YOUR LOCAL TAROT CARD READER Michelle Chaso began reading Tarot 17 years ago; like most young women, she wanted some answers to questions of life & love. She had begun her spiritual search several years before when her mother died. This experience left an indelible mark on her and she was searching for clarity and meaning. She never dreamed that she would end up becoming a professional tarot reader years later. Nowadays she has a large client base and conducts readings for people all around the world from Beirut, to Hong Kong, Venezuela, to Athens. Michelle told us, “If someone would have told me my hobby would evolve into working live on television for Psychic Today, doing a variety of events work from post Film premiers, to University Balls and corporate events, I wouldn’t have believed them. Life’s journey can take us to unexpected places but I believe this is part of the fun. Clients often want to know their future which I am happy to predict but I recommend clients use the wisdom of the cards to focus more on the ‘now’ as our present choices and actions can change the future. Every day I feel privileged to read for so many different people from all walks of life and to assist them in looking at situations they feel they need guidance on “ Clients can visit Michelle in person, every Tuesday and Thursday at the renowned specialist bookshop Treadwells, in London (www.treadwells-london.com) but she can do telephone or Skype consultations if this is more convenient. To learn more about the way Michelle works, visit her website www.michellechaso.co.uk; to make a booking and for all enquiries email info@michellechaso.co.uk 4

HEDGEHOG HERO! Ark Wildlife is sponsoring the Ark Hedgehog Heroes BIG Giveaway to the sum of £2,500 during October to help raise awareness of the wonderful network of dedicated carers who give their time rushing to the aid of sick and injured hedgehogs day and night

T

hroughout October, if you know somebody who takes in sick or injured hedgehogs you can nominate or vote for them by visiting www.arkwildlife.co.uk/heroes.You can vote for anyone on the list or add your own nomination. They don’t need to be a registered charity, just someone dedicating their own time to care for vulnerable hedgehogs. Votes count in the BIG Giveaway, so remember to tell all your friends about it as the carer with the most votes overall will also receive a gift pack to the value of £500. Sean McMenemy Director of Ark Wildlife says “We’ve been proud sponsors of the Ark Hedgehog Heroes BIG Giveaway since its inception and we know from all the letters we receive what a huge help the donations make at this busy time of year”. 6

He continues to explain “As well as financially helping the carers, last year’s event reached over 100,000 people and resulted in 100’s of additional orphan hedgehogs being brought in to care, young hedgehogs that otherwise would not have survived”. Ark Hedgehog Heroes BIG Giveaway runs every October as this is the busiest time for carers. This is when autumn orphans (late born hedgehog babies that haven’t grown large enough to hibernate) add to the number of hedgehogs already in care with injuries from road and garden accidents. As well as helping carers, the aim of the event is to raise greater public awareness of the plight of hedgehogs at this critical time of year. The Hedgehog Heroes BIG Giveaway started 5 years ago as a social event

on Facebook. It has grown expediential simply through huge public support and social sharing. The hedgehog was voted Britain’s National species in 2014 and is one of the best-loved creatures visiting our gardens. Being the only native mammal covered in spines it’s easily identified and the bumbling hedgehog can be seen in most gardens across the UK. However, this close association with man can also create dangers. Various common injuries can be caused by power tools such as strimmers and lawn mowers, and garden netting and other mesh items such as football goals can trap animals. Hedgehog’s have a habit of sleeping in leaf piles, compost heaps and bonfires and are therefore vulnerable to nasty injuries from garden forks and burns from fires. The Hedgehog population has declined by more than 40% in recent decades and domestic gardens are now vital habitat for their future survival. Increased public awareness will support the future of hedgehogs. You can find out more about Ark Hedgehog Heroes BIG Giveaway and other ways to help hedgehogs on the following websites. www.arkwildlife.co.uk/Heroes – Sponsoring Hedgehog Heroes www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk – British Hedgehog Preservation Society www.hedgehogstreet.org – Campaigning for hedgehog friendly gardens If you find a hedgehog in distress or out during the day, first call: 01584 890 801 or look online for your local hedgehog carer.

CHANGING A CHILD’S SURNAME...

A

n issue that frequently arises following the breakdown of a marriage or relationship is the child’s surname and whether it can be changed. The mother may wish to revert to her maiden name or, having remarried or formed a new relationship, for the child to have the same name as the mother, her new husband or partner. When a child is born, if his parents are married then it is the responsibility of both parents to register the birth. In that case, the child is invariably registered with the father’s surname. If the parents are not married, then the responsibility is that of the mother alone. The name entered in the register is the name by which it is intended the child be known. The mother may register the child with her surname, or that of the father. If the parents are subsequently married they must re-register the child’s birth within three months of the marriage. Having registered the child’s surname, there is no provision in law for the register to be changed. In other words, you are stuck with the name you are given. What is considered below is a change in the name by which you are known. Section 13 of the Children Act 1989 states that “where a residence order is in place, no person may cause the child to be known by a new surname without either the written consent of every person who has parental responsibility for the child or the leave of the court”. However, does this mean that where there is no residence order in place and/or the father does not have parental responsibility, a mother can change the child’s name without consulting the father or even if he objects? The courts have made it clear that “the change of a child’s surname is a profound and not merely a formal issue, whatever the age of the child. Any dispute on such an issue must be referred to the court whether or not there is a residence order in force and whoever has or has not parental responsibility. No disputed change should be made unilaterally”. If either parent intends to change a child’s surname, the court will expect the very first step to be consultation between the parents. If agreement is not reached, then, if the mother still insists that the child’s surname be changed, or she

simply goes ahead regardless and does so, the father may apply to the court. If the change has not yet taken place, then, in the absence of a residence order, he will apply for a “specific issue order” with the court ruling on the specific issue of the change of the child’s name. If the change has taken place, then he will apply for a “prohibited steps order” preventing the child being known by the new name. In determining the issue, the welfare of the child will be the paramount consideration of the court. Perhaps the mother may have remarried or be cohabiting and have children by her new husband or partner. It may be argued that the children should share the same surname. However the court has consistently ruled that the surname is an important link to the biological father and should be maintained. Sometimes a compromise can be achieved by the parents agreeing for the child to be known by each parent’s surname. In any event, the clear message is that this is an issue for sensitive discussion not ploughing ahead without asking the other or simply ignoring their concerns and wishes. Should you bother with...

LOYALTY CARDS? The first thing you need to understand about loyalty schemes is that they’re NOT giving you anything for free. The shops that offer rewards for your loyalty, build the cost into their schemes. Ultimately their customers pay for it, but indirectly. Therefore it’s up to you to be a savvy consumer to maximise the benefit.

T

hey’ll be furious at me for telling you this, but DO NOT LET THE LOYALTY CARDS MAKE LOYAL! Just because you get points for shopping at a certain supermarket doesn’t mean you’re getting the best deal on your groceries. Keep your eyes open and be prepared to shop around, and maybe even do your shopping at a company that doesn’t reward you in any way. When you empty the bags in your kitchen, you may still end up better off than you would have done with all your so called ‘loyalty’ points. Remember you can use cash in more shops than you can points! If you’ve saved cash, it means more. That said, it’s still worth having them. You’ll notice I said ‘them’. I did so deliberately. My advice is to get THEM ALL! Either online or in-store, you should apply for ALL the (free) loyalty schemes in the shops you frequent. That way you can benefit both in price and in points. If you’ve researched and found the best price for a product you want to buy AND you benefit from getting loyalty points (that can eventually be redeemed for something meaningful), then you really have earned the right to consider yourself a ‘SAVVY’ consumer. Some energy providers now provide points for certain loyalty cards. For example if you have your gas or electricity with E-On, you can link your account with your Tesco Clubcard and earn points every time you switch a light on. If you’re already with E-On and feel they offer you the best price, then this is an added benefit, but as I mentioned earlier, these loyalty incentives are rarely enough to switch supplier based on loyalty points alone. Most petrol stations now provide a loyalty scheme for fuel. For example you can earn Nectar

points by filling up at a BP garage. That’s fine if you were going to fill up at a BP station anyway, but please remember that it’s still more important to shop around for the best price on fuel, rather than choosing a garage based on the loyalty points you can earn. In the end you’re saving may be worth much more than the points are worth. It’s also worth noting that many credit cards offer a ‘points’ system to keep customers loyal to them. This can be very beneficial. I recently had a statement telling me that I have used my credit card so much in the last year that I’m entitled to 24 bottles of Pinot Grigio! Considering I practically bathe in the stuff, this made me do a little dance in my kitchen. I would have purchased the items anyway, but by ensuring I paid for them on my credit card (whilst paying off the balance in full), I have earned myself a little treat!! Always do your research before you get a credit card. Make sure you look at the loyalty scheme they operate and ensure they reward buying things in shops you use the most.

Finally don’t forget to use them and ensure you have a big purse or wallet. If you follow the advice above, you’ll need one!

JOSE WILL BE RUNNING THE LONDON MARATHON IN APRIL 2015 TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE NEURO FOUNDATION WHO HAVE SUPPORTED OUR FAMILY, HELPING US COPE WITH OUR 6 YEAR OLD SON EMILIO’S CONDITION – NF1. On the 24th April 2013 we found Emilio in bed early morning after having what looked like a stroke! We were rushed to A&E at Hinchingbrooke in Huntingdon where he had a further seizure and became very poorly. After numerous tests he was diagnosed withNeurofibromatosis or NF1 for short. In 2014 he suffered another seizure at school and is now taking anti Epilepsy medicine. Neurofibromatosis is a neuro-genetic condition affecting the nerve tissue, Emilio may live a long healthy life or he may be dealt with numerous medical conditions which include: skin lumps, large disfiguring benign tumours, tumours on the nerves of sight, curvature of the spine, brain and spinal tumours, internal tumours, increased risk of epilepsy and malformation of the long bones which can cause problems in children and may result in operations/amputation. Neurofibromatosis is more common than Cystic Fibrosis but still there is little known about it. It is living with the unknown which has changed our lives and Emilio’s life forever, normal everyday activities are not as straight forward as they used to be. Emilio tires very easily so we have to adapt quickly to meet his different needs depending if he is having a “good” day or not. Emilio has also lost some of his confidence in doing things on his own unless we are near him. He is seen by over 12 different specialists at 4 different hospitals, going to the numerous appointments are part of his everyday life. We just hope and pray that one day in the not too distant future they find a cure. Emilio is our inspiration, he takes everything in his stride and always has a smile on his face. Every penny helps The Neuro Foundation Charity help families like us in the UK. You can find out more about the Neuro Foundation at www.nfauk.org Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Love, Jose, Mel, Emilio, Luis and Mimi

HALLOWEEN October 31st

W

hen most people think of Halloween, pumpkins, trick-or-treating and scary costumes spring to mind. Today, the practice of Halloween has become a hugely commercial event and is celebrated worldwide. Many new elements have been added to the already large list of spooky paraphernalia over the years, and so the Halloween we know today, is somewhat different to its early origins. Halloween is a combination of Christian and Pagan rituals and has evolved over the years to become one of the biggest and financially viable festivals of the year (after Christmas that is!). Halloween can be traced back to Pagan times and the ancient Celtic harvest festival known as Samhain (pronounced sow-in), which took place on November 1st each year. The festival marked the end of the summer season (often known as the light season) and the inevitable arrival of the cold dark winter (or dark season). The 31st of October was the last day of harvesting before winter and was traditionally a time where the harvest was packed and stocked and the livestock killed and stored before the arrival of winter. Many Pagans believed that on this day, the living and the dead crossed paths and the dead wandered the Earth in the form of ghosts. Originally the 31st of October was known as All Hallows’ Eve, the eve before Samhain. People left food outside their doors to ward off ghosts, while others dressed in masks and other costumes in an attempt to quell any chance of a recognition by the dead. However, sometime in the 8th century, as the Christians tried to convert the Pagans, it is believed that All Hallows’ Eve or Halloween and the festival of Samhain became Christianized. All Saints Day was moved to 1st November and combined with the festival of 16

Samhain. The 31st October became known as the Eve of All Saints Day when the dead awaited salvation or entry to the next world. On this night they were in limbo and floated amongst the living. Both beliefs someone became infused and the result was the beginning of what we now know as Halloween. In the nineteenth century, Irish and Scottish immigrants travelled to North America, and brought with them many of the customary traits associated with Halloween today. Although the Jack-o-lantern is hugely symbolic of Halloween today, it is believed that this custom originally stemmed from Ireland, where turnips were carved and used as lanterns to ward off evil spirits. On reaching America, the immigrants soon realized that turnips were not as widespread and therefore the pumpkin replaced the turnip. The name Jacko-lantern is from Irish Folklore and called after a farmer called Stingy Jack. Other practices associated with Halloween including lighting bonfires, hanging bats from your ceiling and trick-or-treating can also be traced to the past. Bonfires were commonly lit at the festival of Samhain and would often attract bats. Where trick-or-treating can be traced to a custom known as “souling” where people would go from door to door singing and begging for food, drinks and money. In return, they promised to pray for the dead souls on All Saints Day. This practice has even been mentioned in Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona and is believed to have been an early form of trick-or-treating. Today Halloween can generate up to £300 million and is the one day of the year where witches, wolves, ghosts and ghouls are encouraged to walk amongst us!! eo. W. Blow of Welwyn and Alfred Scales of Hertford were acquired by the company and until quite recently continued to trade under their original names. The family then decided that, to reflect their ownership, all funeral offices should trade as AUSTIN’S. The staff at AUSTIN’S ensure that families receive a superior quality of service, providing sympathetic and personal attention at these most sensitive of times. In 1997 the Austin family designed and built Harwood Park Crematorium and Memorial Gardens. Set in the beautiful countryside of Hertfordshire on the outskirts of Stevenage, Harwood Park is one of the few privately owned crematoria in the country. Funeral services are provided seven days a week in peaceful and tranquil surroundings. A wide selection of memorials is available for dedication in the twenty-five acres of Memorial Gardens, which include a beautiful lake and waterfall feature. Those wishing to lay their loved one to rest in a local churchyard or cemetery may like to consider

the extensive range of traditional memorials available from AUSTIN’S own stonemasons, whose offices are located in Church Street, Welwyn. AUSTIN’S also provide a tailor made prepayment funeral plan. Designed to give peace of mind to families and individuals by relieving them of the worry of funeral expenses and arrangements. ‘The Hertfordshire Funeral Plan’, operated by an independent trust, is exclusive to AUSTIN’S and gives the opportunity of selecting and securing all aspects of the funeral service in advance. Our commitment to bereaved families has established Austin’ as Hertfordshire’s leading, family owned and operated Funeral Director. Those working within our family business are proud to provide a standard of professionalism, dedication and depth of knowledge, recognized by members of the public, professionals and other funeral directors.
