LOCAL NEWS

Codicote FC - History in the Making

With the earliest records going back to the 1913/14 season, Codicote Football Club is on the verge of making club history with its promotion to the Spartan South Midlands League later this year. This will be the first time Codicote has been at Step 6 of English football; the club has come a long way from the days when players chased the cows off the pitch. But as the club has gone from strength to strength their have been many sacrifices on the way, the first team now have to play outside the village at Gosling Sports Park in an effort to keep pace with the facility grading that comes hand in hand with the teams successes. While the team performs on the pitch, Codicote’s committee are also being tested as the new league will involve entertaining the opposition officials, players and League officials at half time and after game; just as you would in the Premier League. Volunteers will be needed to operate the turnstile; make announcements on the tannoy system, provide refreshment for spectators and other things that were not necessary in the Herts County League. Jim Bundy told us, “The club has a serious passion to succeed, however there will always be a limit to how far a village side can go without some serious Arabian or Russian money. The Spartan South Midlands could be our limit but why not try and make

our own history rather than living off past glories. We need more volunteers, committee member, coaches and sponsors but ultimately our goal is to return to The John Clements Memorial ground in Codicote. Success has its pit falls as well as it high’s. At present the highs out way the lows 10 to 1, especially when you consider we will be pitting our team against the local heavy weights of Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Hoddesdon and Harpenden next season. In addition entry into the world famous FA Cup for the first time. All these things we’re looking forward to; so a home tie against the Premier League Champions might be some way off but it’s something no other Codicote side could even consider. But having a strong 1st team is not the only success; Rob Frowd has helped build a strong youth team with over 65 boys from 7 to 17 representing the village. The club has formed a strong link with the local Codicote School and year on year new teams are being formed. But to give these young budding stars a future it’s important that we get it right at the top. Already this season youth players have played a major role in the Senior set up with Tom Bundy, James Doherty, Zack Broad, William Rogers and others all Codicote boys at the age of 16 representing the Club’s reserve side. The U17 Cup Finalists, the U11 League Champions and Cup Finalists, and the U18 Mid Floodlit Team Southern Counties Floodlit Champions, are all testament to the youths’ hard work and suggest a great future for the senior sides. “If you can help as a match day volunteer, committee member, running the tannoy system at Gosling or even coaching or managing, please drop us a line. We are also looking for new players at all levels.” Jim Bundy (Chairman), 07711 716 089, codicote.fc@hotmail.co.uk www.codicotefc.co.uk

WELLBEING

How about getting rid of some weight?

D

id you realize that in 2009 almost a quarter of all adults in the UK were obese? At that date we were the fattest nation in Europe and the figure is growing. The cost to our health system will be substantial as all the weight related diseases kick in. And who will be paying for this? Yes, us.We will be paying for it physically with our lethargy and discomfort, with our high blood pressure, our heart disease and cancers. We will be paying for it emotionally with our lack of control, our lack of self esteem and focus, and with our excuses. We will be paying for it in monetary terms, too, as someone has to pay taxes to support the hospital bills. Honestly, do you want to lose weight and feel happier? Well, do it properly. Remember that your body is yours, no one else can do this for you, in fact they really aren’t even interested. You have to do this yourself and if you aren’t prepared to then not only will you stay the same but over time you will actually get bigger and unhealthier. 6

Village Life (Tewin) Issue 11 0612.indd 6

I know this is harsh but it is reality, I have seen it. Over the years I have helped many people to lose weight. Some have had the right attitude and it has left quickly, others gave up, and others perservered. I have learned many things. Some people don’t have the motivation, some don’t have the money, some don’t like exercise, some don’t want to give up their ‘treats’. Many have other issues that contribute to their eating; stress, or relationship issues. These are excuses that have become programmed in! So how can I help you here? Well, I have spent the last 6 months putting together and testing a special series of 5 hypnotherapeutic audios, called ‘the on-track weight loss series’.The idea is to listen to one a day to keep you on track every day, over 5 weeks. You dump the old habits, and then imprint new healthy habits in your mind. The audios are beautifully hypnotic and you just lie back at home and listen. Let my voice soothe you and inspire you to take control, let it action you to eat healthily, think thin,

and motivate you to some sort of gentle exercise. Know you can make the changes necessary; do it, see it and feel it happen. They are reasonably priced, mp3 or cd, and you just listen. You will probably find that they enhance other programmes you may be on.They are a good boost to action. Find them on the website under hypnotherapy recordings or scan the QR code with your smart phone. Go look, listen to the samples there and find the very special deal for June. However, in some cases the fatty tissue is so pronounced that the air is blocked and every so often the breathing stops. This is called sleep apnea and should be discussed straight away with your Doctor. www.marilyntuck.co.uk Knebworth phone 07962 811907

Hat-trick of awards for Austin’s Staff at Austin’s Funeral Directors are celebrating once again after winning three prestigious business awards...

T

he family firm, which has eight branches in Hertfordshire and owns and runs Harwood Park Crematorium and Memorial Gardens in Stevenage, picked up the Excellence in Customer Service award, Medium to Large Business of theYear award and the prestigious overall Business of theYear award at the Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards. Organised by the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry the awards are designed “to celebrate success and achievement and boost business confidence in Hertfordshire” and attracted a huge number of entries. Over 300 people attended the gala presentation evening which was held at the Porsche Centre in Hatfield. Claire Austin, the tenth generation of her family to run Austin’s said: “I was absolutely thrilled to win these awards. Customer service is our number one priority so to have our hard work recognised officially is great. To then go on and win the other two awards, including overall Business of theYear, is amazing. All three are testament to the hard work and commitment of every single member of staff at Austin’s and I’m incredibly proud of their achievements.” 8

Village Life (Tewin) Issue 11 0612.indd 8

Presenting the Business of theYear award to Claire, who was also a finalist in the Entrepreneur of theYear category, the judges commented: “In an outstanding field, our winner tonight demonstrated all the qualities one would wish to see in a successful company. Over a 10 year period it has increased turnover on a consistent basis, delivering impressive growth in its profits. It has achieved this by delivering upon a clear and imaginative growth strategy which has been driven by its management and supported by its staff. Austin’s Funeral Service is not only outstanding within its own sector but is an exemplar for all business.” Claire and her team are no strangers to awards; in November the company won Most Successful Medium Business category at the Hertfordshire Business Awards and in October Austin’s won the Service Excellence category at the East of England Business Champions Awards. Earlier this year Claire travelled to Mexico to pick up the international NextGen Professional of theYear Award in recognition of her achievements as head of the 300 year old firm.

BUSINESS FOCUS

SOLAR SYSTEMS (Herts) Ltd INSTALLERS OF SOLAR PV IN HERTFORDSHIRE

This month we met up with Emma Barratt from Solar Systems (Herts) Ltd to understand more about Solar Energy and how they can help you become greener and save money.

S

olar energy is an alternative energy source that involves harnessing the radiant light energy emitted by the sun and converting it into electrical current. By installing a solar system, anything running off electricity during daylight hours can be powered with the energy generated - kitchen appliances,TV’s, computers, lighting and heating etc.. A Solar System is comprised of a number of elements; PV(Photovoltaic) panels are typically installed on the roof of a building. Daylight hits the Photovoltaic cells in the panels and is converted in to electricity. (The panels need light to operate but do not depend on the sun being out which is a common misconception). An inverter converts the DC (direct current) produced by the panels into AC (alternating current) for use in the home or business. Isolators ensure the system can be turned off safely and when the power has been used, it will automatically switch over to your normal electricity supply. A generation meter shows how much electricity the system has produced. 10

Village Life (Tewin) Issue 11 0612.indd 10

The average system will generate more than enough power to cover 50% of a home’s electricity usage, dramatically reducing utility bills. This saving can be enhanced by running kitchen appliances and heating up the home during daylight hours when the panels are at work. Any excess power is exported automatically into the National Grid and a feed in tariff allows you to earn a fixed income for every unit of electricity you generate. The rates are inflation linked, tax free and currently 21p per kWh (kilowatt hour) provided your house is rated ‘D’ or above under the government’s Energy Performance Certificate scheme (EPC). Often installation of solar panels will increase the rating of your property to level D even if it previously fell below this standard. Please note, any tariff is dependent on your system being fitted by an MCS accredited solar installer. Once considered extremely expensive to build and install, solar energy systems are now much more affordable and a viable option for homeowners and business owners alike. Solar panels can increase the value of a property by at least 4% and can be installed on almost any type of house without planning permission unless the property is a listing building or in a conservation area (in which case you should speak to your local authority, however panels can also be installed on outbuildings or on a frame on the ground). In the current climate it is better to have your money in solar panels than in the bank with a 7-10% return on investment. The savings you make along with the revenue from the feed in tariff will pay off your investment in 6 to 10 years (depending on usage). Based in Welwyn Garden City, Solar Systems (Herts) Ltd is a family run business that specialises in the installation of Solar panels, offering a one stop shop from the initial survey to the installation. They have no tie in with any suppliers and can therefore offer a tailor made installation to both residential and commercial clients. With a team of highly skilled and qualified engineers, they provide a first class service at competitive prices. Emma told us, “Installing a solar system is a relatively simple process, following a free initial survey, we will provide a no obligation quote, if the client decides to go ahead, we will go through the paperwork and obtain an EPC (Energy Performance

BUSINESS FOCUS

Certificate). We will then put up scaffolding and liaise directly with the energy provider, the install takes place and it is then signed off by an electrician. An MCS certificate is provided which then allows you to get the feed in tariff. The install takes a maximum of 2 days on a domestic property and the whole process takes around 2 weeks. As agents for Utility Warehouse, clients can benefit from an additional 2p for 3 years on top of the feed in tariffs and also save on their other utilities. We can also offer finance options through our partnership with First Union, making it viable for first time buyers or young families who are looking to save money, raise the value of their properties and be environmentally friendly. Solar Systems are also great for businesses, we have installed solar panels on the roof of our own offices and they provide most of the power we use. I am happy for people to visit our office to see the solar panels in action. It is a really easy process and once the system is in place all the clients will need to do is provide their energy supplier a meter reading once a quarter. It gives you a nice feeling knowing you are doing your bit for the planet while saving money at the same time!”

Solar systems is proud to be a member of WWFUK’s Business Club – a community of enterprises who are supporting WWF-UK’s urgent work. For every completed installation, they will adopt a polar bear. Clients will receive an adoption pack (including a cuddly toy bear) ,an adoption certificate and selection of magazines 3 times a year and a fact book.

Solar Systems are currently offering a free Samsung 40” Flatscreen TV for the first 5 orders placed in June, which can be installed by their parent company GMI Aerials – www.gmiaerials.co.uk Quote VLT1 when you call.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

Local Businesses thriving in a recession “I’ve gone from working on my own to working with a group where all the members support each other. Where else can you get free advice from a lawyer, marketing expert or range of trades? It also provides me with a great supply chain from all the different

D

businesses and I get to meet my suppliers every week!” Steve Watts, Joiner

espite the doom and gloom of the recession with many businesses struggling to survive, there is a set of local businesses who are actually thriving! These businesses are part of the Arena Breakfast Meeting, a friendly breakfast group that meets every Tuesday morning at the Homestead Court Hotel in Welwyn Garden City. Meetings start at 6.45am and are finished by 9.00am so they do not interfere with the normal business day. They are structured but fun and lively, offering a supportive business environment in which local business people can get together to network, learn valuable new marketing skills and develop strong personal relationships that lead to significant new business opportunities. As only one member from each business category is allowed in the group, by joining you lock out your competitors and will benefit exclusively from the business generated. During the last 12 months, more than £1m worth of business has been passed within the group which means that each seat in the group is worth an average of £35,000 per year. On arrival at Arena, you will get to meet lots of local business people and during the meeting you will have the opportunity to tell people about your business and explain the type of contacts that would be useful for you. In a typical meeting around 45 business opportunities will be passed around, these are word of mouth referrals where a door has been opened by one of the members through recommendation. You just never know who might be in the room or more importantly who they may know. If you are looking to get in to a certain company to promote your goods or services, by asking the group for help, there is a good chance that they will either personally know a contact or be able to get access to someone 14

Village Life (Tewin) Issue 11 0612.indd 14

through the people they know. This is the power of networking, it is like having a group of sales people looking out for opportunities for you to do business. There is a big focus on business training ranging from Networking Skills to Presentation Skills and how to find referrals. Also the group provides fantastic support, the members are predominantly business owners and understand the pressures and challenges faced in running a small business.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

“As a sole trader you can sometimes feel isolated and lose perspective of what’s going on outside of your business. The group allows you to benefit from the experience and knowledge of the members and get an understanding of what is happening in the wider business community.” Nigel Dowse, IT Support “In addition to getting new customers, the group has helped me become much more commercially aware and I now find it much easier to promote my business effectively when I meet people.” Steve Moore, Electrician “I joined the group 3 years ago and it is one of the best business decisions I’ve made. The group is now responsible for generating as much as 30% of my turnover.” David Mason, Financial Advisor Did you know that 98% of businesses rely on referrals to generate new business however only 3% of businesses have a strategy for referrals. The Arena Breakfast Meeting is the most effective way of marketing your business by meeting people face to face to generate referrals. Jo Briley, Membership Co-ordinator for the group told us,” Arena offers the opportunity to have breakfast with like minded business people in a relaxed atmosphere. We

have a great time while generating fantastic business for one another. I joined the group in 2008 when there were just a few members and now it generates a significant amount of my turnover. We currently have 30 members and are looking to grow the group to 40+ in the next few months, this will significantly increase the amount of business that we pass to each other.”

“I joined the group when I started my business and now I couldn’t be without it. I’ve got a great group of friends and contacts and I get business from it every week!” Tracey Scales, Travel Agent The Arena group meets every Tuesday at 6.45am at: Homestead Court Hotel, Homestead Lane, Welwyn Garden City, AL7 4LX If you would like to visit the group and meet like minded local businesses then contact Jo Briley on 0845 313 3353, don’t forget to bring lots of business cards when you visit! PINEHILL HOSPITAL

P

art of the Ramsay Healthcare Group, Pinehill Hospital is a small private hospital offering a range of high quality, modern healthcare which is more affordable that you may think. Having had surgery at Pinehill 10 years ago, Jose was pleased to see that it still has the same warm, homely feeling that he remembered. The hospital is quiet and calm and set in beautiful surroundings. With private rooms, it is not like staying on a busy ward trying to rest with nurses coming and going. For Premium Care patients (those who have health insurance or who are self-paying) Pinehill offers immediate access to healthcare, flexible appointment times, choice of consultant, individual pre operative assessment, a healthy a la cart menu, single en suite room accommodation, a visit from a management representative, priority discharge and individual physiotherapy sessions. The staff are like one big family with great links between departments. There is free parking, wifi, a restaurant and visitors can come at anytime of the day. When it comes to diagnosing the problem, whatever it is , Pinehill will get to the bottom of it.They have a full X Ray department, CT and MRI scanning and all types of tests so they can get to the root cause of the problem quickly. You could have an x-ray and a blood test all in the same day and get results within a day or two.You can also book a Health Screening session where you will spend a full hour with a GP who will check everything and send a comprehensive report directly to you within 3 weeks Pinehill covers almost all aspects of healthcare with many departments including Paediatrics (services for children and teenagers up to the age of 16), a Sleep Disorder Clinic, Orthopaedics (Back and Knee pain with bespoke hips specially made), Ladies Problems, Ears Nose & Throat, Cosmetic Surgery (including Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for men and women and Laser Hair Removal), Urology and Pain Management. Patients can either use their private health insurance or self pay. A Fixed Cost Care Scheme is designed for people who wish to fund their own private healthcare. The scheme covers a range of procedure and includes the medical and nursing care, the surgeons fee, operating costs, drugs or dressings as well as private en suite accommodation and

meals. Should patients need to stay longer than initially thought, there is no additional cost. This provides peace of mind knowing the total cost of a procedure with no surprises. Pinehill runs a series of free information and open evenings. The next event on the 19th June where you can meet one of Pinehill’s top Cosmetic Consultants in a free 10 minute private session. A great opportunity to get all your questions answered! “I was looked after excellently.Everything was explained thoroughly too.Lovely comfortable rooms and very helpful and friendly staff.” “It all went well, from booking in,to Mr McCullough visiting to explain the procedure, the anaesthetic and the nursing care was excellent.” “I commend you all in your efficiency and the attention I received, nothing was too much trouble and made my stay here a pleasure. The entire staff are a credit to the hospital.”

BUSINESS FOCUS

Studio C Architects Ltd

S

tudio C Architects was setup by husband and wife team Sarah and Jay Coughlan in March 2010, with the primary focus of providing architectural services to the growing domestic and residential sector clients. They provide the full range of RIBA architectural design services; commencing with initial consultation and site survey, followed by feasibility study and application for statutory Planning and Building Regulation approvals followed by Tender and Contract administration and on site works and inspections. Sarah and Jay first met at The University of Plymouth when studying for a post graduate Architectural qualification. Collectively, they have a wealth of hands on practical knowledge and experience gained over the years working within the construction Industry helping to design and shape the built environment. Fully qualified in 2000 and having worked in private architectural practice since 1995, Sarah has been fortunate to have been involved in the design, construction and contract administration of many different building types including extensions to private homes, new build designer houses, Doctors surgeries, School and University buildings for teaching and research, and a vast array of building and refurbishment projects for NHS Hospital Trusts and commercial developments. Sarah told us, “We always dreamed of one day forming our own practice and finally took the plunge in 2010. Following the birth of our son in 2007 I did return to work on a part-time basis, but felt that I was compromising both my professional role as architect and my private role as mother and homemaker. To form and establish a business is extremely hard work but for me this has been liberating and rewarding. I have achieved a great workhome life balance, being able to be there for my son when needed but also continuing to work in an industry that I love.We approach and assess each project individually; my job is to listen to the client’s dreams and translate them into good design that exceeds the client’s expectations and aspirations.”

Throughout the process, Studio C pride themselves on providing a very open and personable service, explaining each step of the design and construction process. They will liaise with the Planners whenever possible to achieve a successful outcome and to help alleviate some of the stress that can accompany any construction project. They are not just a drafting service, they are Architects and designers, and as such they endeavour to provide multiple alternative design solutions in response to the client’s brief/requirements. They meet their clients throughout the design process to discuss the options in order to achieve an agreed consolidated design that everyone is happy with – Sarah often refers to these meetings as ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ as Clients may like elements from 3 or 4 different layouts and elevations which when combined form the final design. Studio C recognise that budgets can often be restrictive and will tailor their services accordingly, they can provide full contract administration services but are equally happy to hand the project over to a client to manage the construction process remaining available should queries arise once the project is on site. “Studio C provided me an absolutely first class service from the initial feasibility study, excellent ideas, through the planning and building regulation processes and, most important of all, maintained involvement throughout the building contract liaising with the building contractors on our behalf.” “We would highly recommend using Studio C Architects to anyone who wants a thorough and professional service.” “I contacted studio C Architects to design a pitched roof to replace an existing flat roof. From the initial site visit to completion the service was excellent.”

Pilates party went with a Red Arrows cheer!

To celebrate the Lifestyle Pilates 14th Birthday Party, what could be better than demonstrating a Pilates exercise to the Red Arrows flying overhead and everyone cheering? Well this is exactly what happened, the Deputy Town Mayor of Hatfield, Mick Clark was impressed! After the 14 candles were blown out on the cake, there were many amazing testimonials of just how many benefits there are from doing Pilates, from keeping fit and injury free in your seventies to improving your singing. Opera Singer Neil Simon has found its helped his performance and core stability, he serenaded the clients with red roses. Julie New from Changes Forever said that: “Pilates has changed my life” and teacher Phil Bennett shared his story how we learnt

to walk again and use the left side of his body, following 2 major strokes in 2006. After transforming his fitness with Pilates, he became inspired to teach and recently completed the Paris Marathon, which is amazing. There were great demonstrations from Beverley Densham and clients on both the reformer and matwork. It was really great to teach fantastic Pilates taster sessions with me (Beverley Densham, Lifestyle Pilates Expert) & Phil, Christine carried out the one to one consultations for clients. We raised money for both Homestart Welwyn Hatfield & Jamie Olivers Food Revolution.

Pilates for Golfers – Your game could improve along with your handicap!

Beverley Densham had the pleasure of practising a few ‘golf club’ Pilates warm up moves with Tom Lewis and Welwyn Garden City golfers Ian Whitecombe and Terry Densham who have practised pilates at Lifestyle Pilates for 10 & 14 years. Tom Lewis won the Portugal Masters in October 2011. Ian Whitcombe, a Lifestyle Pilates client says that “Pilates has created miracles in my game and since starting at the Studio 10 years ago, my handicap has dropped from 18 to as low as 11-12, even though I’m getting older.” Ian likes the combination of matwork and reformer work (equipment designed by Joseph Pilates which has springs and pulleys!) which we offer at Lifestyle Pilates and feels that in particular, for the older golfer, Pilates is extremely important for flexibility and injury prevention’. See Beverley’s interview with Ian in full on herYOUtube channel, bevslifestylepilates as well as a demo using Golf Clubs.

Taster sessions for only £10 (inc. a £5 discount), available daytime, evening and Saturdays 12-1pm. New special offer on all Pilates memberships: 1 months membership FREE, if you pay for your first year in advance, available to current clients & new members. Discover North Hertfordshire rambles with a new walks guide Do you have the urge to pull on your boots and walk, but don’t know where to go?

W

ell the North Herts Ramblers Group could have the answer for you. Because they have just created a new publication which brings together 10 walks from around the county. Ranging from five miles to just under seven miles, the rambles can be completed by most in less than half a day. Some of the villages which have been included in the booklet are: Ashwell; Hexton; Knebworth; Kimpton; Ayot St Lawrence; Great Offley; Ickleford; Pirton – to name but a few. But what’s most important is the fact that the walks have been exhaustively checked by local Ramblers who have double-checked the routes and have got lost so you don’t have to. And each walk in the collection is accompanied by a map with a thorough description. The book has been dedicated to the memory of Ken Payne (1918 – 2011), a volunteer rambler who devoted much of his life to ensuring the paths in North Herts remained useable. The booklet costs just £6 (including P & P), and all proceeds will be ploughed back into the Ramblers – a charity which ensures that our local footpaths and open spaces remain accessible for everyone.
