A Handful of Straw Mary Rensten’s bewitching new novel set in Walkern. ‘Standing directly in front of her, with his left hand firmly grasping Jane’s arm, Arthur drove the pin deep into her flesh. The old woman remained perfectly still and looked straight into Arthur’s face. Caroline flinched and turned her head away. When she looked back Arthur was withdrawing the pin from Jane’s arm. “Now, let us see if there is any blood.” Francis took hold of Jane’s wrist and lifted it, waving her arm about as if it was an inanimate object, not a part of a human being. “There. Nothing. Not a drop. Just watery fluid. I knew there’d be no blood.” He let the arm drop. Slowly the woman’s sleeve slid down.’ This spine tingling excerpt is from ‘A Handful of Straw’ by Hertfordshire author Mary Rensten. The novel is based on the story of Jane Wenham of Walkern, who was tried as a witch at the Hertford Spring Assizes in 1712.

write articles about children – she now had three of her own – for magazines as varied as She and Nursery World. Extending her writing sphere to history, gardens, travel, celebrity interviews – in which she began to specialise, eventually writing over 400 of them – she also invented and marketed word games, wrote a teacher’s guide to Kew Gardens, a book on monumental brasses, and edited the Young Hertfordshire section of her county’s magazine. Having trained for the stage before taking up teaching Mary also wrote plays for her pupils to perform. In 1990 her play, The Popping of the Grand Balloon, was published. Other plays followed, for both children and adults, and also for radio. She had plays performed on the London Fringe and at the Edinburgh Festival.

All Jane wanted was a handful of straw, but when the farmhand refused to give it to her; he accused her of putting a spell on him. The villagers said she was a witch; they wanted her dead. So did Francis Bragge… and he was a man of God. How could any sensible person believe such nonsense in this new enlightened century? Caroline Newell, 30, widowed and wealthy, did not… and said so. Voicing her modern ideas in Walkern was dangerous for Caroline… and for Mary, her young maid. The events of February and March 1712 – the witch-hunt, and meeting the gentle but passionate Simon Warrender and the ambitious gypsy boy Jem – would have a lasting effect upon the lives of both Caroline and Mary. Mary Rensten is a former free-lance journalist and teacher and is a Vice-President of the Society of Women Writers & Journalists (SWWJ) and a member of the Writers Guild of Great Britain. She has lived in Hertfordshire for over 50 years. In 1975, at a Housewives Register gathering, Mary met Joan Rice, a member of the SWWJ Council, and also a member of Verulam Writers Circle, St. Albans. After Joan’s talk on writing for magazines, Mary said to her: “I should like to do that.” Joan looked her straight in the eyes. “Are you serious about this?” “Oh yes,” said Mary. “Good, then I’ll put you in touch with the Verulam Writers secretary.” Joan did precisely that. Mary wrote her first magazine piece, which was accepted both by Verulam Writers, as an indication of serious intent, and by the magazine, Annabel, which paid her £10. Mary’s writing career was launched! In time she became Chair of Verulam Writers and, sponsored by Joan Rice and Eileen Elias, she joined the SWWJ. Whilst still teaching, Mary began to 4

Rhubarb Crumble InGredIents (makes two tartlets) tartlet case: 100gr castor sugar, 200gr butter, 300gr strong flour, 1 whole egg, pinch of salt, zest of lemon.

method: mix all ingredients to a smooth paste so that you can roll it 5mm thick, put in tartlet case, prick small holes, and cover with cooking beans, cook in oven for 7 mins, on 160 until golden brown. rhubarb:

500gr fresh rhubarb, pinch of ground pink peppercorns, add icing sugar to suit taste.

method: cut rhubarb in small cubes, put on flat tray with icing sugar and dust with pink peppercorn, cover with foil & cook in oven for 3 /8 mins at 200, cooking this way keeps colour and flavour. crumble topping: 100gr castor sugar, 100gr strong flour, 50gr butter cut in very small cubes

method: mix all ingredients together slowly with whisk making sure you can still see lumps – put in oven for 6 mins, remove, shake, put back in oven, and repeat this 5 or 6 times, so you have nice different size lumps for your topping. top tip: Whilst assembling your tartlets, put a tablespoon of custard in the tartlet case before the rhubarb, as a nice surprise. Once assembled, warm up again in oven. Serve with dusting of icing sugar, and vanilla ice cream or crème fraiche.

Rose Todd The Law of Attraction and Conscious Living

It’ll only take a minute... Creating something you want is not difficult once you know how to do it. In fact it need only take a minute. I know you’re busy, but surely you can spare a minute to create something you really want?

C

onscious Living is a way of life: it’s consciously choosing positive feeling thoughts that can bring you happiness and success. And it need only take a minute – well 68 seconds really. Just in case this concept is new to you, I’ll run you through it: Your thoughts and feelings are creating your life and I’m sure at some time you’ve had an experience when something happened and you said “I knew that would happen.” And it did. And you weren’t really that surprised when it did. That’s what I mean when I say your thoughts and feelings create your life. Here’s a nice story to show you want I mean. A friend really wanted to go to see a particular opera but she knew she couldn’t afford a ticket and she didn’t know how she could get there. I told her ‘it only takes a minute to create’ – so she closed her eyes and imagined being inside the opera house: she was enchanted by the glittering chandeliers, the buzz and the hum of excitement as people were beginning to take their seats. She imagined showing her ticket to the usher and being taken to a seat in one of the Boxes. She felt the excitement mount within her – and she kept her delighted, excited feelings and her visions

alive for more than 68 seconds and then she let them go. And here’s the secret – every time she thought about going to the Opera, she felt those excited feelings! Now, it transpired that the day before the opera, she received an email from what can only be called a distant acquaintance. She’d met this acquaintance a few times at the local opera society. The acquaintance had an extra ticket as one of their party had fallen ill and they wondered if my friend would like to accompany them? If so, they were going into London in a Limo and so they would call to collect her! It only takes a few seconds more than a minute – try it and see what you create! If you are interested in finding out more, I offer one to one coaching to help you create, not just a few little things – but the entire life you truely want to live.

This month as a special deal for Village Life readers, I am offering a full one hour coaching session on Conscious Living and the Law of Attraction for the discounted price of just £25 (my usual price is £60). So take the step forward and contact me at: rose@rosetodd.com or call me on: 0774 802 1887 For more information just go to: www.rosetodd.com/mentoring-and-coaching 6

The Wrong Trousers? – a Steward’s Confession

Confession is good for the soul, so I feel it is about time to reveal what befell me a few years ago whilst serving as steward in our local Methodist church. The occasion: a farewell service for our minister and his family. On a warm July evening it was decided to combine this with a faith-tea beforehand in our ‘upper room.’ As tea was finishing my wife and I slipped downstairs to the vestry to prepare the communion elements for the service. For several years we’d used a well-known blackcurrant cordial as communion wine. On this occasion the glass jug previously used for pouring the wine into the individual communion glasses had been replaced, by a plastic bottle with a long spout to dispense the wine. Being unsure just how efficient this device was going to be I tested it – by squeezing. The purple liquid gushed out the spout all down the front of my trousers. My wife suggested I took off the trousers and wait in the downstairs lavatory whilst she attempted to remove the stain in the sink. Luckily it hadn’t spread far and she was able to wash most of it out but this left the trousers soaking wet. She couldn’t dry them under the electric hand-drier in the kitchen; it wasn’t working. Unfortunately because the trousers were made of cream material the wet patch remained very noticeable. Whilst we were considering what to do next my wife was summoned upstairs to make a presentation to the minister, leaving me stranded trouser-less in the downstairs loo. Then I had a brainwave, I had a pair of gardening trousers in the boot of our car. Luckily my car keys were still in my sodden trousers. I crept out the rear door of the church and down the passage into the car-park. I was forced to skulk between the vehicles in my socks and boxer shorts until i got to my car. Pressing the button on the remote, nothing happened. I tried a second and third time before realising that the remote I had in my hand was the one belonging to my mother-in-law’s car (which we inherited when she stopped driving) and which was still sat on our driveway back home. Only then did I recall that my wife had driven us down to church in our own car. I retreated back down the passage only to find the door-closer had shut me out. Now the only way back inside was through the main doors. I sprinted down the passageway and quickly entered the small vestibule at the front of the church. Amazingly no one was about and I headed through the chancel and back into the vestry. Fortunately, my wife re-appeared seconds later from upstairs. I told her I needed her car keys to retrieve my spare trousers. She handed them over and within a couple of minutes I managed to rescue them from the boot of our car. Clearly my gardening trousers were not pristine but beggars can’t be choosers and they were all I had. I had only just managed to pull them on when footsteps indicated folk were returning downstairs for the service. My troubles weren’t over for as I stood at the lectern ready to do the notices I realised I’d left them in the pocket of my trousers, the wet trousers. I blagged my way through the notices like a true pro and even when a fellow steward cheekily shouted out, “Cool trousers,” I carried on regardless.

restaurant REVIEW

The Chequers Inn 16 London Road, Woolmer Green, Herts SG3 6JP

L

ast month we went to the Chequers Inn in Woolmer Green and really loved the pub, especially the Secret Zoo in the garden with those lovely animals. This month we return to sample the food. It was a Friday evening and it was quite busy, we walked in and were greeted with a big smile. Although the same menu is available throughout, we decided to have our meal in the restaurant. The restaurant has a lovely modern feel and it is nice that the tables are well spaced out, there was ambient music in the background and we could see the goats in the garden through the window. All dishes on the menu are prepared to order from fresh, daily delivered produce. In addition to their famous pies, there is a great selection of food on the al carte menu including a good choice of vegetarian dishes. To start we had the Haddock and Salmon Fishcake and the Breaded Calamari with Thai Chilli Mayonnaise and Crusty Bread. The Calamari was delicious and the chilli mayonnaise really complimented the squid, it was a very generous portion and the bread was perfect for finishing the chilli mayo. The fishcake was crispy on the outside and the Salmon and Haddock was well cooked in side with a delicious sauce. Although it was a generous portion, it was quite a light dish and perfect as a starter. For our mains we chose the Parmesan & herb crusted Hake fillet served with Chorizo & Leek cream with sautéed potatoes and the Pan Fried Duck Breast with Ginger, Honey, Chilli and Coriander Sauce served with sautéed potatoes. Both dishes were really well presented; the Hake was delightful and full of flavour and worked really well with the Chorizo. We were asked how we would like the duck cooked and opted for ‘medium’; it was an absolutely delicious dish with tender meat that melted in the mouth with a subtle kick from the chilli. The potatoes and green beans were cooked perfectly on both dishes. Although we were fairly full at this point, it would have been rude not to finish our meal with some of the homemade desserts, so we went for the Apple, Pear and Maple Crumble with Clotted Cream and the Tiramisu with Amaretto Cream and Pistachios. Both desserts were delightful, the crumble was great with the cream and the Chef’s twist with the Tiramisu in a glass was a work of art and tasted amazing! We had a fantastic meal and were very impressed by both the presentation and the quality of the food, Marian and her staff were really friendly and I would highly recommend a visit. Kids will love the zoo as the adults enjoy a drink and bite to eat outside now the weather is getting better! To win a 3 course meal for two, tell us what is in the Garden at the Chequers Inn? Looking to improve your home?

H

azel’s Interiors is based in Knebworth and was established by Hazel Nutting a qualified interior designer. Having originally studied graphic design and working for some years in London and Hertfordshire based studios she decided to follow another path and re-trained as an interior designer, also successfully completing a course in Home Staging and Property Styling. She has previously had experience of working within residential and show home sales. Hazel specialises in residential properties and provides a high level of service at affordable prices. Each home is unique and special so every commission will always be approached with the same enthusiasm and professionalism; from a single room to complete homes she will work within your budget and style to rejuvenate your interior space. She can be flexible in sourcing an individual component for you; a lamp or maybe a statement chair to a full design or home staging service. The design process begins with a free no obligation meeting at your home or the most convenient venue for you, where your requirements will be discussed and a brief agreed. A quotation will then be provided with time frames and costs for your approval. Once agreed Hazel will then show you visuals for your design scheme and from there she can go on to oversee the ordering and project management if you require this level of service. Hazel also offers an email service where you simply email a photograph of the room along with the dimensions and your budget and what you are looking to achieve (Ideal if you have a smaller budget or time is precious). Finally Hazel offers a property styling service which can help to sell or to enhance your space by de-cluttering or furniture re-arrangement. Getting your property ready for

selling normally means it will achieve a higher valuation and sell at a better price in a faster time. The improved sales value usually covers the cost of the home staging project. Hazel would recommend that you do this before the estate agent arrives to take the photographs! This is the same principle with empty show homes as styling a show home enables buyers to visualise the available space and makes it more welcoming, so attracting more viewers for a faster sale and a higher price. “Hazel, I haven’t been in touch for a while, but I thought I should really pass on my thanks for the fantastic job you did on redesigning my kitchen.Your input and attention to detail was greatly appreciated, as you know I had very strong opinions on how I wanted my kitchen to look, but you really have a flair for seeing the bigger picture, you have brought in so much more natural sunlight into the room making the kitchen look bigger. This also made the views to the garden greatly enhanced. A massive thank you, I would have no hesitation on recommending you to future customers, and wish you every success.” “Hazel, We both thought how marvelous and gifted you are with everything you have done and inspired us to move everything around as per your plan. You have done so well with this hard project you have a real talent; everyone in the family thinks it’s really brilliant. Once again thank you!”

Whitwell Steam and Country Fair 8th & 9th June 2013 This year the Whitwell Steam and Country Fair will be held on the 8th & 9th June at Mansells Farm in Codicote. As always this event is held to raise much needed money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

A

fter having to cancel last year’s event because of torrential rain and flooded paddocks, we are hoping for warm sunny weather to make it an enjoyable day for all. There are some added attractions this year, with the appearance on Sunday at around 1p.m. of the hounds from Cambridge with Enfield Chase Hunt. This is a great chance for the public to see these animals up close as they are being paraded in the main arena. The Mid Herts Guild of Spinners Weavers & Dyers will also have a stand this year where they will demonstrate their skills in spinning and knitting. They plan to attempt to spin a “mile of wool” and will be looking for sponsors to help raise even more funds for the Macmillan Foundation. From small beginnings the Fair has become a major local event. In 1995 Nick Hill built a barn at Waterhall Farm,Whitwell, to house his bygone days agricultural machinery. These were all powered by stationary steam engines and mounted on trailers, so that they could be exhibited at local shows. As a result of this it was decided to have a get-together at Waterhall each year, using Nick’s machinery and Nick’s friends would bring

along their tractors, stationary engines and sometimes a traction engine. The popularity of the event grew so rapidly that in 1998 a much bigger event was held in a large paddock at Waterhall Farm and became the first “Whitwell Steam and Country Fair”.There was a funfair, including steam driven gallopers, a beer tent, and refreshments, some trade stands, along with traction engines, tractors, stationary engines, cars and commercial vehicles. Although the

weather was not brilliant, the event proved a great success. The following year it was felt that the rally needed even more space so a much larger site was made available courtesy of the Bowes Lyon family at St Paul’s Walden, conveniently near the Strathmore Arms pub. During its 9 year stay at St Paul’s Walden, the rally continued to grow with more exhibitors, entertainment, rides, food stalls, craft tents etc. Because of the agricultural requirements for this site, in 2008 the Fair moved to a new site at Mansells Farm, in Codicote. The rally is held in aid of funds for MacMillan Cancer Support and since 1998 has generated tens of thousands of pounds for the charity. Over the years the number and variety of exhibits has continued to grow and it is now a major event on the National Traction Engine Trust Rally. Every year the number of steam engines being exhibited increases. In addition in 2011 there were over 100 tractors, numerous

stationary engines, classic cars and commercial vehicles. There is also a large funfair, even more numerous trade and charity and craft stands, food stalls and not forgetting the beer tent. Among the crafts you can see demonstrations of thatching, hurdle making, chainsaw sculpture owl displays and other interesting crafts. The fair is a fun day out for the whole family with something of interest for everyone. There is a programme in the main arena which includes a parade of the big steamers, miniature steamers, vintage cars, motor cycles, tractors and gun dog demonstrations. There is even a chance after the parade of the large engines to make a donation to MacMillan and have a drive of one! This is a real favourite with the children (and a few parents as well). To run an event of this size takes a lot of organization and manpower and this is provided by a committee of local volunteers including the original team who started the event back in 1995. There is also a stalwart team of volunteers from all walks of life, who assist in various roles, during the two days of the rally and in the week leading up to it, which ensure the event will continue to be a success and raise even more, much needed funds for MacMillan. Even though it has moved to Codicote, the event is very much a Whitwell affair and despite the geographical change still remains the Whitwell Steam and Country Fair.

A look at Watton-at-Stone

Watton-at-Stone is situated midway between Stevenage and Hertford in the valley of the River Beane with a population of approx 2300, living in around 920 households. It offers a peaceful rural life style whilst at the same time having great transport links with access to the A1 and A10, and a train station with a direct line to London Kings Cross and Moorgate. The A602 formerly ran through the centre of the village between Stevenage and Hertford before a bypass was built in the 1980s through farmland to the north east. The section of the road to Hertford was renamed the A119, and the A602 then ran out of Watton-at-Stone to Ware. The name Watton first appeared in writing in an eleventh century publication of tenth century Anglo-Saxon wills as Wattun. It was later recorded in the Domesday Book as both Wodtune and Watone. The origin of the word is uncertain, and is variously ascribed to Old English wád, or woad, and ton meaning small farming settlement; or waden meaning ford; or from waétan meaning watery. The suffix -at-Stone dates from the early thirteenth century and is derived from the presence of two large examples of Hertfordshire puddingstone. A Roman Road ran from Verulamium (modern St Albans), fording the River Beane at Watton-atStone. A battle between the Danes and Saxons took place nearby in 1016 and in later years, the natural springs in the area once made the village a popular spa town. The village has a number of dwellings dating from early Tudor, such as Watton House, through to late Georgian constructions. Its Flintstone rubble

18

Anglican church dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Andrew dates from the fifteenth century and is built in the Perpendicular style. The Iron Age Aston Mirror was found nearby, closer to Watton-at-Stone than to the village of Aston, but technically in Aston parish due to the convoluted border. It is now kept at the British Museum. A collection of Belgic armour and weaponry was discovered in the mid-19th century by workers digging a drain at the north end of the village. Famous residents include boxing promoter Frank Warren, the Sun’s racing tipster ‘Templegate’ was also a previous resident of the village. It was the birthplace and childhood home of the actor Rupert Grint, (Ron Weasley in Harry Potter). The famous locomotive engineer Sir Nigel Gresley lived in Watton House until his death in 1941 and evangelical author and social campaigner Edward Bickersteth was rector of the church for twenty years from 1830 until his death in 1850. The name is also spelled unhyphenated as Watton at Stone and appears in this form on Ordnance Survey maps. Sarah Coughlan has been a resident in the village for over 3 years and told us, “I have lived in and around Hertfordshire most of my life and the move to Watton-at-stone village is hopefully going to be my final move. I feel very lucky to be a resident of the village, which has a really strong community spirit. I have been particularly struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone is; it is so refreshing to actual know, speak and socialise with ones neighbours.”
