THE KNEBWORTH GRYPHONS RETURN

The Knebworth House Education & Preservation Trust is delighted to see the final stage of the multiple year restoration of the Eastern Steps, Gate Pillars, Balustrades and Beasts at the entrance to the courtyard of Knebworth House. The structures deteriorated and disappeared over the years. Models were made and the work was made possible through an assisting grant from the Country Houses Foundation. Legend has it that the mythical beasts in the shape of gryphons protect Knebworth House. The carved gothic figures are a feature of the Knebworth facade; and visitors can spot bats, gargoyles and other mythical beasts around the building. Majestic new gryphons for the gate pillars have been sculpted and carefully re-created by artists Alasdair Rennie and Stephen Pettifer of Coadstone and Cranborne Stone. The Knebworth House team have worked on the pillars in preparation for the reinstallation of the Beasts. Alasdair Rennie studied at Kingshott School, Hitchin and developed his artistic skills at Haileybury College. It’s wonderful to see these fantastical creatures back on duty as guardians to the House and the project complete. The new gryphons replace a pair of mythical stone beasts who were affectionately known by the family as Mr & Mrs Clarence. Visitors to Knebworth House will be able to see the newly restored gryphons in place and see the Clarences in their new residence guarding the tropical border in the formal Garden, at the entrance to the walled garden. Martha Lytton Cobbold, Managing Director of Lytton Enterprises said, ”Knebworth House is on the English Heritage at Risk Register, and as such, it is a wonderful accomplishment to continue restoration projects of this scale. There is still much to do with only 5 of the 10 major phases complete, but we are delighted that the visitors can experience the work in progress and see the newly restored creatures emerge.” For further information on the work of the Knebworth House Education & Preservation Trust, please visit www.knebworthhouse.com, or call the Estate Office on 01438 812 661.

WELLBEING

Exam Stress in children A recent survey carried out by national charity called YoungMinds suggests that children in the UK are living in a toxic climate of pressure and stress at school and online. The survey states that part of the problem is that children and young people face a 24/7 online culture that makes it almost impossible to switch off. Gaynor Dawson is a Behavioural Change Coach, this month she talks to us about her experience of working with children and young people.

R

ecently I have found myself working more and more with children and young people from the age of 7 -18. Most of these young clients come to me through word of mouth and often the parent who brings them will tell me they had no idea where to go for help when they realised their child was self harming, had low self esteem or lacked self confidence, was suffering from panic attacks or depression, had OCD tendencies or was stressed. Currently exam stress is something that I am working with teenagers on quite a bit, with GCSE’s and A Levels on the horizon. The young person often puts so much pressure on themselves and feels that their whole future depends on this 2 hour exam. They feel that if they fail they will not only let themselves down but their parents and teachers too. As well as all the usual advice such as helping your child develop a realistic study timetable, ensuring they eat a healthy diet and avoid caffeine and refined sugar as this increases anxiety, encouraging them to exercise inbetween studying even if that just means doing a 20 minute brisk walk as this will increase energy levels and decrease stress, I have three top tips to help with exam stress:

1) REFRAME NEGATIVE SELF TALK

Most of the young people who come to me for help with exam stress are all saying a variation of one thing to themselves - “I’m going to fail my exam” Every thought your child has will have an impact on how they feel and

therefore how they behave. By thinking negatively about the exam your child is increasing the anxious feelings inside. Encourage them instead to reframe this thought into a more positive statement that becomes almost a mantra for them such as “I am going to pass my exam” .

2) IMAGINE THEIR DESIRED OUTCOME

Encourage your child to spend a few minutes every day imaging the outcome they desire, for example walking in to the exam hall feeling calm and confident then turning paper over and realising that they know the answers. Doing this will allow your child to start to feel more confident about the outcome of the exam.

3) CHILLSEEKER BREATHING

Anxiety leading up to and on the day of the exam can lead to shortness of breath which is not only very frightening but can also leave your child’s mind totally blank.Teach your child simple breathing exercises such as chill seeker – breathe in through the nose and hold breathe for the count of three, then breathe slowly out through your mouth to the count of five and repeat this between 12 – 20 times. This will realign your child’s breathing helping them to feel calm and back in control. Remember, exam stress doesn’t last forever. Using these tips as well as encouraging your child talk to you about their concerns will all help to get them and you through this stressful time.

SPRING is in the air WRITTEN BY LEIGH GOLDSMITH (LILYLAWLER@GOOGLEMAIL.COM)

s the dark, wet winter comes to an end, it is perhaps a relief to know that soon the season of awakening and rejuvenation will be here. In Spring, the Earth’s axis increases it’s tilt towards the sun, rapidly lengthening the hours of daylight we receive. The hemisphere will also begin to heat up with a dramatic rise in solar exposure. As a result, snow will melt on mountaintops and the ground and air temperature will rise, allowing flowers and plants once again to bloom. In areas where snow and ground frost are not commonly seen, temperatures will rise at a steadier rate. Traditionally the beginning of Spring was considered to be when the vernal equinox occurred. This is usually March 20th/ March 21st.The vernal equinox is when the sun crosses the celestial equinox, and when the hours of day and night are of equal lengths. For many years, this occurrence in the Earth’s orbit determined the beginning of Spring. It provided a clear indication that a seasonal change was underway and marked the beginning of a

8

milder, brighter time of year. However, this date is not accepted by everyone. The Met Office, for example believe that Spring begins on March 1st.They have put this down to statistical reasons. By dividing the year into seasons and formatting them as three months per season, they have argued that the months of Spring can only be March, April and May! Spring therefore should begin on March 1st and end on May 31st. However, not everyone agrees. Labor MP, Stuart Bell has been quoted as saying, “Spring starts on March 20th /21st and if the Met Office are not aware of this simple fact, it reflects a casual approach to facts, which is all too inherent today!” Regardless of the official definition, what is clear is that soon, the evenings will get longer, the temperature will rise and our gardens will once again come to life.Whether Spring begins on March 1st or March 20th, the fact remains that Spring revitalizes everyone and awakens our senses! So let’s just enjoy it!

SAINT PATRICK’S DAY March 17th

WRITTEN BY LEIGH GOLDSMITH (LILYLAWLER@GOOGLEMAIL.COM)

W

hen most people think of Saint Patrick’s Day, they think of celebrations, parades, pubs and parties. Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated across the world each year on March 17th. Although predominantly an Irish feast day, it has become adopted by many cultures and nationalities around the world, from Canada to Australia, Malaysia to Argentina. To date, it is believed that Saint Patrick has acquired the biggest following of any other Saint in the secular world. So much so, that his feast day has even been celebrated onboard the International Space Station. On Saint Patrick’s Day 2013, Chris Hadfield took photographs of Ireland from space and a picture of himself wearing green. He even went as far as posting a recording of himself singing Danny Boy online to celebrate the day. While the social side of the religious and cultural festival is clearly experienced and enjoyed by many, the history surrounding Saint Patrick and Saint Patrick’s Day is widely unknown. While many are familiar with shamrocks and everything green, many are unaware as to why this is so and why it has evolved into one of the most celebrated feast days in the church’s calendar. There is much speculation over the birthplace of Saint Patrick. Some believe he was a Roman-born Britton while others believe that he was born near Dumbarton in Scotland. What is commonly agreed is that he was born in the fourth century, in 385AD, according to the Catholic Church. At some point in his teens, he was captured during an Irish raid and taken back to Ireland as a slave. Here, his 10

job was to herd and tend the sheep. At this time in Ireland, the Irish were predominantly Druids and Pagans. Despite this, Patrick learned the language and practises of his captors. He remained in Ireland until the age of twenty. It was then he had a dream where God instructed him to go to the coast where a ship was waiting to take him home. As he awoke, he followed the instructions and returned to England on the awaiting boat. Patrick soon trained as a priest and later became a Bishop. In 432AD he is said to have had another dream where the people of Ireland had requested him to return. In 433AD, he did just that, but this time he took the Gospel with him and returned with the intention of converting the Irish to Christianity. It is believed that he explained Christianity and the Holy Trinity by using a shamrock, a symbol which remains today as an emblem of Saint Patrick and his teachings. On March 17th 461AD, Saint Patrick is believed to have died, and according to tradition, he was buried at Downpatrick. As early as the ninth century, Saint Patrick was celebrated in Ireland and Europe, although it was not until the 1600’s that the Catholic Church accepted it as a feast day in the liturgy calendar.Today, millions of people take to the streets worldwide to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day.While it is debateable whether the celebrations are rooted in piety, what is clear is that the feast of Saint Patrick has become an international phenomenon. The carnival atmosphere and merriment of the Irish has clearly made this a celebration that everyone likes to be part of!

How to Get the Best

Car Insurance Deal If you’re like me, you will find car insurance renewal time one of the most irritating experiences. With every passing year I get a little older, a little more mature, a little more experienced behind the wheel, I NEVER make a claim and yet my insurance company feel it’s perfectly acceptable to ask me to pay a little more.

W

hy? Well they hope that most customers are too busy with their lives to quibble over an additional £30.They hope we’ll just put the letter to one side and allow it to renew automatically. Oh how they misjudge some of us! The fact is if you haven’t made a claim or changed your circumstances, you should expect your insurance to go DOWN not UP at renewal time. Therefore it’s very important that the savvy consumer ensures this happens. Let me explain how I do it. When I receive my renewal notice, I instantly go online and use some of the comparison websites (‘Go Compare’ and ‘Money supermarket’ being just two). I put in my details and see if I can beat the renewal price I’ve been offered by my existing insurance company. Please only compare with good, reputable insurance companies. There are always some (that no-one’s ever heard of) that come back with a price that’s very reasonable. Life is too short to have car insurance from a useless company though, so don’t make this mistake. I then get quotes from some of the companies that are NOT on price comparison websites, e.g. ‘Direct Line’ & ‘Privilege’. Without fail, I always find an insurance company that wants my business and is prepared to offer a reduced price to the one I’ve been quoted already. The whole job takes about an hour, but it’s an hour well spent if you’ve saved yourself £50 or more. At this point, you also need to consider cashback sites like ‘Quidco’ to see if you can save further money by taking insurance out through them. Armed with all the information, I then go back to my existing insurance company and let the negotiations begin. I opt for the “if you’re thinking of leaving us” number

on the automated phone system and explain that I’ve been a customer of theirs for some time and am rather disappointed that they are expecting me to pay more for my insurance. I tell them I’ve done some shopping around and have found another insurance company that will beat their price. I ask them to have a look at their system to see what’s the best price they can offer me (I never make the mistake of showing my hand at this point). 9 times out of 10 they come back with a price that’s even better than the best price you’ve found from the alternative company, but if not, you’ve then got that up your sleeve. I have literally saved myself hundreds and hundreds of pounds by using this method every renewal time. The funny thing is, I’m still with the same insurance company I’ve been with for 12 years now. They just keep beating those prices. Funny that! The truth is though that if they didn’t, I would simply switch and save myself the money. Some other pointers I would suggest: 1. Insurance companies consider you to be a lower risk if you’re married or in a partnership so put your other half on the policy. 2. Consider protecting your no claims bonus. If you are unfortunate enough to have to make a claim, this will prevent the policy from soaring. 3. Take the motor legal protection cover. In a dispute situation it can be invaluable. 4. Try to accurately predict your annual mileage. There’s no point being insured for 20,000 miles a year if you only drive 2,000. 5. Be honest with your insurance company. If you get caught out your insurance will be invalidated and you’ll face a MASSIVE bill! Happy motoring!

T

his month we returned to the Globe in Codicote to sample the menu. It was a Wednesday evening and there were a few people enjoying a drink around the open fire which was crackling in the background. There was a great friendly atmosphere and we were greeted by The Chef (Mike Chinner) who recommended some of the specials. We started with Deep Fried Camembert with Cranberry Sauce which was well presented. There were 3 small portions of crispy breaded Camembert with fresh Cranberry, served with a salad with home-made French dressing. This was a great start to the meal.We also had the Creamy Garlic Mushrooms in a Puff Pastry case. This dish again was well presented, the mushrooms were well cooked with a lovely creamy garlic sauce, and the fresh crispy pastry was a lovely twist. If you like Garlic Mushrooms then you will love this starter. The starters are all priced at ÂŁ3.95 which is great value. For main course we opted for the Homemade Chicken, Mushroom and Stilton Pie with mash. I really enjoyed this dish, the pastry was crispy, the chicken was really tasty and the Cropwell Bishop Stilton gave the pie a tangy kick which you could taste in the background, without overpowering 14

FOOD REVIEW

the dish. The dish was served with wonderful homemade creamy mash and gravy, it was again a very generous portion. We also had a dish from the Specials Board – the Stuffed Breast of Chicken with Dauphinoise potatoes. This was beautifully presented and tasted delightful. The chicken liver stuffing really enhanced the succulent chicken breast. This was again a generous portion and amazing value at £7.95. Both meals came with a good portion of steamed vegetables on side plates which were perfectly cooked. For dessert Mike suggested we try one of his all time favourites – Orange Bread & Butter Pudding, a twist on the classic dessert. It was quite light and just right after enjoying a good sized starter and main. There was a tasty layer of bread at the top of the dish sitting above a layer of custard, with a ball of ice cream on top.You could taste the orange zest throughout the dessert and it was very different to the usual stodgy Bread and Butter Puddings you find. I have to say I loved it, especially as isn’t the sort of dessert I would have normally chosen! We also had the Golden Syrup Sponge which was a big dessert. The sponge was beautifully cooked, nice and moist with treacle on the side so it didn’t make it too sickly although as you would expect it was very sweet. Even the custard in both desserts was homemade. Mike came and talked us through the dishes, it is clear to see he is very passionate about cooking, he has a lot of knowledge having worked at a number of high profile venues in the past. The staff were very friendly and attentive, there is a very warm, welcoming atmosphere at the Globe and we had a wonderful evening. I can’t stress enough how surprised I was by the value of the food for the quality that you are getting, you could have a 3 course meal and drink for under £20! I would highly recommend trying the Globe, I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as we did!

he Maldives is a group of low-lying coral islands, forming an archipelago of 26 major atolls, situated south west of Sri Lanka. Most visitors to the Maldives come on prearranged package tours that include accommodation on any one of the 87 resort islands. All the resorts are located on pristine islands, with idyllic settings for water activities and long, lazy beach days. The Maldives is a great destination to team up with another stop on the way for example a 3 night break in Dubai followed by a week in the Maldives or a few days in Sri Lanka (only 1.5 hours away) beforehand. You can fly directly from London with BA on a scheduled service and Monarch on a charter flight or with Emirates if you fancy stopping over in Dubai on the way.

All flights land in the Capital Island – Male, from there you then either take a seaplane or boat to your resort. The resorts are predominantly located in the three atolls closest to the Maldivian capital, in MalÊ (Kaafu) atoll. A few are found in Vaavu, Baa, Lhaviyani and the Ari (Alifu) atoll. Ari has recently been earmarked for development as the new Tourism Zone. Each resort has an individual character supported by traditional or modern architecture. The larger, less expensive resorts attract young, adventure-seeking tourists whilst some of the smaller, more expensive options offer a more reclusive, intimate holiday perfect for Honeymooners. The excursions provided by the resorts vary, depending on their proximity to dive sites, local villages and natural attractions. All the resorts, however, offer watersports, such as night-fishing trips, scuba diving, snorkelling, parasailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, banana-boating and knee-boarding. The tropical climate of the Maldives keeps things hot and humid throughout the year, but sea breezes offer some slight relief. The islands experience two wet

monsoon seasons, the main one between April and October. The best time to holiday in the Maldives is between December and April. Saying that we travelled to the Maldives in July during our honeymoon and were very lucky as we only experienced one day of rain in ten days! We stayed at two different islands having five nights on each one. The first one is one of the largest islands called Kuredu, which is a 4 star island with five restaurants, a coffee shop, choice of bars, two swimming pools including a children’s pool, a fitness room, spa, TV lounge, floodlit tennis court, a dive centre and a 6-hole pitch & putt golf course. Water sports include windsurfing, sailing and snorkelling. This island is perfect for families or those who get bored of relaxing as there is a lot packed in to the 1000m by 500m island. The second resort was the luxurious and stunning 5 star Conrad Maldives Rangali Island which occupies two tropical islands in the South Ari Atoll. The two islands are linked by a 500 metre long foot bridge (or Dhoni shuttle boat) across the lagoon. There is also a Spa retreat with its Spa Water Villas and specially designed spa

packages. With a choice of seven restaurants, three bars, infinity pool, over water spa and Spa Retreat with steam, sauna and Jacuzzi, Beauty Salon, yoga, gym, aerobics studio, floodlit tennis court and dive Centre there is also plenty to do here. Water sports include catamaran sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing, Jet Ski, canoes and pedalos. You will also find “Ithaa, a unique underwater restaurant, 5 meters below sea level which has glass walls and just 6 tables. This provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to dine under the sea and watch stingrays and other tropical fish swimming past you. This resort provides the ultimate luxury holiday; you even get access to a private Hilton lounge at Male airport where you can have a massage while you wait. This island was so romantic and the villas absolutely stunning, the service was truly outstanding; however it is one of the most expensive resorts in the Maldives. So to sum up, if you fancy the ultimate getaway then you should consider the Maldives, there are so many islands to choose from to match every budget!

Being Parents Apart Campaign 58% of separated parents don’t believe in a ‘good separation’ Relate Central and Northern Hertfordshire takes part in new Being Parents Apart campaign Being a parent isn’t easy, especially in the tough times like dealing with separation. When it comes down to the moments that matter, it’s the quality of our relationships that get parents and kids through. We know that separating well – where both parents are able to be amicable, cooperative and fully engaged with their children – means better outcomes for the whole family. Being Parents Apart aims to raise awareness of the challenges that separation brings and let parents know that we’re here to help.
