MORWAYS FLOORING • 7
Morways Flooring A family run business in Ashington, meeting specific requirements and flooring an area near you!
M
orways Flooring has been running over 20yrs from West Sussex to East Sussex… Dudley Chandler, owner and flooring expert with 40yrs experience in the flooring trade has seen a lot of changes in flooring over the years, some good others not so good… We pride ourselves on a quality job from start to finish whatever floorcovering being supplied and fitted – from a small w.c to a dance floor, boat or mobile home. There is so much to choose from now in all types of flooring that it’s essential to get the right advice, from subfloor preparation through to the final floorcovering, whether it involves carpet, vinyl, LVT, wood, laminate, or even magnetic flooring. Over the years smooth floorcoverings have become used more and more for easy maintenance in everyday life, commercially and domestically. In certain cases we are called upon to install underfloor heating which can give a stark look, warmth and comfort. In these very fast stressful times we try to take the pressure off our client by installing them with confidence, from the removal of old existing floorcoverings, through to damp proof membrane, primer and screed. Should oak flooring be required we can also install oak skirting and oak doors, as this is another professional requirement frequently requested to give that all important eye catching finish. At our showroom in Ashington village we have a vast range of wool twist pile carpets through to easy clean synthetic pile carpets, traditional rugs to contempory, children’s mats to eco-friendly door mats. You don’t have to spend fortunes to achieve great looking floors, decisions based on price alone frequently turn out to be bad decisions because they don’t take account of product quality, reliability, sustainability and a host of other things...

Oliver Simon Kay
M
eeting Oliver Simon Kay in his shop was a delight. Oliver himself is personable, charming and very very interesting! His shop like a treasure trove of treats, situated in the heart of the high street in West Sussex’s historic town, Steyning is fast becoming a town renowned for its hub of creative types and shops, and here nestled in the middle of the high street is Oliver Simon Kay. A Seasoned muralist, colourist and specialist decorator Oliver left Goldsmiths College in London with a foundation in graphics, signwriting and as a muralist specialist decorator; he then travelled the world, lived in South Africa for ten years painting murals, hand painting wallpaper... painting and decorating wherever they settled. Oliver and his wife Penny, and family, moved back from Cape Town, to Sussex, and have set up shop, here , it is by no means just *a furniture shop*! Find antique, vintage, retro and upcycled furniture and small home decor items or sign up for one of the popular furniture painting workshops. August 2016 • Village Living
With over thirty years’ experience in décor and design, Oliver has seen trends evolve and change and he has a particular affinity with the growing love affair we all have right now for reincarnating that piece of furniture we cannot part with, but no longer love. Oliver can visit and help you visualise a whole new look for your home, take your key items away and breathe a new life into them from his workshop in the highstreet. There really is a feeling of magic and creativity behind the curtain! If you are looking for an individual or unique piece of retro, vintage or antique furniture this is the place to browse. All the furniture has been pre-owned or pre-loved and is reincarnated, upcycled or restored to its former glory before it goes onto the shop floor. Stocking antique, vintage and painted items. Everything is sold as seen and some items will have bumps, scrapes and dents commensurate with their age and history. It’s what makes their furniture extra special and truly Furniture for Life. Each piece of furniture is hand-picked by Oliver himself. Some pieces are for sale in their original

condition and some have been reincarnated with stylish hand painted finishes including French Country, Shabby Chic, and New England to Swedish style and everything else in between. Oliver visits Auctions both to stock and if asked for specific key items. Oliver can source any key item you have thought missing from your world. He offers a bespoke furniture painting service complete with colour consultation and can collect, paint and re-deliver something you already own for a truly professional finish. Or if you fancy upcycling something yourself, why not sign up for one of their Furniture Painting Workshops? Oliver also hosts a multitude of other artists’ work within the store, from gorgeous prints, to handmade pottery, and jewellery, stunning work all from local artists that have approached Oliver and been able to showcase and sell their work from within the store. I won’t name them all here as I really wish to encourage you to visit yourself, and I defy you to leave empty handed! And yes, it is possible to hold the shop for a wedding list! I personally, was utterly
blown away by Oliver’s own hand painted portraits… my very fave being Marilyn Manson… wow. Seriously. Basically Oliver Simon Kay can do it all for you, visualise and create at competitive rates. The shop is stockist for the eco and VOC free paint brand Earthborn, and they also stock the very popular product House Doctor. The incredibly successful Furniture Painting Workshops will continue throughout the summer, please see the website for more details on when time and date wise. Held in the Steyning shop, they will show you how to do a professional job and how to use chalk and clay paints to achieve the best finish, including some really useful tricks of the trade. Please visit the website or give Oliver a call for more details... Look out for the new online shop which will be launched very soon. info@oliversimonkay.co.uk | 01403 815043 www.oliversimonkay.co.uk

This featured trainees with learning disabilities and/or autism plus staff members strutting their stuff and modelling the cream of the crop of our donated clothes.
Due to the quality of clothes people so generously donate to us, labels modelled included Gucci, Dolce & Gabana, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Helmut Lang, All Saints, Karen Millen, Burberry & Louis Vitton to name just a few! A new rail of such desirable yet realistically priced items was installed & will now become a permanent fixture inside. Everyone who modelled loved taking part & it proved to be a great ego boost for the more shy amongst us whilst it was a chance to shine for the more confident as you can see with the photo of the lovely Ellis. All the catwalk shows are on our Facebook with some being filmed & commentated on by our trainees as well. It certainly was a very entertaining, enjoyable & rewarding 3 weeks being a big hit with participants & audience alike. We were overwhelmed by the positive response to the shows & became quite the talk of the town!

What are our labels? If you think of a hospital maternity unit and all the babies lying in their plastic cots, do you think of the labels they may come to wear? Visiting a newborn you might say “he has the look of Aunt Annie” or “does he have my nose?”. We don’t look at a baby and say “he’s an academic” or “she’s a shy one”. So how in the space of a few years do we have labels thrust upon us? Gaining a good school report one term we’re told we’re smart, but a bad spelling test can mark us as stupid. Doing Michael Jackson impressions as an eight year old can label us as “a born entertainer” for years. Struggling with the complexities of long division can soon turn into ”not very good at maths”. We come to believe them. Then as we grow older we find that we are pretty good good at amusing people, and certainly not good at maths. Is this true? Or is it a label we’ve been given and taken on as indisputable truth? Try this exercise. Every half hour yawn and tell yourself that you’re tired. I guarantee that by the end of the day you’ll feel exhausted and will be planning an early night! Why? Because if we tell ourselves that we’re feeling a certain way, or that we behave in a particular fashion, we will believe it, just as sure as if we had black hair or long legs. Some people live with these labels all their life and it takes courage to start peeling back the layers of who you really are and uncovering the real you hidden within. But once you can start shedding those beliefs, ideas and labels it’s the most freeing thing imaginable. New possibilities emerge, new doors open and a whole new world opens up. One of my clients had always been labeled as clever, ambitious, academic and successful. And she was. She’s been studious at school, done well and gone straight into a corporate career. She lived the label but slowly realized she loathed the corporate life more as time went on. But she felt stuck, because this was had always been expected of her and she couldn’t see an alternative. When we stripped these labels away, she found a new confidence in herself and we explored what really excited her. She’s now managing an equestrian centre and gets to ride her horse every day. She’s in heaven! It’s her new wonderful life and as far away from an office block as you can imagine. Once you admit you’re not a “stay at home bird”, you can plan the trip you always secretly desired. Now you’re not “the academic shy one”, you can explore what you really enjoy; maybe you’ll take up Samba classes or join a choir! What would you do if you stopped being the person you’d been told you were? When you discover who you really are, you can change anything and everything. You’re now free to explore what it is you want and who knows who might emerge? I hope you have a wonderful Summer and start getting rid of the labels! www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

CherryBrandy Sponge Cake with chocolate ganache & cherry brandy cream... After all my sugar-free and clean baking recently I really need to dip into something a little bit naughty and the cherries are absolutely stunning at the moment, sweet and sharp and fat and juicy and so dark they bleed the most gloriously gory blood red and stain everything. You do’t really need the cherry brandy in this but i’ve used just a drop and just a drop lifts the whole cherry taste to somewhere rather special and if you’re going to eat this much butter and sugar then why not make it extra special. What I love most about this cake is that it looks so wonderful but really it’s such a basic layer cake with some nice ingredients in the sponge mix to add a little flair to the cherry taste. If I made it again i’d spread a little cherry jam on both layers before adding the cream to add a little more moisture to the whole thing... but other than that it was pretty near perfect.
For the cake 250g sugar, 250g butter, 3 large free-range eggs, 200g Homepride self-raising flour, 50g ground almonds, the finely grated zest of one orange, 1 tablespoon cherry brandy or kirsch For the filling 400ml double cream, 1 tablespoon cherry brandy or kirsch, a large punnet of cherries – halves and pitted – reserve 8 whole with stalks for the top For the cherry brandy ganache 100ml double cream, 100g dark chocolate, 2 tablespoons cherry brandy or kirsch Pre-heat the oven to 170C and great and line 2 20cm loose-bottomed cake tins and then dust the inside edges with ground almonds. Measure out the flour and ground almonds, mix together and set aside In a large bowl or a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until beautifully light and creamy, then add 1 egg and beat in followed by a third of the flour mix, then the next egg, beat in and another third of the flour mix, then add the orange zest and cherry brandy followed by the final egg and remaining flour and beat together until you have a soft dropping batter mix (a little drop of milk will help slacken if it’s too thick. Divide evenly between the two cake tins and bake on the middle shelf for 20 mins or until golden and risen and a skewer inserted comes out clean – set aside to cool completely. Make the ganache by heating the cream and cherry brandy in a pan then once it’s pipping hot but not boiling take it off the heat and add the chocolate. Stir until it has melted then set aside Beat the cream until thick and then fold in the cherry brandy. Assemble the cake by spreading some cherry jam onto the top of the first layer, followed by the cream, place the cut cherries on top, then spread a little jam on the underside of the top layer and carefully place it on top. Spread the thickening ganache onto the top of the cake – don’t be afraid to let a little dribble down the sides – then add the whole cherries with stalks on top. Eat and of course, enjoy!

engine that powered the original typhoon plane, ending up on the south coast where he began worked for CVA in Hollingbury, Brighton. After the war he gathered together some of the best jig & fixture designers under one roof. They worked for the likes of Vauxhall, Ford, Jaguar, Mirlees blackstone, Eaton Transmission and Rolls Royce. The tool room was opened to add manufacturing to the design office – design and manufacture now under one roof. The Basex tooling systems were launched, a range of horizontal and vertical indexing units, airlift tables trunnion units handles & drill stops. As CNC machines became cheaper these units were rarely needed so the company had to rely on making tools fixtures and components for other companies. This brings us to where we are today; using a good mixture of old and new techniques with modern CNC/manual machines, we help other local engineers turn their ideas into reality.
