Therapy – No Different From Getting Your Car Serviced Really!! Sometimes you can’t see the woods for the trees – you know the sun is shining out there, but you feel as though you’re living in a bubble, completely removed from everyday reality, and the warmth of the sun just can’t quite penetrate the bubble. You may smile and go through all the right motions, but it doesn’t feel quite real (been there).
T
here may be the odd occasion, or two, where you’d like to run for the hills and leave it all behind (yep been there as well); parenthood, the school run, juggling work and family time with general every day domestics, let alone trying to maintain a relationship with your spouse or partner. I’m tired just thinking about it!! The majority of us go to the dentist, we get our cars serviced and MOT’d annually and go to the doctors when we need to. We may even go to the gym, osteopath or physiotherapists fairly regularly. What’s so different about going to see someone to talk to, someone impartial to offload all our daily “stuff” to? Someone who is there solely for us? As The One Show said on Tuesday 4th March 2016, just talking to someone can make all the difference…. Mental health problems account for 1 in 5 visits to GP surgeries. Knowing there is someone approachable you can offload to, knowing you’re not alone is so important. Stress in any form, changes so many things within our bodies, let alone our minds. It’s a brave person to acknowledge they need help. So I ask again…. what makes going to see a therapist who works with what’s going on in our minds (which is after all only a muscle) any different from going to the gym, seeing your GP or having your car serviced? Stigma.... We ask ourselves what other people would think of us if they knew we were seeing a therapist for our “mental health”.
I even thought that myself when I began my psychotherapy training, because it’s compulsory for me to see my therapist weekly for a minimum of forty sessions a year. I remember when I first started going to see my therapist how it made me feel uncomfortable. I have on more than one occasion, whilst driving to my sessions, thought “what am I going to talk about?” but it’s amazing how just opening my mouth and talking to someone impartial, who’s totally unassociated with my life, has been much easier than I thought it would be. Now I look forward to going. I have to confess that I didn’t tell anyone initially, but then I realised all the good it was doing me, because I could see the small beneficial changes in myself and how I was in my daily life. How it was actually helping me to make sense of certain things in my life and certain behavior patterns that I had. Having that one-hour a week where I can blurt out whatever is on my mind or bugging me; having my therapist’s non judgmental full and undivided attention, to work with me straightening things out that I may not be able to fathom properly myself, or where I just need an impartial person to unload to about things that have happened during the course of the week, is liberating if I’m honest. It’s great and helpful, sometimes we laugh and sometimes it’s sad and I cry as well, and it can be hard work, but it is also cathartic and has been for me, life changing.

19 • BELLEAU KITCHEN
INGREDIENTS:
Greek Yoghurt & Honey Cake
FOR THE CAKE: 125g full-fat TOTAL Greek yoghurt, 50ml vegetable oil, the finely grated zest of 1 orange, 3 free-range eggs, 125g caster sugar, 200g self-raising plain flour FOR THE BUTTERCREAM YOGHURT GLAZE 100g butter, 2 tablespoons TOTAL Greek yoghurt, 2 tablespoons runny honey, 200g icing sugar Preheat the oven to 180C and grease and line a 20cm deep cake tin with a loose bottom. In a large bowl beat together the yoghurt, vegetable oil, orange zest and eggs until light and fluffy... roughly 5 mins, then sift in the flour and sugar and mix until just combined. Spoon the mixture into the tin and bake for roughly 45 minutes... I did 30 mins, then turned the temp down to 160C for the last 15 mins. The cake will be done when golden and firm to touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Remove from the oven and leave to cool a little in the tin on a wire rack To make the glaze, beat the butter and yoghurt together for 5 mins, then add the sugar and honey... you should get a loose buttercream which should drizzle well onto the cake, it’s more like a glaze than an actual buttercream.

magazines & clippings Here’s something random and fun for you to join in with based on the Belleau Kitchen random recipes. We thought we would give it a go... many of you have more magazine clippings than actual cookbooks and if you’re anything like me you’ll have a stack of them a mile high filled with recipes you never got around to cooking. Well, now’s your chance to share with everyone locally! This month for random recipes I’d like you to randomly select a recipe from one of your magazine clippings. It can be from a dusty old pile of magazines, a tidy bundle of clippings or even a recipe from one of this weekends papers, the choice is entirely up to you. The rules are really simple if you want to play along: 1. Lay all your magazines or clippings in a giant pile in the living room – what?... I’m giving you an excuse to sort out your dusty old piles of hoarded recipes...
do it with a friend in the room who will make you stick to it... it’s a challenge after all and you’re only cheating yourself... this is specifically designed to take you out of your comfort zone...! 5. You may change the recipe for dietary, monetary or seasonal availability reasons only. 6. Email us your recipe and finished dish with high resolution pics and we will publish it in our next issue! Title your email ‘RANDOM RECIPES’.
2. Close your eyes, spin around, reach out your hand and pluck a recipe from the pile.
7. If you tweet your entry, like us, and let us know, including the hashtags #randomrecipes #villageliving, we will retweet all we see.
3. Create the exact recipe on this page and don’t cheat...
8. challenge deadline April 1st for publishing in the April issue.

21 • HAWTHORN VETERINARY SURGERY
Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries Under the Spotlight... With surgeries in the Old Bakehouse in Partridge Green and an equally charming victorian cottage in Henfield, Hawthorn Veterinary Surgeries presents the image of a traditional village veterinary practice...
T
o a certain extent this is true – many clients are so well known that they can be identified by the way in which they pull into the car park before they set foot in the practice! As part of the local community, owners Jonathan and Annelise Underwood take pleasure in the practice’s involvement in local events. There is a regular calendar of dog shows to judge, fundraisers to sponsor and schools to visit among other things. However, behind the scenes, the principle reason for the practice’s existence is more evident than ever. That is providing excellent veterinary care to the local community and their pets, which is achieved in a variety of ways. When Jonathan and Annelise took ownership of Hawthorn vets four years ago, the practice already had a reputation as a caring and welcoming, family run business and this is something that they are proud to have maintained. With many veterinary surgeries now owned by big, corporate companies it is nice that the practice has maintained its identity and local credentials. As well as maintaining the core values of the practice, in the past four years there has also been considerable investment and development of the facilities and the services offered. In 2012, a new consulting room and dental suite was created at the main surgery in Partridge Green. This has increased capacity to reduce waiting times and made treatment of dental problems more easy and effective. Additionally, new laboratory equipment was installed which enables the practice to produce accurate blood and urine results on the same day the samples are taken or submitted. This is especially valuable for pre-anaesthetic testing and for emergencies. In April last year, it was the Henfield surgery’s turn to receive an upgrade. Previously, the site offered consultations only, but since the refurbishment, it now boasts an operating theatre, kennel block, dental suite and an in-house laboratory of its own. The surgery is now open throughout the day from 9am – 6pm. The latest building work has only just been completed! The theatre at Partridge Green has been given a makeover with new cabinets, a surgical scrub sink and new flooring. Another very popular development has been the introduction of the “Practice Health Plan”. This scheme allows clients of the practice to pay monthly for vaccinations, flea treatments, worming and health checks – all at a reduced price. Members
of the health plan also receive discounts on other products and services within the practice. It has also been an eventful period for the staff at Hawthorn – the veterinary team has recently been bolstered by the addition of two vets, both called Rebecca. The “Rebeccas” bring a combined 30 years of experience and are a great addition to the team, even if there has been some name related confusion! It’s not only puppies and kittens which are welcomed at the practice – there have been four Hawthorn babies born with another two scheduled for delivery in the next 2 months! Overall it has been a pretty eventful four years in the history of Hawthorn Vets and an exciting period for both the staff and clients alike. We look forward to seeing what happens in the future!
