By Louise Roddon
In a cosy converted cowshed just outside of Steyning, men and women are pushing their bodies to the limits and laughing their way to sleek physiques. The ages range from late twenties to fiftysomethings, though in this unusual Pilates class, an extremely agile 80-year-old regularly shames the men with her powerful set of press-ups. Not that you’d be able to judge anyone’s true age from the bendy bodies assembled here. At the command of ebullient teacher Keiran Mellikof, we jack-knife our limbs into crab poses, then scale the wall like upside-down Spidermen. Keiran is the inventor of Mellikof Dynamic Pilates – an exercise regime that packs a punch and bears as much similarity to the tiny twitches of a regular Pilates class, as steak does to tofu. ‘Remember, you have nothing to fear, but fear itself – and the Stannah stairlift,’ says this big bear of a man as he adjusts a client’s arm and wraps it around her foot. The stairlift quip is a typically irreverent comment that belies Keiran Mellikof’s deep knowledge of the muscular-skeletal system and its link to the body’s true potential. Keiran has trained first division footballers, professional athletes, countless golfers, ballet dancers, aerialists and Olympic Gold Medallists. His proudest moment was helping an injured man dispense with his wheelchair after months of pain following a motorbike accident, but equally, he feels as much pride at witnessing a 72-year-old doing the splits for the first time in her life. ‘There’s a signature body that I can give to anyone, and results are noticeable within a month, ‘he tells me. ‘Do this class on a regular basis and you get the body of a dancer – strong, elegantly muscular without unsightly bulges, graceful, and with super core strength. Everything working in synchronicity. his ‘goal body’ promise certainly rings true for me. I’ve been attending Keiran’s classes for three years, and in my fifties, feel stronger than at any time in my life. No longer that nagging lower back pain; instead, a firm waist and even a small feminine sixpack which I’ll admit makes me feel unduly smug – and of course it is super handy for reversing out of tight parking spaces. Teaching this method of Pilates – a system that essentially takes elements from Joseph Pilates’ famous routine and adds reps, deep breathing, and deeper pose holds, also embraces martial arts and Ashtanga yoga. His passion is palpable, so it is extraordinary to hear the details of Keiran’s career path – one that bears little resemblance to the traditional route taken by sports trainers. ‘I want to make the hour spent with me the most efficient hour for any client seeking fitness. All that normal Pilates ‘lift your bottom up and down’ is so boring. I aim to make every movement count, and to give a dynamic core conditioning, so that there isn’t a part of your body we haven’t stretched to its limit at the end of the class.’ www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

At Home with...
Tara de la Motte – Interiors / Gardens Columnist and Stylist Interiors columnist and stylist Tara is a firm believer that the place we call ‘home’ should speak of their owners and it should be an expression of who you are.
VL: Tell us about your home and interior style? TdlM: My home is very much a family home – comfortable and functional. It’s quite eclectic, I think “less is more” is no longer applicable. I have painted most of the walls in Farrow & Balls ‘Cornforth White’ I simply love this colour. Overall I tend to stick to faded and muted colours with a few bright accents. ‘Casual elegance’, ‘eclectic’, are words that sum up my style. VL: Where does your inspiration come from? TdlM: I get inspiration from magazines, books and just from being in other people’s houses as well as from travelling. When I’m in London I often pop into the Savoy to look at their wonderful floral arrangements in the foyer, and this always inspires me to create my very own arrangement on a much smaller scale of course! After all it is important to translate inspirations into your space. VL: Where do you shop for interior finds? TdlM: I go to a lot of antique fairs and second hand shops
– these places have everything you can possibly hope to find including linens, chandeliers and crockery as well as ‘objet d’art’. We are very lucky to have so many great interior shops in Sussex, I really love ‘Tina Bucknall’ in Hurstpierpoint and ‘Onske interiors’ for high quality furniture and accessories. VL: What do you suggest people do to transform their homes this year without spending too much? TdlM: If you can’t afford a complete revamp then invest in luxurious cushions and throws. These can transform a room instantly with minimal cost. I love TK MAXX for cushions and throws, they have an amazing selection. VL: Give us a stylists insight into trend styles for the home – spring / summer 2015? TdlM: The world of fashion and the world of interiors are closely related. What we often see on the catwalk in terms of print and colour is mimicked in interiors. This spring it’s all about soft blush shades with pops of more earthy umber tones adding a little punch to our homes.

Situated in Brighton with decades of experience and founded on honesty, integrity and reputation we offer you a comprehensive building team to suit your needs. The Timber Framing Co is a small and passionate company. We love all things natural that have been created by our planet. We pride ourselves on employing traditional methods of carpentry and construction whilst using locally-sourced Devon and Dorset timber.
Our timber frames are all made by hand in our yard using traditional tools and methods. This gives us a unique ability to know each individual element of your structure, from the largest hand planed arched brace to the smallest hand drawn peg that helps hold the structure together. We enjoy working closely together with our clients, architects and other specialists in order to transform your dream concept to a reality, within the agreed budget and time frame.

Total Greek Yoghurt Scones
In search of the perfect scone – part one...
As many of my regular and dear readers will know, every year, our local village of Aby has a summer show... it’s a chance for all us local would-be cooks, gardeners, artists and artisans to show-off our talents... it’s pretty much seen as a fun ‘get-together’ and to be honest it’s quite small-fry compared to some of the village and town shows that these days seem to be more like international events... ... Even so, there is plenty of friendly rivalry and I wont deny there’s been many a time when I’ve wanted to take a heavy pan to the little old lady from the Women’s Institute... with her basket of rule books and tape measure... particularly when it comes to scones... but that’s another story... This year, in preparation, I have decided to try out the many different scone recipes that seem to be out there... there are the classics, HRH Delia has a great one... there are the modern, Nigela has a good method... there are the down-right outlandish... and then there are those special hand-me-down recipes that pass from mother to daughter, friend to friend, with tweaks and changes over the years... I’ll try and get as many in as possible before I choose a favourite for the show in August... so if you have a favourite then please let me know, I’ll give it a whirl over the next coming months... In keeping with the village show rule book the recipe has to be for a fruit scone, so no savoury recipes... we can do that again in the Autumn... Today, because I’ve just had a delivery of fabulous 0% Greek Yoghurt Split Pots from the lovely Total Greek Yoghurt people I’m starting with these light and fluffy strawberry yoghurt scones from Chele at Chocolate Teapot... (well hers were mascarpone which i’ve done a straight swap for yoghurt... but there you go...) ... so as not to be wasteful I’ve also included the strawberry compote from one side of the split pot, you could use 2 teaspoons of strawberry jam. 340g self raising flour – with some extra for dusting, 1 tsp baking powder, pinch of salt, 80g butter, cold and cubed, 2 tbsp soft light brown sugar, 150g Total Greek Yoghurt, 2 teaspoons of strawberry compote or jam 80ml milk – you may use less or more, 1 egg, lightly beaten for glazing. Method Put the flour, baking powder, salt, butter and sugar into a bowl and crumble into breadcrumbs (you can do this very easily in an electric mixer. Add the yoghurt and compote crumble again, go on, get your hands in! Now make a well in the centre and add the milk bit by bit, bringing the mixture together, first with a knife, then your hands until a soft dough is formed. Now working quickly, turn it out onto a floured surface an pat it down to roughly 3cm deep, don’t roll it, and then cut it into rounds... I’ve used a non fluted cutter but you do as you wish! Brush the tops only with beaten egg. Bake on 210 for 12-14 mins or until golden. My thoughts... I’ve got to say this was an excellent recipe and the addition of the yoghurt has made them light and fluffy... plus, the inclusion of the strawberry compote in the mix has given them a heady scent and has made them taste like they already have strawberry jam on them, which is genius if you ask me! Eat and of course, enjoy!

Are you ready to Quit Smoking?
J
anuary is the time that many people make the decision to give up unwanted habits, such as smoking. For most the task becomes too onerous and within days, weeks, the task is abandoned. I have read that some 40% of smokers would actually like to quit, but do not believe that it is an achievable aim; often based on previously unsuccessful attempts. February/March is usually the peak time for people to turn to alternative methods, including hypnotherapy. The first question that I ask prospective clients is “are you actually prepared to give up?” In my experience, those who purport to want to give up, based solely on pressure from relatives, colleagues etc., are the people who do not succeed It is important that the individual is ready and in the right state of mind to quit, because, contrary to public belief, it is possible to reject suggestions made under hypnosis. However, the results can be remarkable. I have had many clients who comment that the transition to not smoking was easy and painless. The reason why Hypnotherapy can be so effective is that it deals with the mind at sub-conscious level, which is where
March 2015 • Village Living
the psychological factors that prevent individuals from quitting exist. During the initial questioning session, various factors are identified, such as why previous methods have failed. The most common reason is stress; usually a very stressful event, during which the individual concerned still sub-consciously believes that a cigarette will calm him down and thereby solve the problem. Hypnosis can be used to change beliefs and attitudes to overcome this. Other factors, such as associations, cravings and habits are discussed and a treatment plan produced, based on each client as an individual Individuals’ motivations and fears can be used in the process, by getting the client to imagine a future either as a smoker, or as a non-smoker and get a taste of what either option could bring in the medium to long term. This becomes a very powerful motivator. Habit patterns also have to be addressed. Take away the average 20 smoking periods per day and you leave 20 gaps. This opens up the possibility of snacking, or creating a feeling of missing something, so measures have to be taken to

create new healthy habits instead of the old. Hypnotherapy needs to treat every aspect of the smoking habit, for it to be effective and permanent. Suggestions are implanted that will anticipate and prevent any potential side-effects; such as weight-gain. For the majority of clients only two sessions are required. Occasionally, during the questioning session, certain factors, such as a very stressful lifestyle, are discussed and I recommend that these things are treated, before dealing with the smoking itself. It is common for clients to never again have to face cravings, or withdrawal symptoms, as the power of suggestion can be used to eliminate them permanently; making the transition from smoking easier than most people would believe possible. Are you ready to quit? If so, give me a call...
