Editor scribes With all the political turmoil currently unfolding, it’s a great feeling these days to put on a helmet and take off on your bike somewhere to escape it all. Plenty of modern daily life is now taken up by being constantly bombarded by technology; emails, phone notifications and all sorts of beeps pinging at us non-stop. Sometimes you need some time away from the likes of Google and Amazon, who seem to be tracking your every movement. Of course, technology has had a big impact on motorcycling as well and some of it is extremely useful. But the essence of biking is still as fresh as it was 100 years ago. A sense of freedom, adventure and individuality in a bland world still remains every time you press the starter button (or kickstart the engine!). It’s not just the riding that is a pleasure and an escape though. Simply owning a motorcycle, cleaning and maintaining it or adding some special bits are part of the enjoyment. Then you can also watch people far more talented than you doing amazing things with their machines, from road racing to extreme trials and the likes of the Dakar Rally. If you have any time left you can even read about bikes and biking! This is the time of year when bikers across the UK start to make their plans for 2019, get their machines ready for spring and maybe consider some more training, track days or a tour. The Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle Show at Excel in February is a great place to fire up your biking year.

MOTORCYCLE REVIEW

CAFÉ RACER

H IS FOR HERALD I

Ray Cross tries out a British designed café racer

f I were to ask you to name a bike manufacturer beginning with the letter H chances are you’d reply, Honda or Harley Davidson. Like me, you probably wouldn’t have the brand Herald spring to mind, but maybe it’s time that changed. Herald Motor Company are based in Cambridgeshire and specialise in the design and creation of dapper yet simplistic motorcycles. Their aim is to ‘put a smile on the rider’s face and not a hole in their pocket’. They offer a range of stylish motorcycles ranging from 125cc right up to 400cc, with a 500cc in the pipeline. Today, courtesy of a lovely gentleman by the name of John Rooster — owner of John Rooster customs — I was going to ride not only my first Herald, but also be the first journalist in the

8

country to ride the Herald café 400 (perks of the job, aye). RETRO IMAGE, MODERN RELIABILITY The way this bike looks is really something special. Herald say, “the café 400’s vintage looks will satisfy your sixties’ racer nostalgia”, and if I had been around then and knew how to type up this article as I’m doing, I’d say it does exactly that. The Herald has captured the retro image with the reliability of modern mechanicals. It features among other things; twin front discs, adjustable front and rear shocks, clip-ons, and a stylish tank. The cream paint coupled with the twin exhausts give this machine a proper ‘head turner’ status. Stationary admiring over, it’s time to start it up and see what it’s like out on a blast.

MOTORCYCLE REVIEW

The single cylinder, Honda-based engine, fires up with a delightful rumbling spitting out from the two exhausts; even on idle this has a lovely soundtrack. The seating position is upright and comfy, with the clip-ons an easy reach so you don’t feel unbalanced. The bike has an aura of quality, I especially liked the attention to detail around the top yoke. Out on the road, and leaving a traffic-clogged village, I was able to stretch its legs. The engine, though boasting 27bhp, pulled willingly as I started to make good progress. I did find gear changes awkward though because the lever hadn’t been adjusted to suit me. The five-speed box was smooth and positive with neutral being selected when opted for, and not when you’re leaving a bike meet trying to show off. Why does that always happen? Braking was reassuring on a damp surface, and had a good feel through the levers. Cornering on the bike felt genuinely fun, with a nice low centre of gravity. Being 165kg (dry) it was easy to manoeuvre whilst filtering, when reluctantly parking it and for the end of the test ride. Despite nervousness brought on by the responsibility and the cold, I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in the saddle as it felt so flickable in the corners and planted on the straights. Unfortunately, I couldn’t give it ‘free rein’ as it was new.

In summary, I believe this bike would be great for riders who don’t want the expense, complication and weight of other mainstream products. At £4,499 with a generous two-year warranty, Herald seemed to have achieved their aim. With thanks to John Rooster, Skibbs Lane, Chelsfield, Orpington. BR6 7RH. PRODUCT REVIEW

KEEPING OUT THE BIG CHILL

In the last issue of SEB we had a look at the thermal armour from Exotogg. Nick Tunstill has been testing this innovative product further over the winter.

O

ver the gloomier months in the UK you can pretty much guarantee it will be cold and layer up accordingly, and Exotogg is a great piece of equipment for this purpose. But one of its strengths is that you can wear it uninflated and then blow it up when temperatures drop or carry it with you as an emergency back up. So we have been testing it out on the Spanish roads and trails where the winter is more like an English spring. When the sun is out it can be warm, but ride over a mountain, and there are plenty of those in Spain, and temperatures drop sharply.

I tried it out on a few winter rides and was impressed overall with the Exotogg’s effectiveness and flexibility. A couple of my more fashionconscious biker mates commented on the appearance, and you do look a bit like the Michelin man when it’s inflated. However, I am not one of life’s fashion followers and I tend to select biking kit for its purpose rather than its visual appeal to others. The Exotogg packs down well enough to be stowed away in a topbox or rucksack and can be inflated quickly when required. The only niggly part of it is the side straps

PRODUCT REVIEW and panniers. You also experience a wide range of temperature fluctuations. Sometimes you will be riding hard and working up a sweat and then you could take a rest or find yourself at a higher altitude and suddenly your core temperature can drop quickly. Of course, if the worse happens, you could come off the bike, injure yourself and spend some time waiting for help. Without painting a doom and gloom scenario, it’s always best to be prepared for various eventualities and the Exotogg could come in handy at some point. A bit like that puncture repair kit that you may always carry “just in case”.

are loose bits of Velcro. They work, but I think that part of the design could be tweaked a bit. For trail riding weight is even more of an issue as you are unlikely to be lugging around topboxes

For the cost and convenience, I think Exotogg is something worth taking a closer look at for any kind of biking (or other outdoor) activity. It’s a one off purchase and requires no subscription, upgrades or maintenance. Exotogg are offering SEB readers a very generous 20% discount for a time limited offer. They are also exhibiting at the MCN London Show at Excel on stand A71. www.exotogg.com

ALL ABOUT HOLLY

ALL ABOUT HOLLY

CELEBRATING WOMEN WHO RIDE Holly Flint organises a biking get-together

W

ell, hello SEB mag readers. Welcome to my first article for the magazine. I am honoured to be here. I hope you are all well and enjoyed the fantastic long summer of 2018 — just perfect for riding. I was invited to become a writer for SEB magazine to bring a bit of variety, and a female rider’s perspective over to you lovely readers. We’ve gotta get more women encouraged to ride, I mean what’s not to like about girls and motorbikes right? Last November, I hosted an event, alongside a fellow biker chick friend, Corrina, to celebrate women who ride. We thought it would be a really lovely idea to get a whole bunch of female riders together to meet up and get to know each other. We didn’t want to exclude the guys and wanted everyone to be welcome, so we kept the event open to all, and asked the girls to bring along whoever they usually ride with.

12

We had such an amazing day. We started at The Bike Shed in East London, which if you haven’t yet visited then you really need to. It’s a restaurant, lounge, shop, barbers, and basically, just a cool place to be. Everyone met there and got to know each other, we grabbed a drink and had a bite to eat. After the standard biker procedure of all checking out each other’s bikes in the parking area, we then headed out for a little ride. The weather was definitely on our side, crisp and sunny with blue skies. My partner, Albie, managed to get some pictures of us all riding through the city while riding himself. We made our way over to Leake

ALL ABOUT HOLLY St Arches, a place we thought would be great for some piccies as it’s a large tunnel full of very cool graffiti art, with a few cafés and bars inside. Once there, we met with the professional photographers from Bike Shoot – they specialise in biking photography. They were just amazing and kindly offered up their time to come along and support us. The amount of lighting equipment they rocked up with made us all feel like we were on a film set. We had been running a little competition on the event’s Facebook page to offer the first ten girls who responded with a 1:1 shoot with the photographers, so they grabbed some great shots of the girls and their rides. It added a sense of fun to the day and was lovely to see the confidence growing within the ladies as we stood around shouting words of encouragement. The day was also covered by Charlie from Hairpin Journal, an online community and magazine focusing on women on the road, who will be putting a piece together on it for us too. All in all, it was an epic day with incredible people, and not just a celebration of women who ride, but of the biking community as a whole.

The girls (and guys) had travelled from all over to attend, some came on their own not knowing anyone, and ended the day with new friends to ride with, which was exactly our intention for this event, and what I think the true essence of riding is really about. Although it was our first event, it definitely won’t be our last. Maybe see you at the next one? For discussions, debates, pictures, videos and for future events, you can find me on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube as @allaboutholly. Until next time!

VINTAGE TO VOLTAGE

VINTAGE TO VOLTAGE PART ONE

Journalist Paul Blezard and his friend Carla McKenzie trail-rode a pair of volt-powered Zeroes to Paris and back last September, aided and abetted by a small team of fellow members of the Trail Riders’ Fellowship. ‘Blez’ tells the story.

M

y friend Carla McKenzie has a penchant for electric motorcycles, which I share. After two memorable cross-country electric adventures with me on two different borrowed Zeroes and an Energica Eva she splashed the cash on a 2017 Zero DSR of her own, in September 2017. Last summer she hatched another big ‘Amp Adventure’ which, paradoxically, came about due to her increased familiarity with old British bikes and the masochists who ride them, following her move from Wiltshire to Hastings, shortly after buying the Zero.

14

The idea for ‘Vintage to Voltage’ was born during an evening Carla spent with classic bike enthusiast and show organiser Julie Diplock. It would be a triple-challenge: to ride a new American electric bike and an ancient British one, a 1926

Triumph, from London to Paris, but also to take in a lot of trails and byways along the way and raise some money for three worthy causes. A September 2018 date for the trip was fixed, press releases were written and despatched,

February-March 2019 • South East Biker Magazine

VINTAGE TO VOLTAGE a blog was started and both ladies appeared with their machines at the Ardingly Summer Classic Bike Show that Julie organises, on July 15th. Zero’s main man in the UK, Dale Robinson, agreed to lend me a 2018 DSR to join the ride to Paris and back and our Wiltshire TRF friend, James Higgs, said he’d join us on his Honda CRF 250L. Three other TRF stalwarts got involved as well: Heritage Director Steve Neville agreed to ride his own 2015 Zero from London to Newhaven with us, Steve Sharp would guide us across his local Surrey lanes and TRF Technical Director John Vannuffel rashly agreed to guide us from Dieppe to Paris and back, using as much of the Trans European Trail as seemed sensible. Our start date was Tuesday September 18th and I picked up the demo 2018 DSR on the

The official London departure point was the south side of Lambeth Bridge. Next was a tongue-in-cheek stop outside Warr’s, the oldest and best-known Harley-Davidson dealer in the UK, because the local council have presciently provided EV chargepoints in anticipation of the new Electric H-D LiveWire that is due to go on sale later this year.

evening of the Sunday before. On Monday we heard from Julie that she was in agony with back problems and even after a trip to the osteopath the ride to Paris was out of the question. This also took her partner Rick out of the equation, along with his back-up van. It was quickly decided to go ahead

with the trip regardless, using Carla’s Land Rover Discovery as back-up vehicle and her partner, Mark, driving it. It was a real shame to lose Julie and the whole ‘vintage’ aspect of the challenge, but we felt it was still well worth doing. It was just that now the emphasis would be more on the ‘voltage’.

The adventure starts in store

DAY 1: LONDON TO EAST HORSLEY From our meeting place in Hyde Park, I led our motley band of motorcyclists across South West London to Brooklands via a series of scenic and relevant photo stops. It was a privilege to ride on the last remaining section of the hallowed Brooklands banking, where, until the track was closed in 1939, heroic men and women thundered along at over 100mph. We also got the electric bikes plugged into the mains while we had a quick look around the excellent museum and had some lunch in the adjoining café. Our stop for the night was at a well-equipped campsite in East Horsley. Jimmy, Steve and I took the opportunity to ride some of the nearby Surrey lanes. I was very glad that the steep and deeply rutted chalk descent into Shere was dry, because

on the 190kg Zero it was still tricky, especially since the bike’s Bosch ABS system proved unable to cope with the loose surface and simply let the brakes off altogether for several seconds at one point! Steve Neville showed me how to switch off the ABS on the Zero, but it’s quite a rigmarole and my aging brain failed to memorise the procedure. Ironically, Steve fell victim to another Zero quirk only a couple of minutes later when his 2015 DS spat him off as he pulled out onto the A25. With the monstrous amounts of torque available from zero revs, it’s really not a good idea to just whack open the throttle, even on dry tarmac, unless you’re pointing dead ahead. At the campsite we were able to plug all three Zeroes into the traditional campsite sockets. We also had a pair of QuiQ chargers with us, which halve the charge time for a full charge from eight hours to four. It was just as well we did, because in the morning Steve discovered that his Zero had mysteriously stopped charging when it was only half full. With the aid of the Quiq charger he was able to get up to 100% before we left. DAY 2: EAST HORSLEY TO NEWHAVEN We met up with our morning run leader, Steve Sharp, of Surrey TRF, at the café opposite

the scenic Newlands Corner viewpoint, near Guildford. Steve led us up and down some of the best lanes in the area, but excluded the most challenging ones in deference to Carla’s relative lack of confidence on her Zero. The highlight was Wolvens Lane, which runs south from the A25 for several miles to the village of Coldharbour and Leith Hill. Steve led us as far as a petrol station near Horsham, and by the time we got there it was raining quite hard, so we were glad to take a break with a coffee and a bite to eat under cover. Fortunately it had stopped by the time we got going again. James Higgs took over as run leader all the way to Newhaven. There are very few byways in Sussex, but James took us along a couple of corkers near Brighton and Lewes, and

got us to them via a scenic tarmac route. When we got to Newhaven the staff at the terminal let us plug into the mains while we waited for our time to go through customs and board. John Vannuffel, our run leader for France, turned up on cue, his KTM 690 equipped with a double GPS set-up; one for the intricacies of the TET trails, and the other for the overall route to our destination and the quickest road route to it, just in case. We also plugged the Zeroes into the mains on the DFDS ferry although neither bike recharged as much as we had hoped during the four-hour voyage, but it didn’t matter since we only had a few miles to ride from Dieppe, to a guest house that John V had wisely booked in advance. One of the aims of the trip was to raise cash for worthy causes; the Dougie Dalziel Memorial Trust, the Kent, Sussex, and Surrey Air Ambulance and the The Joan Seeley Pain Relief Memorial Trust. PART TWO CONTINUES IN THE NEXT ISSUE The blog, complete with the charity details, is at: www.vintagetovoltage.wordpress.com Our friend Andy Marsh has put together a 6-minute video about our adventure which can be viewed at: http://bit.ly/VintagetoVoltage

SEAT SPECIALISTS

ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY?

KEEPING COMFORTABLE ON THE ROAD Is your ride a little hard? Do you struggle to touch the ground when sitting on your bike? Fancy a warmer posterior in winter? Or would you just like to add some personalisation to your machine? Providing everything from a simple re-cover to a bespoke design with embroidery, Viking Motorcycle Seats sort out Nick Tunstill’s posterior…

W

e often hear bikers complain that a certain motorcycle is uncomfortable or too high for them and unfortunately this can mean them dismissing a new purchase or selling their existing bike without trying to find a simple solution. Levers, pegs and suspension can be moved or altered to make the riding position more suitable but the seat can often be overlooked. I wanted to make my Honda CRF250L a little more usable for shorter riders so bought a spare seat and took a trip to Viking Motorcycle Seats so they could work their magic. Smaller trail bikes are not designed to be particularly comfortable as much of the time you are standing up and unlikely to be doing longer trips. This means having the seat foam scooped is a simple fix to reduce the ride height by a good inch or so. It may not seem a lot but that can mean the difference between teetering on tip toes and feeling securely planted. Bradley at Viking removed the existing cover, which was in good condition being new, and set to work with his tools. He marked up the foam and then skilfully removed a decent chunk of it. He then replaced the original cover to retain the same profile and keeping the Honda lettering in proportion to the lines of the bike. Bradley

18

made it look simple but it wouldn’t be something I would like to have a go at myself. Years of experience have meant Viking turn out brilliant products with attention to the finest detail. Within a short time I now had a perfect replacement seat that can be swapped in seconds but transforms the bike for a shorter rider. A simple and cost effective solution to a common problem! Viking Motorcycle Seats have over 20 years’ experience in this field so know what they are doing. If you have a tatty seat or the upholstery is showing its age, they can replicate the original and restore it to its former glory. Sometimes it just needs a refoaming but if the cover is ageing this can be replaced. Customisation is very popular now. Whether it’s a cruiser, race rep, scooter or simply just something close to your heart, Viking can

make you something practical and distinctive. This includes not only standard vinyls but faux materials such as crocodile, elephant and snake skin. Whatever takes your fancy! Maybe it’s advancing years but I am sure bike seats were more comfortable in the 70’s. If you find your current ride too hard why not consider

gel inserts? Debbie from SEB has always used Viking to improve the stock seats on her sports bikes. If you find the colder months affecting your backside why not have some heated pads inserted while the other work is being done? I had this done on the seat of my Tiger. It was a lot cheaper than a factory fitted option but was simple to use and very welcoming in the winter. There is a connection to the battery and a switch and the pads can be added to the rider’s seat, pillion or both. We advise you call Viking Motorcycle Seats before dropping in to see them but it is possible at certain times to have your seat worked on while you wait, depending on the complexity of the project. MOTOGIRL

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS Tonbridge business duo, Ina Lombard-Ogilvie and Ellen Ogilvie of Motogirl, are on the fast track to global domination in the competitive world of ladies’ motorcycle clothing.

L

aunched 3 years ago, Motogirl was set up by Ina, 43, and Ellen, 26, fuelled by a shared passion for motorcycles. What started out as a small local business based at their shop in Kent, is now a global wholesale and online retail company, with over 100 retail stockists, across 14 countries and customers as far afield as Canada, South Africa and Australia.

20

The lack of comfortable, stylish and fashionable protective motorcycle clothing that women would wear was the reason the entrepeneurial duo decided to create, manufacture and distribute their own range of clothing, created for women, by women, utilising high-tech protective materials such as Kevlar, but cut to flatter women of all shapes and sizes. Launching their Kevlar Leggings three years

ago, they have since added to their growing catalogue of products with Kevlar Jackets and Jeans, Waterproofs, Casual Wear with plenty more to come in 2019. Garments are also made available in a wide range of sizes, from 4-28, as well as catering for three different leg lengths to ensure Motogirl customers get the perfect fit in all impact areas. It’s not surprising that they have received such an overwhelming response since the number of female motorcyclists has dramatically increased, and is still on the up. Today 14% of motorcycle

riders are female according to surveys, with an increase of over 50% in the last 10 years. As for the future, it’s full speed ahead for Motogirl, who are introducing new products, expanding its distribution network and online sales. You’ll be able to find MotoGirl products at the Infinity Motorcycles stand in February at Excel. If you wish to buy online please head to www.motogirl.co.uk. BOOK REVIEW

IN SEARCH OF COLE

T

Reviewed by John Allsopp

his book is a candid tale of the highs and lows of Henry Cole’s life so far. For someone who spent time at Eton (a bastion of conservatism and conformity if ever there was one) his compulsion to be an individualist and non conformist is patently clear. His addictive traits almost ended up with him throwing his life away to heroin addiction but, after turning it around, transferred itself into all things automotive. The book itself reads as if Henry was dictating the content and because of this it has a similar feel to the shows he presents. Whille it is obvious that he’s a had a lot of fun, hidden within the light banter there is a darker undercurrent. He talks frequently about the effects his early year’s heroin addiction had on his life. There is a suicide attempt, and he has been surrounded by death, losing many close friends to drug addiction and motorcycling accidents. He is also very frank about becoming a diabetic, how

it effected him and the difficulties he and his wife had trying to conceive his children. What does come across loud and clear is that Henry works hard and is always up for any opportunity that may come his way. As he freely admits, he has had a good share of luck as well as misfortune, but you are left in no doubt that, unlike his TV persona, he’s a grafter. Before his on-camera motorcycling and sheddwelling, Henry worked in TV, mostly behind the camera. This period of his life also included war reporting of all things. Despite these and other revelations, the book is mostly about Henry’s obsession with motorcycles and the positive influence that they have brought to his life. I’ve often suggested that Henry Cole is a bit like Marmite, as people seem to either love or hate him. For either camp, I’d strongly recommend that you read this book as the way Henry has found a way to put motorcycles at the centre of his life deserves a nod at the very least. MORE BIKERS PLEASE

T

This issue’s MAG news comes to you from Colin Brown, MAG’s Director of Campaigns & Political Engagement.

here are many reasons why people ride motorcycles; in fact, probably as many reasons as there are people riding motorcycles. For the enthusiast there is no experience that comes close to the feeling of riding a bike. At the other end of the scale there are those who ride simply because it is the only form of motorised personal transport they can afford. Whatever the reason for riding, though, there can be very few riders out there that would object to the risks of being seriously hurt — or even killed — being improved a bit. We all need to take responsibility for our safety on the road, but there is always a trade-off between safety, convenience and enjoyment. What if I suggested to you that there is a way to improve your chances of getting home safely that does not involve spending any money, taking extra training, changing your riding habits or spoiling your fun? If I could offer that to you, would you buy in, would you take time to consider the suggestion or would you just label me as a lunatic? There is a line of thought that suggests that more motorcycles on the road make the roads safer for motorcycles. That’s it. Nothing more, nothing less. Simply increase the number of motorcycles on the road and the number of accidents and injuries will go down. Can it be true? Am I having a giraffe? More of those death-traps on the road will make the roads safer?…Yes! The Motorcycle Industry Association mention in their report Realising the Motorcycling Opportunity that “when motorcycle use increases to 10% of the vehicle stock, sharp falls in casualties start to occur.” In the UK, powered two wheelers account for four per cent of the vehicle stock and there are 2.91 fatalities per 10,000 registered machines (based on 2012/13 figures). In Belgium, 10% of the stock are PTWs and fatality rates are 2.02 per 10,000 machines, but in Italy (hardly the place we think of first for safe roads) 16% of the stock are PTWs but fatalities are just 1.28 per 10,000 machines. These are not made up figures. The report is co-authored by Highways England and the National Police Chiefs Council. Before you all move to Italy, consider this. In London they introduced a congestion charging

zone in 2003. Given that powered two wheelers were not subject to charging it is hardly surprising that there followed an increase in the proportion of motorcycles and scooters used in the charging zone. I recently read a report by TfL in 2005 on the effects of the charging zone. I was interested to note the following admission with regards to collisions: “The numbers of powered two-wheelers and pedal cycles involved in accidents have decreased, by eight percent and seven percent respectively, despite a combined increase of 15 percent in numbers of these entering the zone since charging.” The London Congestion Charging Zone has to be about as close as you can get to a real-world test of the effects of increasing the proportion of motorcycles on the road to a control group where proportions did not increase. So, in the charging zone, where there were more PTWs in proportion to other vehicles, there was a “noticeable decrease” in collisions involving PTWs, compared with outside the zone, where proportions had not changed. So there you have it. To help reduce the risk of coming a cropper on your bike, the best course of action for you to take is to persuade someone who does not ride to take up motorcycling. The benefits to the person you persuade include: Save Road Tax; Save Fuel; Save Time; Easier and Cheaper Parking; and Save the planet and everyone’s health. Motorcycles reduce congestion and that reduces pollution. It is proven that a 10% modal shift from cars to motorcycles reduces all harmful emissions by six percent overall. The Motorcycle Action Group is working behind the scenes with transport planners and politicians to get the changes to transport policies which fully embrace the benefits of motorcycles. This will promote road safety and protect our rights as riders. Let us not forget though, that we can all play an individual role by just persuading friends, family and work colleagues to open their eyes to the benefits, shake off their prejudices and get out there on two wheels. Nick Tunstill puts a pair of Forma Boulder Trail boots on trial

electing the right boot for trail riding is a particularly difficult task. They obviously need to offer decent protection but need to be flexible, not too heavy and be comfortable in varying temperatures. Waterproofing is not essential as would be in the case of, say, a touring boot and this means they breathe better. Waterproof socks, or booties from Forma, can be added if the conditions are particularly damp. The Boulder boot from Forma offers ultimate agility when it comes to trail riding. With maximum rigidity in the fully-flat sole, the foundation the Boulder boots provide allows for solid foot positioning in tricky obstacles, yet easily accommodates foot movement across the pegs without snagging. The agility only grows from there: the boots incorporate a flexible leather upper to allow the movement demanded from trail riders, making these boots some of the most

comfortable riding boots on the market. Protection geared towards trail riding is incorporated into the boot in the form of toe, heel, shank and medial ankle guards, and is hidden internally so that nothing can snag on the pegs, levers or any other components of the bike as you ride. Although often sold as a trials boot, they work well as a dual sport item. They also tend to be more comfortable if you incorporate off-the-bike activities like walking or hiking on your ride. The Forma Boulder boots, also available in black, are well designed and put together. They are pretty stiff for the first few hours but once broken in are really comfortable and do a fine job. I change brands and styles with lot of bike kit but boots and helmets are items that I tend to stick with and repurchase. The Boulder boots are now on the list. Expect to pay around £199. PRODUCT REVIEW

FOR FOUR SEASONS T John Allsopp tries a pair of Held’s Torno II trousers for size

orno II trousers are within the Held four season range. They are constructed from 500D Codura and Coolmax with a Pittards leather anti-slip seat patch and covering in the area between the knees. The crotch is constructed with a Keprotech type fabric which has some stretch that adds to comfort. These trousers are well equipped with pockets and vents. They come with two regular zipped pockets with the addition of two cargo type ones. There are full height vertical vents on both sides of the cargo pockets which are secured with both magnets and velcro. Yet another pocket is piggybacked on the top of the cargo panel just under the flap. A zip onto the leading edge of the cargo pocket can be opened to create a third leg vent. The Torno II trousers also have an innovative method of waterproofing that makes them ideal for touring. The Gore-Tex membrane can be removed from inside the trousers and worn over the top instead. This means you can carry the liner around as an oversuit, so a cooler, better-ventilated suit in warm conditions and an easy solution should it start to rain as it’s much simpler to put a liner over the top than it is to remove the trousers and zip a liner in place. This innovative Gore-Tex function proved

FEATURES

excellent throughout keeping me absolutely dry with no leakage at all, despite storm conditions. Like most oversuits the trousers can be a little tricky to put on over wet boots, but once on it was impenetrable. When the Gore-Tex liner is fitted inside it can feel a little strange putting them on as you are effectively putting on two pairs of trousers at the same time. However, when they are on they are very comfortable. I was very happy with the performance of the product. I found the sizing excellent too. The trousers come in both long and short length. They fitted me well around the waist and hips, where there are velcro adjusters, and were a perfect length in the leg which meant that the armour was unobtrusive. The armour in the knee is held in an internal pocket and it can be repositioned. I was surprised that the trousers are not supplied with any hip armour, although it can be purchased separately (£15.99) to sit in internal pockets. Torno II trousers are available in light grey and black and a men’s and ladies’ version. Expect to pay around £395. Overall, I’d rate these trousers a five out of five and, expect their robust design to last well beyond the two year warranty. Visit www.held.de/61-1-Dealer-Search.html to find your nearest dealer.
