The Artisan Bakehouse Turning their backs on successful careers in banking and HR Louise and Les decided on a change of direction 15yrs ago. After working in various parts of France and the United States they then settled on a move to the Poitou Charente region of France, renovated a derelict farmhouse and turned it into a successful hospitality business & AGA cookery school.

A

fter eight fantastic years abroad, born and bred Sussex man Les missed his home county too much and so they returned home to Sussex to start afresh. “The French experience was invaluable” says Louise, as that is where Les learnt his bread making skills and they learned to live a different lifestyle, growing their own fruit and vegetables and using them to cook for their holiday guests and the local villagers too. Louise also worked in a local Salon de Thé where she learned all about tea, and importantly how to serve it properly and enjoy and savour it! “When we returned to England we wanted to find a way to continue that lifestyle and to establish somewhere that showcased local produce and home cooking which is such a part of the French way of life” Louise continued. ‘We’ve always had a passion for food particularly when it is local and of the highest quality. Sussex has an abundance of great food producers, producing high quality delicious products and we couldn’t wait to start using them once we’d found our new business”. Two years ago they found the perfect property where they could create their vision and The Artisan Bakehouse was born! With two beautiful 16th Century Sussex Farmhouse holiday cottages set in 5 acres of pretty secluded gardens and woodland, The Artisan Bakehouse is surrounded by some of the most beautiful unspoilt rolling countryside just on the edge of the South Downs National Park with numerous public footpaths to explore and enjoy – a paradise for walkers & cyclists. The two attached cottages (The Brewhouse & The Milkhouse) are available individually or as a whole. Both properties have been recently renovated and furnished to provide tasteful, luxurious country living. Crisp white linen, fluffy towels & quality hand-made toiletries ensure a relaxing stay. It’s an idyllic retreat. In addition Louise and Les have a delightful Tea barn which opens on a ‘pop up’ basis several times a year for delicious home-made lunches and afternoon teas, fresh hand-made Artisan baked breads and some of the best local foods that Sussex produces including fruit and vegetables from their own cottage garden. You can learn to make bread here too! Artisan bread making days are available using a traditional wood fired oven for adults and children. They are happy to tailor workshops to cater for individual parties, give them a call and have a chat! Course

numbers are usually limited to 6 bakers to ensure a great hands on experience. The Tea barn and Bakehouse is also available for private functions for birthdays, anniversaries, christenings, hen parties & other celebrations. The Artisan Bakehouse is located in Ashurst, West Sussex, on the B2135 just a couple of minutes’ drive from Steyning. It’s a perfect place for a holiday, a weekend break, to learn to make bread or to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea! SPECIAL SUMMER OPENING: The Bakehouse & Tea Barn will be specially opening to the public on the following days: Every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 12-5pm from 3rd June through until 26th June 2014. The wood oven will be burning and we will be serving our freshly baked bread with delicious lunches, scrumptious handmade cakes & scones with a selection of quality loose leaf teas. 1st Beeding and Bramber

Scout Group

by Ginette Stevens

Calling all budding adventurers aged 10&1/2 to 14 – your local Scout group wants you!!

O

n a wonderfully sunny and warm Saturday I disguised myself as a youngster (as above) to join some of the current Scout members on a hike from Bramber Castle to Daylands Farm (the other side of Ashurst). I love nothing better than a walk through our beautiful countryside and was really looking forward to it, and to meeting and chatting to the guys as we rambled our way to Daylands. Meeting in the castle car park, there was that buzz of excitement that starts all new adventures. Not only were the Scouts hiking to Daylands, they were then setting up camp in a wood for the night – with no modern gadgets allowed… With the bigger and heavier overnight stuff securely stored in the car (which would meet us there), we donned our rucksacks and florescent waistcoats, waived goodbye to our smiling families and set off. 1st Beeding and Bramber Scouts has been a part of the local community for over 100 years. Formed in 1910, it was originally an offshoot of Henfield. The scout groups in those days were rapidly expanding and it was not unusual for new groups to be formed when original groups became too large. The aim of scouting is a really simple but worthwhile one. It is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials as individuals. It is to help them become responsible citizens in their local, national and international communities. To achieve this, the method used at scouts is to provide an enjoyable attractive scheme of progressive training based on the Scout Promise and Law, and guided by adult leadership. 1st Beeding and Bramber is currently looked after by Stuart (Skip) and Helen. They have an array of volunteers who help at all groups (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) but admit that as they have reached that ‘certain age’, any help is warmly and gratefully welcomed. All helpers are CRB checked whatever role they do. Roles include leaders, committee members and general helpers. You do not have to have a child in the group to help. It may be that you remember enjoying scouts yourself as a youngster, or perhaps you are doing the Duke of Edinburgh award and can use volunteering at Scouts to put towards your award. Back to our walk. We had covered good ground, with chatting and good humour still evident. Jack was doing an excellent map reading role, with Taylor in charge of

the distance we were covering and Elliot, the official photographer. Lydia, being the oldest girl, was geeing up Jessica and Leyla who tended to see the walk as a slow stroll whilst discussing Hunger Games films and general girly interests… I flitted from group to group and was made welcome and involved with any of the conversations. Bearing in mind the oldest person there (bar me) was Jack at 14&1/2, and the youngest 11, the maturity of the group was amazing. To walk 6 miles through countryside by map reading and general common sense alone was so refreshing to see. They all checked on each other, stopped for drinks when someone wanted to, joked around but were 100% focussed on the job in hand. Shortly after 12, we stopped at the entrance of a wood for lunch. It was a good time with the group all together to find out what they liked about being part of the Scouts group. They all agreed that it was fun. You got to meet new people from different schools and villages, work as a team and learn useful skills. You learnt leadership skills and it was a really social thing to be part of. It had boosted their confidence and self- awareness. When asked what they had enjoyed the most so far, the boys all agreed on the World Scout Camp at Ardingly. There was so much to do there and so many groups gathered together. This happens every four years and is a worldwide event as the name suggests. Other camping events are Frosty Camp (held in Jan/Feb), Backwoods Camp (this one) and Summer Camp. Frosty

Camp is always held at their base at Hillside near Small Dole, but Summer Camp can be held anywhere. Other activities include safety training, map and compass reading, first aid, cookery and knots. There is also the opportunity to do sports such as canoeing and archery. The group takes part in competitions with other groups such as swimming, sports and cookery. Back to the end of our hike and we reached Daylands where we were warmly welcomed by Sam the sheepdog. He stays with the group the whole time I was told and chases away any unwelcomed visitors during the night! Skip and Shaun were already in the woods, making good progress at putting up their hammocks and getting the fire started. The boys and Lydia were all in hammocks, with Jessica and Leyla in a canvas tent. The girls, boys and leaders were all placed at a comfortable distance apart for privacy. But well within shouting distance!

It was good to see the girls and boys mixing together as one team. The boys being older naturally looked after the girls, but perhaps the girls played on this a bit! They helped the girls make their tent, and Lydia to set up her hammock. I did my bit by collecting firewood and making the tea. I was almost sorry not to be staying the night as the excitement from the children was still evident with the thought of their Cowboy Stew and camp fire shinnanigans. But the time had come for me to go. I bet they all slept so well under the stars – at one with nature. How wonderful! The age of joining Scouts is from 10&1/2 – 14 years, Cubs from 8-10&1/2 and Beavers from 6-8 years. Cubs and Beavers meet on Tuesdays in the Gladys Bevan Hall, Beeding. Scouts meet on Thursdays at Hillside Scout Camp, Small Dole. The group is self- financing and subs are £29 per school term for Beavers, and £32 for Cubs and Scouts. You can trial a night for free though. To get in touch with Helen or Skip, please call them on 01903 813050 or 07761 848212, or email Stuart at s.stevens050@btinternet.com

17 • SARA LUCIA BESPOKE PERFUME

Art of Perfume – 1 day Introduction

T

his month I got very lucky and had a wonderful perfume experience with the very fabulous Sara Lucia (Lucia is her middle name in case you were wondering!) Artisan perfumier based in Steyning. Designing and creating exclusive, handmade perfumes for clients to give as special gifts to loved ones, as mementos to guests at special occasions such as birthday parties, weddings, corporate events and balls, or for those who just want to treat themselves to their very own designer fragrance.Using only the finest essential oils and fragrance oils, she develops blends which capture the very essence of the mood that you want to create. Whether that’s fresh and lively, seductive and sensual, heady and exotic, uplifting and euphoric, serene and calm or something else entirely, she can develop the perfect fragrance that’s just right for you. All handmade perfumes are presented in a range of beautiful perfume bottles and can be personalised with attractive labels displaying the name you have chosen for your designer perfume. Sara is an extremely warm and friendly person, she has great interest and knowledge in what she does and is very passionate about making sure people are happy with what she creates for them. A few years ago she decided to learn more about how to actually make perfume so she studied and trained until she had mastered the art. “I was making perfume as a hobby for my friends and family and absolutely loved the pleasure it gave to myself and others. However, many chance remarks from people who kept telling me how much they loved the perfume I was wearing and where could they get some, inspired me to take my hobby to the next level and launch Sara Lucia.” Sara came to visit, bringing with her a basket of perfume and aromatherapy oils, we went through the basket ruling out scents I didn’t like and gathering a collection of those I did, Sara turned the bottles round so I couldn’t base my descision on the name and there were a few surprises, a couple of scents I thought I loved had quite the oppostite effect! It’s so very interesting how each scent makes you feel, transporting you back in time reminding you of people and places, how each scent can have a different effect on your mood and mind set. They can produce physical reactions in our bodies and change our moods. Sara and I had a look through the scents she is launching in the Autumn, which although still in development stages are helpful to give Sara an indication as to what sort of perfume you like, when she is preparing a scent for you. Quite firm in my descisions and matching what Sara had thought for me, she went away armed with the knowledge and came back with the most amazing gift, what a fantastic gift it would make for someone. Sara gives one hundred percent attention to detail, matching the ribbon on the classically shaped bottle (which, and this is a thing with me, fits properly in your hand for ease of spray) with the paper it is nestled in, in its beautifully presented box. To say I was over the moon is an understatement, it was perfect, exactly the scent I would buy, and this one is mine and mine alone! Delightfully packaged,

friends have commented and really like it, and are very excited about the thought of having their own! Get in there quickly, I have a feeling Sara is about to become very busy! As well as the bespoke perfume service, Sara runs a fantastic workshop at the idyllic Cowshed Studios, at Hammes Barn in Washington, – Art of Perfume – 1 day Introduction. Learn the art of perfume making and create your own designer fragrance which is unique to you. What could be better than your very own signature scent which defines you and your personality and which is exclusively yours!Alternatively, develop beautiful perfumes to give as gifts to friends and family or attempt to re-create your favourite commercially bought scent. All the materials you need to make your perfume are included in this workshop. Also included are teas/ coffees and sandwiches for lunch. What a fantastic idea for a hen party, or corporate event! All classes are a maximum of ten people ensuring everyone gets a chance to hear and be heard! The next perfume workshop in on 21 June so get booked in now so as not to miss out! As if all of that wasn’t keeping her busy enough... Coming soon... a new range of mood perfumes which are due to be launched in Autumn 2014. I was lucky enough to have a sniff test, although they are still in the development stage, they look gorgeous and there is a scent for everyone. Regular updates will be posted on Sara’s website. All of Sara’s commissions are priced individually depending on your requirements. Get in touch with her directly for more details. It really was an absolute pleasure to meet Sara, I cannot tell you how much I genuinly LOVE my perfume, I will be asking her to restock my supplies when I run out, or I might book myself on a workshop and do it myself... I have the recipe! If you would like more information about creating a fragrance then please contact Sara on 07854 769792 or email: sara@saralucia.org

COMPETITION!

Win a place on a perfume workshop with Sara Lucia! (winner will be announced in the next issue and place to be arranged with Sara)

TO WIN One of the four perfumes that Sara is launching in the autumn currently named *Allure*, needs another name of its own… the perfume is ‘alluring, attractive, flirty and radiant’, so a name that captures the essence of this is required! Come up with a winning name and email your entry to Katie@village-living-magazine.co.uk with ‘SARA LUCIA’ as your subject heading.

Tried & Tested...

Jenny Rendall Makeup Jenny is a professional freelance hair and makeup artist www.jennyrendallmakeup.co.uk with some fantastic work under her belt; she is also trained in facials and skincare. Very spiritually minded Jenny is Reiki 2 trained and has been doing tarot since she was 18.

A

relatively new resident to Sussex, Jenny is currently based in Storrington. By appointment she can come to you for a treatment or from June you will be able to book in with her at The Bloomsbury Clinic in Steyning, when she will be joining Debby Holmes and her Bloomsbury team. (Check the whispers and jenny’s website for date confirmation) Jenny is also highly qualified in marketing, business development and web design, but her real passion lies in makeup and skincare. Jenny is a keen and practising expert on astrology and birth charts, she is very passionate about living a positive and spiritual life and as mentioned above she is trained in Reiki, astrology, tarot reading and positive life affirmations. She is an incredibly upbeat, happy and intelligent person. We spent a lovely morning together and I felt

refreshed by Jenny’s presence, she reminded me about positive thinking and mind set, being mindful, having gratitude and being thankful for what we have in our lives. Having read tarot since she was eighteen, Jenny knows her stuff, I was very lucky enough for her to give me a reading, which resonated my current situation and gave some very interesting insight for my near future. Jenny is available for tarot readings on a one to one or group basis. Alongside all of this, Jenny gives an incredibly good facial, I have slightly dehydrated skin which was in long need of a decent facial, Jenny uses a local product and gives a very relaxing and moisturising treatment. Jenny is very personable and friendly with a wealth of knowledge in her fields of expertise. She kindly sent me an astrological birth chart which then she matched with my husband’s when she visited which was very interesting! I wish Jenny every success in her work here in Sussex and recommend you get in contact with her soon for a Summer facial!

31 • MIND & BODY

Mind & Body Chris Jones Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Sports Performance Mind Coach NLP Master Practioner, MNCH (reg)*

The Power of the mind...

B

ack in 2011, I wrote an article about the conscious and subconscious mind and how most of what I deal with is where there is conflict between the two. I have refined my views slightly since then. To me, what we call the ‘mind’ is actually what we could have also called the subconscious, in its entirety. That concept we call the ‘conscious mind’ is that simply that area(s) of the mind we choose to put our focus upon. Again, I use the analogy of the desktop in a computer, where many other processes may be going on in the background without us being aware of what they are. You can choose to focus on many areas, such as eating, breathing, walking, or a whole host of other activities that normally are carried out without conscious effort. Many other areas are hidden away in the depths of the mind and cannot be easily accessed. This is where hypnosis can help; especially with memories that have been buried or suppressed. With a little training it is possible for anyone to use self-hypnosis to help solve simple problems.

For example, a couple of days ago, I spent a lot of time looking over and over again, for a missing wallet. I recalled a time several years ago, when my wife, Cathy, had lost her purse with several credit cards inside. Having cancelled the lot, it took several days and a lot of effort to get the replacements (much to my relief!), so I delayed calling it in. Instead, first thing the next morning, I decided to use that lovely state when you are half-awake (trance?) to allow my mind to tell me where the wallet was. Within 30 seconds, I had the answer. You may have heard the term ‘sleeping on a problem’. To me this is the same thing; i.e. giving your

subconscious time to come up with the answer. I have talked, in the past, about the mind-body relationship and how it is possible to use the immense untapped abilities of the mind to achieve extra-ordinary things, from pain management to healing, from performance enhancement to the resolution of emotional issues. I first became interested in this concept when practising martial arts, where I experienced many examples of mind-techniques being used to improve a technique, such as breaking bricks, or increasing power. Studying Hypnotherapy has enabled me to use a wide range of skills to not only help myself, but help others also. I firmly believe that more and more will be discovered about how we can influence our minds and bodies in ways that will improve our lives. If you would like to improve your quality of life, contact me to discuss this further.
