Furniture for Life at Oliver Simon Kay Ltd
O
liver turns his hand to the creative application of paint and wallpaper to breathe new life back into a selection of old furniture and has created a stunning new range of styles. This 1960’s teak McIntosh sideboard is transformed into a fresh new piece of furniture in contemporary French Grey and Lemon patterns. An old writing bureau that had seen better days is now a striking feature piece in a bold graphite, silver and red floral design. And an understated four drawer chest of drawers looks beautifully fresh in a green, leafy design. Not all the furniture is paper and paint. Some is painted of course, but some is just lovingly coaxed back into great condition showing off the beautiful old wood from which is was originally made. Oliver’s vision for his eclectic furniture
shop in Steyning is “Furniture for Life” and every old piece of pre-loved furniture that he sources receives his special attention before it goes onto the shop floor. Oliver started out his career as a muralist and specialist decorator. His eye for colour and design shows through in his collection of furniture and there is always something new and unusual to find. With Oliver’s background and experience in the field, it seemed logical for Oliver to start to offer paint workshops which will be held in the Steyning shop. Learn how to work with Chalk paints to create a beautiful finish, how to distress that piece of furniture to achieve just the right effect or even how to do marbling or gilding! Workshops start in April and details of the dates and pricing can be found on our website.
Come and see what treasure you will find...

BALOOS • 13
Baloos Bistro
M
ichelle and myself were delighted to be invited to visit Amanda and Chris for dinner in their fairly new Steyning setting, nestled in the heart of Steyning high Street, Baloos, is a culinary gem that I suggest if not insist you visit, you will have heard of and most likely visited their very successful restaurant in Henfield, now you have a chance to visit their sister site, in the lovely market town of Steyning. What was formerly an Indian restaurant has now been transformed into a delightful space, a charming, and chilled bistro to enjoy breakfast, lunch or an evening with friends and loved ones. Amanda and Chris the team behind this successful business have got the formula right once again, the Bistro, even for a Monday night was steadily busy and held a kind of peaceful atmosphere, spot on for a Monday night! The interior is stunning yet simple, you must see the hand painted by a local artist, murals on the wall! Chris in charge behind kitchen doors and basically takes fantastic produce and puts his own award winning twist into the recipe, keeping things simple to allow the quality of the produce to shine through., and the very lovely Amanda who has a passion for great hospitality, clearly takes great pride in ensuring customers are made to feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed. All their meat is locally sourced and supplied by Clive Millers Family Butcher of Hurstpierpoint. And sustainable fish
and seafood is supplied by Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales, at Portslade, Brighton. Local, fantastic wine is supplied by Giles, from South Downs Cellars, of Hurstpierpoint. He often joins them on food and wine nights when you can test his knowledge on wines from around the world (go to Baloos website for details on when these events are being held!). The menu was incredibly tempting and hard to choose from but we got there in the end! Chicken liver parfait, chutney and toast – was absolutely melt in the mouth sublime, homemade parfait and chutney, the parfait was so soft, and full of flavour. Crab cakes, breaded and served with herb mayonnaise – another delicious, homemade culinary treat, delicious with the slight lemon drizzle on the plate and the home made herb mayonnaise, so fresh and crisp on the outside perfect! Duck – Confit duck leg, chorizo and five bean ragu, buttered potatoes and fried cabbage and leeks, it is normally so difficult to get duck right as it tends to either be underdone and slightly fatty or overdone and dry, not so in this case, this was spot on, absolutely perfect, and an amazing combination with the bean ragu, the taste sensation was clearly well planned and just spot on! Sea bass – pesto rubbed fillet, prawn skewer, smoked garlic butter, spinach and potatoes, the fish was incredible, so fresh with crispy skin, and fish so fresh. Crème brulee – coffee infused, poppy seed shortbread – oh we HAD to just try it and oh, am I glad we did! I have literally never tasted brulee like this, absolutely incredible! You can definitely taste the difference here between someone that is a passionate chef and someone who cooks in the kitchen for work, Chris is clearly in tune with his menu, skill, customers and current trend, if we don’t see him on Masterchef next season I would like to know why! Incredibly reasonably priced, Baloos has something for everyone, we highly recommend you visit!

2016 Winner of
Steyning Grammar School’s Got Talent
News
“Edgy” was how one of the judges described the performance of this year’s Steyning Grammar School’s Got Talent competition winner Luke Fuest. The percussive acoustic performance of “Thunderstruck” by 17 year old Luke had the audience clapping along in no time as the first simple notes tapped out on the strings built into a complex body of rhythm and melody. The song was originally written by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, known for their distinctive heavy metal sound, but Luke’s performance on his acoustic guitar gave a new twist to the song. By using techniques of slapping, knocking and tapping on the body of the guitar at the same time as creating the harmony by tapping and strumming the strings Luke created the sound of several instruments. In fact one audience member was heard to ask where the rest of the band were! The Sixth Form College reported Luke’s performance of Thunderstruck as “exceptional”, and comments from the judging teachers on the night summed his performance up as showing ‘real talent’, describing it as ‘edgy’ and ‘almost a little bit country at times’. Luke has been learning the guitar for 5 years, starting initially with classical guitar and moving to electric after a year or so. He started to teach himself percussive acoustic techniques about a year ago. Steyning Grammar School’s Got Talent is an annual event and the competition, held on 26th February, raised £867 for the Malawian branch of the Steyning Family. The standard of all 17 acts this year was high with a range of singing, dancing and instrument performance.

19 • OTUS CARE
What is Live-in Care? As we grow older, living in our own home surrounded by our possessions, mementos of our past experiences and family, the question of ‘what if I couldn’t cope on my own’ often arises. And for most people, the next thought would be ‘the last thing I would want to do is leave my home – I want to stay here as long as I can’.
T
here may even be a time when we have undergone a procedure in hospital and are in need of respite care – not hospital care but to be in an environment where qualified people can keep an eye to check that we are making the right progress, taking medication and adhering to a recovery programme. It could be for a couple of weeks, a month or even longer. This is when engaging a live-in carer could be the solution. It delivers person centred and inclusive care, promotes independence and allows people to make choices about how and who will care from them within their own home. Feeling comfortable with where we live can have a big impact on our quality of life and most importantly, our health. We recover more effectively, have a more positive approach to life and feel safe and secure when we are in familiar surroundings, particularly in our later years. Having the need to seek help or simply companionship can come at a stressful time for the person and close family and friends. Knowing that 24 hour care is in place can be a great relief to all concerned. It can take the stress out of the situation, but more importantly it could be a life saver. Some of the benefits include: • Improved quality of life, health and wellbeing • Personalised care modified to meet patients’ needs • After care in own home post-surgery/stroke etc • Managed convalescence in own home (physio/medicine) • Management of recovery care/appointments • Potential to leave hospital sooner • Privacy and personal independence • Companionship and stimulation • Opportunity to keep pets (and the therapeutic advantages) • Cost effective – generally cheaper than a care home
What makes Otus Live-in Care different? Based in Partridge Green, Otus Live-in Care was launched early in 2012 by Paul and Stephanie Isaacs. Since its launch, the company has built a strong client and carer database, with growth predominantly coming as a result of invaluable service user recommendation and referrals from likeminded professionals in the care field. Promoting the right for informed choice is key to how the company operates. The company prides itself on attention to detail, offering a bespoke service introducing quality and experienced live-in
carers to clients who wish to remain living in their own homes, nationwide. Otus is a member of the United Kingdom Home Care Association (UKHCA), the professional association of home care providers from the independent, voluntary and not-for-profit and statutory sectors. The company has also been accredited as an Affiliate member of the Society for Later Life Advisers (SOLLA). Paul Isaacs, managing director, is a voluntary Trustee / Director of The Carers’ Support Services West Sussex, a charity supporting those caring for a relative or loved one. The credentials of the company are also enhanced by Paul’s intimate understanding of the care sector – he was previously Operations Director for Saga Homecare which incorporated Nestor Healthcare in 2010 and Allied Healthcare in 2011. Otus Live-in Care registered carers are all self-employed. They are responsible for their own training, tax, NI and liability insurance. Personal carers undergo a rigorous interview process before they are selected to join the Otus Live-in Care register. Only carers with relevant past experience will be considered – all identities are confirmed, references and certificates of training verified – and most importantly all have an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, including a check against the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) list. All carers receive a customer service briefing prior to being introduced to clients. This ensures that a client’s needs, likes and dislikes and requirements are met. Carers are introduced to clients, only once their skills and experience have been matched to the individual client’s needs.

St Barnabas is a charity whose aim is to provide high quality specialist palliative care both within the hospice and in the comfort of patients’ homes treating adults with advanced progressive life-limiting illnesses. Patients are never charged for their care. It costs nearly £6 million each year to run the hospice and only a small part of these costs are state funded. This means that the majority of the money has to be raised through voluntary donations from local communities within the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. For more information please visit www.stbh.org.uk Over the last 40 years, the hospice has cared for thousands of patients and their families in the areas of Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield. We have a fantastic calendar of fundraising events throughout the year, ranging from coffee mornings and quiz nights, to sporting challenges such as the South Downs Trek, taking place this October, and running places at major events like the Worthing 10K in June. Events are organised by our fundraising team, as well as supporters in the community including local clubs, school groups, businesses and our Friends of St Barnabas Groups. Our flagship event, the St Barnabas Night to Remember midnight walk, is taking place this year on Saturday 25 June. Starting at Worthing Leisure Centre, the ladies-only sponsored walk will see women of all ages take on the 7, 13.1 or 20 mile route to raise vital funds for the charity’s Hospice at Home night service, to help reach everyone who needs hospice care. How to be Happy :) I recently bought a painting. As I looked at it closely I could see how it is made up of several brush strokes and I started to liken these to all the experiences that make up our lives. The big events, the small wins, the tears and laughs are all brushstrokes on the canvas that is our life. It struck me that if life is like a painting, we control the brush. Yes, we can be the artist of our life. We can fashion our life instead of just letting it happen to us. Do you believe that? I tell my clients that they can create their own lives, and a painting is good analogy. You can make a big picture, just as you can construct the life you want. First, you need a vision. I ask what would be your perfect day? Where would you be and what would you be doing? What would your surroundings look like, how do they smell and what can you hear? Imagine your big dreams and deepest desires because you’ve got to start from somewhere and you might as well imagine something amazing, audacious and exciting. You want to run a beach bar in the Caribbean or trek around Japan one day? Do you want to run Salsa classes or be an expert in medieval silver? You can choose anything. No-one need know, it’s all yours to create. Go big! You are the artist and creator of your life. The next step is to break down your life into 5 areas. Your Livelihood and Lifestyle encompasses your career and money, the place you live and your possessions. Body and Wellness includes what you do for relaxation, your physical health and mental health. In Creativity and Learning, list your hobbies, interests, education, and your artistic and selfexpression. Relationships and Society would include family and friendships, community, and any causes you’re involved with. Essence and Spirituality is who you are in terms of your soul, faith, practices, truth and intuition. Taking each section, think about what’s working right now? What are you grateful for and why? How do these elements of your life add positively to your life? Then go back and ask yourself what you’re not happy about. What is causing sadness, frustration, discomfort or disappointment and how does this affect your life? Gaining this sort of clarity on your life and how you want each day to be is incredibly empowering. Once you gaze at your life in such detail you can start to play with the painting – the vision of what you’d like your life to be. You may not be able to run that Salsa class yet, but perhaps you could work on your health so you can dance around the kitchen without getting out of breath. The trek in Japan won’t happen this year, but exploring your local area with new eyes can give you that same feeling. It’s a start and a brilliant way to start creating the life you want. Let me know how you get on! www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

WEST SUSSEX HEATING • 31
WEST SUSSEX HEATING After moving back into West Sussex nearly two years ago to give our young son a village upbringing, we’re now focused on growing our small family heating business in and around the area we love and now call home.
Jon, our managing director and lead engineer is originally from the area and grew up in and around Shoreham. Jon has worked in the industry for over 17 years, running his own successful plumbing & heating company for more than 14 years, during which time he also began to subcontract boiler installations for British Gas. Still today we install up to 25 boilers a month for this renowned company, making us vastly experienced and exceptionally good at what we do and in 2013 we formed our own specialist heating company with the sole focus on installing brand new boilers & central heating systems on a daily basis. For every new boiler we install, we’re dedicated to quality workmanship and providing an exceptional service, at an affordable price.
Who we are…
What we do… We are experts in installing brand new boilers and heating systems. With our Managing Director having worked with British Gas for many years, we bring the skills, experience and standards of this renowned company to every project, just without the associated price tag.
In life, a comfortable and functional home is a necessity. We let you achieve this with our new boiler installations, providing you with ongoing warmth throughout the year.
How we work… When it comes to your home, we know you expect the very best. That’s why we work so hard to provide the best service, which sees new boilers installed to the very highest standards, we also provide our customers with a fixed-price quote at the outset of the work, so you’ll never have to pay any hidden costs, or be liable for any extras. For us, the service we provide is as important as the quality of the boilers we install.
Where we work… We’re based in Steyning, West Sussex and we’re pleased to serve customers throughout the county and all surrounding areas.
We are West Sussex Heating Ltd, A local, family run business, fully insured & ‘Gas Safe’ registered.
Why we do it…
Whether you want a cosy night in during the deep mid winter, need a long, relaxing shower, or whilst ploughing through the dishes after a fun dinner party with friends, a high-quality boiler is absolutely essential.
We have over 17 years’ experience in the trade, meaning you’re guaranteed the highest standard of workmanship, along with excellent customer service… We’re not happy unless you are.
