LOCAL NEWS

‘Harmony in Welwyn’ On Tuesday evenings, the Vineyard Barn in Welwyn Garden City rings with the unique sound of Barbershop singing – the Welwyn Harmony Ladies Barbershop Chorus is rehearsing again! All this began some thirty years ago when an American barbershop singer, Doris Ellis, formed the ‘Garden City Chorus’ under the direction of Mike Barrett. From this small beginning flourished the Welwyn Harmony we know today – a group of some 36 Ladies singing four part unaccompanied harmony. The Chorus is affiliated to the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS). Contrary to popular belief, the Chorus does not wear blazers and boaters! In fact, their costumes when performing at public venues, are highly glamorous, very flattering and colourful, thus illustrating the lively and exciting style of Barbershop music. The Chorus regularly provides entertainment for groups and organisations, both large and small, such as parties, garden fetes, musical festivals, weddings, hospices and charity functions throughout the local area. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Isabel Hospice the Chorus presented Showtime, a special variety fun-packed evening of entertainment at the Hawthorne Theatre and later presented a cheque for £2,400 to the Charity. During 2012 the Chorus joined Marty Wilde at the start of his Rock ‘N’ Roll Party nationwide tour, singing four songs on stage with him and the Wildcats. Viv Garner, Musical Director of Welwyn Harmony said, ‘You can see that as a group we are versatile, but the foundation of our music is that wonderful barbershop sound which we all love. Once barbershop takes a hold, it doesn’t let go!’ So, how is that sound created? Barbershop is a style of unaccompanied four part harmony singing.

4

It is under the umbrella of ‘a cappella’ singing, from the Latin meaning ‘in the chapel style’ which, in turn, means using voices to create both the tune and the accompaniment. It is therefore a complete musical package. Unlike the ‘usual’ choir set up (soprano, alto, tenor and bass – SATB), a barbershop chorus is unique in that it works with no musical accompaniment. A single starting note on the pitch pipe sets the tone! The melody is sung by the leads. The tenors sing a very high descant harmony above the melody. The baritones complete the four part chord, sometimes above and sometimes below the melody and the basses sing the lowest notes which support the sound. Together, these elements create the distinctive blend of sound which is ‘Barbershop’. Welwyn Harmony Ladies Barbershop Chorus is thriving. At present the Chorus is preparing for the Milton Keynes Music Festival and, later in the year, taking part in the national LABBS Convention at Llandudno as well as local ‘sing-outs’. Every Tuesday evening, the Chorus meets at the Vineyard Barn in Welwyn Garden City and great fun is had by all. Barbara Millar, Chair of the Chorus, says ‘Believe it or not, to be part of the fun you do not need to read music – just be able to hold a tune and have enthusiasm for the songs. One of the best ways to learn about us is to come along one Tuesday, meet the group and ‘take it from there!’ A warm welcome awaits you. Who knows, you may even join in with a song or two!’ To find out more about Welwyn Harmony visit www.welwynharmony.org.uk or call Verne on 01727 832452.

WELLBEING

Going forward to success... Last month I told you I was leaving for the warmer climes of Queensland, Australia and I was inundated with lovely people who emailed or rang to wish me well. Thank you, that was so kind.

B

y the time you get this I will be on my way and I will set up my practice there and continue to expand my online business worldwide.

So, what about you? How does this affect you? If you want my help there are three great ways you can get it (apart from flying over personally!) 1. Skype – More than half of the people who come to me for help have found me online and my consultations over the last 6 years have been run not only in Knebworth, but all over England, and overseas on skype or facetime. We form our own little space and, with a cuppa, settle down just as we would if we were both in my little therapy room. Our sessions typically last 60 minutes compared to the usual 90 minutes because we get such a lot done. Skyping is quick; it saves time; it saves stressing out; it saves dressing up, and it saves energy and it is very easy. It is like picking up the phone and talking, only for free. It is good for those who are housebound and those who are shy; for people who want instant help and for those who have already seen me and want someone they know. You email, we set up a suitable time and then we work together to help you. It is easy and I am even doing a webinar later in April to show how it works. 2. Audios – I have now recorded 21 beautifully gentle hypnotic audios. The words and music inspire and support you to make yourself better. There are positive clear audios for confidence; gentle audios to help when you are in pain or just feeling like you need some healing; there are settling audios to help

IBS sufferers feel better; soothing audios to help you to sleep, stop teeth grinding and snoring, too. If you are trying for a baby there is now an empowering mp3 series for fertility and pregnancy. There are also my famous five, on-track weight loss mp3s. All are very reasonably priced, explained well, and available to download from my website. 3. Online programs – For the best weight loss help my successful, personal, 3 month program includes 5 skype consultations, an online workbook including the on-track hypnosis weight loss mp3s, and the on-track tapping videos. Naturally, if you want local help you can email me for a recommendation. Special for this month – email me marilyn@ marilyntuck.co.uk to receive my favorite sleeping mp3 download for free: valued at £7.99. Special for next month – Webinar: ‘The ins and outs of therapy online, and how to achieve the best result’. Do join us, Monday April 22nd at 8pm but check the website just in case there is a last minute glitch.

Au revoir.

C

andicups offers an extensive range of top quality high street brands like Freya, Fantasie, Panache and Curvy Kate. From nursing bras and basques to swimwear and sports bras, you can find any type of lingerie including hosiery to accompany it. They only sell top quality products, which might be the reason they are often close to selling out. When a new range comes in it just flies off the shelves, and they order a serious amount of stock! Their new line of swimwear will be arriving at the end of March and they are already preparing for the avalanche of orders coming in. If you can’t see your size on the website, just email or phone and they may have it in stock or coming in soon. The most popular styles and sizes are advertised on the website, but very often if a customer requests a certain size that is not available on the site, they still may be able to get it for you. Gwen, the owner of Candicups told us, “It can be really frustrating for larger chested ladies to find a bra that fits – properly. It seems to be that style does not go hand in hand with a good fit when it comes to lingerie. We have a large male customer base and our Gentleman’s Guide helps men find the perfect lingerie for their partner. They can phone us to discuss options, or use the contact page on our website. Our team is committed to providing the right fit for the right lady, we would never sell a bra that we wouldn’t want to wear ourselves!” Village Life readers can enjoy a 10% discount off the first order, simply visit www.candicups.com, register and then enter “FIRSTORDER” at the checkout. 8

“Very helpful advice on selecting and choosing correct bra and size. Delivery very prompt and nicely packaged, will definitely be back for more!” S Pattle “I was really pleased with the nursing bras that I ordered. It’s actually the most comfortable nursing bra I have bought and it’s supportive too.The colour has remained vibrant, even after many washes.” R Sims

Bloggers needed! Calling all bloggers. Hostelling International is looking for you to take part in one of the country’s most exciting competitions ever launched.

H

ostelling International (HI) is the only global network ofYouth Hostel Associations. Located in some of the world’s most inspiring locations, the HI network offers 4,000 unique hostels in 90 countries worldwide. There are more than 200 of these hostels which are available to be booked by groups. All HI hostels meet assured standards, which guarantee a range of good quality safe accommodation, in friendly surroundings at affordable prices. HI is a non-profit membership organisation, with a proud history and a relevant philosophy. HI hostels are much more than just a place to stay. They are about discovering new places, learning about new cultures and making lifelong friendships. With over 4 million members worldwide HI is one of the largest youth membership organisations in the world. On 1st March, the Welwyn Garden City charity which promotes travel for all, will be inviting anyone and everyone who has ever set up a blog to enter ‘The Big Blog Exchange’. “We are on a mission,” explained the project coordinator, Brianda Lopez, “A mission that started 100 years ago and has been going on ever since. “We exist to enable global interaction for fun, for new experiences, for learning, for peace and understanding. Because we believe that if young people discover, explore and understand other cultures and people – the world will be a better place.” The Big Blog Exchange will offer 16 bloggers the chance to swap lives, places, cultures and blogs with someone else across the globe. So if you are blogging in Hitchin about the ups and downs of being a new mum, or whether you are in Hemel Hempstead and blog about walking the country, we want to hear from you. Hostelling International’s unique position in the market means that the competition is being promoted worldwide through its associations with other countries. Unlike other hostel providers, Hostelling International is a not-for profit organisation which exists to give young people everywhere the opportunity to travel using affordable hostels. Its mission believes that by encouraging this there will be better world understanding. “The competition opens on March 1 and is open to everyone. It doesn’t matter if you have just set up your blog, or if it has been 12

going for 10 years,” explained Brianda, “and it doesn’t matter what it is about. It might be politics, travel, fashion, or even cupcakes. But you do need to have a desire to swap everything for 10 days. “The winners of the Big Blog Exchange might end up anywhere in the world. So the new-mum from Hitchin might end up spending 10 days in Brazil learning about the rainforests and writing about them for everyone to share.” Entrants will be encouraged to get their friends and followers to vote for them through a profile page. 100 finalists will then make it through to a shortlist which will be narrowed down to just 15 by an international judging panel. The final 16th blogger will be a wildcard choice handpicked by Hostelling International based on the quality of content and their reason for taking part. “It really is a chance of a lifetime,” added Brianda. “The competition is about people being passionate and we hope that this passion will help us change the world, using the power of blogs.”

To enter your blog in The Big Blog Exchange go to : www.bigblogexchange.org Did you know that 77% of all internet users read blogs, 70% of all bloggers use their blog to share their expertise and experience with others, and 55% of them read blogs as their main source for ideas and inspiration.

community

A history of Kimpton Kimpton is a village approximately six miles south of Hitchin with a population of around 1400. The village lies along the valley of a dried-up river bed and is a mile long. The oldest houses date back to the late 16th and early 17th century but most are 19th and early 20th century. Behind the High Street are two large housing estates built in the 1970s.

he village has a reputation for its strong community spirit with over 50 clubs and organisations meeting regularly and helping to support the village as a whole. There is an annual three day festival every year at the beginning of May. Kimpton has a spacious flint-built parish church in the unusual transitional style between Norman and Early English. The Dacre Chapel has a fine Perpendicular screen and the remains of early wall paintings in the chancel show St Christopher and the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy. The Wesleyan Methodist Church on the village green was built in 1870 and the Sunday School Hall was added in 1907. 2000 years ago the entire area would have been covered with forest since the heavy clay soil was ideal for tree growth. Early men with their primitive flint axes found tree-felling slow and laborious; so they tended to keep to the more open tracts of country. It is therefore not surprising that no trace of early man has yet been found in the Parish. 20

In these times an active river would have flowed down the Kimpton Valley, entering the River Mimram near the present Kimpton Mill. No evidence of Roman dwellings have been found in the Parish, although in 1815 workmen widening a road in Priors Wood found a dark coloured urn containing 230 silver republican and imperial coins. The oldest of these was minted in 2 B.C. and the most recent 104 A.D. A Roman chariot bell is also supposed to have been found in the parish at Blackmore End.This may have been a relic from one of the bloody encounters between Boudicca (Boadicea) Queen of the Iceni tribes of East Anglia and the Roman Governor Suetonius. The first settlers in Kimpton probably appeared around 1000 AD possibly in the vicinity of Kimpton Mill. They founded self-contained communities, building their huts in an elevated position overlooking their fields. By this time the prehistoric river that flowed down the Kimpton Valley, had already been reduced to little more than a brook. Gradually the farmers cleared the forest on the banks until

by the beginning of the 11th century they had reached the present village site. Most of this is pure supposition as apart from the AngloSaxon Chronicles (which do not mention a place as small as Kimpton) there are virtually no written documents. William confiscated the lands of the Saxons. Many of the manors were handed over by the King to the leaders of this army in return for military support. Kimpton was one of the many estates given to Odo, the warrior-Bishop of Bayeux, the King’s half-brother. Odo in turn sub-let the manor to Ralf de Curbespine, who also owned other manors in Kent. Kimpton was assessed at 2 Knights Fees, that is to say, Ralf would be responsible for supplying 2 knights for about 2 months each year to serve in the King’s army. In 1085 William ordered a national survey to be carried out so that “he might know what obligation each landowner owed him.”The information was gathered into the “Doomsday Book.” and entry in folio 134b refers to Kimpton having a population was 24 excluding women and children, with an area of around 480 acres of forest which had been cleared for cultivation. The village would be a group of low single room hovels, without the refinements of windows or chimneys, accommodating both family and animals. The Name “Kimpton’’ is derived from the Saxon “Cyma-tun,” meaning “homestead of a person called Cyma.” During the 17th and 18th centuries wealthy men acquired large country estates, buying up adjacent manors or obtaining them through marriage. The Hoo family of St. Pauls Walden had purchased the Manor of Hocknenhanger in 1596, and the land passed by inheritance to Susan Hoo who married Jonathan Keate. By 1670 he had purchased the manors of Parkbury with Leggats, and Bibbesworth and almost the whole of the east end of the Parish had become part of the “Hoo Estate,” centred at Hoo End. In common with the practice of the time, a new grander house was built: Kimpton Hoo. In 1732 the “Hoo Estate” was sold to the Brand family. Kimpton Hoo was demolished in the 1950’s. For a few years the outbuildings were used as a chicken farm but today the site is a small housing estate. In February 2001, Kimpton was hit by flooding due to an unprecedented amount of rainfall. The dried up river Kym, which was now a vital road, emerged again and followed its natural course from Netherfield Springs, through Kimpton and joined the Mimram at Kimpton Mill. The situation became fairly serious on the 24th when business owners from the Industrial Estate on Claggy March 2013

road and also residents at risk hired pumps and called the Fire Brigade to try to deal with the 1 metre deep water flow. The total cost of the damage caused by the flood was approximately £500,000. At the beginning of the century there were many ale houses and pubs in the village with 2 remaining today, the Boot and the White Horse (The White Horse is a great country pub, pop in and say hi to Janet who will give you a warm welcome!)
