11 • KAREN BURGE

How to feel Happy August is the month of holidays and most of us get away somewhere else even for a short break from home. Why do we do that? That might seem a daft question but what are we expecting from some days spent somewhere else? It’s hopefully a chance to relax, get refreshed, have good times with family or friends, maybe experience a different climate or culture. We have time to really enjoy those things that make us feel alive, whether it’s the tang of the ocean, playing Frisbee, the smell of flowers or watching a sunset. We return home feeling better, but eventually we pack away the experiences and memories with the suntan lotion and get on with our lives until next year. Wouldn’t it be great if we could continue all those good feelings throughout the year? Are there things we can bring home and make part of our lives? One of my clients came to me struggling with the feeling of overwhelm. The only time she slowed down was when she went on holiday to Greece. She loved to sit quietly and watch the amazing sunsets. We talked about making time for herself and now she gets up a little earlier, pours a fresh orange juice, wraps herself up if need be, and sits outside enjoying the stillness of the morning before the rest of the family get up and the days begins. It gives her time to gather her thoughts, appreciate what she has and provides a bit of space in her hectic life. Ten minutes to herself has made a huge change in how she feels. Holidays give us a glimpse of how life can be better, how we can feel more alive. We have thoughts of exploration and bigger horizons. Then when we get home we settle into our old routines and the usual contentment. Do we see what can be great and then settle for good? When we return home feeling all sprightly and refreshed, is this the time to start a cooking class, take up yoga, or join a volunteer group? Anything that pushes us beyond our usual boundaries. Can we grab a little of those life enhancing experiences that we had on our few days away and make them part of our daily living for the rest of the year? We might not be able to give it all up and move to the south of France, but a French class might keep those memories alive. Shaking our hips with the locals was fun and maybe a Zumba class would be just as exhilarating. Swimming with dolphins was an incredible experience and now taking a daily dip in the sea would get your heart pounding too. These days we have so much choice on how we can spend our time. We live in a part of the country where we have wonderful natural resources. We can wander along the coast, cycle by fields and woods, or walk on the Downs. If we prefer culture we have endless events on every day of the week, from comedy to ballet, from folk music to choirs. If we like to hang out with friends there are pubs and riversides, gardens and restaurants, we really are surrounded by everything we could need or desire. Is it a waste of our one precious life to spend fifty weeks on the sofa dreaming of two weeks away? I hope you have a great holiday, wherever you are and whatever you do. Let’s keep that holiday feeling all year round! www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

15 • STEYNING FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL

H

ere we go again – after two highly acclaimed Food & Drink Festivals staged within the Steyning District in 2013 and 2014, the Steyning & District Community Partnership Visitors & Tourism Group are up and running for their third event! Staged from 5th September to 4th October The Festival has received awesome support from the local businesses who have come forward with a range of outstanding special offers, together with some fantastic events including TWO exciting celebrity headliners – 22nd September – an evening with Oz Clarke – famous wine expert, author & broadcaster and 1st October, supper with Sophie Thompson, acclaimed actress and winner of last year’s Celebrity Chef! Our wonderful Farmers’ Market – Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2014/2015 Best Sussex Farmers’ Market winners – will open the Festival on 5th September, with live music, cooking demonstrations and of course, a superb selection of local food & drink stalls. On the 3rd October we will see the return of the Market, this time with the addition of the annual Pumpkin Weigh Competition & pumpkin based recipes being demonstrated. Our 2015 Festival Charity is Age UK Horsham District and during the 4 weeks, 9 different venues in the area will be holding a series of breakfast/lunch/pizza events to raise money for this worthwhile cause. We are also excited to announce our first Beer Festival, which will run for 2 days organised by Adur Brewery & held at the Steyning Cricket Club. To round off the month of activities, a Safari Supper, moving around 4 eateries in Steyning High Street, taking dinner and sampling local produce – held in aid of the Chestnut Tree House. www.steyningdistrictfooddrinkfestival.co.uk to catch up on more of the exciting dates you should be adding to your diary – there are around 55 from which to choose. Prior booking is essential for most of the “eating out” events. The website also give details of all the fantastic offers together with a list of the businesses taking part. As most participants will expect to see your official program before you

take up their offer, it is quite important to get hold of one. They can be found at the postoffice TIC & participating venues. During the final week of the Festival (week commencing 28th September), there will be a Best Food Theme Shop Window competition – prizes being sponsored by the Steyning & District Business Chamber. All shops are being encouraged to participate – not just “foodie” establishments – so for sure there will be some interesting “creations” to come and view and make your decisions, before the official judging, which will take place at 11 a.m. on the 3rd October. Throughout the Festival Period the Hidden Recipe Competition will run – a chance to solve clues in several food outlets within Steyning High Street, and come up with the name of a well known classic dish the “ingredients” are making. It is simple & great fun – and you might even decide to try the dish out at home, once you have all the ingredients revealed! Entry forms will be found in participating venues, or you can download it from www.steyningdistrictfooddrinkfestival.co.uk Under our Harvest Festival banner, other competitions taking place are : Best Own Home Grown Fruit, Best Children’s Fancy Dress(food theme) and a Baking contest – all taking place at the Ashurst Country Fair & Dog Show. There will also be a Best Allotment Competition, which will cover allotments in Steyning & Upper Beeding – this is the first of what we hope will be an annual event. Apart from thanking all the wonderful local businesses for taking part, overwhelming and sincere thanks must go to the sponsors, as without their financial support none of this could have happened. They are: Steyning & District Business Chamber, Steyning & District Community Partnership, Steyning Parish Council and the West Grinstead & District Ploughing and Agricultural Society. Steyning & District very much look forward to welcoming you ALL to their fantastic Food & Drink Festival. It’s a real fun 4 weeks – we enjoy it, and we hope you will too!

The Sussex Produce Company is one of the major players of the Steyning Food & District Food & Drink Festival. Nick Hempleman said “It was back in 2012 that I sat down with The Steyning Partnership to look at how we could promote Steyning more proactively as a destination venue for food and drink. If you look at the wonderful producers, retailers and hospitality venues Steyning and the local area has to offer, you can see we punch well above our weight. I mean how many high streets can boast two butchers, three bakers, a fishmonger, a deli and a greengrocer? Even towns like Horsham don’t have that! Sometimes people think that local shops are just in competition with each other but that’s rubbish – the truth is that if we work together, draw people to the area, provide the best possible service and products that we can, then that makes the area more vibrant and that draws more people in. This is the third year, that eight hard working people have come together to produce The Steyning and district Food & Drink Festival. Their joint experience in many areas of food & drink, restaurants, farmers markets, marketing and promotion is a wonderful culmination of talents. This article would not be complete without mentioning our honorary committee member, Sara Bowers from the Steyning Book Shop. Last year she managed to get Mary Berry along to promote her book at a supper held at The Sussex Produce company and it was a smash sell out! This year she has done it again – tempting Oz Clark and Sophie Thompson along for two great evening events. Ticket sales start from 1st August 2015 www.steyningdistrictfooddrinkfestival.co.uk

The committee are Reina Alston (SDCP-visitor and tourism group), Derek and Vicky Crush (Daylands Farm and Steyning Farmers market) Kate Glover (Kate’s Cook House), Nick Hempleman (Sussex Produce company), Martin Leigh-Pollitt (SDCP – Visitor and tourism group chairman), Les Nicholson ( The Artisan Bake House) and Eddie Woodward (The CobbleStone Tea House).

19 • THE BACK ARTISAN IN TIMEBAKEHOUSE

The Artisan Bakehouse T

he Artisan Bakehouse in Ashurst, offers two picture postcard holiday cottages, a bread making school and also a delightful licenced Teabarn for hosting private lunches or tea parties. Two years ago they opened the Teabarn to the public on a pop up basis for the first time in support of the Steyning & District Food Festival. It was such a success that many locals asked when they would open again. So whilst they are open all year round for private functions and bread making workshops they also now open the Teabarn in a limited way too, which is great news! The Tea Barn and lovely gardens offer delicious home-made lunches, mouth watering handmade cakes and afternoon teas, fresh hand-made Artisan baked breads (which the owner Les gets up very early to make!) and some of the best local foods that Sussex produces including fruit and vegetables from their own cottage garden. The bread making workshops are very informative and lots of fun. All the bread is baked in a traditional wood fired oven so delegates get the chance to use a baker’s peel and bake their own loaves. Course numbers are limited to 6 bakers to ensure a great hands on experience and Les can hold private baking workshops for groups of friends or family by arrangement. It’s a great way to spend a day making focaccias, baguettes and traditional artisan loaves, followed by a delicious two course lunch in the Tea Barn. The Artisan Bakehouse is located in Ashurst, West Sussex, on the B2135 just a couple of minutes’ drive from Steyning. It’s a perfect place for a holiday, a weekend break, to learn to make bread or to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea either in the tea barn or soaking up the sun in the beautifully secluded gardens. It is open all year round for private hire & bread making workshops but has limited special public openings for the Tea barn.

2015 SPECIAL FESTIVAL OPENING The Bakehouse & Tea Barn will be specially opening to the public on the following days: Every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 12-5pm from 8th September until 1st October The wood oven will be burning and they will be serving their freshly baked bread with delicious lunches, scrumptious handmade ice-creams, cakes & scones and a selection of quality loose leaf teas.

During the Festival on the 29th September they will also be part hosting a ‘Tasty Walk’ Walkers can meet at the Fountain pub in Ashurst at midday to enjoy a lunch, followed by a guided walk through the countryside with a stop at The Artisan Bakehouse for delicious Cream Tea before heading back to the Fountain for a well deserved drink approx. 6 – 6.30pm.

NOW TAKING BOOKINGS Pre-booking essential as numbers will be limited!

21 • ANNA’S BOUNCY CASTLES

Anna’s Bouncy Castles! Tell us about Annas bouncy castles and what you offer Annas Bouncy Castles is a friendly, reliable family based bouncy castle hire company. We currently offer a 12 x 14 ft multi coloured bouncy castle ideal for garden parties and hall parties and perfect size for 0-9 year olds. We have recently introduced a free bubble machine hire with every castle hire and it’s going down a storm! How long have you been running and how did the idea of the business come about? We starting hiring out our castle in May 2014 so we are just coming into our second year and business has doubled, our reliable friendly service has served us well and we are receiving a lot of referrals. We originally decided to buy a commercial castle after our sons 3rd birthday, we had no entertainment, an empty hall and 10 over excited children nerves were wearing thin to say the least. Luckily one of our friends had a small garden bouncy castle and it literally saved the day, the kids loved it, the parents enjoyed the peace and so the idea was born to start our own castle hire company with our own unique extra mile friendly service often missing for the industry. Do you have any suggestions for parents planning a party? Organise, organise, organise! Leaving such a special day for your child to the last minute spells potential disaster, whether it’s missing out on hall hire, castle hire or simply leaving making those little triangle sandwiches until the morning of the party you don’t need the stress and your child doesn’t want the disappointment. Know

what you want to do with the party (whether it’s themed) and start planning at least 6 weeks before the day starting with the big stuff like equipment hire, venue hire and invitations and move to the smaller stuff like food, drinks and decorations. Any funny stories you can share about events you have attended?! We always love it when Disney royalty graces our castle and to date we have had Belle from Beauty and the Beast, Elsa from Frozen and Sleeping beauty on our castle at once. Tell us about yourself… We are Anna and Chris Lunn and we have two children Harry 4 and Poppy 19 months. They love our castle as much as we love watching them enjoy it. We have been living in Shoreham for over 6 years and really enjoy servicing our local community and charities. We are looking to expand our business in the coming months with a Disco dome and hope our customers enjoy it just as much as our original multi coloured castle.
