LOCAL NEWS
Codicote FC - History in the Making
With the earliest records going back to the 1913/14 season, Codicote Football Club is on the verge of making club history with its promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League later this year. This will be the first time Codicote has been at Step 6 of English football; the club has come a long way from the days when players chased the cows off the pitch. But as the club has gone from strength to strength their have been many sacrifices on the way, the first team now have to play outside the village at Gosling Sports Park in an effort to keep pace with the facility grading that comes hand in hand with the teams successes. While the team performs on the pitch, Codicote’s committee are also being tested as the new league will involve entertaining the opposition officials, players and League officials at half time and after game; just as you would in the Premier League. Volunteers will be needed to operate the turnstile; make announcements on the tannoy system, provide refreshment for spectators and other things that were not necessary in the Herts County League. Jim Bundy told us, “The club has a serious passion to succeed, however there will always be a limit to how far a village side can go without some serious Arabian or Russian money. The Spartan South Midlands could be our limit but why not try and make
our own history rather than living off past glories. We need more volunteers, committee member, coaches and sponsors but ultimately our goal is to return to The John Clements Memorial ground in Codicote. Success has its pit falls as well as it high’s. At present the highs out way the lows 10 to 1, especially when you consider we will be pitting our team against the local heavy weights of Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Hoddesdon and Harpenden next season. In addition entry into the world famous FA Cup for the first time. All these things we’re looking forward to; so a home tie against the Premier League Champions might be some way off but it’s something no other Codicote side could even consider. But having a strong 1st team is not the only success; Rob Frowd has helped build a strong youth team with over 65 boys from 7 to 17 representing the village. The club has formed a strong link with the local Codicote School and year on year new teams are being formed. But to give these young budding stars a future it’s important that we get it right at the top. Already this season youth players have played a major role in the Senior set up with Tom Bundy, James Doherty, Zack Broad, William Rogers and others all Codicote boys at the age of 16 representing the Club’s reserve side. The U17 Cup Finalists, the U11 League Champions and Cup Finalists, and the U18 Mid Floodlit Team Southern Counties Floodlit Champions, are all testament to the youths’ hard work and suggest a great future for the senior sides. “If you can help as a match day volunteer, committee member, running the tannoy system at Gosling or even coaching or managing, please drop us a line. We are also looking for new players at all levels.” Jim Bundy (Chairman), 07711 716 089, codicote.fc@hotmail.co.uk www.codicotefc.co.uk
Classic Steam Train goes through Knebworth A few weeks back, train spotters were delighted to see an A4 Pacific No. 4464 Bittern steam train in original LNER Garter Blue livery, storm through Knebworth as part of the Great Britain V Tour – a 9 day steam hauled rail tour from London to Inverness and back. Weighing 167 tons and carrying eight tons of coal and 5,000 gallons of water, No. 4464 ‘Bittern’ was designed for hauling prestigious high-speed express trains on the King’s Cross to Edinburgh east coast main line. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and out of the same stable as No. 4468 ‘Mallard’, which holds the world record for the highest speed ever attained by a steam locomotive (126 mph on 3rd July 1938). Discover North Hertfordshire rambles with a new walks guide Do you have the urge to pull on your boots and walk, but don’t know where to go?
W
ell the North Herts Ramblers Group could have the answer for you. Because they have just created a new publication which brings together 10 walks from around the county. Ranging from five miles to just under seven miles, the rambles can be completed by most in less than half a day. Some of the villages which have been included in the booklet are: Ashwell; Hexton; Knebworth; Kimpton; Ayot St Lawrence; Great Offley; Ickleford; Pirton – to name but a few. But what’s most important is the fact that the walks have been exhaustively checked by local Ramblers who have double-checked the routes and have got lost so you don’t have to. And each walk in the collection is accompanied by a map with a thorough description. The book has been dedicated to the memory of Ken Payne (1918 – 2011), a volunteer rambler who devoted much of his life to ensuring the paths in North Herts remained useable. The booklet costs just £6 (including P & P), and all proceeds will be ploughed back into the Ramblers – a charity which ensures that our local footpaths and open spaces remain accessible for everyone.
Who are the Ramblers?
The Ramblers is Britain’s Walking Charity and organises more than 38,000 walks every year, it works to make it easy for everyone to walk, whether in countryside, cities, hills, coasts and on or off the beaten track. The charity has a grass roots network of over 17,000 volunteers who work tirelessly for a walking Britain. For over 75 years it has helped build and protect Britain’s 130,000 mile long path network, it campaigns for better walking routes and more walking opportunities. There are more than 115,000 members across the country and Membership costs just £3 a month and includes a host of benefits.
If you would like a copy of 10 Walks in North Hertfordshire, then please send a cheque for £6 to Harold Stokes, 15,Whitney Drive, Stevenage, Herts, SG1 4BE. Cheques should to be made out to North Herts Ramblers Group. Village Life readers can enjoy a special discounted membership offer with the Ramblers. All you have to do to claim a 20% discount is visit www.ramblers.org.uk/offer and quote the special discount code of U12B2W. This means for an individual membership the price is reduced to just £24.80 (equivalent to just over £2 per month) and for a joint membership with this offer the cost drops to just £32.80. June 2012

WELLBEiNG
How about getting rid of some weight?
D
id you realize that in 2009 almost a quarter of all adults in the UK were obese? At that date we were the fattest nation in Europe and the figure is growing. The cost to our health system will be substantial as all the weight related diseases kick in. And who will be paying for this? Yes, us.We will be paying for it physically with our lethargy and discomfort, with our high blood pressure, our heart disease and cancers. We will be paying for it emotionally with our lack of control, our lack of self esteem and focus, and with our excuses. We will be paying for it in monetary terms, too, as someone has to pay taxes to support the hospital bills. Honestly, do you want to lose weight and feel happier? Well, do it properly. Remember that your body is yours, no one else can do this for you, in fact they really aren’t even interested. You have to do this yourself and if you aren’t prepared to then not only will you stay the same but over time you will actually get bigger and unhealthier. 6
Village Life (Hitchin) Issue 35, 0612.indd 6
I know this is harsh but it is reality, I have seen it. Over the years I have helped many people to lose weight. Some have had the right attitude and it has left quickly, others gave up, and others perservered. I have learned many things. Some people don’t have the motivation, some don’t have the money, some don’t like exercise, some don’t want to give up their ‘treats’. Many have other issues that contribute to their eating; stress, or relationship issues. These are excuses that have become programmed in! So how can I help you here? Well, I have spent the last 6 months putting together and testing a special series of 5 hypnotherapeutic audios, called ‘the on-track weight loss series’.The idea is to listen to one a day to keep you on track every day, over 5 weeks. You dump the old habits, and then imprint new healthy habits in your mind. The audios are beautifully hypnotic and you just lie back at home and listen. Let my voice soothe you and inspire you to take control, let it action you to eat healthily, think thin,
and motivate you to some sort of gentle exercise. Know you can make the changes necessary; do it, see it and feel it happen. They are reasonably priced, mp3 or cd, and you just listen. You will probably find that they enhance other programmes you may be on.They are a good boost to action. Find them on the website under hypnotherapy recordings or scan the QR code with your smart phone. Go look, listen to the samples there and find the very special deal for June. However, in some cases the fatty tissue is so pronounced that the air is blocked and every so often the breathing stops. This is called sleep apnea and should be discussed straight away with your Doctor. www.marilyntuck.co.uk Knebworth phone 07962 811907

Hat-trick of awards for Austin’s Staff at Austin’s Funeral Directors are celebrating once again after winning three prestigious business awards...
T
he family firm, which has eight branches in Hertfordshire and owns and runs Harwood Park Crematorium and Memorial Gardens in Stevenage, picked up the Excellence in Customer Service award, Medium to Large Business of theYear award and the prestigious overall Business of theYear award at the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards. Organised by the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry the awards are designed “to celebrate success and achievement and boost business confidence in Hertfordshire” and attracted a huge number of entries. Over 300 people attended the gala presentation evening which was held at the Porsche Centre in Hatfield. Claire Austin, the tenth generation of her family to run Austin’s said: “I was absolutely thrilled to win these awards. Customer service is our number one priority so to have our hard work recognised officially is great. To then go on and win the other two awards, including overall Business of theYear, is amazing. All three are testament to the hard work and commitment of every single member of staff at Austin’s and I’m incredibly proud of their achievements.”
8
Village Life (Hitchin) Issue 35, 0612.indd 8
Presenting the Business of theYear award to Claire, who was also a finalist in the Entrepreneur of theYear category, the judges commented: “In an outstanding field, our winner tonight demonstrated all the qualities one would wish to see in a successful company. Over a 10 year period it has increased turnover on a consistent basis, delivering impressive growth in its profits. It has achieved this by delivering upon a clear and imaginative growth strategy which has been driven by its management and supported by its staff. Austin’s Funeral Service is not only outstanding within its own sector but is an exemplar for all business.” Claire and her team are no strangers to awards; in November the company won Most Successful Medium Business category at the Hertfordshire Business Awards and in October Austin’s won the Service Excellence category at the East of England Business Champions Awards. Earlier this year Claire travelled to Mexico to pick up the international NextGen Professional of theYear Award in recognition of her achievements as head of the 300 year old firm.

BuSiNESS
Are you paying too much tax? Adam Fernandes, Business Development Manager from UHY WKH Partnership Chartered Accountants talks about whether you are paying the right amount of tax…
A
quarter of all taxpayers may be paying the wrong amount of tax due to incorrect PAYE codes. One of the accountancy firms we are in partnership with, UHY HackerYoung, looked at hundreds of the latest batch of PAYE codes sent to its clients to determine the exact number requiring some form of adjustment. Around 25% of codes reviewed from a random, non-risk graded sample would have resulted in the taxpayer paying too much, or in some cases too little, tax. In many cases the amount of tax in error was thousands of pounds – for many of the taxpayers concerned a very significant amount of money. Taxpayers with multiple sources of income – such as pensioners and higher rate taxpayers – are particularly vulnerable to PAYE coding errors. In some cases HMRC automatically tried to collect tax on property or interest income through PAYE when the actual amount owed by taxpayers was zero. John Sheehan, partner at our Letchworth office, has commented that: “HMRC is trying to collect tax early to improve its cashflow without asking taxpayers first. This usually isn’t in the interest of taxpayers. Many taxpayers would be significantly better off paying tax on their investments via their self-assessment returns. To make matters worse, HMRC’s estimates of how much tax is actually due
from investment income are often highly inaccurate. Unlike self-assessment, if taxpayers overpay through PAYE, they don’t receive any interest from HMRC when the adjustment is made. The big concern is that many taxpayers simply won’t think to check and will end up paying tax twice.” Where taxpayers are earning close to the higher rate tax band, HMRC often assumes that they will be a higher rate taxpayer the following year – even if they have never been a higher rate taxpayer before. John also said: “HMRC usually has all the information it needs on its systems, so has little excuse for making assumptions and getting it wrong.” According to our findings, pensioners appear to be particularly vulnerable to having their personal tax free allowances incorrectly restricted. In two-thirds of cases where the tax code was wrong, the pensioners ended up paying too much tax. John continued: “Pensioners often have multiple sources of income, so seem to be particularly vulnerable to PAYE errors. Most, however, are on modest incomes and may not notice for quite a long time, if at all, that they are owed money.” “Even if they have underpaid, this can cause serious financial problems in later years when HMRC collects what can be a hefty tax bill.”

PINEHILL HOSPITAL
P
art of the Ramsay Healthcare Group, Pinehill Hospital is a small private hospital offering a range of high quality, modern healthcare which is more affordable that you may think. Having had surgery at Pinehill 10 years ago, Jose was pleased to see that it still has the same warm, homely feeling that he remembered. The hospital is quiet and calm and set in beautiful surroundings. With private rooms, it is not like staying on a busy ward trying to rest with nurses coming and going. For Premium Care patients (those who have health insurance or who are self-paying) Pinehill offers immediate access to healthcare, flexible appointment times, choice of consultant, individual pre operative assessment, a healthy a la cart menu, single en suite room accommodation, a visit from a management representative, priority discharge and individual physiotherapy sessions. The staff are like one big family with great links between departments. There is free parking, wifi, a restaurant and visitors can come at anytime of the day. When it comes to diagnosing the problem, whatever it is , Pinehill will get to the bottom of it.They have a full X Ray department, CT and MRI scanning and all types of tests so they can get to the root cause of the problem quickly. You could have an x-ray and a blood test all in the same day and get results within a day or two.You can also book a Health Screening session where you will spend a full hour with a GP who will check everything and send a comprehensive report directly to you within 3 weeks Pinehill covers almost all aspects of healthcare with many departments including Paediatrics (services for children and teenagers up to the age of 16), a Sleep Disorder Clinic, Orthopaedics (Back and Knee pain with bespoke hips specially made), Ladies Problems, Ears Nose & Throat, Cosmetic Surgery (including Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for men and women and Laser Hair Removal), Urology and Pain Management. Patients can either use their private health insurance or self pay. A Fixed Cost Care Scheme is designed for people who wish to fund their own private healthcare. The scheme covers a range of procedure and includes the medical and nursing care, the surgeons fee, operating costs, drugs or dressings as well as private en suite accommodation and
meals. Should patients need to stay longer than initially thought, there is no additional cost. This provides peace of mind knowing the total cost of a procedure with no surprises. Pinehill runs a series of free information and open evenings. The next event on the 19th June where you can meet one of Pinehill’s top Cosmetic Consultants in a free 10 minute private session. A great opportunity to get all your questions answered! “I was looked after excellently.Everything was explained thoroughly too.Lovely comfortable rooms and very helpful and friendly staff.” “It all went well, from booking in,to Mr McCullough visiting to explain the procedure, the anaesthetic and the nursing care was excellent.” “I commend you all in your efficiency and the attention I received, nothing was too much trouble and made my stay here a pleasure. The entire staff are a credit to the hospital.”

Local Businesses thriving in a recession “I’ve gone from working on my own to working with a group where all the members support each other. Where else can you get free advice from a lawyer, marketing expert or range of trades? It also provides me with a great supply chain from all the different
D
businesses and I get to meet my suppliers every week!” Steve Watts, Joiner
espite the doom and gloom of the recession with many businesses struggling to survive, there is a set of local businesses who are actually thriving! These businesses are part of the Arena Breakfast Meeting, a friendly breakfast group that meets every Tuesday morning at the Homestead Court Hotel in Welwyn Garden City. Meetings start at 6.45am and are finished by 9.00am so they do not interfere with the normal business day. They are structured but fun and lively, offering a supportive business environment in which local business people can get together to network, learn valuable new marketing skills and develop strong personal relationships that lead to significant new business opportunities. As only one member from each business category is allowed in the group, by joining you lock out your competitors and will benefit exclusively from the business generated. During the last 12 months, more than £1m worth of business has been passed within the group which means that each seat in the group is worth an average of £35,000 per year. On arrival at Arena, you will get to meet lots of local business people and during the meeting you will have the opportunity to tell people about your business and explain the type of contacts that would be useful for you. In a typical meeting around 45 business opportunities will be passed around, these are word of mouth referrals where a door has been opened by one of the members through recommendation. You just never know who might be in the room or more importantly who they may know. If you are looking to get in to a certain company to promote your goods or services, by asking the group for help, there is a good chance that they will either personally know a contact or be able to get access to someone
16

through the people they know. This is the power of networking, it is like having a group of sales people looking out for opportunities for you to do business. There is a big focus on business training ranging from Networking Skills to Presentation Skills and how to find referrals. Also the group provides fantastic support, the members are predominantly business owners and understand the pressures and challenges faced in running a small business.

The group allows you to benefit from the experience and knowledge of the members and get an understanding of what is happening in the wider business community.” Nigel Dowse, IT Support “In addition to getting new customers, the group has helped me become much more commercially aware and I now find it much easier to promote my business effectively when I meet people.” Steve Moore, Electrician “I joined the group 3 years ago and it is one of the best business decisions I’ve made. The group is now responsible for generating as much as 30% of my turnover.” David Mason, Financial Advisor Did you know that 98% of businesses rely on referrals to generate new business however only 3% of businesses have a strategy for referrals. The Arena Breakfast Meeting is the most effective way of marketing your business by meeting people face to face to generate referrals. Jo Briley, Membership Co-ordinator for the group told us,” Arena offers the opportunity to have breakfast with like minded business people in a relaxed atmosphere. We
have a great time while generating fantastic business for one another. I joined the group in 2008 when there were just a few members and now it generates a significant amount of my turnover. We currently have 30 members and are looking to grow the group to 40+ in the next few months, this will significantly increase the amount of business that we pass to each other.”
“I joined the group when I started my business and now I couldn’t be without it. I’ve got a great group of friends and contacts and I get business from it every week!” Tracey Scales, Travel Agent The Arena group meets every Tuesday at 6.45am at: Homestead Court Hotel, Homestead Lane, Welwyn Garden City, AL7 4LX If you would like to visit the group and meet like minded local businesses then contact Jo Briley on 0845 313 3353, don’t forget to bring lots of business cards when you visit! Roman Artefacts uncovered in Welwyn Village
N
etherdown (Herts) Ltd is a local family firm of house builders and developers that have been trading fromWelwyn Garden City for over 30 years. Managing Director Gordon Roughan trained as a carpenter then went on to be a site manager looking after large teams of construction workers. In 1977 he formed his own company offering carpentry services and in 1982 started building homes with his first development in Knebworth. He went on to build small developments all around theVillage Life area. Netherdown focuses on small sites of up to seven houses, providing luxury homes that are traditional on the outside but with some contemporary ideas on the inside, handmade kitchens, lots of design input, gardens that have been landscaped by Julie Wise and displays in the show house by ‘local artists’.Wherever possible they try to use local companies and materials and ensure the homes are highly energy efficient. Netherdown are members of Considerate Construction, a national scheme designed to encourage best practice beyond statutory requirements. It is important for them to keep the neighbours and villagers informed and to ensure that developments work with the beautiful village area. They recently completed seven new homes in Welwyn Village and named the road ‘Trevena Gardens’ after the late Mr Kit Trevena, former headmaster of St Mary’s School and founder of the Welwyn Anglo-French Twinning Association. Before planning permission was granted, they were required to excavate the site in School Lane as Roman artefacts have been found previously in the surrounding area. Seven years ago an excavation on their adjacent land resulted in a small number of bones and pottery being found, so they were not expecting to find much this time round. A team of four people from Archaeological Solutions Ltd in Hertford spent eight weeks digging the whole 18
Village Life (Hitchin) Issue 35, 0612.indd 18
of the footprint of the site to 1.5m and the road to 1m. A substantial number of Roman artefacts were uncovered which showed evidence of a Roman Villa with outbuildings, a corn drier and a well somewhere near School Lane which was on the Roman road to Colchester. It seemed that there would have been a high level of activity in a condensed area, bearing in mind that there would only have been around ten houses in Welwyn at the time. They found a kiln with a whole pot inside, several pieces of terracotta, a beam slot for a timber wall, a silver broche, tweezers which I got to handle (amazing to think a 2000 year old pair of tweezers still worked!) The pottery found included a variety of fine wares including Samian Ware which was imported to Britain from Roman Gaul. Several of the pieces could be identified to individual potters such as Setters and Butrio who operated between AD120 and 145.They also found floor tiles, roof tiles, a rubbish area with dropped bones and a large number of nails, arrow heads and flints. The surrounding area was mainly undeveloped farmland before homes were constructed in the 1950’s which unfortunately would have destroyed many other artefacts. The dig yielded over 300 items, an unbelievable find. Gordon told us, “The excavation had a huge knock on effect to the cost of building, however it has been very rewarding to have found so many wonderful pieces. We will be offering the new homeowners at Trevena Gardens a mounted artefact display that they can put on the wall. We are also planning to create an illuminated display at the entrance to the site for the whole village to enjoy. Finally we also hope to donate further pieces to the local school and museum, as well as keeping a few items on display at our head office in Welwyn Garden City.We have plans for another five home project in Welwyn and are preparing for another excavation, who knows what we will find next?”

imram Veterinary Centre can be found at 31 Church Street in the heart of picturesque Old Welwyn Village. Stephanie Writer-Davies, the practice founder, acquired the building in December 1998 and it has been sympathetically refurbished in keeping with the ambience of the village. Many of the original features have been retained including the cooking range which has been restored - look out for it in the consulting room. By April 1999, Mimram Veterinary Centre was open and committed to providing the best possible care for pets and their owners. Since opening, the practice has grown to five vets, five nurses plus a trainee nurse and five receptionists. Between them, the staff have a wealth of knowledge, not only on the health and welfare of animals, but also on general animal matters, training and behavioural problems and all have their own pets. It is a particularly exciting time for the
team as the practice is being extended and refurbished – come and see the results at our open day later in the year! All our vets are experienced and capable of dealing with all problems routinely encountered in small animal practice. Our team of dedicated, qualified veterinary nurses will ensure your pet is comfortable and well looked after and they will aim to make your pet’s visits as enjoyable as possible. We have X-ray, ultrasound, laboratory and surgical facilities and also offer an Out of hours emergency service. The practice is easily accessible from the A1(M), with parking to both the front and back of the building as well as being a stone’sthrow away from a free public car park. If you are looking for a traditional, privately owned veterinary practice offering compassionate individualised patient care then Mimram Vets is the place for you and your pets. merCare is a Codicote based home care company, which is registered with the Care Quality Commission to provide personal care to people in their own homes – washing, dressing, bathing, companionship, meal preparation, escorting to medical appointments and general help with anything that has become difficult for people in their daily lives. The business was set up in January by sisters Karry Omer and Susie Stefanou who grew up in Codicote and have always been actively involved in the local community, which they balanced with careers and raising children. It was whilst looking for care for a family member that they realised there was a gap in the market for real quality care from a company that understood the difficulties faced by people as they grow
older in a rural area. This is where OmerCare is different from other care companies. Karry and Susie told us, “We have been shocked to see how little some Care companies pay their staff. Our customers deserve the best care possible, and this requires the best staff. Our staff are therefore paid a fair wage, well trained, supported, and valued. Our customers can expect a high quality service, with carers who turn up when they are expected, and who enjoy their work. We do not like the traditional ‘task based’ approach to home care, and believe that what most people want is a flexible service. If one of our care givers arrives on a sunny morning to see a client who fancies a drive out to a garden centre for lunch, even though they had booked the carer to do the laundry, then the garden centre takes precedence! In addition, we help people remain connected to their communities, and support them to continue to attend the Day Centres, Friendly Clubs and other local groups in their villages. We appreciate that it is a big decision to allow people you have not met before to come into your home and your life, and we value the trust that our customers place in us and our staff.”
