Some of you may remember back to the days when we started in a small hutted classroom in the grounds of the school with just eight children!! – How times change. Although we had planned to close the doors a the end of the summer term with a wonderful celebration and a party for all our past families, things have a habit of not going as one would have planned or wished for and this to us is our

deepest regret along with the fact that we have as a result of circumstances been unable to secure places for all the many children on our waiting list. We would like to thank each and every member of our loyal and dedicated staff both past and present who have been part of the journey and our success. We know from the continued contact we have with many of our families that Spangels will be remembered very fondly. 77 •• BACK BRIGHTON IN TIME FESTIVAL
BRIGHTON FESTIVAL
W
ith central themes at its heart – art and nature, the crossing points between art forms and liberty and freedom of expression, Brighton Festival 2015 is set to spread its wings and soar this year with award-winning author Ali Smith as its Guest Director. The three week celebration of culture plays host to the finest in quality performance, art and debate, with all manner of events taking place across the city and beyond; so whether you fancy some theatre, dance and visual art, or possibly film, literature, circus, outdoor or family-friendly shows, there really is something for everyone. Kicking things off in style and officially launching Brighton Festival is the annual – and hugely popular – Children’s Parade (2 May). With over 80 schools responding to this year’s theme of ‘taking flight’, expect to see everything from gliders to griffins make their way through the city streets, cheered on by thousands of spectators. The opening weekend fun continues as festival outdoor experts Without Walls present six very special free shows – including Stefano Di Renzo’s mesmerising tightrope walking performance Hold On and Gandini Juggling’s jaw-dropping theatrical ball skills in 8 Songs – outside of the city centre in Woodingdean Central Park (3 May) and Saltdean Oval (4 May). Meanwhile, over in Brighton’s Queen’s Park, strange things are afoot! Gobbledegook Theatre have detected a rich seam of music flowing beneath the ground itself and, armed with over-sized listening devices including gramophone horns and traffic cones, they’ll be giving audiences the chance to listen in on these secret sonics at Ear Trumpet (16 & 17 May). There’s
more mischief to be had as theatre company Third Party ask you to step back in time to revisit one of children TV’s most adventurous of cult characters in The Sagas of Noggin the Nog (23 & 24 May); a stage adaptation of Viking proportions! Expect to meet Noggin himself, alongside the great green bird Graculus and the fearsome Ice Dragon – but will he be able to defeat his treacherous uncle Nogbad the Bad? If jaw-dropping acts of physical strength and spine-tingling moments of acrobatic beauty are more your thing, look no further than Circa’s Beyond (2 & 3 May) – whose blending of circus skill with cheeky humour will have you both astounded and entertained at the same time – or The Forgotten / L’Oublié(e) (19 & 20 May); a cutting-edge exploration of large-scale contemporary French circus which features truly stunning aerial work alongside elements of theatre and dance. Amongst the many exciting performances taking place throughout Brighton Festival, there are also a number of opportunities for audiences to get involved themselves. In Gauge (2 – 24 May) explores our relationship with the weather and water by turning Circus Street Market into an interactive, sonically manipulated playground of investigation for all ages complete with a ‘water piano’ and daily weather report, whilst And Now – a group of artists who specialise in large scale outdoor performance – will be calling on the public to take part in Fleeting (24 May); a very special Brighton seafront murmuration at the West Pier and an apt finale to a festival full of surprises. 11 • BACK IN TIME 11 • FUNK THE FAMILY
Funk the Family Saturday 30th May 2015 Hove Park, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex
Funk The Family Festival transform new site Hove Park into a musical wonderland for families.
Following 2014’s debut, sell-out festival, Funk The Family are back with a bigger, better location and fatter line-up. “Testing the waters” by launching at Hove Lagoon in 2014, FTF’s organisers were “utterly chuffed” by the runaway success of their inaugural event. With tickets selling out months in advance, Funk The Family entertained 1000 people for eight hours. 2015 sees the organisers relocate to Brighton and Hove’s beautiful, centrally located Hove Park; allowing thousands more families much more space. Taking place during England’s largest arts festival, Brighton Fringe, Funk The Family’s ethos is simple: high quality music and entertainment for all the family.
“Funk The Family Festival has succeeded in filling a huge gap within an abundant, untapped market,” Funk The Family’s founder and director, Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small enthuses. “There are thousands of adults, like me, that love music, have done the festival circuit, and now have kids. We want to enjoy that festival vibe with our families, but not necessarily go camping with them!” Keeping things funky, the main stage’s line-up this year includes Britain’s Godfather of soul, Omar Lye-Fook (with full band), rising dub/hip hop 12-piece, Nubiyan Twist, high-energy Brighton afrobeat band, Kalakuta Millionaires and Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer (clue’s in the name!). The brilliant Circus Project are back, offering trapeze workshops for the whole family. Inside the Kool Kids Big Top you can watch shows from Circus Pzaz plus acro-balance, tumbling, uni-cycling and lots more. Meanwhile FTF’s Elle J Small takes to the wheels of steal in the Club Tropicana DJ Bar alongside Jazz Room’s Russ Dewbury, King Tarfari Love Soundsystem, Lynda Phoenix, Donna Dee and many more...

17 • THE ARTISAN BAKEHOUSE RECIPE
Hot Cross Buns
Recipe
FROM LES NICHOLSON – THE ARTISAN BAKEHOUSE
Method: Put the flour, salt, sugar, spices, fruit, zest and yeast into a bowl and give a quick mix. In a mixing jug add the milk, eggs, melted butter and water and mix well. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients in the bowl and using a dough scraper or wooden spoon, bring all the ingredients together to form a rough dough incorporating all of the flour mix. Tip the mixture out onto a very lightly floured work surface and knead for 5 -10 minutes until the stickiness gives way to a more cohesive supple dough. Resist the temptation to add more flour. Place your ball of dough into an oiled bowl or container and cover with Clingfilm or a wet tea towel. Leave in a room with an ambient temperature of about 20-23c for at least 1½ hours or until the dough has doubled in size.
Ingredients: 500g Strong white bread flour 10g salt, 75g caster sugar 10g fast active yeast 40g melted unsalted butter 2 medium eggs (beaten) 120ml warm milk (not skimmed) 120ml water at room temperature 150g of sultanas or raisins 80g mixed peel, finely grated zest of 2 oranges 1tsp of ground cinnamon 1tsp of ground mixed spice For the crosses: 75g plain flour and 75ml of water
Turn out the dough and knead for a couple of minutes. Weigh the dough then roll the dough into a sausage shape and divide into 12 equally weighted pieces. Roll each one into a ball, place them fairly close together in neat rows on 1 or 2 baking sheets lined with baking parchment. Cover with lightly oiled Clingfilm and leave for a further 30/45 minutes until doubled in size. In the meantime heat your oven to 220c or 200c fan assisted (Gas mark 7). To make the crosses, combine the flour and water into a paste and put into a piping bag. Use a fairly fine nozzle and immediately before putting in the oven, pipe a cross on each one. It’s easier if your buns are in rows as you can sweep across them all, firstly horizontally and then vertically. Place the trays in your oven and bake for 20 minutes or until they are a golden brown colour. Once the buns are out of the oven, dilute the jam with a little water and brush over the hot buns to glaze. Then place them on a wire cooling rack and resist the temptation to eat them until they’ve cooled (about 30 minutes if you can!!).
For the glaze: 75g of apricot jam and a little water
You’ll never buy shop hot cross buns again, ever!

You’re Back in the Room
A
t the time of writing this article, I had only seen previews of the above game show; shown on Saturday nights on ITV, from mid March. It already appears to have caused a lot of controversy; not least of all within the hypnotherapy profession, because of the potential damage to its image and the perceived threat to so-called vulnerable contestants. Personally, I am fairly relaxed about it all, but can see how people might react to the show. Firstly, like me, there will be those who see the show for what it is, harmless entertainment, assuming that moral and legal requirements regarding hypnosis are followed. Conversely, there will be those that think that hypnosis is fake and that the whole thing is a con and a set-up. What does concern me is those individuals that have a psychological problem that needs attention, but who are shy away from treatment, because of a belief, based on what they see on the shows, that they will not be in control, when in hypnosis. Let me explain a few points. Contestants are auditioned prior to selection for participation in the
show. This is to establish the degree to which each individual is susceptible to suggestion. Approximately 10% of the population are what we call somnambulists, i.e. those prone to deep levels of trance and suggestion, which is what is required for the concept to work. At the other end of the scale, there is about an equal percentage of those who can’t, or won’t, enter trance and/or reject suggestions. Stage hypnotists test for the former and only use participants at this end of the spectrum. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist simply acts as a conduit to facilitate this process. Nobody can be forced to do anything against their will. People do not participate in this kind of stage show, unless they are prepared to make fools of themselves, in front of Jo public and so accept the consequences of their actions. Stage hypnosis is all about entertainment, whereas Hypnotherapy is about helping to sort out psychological issues and improve the quality of life. Professional Hypnotherapists are bound by a code of conduct, by nationally-registered bodies,
such as the National Council for Hypnotherapy, that precludes any behaviour that might embarrass the client. It is important to recognize how similar techniques can be used for different purposes. You might recall an article I wrote some time ago about trance phenomena. One of these is sensory distortion. So I might use it with a client to change the experience of pain, whereas a stage hypnotist might use it to make a contestant think that his trousers are uncomfortably tight. As a prelude to my sessions, I talk this all through with clients and invite them to demonstrate to themselves, when we get to the use of hypnosis, that they are in control at all times. Therapy will not work if trust is not established with the therapist. If you would like more information about this, please contact me for a no-commitment discussion.
