DATCHWORTH PUB BUCKS THE TREND With 31 pubs closing every week across the UK1 the Plough in the picturesque Hertfordshire village of Datchworth is bucking the trend having been re-opened under new ownership. Local residents Nick & Diana Collingridge seized the opportunity to purchase this village pub after Greene King placed the freehold on the market. Nick said “A good pub is an important part of the community in any village, and this is especially the case in such a friendly village as Datchworth. It is great that we have been able to secure this pub which had been somewhat unloved in recent times, and I know from many conversations with locals that its rebirth is warmly welcomed” The pub was closed for a short while to allow refurbishment to take place and is now under the management of the team from the Good Beer Guide listed Our Mutual Friend in Stevenage. Nick added “We are delighted to have such a well-respected, experienced and enthusiastic team as our tenants at the Plough” Andy Rawnsley, licensee of both pubs commented “We are delighted to have the opportunity to run the Plough and will work hard to deliver a welcoming pub that is a focal point for the village.” The Plough now has an emphasis on quality real ale and cider including the popular Highwayman, a locally brewed beer, from Buntingford Brewery. Local celebrity Barry Norman formally reopened the pub to cheers from a large crowd of locals last month. http://camra.org.uk/camra-urges-55000-festival-goers-to-lobby-government-over-failure-to-close-planning-loopholes-as-pub-closures-rise-to-31-per-week/

RIVERS BEANE AND MIMRAM CAMPAIGNS ARE SO CLOSE TO SUCCESS The Rivers Beane and Mimram are two of only 200 chalk rivers left in the world and for many years they have been running dry in our area. The River Beane Restoration Association and Friends of the Mimram have long been raising awareness of the issue of over-abstraction. This occurs when the water companies take too much water from the river. Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, said, “I have campaigned alongside these groups for some years now and actually walked along the River Beane’s dry riverbed with over 50 local campaigners to highlight how much water is being taken. “We are making huge progress here in Hertfordshire, and I am delighted that the Environment Agency has announced they are proposing to change Affinity Water’s licence. They have served notice on the water company to significantly reduce the amount of water which is allowed to be abstracted at Whitehall Pumping Station for the River Beane. To protect the River Mimram they want to completely revoke the licence to abstract water at Fulling Mill. The notices will take effect from 1st April 2018, but we hope to see progress before then. “We are so close, we just need to keep on campaigning and our rivers will flow again locally.” 4

Herts at War WRITTEN BY LEIGH GOLDSMITH (LILYLAWLER@GOOGLEMAIL.COM)

2014 has seen the worldwide recognition and celebration of the centenary of the Great War of 1914. Across the world, commemorations and memorial services have been carried out to remember and honor all those who tragically lost their lives as a direct result of World War One between 1914 and 1918.

T

he county of Hertfordshire was not exempt from the hardship of war and as the fighting gathered momentum, it was not long before the young men of Hertfordshire were called to battle. For many, it would be their last journey, never to return home. For others, their lives would change forever. Those who lost loved ones were forced to continue life alone and often penniless, while others struggled to care for their now disabled spouse. From bombing raids to food rationing, life in Hertfordshire dramatically changed and now residents lived their lives under the veil of a raging World War. In 2012, the initial concept of Herts at War was born. The idea of documenting, investigating and commemorating the untold and forgotten stories of life in Hertfordshire from 1914 – 1918 became the driving force behind the evolution of the heritage project. For the founders of Herts at War, the lives of both civilians at home in Hertfordshire and the soldiers on the front line who offered their lives for their country, deserved a voice. Over the last two years the Herts at War project has carried out substantial research and uncovered extraordinary tales of those who lived and died in Hertfordshire during the Great War. Along with the founders, Dan Hill, Jon Grant and Dan Townsend, over one hundred volunteers and a team of historians, teachers and heritage workers, are committed to bringing Hertfordshire’s wartime past to life. “The centenary of World War One provides huge opportunity to promote remembrance throughout the county and build a lasting legacy for all those in the county who have lived and died through the war,” Dan Hill has said. As one of the largest individual commemorative Great War projects in the UK, Herts at War are striving to educate and involve all aspects of the community.

8

Another key aim of the project is to raise enough money to purchase and build a memorial in St. Julien, where Hertfordshire lost so many of its men. The memorial placement is scheduled to take place on July 31st 2017, one hundred years to the day since the unforgettable loss. On August 4th 2014 the Herts at War exhibition opened their doors to the public at The Arcade in Letchworth. The project unveiled the result of months and years of hard work in documenting and detailing the fascinating stories and artifacts relating to the civilians and soldiers of Hertfordshire. Over the next four years, the exhibition will travel through the county to different towns and villages including Knebworth, Sawbridgeworth and Hitchin. Also running now and until Tuesday 25th November is the “A School At War” exhibition at the British Schools Museum, Hitchin. For more information on this and the current exhibitions and events scheduled to take place around the area, please visit www.hertsatwar.co.uk to find out more.

How to... BUY A

PET

Over the years I have dealt with many consumer problems concerning animals. You name it, from the puppies that suddenly become ill the day after purchase to the animals with hereditary conditions where the breeder takes no responsibility after their wallet is full of your £20 notes. Sadly it’s all too common.

I

have to say that on many occasions, I find myself becoming furious with consumers and the irresponsible way they often go about purchasing a new addition to their family. If you want to do things the correct way, without getting ripped off, then listen carefully to my advice. Firstly, animal rescue centres are absolutely overflowing at the moment with dogs, cats, rabbits etc. that have been abandoned either by irresponsible, ghastly people who didn’t think carefully before taking a pet on, or by folk whose circumstances have changed through no fault of their own. Obviously, if you feel able to rescue a pet, and take on any problems that animal may come with, this is preferable. Check to make sure the animal rescue centre has a good reputation. However, there are many people out there who want to experience the pleasure of raising a pet from a young age. If this is the case, then chances are you’re going to have to part with some money. As tempting as it may be, NEVER purchase an animal being advertised on the internet. No self -respecting breeder would ever advertise an animal on online sites for buying and selling. You may well get a bargain dog or cat, but if that animal has started life in some kind of pet breeding factory with little regard for the animals’ welfare, you may be taking on an expensive and potentially dangerous problem for the future.

It is also worth mentioning that unless you have met the animal’s mother and father, you have no idea of the temperament or health of the animal you’re purchasing. NEVER buy an animal if you cannot meet its parents. If you are told to meet the ‘breeder’ at a half-way point or in a lay-by, then massive alarm bells should be ringing in your head! So what SHOULD you do? Well, my advice is to search out a good, reputable breeder with the right ethics. Generally, making contact with a breed specific club who can put you in touch with good breeders, or (for dogs) finding a Kennel club fully accredited breeder will ensure you are buying a good quality and well-bred animal. You will have to pay more money, but with pets and most things in life, generally it’s worth every penny. If you DO buy an animal, then ensure you organise good pet insurance to run from the minute you commit to buying him/her. If you have a problem, then you are still covered by your usual consumer statutory rights.

Finally, as always if you follow my advice but still have a problem with a furry addition to your family, then you can always contact me at BBC Three Counties Radio and I’ll do what I can to help.

Souvenirs

As you read this you might have just returned from holiday or about to go in the next few weeks. If you are going to a foreign country, or indeed if you are staying in the UK, buy a souvenir made by local people, not the mass produced in a factory.

S

WRITTEN BY ANNA MANGINI

ince my early 20’s, when I first travelled to ‘Yugoslavia’ I have bought crafts made locally to take back with me, as presents or for myself. 30 years on and I am still enjoying my first kilim bought at a local market in Split. Every time I sit at the dining take it takes me back to that market square with my travel companions. Nowadays, as well as buying for myself, I buy for Crafts of the World Online, and I still relish the thrill to find and support local craftsmen/women be this in China, Tunisia, Morocco, or wherever I happen to be at the time. In Marrakech (Morocco) I now have my favourites: a young man based in one of the souks, between the wool souk and the dyers one. He makes handbags, necklaces, slippers and hats with felt made with wool and sealing it together with the local ‘black soap’ and water. Layer by layer he creates a cloth, which he dyes with natural colours and creates unique pieces. I love his felt bags in bright colours and the ‘bubble necklaces’ which the females in his family embroider with colourful threads. In a nearby square I go for the raffia shopping bags in any size, shape and colour. In the square, as well as tourists, you can find lots of locals doing their shopping. One time I found some nice grass plates as well as the rectangular little shopping baskets that are so popular. The old woman in charge spoke Berber and some accented French; she wore a thick veil over her face and understanding her was a little difficult. But her eyes were very expressive. In a while we had agreed a price we were both happy with. Suddenly a young lad appeared from nowhere, came over and tried to charge me much more than what the lady and I had agreed. Needless to say the lad was verbally chastised both by both of us and we had such a giggle after!!! 16

Don’t be afraid to buy from the single craftsman on a street corner or square. They are small entrepreneurs. The women, especially, supplement their husbands’ wages, and you often see them with their young kids in tow. Try talking to them, ask how and where they make their craft. It will make what you buy all the more valuable for the memories you will have with you for a long time, often it will be even cheaper than if you bought something similar in a shop. If you didn’t have space in your luggage to bring back a souvenir from your holiday, have a look at my website. You can easily find something that will be a perfect present or memory for you. From October we will have a big SALE with lots of special offers, just in time for the Christmas shopping. An open weekend for you to come and browse will happen during the same month (17th and 18th), so look out for it. If you are interested in an invite to the open weekend, send Anna an email and I will let you know details of the event. www.craftsoftheworldonline.com info@craftsoftheworldonline.co.uk

There are around 10 events each year starting in September, offering a varied and interested program of talks and cultural events. The subject of talks varies considerably and includes travel, literature, history and art. The wine tasting events presented by wine experts are usually popular as is the ‘Quiz and galette’ evening at Christmas.

The main requirement for joining the Circle is an interest in the French culture and some knowledge of French as most of the talks and events are conducted in French. Some of the members are foreigners looking for a taste of French culture and an opportunity to practice their language skills but most members are British. There are still a number of original members who have been remained loyal to the society since the beginning.
