A GOOD FITTED SHIRT IS A MUST-HAVE IN EVERY GENTLEMAN’S WARDROBE... We should have at least five shirts – one for each working day and in a variety of colours and styles. Shirts should be good quality and if that means you need to pay a bit more it’s worth it.

A good quality cotton shirt with a great fit is essential. So what do you need to look for when buying a shirt? Make sure that you buy the right neck size so you can wear it with a tie or open if you want to have a more casual look. The shirts need to fit you well. Not too big or too small, it needs to be just right – which can be difficult to achieve with off the peg shirts. If you have broad shoulders, buy a size bigger so it will fit you around the shoulders and the waist can be taken in. The same applies to sleeve length. Get the sleeves a bit longer and then they can be taken up if needed. The best thing would be to get a shirt made-to-measure for your body shape, if your budget allows this. It is a great experience to design a shirt specifically for your needs... Made-to-measure shirts are really good quality and they will fit you perfectly. You can often pay a huge amount for a well known designer brand but it won’t fit you as well as one made to your body measurements. When you do have one made for yourself, it can be difficult to go back and buy off-thepeg shirts.

Come and visit us at Dandylion Style for the perfect shirt: 33a High Street Steyning BN44 3YE. Our visiting tailor service is still available to you wherever you are. Dandylion style Bespoke Tailoring Here at Dandylion Style tailors in Sussex we provide an excellent service at competitive prices. Our approach to tailoring is very relaxed and we offer amazing, luxurious British fabrics. Choose from a range of fine British fabrics, tailored to the style that flatters you best, and in a matter of weeks, you could be wearing a top quality, Made to measure suits, unique “one-off” garment designed for your physique and your occasions. If work commitments make it difficult for you to visit our studio, our Bespoke Tailoring service can come and visit you at work or at your home at a time that would suit you. The tailor will advise you on fittings, fabrics, linings and all different specification for the suit.

I always go for shirts made of Egyptian cotton – it’s very good quality and the cotton feels nice against the body. They don’t crease as much and are easy to iron. Wearing shirts with different ties will give you a fresh new look even if you do wear the same shirt. You can’t go wrong with a classic white shirt, but it is always good to have a few different colours in your wardrobe. You should check that they suit your complexion – so make sure you try shirts before you buy them – not only for the fit, but to make sure they don’t wash you out.

Twaróg & celery leaf frittata Twaróg (Polish farmer’s cheese) & celery leaf frittata. A simple brunch or supper dish with the fresh flavour of celery leaves, an ingredient that is often overlooked. Not just for garnishing Bloody Mary cocktails, and too good to waste, celery leaves are a much underused part of the vegetable. They add a distinct herbal flavour that complements the fresh, garlic infused twaróg cheese in this frittata recipe. Twaróg (Polish farmer’s cheese) is a quick and easy cheese to make at home, but you can by it ready made in Polish supermarkets and delicatessens, or substitute with a plain young fresh cheese such as ricotta. I like to serve this with a cucumber and tomato salad and sautéed potatoes.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4): 4 eggs, 100g twaróg, 100g celery leaves chopped, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 2 tsp oil, Salt & pepper.

TWARÓG: 1 litre whole milk, juice of 1 large lemon, 1 garlic clove. To make the twaróg: Slowly heat the milk with the garlic clove to boiling point. Remove from the heat and add the lemon juice. The milk should start to curdle and separate. Leave for 10 minutes before removing the garlic clove and draining through a muslin/ cheesecloth and a sieve over a bowl for 2-3 hours in the fridge. Store the twaróg in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use. To make the frittata: Heat the oil in deep 8 inch frying pan. Add the fennel seeds and fry until they start to ‘pop’ and sizzle. Whisk the eggs and add to the pan with half the chopped celery leaves, salt and pepper. Stir briefly before adding spoonfuls of twaróg evenly over the surface of the frittata, and sprinkling with smoked paprika. Cover and leave to cook on a low heat until just set. Top with the remaining celery leaves and serve hot or cold.

The fair is quirky and eclectic. It has a wildlife theme but also a vintage twist. The fair specialises in quality stalls from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire and stallholders who have actually made what they sell and so are able to talk with first hand knowledge about their product.

Or eat in our fabulous pop-up tearoom. The fair is becoming something of a foodies favourite. Well-behaved dogs on leads positively welcomed. There are free-roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer which may have young, so leads are essential at all times. We saw some gorgeous pooches come to the fair last year. We have thought of them with a several stalls selling delicious doggy treats for good dogs, plus handmade collars and leads. Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important re-wilding project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently

Small & Perfectly formed Steyning Arts hosts one of the smallest but we think, one of the most perfect art trails of the summer season. Because we’re small it is easy for you to visit every one of our venues over the two weekends that we are open. Our venues will showcase a diverse range of art and craft pieces perfectly formed by local artists. All our work is displayed for your pleasure and as always all our pieces will be looking for new homes. Brochures for our art trail can be found in the Steyning Bookshop and Library as well as other local outlets. If you’d like more information about our venues and artists you can visit our website, or for a more informal look at what we do why not check out our face book page.

Steyning Arts Art Trail runs from 28 May until the 5 June – weekends and Bank holiday Monday only. May 2016 • Village Living

H OLLY SIMMONDS • 15

I don’t know why there is still a stigma attached to mental health, but there is, and despite progression being made over the years, it’s still a much taboo subject. Whether or not you have a specific need to discuss as a one off, an ongoing unresolved issue, problems with weight loss, low self-esteem, hypnotherapy, sports motivation, the very lovely Holly Simmonds at West Sussex Personal Therapy is most definitely a great person to call upon. Michelle and I were lucky enough to meet Holly at her beautiful home in Henfield where she hosts her treatments from and got to know her. By the time we left we both felt as though had made a great new friend and a person we would both be recommending and indeed booking in with. If you visit Holly’s website you can see the extensive range of therapies she offers. With a BSc (Hons) Holly has just finished studying a Masters Level Foundation year as a trainee Psychotherapist in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy and is half way through the Clinical Year One. All Holly’s courses are fully accredited and recognised by the relevant governing bodies, of which she is a member. Holly’s approach to therapy is based upon her own experiences in therapies and training developing the kind of therapy that she would like, so her therapy is personal to each client and each client’s needs. Helping and working with people who struggle with feelings of being out of control emotionally, anxious or “out of whack” for whatever reason, problems can manifest in various different ways, which may present as different mental or physical health problems. This is where Holly steps in….

“We’ve all been at on top of the world on occasion, but at other times we’ve probably also been at rock bottom…. that’s just part of everyday life, but sometimes it’s hard and that’s when we may need someone to talk to, or give us a helping hand. 1 in 5 people go to see their GP for emotional or mental health problems.” Holly herself knows how hard it is to maintain a positive and mindful attitude, when life feels like an uphill struggle. Having suffered from underlying multi-systemic health problems, which have led to bouts of severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome on and off for the last 22 years, she has more than once been down about as far as you can go, so truly know what it’s like to be faced with physical and physiological uncertainty, whilst trying to maintain a smile.. So Why Choose Personal Therapy, Talking Therapy or Hypnotherapy? Holly has found that having seen a talking therapist (as a Clinical Year One Psychotherapist in training, she sees a therapist every week!) and worked on personal issues with a hypnotherapist as well, that combining Counselling, or Talking Therapy, NLP and Hypnotherapy works in a very subtle and gentle way. Through a gradual change in the subconscious with how we process our thoughts, balance is possible to be achieved in a completely safe way without trauma, and the problems faced in our everyday lives can be eradicated completely, worked with to lessen them to something more manageable, or reduced to something of insignificance. As a professional Therapist Holly feels strongly about a “Duty of Care” to you, the client, putting your interests first and making your therapy as empathetic and caring as possible, whilst ensuring we get your symptoms, issues or problem resolved. The aim Is to utilise her “life skills” along with clinical skills helping people who, like herself, may have struggled with things throughout their lives, or maybe someone who has only now got a single issue they are struggling with right now. • Taking the first step is always the hardest part. • P icking up the phone, or sending an email and asking for help takes braveness.

Contact Holly on 07774 148285 or holly@westsussexpersonaltherapy.co.uk For a confidential discussion about your symptoms or treatment.

PILATES • 17

Mind. Body. Pilates. Mother of two and previous nursery owner on Shoreham Beach, Sharon Barret is a real doer! Having started out with a sports degree and qualifications in the sports and fitness area, Sharon enjoyed many years as both a performer and teacher. After getting married and having her lovely children, Sharon took over a struggling children’s nursery on Shoreham Beach which she pulled from strength to strength over eleven and a half years turning it into a fantastic and thriving business going from an intake of fourteen to children to forty on her books ! After eleven and half years as owner and manager of the nursery Sharon was keen to return to her fitness life and trained for a year to become qualified to teach This included a level 2 and level 3 in Anatomy and Physiology!! My qualification is: VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Mat Based Pilates

A

s a regular now to Sharon’s Monday class in Lancing I can feel my core strength and posture improving week by week, I appreciate that whilst Pilates is not a quick fix weight loss exercise, it is one for life, I have finally found an exercise I can do and keep up with! Pilates in addition to healthy eating and another exercise such as regular walking or swimming would have positive and quick weight loss results and generally improve mind and body on a long term basis. Sharon’s classes are friendly and relaxed with a calm and peaceful atmosphere. With so much to remember when you start you concentrate so hard on the moves that you literally switch off from the outside world completely which if like me you have a mind that runs at 100 miles a second, is actually a very welcome break and it has similar restorative (at least for me) properties as meditation! With clear instruction, you will not find yourself worrying about falling behind or not getting it right, Sharon comes round to each class member and helps you into the move and shows you how to maintain and hold for maximum effect. Everyone is really nice and friendly and I am looking forward to my next class! I might even step it up and join the ladies and gentlemen (yes, Sharon’s classes welcome EVERYONE so don’t be shy!) in Steyning too. To give you a little more information on Pilates itself I had a look at www.nhs.uk see to follow, their site is really informative. I highly recommend the Mind.Body.Pilates classes with Sharon; they are very fairly priced, small and with maximum attention given. Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing, developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected his methods were influenced by western forms of exercise including gymnastics, boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling. Pilates immigrated to the US in the 1920s and opened a studio in New York, where he taught his method

– which he called Contrology – for several decades. Similar to Yoga, while the methods are different, Pilates and yoga both develop strength, balance, flexibility, posture and good breathing technique. Both systems emphasise the connection between physical and mental health, although yoga places more emphasis on relaxation and uses meditation. Pilates is performed both on apparatus and mats, whereas classic yoga doesn’t require any equipment. Pilate’s exercises are performed in a flow of movement without the static poses associated with yoga.

Sharon’s classes are as follows: Monday’s class at Brooks Dance Academy 339-341 Brighton Rd, Lancing (next to Leaneys Bathrooms) 9.30-10.30am £7.00 Beginners/Intermediate. Wednesday 9.15-10.15am, Penfold hall, Church St, Steyning Lovely venue, small & friendly class, lots of individual help and attention given. £7.00 all abilities welcome. Great for beginners. Message or call to book a place/for more information. Thursday’s Pilates Class: Southwick Community Church Roman Crescent, Southwick 9.30-10.30is £7.00 Beginners/ Intermediate Small, hands on class for individual help, support and attention. Book a place or just turn up! Sharon shall hopefully be qualified to teach Pre/Post Natal Pilates classes in the next 3 months; such a great exercise programme to help before and after pregnancy, so keep an eye on updates on fb page! Please call Sharon Barrett – 07969610030 or go to fb Mind.Body.Pilates Yoga & Pilates page for more information.

OLIVER SIMON KAY • 19

Upcycle it yourself! Isn’t it great when, in this world of throwaway things, we find that little treasure that is just crying out to be reincarnated into something new and beautiful? Take a tired old table from a car boot sale or a junk shop and with a little vision and a little paint, transform it into a piece of furniture that will be the envy of your friends. Buy a chest of drawers from a furniture shop at a reasonable price and transform it into something worth so much more. This is the basic premise behind the business that has become Oliver Simon Kay Ltd – Furniture for Life in Steyning West Sussex. Oliver’s background as a specialist decorator and muralist lends itself well to his fabulous shop where you

will find all manner of antique, vintage and retro furniture. Some is beautifully painted or papered in contemporary, striking designs. Other pieces are just coaxed back to their former glory with a little fixing, cleaning and polishing. Take a look around this sophisticated shop and see what treasure you will find! And for those who have the desire to create something wonderful and don’t mind getting their hands dirty, how about joining one of Oliver’s furniture painting workshops? At just £60 per session, the session includes paint and materials and shows how to achieve fabulous results every time.

The Brighton Charity Ball 2016 in aid of Brain Tumour Research Charity No.1153487

In loving memory of Lola Rice

After the tremendous success of The Brighton Charity Ball 2014, Gifts for Angels have once again teamed up with Vivacious Events to host yet another Grand Event, to raise much needed funds for the charity ‘Brain Tumour Research’. It promises to be an evening of wonderful entertainment and old style Hollywood Glamour. The Brighton Charity Ball 2016, will be held at the Hilton Brighton Metropole Hotel on 8th October 2016. The evening will start with a drinks reception, followed by a 3 course meal to include wine as well as live entertainment throughout the evening with a few surprises thrown in. There will be a raffle with some fantastic prizes which previously included a Ski Holiday, Kids Euro Camp, PS2, Mulberry Handbag, Magnums of Champagne and so much more. Tickets are priced at £70. Per person and available from www.vivacious-events.co.uk/#!brighton-ball-tickets. Tables are set to accommodate 10, but tickets can be sold individually.

many different tests in hospital was eventually given a brain scan where they found a huge tumour. Unlike most cancers, brain cancer is rising. Less than 20% of those diagnosed with brain cancer survive beyond 5 years. In 2014, brain Tumour received 1.5% (£7.7 million) of the £498 Million national spend on research into cancer. At this rate it could take 100 years plus to catch up with developments in other diseases.16,000 people a year are diagnosed with a primary or secondary Brain Tumour. I firmly believe research is the only way. For more information on this charity please go to: www.braintumourresearch.org Brain Tumour Research registered charity number 1153487 (England & Wales)

Why Brain Tumour Research? Gifts for Angels was set up in memory of my daughter Lola, who sadly passed away in 2006 from a brain Tumour, she was 2 years 8 months old. We sell bright and beautiful grave side ornaments and sympathy gifts via our website www.giftsforangels.co.uk and are an avid supporter of brain Tumour research. Brain Tumours kill more Children and adults under forty than any other cancer! We simply do not know anything about them, Lola was misdiagnosed by 3 separate Doctors, and after
