Here at Village Living we have been getting out and about and meeting people, this month I met Natalie at Clockhouse Flowers in Steyning, a creative and skilled, highly experienced florist to the stars and found out a little bit more on what being a florist involves! Ginette and her family had a great time at the newly updated Adur Outdoor Centre in Shoreham, we have another great recipe from Karen at lavender and lovage which im very much looking forward to making! It was pointed out to me recently that neither of our fabulous recipe providers are *local* no, they are not, but remember you are always able to source all the ingredients for their recipes wherever you wish, local to YOU! I am incredibly proud to present their recipes, they are both very highly commended online bloggers in the UK and both have a huge fanbase, what a treat that they regularly write for VL ! We are also excitedly gearing up for the Steyning Festival in May and will be updating you on events nearer the time, we have allocated a page on our website www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk to keep you posted too! Chocolate Easter Egg & Daisy Cakes This month’s recipe is for these delightful little vanilla Fairy cakes (cup cakes) with a chocolate cream cheese topping and assorted edible decorations, and are just perfect for the Easter Tea Time Table. Who doesn’t love cake and with the Lenten fast over for Easter, these wee cakes will make a welcome appearance for both children and adults alike. Plus, they are very easy to make, so why not turn making them into a fun project, and get the kids into the kitchen to help bake and decorate them with you – it may be messy, but think of all those bowls you can lick out with a wooden spoon afterwards! For the topping, I used Philadelphia with chocolate – a delectable chocolate cream cheese spread which is JUST like eating chocolate cheesecake and tastes divine. I also discovered some fabulous edible “wafer” daisies, which really bring spring to the table. I then had the idea of making little nests with chocolate flakes, before adding some mini chocolate eggs to complete the Easter cake picture… along with a liberal dousing of hundreds and thousands these cakes are as pretty as a picture and are a chocoholic’s dream. I hope you enjoy this month’s recipe, and that you may even attempt to make some of these cakes yourself – have a WONDERFUL Easter and try not to eat any chocolate BEFORE breakfast!
Karen
Makes:
12 small cakes or 1 large cake
Method:
Prep time: 5 minutes
Pre-heat oven to 180C/375F/Gas Mark 6.
Cook time: 20 minutes
Put the flour, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla extract into a mixing bowl and using a hand whisk, whisk for 3 to 5 minutes until light and fluffy. Add the milk until you have a soft batter.
Total time: 25 minutes Ingredients: 150g self raising flour, 150g caster sugar 150g softened butter, unsalted, 3 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 2 to 4 tablespoons milk 160g packet of ‘Cadbury’s Chocolate Philadelphia Cream Cheese’ 2 Cadbury’s Flakes, 36 Cadbury’s Mini Eggs Edible Wafer daisies (1 packet of 12), Hundreds and Thousands (Pastel shades)
Spoon the cake batter into pre-greased paper cake cases, or silicon cake cases – fill to three-quarters full; I used small muffin cases. Put the filled cake cases into a patty or muffin tin so they hold their shape during baking. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your oven, or until the cakes have risen, are firm to the touch and are golden brown. Allow the cakes to cool in the tin for 5 minutes before taking them out and allowing to cool completely on a wire rack. When the cakes are completely cold. decorate them. Spread some of the chocolate cream cheese over each cake, and then arrange some crumbled flake on top to resemble a nest; then place three mini eggs on top, “gluing” them with extra chocolate cream cheese if necessary before sprinkling the hundreds and thousands over the top and adding the wafer daisy. Arrange them on a plate or cake stand and serve as part of the Easter Tea. NB: You can also make on large cake with this recipe: bake in two sandwich tins and sandwich together with chocolate cream cheese before decorating as before for smaller cakes.

Adur Outdoor Activity Centre
by Ginette Stevens
I’d heard on the grapevine that AOAC had recently changed hands and, having only dropped my ankle-biters there at parties in the past, thought that it was a good time to see what was currently on offer and to hear their plans for the future.
A
s the children had both so enjoyed the parties they had been to, it seemed unfair to leave them at home so, with Nick in tow too, we all arrived at the Centre on a dry but rather cold Saturday afternoon. Warmly welcomed by Annie and Nez, I was pleasantly surprised at the range of activities displayed in reception. We had arranged to have a go at the newly decorated indoor climbing wall with Nez, and then we were to join in the ‘drop in’ archery afternoon with Gordon. But there were lots of other activities going on around us. Whilst we got into our harnesses and tightened the straps ready for climbing, I asked Nez about the change of owners and was soon updated with the fact that it wasn’t a change of owners as such – West Sussex County Council had to make the tough decision to cut funding when their budgets were reduced. The Centre wanted to stay open and
so became a self-funded Charity. Prior to this change, the Centre’s main users were disadvantaged children and youths, and those with disabilities and special needs. But now, the Centre is open to everyone, seven days a week. As mentioned, the Centre is a Charity. It is funded by paying customers like you and me, and also by organising fund raising events. For example, they held a very successful duck race along the river Adur last year which they are hoping to make an annual event. Plans are already afoot to hold this year’s race at Easter. Do look out for posters showing the details and how you can get involved… As Cameron scaled the dizzy heights of one of the 66 routes on the climbing wall, I asked Nez about future plans. She was so enthusiastic when explaining these plans to me, I got completely caught up in it and started making suggestions too! The main plans are to make the Centre more family orientated. By this, it wants to offer activities to both children and adults at the same time so that whole families can come and try new sports all at once. They are also focussing one children’s holiday clubs – such as the one for Easter that they are currently advertising. They will be definitely running longer days in the summer for working parents, or for those just wanting a few hours to themselves. And they will keep the cost very competitive. I suggested men or women only climbing sessions or other activities which Nez seemed very keen on. She said they will look into every suggestion – if you want it, they will find a way to get it! It was my turn to try the climbing wall. I hadn’t climbed before, so started on a very easy route. It was really good fun and I could feel my muscles working. Nez said she noticed how toned she became after climbing for several weeks. The wall itself has 22 panels and there are 3 routes up every panel. They can have a maximum of 35 people climbing at once. The sessions are always supervised. You can start climbing at age 5, and carry on until 105! If you have a climbing party, the maximum number in the group is 8. This allows 2 to climb at a time, and the others to belay (hold the rope and take the strain of the climber). They

will be accompanied at all times by a qualified instructor. Having all had a couple of climbs, it was time to move to the archery area which is outside, and meet Gordon. Gordon has been with the Centre over 20 years and is qualified to run all the activities they offer. He also runs Expedition Leader courses which are for teachers and youth workers. It allows them to learn how to lead camping and low level expeditions. It is also aimed at people doing the Duke of Edinburgh award. Knowing we were in such qualified hands boosted our confidence when trying archery. Gordon was excellent at explaining what to do, and we were soon aiming our bows at the various sized targets. I have to say Jessica was the best out of all of us. She had the advantage of having done archery before though with Scouts and on her school activity week. We had joined a drop in session from 1.30 to 3.30 and there were some experienced archers there with some serious kit. I caught up with a couple of them to ask what attracted them to archery. Jess (not my Jess!) explained that it was a healthy way to spend a Saturday afternoon, it was very social and quite competitive – they had mini competitions each week. She had made some good friends through it, and she
also found it mentally calming. She said the focus on her breathing and posture was very grounding. Another guy I spoke to said it was a better way for him to spend £10 than in the pub! Anyone can join this session, but the Centre are starting an under 18s session on a Monday in April from 4.30pm to 6pm. It will run on a half termly basis. If extra sessions are needed, they will aim to provide these. Having been thoroughly beaten by my daughter, it was time to have one last chat with Nez before we left to take a note of some of the other activities on offer. Classes are run not just by the five AOAC permanent staff and 25 casual instructors, but also by independent people using the site. These include street dance, yoga, free flow yoga, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, paddle boarding, raft building, low ropes and orienteering. As I’ve mentioned, the team will look into any suggestions you may have – they are all committed to being the best outdoor centre possible. Good luck for the future AOAC! To find out more about the activities on offer, please visit the website at www.aoac.org.uk, send an email to info@aoac.org.uk, or call one of the friendly reception staff on 01273 462928.

community spirit, yet without a dedicated veterinary practice to call its own! The new surgery will have a fresh and modern look. It will be a fully functional practice with on site laboratory, kennels, theatre, x-ray and dental facilities. It is easily accessible just off the A24 and has ample roadside parking. Matt firmly believes in providing continuity of care to clients and with this in mind there will be the opportunity to develop a relationship with one vet and the practice will be staffed by village based, qualified nurses and experienced receptionists. Arun Veterinary Group are also delighted to announce they have been voted ‘Best UK Vets 2014’ and plan to celebrate this achievement with an awards presentation held at The Red Lion, Ashington on April 9th. RSVP if you would like to attend ashington@arunvetgroup.co.uk.

“13 MARATHONS IN 13 DAYS, WITH MAYBE A LITTLE WALKING, CYCLING AND CRAWLING ALONG THE WAY!” “Inspired by their own families’ battles with Alzheimer’s these three men are aiming to raise aiming to raise £100k for the Alzheimer’s Society, the leading UK care and research charity into dementia by running from London to Scotland in just 13 days”
Who we are During the summer of 2013, Martin Denholm, Mark Munns and Patrick Bartholomew discovered that, apart from enjoying keeping fit, they all shared a common interest – to increase awareness and understanding of dementia. Each of these men has travelled their own journey with their own families in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Martin and Mark have known each other for twenty-five years, however, only recently met Patrick at an indoor boot-camp exercise and fitness class based in Worthing, West Sussex. The men quickly bonded (possibly because they were the only men in the class!) and soon began running together. Both Patrick and Mark were incredibly supportive when Martin’s Father Stan’s Alzheimer’s condition began to worsen and it was from there that the idea of “Run to Remember” was born.
The Event This epic adventure will start on Monday 14th April 2014.
Prior to this date and to get the fund-raising started, Martin, Mark and Patrick will also be taking part in both the Brighton Marathon on Sunday 6th April 2014 and the London Marathon the following week on Sunday 13th April 2014. The final route these men will be covering will be subject to change depending on any road closures, however they have a draft plan set out to run/jog/walk/crawl or even cycle between 27 to 39 miles per day, leaving from London on Monday 14th April 2014 and arriving in Denholm on the Scottish Borders, on Friday 25th April 2014.
The Alzheimer’s Society Charity Is a membership organisation which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia. Many of their 20,000 members have personal experience of dementia, as carer’s, health professionals or people with dementia themselves, and their experiences help to inform their work.

21 • TRIED & TESTED
Tried & Tested... W This month I paid a visit to The Clockhouse Florist in Steyning...
ith The Clock House Florist, you can have the peace of mind knowing that your floristry requirements are in the most professional and reliable of hands. They can arrange and deliver beautiful flowers for any occasion at competitive prices. They also have a wide extensive range of Vintage gifts. Their bespoke arrangements for all occasions are truly original and incredible, go to their website for pictures on some of the work Natalie has created. If you are looking for a flower shop, don’t be tempted to settle for second best presenting a beautifully arranged bouquet of flowers is a wonderful gift, buy one that is guaranteed to last and not wilted and died before you have even presented them! Members of Interflora and with over 18 years of experience in the field, both traditional and modern arrangements can be made with even a small budget you know you will be getting fantastic quality for your money and deliveries can be made locally. I met Natalie gasson the manageress, for Melvyn who has owned the business in Steyning for over twenty years, having previously come from a very creative background in London working in fashion. Natalie has worked in floristry for over fifteen years starting with a Saturday job at the age of 13,and going on to work for some of both Sussex and London’s most prestigious flower names and has arranged flowers to the stars including Elton john, local big names locally in Steyning and Tom Cruise’s house! Natalie showed me basically how to put together a basic but beautiful bunch using, French (extra long tulips / parrot tulips) pussy willow, steel grass, dracaena, new variety of green phlox; she was like a whirlwind of creativity! And the end result was amazing, a true bouquet should be able to balance and stand up unsupported. It really does take time to learn how to master such beauty and not something that I could realistically achieve in a tried & tested session! I discovered it is all about making the ordinary extraordinary, floristry is an art, It takes years of practice, skill, experience and flair to know what goes with what, the techniques on how to work it, takes time to master and it simply is not a case of just shoving a bunch in a vase. Using snake grass and amaryllis standing up with the help of a simple leaf in a plain vase Natalie showed me how to make a very minimal and tall amount of flowers *work* the effect was stunning! One of the shops very lovely regular customers came in for his usual, it was great to see how Natalie knew exactly what the gentleman would want, he regularly buys flowers for his wife and this time he chose my favourite freesias!
Flowers to Clockhouse are imported wholesale as unfortunately the quality of local and English blooms are not to the same standard. This is the only florist in the area to have actual cold store storage giving extra freshness and longevity to the product. Natalie is hoping to bring a spring flower workshop to life in the near future, to include all equipment and flowers with basics being taught such as wetting the oasis and mossing a wreath, taster on the basics for 2-3 hours with no more than 5 people on a Sunday or of an evening and a Wedding open day coming up, details and dates to be confirmed, which will include an event planner, photographer, and caterer and of course hands on advice for your big day so you can cover all areas for your big day in one go. Regarding weddings and special events they encourage all customers to call and speak to a florist who will work with you to select and style have a growing number of tried and tested suppliers who we help promote their businesses as do they help us! Don’t be afraid to give them a call to see if they can help supply some flowers or a raffle prize for your Charity fund raising event!Clockhouse use and recommend the following local businesses: www.ashdownweddingphotography.co.uk www.funkylushevents.co.uk/having an event with a difference? www.brightonbandstandweddings.co.uk/ Go to their face book page for details on what events are upcoming... I was very kindly given the beautiful pink bouquet Natalie had made, and Walking down the high street with my fabulous bunch, I was stopped a couple of times and asked where I go them. It really was a pleasure to meet Natalie and Melvyn and I suggest if you haven’t already, that you pay them a visit soon!

ARE YOU HAVING A LAUGH? The Steyning Festival 24 May - 8 June
Make sure you get to the Steyning Festival this year if you need an injection of frivolity. One thing’s for certain, there will be plenty of fun on offer for both the young and the young at heart.
I
t must be one of the most child-friendly, family-oriented festivals around this summer and that is obvious from day one because the festival launches with a children’s parade extravaganza featuring lots of giant animal characters and an exciting samba band (11am 24 May). On the Bank Holiday Monday the biggest ever family fun picnic on the Memorial Playing Field promises lots of sporty activities, music bands and refreshments, plus wacky races and the famous St Cuthman’s wheelbarrow race! (Contact Rob Billington to enter robert@rpbconsultancy.co.uk). Gruffalo will be in town with author Julia Donaldson to please the tiny tots, following a stream of children’s writers reading from their books, including Gillian McClure, Eleanor Hawkin, Jo Simmons, Adam Stower and Shelia Rance, who is running a creative writing workshop for young people (27 May). A new youth-oriented musical (ages 7+) ‘The Emerald Crown’ from WWF, with its witty verses and catchy tunes, celebrates the amazingness of the Amazon rain forest and its animals, and should be a great hit (7 June - 2 performances. Email admin@steyningfestival.co.uk mail if your child would like to take part.). Young people will be very much the focus, too, for festival events celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Grammar School. You will be able to find out about how pupils had to speak in Latin in days gone by, how the fortunes of the school went up and down and hear stories from pupils past and present in a special theatrical experience commissioned for the festival, called ‘“Carvings, Corridors and Timbres”. (Submit your stories to be part of it all at www.sgs400.co.uk) (24 & 25 May).
Definitely not for children at all, however, is Janet Pennington’s famous scandal walk, spilling the beans about some famous Steyning residents of yesteryear (1 June). There will plenty of laughs, too, for adults at Neil Mullarkey and the Comedy Store Players gig on the opening night and at the Raymond and Mr Timpkins Revue (31 May). Ever wondered if Victoria Wood really did pull a pint in the Bull? Or how big Tom’s sausages really are? Sunny Ormande, who has been playing the “outrageous and raunchy Lilian Bellamy” in Radio 4’s The Archers is coming to Steyning to answer all your questions (1 June). As will Jonathan Dimbleby, whose Radio 4 programme ‘Any Questions’ is broadcast from Steyning for the first time (30 May), though the questions he and the panel will be considering are likely to be of a more serious nature. Still in need of a few giggles and something more juvenile? Try going along to a costume-making workshop designed to help you get togged up for the finale festival event, the 1614 dance at Wiston House. Make a ruff or a peasant’s sackcloth dance outfit! ( Workshops 19 April and 10 May at the Catholic Church Room 10am.) Don’t forget to buy a ticket for the dance too on 8 June!
‘Make friends’ with the Steyning Festival this year and enjoy priority booking for a jam-packed programme. (Early bird booking for Friends kicks off at a special Friends event on 17 April. Contact Jenny Toomey: jenny.toomey@hotmail.co.uk 01903 814167 to join. From £10p.a.
