COUNTRYSIDE ART BOOSTS COLOUR WITH MIMAKI With its design, print and manufacturing located under one, solar panel clad roof in Lincolnshire, Countryside Art has added to its in-house capabilities by investing in a Mimaki TR300-1850C textile coating machine. Designed for pre and post treating textiles for printing with pigment inks, the TR300’s small footprint and on-demand operational benefits appealed to company director, Lawrence Chapman as he strived to optimise the performance of Countryside Art’s cotton printing. With customers ranging from schools and charities to globally renown retail clients and visitor attractions, Countryside Art’s portfolio of UK made products holds universal appeal. “We’re able to offer small minimum runs, short lead times, competitive pricing and superb quality,” states Lawrence, as he discusses the company’s range of tea towels, cushion covers, tote bags and aprons; all printed on a bank of Mimaki Tx300-1800 textile inkjet printers. “We work with clients to turn their design ideas into reality across a multitude of products that represent our core ethos of delivering high quality, bespoke giftware with an expert, personal approach.” Simple to use, the TR300 roll-to-roll unit applies a coating to the fabric to improve print results, and once inserted into the coater, the fabric passes through a padder, where it is saturated with the necessary chemicals before passing through squeeze rollers and a dryer, and finally being rewound onto a roll. Countryside Art invested in the TR300 through authorised Mimaki partner, RA Smart (CAD & Machinery) and the company’s Magnus Mighall is confident of the opportunities the new machine presents. “The versatility of the Mimaki coating machine means Countryside Art can offer their customers the opportunity to use specific fabrics, which up until this point would not have been cost effective to coat using an external supplier.” “From a technical perspective, it’s also possible to enhance the finished product with a range of treatments, be it pre or post print – aiding the wash and rub fastness and even adding fire retardant or waterproof coatings,” Magnusl continues. “We’re proud to have Countryside Art as a long standing customer, with their first investment in a Mimaki textile printer some five years ago, and we continue to enjoy seeing the amazing work they produce.” The new Mimaki TR300 has enabled Countryside Art to achieve higher colour yield and reduce its lead times, thanks to the improvements that printing to
a pre-prepared fabric offers. “We are now able to coat textiles as and when we need them,” Lawrence describes, “The ability to enhance our colour yield has made a significant difference to colour matching, which for our corporate customers is especially critical,” he continues. Countryside Art sports substantial direct to textile printing capabilities, thanks to its five Mimaki TX300-1800 wide format printers, running Mimaki water based pigment inks and printing direct to a variety of cotton base cloths, all woven specially for the company to ensure the highest quality and an ethical and sustainable supply chain. From design, through printing and onto machining and finishing, the company prides itself in offering a complete solution to its customer base. www.hybridservices.co.uk 01270 501900

Part of Paragon Group, Paragon Customer Communications (PCC) provides end to end communications solutions that help businesses connect with customers easily, rewardingly and imaginatively. Steven Atkins, head of litho at PCC, explains: “We have been using a Horizon BQ-270V single clamp perfect binder and were pleased with the equipment and service provided from IFS. As part of an investment into our perfect binding capabilities we identified the need for a system that offered greater efficiencies for longer runs.” The new 800bph Horizon BQ-500 four clamp perfect binder builds on the successful tried and trusted features of its BQ-470 and BQ-480 predecessors. WELLINGTON PRESS UPGRADES FLATBED CUTTER Wellington Press, Leyton, East London, has taken the decision to upgrade its flatbed cutter from the Valiani Mat Pro Ultra V150 to the Valiani Optima 160. The product was purchased and installed by Morgana Systems, the UK exclusive distributor for Valiani products. Commenting on the purchase, Nick Murray, Managing Director of Wellington Press, said: “We are now regularly handling thicker substrates. The Optima 160 can cut up to 20mm, and we can now work on materials up to 1,600mm x 1,230mm. It also allows us to produce work faster thanks largely to the twin head tool station. That means, for example, that we can cut and crease at the same time.” The Valiani Optima 160 replaces an existing Valiani Matt Pro Ultra V150 at Wellington Press. “The V150 was a great product, and has served us well, but, as demand has grown, the time was right for us to move to a more capable and more productive machine,” added Nick. “Morgana kept in touch with us after the initial purchase. We were able to update them on our progress with that unit, and when the more robust Optima unit became available to them, they talked to us about the benefits the change might offer us. We were looking for faster production and the ability to cut thicker boards, and that is what the more robust Optima can provide.” The Valiani Optima series of flatbed cutting tables offer extreme versatility. The Optima 160 machine is a vacuum flatbed die-cutting unit that is able to cut a wide range of materials up to 20mm (3/4″) thick, on a bed measuring 1,600 x 1,230mm. The unit is ideal for in-house prototyping, point of sale displays, or short to medium runs of packaging boxes – which can even incorporate high levels of personalisation. Valiani Optima units provide the user with reliability and flexibility, and are simple and intuitive to operate. The Optima series incorporates refined cutting technology that can satisfy the most demanding of users. The 160 offers a vacuum table for holding the media in place, a twin headed tool station, and interchangeable accessories for cutting, half-cutting and creasing, drawing and oscillating, and perforating a wide range of media. The Optima comes as standard with a camera for crop mark detection. Used in combination with the optional OptiCrop software, the unit can perform accurate contour cutting and creasing around pre-printed media – even with print distorted materials. Regarding other work types produced, Nick Murray said: “The typical workload for our cutting table has been incredibly mixed: short runs of boxes,

either for prototype or small production runs; banner products; point of sales pieces; as well as general signage items of all shapes and sizes for a wide variety of purposes.” When talking short runs of boxes, Nick added: “With the additional productivity offered by the new Optima machine, I can see that extended to 100 pieces or more.” www.morgana.co.uk

DRYTAC SETS SAIL WITH MONKEY FIST IN ATLANTIC DASH EXTREME ENDURANCE CHALLENGE
Drytac’s Polar Grip Matte film was put to the ultimate test in the last couple of months when graphics printed on the material were featured on a boat crossing the Atlantic Ocean in an extreme endurance challenge. A team of four men rowed, non-stop, for 3,200 miles from Lanzarote in the Canary Islands to the island of Antigua in the Caribbean, in a challenge dubbed the ‘Atlantic Dash’. Skipper Billy Taylor was joined by Johnny Ward, Matthew Pritchard and Martin Heseltine for the journey, which took 50 days, 5 hours and 12 minutes. Such was the extreme nature of the challenge that Monkey Fist Adventures, organiser of the event, relied on Drytac materials — once again — for support in decorating the boat with striking graphics that would be able to withstand the harsh environment out on the Atlantic Ocean. Globe Print, a long term user of Drytac products, took on the task of printing the graphics, having previously worked with Monkey Fist Adventures on one of its previous challenges. The Marlow based company used a Roland SolJet EJ-640 large format printer to print the graphics on Drytac’s Polar Grip film which was then paired with their Interlam Pro Emerytex overlaminate. Polar Grip is a self-adhesive vinyl for digitally printed graphics and signs, designed to look vibrant and remain in place for up to five years, making it the ideal solution for such a testing project. The graphics, featuring the many sponsors supporting the event, were applied to the boat on location in Lanzarote prior to the team setting off on their journey. Barry Hayes, Director of Monkey Fist Adventures,
said the decision to work with Drytac and Globe Print again for the Atlantic Dash challenge was an easy one, with the graphics used in a previous event having proved extremely successful. “Oceans are harsh on everything, but our sponsors — and their logos — remained solid and steadfast for the entirety of both the Atlantic Dash crossings. “The Globe Print team went above and beyond to produce the printed graphics exceedingly quickly — as they knew we had very tight timeframes.” The latest Atlantic Dash challenge came about as the Monkey Fist Adventures team sought to restore some sort of normality after Covid-19. Alex Mason, co-founder of Monkey Fist Adventures, had not seen her mother in more than a year due to the pandemic, while Billy Taylor, another co-founder who skippered the Atlantic Dash, had to endure his partner contracting Covid-19 while working on the frontline for the NHS. Barry Hayes suffered with mental health issues during the pandemic but was thankfully able to access the right support. The Atlantic Dash has raised more than £8,000 for two very worthy causes: HUMEN, a movement to improve and maintain men’s mental health; and Dean Farm Trust, an organisation committed to working for a sustainable, healthy and cruelty free planet. This was less than hoped for, but with the constraints of Covid-19 it became somewhat challenging for fundraising to be as effective. “However, the major goal of the Atlantic Dash was to get people talking about their mental health and it absolutely worked!” Barry concludes. www.drytac.com

CAMPAIGNERS HAIL ‘LANDMARK’ VICTORY ON PAPER Consumer campaign group Keep Me Posted has hailed a decision by a US court to force a waste management company to stop charging customers for receiving paper statements as a Judith Donovan CBE landmark victory. A federal judge in New York ruled that a prominent service provider must refund millions of dollars and stop charging consumers fees to receive paper bills in what campaigners have described as a ‘monumental’ win. The UK-based Keep Me Posted campaign calls on organisations, including banks, councils, utility companies and telecoms providers, to give their customers a choice in how they receive communications. The US Keep Me Posted campaign, based in Chicago, described the settlement as “a major boost to Keep Me Posted’s advocacy for the right of every consumer in North America to choose, free of charge, how they receive important information from their service providers.” Judith Donovan CBE, Chair of the Keep Me Posted campaign, also welcomed the decision, that will force the company to halt its practice of charging customers a $6.50 fee to receive paper bills and statements. Consumers who were unfairly charged over four years will be entitled to a portion of a $2.7m settlement. She said: “This is an historic win for consumers and a wake-up call to organisations that charge their customers simply for receiving important communications on paper. The judge was very clear that no person or organisation should charge a consumer for choosing a paper billing statement. “As a coalition of consumer groups, charities and businesses who are committed to protecting consumer access to paper bills and statements at no extra charge, Keep Me Posted applauds this tremendous victory for consumers.” The Keep Me Posted campaign is chaired by Judith Donovan CBE and is a partnership of representatives over 125 concerned organisations such as Age UK, the Countryside Alliance, Scope, Mencap, the Institute of Consumer Affairs and Money saving expert.com Keep Me Posted campaign partners believe that it is every consumer’s right to choose, without disadvantage, how they receive paper bills and statements from banks, utility companies and other service providers in the face of an increasing trend of businesses switching their customers to mainly digital transactions, which isn’t always preferable or suitable for a large proportion of UK consumers. www.keepmeposted.org.uk

KERN’S NEW 3200 HIGH PERFORMANCE INSERTER Kern has announced the launch of the 3200, a high performance, multi-format inserting system, introducing automatic switching between different envelope sizes for the first time to achieve faster changeover time between applications and class leading uninterrupted processing. The new machine will come in three versions to cater for all speed requirements up to 24,000 envelopes per hour. Also announced was a faster version of Kern’s existing 1600 inserter machine, able to handle speeds of up to 16,000 envelopes an hour. Along with the three new 3200s, the expanded entry level 1600 range completes Kern’s inserter platform of six inserters, designed to cater for all industry requirements as many customers shift to shorter runs and demand more flexibility. Kern’s first new high speed inserter launched since 2016, the Kern 3200 can be used wherever there is demand for flexible and complex requirements and can handle both transactional and direct mail. The multi-format machine has a newly developed inserting module at its heart, which can be equipped with more than one envelope magazine. This unique concept in this class of inserter means different jobs can be run in succession, without an operator having to intervene and change envelopes. “Perfect for today’s direct mail requirement of
processing multiple jobs on the same machine, the Kern 3200’s modular design ensures investment protection for the future and completes Kern’s new inserting platform of six inserters,” explained David Cox, Head of UK Sales at Kern. “With direct mail reasserting its importance during the pandemic, the newly expanded family of machines now reaches all customer budgets and inserting demands. Kern is known for its large volume, high speed inserting with total reliability and the 3200 cements this position. We expect high interest in the 3200 due to the flexible manner in which it can deliver multiple
mail campaigns with one of the fastest job change overs in the industry, while the cost effective 1600 range ensures smaller jobs and budgets are now better catered for too.” The new machines are available for order from September with expected lead times of Q1 2022. The initial version of the 3200 is expected to have a throughput of up to 24k.The other two 3200 models will have speeds anticipated at higher and lower levels. The naming convention for the other two models will be announced in due course. www.kern.co.uk

VersaWorks 6 ‘Job Assistant’ function enables you to edit vector data in PDF and easily add contour lines to ensure the outlines of graphics are cut
10
accurately, eliminating the need for users to switch back to Adobe® Illustrator®, CorelDRAW® or other graphics software to complete production. The GR2 series also features a multi-crop mark function for more accurate contour cutting of large quantities of printed material and cutting after lamination. It also includes the Roland DG AAS II plug-in software for pairing with other large format inkjet printers. The GR2 series comes equipped with the powerful, best in class FlexiSign GR2-Edition software which is free for the first year upon registration. This software offers a complete suite to design and cut graphic files and seamlessly integrates with GR2 series cutters for a cut only or print then cut workflow. “What’s more,” Willems adds, “the GR2 series excels in its quality, productivity and cost efficiency. These defining features of Roland’s products help users get ahead of the fierce competition in the professional print community by allowing them to branch into new creative offerings and deliver even more cutting-edge solutions to their customers.” Roland products and service are available at your QPP preferred Supplier www.yourprintspecialists.co.uk

C10010VP SERIES AUTOMATED IMAGEPRESS
Canon Europe introduces two new advanced automation options – a Sensing Unit and an Inspection Unit – for the imagePRESS C10010VP Series digital colour press. This launch further supports customers in print production environments to consistently achieve the highest quality printed output, in less time and without manual operator intervention. Boosting time efficiency by removing the need for manual calibration, the new Sensing Unit monitors front to back registration and colour tone before and during printing, automatically adjusting on the fly to ensure consistency with the job settings, from the first sheet to the last. This real time adjustment, with reference to the printed media, adds to the high level of colour control on the image transfer belt offered by the Multi D.A.T technology, which is a standard feature of the imagePRESS C10010VP Series. For customers wanting to eliminate manual inspection against certain criteria, the new Inspection Unit delivers a significant automation opportunity. The unit monitors every printed page for issues such as distortion, as well as identifying defects such as streaks and dirt on the media. Customers can choose to purge and automatically reprint faulty pages, for perfect output without compromising productivity. Alternatively, flawed pages can either be purged without reprinting, or the operator can simply receive a log of the pages which fell short of the pre-set quality benchmark. The Inspection Unit can spot defects as small as 0.2mm diameter without impacting productivity, and the sensitivity levels can be tailored to the specific
needs of each job. The operator can define up to 64 zones on each page to be checked against the inspection criteria, each with nine possible levels of sensitivity. For example, a higher quality standard might be set for company logos, critical product images and human faces, with less stringent controls for background images. Joseph Courts Head of Product at Canon UK & Ireland, comments: “The imagePRESS C10010VP Series already sets the highest standards of quality and productivity, meeting the expectations of even the most demanding print buyers. These new developments remove the need for any manual calibration and inspection that would require an additional investment of time, visual checks and subjective judgement. “The development of these automation options demonstrates that we listen and respond to our customers’ needs. We know how important efficiency is to our customers and therefore they now have the option to fully automate these inspection and calibration processes. This gives them the confidence to produce flawless prints and redeploy staff and expertise to other value adding areas. With these new technologies, customers can boost their productivity and profitability, minimise costly reprints and waste, shorten job turnaround times, and focus operator skills where they add most value.” www.canon.co.uk/business-printers-and-faxes/imagepress-c10010vpseries/advanced-automation-modules

In a bid to help customers increase their application production efficiency, improve automation and minimise downtime Canon adds a third party inline finishing solution to its portfolio – the SDD PTM7006 Press Trim Module booklet trimmer. Exclusive to Canon, the SDD PTM7006 Press Trim Module can be attached inline to a Canon imagePRESS C910 or varioPRINT 140 Series printer, enabling fast production of brochures and manuals in one streamlined operation, without additional handling or finishing steps. Trimming the long edge of booklets up to 6 mm thick, the module also flattens the spine to give a superior, professional appearance and makes packing, stacking and distribution easier. Customers can choose from two more options to further enhance booklet quality – a two side trimmer for full bleed applications and a square fold module to achieve a completely square spine. Joseph Courts, Head of Product Marketing for Canon UK & Ireland, comments: “For print businesses, the pandemic has put fresh emphasis on the importance of automation and of adding value for customers. Finishing is key to both and we’re committed to offering the broadest possible choice of solutions, helping print producers to succeed by streamlining production and branching out into new application areas. With this new option from our finishing partner SDD, PSPs and in-house print departments working with Canon digital toner printers can add a professional edge to their products, while cutting production time and costs.” www.canon.co.uk/business-printers-and-faxes/sdd-press-trim-module/

SEEKING SERENDIPITY
Serendipity is not a word used very often, and it’s a concept rarely enjoyed in these days of internet trawling and online information gathering and purchase. It’s the process of discovering something by accident that you never really knew you wanted but will be found to be pleasant or useful, or both. It’s a condition more common in the days of window shopping when the high street was packed with more variety and choice, rather than the same chain outlets and cheap cut price disposable dross. But, as Martin Christie suggests, maybe it was a time when browsing the town was more of an adventure than a disappointment.
W
e can’t turn back the digital clock but the relentless rush to move everything we need on web-based shelves rather than real ones has a selfperpetuating result that shoppers have less immediate choice and variance. Having the world at your fingertips is just an illusion if you can’t actually touch it. The global pandemic has, of course, significantly accelerated the migration to the cloud. Still, there’s a certain irony to the fact that in aid of recovery, people are now being encouraged to shop locally when so many of the shelves have already been cleared of stock and options are limited. Perhaps a realisation that lots of short journeys for the person rather than lots of long ones for goods and lorries might actually be better for the environment will sink in and reverse the situation. But much of that resource, along with many household names, has already been lost forever, or so it seems. I fear it will take more than a few words in this obscure column to turn around the juggernaut that is ‘popular demand for convenience’ as many pundits like to term it. Still, hopefully, the proverbial penny (and not a bitcoin) will begin to drop. The business plan of not keeping anything in stock and only ordering when you need it was thought up by the accountants, those bean counters who believed “just in time” was a sustainable way to run an economy. That was long before anyone realised that a carbon footprint was a more important consideration than profit margin. And the system only worked as well as nothing unexpected interrupted the flow of supply — like a container ship getting stuck in a canal. That’s when you realise that having everything you need urgently in ten thousand metal boxes sailing halfway around the world may not be such a good idea after all. Suppose you have to halt a significant production line awaiting a few minor items made in the Far East because they were half the price. In that case, the economics suddenly become somewhat different. But like the big boat, I’m starting to stray from my original course. Finding something unexpected, rather than something you were looking for, is more than enjoyable but an essential part of the path of human discovery, much like Christopher 14
Ships have got a little bigger since the Suez canal was built in 1869
Columbus, who set out to find a route to China and landed in America, or at least a little offshore bit of it. My own chosen profession, photography, began with someone leaving a key in a drawer on top of some chemically treated paper, only to discover its outline preserved on the paper sometime later. From such small acorns… So serendipity is an important part of the human condition, as much of a learning process as an exploration of the unexpected. Even at the print shop, we so often have customers asking for one thing only to be guided to another they had no idea of. If you only look for what you think you want, that’s all you’ll get. And that’s where the online experience is fundamentally flawed. How can you search for something you don’t know exists? Even the very term ‘browsing’ is flawed, implying as it does the casual grazing of animals to find a choice morsel amid the less appetising
acres of vegetation. On the internet, now, you are much more likely to be directed to what someone else wants you to sample. You’ll certainly never get a chance to nibble something you might like but which is entirely different from anything you have tried before. If you’ve never liked your green vegetables, you’ll never be offered a brussels sprout. The internet is, of course, a wonderful resource, and I’m fortunate and old enough to have trawled it from its beginnings when, like all of us, it was a lot more naive and innocent. It would generally direct you to things you wanted to know rather than things it wanted you to find. There is an important difference. As an electronic encyclopedia, it is like nothing in history with more stored information than the fabled library of Alexandria (you can Google that). But you still have to tread carefully around it. SEPTEMBER 2021 • QUICK PRINT PRO
PIXEL PROPHET Because it is open-source, it is also a minefield of deadly traps that may well blow up in your face if you don’t tread cautiously. Increasingly it is the domain of those who want to direct you where they want you to go. The perception that the internet is free for everyone is, of course, another illusion. We all pay for it in various ways, connection charges, or allowing our personal information and preferences to be collected and used for marketing purposes. Then there are those who pay a lot more to have their name and services promoted to the top of the search engines regardless of any qualitative scrutiny or vetting. So customers comparing your prices online may be looking at a product that doesn’t begin to compare on quality even it appears to do on price. For example, unless you can actually see it and touch it, how can you compare chalk and cheese, which actually looks the same in texture online? As we know, if we have a customer at the counter and can talk them through what they actually want and what they want to spend, then we can direct them to the best option for both of us. Trying to converse by email is a mechanical, metronome-like conversation that has so many potential flaws. It is virtually useless with anything more than basic information. That’s also why working from home was never going to work in the long term, and for most proper jobs. Another idea sponsored by the money men who eyed the massive savings that could be made on office rental space inexpensive city centres. They were even generous enough to suggest that those benefiting from the convenience could have a pay cut to compensate for not spending time and money commuting. The problem is that unless you’re a lighthouse man — and I’m not sure there are any of them left — a Scottish crofter or a lonely goat herder, work is a shared experience. We learn from each other through experience and exchange of knowledge, and by good practice as well as bad. And this way we learn things we didn’t expect to know as well as things we wanted. So it’s at the workplace as well as the market that we need to keep the opportunity for serendipity, or we risk losing more than a surprise find.
STEAMY WINDOWS
One of the areas where we have seen limited choice over the years is in the operating systems in the devices on which we rely, with Microsoft dominating global communications with its Windows platform. So last month, I took a little lighthearted dig at the forthcoming launch of Windows 11, due to be an update to number ten and eventually replace it by 2025. Unfortunately, this month it’s not looking quite so funny now that beta versions have been circulating on trial. Further information about system requirements has been issued, revised, and clarified to produce even more fog and confusion. On the positive side at least many of the QUICK PRINT PRO • SEPTEMBER 2021
inevitable bugs are likely to be sought out and fixed before it is more widely used. This has not always been the case in the past in a rush to get novelty on the market, but perhaps the very lack of competition rather than caution has encouraged the boys and girls from Seattle to measure their steps. Rather more concerning is the performance specification demanded to run Windows 11, which will potentially make a good proportion of the computers in current use redundant. Due to howls of complaint across the web, Microsoft seems to be backpedalling on its initial system details, but the situation is far from clear. What is evident is that it will require much more processing power than previous computers, even comparatively recent ones, and that is the rub. While it would seem obvious that greater performance would put more load on an engine, to use a car analogy for those not intimately familiar with microprocessors’ internals, the lack of options is at the heart of the matter. You can still nurse an old car engine and not push it beyond its limits, but you don’t have that choice with a computer. The operating system is effectively at the controls. What is more “old” in Microsoft terms seems to be anything made over five years ago, or even more recent but using older parts. It appears that any processors made before 2017 will not be able to cope with Windows 11, and with no accurate tally, that must include a large proportion of the computers worldwide, let alone any other devices, such as printers, using the same items. Demanding the so-called eighth generation of processors, Microsoft is effectively consigning the previous seven to the dustbin, and it’s the
imperious nature of this decision that has really got people’s attention and downright anger. Five years is hardly a long life for an expensive piece of technology, and few businesses, let alone private users, will have scheduled the cost of replacing their entire hardware in that time, especially when nearly two years have effectively been taken out by pandemic. Of course, we know that is not realistic. We know from previous history that old operating systems continue to be in use long after their sell-by date, often in large and rather important institutions like banks and large public organisations. The cost of refitting and sometimes retraining staff is prohibitive, and procrastination is a much easier option. But is there a cost of not benefiting from the adoption of Windows 11? That is the real electronic elephant in the room because part of the reason for updating systems is not just performance but also security. We may have forgotten it, but international cybercrime and insidious bugs have not gone away. Much like Covid, they are still out there and breeding, and we may have got a little complacent in thinking the very real danger was diminishing. Microsoft, who has also been a target themselves, must know as much about this as anyone and implicit in their specification demands for Windows 11 is the implication that previous processors, including those using Windows 10, cannot be made completely secure. Behind all the juicy carrots dangled in front of the launch, there may be a rather nasty stick. It is something that the people who make the majority of processors like Intel and AMD are currently burning the midnight oil. Not all surprises are pleasant ones! 15

ANTALIS SPONSOR STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION Antalis has partnered with Brief Cases, who link business and education, to present the ‘Smart Luxury Packaging – Cosmetics Brief’ competition in collaboration with leading art institution, Norwich University of the Arts, to support the packaging designers of the future. 10 submissions from students at Norwich University of the Arts have now been shortlisted for the competition, which requires students to respond to the challenges of the pandemic by addressing the realities of the closure of retail stores. Students taking part in the Smart Luxury Packaging – Cosmetics Brief competition were tasked with designing packaging for a fictitious high end start-up company, which would enhance the unboxing experience for consumers taking delivery of cosmetic packaged goods at home rather than in store.
Student projects have gone through a robust multi-stage shortlisting process reviewing all entries singularly, before allocating points on a scale of 1-10 for creativity, usability, commercial viability, brand strength, unboxing, use of materials together with qualitative feedback. This rigorous process led to a shortlist of 10 concepts for final review by the industry panel, which will be held on the 15th July. Winners will have the opportunity to have their work
shown at Packaging Innovations on Antalis’ stand on 22 and 23 September. Steve Chappell, comments “It is an honour to work with the students from Norwich University of the Arts to develop and nurture their talent. The quality of the work they have produced is excellent, and I am looking forward to judging the entries alongside leading industry figures”. www.antalis.com

Each year, the coveted calendar project serves a compendium of the UK’s very best creative work, with the 2022 edition now open for registration. Ambra Fridegotto, Fedrigoni UK, commented: “Following a year of immense upheaval for the creative sector, community and togetherness has never been more important. Inclusion and positivity has always been at the heart of the Fedrigoni 365 project, bringing together creatives of all styles and generations in the spirit of collaboration. We hope to continue the legacy of creative connectedness through the 2022 edition.”
Now in its fifth year, Fedrigoni is calling upon the UK’s creative community to register their interest in designing for the 2022 edition of the calendar. Interested applicants can submit their details via the Fedrigoni 365 website, after which a selection will be invited to contribute. The design concept for each edition differs per year, with the inaugural calendar for 2018 printed entirely in silver on Fedrigoni’s Sirio Ultra Black. Where the 2019 edition paid homage to the company’s expansive collection of white papers, the 2020 calendar celebrated the vibrancy of Fedrigoni’s 80% recycled range, Woodstock. The 2021 edition was Fedrigoni’s most inclusive yet, showcasing the work of almost 1,000 contributors through the power of digital printing technology. The calendar enabled Fedrigoni to engage with more of the creative community than ever before, reaching its highest ever print circulation and seeing engagement increase by over 165% since 2019. All profits from previous editions have been donated to charity, so far raising over £20,000. Fedrigoni is set to launch the Fedrigoni 365 2022 in November this year. www.fedrigoni.co.uk

VIVID LAMINATING TECHNOLOGIES
EASYPRINT: OUR VIVID EXPERIENCE
STAYING AT THE TOP OF OUR GAME
Kettering-based Eazyprint is family run business that prides itself on producing award-winning work that wows its growing portfolio of clients.
V
ivid Laminating Technologies’ Tiah Hallam asked them to share their experience of partnering with the post press kit supplier and what their latest Vivid investments brought to their business Tell us a little bit about your company. The company started trading in June 2010, so we have just celebrated our 11th birthday. I suppose you could say we started as just your everyday digital printer, offering everything and largely competing on price, even to the point of selling business cards and trying to compete with the online prices and as a result generally making a small profit, or even running some jobs as a loss leader to get a foot in the door with potential clients. But that all started to change in 2015, when we purchased our first foiling machine. In fact, we were one of the first digital printers to enter the digital foiling market. Initially we found it hard to get the right results and spent months approving materials that we could use and perfecting the process before we really started to push this as a service. Since then we have won multiple awards and gone from strength to strength. This led us down the route of packaging, and specialising in short-run personalised packaging and marketing pieces. So, what led you to start looking for a new cutting system? Our previous machine, a flatbed cutter, had served us well for the past few years, but was starting to look a little slow compared to newer machines and had a number of limitations, including accuracy. So, we started to research the market with a view to purchasing a new machine. We approached the team at Vivid for their advice and they mentioned they were going to introduce their own cutting machine. As they were already a trusted supplier, we were very keen to see their offering and we were not disappointed! The Veloblade range came in at a good price point, was unique, dynamic, and ticked all the boxes for us. You mentioned that you researched the market though, so what led you to decide to invest in a Vivid system? Our production director, Daniel Pretot, heads up our R&D team and works very closely with both our design team and our suppliers to enable us to push the limits of what we can do and 20
offer, something that is very important to us as a business. We had been working closely with Vivid for a few years and loved that they wanted to work closely with us, sharing information and requesting honest feedback, which in turn helps them offer better products and service. That was partly why we purchased our Matrix Duplex laminator a couple of years ago, which came with a special modification built just for us. And as a result of that positive experience we were confident about investing in their technology again and have now taken delivery of our latest machine from Vivid, the VeloBlade Volta. And that confidence has been rewarded, because our new VeloBlade Volta has enabled us to take adding value to an all new level in terms of creative finishing. Is the added value aspect your favourite feature? That and its speed and precision, which is the best we have seen. What about your favourite effect it offers? As specialists in printed packaging and promotional items, we offer clients a way to promote their brand and goods in high quality custom boxes, box sleeves, bespoke packaging, and promotional items. We also specialise in book and manual production, with a vast array of high quality binding options from case bound and softback books to saddle stitched and spiral bound books. Whatever we produce though, we’re a true partner of our customers as they trust our experiencem based advice when it comes seeking luxury finishes and embellishments. And embellishment is huge for us, whether it be a book cover or a box. We use all manner of coloured foils, sometimes using up to four different colours
and effects on one piece. We are now also using the holographic foils more and more and there seems to be a big call for these. With the huge array of added value features we can offer through our range of special finishing and personalisation services, we can truly make something unique and magical and that is a world away from the early days when our goal was to be the cheapest, now it’s all about being the best. Both the Matrix Duplex and the Veloblade Volta give us all the tools we need to make sure we can stay at the top of our game and ensure we can offer the best possible solutions to our customers. And what about Vivid as a company, would you recommend them as a partner? We have not looked back since we started working with Vivid; they listen and stay in touch on a regular basis. Other machine suppliers make all sorts of promises but never follow up or deliver on them but Vivid do and that is what we love about our relationship with them. More importantly is how a machine supplier performs when something is not right or goes wrong, and to date we can’t fault Vivid and their team of engineers. www.vivid-online.com

MIMAKI 3DUJ-553
THE ART OF PRINTING PROTEIN MODELS
Biologic Models, a US-based 3D printed protein model and medical animation provider, is using Mimaki’s 3D printing technology to produce intricate molecular visualisation models bringing protein into the tangible world in incredible detail.
B
iologic Models, alongwith another canadian-based Mimaki customer, Objex Unlimited, the two have successfully embarked on multiple projects for clients in education, research, and art using Mimaki’s full colour 3D printer, the 3DUJ-553. Most recently, Biologic Models and Objex Unlimited have produced models of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) to help with the rapid development of countermeasures to address the ongoing outbreak. Biologic Models has carved out a niche in creating precise 3D models of proteins for research facilities and collectors using clinical research and x-ray crystallography protein data. Initially working in powder based 3D printing, the company found that printing with a photopolymer based 3D materials was a more suitable option. Notably this process offered durability, detail, and quick turnarounds, alongside a colour gamut 10x that of what is available with powder based 3D printing. Another draw is how these prints, unlike sandstone, can be easily cleaned with a wet cloth, a necessary attribute in a post COVID world for Biologic Model customers when displaying such items in exhibits. Last year, Biologic Models collaborated with Objex Unlimited to print its Collection of SARS-Cov-2 models with enhanced colour accuracy and varying degrees of transparency and opacity using the Mimaki 3DUJ-553. “What drew me to Mimaki’s technology was its ability to simultaneously mix clear and colour in order to achieve different levels of transparency, and more easily display the internal changes 22
within a protein,” Casey Steffen, Director of Operations, Biologic Models comments. “With our upcoming coronavirus models, we’re tracking individual mutations on a ribbon model of the Spike Protein’s Receptor Binding Domain and assigning each new mutation a unique colour. Viewers can learn about how the structure of the virus changes observing both the accumulation of coloured residues and changes to the transparent intermolecular bonds. The intricate detail that we can achieve in a single print is amazing, working with Objex Unlimited has really opened my eyes to how 3D printing can create a more meaningful, accurate scientific model for our customers.” Using the 3DUJ-553’s 10 million colour capability, Biologic Models’ protein replicas are distinctly coloured to make biomedical research clearer and more identifiable to the viewer. 3D printing a tiny protein could include 10,000 or more individual atoms. This requires a level of detail that is easily achievable with the accuracy delivered with Mimaki’s 3D printing technology. Thanks to its multi-coloured printing accuracy, Biologic Models bridge the gap between physical and digital, including QR codes that lead to dedicated webpages that are readable at even the smallest 3D printed sizes. “Mimaki 3D prints facilitate both a physical and digital learning experience that was often unachievable because of the limitations of powder based printing,” Steffen comments. “In fact, a new series of ‘Mechanismof-Action’ protein models is set to begin releasing later this summer. This series of 3D printed models integrates AR experiences that allow
viewers to digitally explore the protein data used to create the 3D printed protein model. Exclusive to these Mimaki 3D prints is a never before seen molecular animation that visualises how the Spike Glycoprotein changes shape during infection.” “The level of accuracy and detail that we incorporate into these models requires a 3D printing technology that produces strong and durable parts. It also has to be easy to use, quick to print, and produce cost effective models for customers that only need one off products or visualisations — a crucial advantage for many of Biologic Models’ customers who work on research projects that may soon evolve or need to be updated,” Steve Corey, President, Objex Unlimited concluded. “Mimaki’s 3D printing technology offers the flexibility to realise the most complex molecular structures with ease and incredible accuracy, enabling us to produce models that support even the most high profile and demanding research projects.” Biologic Models and Objex Unlimited are currently debuting the brand new SARS-COV-2 Virion model, which includes the latest research about the virus structure and function. The duo has collaborated to ensure the entire SARSCoV-2 Collection fits inside the new desktop printer. This maximises the cost effectiveness of each model Biologic Model. Customers. SHOWTIME
PRINT TRADE EXPO
PERPETUAL PRINT SHOW ANNIVERSARY Amazingly it was this time last year when the PTE show opened. The 247/365 print trade show organised by printers for printers. Print Trade Expo was born out of the ongoing cancellation of print industry shows, Covid travel restrictions, general safety confidence and on the brighter side our QPP readers genuine thirst for news of new products and services. We researched 3D augmented reality platforms, paper plane exhibition hall fly throughs and concluded; although these are a great showpiece for web design and gaming enthused players, that for us grounded print people the navigation experience had to be mastered to steer from stand to stand. Busy print personnel require a fewest clicks possible show scenario.

ANTALIS JOINS RECONOMY Antalis and Reconomy’s new alliance is designed to support customers with managing their waste in the most responsible way possible. Working alongside partner Reconomy, Antalis offer a coherent, knowledge based approach to waste and recycling, engaging the whole supply chain. The joint service approach can help customers access current waste management practices, get advice on reducing waste and making more sustainable product choices, as well as receive proposals about how to manage their waste more effectively — whilst saving time and money. With a network of over 150 recycling contractors, Reconomy is a market leading provider of outsourced recycling and resource management services and is an expert in managing waste from the print industry. They co-ordinate more than 12,000 waste movements every week and annually manage approximately 3m tonnes of waste. Chris Green, Director of Visual Communications at Antalis UK says: “The Antalis and Reconomy partnership is designed to support our customers with managing their waste in the most responsible way possible, and the services Reconomy offer are certified by BPIF and endorsed by BOSS Federation. With consumer focus firmly fixed on the ecological effects of waste, brand owners are recognising the higher demand for more environmental practices. This is
impacting directly on supply chain choices, and as an industry we also need to promote and reinforce change to ensure it is implemented.” The joint initiative aims to promote not only 100% environmental accountability on behalf of the print industry, but to advise and offer alternative substrate choices based on environmental impact. Chris from Antalis says: “Printers inherently like to control their waste streams, especially where there is revenue involved. This practice, however, can take valuable resources away from the core activities of the business. Outsourcing this service allows our customers to put waste management in the hands of industry experts that you can trust and ensures the best environmental solution in handling different types of material waste.” www.reconomy.com • contact@antalis.co.uk
PAPER INDUSTRY ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION PROBLEM
recycling rate is currently 72%, with paper packaging even higher at 84%. • In 2019, a total of 57.5 million tonnes of paper was collected and recycled in Europe. • 18-24 year olds have the biggest misconception relating to recycling, with just 12% believing the paper recycling rate exceeds 60%. • 66% of consumers think only recycled paper should be used.
PAPER VS ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION
Two Sides’ latest study ‘Paper’s Place in a PostPandemic World’ aims to understand changing consumer perceptions towards print, paper, paper packaging and tissue products. This unique insight into consumer attitudes towards one of the world’s oldest and universally used materials will be repeated biennially to monitor and report upon evolving consumer perceptions as environmental awareness intensifies and alternative digital channels of communication become prevalent. Results of the 2021 study show that, whilst paper retains its place as a vital communication and packaging materials, there remain misconceptions about the environmental impact of the paper industry.
are shrinking. In reality, between 2005 and 2020, European forests grew by an impressive 58,390km2 – an area larger than Switzerland and equivalent to 1,500 football pitches of forest growth every day. Other findings from the survey relating to forest growth include: • Just 9% of UK consumers understand that European forests are growing. • 18-24 year olds (Gen Z) have the highest belief that forests are shrinking (69%). • Although more people believe forests are growing (9% compared to 4% in 2013), there is still a significant gap in understanding.
CONSUMERS ARE NOT AWARE THAT EUROPEAN FORESTS ARE GROWING
Another common misconception about the paper industry is the amount of paper that’s recycled. The survey found that just 17% of UK consumers believe the paper recycling rate exceeds 60%. Furthermore, 46% believe that paper and paper packaging is wasteful. In reality, Europe’s paper

THE HIGH RECYCLING RATES FOR PAPER AND PAPER PACKAGING ARE NOT APPRECIATED
The past year has accelerated the growth of electronic communication, with meetings, events and day to day business increasingly being conducted online and consumers relying more on online news. While convenience and the ability for people to work at home are undoubtedly key drivers in this shift, the environmental impact of digital communications is often overlooked. Paper and print products are among the lowest greenhouse gas emitters at 0.8% whereas, the ICT industry accounts for 2.5-3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and this is predicted to rise to 14% by 2040. Despite this, 66% of consumers surveyed in our report think electronic communication is more environmentally friendly than paper communication. “This report shows there are many environmental misconceptions surrounding print and paper products,” says Jonathan Tame, Managing Director of Two Sides Europe. “Many consumers believe that European forests are shrinking in size, massively underestimate the paper recycling rate, and do not understand the sustainable nature of paper products. These misunderstandings make the work we do with Two Sides and Love Paper even more vital.” www.twosides.info

FIVE REASONS TO ADOPT DYE SUBLIMATION
and photo gifting market. Many businesses will easily be able to target existing clients with new products and services to further enhance their value as a print supplier and target new business.
3 RESPONSIVE ON DEMAND PRODUCTION
Adapting to an on-demand business model allows much greater control of production in terms of time, quality, cost, and waste. It also responds to the growing market for the printing of original and unique images and designs. Print what you need, when you need it rather than sitting on printed stock and take on those small but profitable jobs.
4 EASE OF ADOPTION
Tom Owers Pro Graphics Manager at Epson UK offers five reasons quick print pros should consider adding dye sublimation capabilities.
1 MAXIMISING GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
With just 6% of the world’s printed textiles produced digitally and an increasing demand for personalised goods there is a great opportunity for growth. Interest has been accelerated by the impact the pandemic has had on supply chains. Many companies are considering how reshoring can improve their practices or adapting to an on-demand business model where users print what they have sold. This helps to reduce reliance on waste going into landfill or being sent abroad. Epson is encouraging producers that were previously printing textiles abroad and finishing closer to home, to keep manufacturing local.
2 PRODUCTION FLEXIBILITY FOR A BROADER OFFERING Adding dye sublimation enables PSP’s to expand their production capabilities and target a variety of applications such as fashion, sportswear, home textiles, décor and soft signage, as well as rigid substrates aimed promotional goods
Dye sublimation printing is a very straightforward process, and any large format printer will easily be able to adapt their production with just a few additions in their workflow. Epson entry level dye sublimation printers are ideal for start-ups and small business as you don’t need any specialist skills or knowledge to set up, operate or maintain them. Investment cost are low, and the technology is easily scalable as your business grows.
5 REASSURING RELIABILITY
As with any commercial grade hardware you should look to invest in something that will deliver quality, consistency and reliability, as this will allow you to be competitive when entering a new market. The latest dye sublimation solutions in our growing portfolio, that ranges from entry to industrial level, include Epson’s first A4 dye sublimation printer, the SureColor SC-F100. It was developed for small businesses and start-ups looking to expand their product offering into the promotional goods sector when space is at premium. Also joining the portfolio in 2020 was the 255sqm/ hr SureColor SC-F10000 76in wide-format printer. It was designed for high productivity, speed, and reliability. It is suited to the production of fashion, sportswear, home furnishings, promotional goods, and soft signage. www.epson.co.uk

ACA AND TASKFORCE SIGN TRADE SERVICE
Bridging the Glasgow Edinburgh divide, two trade finishers have signed a joint venture that will enhance business for both. ACA will pass saddlestitching, binding and pharmaceutical folding work to Taskforce in future while Taskforce will place work with ACA that needs enhancing services including UV varnishing and foiling. Dara Changizi, director of ACA in Glasgow, says: “During the pandemic, ACA has moved further into the packaging sector and invested in die-cutting, die-making and folder gluing. We still have a strong base of commercial printers working with us and we will continue to offer many specialist finishes, not least
laminating, coating and varnishing, embossing and debossing and wire binding. However, it makes sense for us to use Taskforce for the stitching and binding work. We are just 60 miles apart and, with our own fleet of vehicles, we can collect or deliver quickly and speedily.” Alex Porteous, managing director of Taskforce, says: “We heard that ACA were selling a binding line and so it made sense to talk. In fact we had recently bought a 12 station Muller Martini Pantera which has quick set up, is compact and can change easily from hot melt to PUR. The surprise for us and ACA is that we haven’t talked before this; it’s a very good fit.” Both companies remain entirely financially independent and are finding trade bouncing back after the Covid lockdowns. There is no transfer of equipment or thought of a buyout. ACA was founded in the 1980s but it was only five years ago that it was the subject of a £6.5m management buyout, backed by Royal Bank of Scotland. This has brought new vision and an emphasis on investment in equipment, people and service. Taskforce was set up in 1990 with three staff when it discovered a gap in trade finishing services in Edinburgh. Today it employs 28 staff. It offers machine and hand finishing services as well as mailing and distribution. Both companies agree that each will ultimately be responsible to their customers to ensure the quality and delivery is right. Their customers will gain from a wider portfolio of services but no change in established communications and service levels. SIGN UP SYSTEMS INVEST IN GENESIS V CUTTER Nottingham based Sign Up Systems has invested in a Blackman & White Genesis V flatbed digital cutting system from i-Sub as it looks to speed up its finishing process, diversify its work and produce new products. The company, which started out providing aluminium systems for the signage and graphics industry, first diversified into print in 2016 when it invested in a dye-sublimation machine and a 3.2m UV roll to roll system. A few years later it installed further large format printing equipment; a move which opened up a host of potential new avenues, but also left the company needing to upgrade its finishing options. “Finishing was definitely the bottleneck in our business,” explains Sign Up Systems’ Managing Director Jon Bromhead. “We could print a lot of work; we just couldn’t finish it. We realised that what we needed was that missing link — and, as it turned out, that was the Blackman & White Genesis V cutter.” Jon Bromhead and his team were initially in the market for a used cutting machine, but quickly realised that only a new one would meet their needs. Then followed a conversation with the UK Blackman and White graphics’ distributor i-Sub and it was quickly confirmed that the Genesis V system would provide the best option. A subsequent demonstration on the system with Emma Plant at i-Sub confirmed the Blackman and White Genesis V was the best solution and offered everything and more Sign Up Systems required, allowing for further growth and opportunity. Jon Bromhead states: “Due to the pandemic, we felt it was better to go with a machine manufactured in the UK. It offered a better price point too, so seemed to be the right fit for us. We put the machine through its paces before we purchased it, running some tests using different substrates and cutting tools. We were happy with the results and decided to go for it!” Sign Up Systems already had a relationship with i-Sub, having purchased a dye-sublimation machine from the company in 2019. “i-Sub has always been really helpful, and we knew that we would get really good service from them,” adds Jon Bromhead. Following installation, Emma Plant, Sales Director at i-Sub, commented: “We were delighted that Sign Up Systems invited i-Sub to work with them and guide them to the best solution for their new finishing requirements. They are a very forward thinking business. This was demonstrated by their decision to invest in new technology to grow the business and ensure their client’s needs
30
were met whilst offering the best quality products and service available. “The Blackman and White cutter also offers peace of mind for future growth as the machine has the capacity for further production volume, ensuring Sign Up Systems not only has the confidence to take on more business and win new work now, but also to adapt to the changing needs of its customers in the future.” The Genesis V, which arrived in Nottingham in early June 2021, has a maximum cutting speed of 1200mm/sec and can cope with materials up to 50mm thick. Tool options allow cutting, creasing, routing, v-cutting and cardboard engineering which enables Sign Up Systems to finish packaging and marketing materials as well as branded workwear for staff. Jon Bromhead explains: “It allows us to offer much more when it comes to print as finishing is key to the final product. It gives us a bigger product range and helps us to diversify as well as allowing us to finish and produce a lot more products in-house. “Rigid board, banner, paper, vinyl, fluted board, display card, textile, composite materials finishing and more mean we can now look into completely different areas that we couldn’t even consider before; there are so many possibilities, we’ve only just scratched the surface of what it can do.” www.i-sub.co.uk

THE JOKE’S ON YOU
READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE? EX-SALESMAN QUITS AS TAXI DRIVER
Why did the salesman give up being a taxi driver? There was too much talking behind his back.
THE TAXI DRIVER’S RIDDLE
A salesman goes on a business trip to Liverpool during the course of which he has to make a long journey by taxi. During the journey, the driver decides to break the monotony and says to the man, “Do you like riddles?” “Oh yes,” says the salesman, “I think so.” “OK,” says the taxi driver. “Try this one: ‘Brothers and sisters have I none, but this man’s father is my father’s son.’ Who is it?” The salesman tries to work out the puzzle but, in the end, says, “No. It’s no good. I can’t do it. Who is it?” “It’s me!” says the taxi driver. “Think about it!” “Oh yes!” says the salesman. “Very good!” The rest of the journey passed in silence. A few days later the salesman is back at work again where he decides to try the riddle out on a friend. “Do you like riddles?” he asks his friend. “Oh yes!” says the friend. “Right!” says the man. “Try this one: ‘Brothers and sisters have I none, but this man’s father is my father’s son.’ Who is it?” The friend thinks and thinks and, in the end, says: “No. it’s no good. I can’t get it.” “Ha! It’s easy!” says the man. “It’s a taxi driver from Liverpool!”
GIFTING
At my friends’ wedding reception, the groom stood to say a few words. He turned to his bride’s mother. “You’ve given me a gift,” he began, “a gift that...” Here he paused in thought, whereupon his mother-in-law completed the sentence, “That you can’t return!”
said: “You all need to start clapping!” “Strange,” I thought. Anyway, we all started to clap and the lights came on! I said: “How did that happen?” He replied: “Old Chinese proverb, many hands make light work.”

ADOPTION OBJECTIONS
Why did the book binder go to the chiropractor? To get her spine fixed!
MEN MAKE BETTER FRIENDS
Women’s Friends: A woman didn’t come home one night. The next day she told her husband that she had slept over at a friend’s house. The husband called his wife’s ten best friends. None of them had seen her or knew what he was talking about. Men’s Friends: A man didn’t come home one night. The next day he told his wife that he had slept over at a friend’s house. The wife called her husband’s 10 best friends. Eight of them confirmed that he had slept over, and two claimed that he was still there.
HAPPY DOG
I Googled ‘lost medieval servant boy’. The result was ‘This page cannot be found.’
A man running a little behind schedule arrives at the cinema, goes in to watch the movie that has already started, and as his eyes adjust to the darkness, he is surprised to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead, intently watching the movie. It even seemed to be enjoying the movie, wagging its tail in the happy bits, drooping its ears at the sad bits, and hiding its eyes with its paws at the scary bits. After the movie, the man approaches the dog’s owner, “Wow, your dog really seemed to enjoy the movie. I’m amazed!” “Yes, I can’t believe it myself,” came the reply. “He hated the book.”

a Sea Monster Diet?
A couple who work at the circus go to an adoption agency. Social workers there raise doubts about their suitability. The couple produce photos of their 50-foot motorhome, which is equipped with a beautiful nursery. The social workers then are doubtful about the education that the child would get. “We’ve arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin and computer skills.” Then there are doubts about raising a child in a circus environment. “Our nanny is an expert in paediatric welfare and diet.” The social workers are finally satisfied. They ask, “What age child are you hoping to adopt?” “It doesn’t really matter, as long as he or she fits in the cannon.”
THE FORGETFUL ACTOR
An actor had been out of work for years because he always forgot his lines. One day he got a phone call from a director who wanted him for an important part in a play. All the actor had to say was, “Hark! I hear the cannon roar!” Opening night arrived, and while he waited in the wings, the actor muttered to himself, “Hark! I hear the cannon roar! Hark! I hear the cannon roar!” The time for the entrance finally came. As the actor made his appearance onstage, he heard a loud BOOOOM! He turned around and said, “WTF was that?”
PASSWORD RESET
I’ve just reset my password and changed it to DelicateLuggageHandler. I was told it had to be casesensitive.
What do sea monsters eat?
