unique bottle style design incorporates an insulated food grade stainless steel layer with an insulated liner that enables the bottle to keep both hot drinks “hot” and cold drinks “cold” for up to 12 hours. The bottles themselves are available from all the major trade promotional suppliers, online suppliers and even high street retailers in the UK such as Wilko. The bottles are easy to clean, rust proof and leak proof with a wide drip free mouth opening. The average cost for the full colour decoration is less than 25p per bottle and takes less than two minutes to produce. The company also offer a range of coloured enamel mugs printed using the same CPM process with the same traditional mug press.

Jim Nicol, Managing Director commented, “These products make real sense and will be part of our lives for many, many years to come. Until now the choice of technology available to decorate different colour mugs and drinks bottles has been restricted either to traditional screen/pad printing or more recently using UV printers. However, what we offer is an affordable, quick and very durable solution assisting customers to increase the range of products possible using the TMT/OKI white toner technology. sales@themagictouch.co.uk

Inca Digital launch Onset X HS range

British inkjet pioneer, Inca Digital, has announced the introduction of a powerful new addition to its leading Onset X UV flatbed series — the Onset X HS (High Speed) range. Featuring two new machines, the Onset X2 HS and the Onset X3 HS, the new range offers a dramatic increase in speed and productivity — now printing up to 1450m2/hr, utilising a new single cycle mode. Compatible with Inca Digital’s range of application specific robotic handling systems, and incorporating ‘30 second’ job set up and ‘single cycle’ printing mode, the new HS range is set to deliver another ‘step change’ in inkjet printing — something Inca Digital has become renowned for. The Onset X HS launch is partnered with a new Fujifilm inkjet range, Uvijet OX. Uvijet OX features a brand new, unique, patented ink technology developed and manufactured at Fujifilm Speciality Ink systems in the UK, designed specifically for the Onset X HS family of printers to achieve exceptional adhesion on rigid plastic media at the highest speeds. Says Stephen Tunnicliffe-Wilson, CEO, Inca Digital: “We believe the launch of this new generation of Onset X machines positions Inca Digital firmly at the forefront of the high-end inkjet market. Inca Digital has always been focused on pushing the boundaries of what is possible in print. The dramatic increases in overall productivity, made possible by the further integration of robotics and great advances in printing speeds, print quality and substrate compatibility, all mean print businesses and entrepreneurs have the capability and capacity to grow market share and confidently move into new markets.” Increased productivity — The addition of the new ‘single cycle’ print mode to the Onset X HS, made possible by the optimisation of the print jetting profiles and jetting frequencies, means the new HS range can print at speeds up to 1450m2 per hour — more than 50 per cent higher than previously published throughput figures. The intelligent bonding properties of the new Uvijet OX ink also ensure maximum adhesion to a much wider range of media, even at these new highest printing speeds. ‘30 second’ job set up — Machine downtime caused by job changes and set up routines has also been dramatically reduced with the integration of a range of new automated features on the HS machines. On and off loading systems, UV shutter alignment and table skin adjustments have all been automated, reducing operator intervention and bringing job set up time down from an average of 15 minutes to around 30 seconds. Inca Digital’s own research in the field suggests this will substantially increase machine capacity and utilisation in “real world” situations. New inks mean new levels of versatility and new markets — The Onset X’s scalable architecture and multi-substrate printing capability has helped to make it the machine of choice of many print businesses for

whom maximum productivity and flexibility are key. The new Onset X HS, combined with the robust adhesion qualities of Fujifilm’s Uvijet OX ink, further builds on this reputation. Together, the Onset X HS and Uvijet OX inks open up an extensive new range of applications and possibilities in markets where the demand is growing for shorter run but the highest quality printing on corrugated board, packaging and non-PVC rigid plastics. Concludes Mr TunnicliffeWilson: “We are very proud of this new range of Onset X HS machines. They are the latest example of Inca Digital’s proud tradition of launching inkjet machines that have a transformative effect on the industry. To secure such a significant increase in the headline speeds and overall productivity of the Onset X series is an outstanding achievement. Credit must go to the R&D teams at Inca Digital and our partner, Fujifilm, both of whom have worked hard to bring together an integrated solution that puts us once again right at the front of inkjet innovation. “We all know the market is constantly evolving, and print businesses need to ensure that they have printing technology that not only fits today’s needs, but gives them the ability to respond with speed and agility to tomorrow’s challenges. I believe the Onset X HS range gives these companies the speed, productivity, quality and flexibility to take on these challenges and opportunities with confidence.” The new Onset X HS series is available now and sold exclusively on a global basis by Fujifilm. www.incadigital.com

PIXEL PROPHET

ALL THINGS MUST PASS These things too will pass away. This was the wisdom provided to a Persian King when he tasked his wise men with giving him an answer he could use that would always be true. We all have to come to terms with the fact that nothing lasts forever, even if we hope for a little extension in execution. Much later the more cynical view of Benjamin Franklin was that the only certainties in life are death and taxes. Martin Christie scribes…

[O]

f course, in the days of the Persian Empire, it would be fair to say social change and technology progressed rather slowly and had very little impact on the average citizen whose life, not being royalty, was likely to be harsh and short. These days not only do all things move at a much faster pace, but as we generally live longer, we are more likely to be affected by it, and at times struggle to adapt to it. We can all draw on numerous examples but an interesting one just popped up on the morning news regarding the long drawn out debacle over HS2, the proposed high speed link for train services from London to the north. By the time you read this the debate may have been resolved over massive escalating costs, and dubious long term benefits. But at the heart of the issue, as one observer has just pointed out, is that the scheme was conceived when saving journey time seemed to be a priority. Ten years ago it was assumed that an extra half an hour on a train was wasted time. That was before we all went mobile and carriages were equipped with WiFi and charging points so that passengers could continue to work on their tablets and laptops, and it didn’t matter if you were going to be late for a meeting because you could start the discussion on line. So facts that seemed to be taken as certainties turn out to be false assumptions as the future renders them redundant. These things too... The fragility of accepted knowledge has never been so starkly put into focus than by the pace of modern digital developments in all forms of socalled intelligent devices. The speed of change in the technology has forced a radical rethink in the way we work and interact socially, or at least it has for most of us. Working in print of demand we have had no choice but to adapt to the new ways we talk with customers, and exchange information. And it works both ways because it has changed the way they react with us very much influenced by the immediate but often more impersonal

nature of the transaction. And of course there is the other issue in that just because we have had to adapt to change, it doesn’t mean that all our customers have to. It may come as a shock to younger readers for whom a mobile phone is an essential life support unit, but there are sentient beings who can survive quite happily without constantly checking their email or social media updates. And they are not all those rapidly approaching pensionable age. Back in the last century we often communicated by a thing called a letter which involved a note, often handwritten without the help of predictive text, explaining exactly what we wanted, and put it in the care of a skilled operative called a postman who would deliver it safely, and accepting that it would likely take several days to get a reply by the same system. A primitive arrangement by today’s standards, but it worked, and people would commonly sit down to read and understand the whole of it, not just swipe through bits they thought might be important. In a twenty-first century world, where people demand immediate attention regardless of whether it’s really important or just a liking of a picture of their cat doing something stupid, it’s often difficult to sort through the fog of electronic information overload to get to anything that really matters. Which is why things that matter get missed, or just misunderstood. There’s enough room for confusion in any form of communication without adding all the variables that digital data opens up. When you had to write, you physically formed the word which gave you at least a chance to cross it out or change your mind. The speed and convenience of letting a machine do the thinking for you is potentially flawed as it might check the spelling but not common sense. So you have customers who use the technology, and use it badly, and others who simply refuse to deal with it at all. The latter is actually quite understandable as digital

information is such a temporary disposable item. Those who lived before it took over appreciate the value of solid things in the real world, like print. Even that will fade and fall apart in time. But digital files, and images, are particularly prone to degradation and loss — something that few people seem to realise when they carry so much that is important to them on a device no larger than the palm of a hand. These things too may pass away much quicker! Paper of course has a history going back hundreds of years, and film over a hundred and fifty. Compared to that, the basic JPG is a spawning infant. There will no doubt be a solution to preserving pixels long term, perhaps transferring to a different media as we now transfer old analogue tapes to digital. But even after more than a century the total amount of film ever shot has probably already been overtaken by the billions of instant snaps taken at random on phones and other mobile devices. Choosing what to preserve for history may be a bit of a challenge. Digital information, unlike full-sized hard copy, also has an Achilles heel in how it actually stores the actual details of a file, colour, resolution etc. The most common file types in use, JPGs and PDFs are compression files to make them easier to transfer by email or upload to and from web sites. They save space by reducing the amount of information they contain. This may not be a problem at first use but over time continued opening and saving may do untold damage. The long term prospects for digital archives are of course yet to be discovered because no one has a 50-year-old JPG. When I started shooting digital, some 20 years ago, I used JPG exclusively because, like a lot of photographers new to the format, I didn’t know any better. And in any case the digital cameras available were fairly basic in performance compared to the models of today so we accepted the quality we had in hand, not only in capture, but in processing. number five. That would be an old three-wheeler Reliant compared to a modern hybrid hatchback alongside the current Creative Cloud offering. That meant that not only were file formats very basic, so were the editing possibilities. Gradually we became aware of this mysterious format called RAW, which is a curious halfway house between a processed and unprocessed image. It’s still subject to the capture settings on the camera but not relying on the devices processor to determine the output, so that a huge amount of manipulation is possible at leisure on the computer screen. With film, once you’d developed the negative and fixed it that was it. You could do a certain amount in the darkroom afterwards, but if it was badly over or under exposed in the first place, you could never recover it. Quite a lot of cameras are now able to shoot RAW, although most of their owners may not be aware of it or how to use it properly. Manufacturers however have realised that it is the best way we have with present knowledge to preserve an original image for future use. RAW is the thing that separates an amateur from a more professional user, so if you have a photographer trying to baffle you with jargon and he’s not using RAW at source, you can draw your own conclusions. I started shooting RAW over ten years ago,

vivid-online.com

and most importantly saving the RAW files in an archive folder, almost like unexposed rolls of film, and then working on editing JPGs or TIFFs, so the original was still there as back up. This is made easier by using Lightroom as it can automatically save an original copy, rather than having to remember to do it, or risk overwriting. I probably didn’t think of it at the time but the long-term benefit of saving the original camera files means that I can now go back and revisit folders I’d long forgotten and using the very latest tools in photo editing rather than those I was using back then. The point being that not only has Photoshop, as well as other editing programs, improved but so have my humble editing skills. The one goes with the other. The neat thing with RAW processing is that it is now available for all image files, even though it is hidden in the Filter options in Photoshop and a lot of users haven’t discovered it or its usefulness. In Lightroom the same tools are directly available in the Develop module. The one thing to be aware of is that in Photoshop RAW editing options will be directly applied to the file unless you make a duplicate copy first and apply to that. In Lightroom, as it is a non-destructive program, changes will only apply when the original is exported as another file. I was able to use this magic on a job than crossed the media as well as generations working on some colour transparencies taken on

12 incredible print effects using the

travels in the Middle East during the 1960s. A transparency, sometimes called a positive slide, is the actual film from the camera, no copy, no print, just processed in chemicals that react to the different colours and reproduce them directly. Like anything exposed to light and the atmosphere, these can fade in time, especially if the processing wasn’t perfect, and several of these were suffering from age and typically loss of colour. These are medium format size, much larger than standard 35mm film, so there is a lot of detail in the image, but the photographer would only have had twelve shots on the roll, so the results would be quite precious, and worth spending a bit of time on restoration. Although the original looks very washed out fortunately there was enough colour information still available to exploit the accuracy of a dedicated film scanner, and then the resources of the Adobe Camera Raw filter to pull back the scene to how it probably looked all those years ago. This is not adding colour, as so many black and white films have been doctored, but enhancing colour that is already there because you are able to work on the hue of individual pixels rather than paint over them with a brush. The result may not be a completely authentic view of one summer day in the Lebanon, but enough to delight a very happy old photographer and restore some priceless memories.

SHOW PREVIEW

THE PRINT SHOW HIGH PROFILE SPEAKERS Organisers of The Print Show have revealed the full list of speakers for this year’s seminar programme, with highlights including Q&A sessions with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Chris Eubank and Gregg Wallace.

[T]

he speaker programme will run in line with the event’s main ethos of helping visitors access the tools and information they need to remain competitive in the modern print market. All sessions on the programme will be focused around the key talking points in the UK print market, covering issues such as the development of digital print and the importance of operating a suitable business, as well as the opportunities for growth in the exciting 3D print market. Sessions will be split between the Business Seminar Theatre, a key feature of the show for the past five years, and a dedicated celebrity area where the three famous faces will also meet with visitors for photographs and a free book signing session. “We’re delighted to have such a high calibre of speakers at the show this year,” event director Chris Davies said. “Visitors will hear from the leading voices in the print and related sectors about how they can improve their business and expand into new and profitable markets. “Throw in that we have three special celebrity speakers this year to talk about their own achievements in life, and The Print Show 2019 is shaping up to be an inspirational event for all attendees.”

Diversified speaker programme

Day one kicks off in style with Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE taking to the stage to discuss his remarkable life story and many incredible achievements. Up next is Frazer Chesterman, the co-founder of the FM Future Consultancy and a former director at FESPA, to look at the future of digital print. Maryam Qureshi of HP will then look at the opportunities in the 3D print market and how print service providers can access this exciting market, before Marcus Timson — also co-founder of the FM Future Consultancy — hosts a panel session on the importance of sustainability, with input from members such as Epson’s Phil McMullin and Brendan Perring of the IPIA. Later on day one, Tara Pickles will look at JICMAIL, the media metric for mail, before Rachel Hembery of FSC UK discusses the benefits of the FSC system and how this can help print companies improve their green image. On day two, Nick Devine, AKA The Print Coach, will look at selling print in the age of the internet, before returning later in the day to look at how to increase sales and margins in just 90 days. Sandwiched in between The Print Coach — no pun intended — is the second of The Print Show’s celebrity speakers in celebrity chef and television personality Gregg Wallace. In this session, Wallace will speak about how he made his way from the Covent Garden Fruit and Veg Market to presenting Masterchef on the BBC. Guy Martin from Epson UK will then look at the adoption of inkjet technology in the print industry, before a panel session examines the innovative new PVC Banner Recycling Scheme from Soyang Europe and Blue Castle Group. For the final day, Tim Bond from the DMA will look at consumer

engagement and how brands can use print to interact with customers, before boxing legend Chris Eubank takes to the stage to talk about some of his greatest achievements in the sporting world. Next, Paul Holohan, founder and chief executive, Richmond Capital Partners, will lead an interesting session on mergers and acquisitions, before Marian Stefani, chief executive of the IPIA, ends the 2019 speaker programme with a session on how and why the print industry needs to educate and reach out to buyers. Epson to showcase wide range of new products

Epson will use The Print Show to reaffirm its commitment to the UK quick print, signage, textile, label, technical, photographic and dyesublimation printing sectors. This year — its fifth consecutive year at the show — the company will be featuring the broadest range of signage, photo, fabric, label and technical printers it has ever shown at a UK print exhibition, including showcasing new models in its perennially popular eco-solvent SureColor S Series, many of which will be making their UK show debut, following their launch earlier this year. Says Phil McMullin, sales manager, ProGraphics, Epson UK: “As an exhibition dedicated to the UK printing industry, The Print Show is a key milestone in our product marketing calendar. This will be our fifth year exhibiting and the fact it will be our largest stand yet, featuring more products than ever before, is a testament to the power of the show and the success we have had there over the past few years.” Products on show at this year’s Print Show include: Three new highly versatile signage, graphics, décor and textile printers: the SureColor SCS80600 bulk ink; SureColor SC-S60600 EcoTex and the SureColor SCS60600 bulk ink, all launched at FESPA 2019; The new Epson 36 inch T5400M integrated printer and scanner, offering a fast multifunction solution for the printing, sharing and saving of technical documents; The

The show provides us with an outstanding platform to showcase our range of products and our vision for the future for the UK printing industry and we are looking forward to another highly successful event”, concludes Phil McMullin. www.epson.co.uk

Ashgate Automation booked in

Printers who are looking for an affordable system for the production of digitally printed A4 landscape booklets should look no further than the Ashgate stand where they will be demonstrating the KAS KF640 bookletmaking system, the first of its type on the market to produce a maximum booklet size of 320mm x 320mm and more common sizes like A4 landscape and 12” x 12”. “At under £16,000 for the bookletmaker and trimmer and sub £22,000 with our in-line square fold unit, it really punches above its weight,” said Lewis Price, MD, Ashgate. It operates at 1000 books an hour and will handle a maximum sheet size of 640mm x 320mm, which means that SRA2 sheets will not require pre-trimming of the short edge on a guillotine prior to producing A4booklets. It can be fitted with an optional squarefold in-line unit. Running at 1800 booklets an hour, it produces booklets with

September 2019

a square spine, which is becoming ever more popular with digital printers. For short to medium runs, the KF 640 is ideal because it is simple to set up, adjust and change from one size to another. With one machine you can finish booklets above and beyond A4 landscape and down to A6. Ashgate will be showcasing its Fastbind range of finishing solutions for binding digitally printed hard and soft cover documents to meet the demand for short runs up to 500 books a day. A highlight will be the Fastbind PUREVA XT, which marks a milestone in perfect binding, offering a choice of EVA hot melt or PUR glue on one table top machine. Fast and easy, you can bind soft and hard covers with confidence, using economical EVA hot melt glue for everyday jobs or PUR glue for those demanding applications. With traditional PUR machines, maintenance can be expensive and time consuming, making it hard to ensure a reliable finishing process in order to meet deadlines. PUREVA XT’s innovative glue mechanism is easily cleaned and changed, thanks to economical glue cartridges, making it possible to change from PUR to EVA in seconds. Also being demonstrated are the Fastbind EVA XT perfect binder with built-in PGO roughening unit, able to deal with difficult coated papers and the Fastbind FotoMount lay-flat book binding system. Alongside the popular Fastbind H46PRO for casemaking books and photo albums up to A3 formats, Ashgate will be demonstrating their latest model, the semiautomated Fastbind Casematic a46a casemaker. Lewis Price, Managing Director, Ashgate, said, “With all the features of Fastbind’s standard Casematic. The a46a takes casemaking to the next level with some new innovations, making it faster and more consistent.” The overall process remains the same but once the boards are laid down, the guides automatically rise up so that the boards float over the table, making it easier to move the cover on the table. Designed as an intermediate machine, it requires little skill to produce professional, high quality hard back books. For further information contact Lewis Price on 01865891904

seeks to spread the word about its digital textile print capabilities. The range comprises the HP Stitch S300 and HP Stitch S500 64” models, as well as the larger HP Stitch S1000 126” option. Each printer couples HP’s thermal inkjet technology with industry standard dyes for superior colour durability, and also features the first ever built-in spectrophotometer to enable fast and exact colour matching. Phil Oakley, regional business manager, large format printing at HP, comments: “The HP Stitch S series is a portfolio of digital textile printers that deliver precise colour matching, designed to boost growth via décor and apparel applications, as well as enabling on-demand production and personalisation. “Stitch represents HP’s entry into the dye-sublimation textile market, delivering the world’s fastest colour match capabilities.” Aside from the Stitch S series, HP will be showcasing its new HP DesignJet for the first time at a UK trade show, as well as its HP Latex technology, with a number of printer models to feature across the HP stand in Hall 9 of the NEC. HP will theme its stand around ‘Yes Unlimited’, with the idea of showcasing how its broad and versatile portfolio enables customers to say ‘Yes’ to any request, regardless of the schedule or applications. This follows on from last year when HP named its stand ‘Yesville’, encouraging visitors to seek out new markets. “Visitors will have access to a VIP tour of the stand to discover new soft signage, apparel, décor and large format capabilities for engineering, public sector and enterprise markets,” Oakley says. In addition, as a special bonus feature for The Print Show, HP will be running its own game show on its stand in the ‘HP Large Format Wheel of Fortune’. HP will be in excellent company at The Print Show 2019, with a number of other major brands, manufacturers and suppliers having signed up to exhibit. In recent weeks, the likes of Sakurai, Grafityp, CP Bourg/Terry Cooper Services, NeoPost, Merlin Transfers, Boxford, X-Press OnDemand, Automatic Letter Bender and Universal Adhesive Systems have all booked their stands for the event. Sakurai, which specialises in both offset and screen print presses, will be taking full advantage of the show’s wide reaching audience by displaying its MS-102 screen printing kit and LQM foiling solutions. For years, Sakurai screen technology has been used to overprint spot UV varnish onto offset printed sheets in B1 and B2 formats and the manufacturer has now added luxe-quality foil to the mix to offer “breathtaking options” for creativity with print embellishment. Mark Priest, UK sales manager for Sakurai, says screen printing — an

The manufacturer is one of several companies that have featured at each edition of The Print Show since the event launched in 2015, including the likes of Epson, Vivid Laminating Technologies, Route 1 Print and Axzyra. Speaking about the show, Morgana’s marketing manager, Wendy Baker, has said The Print Show has proved a valuable platform for the company over the past five years, explaining that the event has helped generate a number of new sales and valuable leads. “We’ve been at every Print Show since it started and it has always given us a very good return on our investment,” Baker said. “We have some new product launches around this time — so that just helped us make a final decision on what size of stand we took. “Sales are the main reason we go, and we always do take orders at these events. However, the new product introductions will be a major focus for us, and we will be inviting key partners and customers to the event to see the new kit.” “Although it’s tough for business owners to get time away from their office to see new things, with a show like this, you can get a lot packed into a one or two day visit and see many things at one site,” Baker said. “I think a day at an event like this can be very efficient if you organise it well.” Organisers have also announced a number of other exhibitors in recent weeks, including the likes of Smart Print, Nova Chrome, Blake Envelopes, YES Ltd, Tharstern and James Burn International. The Print Show 2019 will take place from September 17th to 19th at the NEC in Birmingham. FB8000 PROVIDES AFFORDABLE DIGITAL DIE CUTTING Many of us will have seen old Heidelberg Platen presses sat in the corner of a print shop, these have often been the only way for smaller commercial printers to cut and crease printed items from their digital presses without going out of house. For those printers without access to one of these old devices, jobs are sent out for cutting and long lead times can exist waiting for jobs to be returned. While the digital revolution turned all our litho printing presses into digital production devices, the cutting world has been slow to catch up. But not any more.

[I]

magine an automated flatbed cutting system, with a robotic arm to automatically load your sheets for cutting that is priced at almost half the cost of other systems, and in fact is less than most standard, single sheet flatbed cutting tables. Now imagine that this system was designed in the UK, is well made, reliable and is aimed at the small printer or in-plant, enabling them to reduce costs, save time and labour. It cuts sheets or a pile of mixed sheets. In addition, the system is

environmentally friendly — there are no cutting dies to make, providing the added benefit of allowing instant on-demand prototype or sample cutting and creasing jobs or short run cutting jobs to be made, at the press of a button with no setup costs. Does it sound too good to be true? Well, it is true. Intec Printing Solutions, a global innovator in digital imaging and finishing equipment delivers this in the form of the automated FB8000PRO, their latest and highly affordable development to

the popular ColorCut range of digital cutting and creasing flatbed tables.’ With head offices based in the UK, Intec Printing Solutions, renowned for heavy stock digital print production systems, and metallic foiling systems for digital toner-based print production systems, added cutting equipment to its range two years ago. Intec introduced one of the lowest-priced range of flatbed cutting kit available. However, overwhelming feedback from the market enabled Intec to see a gap in the market for automated

flatbed tables for the digital print industry. Then turning its attention to this area and after two years of development the result of their attentions is their new product, the FB8000 PRO, a high quality, affordable, easy to use, zero maintenance, automated flatbed cutting solution.

Keeping it simple with the ColorCut™FB8000 Pro

Typical of UK design, Intec uses a remarkably simple approach to automated cutting and creasing. The ColorCut™ FB8000PRO uses typical flatbed technology, with some unique new features specifically to automate the technology. The feeder allows anything from 1 to 1,000 sheets of media to be loaded at any one time. The feeder uses optical sensors to raise the stack of media, and pneumatic suction cups similar to those found on a typical printing press, pick up the sheet while the automated robotic arm advances the sheet on to the flat bed surface. To make things even simpler, the position of your sheet is controlled using an advanced CCD Camera registration system to identify where your sheet is placed. It can also read QR codes placed on the sheet at the time of printing, enabling the Intec FB8000 to identify the specific sheet loaded and the job that should be cut or creased. Registration targets placed on the sheet during printing are captured by Intec’s registration system, and if your digital print is skewed or scaled from the imaging process, then Intec’s FB8000 Pro automatically adapts the cutting lines to your print. The FB8000 uses a dual zone high pressure vacuum system to hold the sheet firmly in position, then in typical flatbed cutter technology, a beam/ carriage moves in an X/Y motion over the sheet, cutting and creasing the sheet using the dual tool cutting head mounted in the carriage. Intec’s FB8000 is 100% digital, NO dies to be made, instead it works with industry standard packages like Adobe® Illustrator® or CoreDRAW® taking vector lines drawn in the packages and converting them to cutting or creasing actions. The FB8000 can use up to 960gms of pressure to cut paper, card and laminated substrates up to 600 microns or even some rigid polyester material. Creasing also enjoys a class leading 960gms of pressure enabling users to cut packaging, point of sale items, customised greeting cards or packaging inserts on demand. Cuts are made instantly using the digital system, and can be adapted between sheets if necessary. The flatbed surface on which the media was placed at the start of the process is actually a

continuous belt, an advanced cutting underlay similar to those used on much more expensive or similar systems. After the sheet has been cut and creased the cutting belt is advanced (again automatically), and delivers your finished job in to the output tray at the end of the cutter. This technique of automated cutting makes Intec’s FB8000 one of the most simple, automated cutting systems available today!

Technology SHOULD be simple

The Intec ColorCutTM FB8000 is designed to be easy to use with minimal user intervention. The software backbone behind the system called ColorCut Pro was developed to enable users to simply and automatically add the registration targets to jobs prior to printing and even add a QR code, so the FB8000 can automatically retrieve the file to cut that sheet. In addition, ColorCutPRO will identify different line colours within your Illustrator or CorelDraw design. Simplifying your process and reducing time, allowing users to pick different colours for creasing and cutting, or swap them in case they changed their mind. No need to redraw anything here. No need to learn any new software. Using a CCD camera for registration and QR code job recognition offers the accuracy for near perfect positioning and registration in less time and QR code job identification ensures the correct jobs are cut on every sheet, and less material is wasted. This gives true flexibility as mixed stacks of cutting jobs can be loaded into the feeder and left for automated cutting, with the QR code placed on each sheet ensuring the correct cut is performed on each sheet.

All of this makes the Intec ColorCutTM FB8000 Pro one of the most desirable, automated cutting solutions for printers today — and more so, when you consider the FB8000TM costs only £12,999*, and is available for a limited period with interest free credit. For more details and to arrange a personal demonstration, email: sales@intecprinters.com or call the Intec sales team on: 01202 845960. www.intec.co.uk * Price excludes VAT, delivery and installation.

PRINT FUTURE

2020 PRINT VISION Latcham Direct deliver high-speed standards

in 2010. Hughes said: “We are a company structured on the core values of integrity, trust, respect and commitment, and having a strong printing production in place with the help of Canon allows us to keep in line with these values.” Stuart Rising, Canon UK’s Head of Commercial Print said: “We are so pleased Latcham Direct has put their trust into our products and we are excited to see their production improve with the installation of the Océ VarioPrint i300. The efficiency, quality, and versatility of the machine make it the ideal solution to keep up with the changing nature of the print industry. We know this installation will provide Latcham Direct with the high quality, speed and low running costs they originally set out to achieve.” www.canon.co.uk

Baker Labels extends its print bureau Latcham Direct, a provider of data, digital, print, marketing and fulfilment services in the UK, has installed a new Océ VarioPrint i300 after approaching Canon with aims to boost quality and speed, while reducing running costs. To meet the increasing appetite for print on demand (POD) solutions, Latcham opted to invest in Océ VarioPrint technology as it offered unrivalled quality, media flexibility and productivity. Following indepth consultations with Canon on options to drive greater operational efficiency with lower running costs, the installation was completed. Latcham Direct Managing Director, Mike Hughes, said: “As the majority of work Latcham produces is highly personalised, we needed to find a solution that could offer versatility, without compromising quality standards, to allow the company to offer its customers next generation in high quality personalisation. Before turning to Canon, our print operators were waiting up to 15 minutes before some jobs would start printing, but the VarioPrint has reduced this waiting time to one minute, which we are extremely impressed with.” Committed to providing highly personalised, data driven, digital print and marketing content, Latcham Direct looked to Canon to improve their pre-existing systems. Hughes continued: “The main challenge we faced was selecting the correct devices to replace Latcham’s existing products; Xerox iGen, Docucolour and Nuvera devices. But, following in-depth consultations on possible replacements, it was clear that inkjet was the way forward, given its high quality, speed and low running cost. Flexibility was also a key decision maker, with the ability to print mono, business colour, and high quality marketing material all from the same device.” Key benefits from the installation of the Océ VarioPrint i300 include: *The ability to produce high volume colour inkjet at speed *Unrivalled operational efficiency and productivity *Outstanding ability to provide short-runs, personalised documents, white paper solutions and colour enhanced monochrome documents Latcham Direct has achieved a great deal of success since launching

KM-1 Press achieves world’s first FOGRA53 accreditation

Route 1 Print invest in a fourth Heidelberg

Route 1 Print, the UK’s largest trade printer has continued their 2019, £6 million investment by securing a new Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106. This will be their second press of its type and it will increase the printer’s litho capacities by around 35% to an impressive 68,000sph. The company will be installing the new press at their production facility based in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. This is all in preparation for their annual peak period in September/October, and to continue moving with the company’s rapid growth, which was up 30% from last year. Once installed, the high spec B1 LEUV press with Cutstar will become the company’s 4th fully operational Heidelberg, alongside a similarly configured XL 106, an SX 102, also an eight colour, and a 10 colour XL 75. Speaking with Mark Young, the Head of Route 1 Print, “The current XL 106 has been instrumental in what we’re trying to achieve here, which is offering low cost, high quality and fast turnaround print to our customers. So, we’re really excited to be having the second press installed” The press will mostly be used for flyers and longer run booklet work but also allows flexibility for a variety of different products from business stationery to folded work. Young goes on to mention that “We always hit our peak period in September/October, so every year we ensure that we’re well prepared for when the time comes. The new press allows us to increase our capacity even further so we can continue to provide our customers with the high level of service that they’re used to from us” In addition to this, Route 1 Print are also preparing themselves to install the UK’s first Landa press later on this year. www.route1print.co.uk

Konica Minolta has become the world’s first press manufacturer and global solutions provider to achieve the ‘robust’ FOGRA53 profile certification — another reason to celebrate for its growing family of AccurioJet KM-1 users. This award was made for Konica Minolta’s AccurioJet KM-1 B2 UV LED digital inkjet sheetfed printer after an exhausting testing programme. The machine’s incredible stability, versatility and colour accuracy have all been recognised in the award. The AccurioJet KM-1 can print up to 3,000 single-sided B2 sheets per hour at up to 1,200 dpi. Major benefits of the system include moving short-run offset to digital inkjet, the ability to carry out hybrid printing with the integration of the AccurioJet KM-1 into existing offset processes, duplex printing and larger sheet sizes as well as printing on packaging board, lightweight papers and textured stock. The AccurioJet KM-1 also benefits from Dot Freeze Technology®, which has overcome one of the fundamental challenges of inkjet printing — uncontrolled ink dot movement that reduces print quality and workable materials. DFT uniquely self-freezes ink drops immediately upon contact with the material. A rapid change in temperature turns high flowing inks from a printhead nozzle into a low flowing, immobile ink droplet when it hits the material so the challenge of mottling of colours and of printing on to porous materials is eliminated. Underpinning its customer centric approach, Konica Minolta has developed special pantone books to showcase for customers the wide range of colours that can be produced on the AccurioJet KM-1, which has already been recognized as the “Best Cut-Sheet Colour B2+ Printer” by the European Digital Press Association (EDP). Colin Osborne MBE, Head of Colour Management, Konica Minolta Marketing Services, said: “The robust Fogra certification demonstrates the incredible stability, versatility and colour management of the AccurioJet KM-1 and has been achieved after an exhaustive testing programme. The comprehensive colour gamut of the KM-1 ensures that any CMYK ICC Profile can be achieved, including the wide gamut International Colour Consortium (ICC) Profile FOGRA53. A standard four colour lithographic press would not be able to print to such a wide colour gamut.” “The patented Konica Minolta’s Dot Freeze UV cured KM-1 ink, guarantees the colour stability during the run with a remarkable, industry leading accuracy when measured on a print run of 500 copies.” “The AccurioJet KM-1 has achieved Fogra certification for ICC Profiles: FOGRA39, 47, 51, 52, 53, Japan Colour and GRACoL Coated and Uncoated. This clearly demonstrates the press is a true global press, which can manage global brands. It also demonstrates colour accuracy and consistency no matter what market the printing is produced in.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk/eu-en/hardware/inkjet/accuriojet-km

Friedmans’ Pyjamas enjoy Killing Eve starring role When Jodie Comer’s pop-art-pyjamaed character, Villanelle strode through suburbia in episode one of the hotly anticipated second season of the BBC’s Killing Eve, viewers took to social media in their droves to try to locate the design. It was quickly tracked down to Greater Manchester design studio and fabric printers Friedmans and their design manager, Nick Thomas was both bashful and excited about its starring role in the TV hit. “It was as much a surprise to us that our design ended up in the limelight. The fabric was ordered through our web-to-print portal and it only really came to our attention when we saw the interest on social media after the first episode had aired,” he comments. Friedmans operates a wide ranging print production facility from its Altrincham offices and the initial order came from Killing Eve’s production company, Sid Gentle Films, via a retail web enquiry on the company’s Funkifabrics website. “We wholesale both printed and plain fabrics, so our enquiries can be for something as small as half a metre of material right through to run lengths in their thousands of metres” states Thomas. Recent expansion into larger premises and significant investment in a suite of nine Mimaki textile printers has afforded the capacity, and equally as importantly, flexibility to deliver high quality textile print with a fast turnaround. “We can upscale and downscale our print capacity to match demand,” he continues. “Whether it’s printing hundreds of short runs or delivering substantial single jobs across multiple machines, we’re able to accurately match colour from computer monitor through to production.” This accuracy of colour matching comes down

to a combination of factors, says Thomas. “Over and above the reliability and consistency of the Mimaki printers, we’re using custom AVA software to match output across the range of Mimaki engines. This also ties into other innovative web-to-print capabilities that we use in the business, enabling customers to accurately create their own colourways for designs within our furnishings fabrics range.” Marketed under the Alexander Maverick brand, Friedmans’ “Colour Me” tool empowers interior designers to recolour and scale a range of contemporary textile designs before having them printed to cotton and linen cloths, all available to buy by the metre. Back to the Killing Eve pyjamas and Thomas is happy to see British textile design and manufacturing enjoy the limelight on a global stage. “We were delighted to see the print receive such a positive reaction — especially as the show is so synonymous with great costume design.” Produced on one of Friedmans’ Mimaki TS300 dye sublimation printers (purchased through authorised Mimaki partner, R A Smart), the print was then transferred using a rotary heat press onto a polyester-lycra blend fabric from the high end Italian manufacturer, Carvico, for whom Friedmans are the UK distributor, before being sent to the client where it was cut and sewn into the one off garments. Multiple colourways were provided to enable the similarly styled pairs to be produced for the two cast members and the show’s costume designer, Charlotte Mitchell has been quoted as saying the stretch fabric was specified to ensure for the purposes of the storyline, they appeared ‘tighter and tighter’ and therefore too small on Comer. Thomas concludes, “Friedmans continues

to grow as a business, reaching out to an ever more varied customer base, thanks to our ongoing investment in wide format textile print technology and software - and being able to combine it with a forward-thinking workflow that’s focused on on-demand delivery for customers big and small. The pyjama fabric is a perfect example of what can be achieved when great vision and design come together — it’s tremendously satisfying to see such an impactful end result. We’re continuing to partner with our ecommerce experts to push that side of the business forward and anticipate further growth on the back of i www.hybridservices.co.uk

YPP – “Your Print Partner” invest in DGI HSFTIII YPP Group who boast brands including “Your Print Partner, Custom Gifts, Your Promo Partner, Santa Sacks and Event T’s” has recently invested in the DGI Brand with the introduction of the DGI HSFTIII high speed sublimation printer in to their hardware portfolio. The HSFTIII hit the ground running and was immediately utilised in to their production environment to help produce personalised items for World leading brands including Disney, Warner Brothers and many Premier League Football Clubs to name but a few. Stuart Maclaren Managing Director of YPP first saw the printer at its UK show launch at The Sign & Digital Show 2019 and was truly impressed by the sheer speed of the machine without compromising on quality. After visiting other manufacturers to view their range of

printers Stuart opted for the DGI HSFTIII with the printer being installed on a two month demonstration basis such was the confidence in the product by Sabur Digital. “We know the build and print quality of the DGI HSFT III and knew that when it went in it wouldn’t be coming out, this has proved to be the case.” Aaron Burton Digital Development Director of Sabur. The DGI HSFTIII has now been in operation at YPP’s production facility in Lincoln for three months and has proved to be an excellent acquisition for YPP with the printer producing over 40,000 linear metres of outstanding quality prints. The full range of DGI printers can be seen in Sabur Digitals show suite in Barnsley, South Yorkshire just a short drive from the M1/A1 motorway network. www.sublimationinks.com

Modex adds fabric graphics with Mimaki UJV55-320 With over 20 years of history providing exhibition and event stands, Modex has added new products and capacity to its custom stand offering with further investment in Mimaki printing hardware. A new UJV55-320 3.2m LED UV roll-to-roll grand format printer joins its hard working JFX200-2513 8’ x 4’ LED UV flatbed printer and an array of finishing kit at its Oxfordshire headquarters. Ordered at Sign & Digital UK from Mimaki authorised partner, CMYUK, the UJV55 gives Modex the ability to print fabric graphics in house, leading to a surge in demand for the new style stands. The company’s director, Rob Brooks cites the ability to offer increased choice as key in his decision to invest in the new Mimaki. “We already produce 50 to 60 stands a month using our Mimaki JFX to print directly to foamboard and we’re now able to guide our clients on a design by design basis to the best solution for their exhibition requirements.” Brooks anticipates adoption of the fabric graphics to gain parity with the numbers the company is producing of its modular panelled systems, complementing rather than replacing this part of the business. “By combining both print techniques, we’re able to offer clients an increased range of shapes and structures with which to make their exhibition stands,” he suggests. “The UJV55-320 allows us to produce seamless graphics that fit into a tensioned frame system that’s light, easy to transport and quick to build.” “We’re delighted to see the expansion at

Modex and how their investment in the new Mimaki UJV55 is enabling them to continue to deliver exciting, high quality exhibition solutions for their customers,” says Sue Hayward, Senior Digital Sales Consultant at CMYUK. “The move into fabrics comes at a time where end customers are looking for innovative and creative solutions and Modex are certainly delivering that with their new system.” A significant advantage that comes with using the fabric graphics are their green credentials; “By weight, at least 95% of the stand is recyclable, reusable or re-purposable,” claims Brooks. The company has also demonstrated a further advantage — ease of transport — with a recent exhibition held in Portugal where the design file for the printed graphics arrived two days after the trucks had left Modex’s UK offices. “We printed the fabric panels, loaded them into a small suitcase and one of the team simply took them as hand luggage on their flight to Lisbon,” he recounts. Installed alongside an AE sewing machine to finish the Pongs fabrics supplied by CMYUK, Modex opted to retrain members of its existing graphics team to handle the finishing of the printed material. “With the printer and the sewing machine being so simple to use, training was very quick, so we were up and running in no time,” recalls Brooks. In fact, it was the inherent challenges of working with fabric when compared to rigid board that took the most investigation. “Through trial and error, we determined the exact stretch of the material. To

ensure our usual high quality of finish, we have had to precisely calculate the effect of pulling it into a tensioned system,” he states. “However, we’ve really simplified this for our clients, by supplying an easy to use template that includes cut and bleed marks which guarantee they’re generating the designs accurately, right from the start.” Such has been the take up by both new customers and its existing client base, Brooks is already looking to the future. “It would be no exaggeration to say that this part of business has grown so fast, that we’re already looking at a second Mimaki UJV55-320 to add to our fleet.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? The Record Store

A man walked into a record store and asked the assistant, “Have you got anything by The Doors?” “Yes,” she said, “a bucket and a fire extinguisher.”

Wee Cough

I phoned my work this morning and said, “Sorry boss, I can’t come in today, I have a wee cough.” He said, “You have a wee cough?” I said, “Really? Thanks boss, I could use a week off!”

A Shower of Meat

Three dinosaurs stumble across a magic lamp. They rub it and a genie appears. “I have three wishes, so I’ll give one to each of you,” the genie announces. The first dinosaur thinks hard. “Alright,” he says, “I’ll have a big, juicy, piece of meat.” Instantly, the biggest, juiciest piece of meat he’d ever seen appears in front of him. Not to be outdone, the second dinosaur thinks even harder. “I know! I’ll have a shower of meat!” Immediately, huge pieces of meat rain down around him. The third dinosaur, certainly not to be outdone, thinks harder than the previous dinosaurs. “I’ve got it!” he cries, “I want a MEATIER shower!

Soup For Lunch

One morning my wife asked our four-year-old son, John, what he wanted for breakfast. ”Soup,” he said. “Son, we don’t eat soup for breakfast. We eat soup for lunch. So what would you like for breakfast?” “Lunch,” he replied.

Home Insecurity

As I stepped out of the shower, I heard someone in my kitchen downstairs. Knowing that my wife was out, I grabbed my 1903 heirloom rifle—which no longer works—and crept downstairs, forgetting the fact that I was in my birthday suit. I came around the corner with the gun raised, only to find my wife loading the dishwasher. “What are you doing?” she asked. “I thought I heard an intruder. I came down to scare him.” Scanning the contours of my doughy, naked body, she mumbled, “You didn’t need the gun.”

My Job On The Road

I got fired from my job as a taxi driver... It turns out my customers didn’t like it when I tried to go the extra mile.

I Just Bought A Pig

Two friends were chatting. “I’ve just bought a pig!” said the first. “But where will you keep it?” asked the second. “Your garden is much too small for a pig!” “I’m going to keep it under my bed,” replied the first. “But what about the smell?” “He’ll soon get used to that.”

Lottery

Visions Of The Future

A man went to the doctor and said: “Doctor, I keep having visions of the future.” “When did these start?” “Next Thursday.”

How Do I Look?

A wife comes downstairs before a dinner date with her husband. “Do I look fat in this dress?” the wife asks. “Do I look dumb in this shirt?” the husband replies.

Going To A Lecture

A man was staggering home drunk in the early hours of the morning when he was stopped by a police officer. “What are you doing out at this time of night?” asked the officer. “I’m going to a lecture,” said the drunk. “And who’s going to be giving a lecture at this hour?” “My wife.”

Past Relationships

I made a graph of all my past relationships... It has an “ex” axis and a “why” axis.

Did You Hear

Fried Egg or Boiled Egg

Lost Baggage

Why is girlfriend one word but best friend is two words? Because your best friend gives you space when you need it.

I’m A Talking Tree

Embrace Your Mistakes

Upon arrival, the lumberjack started to swing at the tree, when the tree suddenly shouted, “Wait! I’m a talking tree!” The lumberjack grinned and said, “And you will dialogue!”

Why did the doctor carry out blood tests on the secretarial candidates? So that he could eliminate type-Os.

A woman rushes into her house one morning and yells to her husband, “Sam, pack up your stuff. I just won the lottery!” “Shall I pack for warm weather or cold?” “Whatever. Just so you’re out of the house by noon!” Little Johnny walked into his classroom with a fried egg on his head. The teacher asked, “Why do you have a fried egg on your head?” Little Johnny responded, “Because a hard boiled egg rolls off.”

Girlfriend and Best Friend

Blood Tests

My significant other and I were discussing mistakes we have made in our relationship. I suggested she should embrace her mistakes. She then hugged me.

There was this man who muttered a few words in the church and found himself married... A year later he muttered something in his sleep and found himself divorced. After returning from a trip overseas, my luggage did not show up in the airport baggage area. Being a frequent flyer I knew the drill and went to the lost luggage office. I told the woman there that my bags hadn’t shown up on the carousel. She smiled and told me not to worry because they were trained professionals and that I was in good hands. “Now,” she asked, “has your plane arrived yet?”

Haircut

The morning of the big parade, a man and a little boy entered a barbershop together. “Give me the full treatment,” the man said. “I want to look good in the parade!” After the man received a shave, manicure, and haircut, he placed the boy in the chair. “I’m going to buy a new tie to wear for the parade,” he said. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.” When the boy’s haircut was done and the man still hadn’t returned, the barber said, “It looks like your daddy forgot all about you.” “That wasn’t my daddy,” said the boy. “He just walked up, took me by the hand and said, “Come on, son, we’re going to get a free haircut!”

Which is Heavier

Which is heavier: a litre of water or a litre of butane? The water. No matter how much you have, butane will always be a lighter fluid.

Road Racket

We were at a red light when a car pulled up, its music blasting. “He’ll be deaf before he’s 25,” I said. “That won’t help us,” my wife replied. “He’ll only turn it up.”

Short Note

Once my dog ate all the Scrabble tiles... He kept leaving little messages around the house.

Horse Sense

Last week a friend and I decided to take a day off and go to the racetrack. I bet on a horse at 10 to one. It came in at quarter past four.

A Chicken and Egg

I ordered a chicken and an egg on Amazon. I’ll let you know.

Old Dance With A New Name

Shaving Can Be Dangerous

A man named Benny meets a genie that grants him three wishes. Benny wishes for a fine house, a beautiful wife, and a million pounds. The genie grants his wishes, but warns him that he can never shave his beard, or he will be turned into an urn. Benny enjoys his life for many years, but his lovely wife doesn’t like his beard and asks him to shave it off. Though afraid of the genie’s prophesy, Benny shaves his beard, and is immediately turned into an urn. The moral: A Benny shaved is a Benny urned!

Progress?

A psychiatrist congratulated his patient on making such good progress. ”You call this progress?” snapped the patient. ”Six months ago, I was Abraham Lincoln. Now I’m a nobody!”

How To Use A Chain Saw

Tree fellers walk into a hardware store and ask for a chainsaw that can cut down six trees in one hour. The salesman recommends the top of the line model. The group are suitably impressed, and buy it. The next day they bring it back, complaining that it would only cut down one tree and it took ALL DAY! The salesman takes the chain saw, starts it up to see what’s wrong, and the Tree Fellers say, “What’s that noise?”

It’s Common Sense

You know that tingly little feeling you get when you like someone? That’s common sense leaving your body.

I don’t know why most people think a dog’s life is so easy.

RUNNING LATE: Official Glossary

The official glossary to running late... “On the way...” – Still in bed. “In the car...” – In the shower. “GPS says 35 min...” – Getting ready. “There’s traffic...” – Leaving the house. “Parking now...” – 15 minutes out. “Can’t find a spot...” – 5 minutes out. “Walking in...” – Looking for a spot.

Flat Flyers

A criminal has an idea for a business. To execute the crooked plan he hires a partner. He explains everything, “First, you secretly flatten people’s car tyres. Then, offer our tyre changing service through an advertisement. Got it?” A few weeks later, after getting no customers, the cops show up at their tyre changing garage, placing them under arrest due to suspicious advertising. On the way to jail, the criminal who thought up the plan asks the partner about the advertisement. “Well, I had a great idea. I realised we could save ourselves a lot of time by stabbing our flyer directly into the tyres.”

One And Two Goldfish

A little girl won two goldfish at a fair. When the family arrived home, her mother asked her what she was going to call them. “I think I’ll call them One and Two,” said the little girl. “They’re unusual names for goldfish; why have you chosen them?” ”Because if one dies, I’ll still have two!”

Every time I come home from work...

What’s The Word?

A girl is doing a crossword puzzle... “What’s a seven letter word for ‘easily perceived or understood’ that starts with ‘O’?” “Isn’t it obvious?” “It should be, but I can’t figure it out. That’s why I’m asking.”

Too Much Reality TV

I came to the realisation that my five year old was watching too much reality TV when we attended a wedding. As the four bridesmaids walked down the aisle to the altar, he asked, “Is this where the groom picks the one he wants to marry?” Two Eskimos Two Eskimos were chatting. One said, “Where did your mother come from?” “Alaska.” “Don’t bother, I’ll ask her myself!” Fisherman’s Tale One fisherman to another, “You should’ve seen what happened yesterday at the lake.” “What happened?” “I caught a twenty-three pound salmon!” “Were there any witnesses?” “Yes, of course! If there wasn’t, it would’ve been thirty-three pounds.”

Goat, Was Horse’s Best Friend!

One day, the horse became very ill and he called the veterinarian, who said, “Well, your horse has a virus. He must take this medicine for three days. I’ll come back on the 3rd day and if he’s not better, we’re going to have to put him to sleep.” Nearby, the goat listened closely

...I ask my dog how his day went?

to their conversation. The next day, the vet gave him the medicine and left. The goat approached the horse and said, “Be strong, friend. Get up or else they’re going to put you to sleep!” On the second day, the vet again gave him the medicine and left. The goat came back and said, “Come on buddy, get up or else you’re going to die! Come on, I’ll help you get up. Let’s go! One, two, three...” The poor horse wouldn’t get up. On the third day, the vet gave one look at the horse and said, “Unfortunately, we’re going to have to put him down tomorrow. Otherwise, the virus might spread and infect the other horses.” After they left, the goat approached the horse and said, “Listen pal, it’s now or never! Get up, come on! Have courage! Come on! Get up! Get up! That’s it, slowly! Great! Come on, one, two, three... Good, good. Now faster, come on... Fantastic! Run, run more! Yes! Yay! Yes! You did it, you’re a champion!” All of a sudden, the owner came back to the farm; saw the horse running on the field. Not aware of the goat’s role in this he began shouting, “It’s a miracle! My horse is cured. We must have a Grand celebration... LET’S COOK THE GOAT!”

One Off

I went on a date with a girl who said she loved animals. I said, “I work with animals every day.” She said, “That’s so sweet. What do you do?” I replied, “I’m a butcher!” We never went on a second date.

He always says, “Rough!”
