St Mary’s, Bramber S
ituated on Bramber’s quiet High Street, St Mary’s has been part of the history of West Sussex for over 700 years. In that time it has passed through many owners and had various changes made – all of which have made it what it is today. On my visit, current owners Peter Thorogood and Roger Linton were on hand to share some of this history as they showed me around the beautiful house and gardens. Meeting Peter on the lovingly tended front lawns, I had my first full view of St Mary’s. Built in the 12th century by Templar Knights, the current building was thought to have been constructed in 1470 by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester and founder of Magdalen College, Oxford. Since that time it has passed though many hands. One of the long standing inhabitants was Miss Dorothy Ellis who saved St Mary’s from demolition and cared for the house for over 35 years, before being forced to sell the house due to old age and ill health. Before Peter brought the house in 1984, it was briefly owned by Dr Paul Smart who kept it open to the public and also displayed a large collection of butterflies. Sadly, due to economic pressures, Dr Smart and his family were forced to sell up in 1983 and the house remained empty for over a year. Roger soon joined Peter as joint owner, both gentlemen having family histories that go back many years connecting them to the house and the local area. With much determination and help, Peter and Roger have worked tirelessly over the last 30 years to make St Mary’s what it is today. Roger has redesigned many areas of the gardens, some of which were wilderness on his arrival. Peter has spent countless hours researching and archiving documents and recording historical information. With so much of the old house brought back to life, and the gardens re-sculptured, I was really excited to get my first glimpse inside St Mary’s. We entered via the hall which used to be the Pilgrim Inn refectory (1450-1470). In the 16th century, a wall was put in dividing the hall into two rooms. The other room is now a sitting room containing some loved and cherished items of Peter and Roger’s including Peter’s childhood teddy bear! We moved through the downstairs rooms. I was so caught up in the stories of what I was seeing, I haven’t not noted down as much as I should but in all honesty, my words would not do the gentlemen’s stories justice. The knowledge and passion that was evident kept me asking more and more questions and being fascinated by the facts and history given back.

St Mary’s is a family house. Peter and Roger use the rooms on a daily basis and friends and family stay in the rooms I viewed. Limited opening times (May to September) allows restoration to continue uninterrupted. When the house is open, you are welcomed personally and taken on a tour around the house. No system based walk-through here! Of course, Peter and Roger are unable to do all this themselves. They are backed by a strong and devoted team of volunteers called the Friends of St Mary’s. Formed in April 1991, many of the original members still take an active part in helping to look after the house. This could be volunteering on open days, fund raising or helping in the office. The Friends are always looking out for new recruits, so please do contact St Mary’s should you be able to offer some help. Although I cannot go into the marvels of all the rooms (and each one is marvellous), I can say that behind a false wall lies the most beautiful Music Room I think I have ever seen. Peter laughed as I took a sharp intake of breath as I entered. Apparently, this is the normal reaction from people. Peter, who is a well-known composer and accomplished piano player, has re-created a by-gone age atmosphere and poetry, recitals and plays have all been held here as well as concerts. The Music Room is a unique place for a wedding or special event and has doors opening directly onto the gardens for an extra special venue. And into the gardens is where we were heading next. Another surprise for me! I thought that St Mary’s had some pretty gardens that I had spied over the wall when I had ridden past. What I was not aware of was the size and originality of the whole of the grounds. There are 4.5 acres in total. Walking from the formal gardens, you move into another world completely. Behind a 160ft fruit wall you are greeted by a rose garden, a

poetry garden, a new oak tree (from the original tree which fell in the recent high winds), a rural museum and a work in progress woodland walk to name but a few of the delights. There is also a newly furnished tea room (only for the use of people visiting St Mary’s House and Gardens) and small shop. As Peter and I took a rest in the poetry garden, I asked how work was going to continue should he and Roger ever retire. He explained that they had founded the Waynflete Heritage Trust in 1996. St Mary’s has been willed to the Trust together with its family furniture, archives, special collections and historic memorabilia, so that future generations can benefit. Peter and Roger are an inspiration. They have dedicated their later adult lives to restoring St Mary’s. I felt honoured to have met them and been allowed to spend three hours in their company. They are gentlemen through and through and both deserve the MBEs awarded to them in 2006. A special mention also goes to all the Friends of St Marys whose help is invaluable in so many ways. Teachers – this would make a wonderful school trip for your pupils and is something Peter and Roger actively encourage. There is ample parking for coaches and cars alike. Wondering what to get as a gift for a family member or
friend? How about a gift token? Entry is only £8.50 for the House and Gardens, concessions £7.50. For a group booking, please email or call and speak to a member of the team. I came away feeling a sense of awe at this gem which is right on our door step. I also came away with several books (two of which were written by Peter who kindly signed one for me), and a gift token for my father in law’s 70th birthday present – a tour and tea for two which I know he and his wife will thoroughly enjoy.

19 • TRIED & TESTED
Tried & Tested with Leigh Till This month I tried something a bit different, I have been suffering with painful, diagnosed carpal tunnel in my wrists. A friend recommended acupuncture, I had heard that this can be quite painful but actually I found it to be an incredibly relaxing and effective form of treatment. I will be revisiting Leigh for a follow up treatment but in the meantime let me introduce you to him and tell you about my treatment.
B
ased in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, Leigh offers professional Traditional Chinese medical therapies for clients in South East England. He developed his interest in healing and physical therapies whilst training to be a martial arts teacher, a fascination with traditional Chinese medicine was born. He has studied Chinese medical theory both in the UK and China, under many top teachers, Doctors and masters, and worked extensively within this field including at the highly acclaimed Institute of Chinese Medicine, London – where he held clinics for Tui Na therapy and Acupuncture, for members of the public. His love for what he does shows and I found Leigh incredibly interesting and knowledgeable. I could literally have sat for hours asking him about his amazing experiences whilst learning his studies of traditional Chinese medicine. He is a very approachable and friendly therapist who genuinely aims to improve the lives of those he treats, drawing from his own experience, together with the great knowledge taught to him by his teachers, and this shows in his work. Over the years he has developed his unique approach, combining the very best of Eastern and Western mind body therapy. For thousands of years Traditional medicine has been the treasure of Chinese culture, recent popularity in these ancient healing arts has been fuelled by the desire for an alternative health approach. Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the principles of maintaining natural balance within ourselves, when this balance is disrupted then it may have a positive or negative effect on ones well being. Traditional acupuncturists believe that the underlying principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body’s qi, or vital energy, cannot flow freely. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury is among the most common. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi to restore balance and trigger the body’s natural healing response. To obtain a therapeutic response, needles are manipulated until the patient feels a light distending, cramping, warmth, or tingling around the insertion site. Sometimes these sensations are felt to travel along pathways in the body. The sensation typically subsides within seconds, but may be further re-enforced through manual or electrical stimulation of needles.
Leigh went through my health history with me, we looked at the problem area and discussed symptoms, and he checked my pulse and tongue, which give important clues to the patient’s overall health status according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. This information gathered is then used to reach a diagnosis and he worked out the treatment applicable to me. I lay very comfortably on the treatment table and he inserted the needles in the specified areas, incidentally the needles are very different from hypodermic needles, they are twenty times smaller and generally painless. I literally had pretty much no sensation of the acupuncture needle insertion at all. The needles were then manipulated for a few seconds to produce the therapeutic stimulus, and then were left while I lay quietly for about half an hour and practically fell asleep! Leigh also gave me a supplementary Chinese medical massage to help with tension reduction, and this can be very helpful for many things including pain reduction, Recovery from fatigue, Back injury and nerve damage. The treatment is generally around 90 minutes including the consultation. Leigh’s pricing is incredibly reasonable and within budget. Having also trained to degree level in Sports Science and worked in exercise rehabilitation, his continued professional development has involved studies in the U.K, Europe, China and Thailand, including professional training in, T.C.M, & Tui Na, Traditional Chinese Herbal therapy, Advanced Acupuncture, Sports Massage and Rehabilitation, Shiatsu, Thai massage and Patterns of Physical Transformation. He also teaches regular courses Traditional Specialised spinal acupuncture Auricular acupuncture Chinese medical theory and Chinese Herbalism Tui Na, (Chinese massage and Physiotherapy), Qi Gong Tui Na, (Traditional Taoist healing). I highly recommend Leigh and will be revisiting for some more acupuncture and will definitely be looking to join one of the many classes held in his garden oasis of a classroom in his garden. His premises are calm and serene and perfectly situated in Shoreham within easy reach! Please visit his website for more details. www.leightill.co.uk Tel: 07855 677796 Email: info@leightill.co.uk

Big Plant Online... We currently stock a massive new range of fantastic mature Fargesia Bamboos, Olive Trees and Japanese Maples. Come down to Big Plant Nursery and have a look for yourself!
H
aving travelled all over Europe to find quality plants for the nursery the trucks are arriving weekly full of fabulous plants. Much, much more than we can include on our website. We have a huge range of large specimen and screening plants available, something that we are asked for more and more. I’ve found that tweeting photo’s work’s well and is immediate so will do my best to keep the I phone busy. Also if you require images of any plants we can now easily send video clips to make choosing simpler. Just ask and we will do our best to help. This month as we expand our range of plants for sale we are pleased to offer 5 great varieties of Liriope muscari a fabulous flowering groundcover plant that we think fits in well with our kind of plants, please have a look and let us know what you think. We have a huge range of evergreen (and evergrey) plants. They give structure to your garden and can make a great architectural statement. A few examples are: Palms – Trachycarpus,
Butia, Chamaerops andBrahea. Buxus, balls and pyramids. Phormiums and Cordylines,Eriobotrya and Callistemon, and always a favourite here, Bamboo. Big Plant Nursery are specialist growers and importers of hardy exotic plants including hardy exotic and architectural trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. We grow a wide range of bamboos, Japanese maples, Palms and stunning birch trees along with a wide selection of Ginkgo varieties. We are located just 40 miles south of London in West Sussex and only 15 minutes from the coast. Started in early 2000, the nursery has gone from strength to strength, constantly increasing the range of plants year on year, as well as increasing the amount we grow ourselves. We do bring in a selection of specimen plants from abroad but we will always endeavour to buy the plants from the nursery that has grown them, rather than buying through a middleman. All of the imported plants at the nursery have been hand chosen by us, so
Hole Street, Ashington. RH20 3DE. 01903 891466
you can be assured of the quality and provenance of the plants. The staff at the nursery are all passionate about the plants and will be more than willing to give you any help or advice that you may need. Please use the links above to find out more about us. To make it really easy to find us, just go to our website and type in your postcode for directions to the nursery, using the magic of the World Wide Web! As many of you know Olive trees are becoming regular sights in both private and commercial gardens. We have always strived to research and provide the best possible range and quality of plants suitable for growing here in the U.K. Right now at the nursery, we probably have the best selection this side of Tuscany from young trees right up to ancient gnarled specimens.
