HEAVEN The ‘Legend’ that is Yorkshire’s Dougie Lampkin took himself to another level in the history of trials when he set a new record with his seventh win in this year’s wet Scottish Six Days Trial riding the Spanish Gas Gas. The thirtyseven-year-old was under attack all week from the youngsters but rode with determination all week to see off any potential challengers to his ‘King of Scotland’ title Words: Jonny Pictures: John Shirt Snr, Yoomee

ampkin had not competed on his Gas Gas trials machine since last year’s tough Scott Trial and came to the ‘Scottish’ with a very relaxed attitude, but once the event was underway the hammer came down. With ‘Best on the Day’ awards taken on three of the six days, he was joint best with Alexz Wigg on the Wednesday and he went into a very determined mode, especially on the tough Friday route when the heavens opened as the day turned very wet and cold. He is now, in the terms of ‘Scottish’ wins with seven under his belt, a clear winner in front of legendary riders Sammy Miller and Mick Andrews who have five wins a piece. Lampkin first won the event way back in 1994 but who would like to bet on him returning and winning again next year – certainly not me! Behind Lampkin came two-time winner of the event James Dabill who staged a fantastic comeback after wallowing in a

lowly eighteenth position on day one when he had machine problems with the Beta that required a change of carburettor to get the Italian machine back on song. The ‘Dibsta’ knew with so much work to do to get back on the leader board or even challenge Lampkin for the win it would need his Yorkshire rival to have a disaster, but Lampkin was having none of it and the fifteen-mark winning margin showed what a fantastic ride Dougie had over the six days of competition. In third place Kinlochleven based Scot Gary Macdonald knew he would need a good final day to hold on to the last podium position and he duly delivered to finish just a single mark in front of Ross Danby. At last year’s event ‘Rossi’ had retired late on in the week with an engine problem with the new Jotagas which was making its debut in the tough event, but this year he came home with a big grin on his face as he reported a trouble-free week to importer Trial Magazine • June / July 2013

and previous winner of the event Steve Saunders. His fourthplace finish was his best ever at the SSDT. Sam Connor won the event way back in 2005 and this year returned once again to ride, but in the company of his two other brothers James and Tim. The Hooks Wood trials venue in the south of the country celebrated 30 years of trialling this year, and its owner Jim Connor was a very proud father as he witnessed his sons compete in the event. Sam was very strong during the earlier part of the week but ‘tweaked’ his back on the Friday route so the fifth place finish was just reward for his hard work. In sixth place was the popular Ian Austermuhle. Many times a visitor to the podium, he managed to finish just in front of Alexz Wigg who after a good start to the week faded a little as the week progressed. Behind ‘Wiggy’ was his Gas Gas team-mate Dan Thorpe who had moved up and down the top ten all week and, despite trying his all, he knew in the closing stages deserved better than his eight place finish. Tom Sagar just loves riding motorcycles, it’s a fact! He arrived at the event having won the latest round of the British Enduro Championship and was looking for a top ten finish. not disappoint mounted on the ‘barking’ four-stroke Montesa and if nothing else certainly kept the crowd entertained with his tough riding style. Finishing off the top ten was Spain’s Jordi Pascuet. Another potential winner on paper, the Jotagas mounted star will have to wait another year to challenge for the win which he still believes in. Leading the Ossa challenge was Jonathan Richardson who had missed last year’s event with the well documented knee injury, but he returned to the event and showed some flashes of brilliance on his way to finish in eleventh place. You may ask what happened to Michael Brown. Starting off very strong in the event he was in the Parc Ferme on the Thursday morning working on his machine when, in a freak accident, his knee joint popped out, putting him out of the event. Once again the ultimate challenge for man and machine, the Scottish Six Days Trial, has delivered and congratulations to everyone who finished the event. Despite some horrendous weather the Edinburgh and District Motor Club Ltd and all its associated officials, observers and marshals, including the Army who kept the riders’ machines fuelled, played their part in the running of what is still arguably the greatest test of both man and machine. The original range of Yamaha TY trials machines was so effective that they remained on the market for a full decade after first being introduced in 1973/74. They were developed by Yamaha in Japan and trials superstar Mick Andrews in England. The evolution of the machine range then carried on in the late seventies and early eighties with John Shirt Snr and Mick Andrews, who used the base production machine to develop and manufacture it into the world beating Yamaha powered Majesty machinery. In January 1983 Nigel Birkett agreed to ride the Majesty for ‘Shirty’ but there was more to this agreement then met the eye. Birkett was a respected development rider in his own right and Yamaha wanted his opinion on a new machine it was about to release. He was flown out to Japan to test the much talked about new machine and in July 1983 the mono-shock machine would arrive - the machine that would revolutionise the sport of trials in both production and competition forever! e go back to April 1982 to start the Yamaha monoshock story when news was leaked to the press that during the summer period Yamaha would launch a new production trials machine rumoured to have a 330cc engine. It was also announced that Mick Andrews would be drawing to a close his eleven year association with the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer. Based in Buxton, Derbyshire engineer John Shirt Snr, had been playing around with different engine capacities in his successful Majesty range of machines, capacities ranging from 100cc right through to 350cc. He became aware of some kind of change when Yamaha in Japan suggested he alter the colour scheme from the instantly recognisable yellow of the Majesty to the red and white of Yamaha, a red frame and white fuel tank with the Yamaha branded ‘Speed Block’ in red. John learnt in the very early years of his association with Yamaha, and the Japanese in particular, that it was always best to suggest an idea rather than tell them something was not right as they found this disrespectful. They showed him a lot of respect for his way of talking to them and in return they always listened to his suggestions. A letter would soon follow from Yamaha confirming to him that a new machine was imminent but with no further details. At the end of the year he heard the news that Nigel Birkett would be terminating his riding contract with the Italian brand, Fantic, and called him to explain that if he wanted a machine to ride he could loan him a Majesty. In late January 1983 Minoru Tanaka, who was in charge of the Amsterdam based Yamaha European Competition Department, would not confirm or deny that he knew of a new machine based on the recommendations from John Shirt. At the time he explained that Yamaha were always testing in Japan but that it was difficult to say if a new production trials machine would appear. Without giving anything away he said that no decision had been taken but it was possible a prototype machine did exist. Shirt Snr was also tight-lipped at the time, once again suggesting it was time a new machine was brought out. Birkett’s first appearance on the Yamaha powered Majesty would be at the Lakes Two Day trial on a machine he borrowed from successful Schoolboy rider, Kevin Bleasdale, a Majesty 250cc ‘S’ – (Bleasdale was unfortunately killed whilst ice climbing in Japan many years later).
