Race for Life – it’s not too late to sign up!
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is the UK’s largest womenonly fundraising event with over 240 events taking place across the UK from May to September. Women and girls of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes join together to walk, jog or run 5k to raise money to help beat over 200 types of cancer affecting men, women and children. All women are welcome and can take part on their own or as part of a group. If you haven’t taken part in Race for Life before it is a very moving experience and one you will never forget. Race for Life started as one event in 1994 at Battersea Park with 680 participants and in 2012 it is celebrating its 18th birthday. Since it started, an incredible six million women across the UK have raised over £457 million to fund Cancer Research UK’s vital work. And whilst Race for Life is a women only event, organisers need the support of men too. Men can sign up to volunteer at the event and by simply joining the volunteer squad they will be doing their bit too. Cancer Research UK
receives no Government funding for its ground-breaking research. So money raised through Race for Life is crucial to the pioneering work of doctors, nurses and scientists who are fighting cancer on all fronts. There are 9 events in Sussex at the locations listed below and organisers hope to raise an amazing 1.23 million pounds. It really is not too late to take part, for you, for a loved one, for everyone affected by cancer and enter your local 5K Race for Life now at: http://raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org/ You don’t have to run, you can walk at your own pace or set yourself a target to beat, go on your own or in a group, dress up, dress down and have fun!
Dates in Sussex are: Eastbourne – 03/06/2012, Crawley – 20/06/2012, Hastings – 15/07/2012, Worthing – 15/07/2012, Ardingly – 24/06/2012, Brighton – 30/06/2012 Brighton – 01/07/2012 www.villageliving.biz | tel: 0780 6326910

11 • REBECCA’s RECIPE
Recipes by: Rebecca Woodward
Strawberry Cupcakes...
Ingredients for 12 cupcakes • 100g butter • 100g Caster sugar • 100g Self raising flour, sifted • 2 eggs • Half teaspoon vanilla extract
Icing • 150g softened butter • 300g icing sugar, sifted. • 6 strawberries chopped finely • Pink food colouring if required • 12 perfect strawberries to decorate!
Method 1. First line your muffin tin with 12 paper cupcake cases and pre heat the oven to 200c. 2. Beat together the caster sugar and butter either by hand or with and electric whisk until pale and creamy, then add the vanilla extract. 3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, if the mixture looks like its curdling you can add a tablespoon of the flour. 4. Fold in the remaining flour with a large metal spoon until you have a soft smooth mixture. 5. Divide this mixture between the 12 cases and bake in your preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, until pale golden. Allow to cool completely.
For the icing... 6. start by beating the butter on its own until pale and creamy. Then add the sifted icing sugar. 7. If you want to colour the icing add your food colouring one drop at a time until the colour you want is achieved. 8. gently fold in some fresh finely chopped strawberries, try not to break them up too much. 9. spoon the icing into a piping bag either with no nozzle or a large star nozzle attached and pipe swirls onto your cakes.

22 • THE QUEEN’s JUBIlEE
The Queen’s Jubilee Celebrate with the Bramber, Beeding and Small Dole Jubilee Committee! By Ginette Stevens
w
ith the Queen’s Jubilee fast approaching, I was interested to find out what events were being organised in the local community. I also wanted to look behind the scenes at one of the events to understand how it is put together. with several events planned across our towns and villages, it was hard to choose between them, but I was drawn to Bramber, Beeding and small Dole as it was three villages celebrating as one. with advertising having taken place in the local Parish magazine and in the steyning and shoreham Herald, it was easy to contact sean Teatum, one of the main organisers, and arrange to meet up over a cuppa and find out more. sean first got involved when he was asked by Caron Patmore what the Parish Council was doing for the Queens Diamond Jubilee. she was willing to organise a street party for her family and neighbours if there was nothing else in the offing. He approached the local Parish Council to ask if they were organising any events for the Jubilee. They had not made any fixed plans but were willing to support, so sean, who is a member of the Council agreed to step up to the challenge of arranging a party with those famous last words ‘it can’t be that hard can it?’!! sean updated Caron on the feedback from the Parish Council and said ‘it was up to us to make it happen if we wanted a party for the village’. The idea of having a party for a wider audience appealed to Caron and she willingly offered her services in helping sean with the arrangements. First sean contacted Upper Beeding Primary school to ask if they had any celebratory plans. They said that they

were not doing anything specific for the Jubilee as they had their own summer Fete and live Music Evening Party on saturday 23rd June, but they were happy to help out where they could and promote the Party to their pupils and parents. Next sean spoke to Father John at st Peters Church in Beeding who also advised that he had not committed to any plans as yet but was more than willing to come aboard and help. He also said he was very pleased that the community was coming together to arrange a Party for the local children and families. Plans were coming together nicely and it was time to select a date and a venue. The ideal place everyone agreed was Beeding Memorial Playing Fields as there was access to the village Hall and the sports Hall if conditions were damp, toilet facilities and lots of space to set up events and a tea party for the children. Parking was also available and it was in the middle of the three villages involved. Initially sunday 3rd June was discussed, but due to a sporting event already taking place on the green, saturday 2nd June was selected. More people were needed to help organise and support the Party. Barry snell from the Rising sun was only too pleased to get involved and will provide a stage and a bar. Debbie Jones and her son also joined the Committee and were soon helping to suggest designs for the tickets and poster. Additional help is being provided by the village Hall in the form of tables and chairs, and venue if it rains. The Hall is hosting its own Jubilee celebrations on 9th June when Patcham silver Band perform ‘last Night at the Proms’. The

Towers school will be lending additional kit for stage and bar and help is also coming from the Upper Beeding Football and Cricket Clubs, plus wives and husbands of the organisers . Every child is to be given a commemorative mug and Caron spent some time agreeing on a design and ordering these. Meanwhile, sean organised a risk assessment, booked st John’s Ambulance, obtained music and alcohol licences and spoke to the local schools and village Hall re their plans and whether equipment could be borrowed for the day. All these things do not come free and financial support for the Party was received from Beeding Parish Council who paid for the mugs plus more, and Bramber Parish Council who paid for st John’s Ambulance. steyning and shoreham Herald, who although couldn’t help financially, put an article about the event in their paper. This caught the eye of local business woman gina Citroni who is the CEO and owner of Brighton based industrial electronics company Amplicon. she very generously donated £1000 which is being used for prizes for the Talent Competition, and food and soft drinks for the tea party. she was also able to help with the poster design and printing. Other volunteers who have offered their services are Dot Underhill who will be providing kids ‘Toddlebikes’ for use in the multi user games area (MUgA), Michelle stubbs who will be helping on behalf of Bramber Parish Council and providing gold card for the crown making, sue from Beeding Newsagents who will be donating the Jubilee Cup for the Tug of war, Jack Jones who
will be helping the children to make Crowns and Rosemary Brown who will be judging the best Coronation cake competition. Beeding Barbers have donated a ‘wash and cut’, steve Franklin and sons ltd have donated £50, as have Marston Renovations. some of these donations will be used as raffle prizes, with all proceeds going to Help the Heroes – an extremely worthwhile charity. Please do try and donate a prize if you are approached. There was much talk about other plans including the range of stalls expected, the search for a local celebrity who could open the Party, and the ever expanding list of entertainment. As not all things had been finalised on these (there is a month to go to 2nd June as I write this), I can only dangle a carrot (or hog roast…) and say more great things will be taking place. with the
event running from 2pm to 7pm, you can be sure there will be lots to keep you all amused. Events like this do not happen overnight. There are months of planning by enthusiastic and generous local people who deserve a big thank you for all the work they put in to make the day a success. The biggest reward for them is for people like you and me to buy tickets and join in – celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne and have fun! ladies and gents, boys and girls – if you haven’t already got your tickets and entry forms for the Talent Competition and Tug of war, please get in touch with sean and make this an afternoon for us all to remember. volunteers and helpers are also needed so whether you can spare time setting up, helping at the vents itself or tidying away after, please e-mail sean.
Tickets and entry forms are available from Beeding Newsagents, via Sean at teatum@btinternet.com or Caron Patmore on 01903 816331

Thunkshop Shoreham-by-Sea
Thunkshop – the best cakes in town? Delicious freshly made food from Mon – Sat 9.00am – 4.30pm, Ropetackle Foyer, Shoreham. Eat. Drink. Make!
D
o you know what a Thunk is? No? Neither did I. It is apparently (and according to the gorgeous Sarah owner and manager of the Thunkshop Café and mother of three!) – a thought that becomes an actual thing… fact! Sarah, and her family moved to Shoreham after their architecture agency had business in the area and the commute to London bridge was proving too much. The lure of the Sussex coast was inevitable and after some gentle persuasion she convinced the board of directors at Ropetackle that the Thunkshop Café was exactly what the building needed, and I think she was right! Sarah who cleverly balances family life with three young children, with the café, and makes it look easy, elegantly takes it all in her stride and with a request for another batch of sourdough bread and orders to attend to she still found time to sit

down with me for a moment to fill me in on how it all started, and what was coming up! They wanted somewhere that people could go to relax with a coffee or a snack and make something, buying a kit from thunkshop, bringing your own, or joining an organised craft session. It’s an idea I haven’t seen anywhere else. It genuinely works as a concept bringing communities together beautifully. I will be joining the Knit and Natter group on a Friday morning as I’m determined to knit something more than a scarf! The ladies who were there at the time I visited welcomed me with opened arms, promising to help me out with my project, I can’t wait! The menu covers delicious breakfast and lunch options, with tasty French toast and cinnamon sugar, £3.50, thunkshop sourdough with butter and homemade jam, £3.20, bacon sandwiches with mum’s revolutionary

marmalade or ketchup, £3.20, delicious lunch/snack time bites and kids lunches including a smoked mackerel and watercress granary sandwich with horseradish mayonnaise, £3.90, homemade pizzas with carrot and cucumber batons (either focaccia or standard base), £3.90, homemade ice cream, £2.50 or the yummy afogato (ice cream with an espresso), £3.20, Illy coffees – cappuccino, latte Americano, £2.20 and espressos/macchiato, £1.70 or a pot of tea for £1.75. Franksorange zinger (freshly squeezed orange lemon and lime) is £2.50 and a gorgeous array of cakes and biscuits….freshly homemade daily by members of the team, with speciality gluten free options, are available. (Eggs are free range and hand delivered from the Mac farm). All sandwiches are also available as salads for the same price. Speciality herb focaccia is freshly baked on the premises daily but not
available before 12, and all food is freshly made to order. Regular customers come in expectantly to see what the daily specials are, with a tasty soup, hot meal and puddings changing daily. There is a grand team of helping hands including Sarah’s right hand lady Jenny a qualified tailor, who runs the Sewing Skills class. Emma delights our pre-schoolers with story time on a Thursday… and a team of dedicated Saturday staff. With free taster days happening seasonally, giving you a chance to try the new menu and speciality dishes, do have a look next time you are in Shoreham, it is definitely
worth a visit to the Thunkshop! Catering can be provided for up to 20-30 covers for business lunches and events, with volunteer’s dinner to cater for up next. There are so many craft workshops going on there is something for everyone of any age. There is a kind of bagpuss/homemade, comfortable, atmosphere here – you definitely wouldn’t feel uncomfortable just sitting and taking it all in quietly on your own! There are lots of mums that come in and meet up with the little ones, and no one is going to tut if your children chase each other around in a batman suit, it’s just that sort of relaxed and happy place! The staff are charming and helpful, always smiling and buzzing around with an air of capability, nothing is too much trouble. With a packed and varied programme that includes the free knitting club, a Saturday craft table, a grown up craft club, story time, notebook making, cookery school and afterschool craft club, there is certainly a lot going on at the Thunkshop – go and see for yourself. Hypnotherapy for rape & sexual assault
F
ollowing rape or sexual abuse, it is common for victims to try to live life as normal and to cope by blocking out thoughts and feelings. But memories can come back and victims may experience a multitude of effects including the following: panic attacks, sexual problems, flashbacks, startle reactions, sleep issues, dependency, repetitive playback and analysis, change of personality/temperament, OCD behaviour, eating disorders; plus feelings of anger, shame, embarrassment ,anxiety, rejection and being dirty. It is very common for victims to blame them self rather than their attacker. Their internal dialogue often includes questions, such as: “ was I dressed provocatively? should have I been there? should I have resisted more? Did I deserve it? Etc.” If they have no outlet for their anger and continue to self-blame or feel ashamed, this can lead to depression, or self-destructive behaviour such as selfabuse, or risky behaviour. Even many years after the event(s), the scars can
still be evident and can affect how a victim copes with everyday life. Hypnotherapy can be a highly effective tool for dealing with these effects, by changing how the victim‘s mindset in relation to the crimes. This is done in several ways eg. by reducing the emotional responses to the memories involved; changing the victim’s self-image and beliefs; changing destructive behaviours; providing a framework for moving forward. Each case is treated on an individual basis and treatment is tailored accordingly.
victims are often loathed to talk to family and friends about the matter, as they fear criticism and an inability to cope with the issue themselves and provide the help required. Also, it is often someone close to the victim who is the perpetrator. Hypnotherapists are trained to be non-judgemental, understanding and supportive and are, of course, covered by confidentiality rules. If you have been a victim and would like to talk this through, please contact me on one of the numbers below. I understand that it may be embarrassing to talk about such delicate and personal matters, but there is every chance that the result can be a future free from torment.

Japanese Maples
w
ith the warm temperatures we had in early April, and now plenty of rain,we have a wonderful selection of plants flowering at the nursery, just a couple to mention are some beautiful Pittosporum tobira, and, new to Big Plant this year, a fabulous range of camellia’s. There are many varieties to choose from and they are covered in buds and flowers.we have a lovely range of citrus trees – at present in flower. The scent is exquisite! shut your eyes and breathe in deeply, you can imagine yourself in the south of France or Italy! Deliveries from abroad become a weekly occurrence from all the buying trips Bruce has made recently to Italy and spain, and the nursery is looking very lush with all the new plants. Do call in and see for yourselves. we are vERY busy at the nursery, preparing plants for sale and stocking up our display beds. Bruce has been away in Italy and spain buying lots of bamboo, palms and a huge variety of evergreen shrubs for the nursery. we buy direct from the growers and arrange all our own transport, keeping costs down, ensuring we are able to
offer you very high quality plants at the best prices. Something to think about in June… Japanese maples There are more than 1000 different cultivars of Japanese maples, ensuring a huge range of leaf colours, shapes and sizes. The term ‘Japanese maple’ tends to incorporate the species Acer palmatum, Acer japonicum and Acer shirasawanum, each type having very distinct characteristics. Japanese maples are actually very easy to care for as long as you follow a few basic rules (To read more about growing and maintaining a Japanese maple, go to the Big Plant Nursery website (Big Plant Nursery guide to growing Japanese maples) which will give you details such as watering, finding the correct site and soil type. If you find that you are uncertain as to which cultivar to go for, then please contact the nursery and any of our members of staff will be able to help. Another idea if you fancy a real labour of love would be to invest in a citrus plant, come down to the nursery and see what we have in stock, we will

be happy to give you all the information you need to get yourself set up for a citrusy garden addition! Citrus crops are more often associated with the warm climates of California, Florida and Mediterranean countries than the cool British Isles, but thanks to new varieties and cultural techniques, these sun-loving fruits are becoming a regular fixture on our shores. If you can visit us, please do – there is plenty to see, at this time of the year. If you are unable to visit us in person please ask about current stock. we are happy to photograph plants to email you or offer advice. PLEASE NOTE: Mail Order is EXTREMElY busy at present, we have back orders for plants, which are arriving from Europe weekly, these we are sending out as fast as time allows! During this very busy period, our normal 5 day,’from order to delivery’ service has been extended to 8-10 days for some items. Thank you for your understanding. (PlEAsE NOTE.
