Tried & Tested... This month I venture to

see the newly re-located Whispers – Debby Holmes at the new premises in Steyning – The Barn, for a treatment – HD BROWS! (That’s High Definition to you and me)...

A

s a regular to eyebrow waxing and a slave to the tweezers anything that can keep my unruly brows in shape for more than a millisecond is good in my book, and HD Brows are the current fave with celebrities and us ordinary folk alike!

What actually Are HD Brows? Basically this is a high precision procedure that can transform even the most over or under plucked brow into a finely tuned and perfectly shaped brow, dramatically enhancing facial features. It’s not just about a shape and a tidy up… HD Brows is all about creating the right shape for you. No two people will leave the treatment looking the same. Regardless of age, skin tone or hair colour, I think it’s safe to say that everyone could benefit from this treatment. Particularly those with really dark hair, who perhaps have unruly eyebrows, would really benefit from the threading and sharp, defined brows. Those with lighter hair can achieve that perfect definition that’s been difficult to achieve through a lack of density. The procedure itself is pretty much pain free and really doesn’t take very long. Firstly, the brow is wiped using cleansing cream (which defines the hair line) then a brush is used to bring the brow into shape, next, plucking, waxing and threading (none of which hurt – I promise!) The defining powder is brushed in

(that’s the HD bit) and finally your perfect brows will be set with setting mist. It’s a little bit more special than the usual eyebrow wax, bringing that little bit of glam to what for some (most of us!) is an evil necessity in life! As always it was a treat to see Debby, she is such great fun and delivers a fab treatment! Go and see the team at their new premises in Steyning and find out what treatments are on offer to suit you… Coming Soon… Whispers have two lovely treatments in conjunction with the Sussex Produce Company. A pick me up morning facial, which is revitalising, refreshing, cleansing and toning finishing up with a regular coffee and a slice of cake at the SPC, and a Relaxing afternoon facial, which is cleansing, and hydrating and of course… relaxing! All with a cup of tea and cake included in the price! Also, there are a few tickets left for the very special dinner and raffle which Whispers is hosting at The Sussex Produce Company to celebrate the move to the Barn. You can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine on arrival, a delicious two course dinner, musical entertainment, and raffle and goodie bags for the ladies. (In support of breast cancer research) on Tuesday 9th April 7.30pm. Phone or Email for tickets. Enquiries: 01903 879721 debbyholmes10@hotmail.com.

Yoga inspired activity class

C

hildren attending local Nursery Elan are now offered a new children’s activity called Tatty Bumpkins! The classes are yoga-inspired stories using music, props and exercise that are designed to encourage movement & enhance development. The classes are a mixture of fast and slow paced activities and relaxation, that can help the children to ‘wake themselves up’ or to ‘self-calm’. The blend of activities encourage strength, balance & co-ordination skills, an ideal way for young children to be bendy, giggly, clever and strong. Sounds great!

Changes to your garden waste collection

R

ESIDENTS in the Horsham District will be receiving a leaflet in the next few weeks with more information on how to join the new garden waste collection service. The new opt-in service will replace the current free service and anyone wishing to continue to have their garden waste bin emptied will need to sign up and pay £29 per year. This is the cheapest service offered by any council in West Sussex, working out at less than 60p per week. Customers with larger gardens can also pay to have additional bins emptied, with the cost of emptying each additional bin at their property fixed at £15 per year. The new service was agreed by Horsham District Council in December, with the Council receiving less money from the Government and having to take difficult decisions in finding ways to balance income against the cost of delivering services. The leaflet will provide residents with information on the garden waste collection scheme, as part of an ongoing campaign to promote the scheme, and tell readers how they can sign up. The Leader of the Council, Cllr Ray Dawe, said: “Whilst we acknowledge that the move to a charged service will not be welcomed by all, we believe that it is fairer that only those residents that choose to participate in the scheme should pay for the service.”

Mind & Body Chris Jones Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Sports Performance Mind Coach NLP Master Practioner, MNCH (reg)*

Hypnotherapy & Health

I

n keeping with the Health & beauty theme for this month, I thought that I would write on how hypnotherapy can be used to improve health. (Unfortunately, as of this moment, it cannot help with beauty). In the Western world in around the 18th Century, treatment for mind and body issues were devolved into 2 camps; the former being the province of the church and the latter, the province of The Medical profession. In the Eastern world, they have continued to treat the two together and this concept is gaining momentum over here. Science has confirmed just how strongly the mind and body interact; therefore it should be of little surprise that it is possible to influence health using the power of the mind. Several ways this can be achieved are outlined below. In a controlled experiment, two groups were tasked with improving their muscle mass. The first group actually did exercise and increased, on average muscle mass by 36% over a fixed period. The second group simply imagined doing the same exercises and still improved their muscle mass, by about 16%. Using similar techniques, healing processes can be

speeded up. My ex-tutor and mentor had a dislocated shoulder and was told that it would be several weeks before it was healed. After 10 days, he was doing normal activities again. Pain control can be extremely effective, not for everyone, but for those who are susceptible to deep levels of hypnosis. An operation was carried out live on TV. The patient did not have any medication and was under hypnosis. Immediately after the operation, he was questioned about his ‘ordeal’ and how he felt. He simply said that he felt emotional and had not experienced any pain. You may have seen another program on TV where Darren Brown set up a convincing dummy drugs company and gave placebo drugs and treatment to, amongst others, people with skin conditions, such as psoriasis. The belief in the treatment was so strong, because of its credibility, that the group all experienced significant improvements in their conditions; such is the power of the mind and its effect on the body. Many of my clients arrive with a psychological issue(s), but also experience physical effects; especially aches and pains, but also insomnia and

other conditions. In most cases, these related problems are resolved when the emotional issue(s) are dealt with. One area, which I have to agree is contentious is the field of illness and disease. I attended a weekend seminar some years ago, called ‘mind over cancer’. It was attended by therapists, doctors and cancer sufferers past and present. Example after example was given of where mind techniques had been used by sufferers who subsequently had either spontaneous remission, or a prolonged life. However, IBS (Irritiable Bowel Syndrome) is treatable using hypnotic techniques and is even prescribed by N.I.C.E. ( National Institute for Clinical Excellence). This field will, I believe, become an area of great focus in the future. If you would like to discuss any of the above topics in more detail, please contact me.

GLAM Beauty in Shoreham By Ginette Stevens

W

ith the harsh winter weather and warm central heating taking its toll, my skin was feeling rather grey and unloved. It was time to go in search of a pick me up, ready for the much anticipated warmer spring weather. Tucked away at the top of Shoreham’s high street is the beauty treatment salon called Glam. I had wandered past many times without even realising it was there. How remiss of me! With all its wonderful beauty treatments and products on offer, it’s somewhere I should have visited many years ago. I was therefore delighted when Kate Michaela, Glam’s founder and owner suggested I pop in for some TLC. From the many treatments on offer, I chose a Skin Analysis

followed by a Microdermabrasion. This was a bit of yin and yang for me as I know through the years I have been very cruel to my skin through exposure to the sun and so wanted to see how much damage I had caused, but also knew that the microdermabrasion would be a treat for my face. Glam has been open in Shoreham for nearly seven years. When Kate moved here from London, she felt that it was time for a complete career change. Having raised her children, she took time to train in several different aspects of beauty treatments and, having successfully completed these, found her present location and set up shop. Initially she ran Glam alone, offering more traditional treatments such as manicures, pedicures and waxing. Stacey joined her in 2008 and together they worked to expand the business and offer clients a larger range of treatments and products. They were both keen to stay in touch with the latest treatments on offer and ‘move with the times’, and this is the philosophy that still holds true today at Glam. Arriving for my treatments, I was warmly welcomed by Stacey. She explained how the two sessions would run and led me to the first treatment room where I met Genevieve who would be carrying out my skin analysis. Feeling rather nervous at what Genevieve was to discover, I duly placed my forehead and chin onto the Visia machine where my photo was taken a couple of times. These images were then displayed on a computer screen. Genevieve explained that they always looked at the right side of the face as this was usually the most damaged (from being exposed to the sun through the driver’s side of a car). Initially things didn’t look so bad – there I was and only a couple of winkles and brown spots to see. But then Genevieve pressed a couple of buttons and things on the screen changed... Genevieve works for the International Institute for AntiAgeing. She visits salons all across the south of england, meeting with people such as myself to help us understand our skin, what damage has been done and, most importantly, what we can do to stop any more damage taking place. She is an extremely knowledgeable lady and really helped me understand what I could do to prevent further damage to my skin, as well as help repair the damage already done. The consultation lasted approximately 45 minutes and was free. www.villageliving.biz | tel: 0785 2231512

With lots of useful information both on prevention and cure for my skin by working not just from the outside, but from the inside too, I left Genevieve to join Abbie who was to carry out my facial. She made me feel very comfortable and explained how the microdermabrasion worked and what I should feel. She also asked if there were any particular areas of my face that I would like her to especially concentrate on. Just all of it, I sighed. I was unsure if the treatment would be uncomfortable as it is an intense exfoliation, removing the dead layers of skin from your face and neck using fine crystals. The machine used also stimulates the circulation and blood flow helping produce collagen and elastin. No pain no gain I was always told… Ladies and gents I can assure you, no pain was

felt during the procedure. It was rather like soft sand blowing on your face. There was some lovely mellow jazz playing in the background and I felt totally relaxed. During the treatment Abbie checked that I was ok and afterwards left me to relax with a glass of water. I could easily have fallen asleep! Catching up with Stacey before I left, she was full of enthusiasm about future plans for the salon including the opening of a hair studio in February. I really felt taken care of at Glam. The girls were so friendly and helpful – nothing was too much trouble. My skin felt wonderful after the treatment and I certainly will be trying to hold onto my youth and returning for another treatment in the near future. I would suggest signing up to Glam’s website (www.glambeauty.co.uk) where you can take advantage of reduced priced offers month to month. I’m hoping for a cheeky spray tan as the weather gets warmer!!! Everyone is welcome at Glam: young, old, female, male. The treatments on offer make it available to all.

The Castle Inn Bramber

Reviewed by Tim Wild – writer, reviewer & professional bigmouth. timnwild@gmail.com

Let Sunday Commence...

I

magine you’ve just done one of those big proper walks – the ones you only do at Christmas or when city friends come to stay. Maybe up and around Chanctonbury Ring for the view, or a few miles along the Adur. A frosty Sunday morning, the kids, the dogs, everyone with bit of a hangover. After a few hours, as the freshness and movement starts to slowly become aches in the legs, someone pops the burning question – “Where’s the pub?” It’s in Bramber, as it happens – the Castle Inn. A few hundred yards from the castle ruins, the river and the bridleways of the South Downs way. And a welcome sight it is too. Comfy chairs? Check. Friendly staff? Check. Wholly unperturbed by several pairs of muddy walking boots? Check. But most importantly, that lunch you’ve been dreaming about is almost certainly on the menu. Homemade steak and ale pie with a buttery pastry lid, proper veg and a pile of chips you can eat while the filling cools down. Or two crisped, spiced rounds of belly pork with a fluffy mound of mash and a warming gravy.

There’s chicken livers soused in brandy, warmed and piled on a round of toast, soaking up the juices. Deep-fried brie wedges with cranberry sauce – totally eighties and sort of wrong, on a nutritional level, but you’ve been for a walk, so that balances it out. (By the way, while I remember – here’s something that’s a good test of whether you’re paying for a meal made by someone who actually cares about food. Eat the salad on the side. Even if it’s just a little pile of leaves to make the plate look pretty. If the kitchen cares, it’ll taste good. Fresh, properly dressed, properly chopped. If they don’t, you’ll get a dirty great hunk of raw red onion with a spurt of acidic bottled dressing. The Castle, I’m happy to say, passed with honours. Put a hunk of goat’s cheese on their side salad and you’ve got a meal.) In other words, you’d have to be the worst kid of churl to show up after a www.villageliving.biz | tel: 0785 2231512

hard morning’s hike on the South Downs and not be immediately cheered by the Castle. You can eat at the bar and have a chat with the staff, take a nook at the back with the papers, or – best option – crowd a big gang around one of the tables in the new dining room and get stuck in. The kids, the in-laws, your old pals who are thinking about leaving London – they’ll all get a hearty great dose of Sussex warmth as they nick the chips off your plate and make a show of thinking about a salad before they cave in and get steak and kidney pudding. Then, after a cheeky brandy in the bar, you could even decide to come back for the car later and check yourself into one of the rooms, falling into a deep and full slumber as you dream of the Downs. Cracking.

Spring has most definitely sprung and with that dreadful bitter weather finally behind us, the daffodils shining in all their glory and a bumper weekend of Easter festivities ahead it’s time to roast a glorious rack of lamb and celebrate everything that’s new and fresh about Lincolnshire Life, where I am, but the recipe will have the same result for you wherever you are!

Roast Rack of Lamb

with a Honey, Rosemary, Garlic & Granola crust I recently discovered a wonderful on-line home-delivery company called Farmison who specialise in predominantly British, restaurant quality meats, vegetables and cheeses from artisan producers, many of whom are located in our fine county of Lincolnshire. They sent me this incredible rack of lamb and it is a reminder, after the recent dreadful mass-produced horse-meat scandal, of the quality of the meat we do actually produce here in the UK. You will I’m sure be able to source an equally splendid home-delivery company near to you too! I’ve created a wonderfully crunchy honey, rosemary and garlic crust that has some extra granola for a surprise added bite. The sweetness from the honey and granola compliment the juicy lamb so beautifully and the caramelised vegetables, including some divine baby new potatoes, roasted directly in the tin with the meat, means less mess and more taste… always a good thing in my opinion. Ingredients 1 large rack of lamb (usually 8 cutlets) 1 carrot – chopped into batons 1 fennel bulb – roughly chooped 1 onion – roughly chopped 1 500g bag of baby new potatoes – roughly halved

For the herb crust 3 cloves of garlic – crushed with salt 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary – with leaves stripped from stalks and finely chopped 2 teaspoons whole-grain mustard 2 teaspoons runny Lincolnshire honey 1 tablespoon ground almonds 1 tablespoon granola or muesli 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

If still in the fridge take the lamb out and let it come to room temperature whilst you make the crust. Crush the garlic into a paste with the back of a large knife and some salt, then add this to a bowl with the rest of the crust ingredients and mix well together. Lay the prepared veg into a roasting tin, season with salt and pepper, sprinkle with a little olive oil and lay the rack of lamb, fatside up, on top. Take the crust ingredients and pat them over the fat ensuring it is all covered, then cover the whole dish with foil and pop in the oven on 170C for 30 mins, then take the foil off and increase the heat to 190C for a further 20 minutes or until the crust is golden. I like my lamb very pink but do keep it in for longer with the foil back on if you’re not so keen.

Eat and of course enjoy!
