This issue’s cover features ice speedway. Not much of this happens in the South East of England admittedly, but it shows the huge diversity of activity that takes place using powered two wheelers. As we roll on into 2014, issue 31 covers some of the varied motorcycling events coming up and that have taken place. And this is only a small selection of what’s on offer to us as bikers. Moped endurance racing, Boxing Day enduro in the mud, an assault on the world electric bike speed record and a look back at Burt Munro’s extraordinary exploits at Bonneville, all motorbike madness in one form or another. Here at SEB we try and cover as wide a range of motorcycling subjects as possible and plenty of our material is supplied from readers across the region. Keep it coming! The term “motorcycling community” is widely used these days and if you read Sandy Caulfield’s article on the Bike Experience it shows that bikers, as a rule, not only look out for each other but are only too happy to help others less fortunate than themselves. From a simple nod in passing, to a biker turning round and coming back to help as you try and fix a broken bike by the roadside, we do genuinely belong to a section of society that has a common bond. South East Biker is a free publication that, we believe, serves a purpose in connecting bikers across the region and beyond. It is funded solely by the much appreciated support of our advertisers. Please use their services and visit their premises. Mention SEB, it really does make a difference to us and we can continue to promote everything motorbike related. GetGeared, for example, are offering a special discount to any reader bringing in their back page ad. And Helmet City are offering a free bungee or comfy to SEB readers. Keep in touch and let us in your biking adventure plans for 2014. All the best Nick Tunstill

DEBATE

THE DEVIL IN YOUR TANK… FUELLING THE DEBATE Do you have a pre-1996 bike, carburetors or, even worse, a plastic or fibreglass petrol tank? If you do, as Nick Tunstill found to his cost, you need to know about this issue. Manufacturers won’t answer questions on it, fuel companies certainly aren’t interested, but forums across the world are full of discussions on the “evils” of ethanol in our fuel…

A

couple of summer’s ago, my 03 Tiger’s plastic tank started to blister. I presumed something had spilt on it and didn’t take a lot of notice of it at first. Then Terry of Everest Motorcycles pointed out my tank had started to distort and he had seen plastic tanks 4

eventually leak. Not good. I went on the Tiger forum and seemed to be the only person aware of this so I thought I was just unlucky. Gradually the blistering increased and I realised it was time for more research and action. I asked a Triumph dealer for some information. “I can’t

comment, haven’t come across it before” was his rather tongue in cheek response. No help there then. However now, on the same Triumph forum, a reasonable percentage of Tiger owners have seen this, plus other models, Ducatis, KTMs and pretty much any bike brand using these tanks,

DEBATE so it is an issue to be aware of. If you use petrol for your motorcycle, family car, classic car, boat or any other type of equipment that has a petrol engine, you need to know about Ethanol in your fuel. WHAT IS ETHANOL? Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol, grain alcohol, or drinking alcohol, is a volatile, flammable, colourless liquid. Best known as the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, it is also used in thermometers, as a solvent and as an alcohol fuel. In common usage, it is often referred to simply as alcohol or spirits. WHERE DOES IT COME FROM? Ethanol is sustainable and domestically produced from renewable resources such as corn, grains and potatoes. WHY ADD ETHANOL TO PETROL? Ethanol is good for our agricultural economy and helps us reduce our dependency on foreign petroleum products. On the ‘green’ side they are aimed at improving air quality and reducing air pollution from fuel emissions. WHAT PROPORTION OF THE FUEL IS ETHANOL? The standard permitted ethanol content in petrol in the UK is currently 5%. There is talk of the introduction of up to 10% content in the near future. You will even hear whispers of the introduction of 15% in the USA. However, there is a lot of conflicting information on the percentage content. The UK has biofuel targets to meet which are currently 5% and this seems to be the current norm. Trying to obtain up to date information from the fuel companies is…challenging. Super unleaded petrol, labeled as 97 6

RON, should contain no more than 5%. However, some of it contains no Ethanol, such as BP Ultimate. But this can vary over time and even in different parts of the country. Try asking the staff behind the counter about the Ethanol content of their fuel and see the blank looks! To make things confusing, there is no minimum level and some UK 95 RON fuel contains no Ethanol. SO WHAT? Ethanol can cause serious problems to your engine and fuel system. Generally vehicles built after 1996 have been designed with Biofuels in mind, but earlier cars and engines with carburettors are going to need help. WHAT TYPES OF PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERED? Water accumulation in the fuel tank – ethanol absorbs water from the air. The water condenses in the fuel tank and will pull the ethanol out of suspension with the petrol. This is bad news because it strips the octane out of the petrol, leaving you with a layer of octane-poor fuel on top and a water-ethanol layer mixture on the bottom. If this gets sucked into the combustion chamber, you will have poor starting and very rough

running with potentially engine damage. Deposits are likely to build up — Ethanol when mixed with water readily forms gums in the fuel system much quicker than fuel without Ethanol. These gums coat fuel system components including filters, carburettors, injectors, throttle plates and will then form varnish and carbon deposits in the intake, on valves, and in the combustion chamber. ANYTHING ELSE?? Lower fuel mileage, decreased performance and acceleration. Ethanol contains less chemical energy than petrol does, and this means less mileage for the driver. 3-5% drops in mileage is average. Corrosion of internal engine components: Water contamination may cause fuel system corrosion and severe deterioration. Contaminants in fuel system: water, degraded rubber, plastic, fibreglass and rust may get drawn in. Shorter shelf life: Not so long ago you could store a bike over winter and start it fine in spring with the fuel in the tank. Not so easy now, it will go off in a couple of months. If you run a track bike, for example, always use fresh fuel.

DEBATE Corrodes plastic and rubber: Ethanol is a strong, aggressive solvent and will cause problems with rubber hoses, O-rings, seals, and gaskets. These problems are worse during extended storage when significant deterioration could take place. Hoses may delaminate, O-rings soften and break down, and fuel system components made from certain types of plastics could either soften or become hard and brittle, eventually failing. Fuel system components made from brass, copper, and aluminium may oxidize. The dissolved plastics and resins now in the fuel could end up in blocked fuel filters or gummy deposits. Steel can have its protective layer removed by the Ethanol and therefore rust. ANY MORE BAD NEWS? Melts Fibreglass: bikes and boats with fibreglass fuel tanks can have structural failure as the Ethanol will break down and pick-up some of the materials the tanks are made from. This has happened to a friend of ours who runs a classic race replica, not fun! Again this material, dissolved from the tank, can be carried through the fuel system and can cause damage to carburettors, fuel injectors and can actually get into the combustion chambers. Even metal fuel tanks aren’t necessarily immune, many early ones were made of sheets of pressed metal. The ethanol content can destroy the bonding. Petrol has a much lower surface tension than water and so will leak through the tiniest of holes.

to try and use premium fuel wherever possible. It’s a little more expensive, but in theory, better for your bike and you will get better performance and mpg. My Tiger certainly runs better on it. Classic and older machines may need a little more thought and preparation. Fuel lines, seals and taps can be replaced with Ethanol resistant parts. Fibreglass and other tanks can be sealed with various potions. Hitchcocks Motorcycles, a Royal Enfield parts supplier, do a product called Caswell that has been used in the USA for some years. Before using any of these products, we suggest some in depth research on your particular motorbike. Forums are a good place to start.

IS MY BIKE DOOMED THEN? If your tank or any other components are already affected then there’s not much that can be done, as far as we can see. If your bike doesn’t have any issues, the simplest answer is

MY SOLUTION FOR THE TIGER TANK I bought a replacement tank off a well known auction site. It was in fairly decent condition, apart from a scuff on one side. A mark like this drastically affects the price,

8

but don’t let this put you off. This is repairable as you can see and mine cost me a tenner as opposed to a few hundred quid. Then it was off to see Chris Pugh of Owlsbury Coachworks, Crowborough. They are a specialist vehicle accident repair and paint centre. Chris’s passion is motorcycling and airbrushing, so I thought as I was getting a new paint job, I would design something a little more different. I wanted to emphasise the Britishness of the Triumph, whilst keeping the original silver and black colour scheme. After preparing the tank and spraying it all silver, Chris stenciled on the Triumph logo followed by the airbrushing. Personally, I love it and think it works well. Chris has done a great job and given me something unique. Check out more of their work on Facebook at Owlsbury Accident Repair Centre Who knows what will happen to this tank? I will run it on premium fuel wherever possible. You really don’t have any idea what you are running your bike on as even the staff at the petrol stations are in the dark about this. If anyone has any other solutions to this issue, please get in touch nick@southeastbiker.co.uk and we can run a follow up.

TRAVEL

TRAVELLING WITHOUT MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL INSURANCE – IS IT WORTH THE RISK? There is nothing better than jumping on your bike and heading for the open road. However, many bikers do not realise the potential risks of travelling without Motorcycle Travel Insurance.

U

nfortunately when travelling abroad unforeseen accidents and holiday disasters can strike at any time, and these types of misfortunes can be disastrous for bikers who usually rely solely on themselves and their bike to get them to and from their holiday destination. What if you have an accident and need emergency medical treatment? What if you fall ill and cannot ride your bike home? What if your motorcycle kit is damaged, lost or stolen? – Many people wouldn’t know what to do in these terrible situations, and most would be unable to afford the potential costs and bills involved. Bikers will normally spend time and money comparing insurance policies for their bike and ensuring they have international cover in case of a mechanical failure 10

or accident, however they will usually forget to make sure that they are personally protected in case of the same events. This leaves them vulnerable if they are injured whilst riding, or if they have to change their plans due to mechanical break downs during the trip. The benefits of purchasing motorcycle travel insurance definitely outweigh the potential risks of not having cover – but it is still something a lot of people overlook, or do not realise is available. At Holidaysafe.co.uk we specialise in affordable Motorcycle Travel Insurance, our range of Biker’s travel insurance policies were created when our own staff, who are motorcycle enthusiasts themselves, realised that there were very few policies which offered affordable and adequate cover for motorcycle

touring holidays. This means that our cover is specifically tailored to what motorcyclists actually need when touring, off roading and participating in a track event abroad. Many standard travel insurers exclude cover for customers who are going on holiday with motorcycles over 250cc, however our policies provide cover for travellers on any size bike (as long as they have the correct UK licence). In addition to all the usual travel insurance benefits, we also provide cover for injuries and medical emergencies sustained whilst riding, and any necessary repatriation or curtailment costs. We’ll also cover your leathers, helmet, boots and gloves just in case they are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Furthermore, if you have to return home without your bike due to illness, injury or mechanical failure, we will cover the necessary accommodation and travel expenses for one person to collect your motorcycle from abroad when it is ready. We offer a range of motorcycle cover levels including Single and Multi Trip insurance starting from just £8.22, so you can choose the policy to suit your trip and budget. For more information and a free no obligation quote, please visit Holidaysafe.co.uk/SEB or call 0845 2307 622.

PRODUCT FOCUS

THE HEAT IS ON

Being warm and dry on your bike is vital, not just so you feel comfortable, but to help you to keep your concentration when riding. A small drop in body temperature will affect your reaction time, not a great idea on a motorbike. The biking population is ageing and as such we are more susceptible to the elements and our famous British weather….

M

otorcycle clothing has improved beyond belief over the last few years, but there are still occasions when a combination of cold temperatures and a long ride can challenge even the best kit. Once the temperature of various parts of your body drop below a certain point, you are not going to warm up again while riding. The thought of going out on a cold winter’s day and having to try and warm up at the other end doesn’t always inspire you to jump on the bike. Heated motorcycle kit has been around for a few years now, but now is reliable, efficient and affordable. I have been trying out some Gerbing gloves out over the winter to see if the kit lives up to the publicity. A bit of background…Gordon Gerbing started developing electrically heated clothing in 1976 in connection with the aeronautics industry. The company became a manufacturer and supplier in 1996 and are the leading brand. Personally, my hands are the most important part of me to keep warm. My fingers are the first to feel the effects of a chilly ride, not only do they become painful and uncomfortable, but trying to operate the clutch and front brake becomes a real challenge. The cold seems to spread along my arms and transfer itself around my body. I have hand guards and heated grips, which are effective to an extent. The guards deflect the wind and any rain, the grips do a decent jobs of keeping my palms warm. Unfortunately, after a while, my fingertips start to freeze and the blood seems to disappear, not good! The Gerbings gloves I have are the T-12’s. 12

Made from supple, drum dyed leather, they are very effective as a glove in their own right. They are waterproof, windproof and breathable containing a Hipora lining. They also feature Thinsulate insulation, found in many of today’s gloves. They can run by either being connected to the bike or by rechargeable batteries. There is a handy little pouch in the cuff to tuck the batteries away in. This gives the flexibility to use them on various bikes, if you are lucky enough to have more than one! Gerbings supply a junior controller and the relevant bits to wire the gloves up. It is a simple job to connect the two wires to the battery and run a cable under the seat for a suitable mount for the connection. This can be cable tied in a convenient position to allow access to plug yourself in. The connection has a plastic cap to keep out the crud and damp when not wired up. I have run the wires inside my Held winter jacket in between the outer shell and the inner lining. This means they are well out of the way and I can simply plug myself into the bike and the gloves onto the wires with simple slip in connections. The controller has four power levels which are easy to access. On low power, even on a pretty chilly day, the low power gives a lovely gentle warmth over the back of my hands and right down to all those important finger tips. If it’s not too cold, simply don’t plug them in. on their own the Gerbings February-March 2014 • South East Biker Magazine

PRODUCT FOCUS

Cold? are effective winter gloves. If the temperature drops, simply click the power up a notch and the difference is noticeable. It’s amazing how much warmer I feel on the bike with just my hands feeling comfortable. Gerbings heated kit is designed to connect together to provide a complete warming solution. They make jackets, liners, trousers and socks, so not much left out of the equation. A unique feature of the Gerbings kit is the stainless steel heating wire that comes with a lifetime guarantee on the elements. On many of the earlier versions of heated kits wires breaking was a major issue. This seems to have been solved now and the products should last. The other bid advance is the pricing. The T-12’s will cost you £149.99 from Getgeared, when you consider the cost of a decent pair of winter gloves and a set of heated grips, they start to look pretty good value. Heated kit can also be used for a variety of other outdoor activities, walking, cycling, horse riding, ski-ing, the list goes on. So, if it’s just the temperature holding you back, the answer is at hand…literally. The full range of products can be seen at www.gerbing.eu. SEATING

In The Hot Seat A lot of you will be familiar with Viking Motorcycle Seats, based near Brands Hatch. They have been the first port of call for many bikers over the years, offering a very good service at excellent prices.

T

heir main area of business has, until recently, been the re-covering and re-shaping of motorbike seats. If it’s a bit tatty, the upholstery worn down or you need the height altering, Viking offer an excellent service. They can also insert gel pads to improve comfort for those longer journeys. A couple of years ago they started to offer an inhouse embroidery service. So now you can not only have your seat re-covered and re-shaped but add your own personal mark on it. A recent addition to the Viking Motorcycle Seats range of services is the option of heated seat pads, they call them Brad Pads. My Tiger seat was feeling the affect of many miles of my posterior and needed an overhaul. So it was off to see Lee at Viking who gave me the option of a heated seat together with embroidery. Well, why the hell not? I had a spare seat, bought off eBay so I popped this on and left my regular one with Lee for a few days. We agreed on logos and position and that was it. The pads are built into the seat and the wiring neatly appears at the base, hidden away when fitted. Viking offer the option to wire up the seat to the battery, but it’s a very simple job, even I can do it. And my electrical and mechanical skills are somewhat limited! Two wires, a push connector and a power 14

switch, simple. I presume this could be wired into the ignition circuit somehow if required. I collected the seat, admiring the stitching skills of Lee, and took it home and had it fitted within an hour. I cable tied the power switch under the seat. It is fairly hidden to the casual observer but easily accessible to me on the bike. Switching it on, I expected a fairly lukewarm heat to filter through, but it actually warms up quite quickly and heats up the whole of the seat. There are two heat setting for the pads, even the low one pumps out at a fair old temperature. I haven’t undertaken any really long trips over the winter, but riding for a couple of hours in chilly conditions over Christmas has shown the benefits of this option. Keeping your core body temperature is crucial to maintain concentration when riding, particular in winter. Heated seats can only help with this and it’s well worth a look at this simple, effective technology as the cost is not too daunting either. Have a look at the Facebook page for Viking Motorcycle Seats. There are some fabulous examples of their handywork and skills. A set of Brad Pads inserted while you have work done on the seat will cost you a mere £75 or £95 fully wired in. Lee at Viking can be contacted on 07977 874075, www.viking-motorcycle-seats.co.uk or email leetheseat@hotmail.co.uk February-March 2014 • South East Biker Magazine

TECHNOLOGY

TECHNOLOGY ON OUR SIDE IN 2014

One of the most common posts on our Facebook site, and many others, is for stolen bikes. It’s a big problem in the biking community. Bikes are worth a lot of money and often even more in bits. The parts are easy to sell and hard to trace. There is a huge array of anti-theft devices, from basic locks through to high tech alarm and tracking systems. But which is best for you and what will give the best value for money? The advent and wide adoption of Smart phones has bought a raft of Apps and user controlled features that give us more armaments in the fight against theft.

The latest technology uses NFC (Near Field Communication) chips to transmit information simply to your phone without the requirement of power or phone signal. By tapping or holding an NFC enabled phone near a programmed chip, information can be transferred to your device. The use of RFID chips has helped track down components by identifying the original owner as the details can be entered on a national database. Trading Standards officers and the Police (occasionally) carry bespoke scanners that read the RFID chips. The NFC chips come in the form of small, thin circuit printed stickers around 15mm diameter. RFID chips are tiny, they use the same components as found in animal microchips. Systems such as Datatag and Alpha Dot are effective deterrents, using invisible markings, but need specialist equipment to read the information. The best initial deterrent to a bike thief is a good lock, preferably connecting it to something solid such as a lamp post. Cover you bike wherever possible, then you are not advertising your pride and joy. Then look at putting markings on the machine to warn potential thieves that it’s traceable. It’s possible to utilise NFC and RFID chips for this. They are not expensive and you can hide a few away on your bike that means components can be read by anyone with a Smart phone. Handy if you see something that looks like yours at a bike jumble or similar. It’s worth using anti-tamper stickers on the bike to help prevent theft in the first place. A determined thief will probably steal your bike no matter what. But the majority of thefts are scooters, smaller and cheaper bikes, the ideal target of the opportunist. Often these don’t warrant a full alarm or tracking system but some simple, cheap markers can make all the difference. It’s also possible to track your bike if it moves without your permission! Again you need to pick 16

your level of cover. GPS tracking systems can be self-monitored via your own mobile phone or you can buy one and pay a monthly subscription to have someone else do it for you. They all use the same technology, basically speed and motion alerts will get the unit to text you or an operator with a web based map reference giving you location, speed, direction etc. This will give you an early warning that your bike is heading off somewhere without you, possibly without the low lifes who have taken it even knowing it’s tracked. Bike thieves sometimes pinch a bike and then leave it for 24 hours somewhere out of the way to see if it has a tracker (or two) on it. Normally if it’s still there the next day, they know they can proceed with their evil plans! And what about technology for the rider? Again Smart phones have been utilised to supply us with Apps that log journeys and can send out messages in the case of an accident. NFC stickers are now available that can be programmed with Next of Kin and important medical information in particular. They can even be programmed to call a certain number in case of an accident. This means anyone with a Smart phone can access details that you would like passed on without having to take your helmet off and if you are unable to tell anyone yourself. We are often out riding alone with wallets and bags tucked away in pockets and panniers, so this technology can be a great help. Make the most of this emerging technology. We will all own Smart phones in the not too distant future and the features available are simple to set up and use and very cost effective. Have a look at the options available and see which system is best for you and your budget. ENDURANCE ANTICS

MOPED MAYHEM!

Looking through Facebook Chris Pugh came upon a post from Nick Tunstill, “Does anyone fancy a 6 hour mopedathon?” Well, as it happened he had his youngest son’s Yamaha Jog in the garage so he looked into it further and decided it looked like a laugh.

T

he event was put on by RAF Odiham Motorcycle Club in aid of the RAF benevolent fund. I got together a team consisting of my two sons James and Stephen and family friend Matt Botterman. We sent off our entry and then prepared the scooter for racing, this involved taping up headlamps and fitting fuel and electric cut offs. The day arrived and we made our way to RAF Odiham in Oxfordshire. The race is a 6 hour endurance which is run purely for fun, there are no winners; it’s just a challenge to keep the bike going for 6 hours non-stop. The course is made up of straw bales and cones and is run three hours one way then the other. After the race briefing we lined up for the Le Mans style start with Stephen going first. The flag dropped and Stephen – not having raced before – casually walked over to the bike, he had only just passed his full bike test so with caution in mind he looked over 18

his right shoulder before pulling away! However he soon got into the race and was circulating well. He handed over to James for his first stint, who also ran very keenly, then to Matt, who it must be said as a 17st 6ft rugby player I thought would kill the bike but, although completely dwarfing the thing and bottoming out the suspension, he did very well. Having instructed them all to pace themselves for the long race so that we would ensure the moped lasted the six hours I finally had my turn, within a lap the old racing days came flooding back and upon pulling back into the pit to change over riders I was confronted by James asking “What happened to saving the bike?” I had no answer, but because of my actions I had inadvertently given the green light to thrash the pants out of it! The rest of the field consisted

of a mix of stripped down twist and goes, Honda C70s, and one Aprilla, all in various conditions. Some looked like they were pulled from under a hedge; some like the guy had stolen his sister’s daily commute. As the day wore on it became more and more competitive, less of an endurance ride and more of a race! There were some really good personal battles going on. Our little Jog made it to the end with only minor damage where Stephen dropped it but apart from that it was still going strong. I was surprised to see so many of the bikes and riders still there at the close of the day, with only a few bikes and two riders taken to hospital. (I did say it got very competitive!) We have now found out that they also run similar events at two other airbases throughout the year so we will be entering these in 2014.

MAG APPOINTS LEMBIT ÖPIK

Winter! Ha!! It’s still been reasonably sunny enough to ride the bike this past few weeks, though in parts it’s been rather damp — or John Mitchell, National MAG Chairman, was anyway, by the time he got back to Sussex from MAG Central Office in leafy Warwickshire recently.

T

The MAG South East Region Committee taken at East Sussex Wheels to Work, with Lembit Öpik

hanks to everyone who has written to either the Attorney General’s office or the Lord Chancellor/Secretary of State for Justice, Chris Grayling, regarding the sentencing of Brian Hampton whose actions lead to the death of Jade Clark. MAG is now part of the sentencing review consultation (into causing death or injury by driving), which will be taking place later this year. To me, a car can be used as a weapon and it should be treated as such. Who knows if our government will ever be as enlightened as the US in that respect? I can only hope. To be honest, the best Christmas present we could wish for came out of the EU Parliament on the 18th of December, with the news that the EU PTI requirements (Super MoT to the rest of us) have been derogated to the individual member states, meaning that if there’s already an MoT in place (as

20

we have here) then we will not be lumbered for any more stringent tests. This is thanks to the combined effort of all the motorcycling organisations that make up FEMA – and others – who lobbied their MEPs. Not only has it worked for bikes, the EU Parliament has actually agreed the same for cars as well. Hopefully, this means that the Super MoT is dead in the water as far as we are concerned! One of the things I’ve tried to achieve in my first year as National Chairman is to raise MAG’s profile to make us the true voice of motorcycling. I’m rather pleased to announce we’ve recently appointed our new Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Lembit Öpik who, along with our Campaigns and Policy Adviser Leon Mannings spearheads our campaigning team. I hope that this is the start of something big for the organisation, with him putting his considerable talents to good use. He February-March 2014 • South East Biker Magazine

will of course be at various MAG events throughout the next year (possibly, including our local Lock Up Your Sheep rally at Middle Farm near Firle on the first weekend in September – big Lembit Öpik and John Mitchell, MAG plug!). Lembit recently attended National Chairman the South East Region Committee investigating the state of Madeira Drive, meeting, where he introduced Brighton himself to the local branch representatives and outlined his plans for the role, as well as MAG’s future campaign strategy. Even though he only joined us at the end of November, he has already hit the ground running and has already signed up 16 MPs as MAG members! One of the first things Lembit has got involved with, is a local issue to the South East; the Brighton Speed Trials. You may have seen a petition going round calling for the event to be reinstated after the tragedy of 2012 when Charlotte Tagg was killed. Working with Joe Greening, Brighton (and now

South East Region) MAG’s Political Officer, they investigated the story behind the petition and found a lot more than just an excuse to bash the Greens in Brighton & Hove City Council. The infrastructure around the Madeira Drive area is crumbling, meaning that spectators aren’t able to watch the event safely from the promenade and also there’s a major financial cost to Brighton and the shopkeepers, as part of the beach and Volks Railway have to be closed; as well as the shops under the arches. I sincerely hope that the council will sort out the road surface on Madeira Drive and do some of the work necessary to keep the event running. The way things have been going in the past few weeks with MAG, 2014 looks like it’s going to be a brilliant year! Ride Free, John Mitchell, MAG South East Rep and National Chairman

EVOLUTION PAINTWORK

EVOLUTION OF A BEEMER Martin Watts at Evolution Paintwork tells us about a restoration job on a BMW R100 RS.

A

customer of mine approached me to do the paintwork on his 1981 BMW R100 RS Limited Edition restoration job. He had bought the bike new in 1981 and, as the colour he wanted was only available in Germany, he travelled there to pick it up and ride it back to the UK. It had its fair share of wear and tear over the last 30odd years so he asked me to recreate the lovely original colour scheme of metallic graphite grey with double gold pinstripes on all the panels! The panels needed some repairs which I carried out before priming them. Once they were flatted down, I painted the panels in metallic graphite grey base coat and sprayed a couple of coats of lacquer on top to seal the paint. The panels then had to be flatted again before I began the most important stage of the job – the pinstripes. I used fine-line tape to outline the double stripes where I could and masked the rest of each panel. I was then able to airbrush on the gold. Although this was a very time consuming part of the job it was important to get it spot-on and it was well worth the time and effort to get a superior quality of finish. Once I was absolutely happy with the pinstripe results I gave the panels three more coats of lacquer and polished them up ready for my customer to pick up. A few weeks later he let me know the bike was complete. It looked amazing – all the parts were original or had been replaced with genuine BMW either direct from the manufacturer or traced from other sellers. So much care and attention had been put into the full “nut and bolt” restoration, and the freshly painted panels finished it off beautifully. 22

ENDURO

Boxing Day Enduro

Above: Simon Clarke Below: Gav Maggs

The weather conditions and amount of rain prior to The BXDE could not have been worse but hats off to the Witley & District MCC as they worked tirelessly to make sure the event with a full entry of 180 riders went ahead and wisely shortened the lap so that the lower skill level riders could endure the wrath of Slab Common. Article and Photos: Teamsnapper.co.uk SANDBLASTIC BOLTER CHAMPIONSHIP CLASS: Daryl Bolter and Slab Common are a perfect combination akin to Bread and Butter or Tea and Biscuits and today was no different. He led from start to finish except lap one which was led by expert Ben Wibberley. Aaron Smith on a borrowed bike that would have been better suited in Lord Montagu’s Motor Museum at Beaulieu and he put an amazing show on to keep with Bolter and kept the huge crowd entertained. Alas it was short lived as the old girl took in too much water but still managed 3rd place. Bolter controlled proceedings at the front to take victory and post fastest lap of the day, runner up Dan Alldred who was not that keen to start but had a blinding race and looked the happiest out there and certainly enjoyed his BXDE. 24

EXPERT CLASS: Ben Wibberley not only won his class but also 2nd overall, the only other rider to match Bolter’s 16 laps. He also led the race for a lap and posted fastest lap of class, so a very successful day for Ben and his new steed. Runner up in class and 3rd overall was The Kerbinator, Mark Kirby who just never gives in and in these conditions he was like a pig in pooh and very much deserved his result, 3rd . In his first ride as an Expert rider was Dom Wilson who shocked me today with his grit and aggressiveness and that formula sure worked well for the expectant father to be. VET A CLASS: My prediction for this class top 3 was not too bad as got 2 out of the 3. The missing one did get fastest lap of the class before his DNF, which left Steve White, Daz Lee and James Brown fighting for the win and I feel justice prevailed today as for so many events and races Steve White is the bridesmaid. Today he nailed it from Veteran newcomer Daz Lee who will be a class contender next year, 3rd on a new bike and new kit which totally threw me was James Brown.... no, not the Soul Master, but James Brown the Sand Master and he certainly enjoyed his BXDE with one of his best rides ever. VET B CLASS: Many things can be heard whistling through the trees at Slab Common and some will unnerve you others make you chuckle but nothing can prepare you for the sound of Martin Turner on his 125 two stroke having its engine screaming, swinging arm deep in sand being strangled within an inch of its life for 12 laps. But, as the saying goes, “Treat ‘em mean to keep them keen” and believe me that 125 smoker was keen, keen enough to take the class win and fastest lap in class although he was kept on his toes by the likeable Lewie Davis. Davis seems to have his appetite for the sport back which is great to see, 3rd and I can assure you he will be still smiling with that result, was Peter Moller.

Paul Negus and Nick Summers

CLUBMAN B CLASS: Brett Wilkinson won this class but had to battle hard against Brad Warton (Runner Up) , both were so equally matched lap after lap it was a shame for both not to share top spot. Chris Welch did not look like he was enjoying himself but, true to character, he kept moving and will be delighted with a podium. SPORTSMAN/EVO CLASS: Not often a Trials bike will beat an Enduro bike but, in such conditions like today and with the skill of the rider, Miles Carruthers took victory. From what I could see he never looked that much in trouble, runner up was the big man from The West, Kirk Giles, who will never forget his first visit to Slab Common. 3rd was Chris Heane who seemed to find a rhythm and tempo and just kept to it and produced a deserved podium. Evo class was won by popular SEEC stalwart Colin Fox who also got fastest lap in class as well. Dave Owen

CLUBMAN A CLASS: Gav Maggs certainly knows when to dig deep to try and find that little bit extra. Today he dug deep, not only to take the win, but to have kept the pack behind him when it mattered and was very much the class act. The pack leader was West Country rider Brendan Griffiths who was a true Wild West rider today and hung on to his steed like a rodeo and gave great entertainment value, 3rd was Niles Reid who, as usual, battled with good friend Josh Kirby who can take solace as he managed to get fastest lap of class. ell actually just outside Edenbridge at Skitts Manor Farm, so check where you are going before setting off. It’s out in the sticks but there are some cracking roads around that part of the world. The business is based in a large unit with plenty of off road parking and contains a good range of bikes, from scooters, offroaders, adventure bikes to a rather nice MV Augusta and a tasty Benelli currently. Run by motorcycle enthusiasts with a lot of trade and mechanical experience, JB Motorcycles is an independent dealer specialising in offering decent motorbikes at reasonable prices. The unit is fully equipped with its own fully equipped service section so all machines are thoroughly checked and serviced if required before leaving the shop. James, who founded the business, showed us around and explained his approach to buying and selling bikes. He is not interested in simply 26

shifting units but with matching up a customer’s requirements to an appropriate bike. You will often obtain a better part exchange deal on your existing bike than a main dealer, where they are often limited in their offers by book values. James knows the true and current worth of a motorbike, which as we know tends to change quite frequently depending on demand and fashions. He will also offer part exchange on certain cars. We were very impressed with James’s enthusiasm and knowledge, he is passionate about his business and bikes, and this always give you confidence when February-March 2014 • South East Biker Magazine

CELEBRATION

“Riding one of these things flat-out for five minutes is more than most people do in their entire life” BURT MUNRO

BURT MUNRO • CHALLENGE•

S

The world’s fastest Indian is one of the best motorcycle films ever made. It tells the true story of Burt Munro’s valiant challenge on the world speed record at Bonneville. Each year his achievements are celebrated at the Burt Munro Challenge (28th November-1st December 2013) in his homeland of New Zealand. British Ex Pat Chris Kingham fills us in on some of the details…

o who is Burt Munro? He was a professional speedway racer who raced at the top level. He became a motorcycle salesman and mechanic. Burt bought a 1920 Indian Scout with an original top speed of 55mph. He worked tirelessly on limited funds in his shed, often through the night, to gradually convert the 600cc machine to a 950cc capable of taking on the world’s fastest machines. Burt made a lot of his own parts and tools as his job as a motorcycle salesman didn’t pay enough to allow for any decent investment in the Indian. For example, he would cast parts in old tins, make his own barrels, pistons, flywheels, etc. His micrometer (a precision measuring instrument) was an old spoke. He visited the Bonneville Salt Flats several times in the 60s setting three records. On one trip 28

he recorded a speed of 200mph on a qualifying run. When Burt was 68 when he set the record for the under 1000cc machines in 1967 at nearly 184mph, which included faster times in the official total. He also happened to be riding a 47 year old bike!

When “The World’s Fastest Indian” came out in 2005, it captured the public’s imagination, demonstrating that age, finances and circumstances can be overcome if the determination is there. The fact that he used the same original motorbike and gradually

modified it for nearly 50 years is something that would be unheard of in these days of constant upgrades and tweaks and where a three year old machine is out of date. However the spirit of Burt Munro lingers on in many motorcyclists today partly due to the economic slump of the last few years, and the fact that most bikers like to modify their machines, bike building using classic and veteran bikes is highly popular. Long may it continue… So the Kiwis quite rightly celebrate Burt Munro’s life and exploits each year with a week long festival of motorbike events. The Burt Munro Challenge takes place at Southland, New Zealand at the end of November each year. South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

WEALD TECHNOLOGY

BIG NEWS

Phil Edwards updates South East Biker on his ground breaking electric engineering company’s progress.

S

ussex based Weald Technology secures grant to develop world-beating electric motorcycle. Uckfieldbased Weald Technology Ltd is leading a consortium of three companies that has been awarded a £120,000 development grant from the Technology Strategy Board to develop the world’s quickest electric motorcycle. The grant, which has been awarded through the ‘Motorsport Valley Launchpad’, encourages small companies involved in motorsport to collaborate and develop low-carbon or lightweight products which have the potential for exploitation across other industry sectors. Weald Technology is working with Gem MC Ltd and Lyra Electronics Ltd, and will use the project as a novel and spectacular way of demonstrating their

30

innovative power-source and electric motor, targeting applications in rail, heavy-goods, and military vehicles. Having designed and built the UK’s quickest electric motorcycle in 2011 the team at Weald have been planning this super-fast machine for two years, and the grant is the catalyst they’ve been seeking to get it underway. Phil Edwards, Managing Director of Weald Technology, told us “This is fantastic news. We’ve been trying to get this project off the ground for a long time; the grant adds credibility and will help us secure the additional funds that we personally need to contribute.” The world-beating motorcycle will also be used to showcase how the UK leads the world in automotive, motorsport, and low-carbon engineering. Phil is a STEM Ambassador in Sussex, working with local schools to

promote STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). He added “This motorcycle really grabs attention, and shows some of the exciting work that technology companies are involved in. There are fantastic careers available, and anyone keen to pursue these subjects will be welcomed by an industry which is desperate to recruit and train more people.” The project will kick off in 2014 once the team has raised its share of the costs. They are seeking investors and sponsors keen to get involved in breaking records and developing future transport. Phil can be contacted on 01825 761890 or phil@weald-tech.co.uk

We have teamed up with Simon Thorne, of Thorne Fitness, to produce a series of articles to improve your biking fitness so will you get more your riding… Now motorcyclists may not realise the importance of being physically fit, but if you enjoy your motorbiking whether it’s track days, enduro, green laning, racing or just a trip out with some mates on a Sunday social then this will only be enhanced if you’re more In tune with your bike and your body.

Over the coming articles I will be looking into rider fitness, with a look into just getting rid of that spare tyre, getting the most out of a track day, off-road riding fitness, pre-season fitness and off-season fitness for competitive riders and much more! CHARITY

THE BIKE EXPERIENCE ‘The Bike Experience’ may be small, and you may never have heard of it, but to bikers with disabilities it is lifechanging. Based at Silverstone race circuit, this self-funding charity aims to get disabled bikers back on a bike – people who thought they would never ride again. Clients have included paraplegics, MS and Parkinson’s sufferers, stroke victims, riders with severe rheumatoid arthritis, and exservicemen who have lost limbs in theatres of war. There really is no limit. Sandy Caulfield fills us in...

T

he Bike Experience was founded in 2011 by paraplegic Olympic skier and Moto GP racer, Talan Skeels-Piggins, and his associate Russell O’Neill. Talan says, “For me riding a motorcycle is freedom from the wheelchair. The wheelchair is a form of prison. The day I got back on my bike, following my accident, was the best day of my life. I wanted to give other people that chance not to feel disabled again, in any shape or form.” Talan was severely injured in a motorcycle accident and 32

paralysed from the chest down. He later represented Britain in the Olympics as a skier. Determined to ride a bike again, he bought a motorcycle and adapted it, and took himself off to Castle Coombe in Wiltshire where, as he puts it, he tried and fell off, tried and fell off, until he succeeded in riding the bike. ‘The Bike Experience’ now has four motorcycles. Two are Manas on loan from Aprilia, automatic 850 twins which Talan says “inspire confidence in nervous riders, and are a really good ride”. The other two are Suzuki SV650s, one of

which has landing legs so that the bike will not fall over when it comes to a halt. On a typical Bike Experience day, riders start with a 30m straight ride. They are launched from a standing start by a launch team, and caught by another team so that they remain upright when stopped. The day progresses at the rider’s own pace, and moves on to longer rides and u-turns. Disabled biker Joanne Connors, who has suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis for over 20 years, says, “Having any long-term condition or disability can seem to stop your life in its tracks. The Bike Experience was wonderful.

All those memories and the great feeling you get from biking came rushing back. With the help of the catchers, they turned me round and I headed back to the other end. I came to a stop and got some great encouragement from the team. It all became a bit much, and I started crying, as I never thought I’d feel this again.” Paraplegic Steve Jones is paralysed from the chest down, and in 2011 had the chance to ride for a day with The Bike Experience. He says, “I cannot tell you how chuffed I was afterwards. I was smiling like a Cheshire cat and I couldn’t stop telling people about it for weeks.” He has gone on from that one day to ride with the Bike Experience as part of the ‘World’s First and Only All Paraplegic Race Team’ in Assen 2013. Another of the Bike Experience customers, Elfed Weaver, went home from the day and quietly bought himself a bike, adapted it, took it to the Isle of Man, and completed a lap of the Manx TT route. No fuss. No bother. But lifechanging nonetheless. But putting big dreams aside, it is the impact on the lives of ordinary people like Joanne and Steve, that inspires Talan and his team at The Bike Experience to continue their tireless work, whether the day helps someone to get back on their bike on a regular basis or simply helps them to put some demons to bed. Charity co-ordinator, Anthony Kirwan says, “To ride a bike one more time is enough for some, and a stepping stone for others.” Joanne says of the Bike Experience team, “I’m hoping to go back to The Bike Experience in 2014, and am considering volunteering for them myself, even if it’s only making the tea. It’s such an amazing charity, with such wonderful people.” The future for the Bike Experience is uncertain. It was funded initially by Talan himself, and in 2013 was lucky enough to secure £10,000 grant from “Awards For All” Big Lottery Fund. Aprilia sponsor the two Manas at present and the charity organisers hope that this will continue. Each year, the Bike Experience aim to provide between ten and twelve experience days at Silverstone. £10,000. The experience day is free, as the organisers do not want cost to prevent anybody from taking up this amazing opportunity. As Talan so perfectly puts it, “In the biking community we try to look after one another”. More information about The Bike Experience can be found on their website www.tbex.co.uk There is an inquiry form at:http://www.tbex. co.uk/index.php/contact-us/enquiry-via-website; email:TeamTBEX@gmail.com; Facebook https://www. facebook.com/pages/The-Bike-Experience/10181099 6578296?fref=ts; or Twitter @TeamTBEX If you would like to help, The Bike Experience are always glad to meet new volunteers, who will be given training in how to launch and catch disabled riders on the day.
