Acoline Water Softeners – a solution for hard water
E
stablished in 1982, Acoline Water Softeners is an independent family run business that sells, maintains and repairs Water Softeners and drinking water filters. The business was setup by the parents of Graham Wilkes. At the age of 14, Graham started helping his parents with the business at weekends and school holidays. He went to college for three years to do a City & Guilds Advanced Craft Plumbing course, became a fully qualified plumber and is a registered member of the Institute of Plumbing. After college he become his father’s apprentice, installing and maintaining the water softeners. As time went on he became more involved in the business side and when his parents retired two years ago, he took over the running of the company. Angela has been with the company for a year and manages the day to day running of the office while Graham concentrates on sales and installations. Living in a hard water area such as Hertfordshire costs more than a soft water area due to Scale and Scum. Limestone scale deposits build up inside water pipes and hot water cylinders making it more expensive to heat water. It also furs up the kettle, clogs up the iron and blocks the shower head. Hard water costs more in soaps, detergents and shampoos as it is harder to lather and clothes become dull and lose their bounce. It also leaves unpleasant scum tidemarks in baths and sinks and on dishes. Softened water can greatly improve certain skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dry skin. Both skin and hair will feel softer and hair will be left shinier and more manageable. The elements in your kettle and dishwasher will shine like new and you will spend a lot less on cleaning products. 6
Acoline sell the TwinTec S3 water softener which is designed exclusively for the UK and works with all plumbing installations. It does not use electricity and has no timers or meters to worry about, simply using blocks of salt. At just 49cm high, it is designed to fit under the kitchen sink, although it can be installed in the garage or outside the house in some cases. The machines comes with a 10 year manufacturer’s warranty and can be either purchased or rented. All sales, installation and after sales service is carried out in house, no sub contractors are used and salt is delivered to your door. Graham cares about his customers and has built strong relationships with them over the years, he believes that this is the reason why the business has gone from strength to strength over the last 29 years. “We’ve been a customer for 10 years, dealing with Graham is a pleasure and buying a water softener is one the best things we have ever done!” Mrs Miguel, Hitchin “SoftWater has changed our style of living, Graham gives a very prompt and personal service” David, Hitchin “I’ve had many years of reliable service and very happy with Acoline” Mr Darcy,Tewin For more information or assistance please ring Angela on 01462 811487 or visit www.acolinesofteners.co.uk. Pre-marriage agreements – are they binding?
H
istorically, the courts have jealously guarded their powers to order financial provision upon divorce. Set against this is the legitimate desire of some couples to agree prior to a marriage how their financial resources are to be treated in the event that the marriage breaks down. Whilst pre-marriage agreements do not bind the court, recent decisions show that the court will refer to a premarriage agreement and will put it into effect unless it would be unfair to do so. What is fair? An agreement may make provision which may differ from what a court would consider fair or would order if an agreement hadn’t been entered into. Nevertheless, within reason the court will respect the parties’ wish to arrange their own affairs. The court will want to see that each party has had the opportunity of obtaining independent legal advice and has been provided with all the relevant financial information and understand the effect of the agreement. The court will also look at the circumstances before it at the time the matter comes before it for a decision. Has there been a fundamental change in the circumstances that existed when the parties entered into the agreement? Did they intend the agreement to cover the situation which now exists? The court still retains the final decision when considering the appropriate financial arrangements for the couple and any children. However, the court’s approach now appears to be that where the couple have entered into an agreement without undue pressure and with a full understanding of the facts and effect, it will hold the parties to their agreement. Sometimes the parties enter into an agreement after the marriage has taken place. Historically the courts have given weight to these agreements because there is less obvious pressure to enter into an agreement. In other words, it is not a case of “sign or you will not see me at the altar”. Furthermore, post marriage agreements are
valid and binding upon the parties to the extent that they do not exclude the power of the court to order financial provision upon divorce. The court retains the power to vary the terms of the agreement, particularly where the circumstances envisaged by the parties when they entered into the agreement have fundamentally changed. A pre-marriage or post marriage agreement may avoid acrimonious arguments upon the breakdown of a marriage. However, it is important to remember that whilst the courts seem much more ready to uphold the agreements, they are still not binding in law. Planning your home improvement project
W
hen it comes to home improvements, the most common question we hear is “how do we go about starting the process of improving our home and who do we ask for help? “ The answer is not always a straight forward one, depending upon the nature of the project you are undertaking, but obtaining the right advice from the outset is vital if your project is to go smoothly. The most common cause of dissatisfaction we hear about is where a Client has employed specialist tradesmen who undertake the majority of the work, but the overall project remains incomplete once the tradesmen have finished their specific aspects. This is not usually the tradesmen’s fault! A great example of this is perhaps a kitchen re-fit where the kitchen is part of a kitchen/dining space and the Client wants the kitchen refitted with the dining room decorated and updated at the same time. The problem comes when the Kitchen Fitters finish their work and the Client is disappointed because they still need to employ a Decorator and possibly a Joiner to finish the rest of the project. This scenario comes about because the Client has not been advised correctly or rather, has not sought out the correct advice from the correct source at the outset. When contemplating carrying out any work or improvements to your home, it is worth remembering that your home is likely the largest single investment you own so it is imperative that you seek professional advice, to ensure you get a good return on any further investment as it is easy to get it wrong. For extensions, refurbishments, conversions and any work that involves structural alterations, your first step should be to talk to a design professional such as an Architect, Architectural Designer or Structural Engineer, who will be able to advise you on whether you need Planning and/or Listed Building Consent in the first instance. They will also be able to advise you on whether you will need to comply with the Building Regulations and the Party Wall Act, or require a Build Over Agreement
with the water authority. These may well still be required even if planning consent is not. If you fail to obtain the appropriate statutory consents for work you carry out, you could face legal action from the Local Authority and be made to put your property back to the way it was before you started. You will also be required to provide these consents when selling your home and if you don’t have them, you may be forced to apply retrospectively to enable a sale to continue. This can be more costly than obtaining them at the start of the project. If the project is an internal one, you may still want to start with an Architect, or it may be more appropriate to talk to an Interior Designer. An Interior Designer can be a great asset on an internal renovation or remodel and will recommend trusted trades and specialists to carry out the entire works. The designer will then act as a Project Manager to oversee the whole project and ensure every detail is taken care of. In addition to organising and overseeing the fitting out and remodeling, they can also advise and guide you on decor and furnishings, ensuring that your project adds both desirability and value to your home. Many people may be concerned with the cost of appointing a Designer for their project, but rest assured, professional guidance and assistance with your project will pay dividends in the long run.The more time you spend in the design phase, contemplating the finer details, with your Designer using their expertise to guide you past the many pitfalls, the smoother your project will run and more likely it will be finished within budget. Most Designers, whether Architectural or Interior, offer a free of charge initial consultation or in some cases there may be a small fee. Either way, good professional advice at the outset, even at a small cost, can save thousands of pounds in the long run.

However the main attraction has to be the 2 month old piglets in the farm area. Big pigs Doris & Dolly have 17 cute piglets between them. Rhian showed me how they come up to you to be stroked; they are really playful and act like puppies. As they get bigger, you will be able to buy pig food and feed them, children and adults will have great fun seeing them in action! There is a fantastic selection of AustralianYalumba wines and the bar stocks organic presses and cordials with very few of the usual boring soft drinks so often found. The Rusty Gun even has its own bitter - Rusty Gun Bitter which is brewed exclusively by a Micro brewery. Food is available daily from 12pm to 3pm, 5.30pm to 10pm weekdays and all day over the weekend. Everything is cooked fresh and as much as possible is sourced locally including Hertfordshire Beef and Knebworth Venison, even the puddings are handmade on the premises. Starters include Homemade Fish Cake served on a bed of Watercress & Rocket, with Homemade Chilli Jam; Duck & Spring Onion Bhajis with Hoi Sin & Soy sauce, Bean Sprout, Cucumber & Spring Onion salad, and Bubble and Squeak served with Bacon, a Poached Egg and Hollandaise Sauce. The Whitwell Players
The Whitwell Players is a thriving amateur dramatics group based in the village of Whitwell, near Hitchin, performing at least three events each year in addition to hosting or organising other events that have more of a social dynamic to them. The Players is made of members of the local community and further afield, all of whom enjoy treading the boards or helping with the numerous roles behind the scenes, which are all vital in making a show a success – from direction and production to stage painting, costumes, props, lighting, sound, stage management and much more. New members are always welcome. The Players’ repertoire has become wide and varied over the years and ranges from comedy and farce to serious drama. There is much anticipated annual pantomime, which attracts a huge audience, and other general entertainment shows are performed throughout the year. Recent and memorable productions include the fabulous fast-paced farce ‘See How They Run’ which was performed to most appreciative in audiences in June, the wonderful and poignant ‘Calendar Girls’ which was a complete sell-out and raised over £1000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, as well as the hilarious Blackadder, and the uproarious ‘Allo Allo’. In 2002, to coincide with the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday, the company produced its first Shakespearean production – A Midsummer Night’s Dream – which was performed both in
18
the village hall and in the open air in the stunning St Pauls’ Walden Bury Gardens. Such was its success that Much Ado About Nothing was performed in the grounds of Stagenhoe a couple of years later. Whilst not having charitable status itself, the society aims to benefit the wider community and donates much of its income to help local charities and to support and encourage other community activities. As far as it’s possible to tell, there has been some form of amateur dramatic society in Whitwell and the wider parish of St Paul’s Walden for around a century. Initially performances appear to have been somewhat sporadic, often with a number of years passing between productions and at one point, during the 1970s, amateur drama fell within the activities of the Women’s Institute in the parish. The Whitwell Players, in its current guise, came into being in the early 1980s, starting with scripts written by members of the society itself before taking on published material. A full list of productions since 1983 is listed on their website.

Calling all Young Artists Hudson’s Media is on the hunt for talented young artists locally to illustrate their favourite historic and heritage attractions in the UK. They want everyone up to the age of 16 to put pen to paper and send them your drawings and paintings of historic houses, castles, ruins, historic gardens, museums, country houses etc. that you have visited with your mum and dad or school. You could win yourself a box of heritage toys and gifts! The competition is open to everyone up to the age of 16. Entries can be in any 2-dimensional medium and must be of an historic or heritage attraction that you have visited. Any subject will do but they do like pictures with a bit of action in them so, maybe you could draw an activity you did while you were there or something from the history of the place you visited?
Hudson’s publishes an annual heritage guide for the UK with details of over 600 places to visit called Hudson’s Historic Houses and Gardens. The guide has been published each year for the last 26 years and contains lots of information about the UK’s castles, historic houses and gardens, ruins etc. The age groups for entries are 0-8 years, 9-13 years and 14-16 years. The toy boxes will contain age appropriate toys and gifts and there is one for each age group to be won. The three winning entries will be published in next year’s guide as well as on the Hudson’s Heritage website (www.hudsonsheritage.com).
Entries should be sent by 31st August 2013 to: Hudson’s Art, 35 Thorpe Road, Peterborough, PE3 6AG Please make sure you put your name, age, address and the place you have drawn on the back of your picture as well as your parent or guardian’s contact details.
