INVITE YOU TO CELEBRATE
The Best of Bespoke Under One Roof
We heard about the exciting collaboration between bespoke dressmaker Get Waisted and Abi-K kimono silk accessories on Steyning’s High Street, so we got the scoop about their collaboration launch date when we visited their unique boutique. READ OUR INTERVIEW WITH TONI AND ABI TO FIND OUT WHY BUYING BESPOKE AND SUPPORTING LOCAL INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES MEANS STEYNING CONTINUES TO BE BRIMMING WITH UNIQUE REASONS TO VISIT...
Q. Firstly, tell us what you do, and what makes your business unique? Toni: “I’m an established bespoke dressmaker. My business is Get Waisted. I’ve been on the high street in Steyning for five years, offering design, made to measure, restyling and alterations. If you’re looking to ‘stand out from the crowd’ wearing a beautiful bespoke garment for a special event, or want quality daywear, I can provide a tailored, friendly, affordable service for you. I also stock ready to wear collections in limited editions.” Abi: “I’m the owner and designer at Abi-K. I design luxury handbags and accessories using vintage Japanese kimono obi silk and leather. The ‘obi’ is the formal sash worn around the waist of a kimono, and were once worn by geishas or in formal Japanese ceremonies, ranging from 1920’s upwards. Only a small number of products are made from each silk, and no two are ever the same making each piece truly unique. All my designs are made in England, expertly manufactured by a small workshop in London. Although I still cut the silk myself to determine where the pattern lays, and hand select premium nappa leather. I also offer a bespoke service and can source obis and leather in specific colours.” June 2018 • Village Living
Q. How long have you been trading? Toni: “Get Waisted was established in 2004, and I’ve been on the High Street in Steyning for five years.” Abi: “I set up Abi-K in 2011, selling into independent boutiques and exhibiting at shows. Until joining Toni at Get Waisted in April, I had a unit in neighbouring Cobblestone Walk for just over a year.”
Q: What gave you the idea for your business? Toni: “I have to give credit to my husband for my business name ‘Get Waisted’. As well as dressmaking, I specialise in bespoke corsets, so the play on words with waist inches made my business name a talking point! Since childhood, I always knew I wanted to be a designer. My mother was a dressmaker and milliner. I trained as a tailor on Saville Row at Taylor Coulson for three years, then decided I wanted to specialise in ladieswear, so I retrained as a dressmaker.” Abi: “I trained as a jeweller originally. In 2011 I won a design award with the British Jewellers’ Association for ‘Fashion Cuffs’. I designed a unique wrist cuff

using silk, stainless steel mesh and leather. I originally used off cuts of vintage Japanese kimono obis, then after researching their heritage I discovered they are four metres long, and fell in love with their opulent pattern, colour and history. I immediately saw their potential as clutch bags to match my wrist cuffs, so I started designing luxury handbags. I’ve been expanding the range ever since.”
Q: What are your price ranges?* Toni: “For my bespoke service, pricing is by consultation depending on the style and fabric for your garment. But don’t be intimidated, we have a relaxed, friendly approach and always happy to chat about your requirements in an informal way over a coffee. While pricing is bespoke, examples are: a blouse in cotton from £75, a day dress from £125 and wedding dresses start from £700. I’m always happy to discuss ideas and work within your budget.”
Q: Steyning is a beautiful place to visit, tell us why customers should come to Get Waisted & Abi-K? Toni: “Being a dressmaker, I specialise in bespoke. Whether you’re going to a wedding, or a special event, we want our clients to feel fabulous wearing a garment guaranteed not to be seen in by anyone else. I can source stunning fabrics, and talk through designs to finalise the perfect outfit. Using Abi’s Japanese silk in details on a garment to compliment her clutch bags is a perfect way to collate an outfit, and feel special when wearing it.” Abi: “My handbags and accessories are completely unique with a history and story to tell. They make perfect gifts for that someone who has everything, if you want to give a thoughtful one-off gift, or treat yourself. My handbags team up fantastically with Toni’s collection, so customers can accessorise a bespoke outfit right here under one roof.”
Abi: “Each product is unique, one-off, never to be repeated, ranging from £29 - £195.” *prices are accurate at time of print, and subject to change in the future or at the discretion of Get Waisted & Abi-K.
Q: This collaboration seems like a natural synergy, but how did it come about? Toni: “I discovered Abi’s beautiful kimono silk handbags in her shop in Cobblestone Walk last year. I’m keen to stock unique one-off accessories at Get Waisted, so Abi and I discussed how I could order a selection of handbags and accessories made from a Japanese obi exclusively for Get Waisted. I started selling the bags and purses before Christmas, and that’s how we got chatting about a collaboration.” Abi: “I’m amazed Toni and I hadn’t met before, as we’ve discovered we’ve been at the same fashion events in Brighton over the years, and have cross overs with contacts within our industry. So when we met last year, we naturally sparked conversation and found we shared a passion for amazing fabrics, colour and print. I particularly love Toni’s African block prints in quality cottons and how they translate into her beautiful dress designs. The possibilities for accenting Toni’s bespoke garments with kimono silk to match my bags is really exciting.”
Get Waisted Bespoke & Abi-K is an eclectic unique boutique bursting with quality, colour and style in a relaxed friendly atmosphere. As editors of Village Living, we’re proud to promote independent businesses such as these two creative ladies who have a fantastic vision and offer an exuberant retail experience.

ASHINGTON SCOUTS
Hi, I’m Cerys, I am an Explorer at 1st Ashington Scouts. I have been a Scout for roughly 4 years and have had some amazing experiences during this time. I have been lucky enough to be selected to attend the 24th World Scout Jamboree 2019 in West Virginia. WWW.2019WSJ. Org . The Jamboree is held every four years and in 2019 is being jointly hosted by America, Canada and Mexico. The 1st World Scout Jamboree was held in August 1920 at Kensington Olympia in London and 8,000 scouts from 34 nations attended. In 2019 it will be attended by 40,000 scouts from over 164 countries. The 24th WSJ Unites the worlds young people to promote peace, mutual understanding and respect in a warmly embracing but action packed experience. Personally I’m looking forward to riding the longest combined zip lines in the world, longest canopy course in America, largest man made outdoor climbing facility , top purpose-built mountain bike facility , second largest outdoor skate park , second largest BMX facility, third largest rifle range, archery , white water rafting, kayaking, scuba and so much more all in America. Never say being a scout is boring!! Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience doesn’t it. That’s why I am only too happy to have to fundraise to be able to go.
Six Scouts/Explorers from the Petworth and Pulborough District have been selected and we each have to raise £3,500 . This is partly to fund ourselves but also a big part of this amount is to enable a Scout from a developing country to attend. Without our support they wouldn’t get the opportunity and I am proud to be able to help. As a group we have lots of fundraisers being organised between now and when we leave for America. Bag packing in Tesco and Waitrose, area Cub quiz, helping with local clubs for donations. We will be helping with the parking and running a plant crèche at The Floral Fringe Fair on the 2nd & 3rd June. Our big fundraiser will be a hog roast, live music and auction in October which I will tell you about when the details are finalised. Individually I have been doing coffee mornings and am organising a fun splash session for the cubs in the local area. 1st Ashington Scout/Explorers are going to do a sponsored event to help me (still in the planning stage, and they earn a scout badge for fundraising as well). I’m looking forward to giving a talk to Storrington Rotary Club on my return as a thank you for their generous donation. I also have a fundraising page www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/ceryselveryjamboree2019. If anyone has any fundraising suggestions, ideas or kind donations then please get in touch. Thank You. I will be keeping you up to date with my fundraising, travels and scout adventures.

Kellie!
With Beach Dreams being just a month away I figured that it’s time to do a small article about it in this issue of the Village Living. For those of you don’t know Beach Dreams is a local music festival that happens on the beach green in Shoreham each and every year. It’s a lot of fun for everyone as it’s your chance to dress up and go wild. Especially as the dress up theme for this year is Rockstars and Popstars. There are a range of activities for everyone as well as live music and DJs playing all day. Last year was my first one and the theme was flower power, everyone got dressed up including the dogs with flower collars on. Beach Dreams is happening
from the 13th to the 15th July. It’s a lot of work for everyone but we all have fun. Last year Sold did a pop up pound shop and there was a lady doing massages amongst other things. So many different kinds of stalls and such a variety of activities so there is something for everyone. See you in the next issue.

18 • STEYNING FESTIVAL
STEYNING FESTIVAL 2018! 26th May – 9th June Faces behind the Festival The Steyning Festival, is said to be the biggest of its kind organized and run entirely by volunteers. But who are they and what makes them give their time and effort? 17 of the almost 70 volunteers gathered recently for a team photo. The Chair of the Festival and very much the lynchpin is Christine Aubrey, a retired psychologist with an understanding of what makes people tick. ‘I just didn’t duck quickly enough,’ she says, ‘when they were looking for someone to take on the role. It’s very hard work but the results are worth it.’ The Steyning Festival started in 2007 and since 2010 has been held every other year. One of those involved from the beginning is Sara Bowers. ‘With my husband, Rob, we opened The Steyning Bookshop in a crumbling old house in the High Street 34 years ago.’ Her involvement with that and the local business community kept her busy enough but then she was asked to take on something new. ‘I felt slightly less than enthusiastic at the prospect, but with the driving force of a wonderfully dynamic Steyning arts enthusiast called Ann Poupard and some other very lively and creative Steyning people, a wonderful new tradition was born.’ But it wasn’t long before tragedy struck. ‘Ann had a deep love of the theatre and the festival immediately reflected this with theatre trails, dance workshops, experimental theatre and performance art filling the fortnight. Along with an art trail, music performances and literature events, which welcomed such names as Louis de Bernieres, Patrick Garland and CJ Sansom, we had something wonderful emerging. We were devastated in the Festival’s third year when Ann died suddenly of meningitis.’ Others stepped into the breach and the Festival went on. In charge now of the theatre trails which bear her name is Jeremy Tomlinson, ‘I was recruited to the festival committee by the wonderful Christine Aubrey when I retired to Steyning in 2012. Most of my career was spent teaching English and Drama at Lancing College, where I was also a housemaster and on senior management.’ One of Christine’s sons was in his house and her husband, Tom, was a colleague for many years. Their friendship, like so many friendships, is one of the engines which drives the Festival. ‘I was actively involved in the Theatre Trails and other events in 2014 and 2016 and in 2016 directed Bedroom Farce at the Grammar School.’
One of the newer members of the team is Hayley Cookson, who looks after the big music events and the innovative dance and rap A Breakin’ Convention. She has had more than 20 years’ experience in the music industry, has toured with the likes of Public Enemy and James Brown, and organized music festivals both here and in Croatia. She has seen the festival grow and her praise for it comes easily, ‘It’s a huge credit to Christine and the team that the Steyning Festival has become a very credible arts festival.’ What pleases her particularly is the friendly feel. ‘Steyning is a very creative place. Through the festival I’ve met and worked alongside people, who probably wouldn’t have mixed with otherwise. It’s very intergenerational which is a great thing. When we had Craig Charles perform at the last festival there were whole generations of families on the dance floor, which is such a good thing for the community. The buzz around the town the next day was amazing.’ People were so touched, says Hayley, that the next day the Cooksons had cards and letters through their door. ‘That is what we do it for.’ Those who volunteer give a great deal and create a welcoming and stimulating atmosphere, but they also receive great enjoyment from what they do and that makes the Festival infectious and special. Steyning is clearly a small town that punches well above its weight. ‘I have made a great many new friends through the Festival,’ says Caroline Meeson, ‘and that, together with shared experiences and working as a team I find very attractive indeed.’ Caroline taught for 32 years at Steyning Grammar School, part of it as Head of Art, and that creative skill led her eventually to the Festival where she confesses to being ‘hooked’. She is responsible this year

for the colourful Community Parade which is one of the opening events on the first Saturday. Another creative person and a volunteer from the very first Festival is Mel Wood, who has played a variety of roles in her time but is responsible for marketing. She also produces the local community magazine, Your Steyning. ‘Working with and meeting the most amazing dedicated and diverse people in Steyning is the best part about volunteering for the Festival. I have made some really good friends, who are not necessarily my generation.’ People in their time play many parts, ‘I am a pattern maker by trade,’ says Mel, ‘a skill I have not yet had to call upon for the Festival but you never know!’ A festival of the size and complexity of this one is a massive logistical exercise, both in the planning stage and in the delivery. With over 140 events it requires considerable administrative support, and that comes in the form of Marylyn Rankin and Sue Linfield. Both bring impressive experience to their tasks. ‘I set up my own Virtual PA company,’ says Marylyn, ‘and give secretarial and administrative assistance to companies and individuals’. Sue lives in Worthing, but she knows Steyning well from her many years of working for Wilton Park at Wiston House. ‘In my working life I worked as an administrator organising the logistics of international conferences. I attended a lot of Steyning Festival events in 2016 and enjoyed every one thoroughly. It was very evident to me that there was a huge amount of work involved in bringing the Festival in and thought I would volunteer my time this year. I love Steyning and its community feel.’ Sarah Hooper, spends more time in London than she does as one of the newest residents of Steyning. She is selling advertising space, but she brings a considerable interest in the arts to her task. ‘I have done painting and mixed media, photography, pottery and sculpture, and I play, or used to play, piano, clarinet and flute (I think that’s all!) – and for a period of time I worked as a freelance textile designer. My work was sold in New York, London, Florence, Paris - but I have no experience of organising Festivals!’ Sue Whelan has lived in Steyning since 1981. ‘I attended a few events at the earlier Steyning Festivals, but it wasn’t until 2012 after I retired that I became involved and helped on Front of House. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and met lots of new people. In 2014, I was co-ordinator for fifteen events, which included the broadcast of Radio 4’s Any Questions? with Jonathan Dimbleby, held at Steyning Grammar School to mark the school’s 400th anniversary.’ In 2016 she took over the raffle, a role she repeats this time with the aim of selling 2,000 tickets. Crissy Smith, who is a rally-driving part-time estate agent,
describes herself as a lively Granny. ‘I knew Ann, who was the inspiration behind the Festival, and it is amazing how from little acorns big oaks grow. The Steyning Festival has gone from strength to strength over the years.’ She has twice taken part in the Monte Carlo Rally. She crashed on both occasions but would love to do it all again. Her role in the Festival is more sedate. ‘I am involved with the lovely catering team, which will be my first proper foray into being a helper rather than a participator. I love baking but make things very sticky.’ The caterers are a tight-knit team within a team. Cynny Buckett is in charge. ‘In 2016, I was asked to be catering manager for the Festival which became a huge leap in the dark when ambitious plans evolved to have an all-day cafe in the Big Top with the support of the local Co-op store. Those two weeks were amongst the best and worst of my life. There were many moments of chaos - no power, no water, no gas, no food, flat car battery - and that was just in the first two hours of the fortnight!’ Vanessa Timms, another member of the catering team adds, ‘Last time the decision to have the Big Top was taken quite late in the day and Cynny did a sterling job but it was difficult. Lots of lessons have been learnt and we are a merry band of six to share the load. We’ve drawn up a rota of half day sessions to serve sandwiches, coffee, tea and cake in the pop-up cafe in the subsidiary tent which will also serve as the Bar in the evening. We have coerced our friends and families to make cakes and to help serve. We’ve had excellent support from local suppliers, which encourages us, and I can’t wait for the excitement to begin.’ All should be well this time out because the Big Top is an established feature and has its own water and power supply. But the last word belongs to Sara, in charge of the many literary events, ‘for author groupies like myself and my staff, there is the thrill of the opportunity to meet Frank Gardner, Barbara Trapido, Martin Bell, Peter James, Sophie Hannah, Vince Cable, Prue Leith and many others – how lucky we are!’ She recalls some of the incidents that have marked the Festival down the years, ‘I’ve had enormous fun each time putting together the literature events, with some great memories – watching Julia and Malcolm Donaldson’s first Steyning show, hearing a frail but razor sharp PD James talk inspiringly for 40 minutes without a note in sight, chasing book dealers away from CJ Sansom, trying to get lunch for a children’s author who only ate strawberries, Christine suddenly realising that she might be providing double bed accommodation for an author and the wrong partner, one of our bookshop staff telling a slightly nonplussed author that his books were great to read when breastfeeding – the list goes on.’

Blueberry & Orange Zest
RECIPE • 2127
VICTORIA SPONGE
So this particular bake is a celebration of simple, fresh ingredients. I love those fancy cakes, dripping in ganache with icing so thick you could grout the bathroom with it, layers packed with unusual and sometimes dubious flavours but sometimes a simple vanilla sponge is the only way. A classic victoria sponge cake with a delicate twist of grated orange zest that lifts it up even lighter, served with a stunning homemade raspberry jam and some fresh blueberries… what more could anyone want? A note on method and ingredients: I’m baking using the ‘weigh-the-eggs’ method which I always find delivers a perfect sponge. You weigh the 3 eggs in their shells and then use an equal quantity of butter, sugar and flour. It makes it so easy to work out your ingredients and a great way to teach cake novices how to bake. I find that for a classic victoria sponge, 3 large free-range eggs always works well and I use golden caster sugar as I love the lighter texture is brings to the cake. I’m using my lovely smeg stand mixer but you can easily use a hand-held electric whisk or even a wooden spoon, it just takes slightly longer. I’m creaming the butter and sugar to start as I find you get a lighter cake, I’ve also tried this cake as an all-in-one and it works perfectly well just to beat everything together in a bowl but you’ll find the texture of the cake just slightly denser.
Ingredients Pre-heat your oven to 170C fan and grease and line 2 x 18cm round, loose-bottomed cake tins • 3 large free-range eggs – beaten together lightly •2 40g butter – soft / room temperature
In a large bowl, using a wooden spoon or in the bowl of your stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy – this takes roughly 7 minutes in a stand mixer on medium high and 10 minutes by hand. Add 1/3 of the beaten egg and 1/3 of the flour and beat in using a more gentle power, then add the vanilla and grated orange zest and beat in gently, followed by the remaining flour and egg mix. At this stage I always add a little milk or if I have it, some sour cream works really well – beat this in until the batter is slack and falls off a spoon. Divide evenly between the two cake tins and smooth down the tops with a palette knife. Bake on the same shelf in the oven for 35-45 minutes until golden brown and a skewer or knife inserted comes out clean.
• 240g golden caster sugar • 240g self-raising flour • the finely grated zest of one orange •1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste from Nielsen-Massey
Remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack, then remove from the tins and prepare to finish the cake.
• raspberry jam
I like to put jam on both the top of the bottom layer and the bottom of the top layer and sandwich fresh fruit in between – I’ve used blueberries here but strawberries or raspberries would work equally well.
• 150g fresh blueberries
Eat and of course, enjoy!
• 2 tablespoons sour cream or milk
