Why were NEXT in the market for a new system?
NEXT, a multinational retailer specialising in clothing, footwear, and home products, is headquartered in Enderby, England. With approximately 700 stores in its portfolio, approximately 500 are located in the United Kingdom, while the remaining 200 are spread across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
NEXT in-house print department sought a new system, purely for their own signage needs. Their previous cutting system, resulted in extended waiting times for support. However, since partnering with Vivid, they have been thrilled with the support they’ve received, giving it a resounding five star rating.
Stephen Clarke said, “Vivid’s support is truly deserving of a five-star rating; they consistently go above and beyond to ensure we have the best support when operating the Veloblade Nexus and Zip Core Packaging Suite. This level of support is truly invaluable to us.
“Since partnering with Vivid, our experience has been nothing short of fantastic. The Zip Core Packaging Suite opens up endless possibilities, and the ability to send a 3D Virtual CAD of a project, rather than creating a physical sample, has saved us an incredible amount of time. The Veloblade Nexus has demonstrated its precision, speed, and clean-cut performance,
surpassing all our previous experiences with other brands. This has given us the confidence to take full control of in-house production.”
Now equipped with the Veloblade Nexus and Zip Core Packaging Suite, NEXT has unlocked a world of possibilities. This cutting edge technology has empowered them to take full control of in-house production with unwavering confidence, assured of the systems’ dependability, precision, and the unwavering support they provide.
This transformative shift has proven to be more than just a time saver; it has also delivered substantial cost savings, a pivotal achievement that has left a significant impact on the organisation.
Vivid extends its gratitude to Ricoh, one of their valued resellers, for their instrumental role in making this sale possible.
Ricoh has been a long standing technology
partner to NEXT, supporting them on innovative workflow and process improvement in their warehousing and storeroom functions. In addition to this Ricoh has provided NEXT with a complete graphic wide format and cut sheet print and finishing technology, to further enhance their operations. To complement the solution and provide a true production workflow system, Ricoh chose Vivid, its trusted Partner, and their Veloblade Nexus and Zip Core Packaging Suite to work alongside Ricoh Latex and UV Flatbed technologies. The system had to be operable over three shifts, be easy to use, cut various materials involving routing and most of all be reliable. The Veloblade Nexus meets all these criteria and with the technical support of Vivid, applications can easily be prototyped and bought to production in a matter of hours.

NPC Print Upgrades With Morgana Booklet Maker
NPC Print, Mytchett, near Camberley, Surrey, has upgraded its booklet making capability with the purchase of a Morgana BM4035. The new finishing device replaces a previous Morgana booklet maker. The BM4035 expands the range of sizes and formats that can be produced.
The Morgana BM4035 represents the latest style of booklet maker in the supplier’s range. The product can produce A6 to A4 portrait publications, as well as A4 landscape and large format 297mm x 297mm books. It also has the ability to corner and edge staple as standard.
NPC Print founder and CEO, Natalie Puttock, commenting on this latest purchase, said: “We needed to expand the range of formats that we could produce. Most importantly, the ability to produce long sheets, such as A4 landscape products, a format that has become increasingly popular in recent years — jobs that we have had to send out for finishing. The ability of the new BM4035 to produce this format in-house will give us control of that work, as well as saving us money on outwork.
“Having recently taken the decision to upgrade our digital print device to a new Konica Minolta AccurioPress C4070 engine, the new binder will help us to show off both our print and in-house finishing capabilities to the fullest. The square-back capability of the binder is a feature that we can also promote for higher pagination publications — it gives the impression of a perfect bound book.
“The binder will initially be manually fed, but as print quantities
increase, we know that we can easily add an automated feeder on to the unit for higher productivity.”
The company currently utilise other Morgana products in its post-press section, including a Morgana AutoCreaser, and an Intec ColourFlare device for foiling and laminating, purchased through Morgana.
The Morgana BM4035 is a versatile booklet maker designed to work with low to mid volume digital production printers. It delivers booklets of exceptional quality and is able to feed long printed sheets to produce a wide variety of applications, including A4 landscape booklets, which are becoming an increasingly important expectation of customers.
The BM4000 Series uses the latest patented Plockmatic technologies to deliver top quality output. The base unit folds and staples booklets, and also provides for corner or edge stapled. It can produce up to 140 pages (35 sheets with the BM4035) or 200 pages (50 sheets with the BM4050). The set positioning mechanism enables the operator to easily adjust the staple and fold position on the fly. Corner or edge stapling is a fast and simple solution, typically used for producing meeting notes, reference documents, or hard copies of PowerPoint presentations.
The heavy-duty staple mechanism is designed for durability, as is maintenance free thanks to a patented solution that eliminates periodic service intervals. Staples are delivered via an easy to change staple cartridge.

FuturePrint invest in Horizon Folder Creaser
FuturePrint has chosen a Horizon CRF-362 folder creaser from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS) to ensure its operations remain smooth and streamlined.
The Northampton, third generation family run, general commercial printer produces a wide range of print from leaflets to bespoke packaging. It prints litho on a B2 Sakurai press and digital on Xerox 4100 and Xerox 3100 presses.
Darren Wrighting, Managing Director, explains the investment: “It was a straight replacement for a creaser folder we already had. That was something we had replaced 18 months before, but it was not as good as our previous one. We needed a solution that would complete the work as smoothly as possible.”
FuturePrint already runs a Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker and Petratto folder gluer supplied by IFS. Darren was impressed with the build of the systems and quality they produced. So much so, that when he spoke to IFS about the options for his latest investment, he made the decision to invest immediately.
He continues: “I didn’t even look at the Horizon CRF-362 folder creaser. We were told what it would do and because we already have systems from IFS we knew we could trust that it would. And it does. It is a great bit of kit. It is solid and gives us versatility. Our operators are happy too. They are confident in what can be

Set-up and changeovers — including fold pattern, creasing number, and up/down crease selection — are completed on the high resolution intuitive colour touch screen.
As for working with IFS Darren says: “There is nothing else I need, but if there was, I would be buying it from IFS.”

Sharp has announced the launch of two new Pro Series MFPs, designed to meet the evolving needs of on-demand light production printing. The new models, BP-90C80 and BP-90C70, offer a solution for entry level light production printing at a reduced cost, with higher printing capabilities, high quality precise printing and improved productivity for heavier weight media.

The new models also offer increased productivity across a range of heavier paper weights, with engine speeds operating at 100% efficiency all the way up to 220gsm. The BP-90C70 offers printing at 70/75 ppm colour/BW, with the BP-90C80 operating at 80/80 ppm colour/BW. Additionally, full bleed booklets and brochures are supported with optional trimming; stapling and hole punching; page insertion, and different folds. A range of paper types are also accounted for, with coated, uncoated and textured stock supported from the input tray through to a choice of finishing systems.

Sharp customers will quickly see the Fiery advantage with tools to intelligently automate job preparation, ensure accurate colours and plan daily production schedules to guarantee print operations run smoothly and at maximum capacity.”

To support today’s interconnected workforce, the models can be integrated into Microsoft Teams or Gmail through a native connector, meaning employees can easily print from and scan documents to their email, Teams channels and folders. A modular design allows for a range of configurations, including an option to increase paper supply up to 13,500 sheets, preparing users for uninterrupted printing at maximum productivity.
CREDIBLY SUSTAINABLE
The BP-90C80 and BP-90C70 offer lower energy consumption rates across its toner and scan technology, achieving Blue Angel certification. In addition, Sharp also uses fully recyclable materials for packaging, and long life consumable parts.

New Canon imagePROGRAF PRO Series
Canon launches a new enhanced series of its highly successful 12-colour imagePROGRAF PRO large format printers. Designed for the photography and fine art markets, the new series comprises three models: the 60”/1524mm imagePROGRAF PRO-6600, the 44”/1118mm PRO-4600 and the 24”/610mm PRO-2600, which replace the imagePROGRAF PRO6100, PRO-4100 and PRO-2100 respectively. Combined with a new pigment ink set, LUCIA PRO Il, the new 12-colour series delivers the highest photo print quality of any imagePROGRAF yet. The launch of the new series addresses market demand for greater image durability and light resistance to help increase long term print storage, and offers new environmental benefits. The imagePROGRAF PRO series will be showcased live at drupa 2024.
EXCEPTIONAL IMAGE QUALITY
While the 12-colour imagePROGRAF PRO was already renowned for producing photo quality prints with stunning, vivid colour and unsurpassed clarity and detail, the matte black ink in the LUCIA PRO II ink set together with a newly designed colour matching table has improved the reproduction of darker shades and the black density on fine art papers. On the same media types, this development has also expanded the dark areas of the colour gamut to render detailed shades of grey.
SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED DURABILITY
The LUCIA PRO II ink set also allows users to future proof their printed output as the new inks provide substantially improved scratch resistance on photographic papers, to make handling, mounting and finishing easier, such as for fine art printers (PSPs), while a very light resistant pigment in the ink set dramatically increases colour fastness. Enhancing their value, photographic and fine art prints can therefore now be produced in even higher quality with the new imagePROGRAF PRO
series and then preserved for up to 200 years without the colours fading.
PRODUCTIVITY BOOST
Regardless of the skill or experience of the user, the new imagePROGRAF PRO series is easy to use and offers increased productivity, thanks to its ink ejection status monitoring system, simplified settings and easier media handling. Its dual roll capability allows a second roll of a different media type and size to be loaded at the same time so that the user can
automatically switch from printing on matte to gloss paper without interrupting the workflow. By accelerating the automatic media feeding process, the media loading time has also been reduced by approximately 40%.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
In line with Canon’s goal of reducing the environmental footprint of its products and operations by using resources responsibly, minimising waste, increasing efficiency and
supporting innovation, it has reduced the amount of expanded polystyrene packaging material used for the new imagePROGRAF PRO series — for example, 89.5% less polystyrene foam is used for the PRO-4600 than for its predecessor. In addition, its reduced power consumption — using 85W or less during operation and 2.3W or less during standby as well as other satisfied criteria, has helped the series achieve a ‘Gold’ product rating under the U.S. EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) Registry, the highest level of registration in the field of imaging equipment products.
Mathew Faulkner, EMEA Director, Marketing and Innovation, Wide Format Printing Group, Canon Europe, comments: “The new imagePROGRAF PRO series takes the resounding success of our current range and makes it even better, with new design and performance features added in response to feedback from our customers. We’ve raised the bar for print quality as well as significantly increasing image robustness in terms of light and abrasion resistance, which is crucial for fine art printers and professional photographers. With its improved media handling and increased automation, we’ve also made it easier to use and more productive.
“The new imagePROGRAF PRO series makes an attractive proposition for our customers professional photographers can invest in technology that allows them to further commercialise their work through print, while maintaining full control of the output and quality of their work.”
The new imagePROGRAF PRO series is available from March 2024 across EMEA either directly from Canon or through one of its accredited resellers.

Back down to earth
Regular readers may have spotted that Martin Christie is not a huge fan of Elon Musk, or at least some of his more ambitious schemes and pronouncements. The rocket man may have his head in the stars, but whether he always has his feet on the ground is another matter.
The vision of mankind colonising other planets is undoubtedly exciting, but the reality may depend rather more on our sustainable use of the resources on the one we already have. The history of colonisation, after all, does not have too many positive lessons. But then his CV would tend to suggest Musk is not an avid student of the past.
After all, he may be wealthy enough not to need to work, but for us mortals, the concept that we won’t have to because intelligent machines will do everything for us is more than fanciful; it’s positively insane. I am old enough to have lived and worked in a world without computers, and yes, life was actually possible without their help. Many tasks were more difficult and time-consuming, for sure. Still, as a result, you had to think things through, consider consequences and predict results — all very human qualities that have enabled us as a species to progress from simply banging rocks together to make fire.
There was a time when I thought I could retire without having to deal with anything more digital than a calculator and a watch. Still, that time is gone, along with all the leisure time I was promised would be a direct benefit of the electronic revolution. So, having shared working practice with both the old and the new order, I think I am in a pretty good position to comment rather than those who have only experienced the latter.
As both a photographer and printer, digital is obviously a massive aid and can do things that were never possible before. But to go from that to believing that you can sit back and rest in a comfy chair while it does everything for you is one massive leap into a very dark space. Artificial Intelligence is just that, something created by human intervention, and it’s worth remembering that the adjective is also used to describe something fake. And while perceptive humans may spot a fake, AI will not because, to its brain, the reproduction is just as real as we are.
Without going into a philosophical discussion on reality, there is a very good
reason for me to reflect on these points in this column, which may become clearer if you haven’t dozed off already.
We started the New Year with a move. If you read last month’s truncated column, it’s a very disruptive process for any business. But on top of that, the last few months have seen some staff changes, and the challenge of not only finding suitable candidates but bringing what skills they have up to speed with practice in the print-on-demand workspace. As you know, experienced staff are hard to find as the job requires a combination of more complicated skills than general retail. The challenge of dealing with general customers over the counter, on the phone, or by email exchange is one thing. Combine that with the software knowledge of handling digital files and the hardware complexities of modern printers, and you have a task on your hands.
It’s the dilemma of the digital age that so often, people who are good with computers are not very good with people, and vice versa. It may be an oversimplification, but there is definitely something different in the interaction between people and machines. On balance, it’s probably better to find people who are good with people, as at least you are likely to keep your customers.
Teaching people with only a basic understanding of computers is a lot easier than teaching those with no empathy with even more complex and unpredictable humans. But it is a challenge nevertheless, partly because most people interact with computers in one form or another now on a daily basis and rely on them being accurate in giving them the information they want. So much so that they don’t even question it. It is real. Or at least it is till they discover it isn’t — which may take some time and take even longer to resolve.
EVERY KEYSTROKE COUNTS
In our business, we don’t have that time; people are impatient, deadlines are ever tighter, and the customer assumes that what he has given you is ready to print
and correct in numbers and quantity. Our default mode has to be suspicion. Don’t trust what you see without checking it, and even if you know it’s a regular customer, they may have made a mistake typing a hasty email — something that is very easy to do on a tiny phone pad rather than a proper full-sized keyboard where you can look at the letters and not be egged on by predictive text. Putting a 0 after an A instead of a 4, for example, makes a rather large difference in size, as does adding a few to a number to make up a quantity.
People rarely carefully check what they have written before sending it, and even if they have used spell check, it won’t correct a proper word, even if the sentence doesn’t make sense. Now, AI may get better at understanding meaning and context, but will it really decide whether you want to order a thousand sheets rather than a hundred, or will it just block you because you’ve only ever had ten before? A polite human intervention would be more appropriate to resolve the question.
Apart from obvious mistakes, there are hidden ones deep inside the digital codes that are part of the electronic transfer of images and information. We all know Word documents don’t translate exactly as they appear to the sender when received on another computer, but that’s a basic error. At the heart of it is the assumption on the part of the user that what they see in front of them is real and not, in fact, a sequence of binary equations that only makes sense to a compatible computer.
This has become more critical as the direct result of using AI to produce more user-friendly apps so that the average person can instantly do things that would otherwise require an expert. Unfortunately this also means that it may require the skill of an expert to untangle the resulting digital jumble to be usable. Though it’s no longer popular culture in what Adobe proudly hailed ‘Creative Democracy’ recently, it is important to understand the process that gets to a result rather than just leap to it, even if
14 | MARCH 2024 QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK Pixel Prophet
it is more convenient and time-saving. It may not be significant for the majority of items shared purely in visual terms on social media and blogs, for example, but to print, we need to expand that illusion into something real.
Adobe has been caught very much in the middle of this dilemma; as one of the original leading design software developers, they have had to react to the marketplace and compete with products to match some of the quick-fix options available to the general public. There are some very good ones out there, as well as the more obvious gimmicks. The problem for the professional user is having the capability to tackle any possible task, not just the easy ones.
And while I always stress that other programs are available, it’s hard not to compare them with the industry standard, which has such a comprehensive selection of options for the experienced user.
I often compare it to a tool kit — the simple kind you may have in the boot of the car, or a kitchen drawer. It’s perfectly fine for most simple tasks. But as a tradesman, you want to be sure you have every type of tool you might need for your trade on a call-out and not just be tackling a job with a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Of course, you still need to know how to use all the various tools properly and, most importantly, know which one to reach for when you see the task in front of you. Experience is obviously very valuable, but equally, even to a novice plumber, a bust pipe should be pretty obvious. The problem with digital files is that any issue may be well below the surface.
Once upon a time, it was sufficient to advise a customer to save a file as a PDF or a JPG, and that would be fine because, generally, those customers had some understanding of what they were doing or the programs they were using were more fundamental in what they actually did. Now, with so many alternative apps and many ways of saving many different types of files, it is a veritable minefield to pick your way through them all. So it becomes much more important to ask the customer what software they are using and how they are saving the file — if you have the opportunity. It doesn’t matter if they are using a freebie they downloaded from Google Store; anyone who claims to be a designer can make just as many mistakes saving for print. Sometimes, someone who thinks they know what they are doing is often worse than a novice. Remember, your default mode should be suspicion.
BRIDGE THE GAP
If you don’t have a chance to take your customer in hand and guide them through their creation, then at least you can check the bare bones of it, as much is buried literally under the skin in metadata embedded in the file. That should be your first call in preparation for print if you have any doubts about the integrity of the source. That’s why I always recommend using Adobe Bridge to check files and why Adobe created and developed it as an essential hub connecting the various applications in the Creative Cloud stable.
Bridge started life as a simple picture browser within early versions of Photoshop when it was obvious that digital cameras could take hundreds of pictures that needed to be sorted and selected before editing. It performs a similar task today — just with a bigger window.
Using thumbnail views of most file types is a much quicker way of identifying individual files by eye; additional details will list important facts about them.
Bridge should tell you what you need to know about the content and creation of a file, and you can add preferences to filter the priority information.
Because this column was started to explore digital imaging and its place in printing, it has always been pixel-based, and Bridge has been a natural habitat. But it’s equally applicable to vector files and design packages because it can link them all together. So you can take a file from Bridge into Photoshop and drop an edited version into place in an InDesign layout, and the same is true with Illustrator files. And it works live, so changes in one app will be updated in the other.
That’s just the beginning. Bridge is often overlooked as an important tool, but it is so much more than a simple browser, as many tasks can be done directly from it. It’s all about efficient workflow and maximising what you have available. Most importantly, it’s designed to be very human-friendly, and I’ll show you more of its capability next month.

YOUNG PEOPLE IN PRINT (YPIP) GROUP LAUNCHES
A newly established group dedicated to inspiring the next generation by bridging the gap between education and the dynamic world of printing has announced its launch. With a mission to cultivate
a passion for entering the printing industry among young minds, the group of volunteers will deliver engaging events held at printing facilities across the UK, welcoming groups of students from local schools and universities.
Joining Elizabeth Bowerman, Head of UK Sales at Stephen Austin & Sons, are Paul Stead of ASL Group, Joanna Stephenson of PHD Marketing, Kelvin Bell of VPress, Lucy Swanston of the SMP and Nutshell Creative and Delroy Simmons of Dayfold.
Elizabeth, a long-term advocate of the need to attract young talent into the industry to ensure the future success of the sector, comments: “We are reaching out to schools and universities to enable students to see for themselves how amazing the print and packaging industries really are.”
With an annual turnover of £13.7 billion and employing around 98,000 people in 7,200 companies, the UK printing sector is an important economic contributor in all UK regions and is the fifth largest print market in the world. It is also an advanced manufacturing sector, utilising cutting-edge innovation and production technologies, connecting organisations around the world. Despite this, attracting young people to work in the industry continues to be a challenge.
“It has an ageing skilled workforce, and the number of tradespeople working in print is plummeting - by 73% between 2006 and 2021, according to the latest data”, Elizabeth shares. “Workers are approaching retirement, and there is a risk their skills will be lost, which could have serious consequences for our industry if not mitigated.
“Sadly, our industry has an oldfashioned image, and there is very limited print or packaging education available today, apart from print apprenticeships, but even then, not all printers are using their levy to fund employees,” she explains, citing negative (yet false) environmental perceptions and competition from better-publicised industries like aviation, engineering, automotive and biotech, among other

barriers to encouraging young people to the sector.
“YPIP has been established to promote the industry as a far more dynamic, high-tech, innovative, connected, and exciting place to work with clear career progression routes and opportunities” says Elizabeth.
The group will connect print facilities with local schools and universities to promote print as an attractive career and showcase its realities, opportunities and benefits and will hold its first event in March 2024.

Colourfast upgrade to Xerox V280 – no brainer
An easy move up to the latest PSP Xerox digital press. Our V80 upgrade meant checking how our original decision had stacked up and how print trends have changed.
We have noted that our customers are demanding print in shorter turnaround times and shorter runs. Lead on variable data if you want to attract print-to-mail or specialise in what you excel at. With speed and efficiency paramount, double-check that your productivity and automation are at least carried forward with the new kit or, better still, enhanced.
Re-visit your marketing that highlighted quality and finished products by application. Don’t use jargon when booklets or three-fold menus will be understood more easily. Match your marketing to the category of business products your customers use or could aspire to attract their own new business.
Stick to your quick print pro principles. Offer customers the best two of these three buying criteria. Speed, Quality, Price. Just because you have new kit, don’t expect it to sell itself. This new Xerox V280 will, however, attract volume, but don’t rest on your laurels. Consider your customers buying criteria. Do they want it fast, top quality and cheap? Buying to price hardly ever delivers quality and speed. Many professional print service providers sell a premium express service with the Xerox Versant family reliability and running costs, not at a special lower price, no, plus 20 or 25%.
Selling a priority option does leave your customers to choose delivery time. When asked, they seldom need a long run on the same day or are happy with a small run on the day and the rest in two days. Setting a precedent with a Versant will get you into promises that only two machines will deliver, so take care unless you have room for another.
Higher selling prices are being achieved for colour matching or introducing embellished neon or foil-looking prints. Yes, spot varnish too.
Horses for courses, really. We love flyers and posters as they are in demand daily in our seaside town, along with menus in a huge assortment of sizes, stocks and finishes, all bread and butter to our V280.
For the past 10 years, Xerox has been
the top-selling press vendor in the colour light and mid-production press categories. That’s where Versant® lives, and for good reason. You get industry-leading image quality and more automation in the base model than most competitive presses offer, even at higher ‘trim’ levels.
Before you ask the price, let me share our research: On our present print volumes, the new lower running costs of the V280 funded the rental. So same monthly billing for an upgraded print press. Check out your own proposal with DWS who will take into consideration the settling of any existing finance and your present service spend. Proposed new costings are prepared for comparison of your total monthly spend. Fingers crossed, contact Peter Ryan peter@dwsl. co.uk
EYES DOWN, NEW ACRONYMS COMING YOUR WAY…
So what’s new over and above our previous Versant 80? If speed is your thing, you can get it without sacrificing quality with All Stocks Rated Speed (ASRS) option, which includes an upgraded Xerox Interface Decurler Module (IDM/ASRS), increasing speed by 25% on the heaviest stocks, including the ability to deliver full rated 80 ppm on all stocks up to 400 gsm.
Go compare with what you have versus what is now on offer. In short, Versant® is very versatile, with more feeding options and more inline finishing options. Tailormade for your print room, choose the exact compilation to match your needs and then some.
The Versant® 280 handles a wide range of media so you can produce an impressive range of jobs — coated and uncoated papers, bright papers, labels, business cards, glossy brochures, window decals, durable/synthetic papers, greeting cards, tabs, embossed, polyesters and custom solutions 52 to 400 gsm.
The Versant® 280’s Integrated Registration Alignment (IRA) is a combination of proprietary technology that automatically gives you remarkable registration.
When used in conjunction with Simple Image Quality Adjustments (SIQA), your press becomes more capable, allowing you to produce higher quality jobs faster and on more media types for better output.
Automated Image-to-Media Alignment ensures each page is perfectly registered and aligned. Automated Image Transfer Adjustment ensures unsurpassed print quality on every stock. Automated Density Uniformity Adjustment safeguards image integrity across the page.
20 | MARCH 2024 QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK Case Study — Xerox V280
The Versant®280 has a high-quality single-pass copier/scanner as standard equipment.
Do you sell scanning as a walkin service? Our new Versant 280 simultaneously scans both sides of each page and provides a copy and scan duplex speed of 200ipm for black and white as well as colour at 400dpi resolution. At 600dpi, the speed is 150ppm for colour and 200ppm for black and white. This speed, combined with the large capacity 250-sheet Duplexing Automatic Document Feeder (DADF), delivers excellent copying and scanning productivity.
In addition to copying, the scanning output options include scan to a local folder, scan to USB, email, network, or scan to a computer.
Automated Sheet Decurling is a standard feature of the Versant® 280 and it is built right into the print engine.
The new innovative flat fuser pad in the Compact Belt Fuser results in a larger surface contact area, reducing paper stress and deformation.
The fuser uses two heat rolls to replenish the heat lost through the fusing
process more quickly and efficiently for consistent image quality at high speeds.
Although designed for a long life, the entire assembly is customer-replaceable, eliminating downtime and lost productivity.
This means it can print up to 400gsm without the issues a normal fuser-based product would historically have.
More new bits include the new Xerox®
Ultra HD Resolution combines 1200 x 1200 RIP rendering with 2400 x 2400 imaging at the engine. While other presses may RIP at 1200 x 1200, Versant® is the only one with a 10-bit pipeline to send data to the engine. That’s up to four times more pixel data than other presses. n DWS

‘Redefine the printing game’, redefining the digital printing ‘game’ through innovative solutions. This was Fedrigoni’s objective in view of Salon C!Print, in which it took part as a Group for the first time. The 3660mm long by 2300mm high photo wall was made entirely from Xanita board, covered in copies of the iconic pink paper. Taking inspiration from the FT’s Japanese ownership, and continuing the pink theme, Nathan also used Xanita to craft ‘cherry tree branches’ that extend from the sides of the wall and are covered with delicate, three dimensional pink paper flowers.
Nathan explains how Xanita really came into its own when he was creating the branches: “I love how easy Xanita is to work with. I was able to create the three dimensional tree branch structure in my studio using nothing more than a scalpel.”
For previous installations, Nathan would use plywood and foam board to create the non-paper, structural components of his installations — products that were heavy and cumbersome or lacked the environmental credentials. In choosing Xanita, Nathan can both fulfil his environmental goals and manoeuvre Xanita without the need to hire help as its light weight also helps to keep transport costs low. www.antalis.co.uk
Established in 1845, James Cropper produces paper, packaging and advanced materials incorporating pioneering non-wovens and electrochemical coatings. It is a global leader and specialist provider of niche solutions tailored to a unique customer specification, ranging from substrates and components in hydrogen electrolysis and fuel cells to bespoke colours and textures in paper and moulded fibre packaging designed to replace single use plastics.
To meet a growing market demand for high quality textural effects for luxury packaging and creative papers, the company decided to make a significant investment in new special purpose plant and contacted Emerson & Renwick (E&R Group), of Accrington, a world leader in the design and manufacture of sophisticated roll to roll production machinery. As a result, E&R designed a machine which first embosses the required pattern onto the paper. This emboss can be enhanced by applying a water based varnish to the substrate; making the base colour richer in appearance and also improving scuff resistance. However, before the paper is rewound, the varnish needs to be fully dried.
To solve this drying problem, E&R contacted Heraeus Noblelight, with whom they have a long standing relationship, with a history of many successful, collaborative projects. Heraeus then supplied a 22.5 kW carbon infra-red system so that trials could be carried out on E&R’s pilot plant to determine the optimum system to fully dry the varnish at paper speeds of up to 140m/min.
These trials proved successful and a roll on roll off machine was supplied to James Cropper incorporating a 108 kW carbon medium wave infra-red system consisting of 24 emitters, herringboned across the web to allow the power to be switched in five zones to suit web widths from 750mm to 1300mm. The system is also PID-controlled to ensure that only the power needed to meet the drying temperature is applied. In addition, Heraeus also supplied a rear reflector/cooling module, which passes a gentle flow of air over the back of the web. In the event of line stoppage, this cooling air flow is ramped up to minimise the risk of fire.

Eco-friendly Fedrigoni self-adhesive labels
A versatile, sophisticated and, above all, unrivalled collection. The main ingredients are cotton fibres from textile waste, which they carefully process to create exclusive labels for a wide range of applications. This is Manter by Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives’ Cotone range. Manter by Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives’ adhesive technologies and the outstanding quality of the distinctive Fedrigoni papers come together to create an innovative, elegant and exclusive product — premium self-adhesive papers with superb felt marked textures.
The papers used for the self-adhesive face materials are produced by a number of companies within the group and feature a high grammage, which makes them ideal for embossing and debossing.
The collection consisting of Bianco, Extra Bianco, Nero Felt and Nero Intenso papers is now joined by two new products: Essenza and Bianco Sabbia, two highly sought-after solutions on the market, which have a more textured surface that is rougher to the touch. All labels in the Cotone range are treated with UWS and Barrier technology to ensure maximum performance in terms of adhesion and resistance to tearing and humidity.
and careful use of resources. It embodies the sense of collaboration that permeates within the Fedrigoni Group, an important work of synergy resulting both from the coming together of the world of paper and quality self-adhesives and from the choice of materials manufactured by several companies in the group”, says Susana Fajardo, Product Manager
for Premium Papers at Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives.
“Sustainability is at the heart of the collection: instead of cellulose, we use cotton waste, which is no longer useful to the textile industry. For Fedrigoni, achieving a circular economy through the use of recycled materials is not only a necessity, but also an opportunity to innovate, create and set themselves apart.”

swissQprint moves ahead with solar power
A photovoltaic installation has begun operation at swissQprint headquarters. It is set to cover more than 50 percent of electricity demand at the Schützenwiese building complex in Kriessern, where swissQprint is headquartered.
A solar array with 1276 photovoltaic panels in Kriessern, Switzerland, was connected to the electricity grid in February 2024. It is installed on the roof of swissQprint’s main production hall and will produce around 613,000 kWh of electricity a year. This corresponds to more than half of electricity demand at the Schützenwiese business park, where swissQprint is one of the largest companies.
A step towards electricity self-sufficiency
The photovoltaic installation will also power eight newly erected charging stations for electric vehicles. It is designed for easy future expansibility. “The solar project brings us a big step forward in terms of sustainability and self-sufficiency,” says Reto Eicher, co-owner of swissQprint and the project coordinator.
A foundation built on sustainability
When the business park was built back in 2013/14, the construction clients including swissQprint put strong emphasis on sustainability. Building services are independent of fossil fuels. Interiors are heated and cooled by groundwater. Electric pumps drive the heat
exchange system, which will be powered in future from the photovoltaic installation. Swiss building standards are high by international comparison, and the Schützenwiese business park exceeds the standard for industrial buildings. That includes the insulation R-value of the building envelope and windows, as well as automatic sun blinds. Optimised temperature management is the
objective throughout.
The entire building complex uses energysaving LED lighting. Furthermore, both swissQprint production halls have saw-tooth roofs that admit ample natural light into the building interior. This makes artificial lighting superfluous at times and further reduces electricity consumption.

Jess Wright Graphics goes back to school
West Yorkshire based diversified signage, displays and vehicle graphics business Jess Wright Graphics has opened up on how its use of DECAL polymeric vinyl and DECAL polymeric overlaminate from Soyang Europe has allowed it to take on a wide range of interior display work within the education sector.
Founded in 2000, Jess Wright Graphics offers a wide array of services to the market, ranging from commercial and bespoke signage to vehicle graphics and wraps, striking window and floor graphics and colourful wallpapers.
Established as a leading sign and display company in the West Yorkshire region, Jess Wright Graphics has also partnered with a number of schools and colleges to help transform their interiors with a host of eyecatching applications.
Jess Wright Graphics has partnered with Soyang Europe on many of these projects, working with the specialist wide format supplier to identify the best materials for each job. Most applications have been created using DECAL polymeric vinyl and overlaminate, both of which are supplied in the UK and Ireland by
75-micron self adhesive vinyl with a permanent adhesive and a 135g/sq.m. double sided PE liner. It can be used in a wide range of short and medium term promotional applications.
Accompanying this is DECAL polymeric overlaminate, a 75-micron polymeric PVC film with UV protection and stabilisation and high performance, high tack, ultra-crystalline adhesive. The film is easy to clean and can be used as anti-graffiti protection.
Jess Wright Graphics prints all applications in house using its Mimaki JV300 Series and JV33 Series printers. Projects have included
maps and history timelines, to large murals and wall art.
“DECAL polymeric vinyl is a cost effective product that causes no problems for us; it is very easy to work with and can be used in a range of applications,” Jess Wright Graphics Director Jess Wright said. “We have used both the polymeric vinyl and overlaminate in many of the school projects we have produced.
“We have been working with Soyang Europe for almost 10 years now and they always provide us with a good and reliable service. We look forward to continuing this partnership.” www.soyang.co.uk
swissQprint celebrates three years of neon
swissQprint is celebrating the third anniversary of the launch of its neon inks, which have proved increasingly popular as print service providers look to add value to the innovative solutions they deliver to clients across the UK.
swissQprint was the first printer manufacturer to bring neon options to UV inkjet printing in March 2021 after a two year development process. The pioneering firm saw great potential in neon inks for customers wishing to expand their print capabilities and set themselves apart from the competition.
Sitting alongside swissQprint’s CMYK and other inks, the neon pink and neon yellow gives indoor signage a dazzling look. Suitable for rigid and flexible media they have exceeded expectations and become an integral part of many customers’ swissQprint machines.
A philosophical fit
With versatility at the heart of swissQprint’s machines, the print expert wanted to ensure the neon inks would fit seamlessly into its highly modular, configurable system. Customers were not only able to specify neon as a part of their machine build, but also add the extra colour options to existing printers. To date nine businesses are using neon inks in the UK.
“Expanding the arsenal of what is available to swissQprint customers is part and parcel of what we do,” said swissQprint UK Managing Director, Erskine Stewart. “We always stress the configurable nature of our machines, and by offering the opportunity to add neon colours print service providers have even more choice to best suit their needs.”
A strong retail and events presence
The resulting feedback from the market and customers using neon colours has been nothing other than positive with the retail and events sectors proving to be early converts to the inks. Through sophisticated design and the wider capabilities of the swissQprint machines, neons have been seamlessly integrated into large window displays, hanging signage, and more.
Designers, brand owners, and agencies working in the print sector have been able to reimagine their approach to design, leveraging the unique capabilities of neon inks to create impactful and personalised experiences through UV inkjet printing.
Many users have seen the feature as a huge opportunity to get creative and move away from traditional uses of neons in screen printing. The application has given swissQprint customers the freedom to explore all possible opportunities through digital printing.
“Over the last three year we have been amazed by the results our customers have delivered through the sophisticated use of neon inks,” said Stewart. “From paper to acrylic, from glass to aluminium, neons have allowed designers to create memorable visuals and we look forward to the creativity and impact delivered over the next three years and beyond.”

RSR PROVIDE GIBSON HYBRID FOR BULLDOG
New UV Hybrid Gibson from RSR proves you don’t have to pay “silly money” for display print production. Bulldog Display describes itself as an ‘Event Production’ company, which places it at the most challenging and varied end of the sign and display industry. Almost all its work is for short-term use, sometimes for exhibitions, but more often for major corporate product launches and temporary retail ‘takeovers.’ Recent examples include the construction of a six metre high advent calendar shaped like a rocket and a giant replica of a drink can.
As a result, the company’s print output needs to be at scale and as versatile as possible; to this end it has invested in a Gibson GTH3200R6 UV Hybrid Printer with a combined 3.2m flatbed and roll feeding capability, supplied by Repro Sales and Repairs Ltd.
“This is a machine which will do pretty much everything for us,” says Print Finisher Tayler Hill. “Typically this means adhesive rolls such as greyback or high tack, plus all kinds of boards up to around 80mm thick, with the option of running acrylics, glass, even wood.”
The new Gibson replaces a roll fed Refretonic 3.2m Eco Solvent Printer, and the addition of a flatbed production capability was a key reason for the investment — but not ultimately the most significant difference, according to Tyler. “Running UV inks has been a revelation,” he says. “Previously we would print and then laminate, but now we have cut the lamination stage out altogether, which saves a great deal of time and expense. It’s not just reduced print and drying time, there’s a better quality matt finish to our work, plus it’s more durable and scratch resistant.”
During busy periods, the new Gibson Hybrid can produce up to 24 square metres per hour according to Tyler. “The vacuum bed keeps everything precisely flat and rolls continuously like a treadmill,” he says. “There are lots of details I like, it’s self-lubricating, unlike our old machine, and it comes with an Onyx RIP which offers a lot of control. There are lots of clever design features to make my job easier.”
Bulldog Display owner, Brian Prosser, says that the choice of the Gibson was not difficult. “People pay silly money for this kind of machine when they don’t need to. It uses the latest generation Ricoh Gen6 Print Heads, which is the key component, and the engineering is equal to anything else on the market — there was no contest!” www.reprosales.co.uk
