8 • RECIPE

Chocolate, Coconut & Banana Trufflle Brownies If you’ve been following my blog over the past few months you’ll know I’ve been developing some sugar-free recipes but you may not know the reason why. Well, i’ve been working closely with the good people at Leisure Cookers to who have invited me to become an ambassador for their #TribesToTable campaign... the Tribes are a celebration of cooking and no matter what you love to cook, be it a meat lover, a fish lover or a veg lover, there’s a tribe for you. I have the honour of being the chief of the Baking Tribe... as you know I love all kinds of cooking but it has to be said, I adore baking. Baking is my comfort place, it’s what I do to relax, whether it’s bread and pastry or cakes and puddings, I feel I’ve make it home when there’s something baking in my lovely Leisure oven... and with the brilliant Great british Bake-Off back on our screens, I’m sure you’ll agree, the whole nation is pretty much baking mad, so here’s to the best Tribe of all...sugar-free brownie heaven. This brownie recipe is by my new favourite chef turned food-writer Henrietta Inman whose brilliant book Clean Cakes has been a revelation to me. Henrietta’s work comes from years of experience as a pastry chef so you get the impression that she knows what this is supposed to taste like and not replacing sugar with brick dust. I’ve messed around with the original recipe slightly, adding desiccated coconut and banana again which I think has made them a little less rich. I also used ingredients I already had and added a few of my own and as I say above the results really are rather wonderful.

100g raw virgin coconut oil 150g raw cocoa powder 250g coconut sugar 1teaspoon sea salt flakes 4 large free-range eggs - beaten 1 ripe banana - mashed 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 80g brown teff flour 50g desiccated coconut 50g coconut flakes 100g pecans –roughly chopped

Preheat the oven to 170C and grease and line a 30cm x 20cm brownie tin Add the sugar, salt, flour, half the pecans and desiccated coconut to a large bowl and stir together In a small pan over a very low heat, melt the coconut oil then add the cocoa powder and stir in until you have a glorious shiny liquid, then pour this over the coconut sugar and flour mix until combined then add the beaten eggs, vanilla and banana and stir vigorously together Pour into the brownie tin and sprinkle over the remaining pecans and the coconut flakes Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the flakes are toasted and a skewer inserted comes out clean then cool on a wire rack. serve in small slices as this is very very rich. Eat and of course, enjoy!

Autumn / Winter trends It’s that time of year when we reluctantly prepare to say goodbye to the sunshine and hello to a new coat as we look ahead into Autumn/Winter, says Carol Ives – Stylist

B

ut hold it right there, it’s not all doom and gloom I promise, I’m here to tell you that it’s time to shine, and in more way than one!

When I was asked if I would share with you the trends that lie ahead I was excited to be given the opportunity to get an important message out to you... It’s time to simply be you! Finally, even the designers are encouraging us not to delve into their dictations, but to take their knowledge and make it your own. As a stylist for over twenty years, this is sweet music to my ears and I’ve never been happier to be able to set you free rather than tell you what you ‘should’ be wearing. Whatever style you think you are, Classic, Creative, Eclectic , maybe you are a comfort queen? Maybe no label defines you, whoever you are; Autumn/winter has your back.

It’s a bit like deciding which character you are from Sex in The City or The Golden Girls, most of us are a bit of a mix, and this is how to look at the trends ahead, it’s time to simply be who you are and whichever trend you choose, and however you choose to wear it, be confident in the knowledge that you can’t get it wrong. Ok, are you ready for this, the catwalks for Autumn/Winter gave us an abundance of choice and the high street will do the same, so take note and take your time. It’s never been a better time to play and do it your way, be interested, be influenced (we all are) but remain individual. Colours fade in and out and are given a pearlized finish, luxurious velvets in hues of Gold, pink, mauve ,olive & ice blue, topped off with a sweetheart neckline to sweeten a magical, mystery tour of fashions. Big & bold or stand alone, oversized or classic, effortless style or blush in pink. One thing shone through…Tis the season to shine, and there is no need to wait until after dark! The shimmer adorns coats of all styles, it’s added to snake prints and threaded through knitwear, Go all out like D&G with their shiny animal print or simply add a silver bag to your daywear. Feel free to maximise your bling or keep it subtle. I for one am loving this trend; it is going to cheer up our autumn days ahead. Accessories held a lot of importance, big and bold, cuffs, large earrings, bright colours or metallic. Allow the day and night time to blur into one and don’t be afraid to make a statement. Belts are huge this season too, worn around dresses, knitwear and definitely with the coat, tie and wrap yourself up this autumn. Fur trims, heavy embroidery and large embellishments are added to everything, and Gucci gave us the go ahead for bows and frills to carry on into winter. Ruffles on knitwear, even bows on jewellery. This feminine look will leave you feeling that sunny days are only ever around the corner. The coat-belted and camel/military/puffa/bomber/fur trimmed/embroidered/pink/shearling/metallic/take your pick.

Fendi got the message across that nothing is too much by bringing us the parka in this seasons pink with a fur trim, even Burberry turned their iconic trench coat into a glossy snakeskin must have. You now have permission to mix it up, go for effortless chic with the belted camel coat or stand alone in your pink shearling or parka. The key word is oversized which ever style you choose, but just how big is oversized?, my advice, whatever style you choose, wear it well and don’t let it wear you, if you look in the mirror and the person you see is a bigger character than you, put the coat back! Remember for once fashion is all about you!! The luxury of velvet will be everywhere this season, even on our footwear! (make sure you check the weather forecast if you delve into this temptation.)One of my favourite designers Roberto Cavalli showed us how decadent and luxurious velvet can look, it’s a real winter warmer that will shine now, take us through to Christmas, and will carry on into spring summer, so invest wisely and make it last. The Prince of Wales check was the strong contrast this season, Victoria Beckham got behind this trend, bringing us the throw on comfort look, instead of her usual structured style. The colours are atmospheric, hues of gold, raspberry pinks and blush, mauves; both warm and cold, olive and ice blue. Imagine a beautiful sunset, an oriental night. Transparent and serene, the colours are blended, blurred and then sheen is added and night turns into day. It truly is an exciting season ahead. So, whether you like a small bow on your simple shoe or you’d rather be strutting your stuff in a metallic ankle boots on the way to work (yes, daytime), feel it this fall, do it your way or not at all! A little about me.. A stylist with 20yrs experience, working in Edtorial, Advertorial, Catalogue, Promos etc, I was ok Magazine’s main stylist for seven years, I was known as a celebrity stylist and I have a celebrity clientele. I’ve worked on live TV on This Morning and the Vanessa Show doing live makeovers with Trevor Sorbie. Currently I stock a collection of clothing at The Consortium, bringing Italian clothing to the area at affordable prices. Interior Autumn Trends Summer has been, mostly, good to us in 2016 but now it is time to pick our gloriously tanned bodies off the beach and drag them back to our neglected homes! From Rachelle @ Popsicle Interiors www.popsicleinteriors.com If you are a dedicated follower of seasonal interiors then your home will be currently sporting a light and airy scheme of yellows, pinks, greys and geometric patterns shaped in light tones. It’s now time to move on, but keep the grey, the darker the better and instead of pairing it with lemon yellow or flamingo pink, as we did during summer, choose instead a nice rich burnt orange to compliment it.

you are looking for to liven things up, I am of course talking about florals. Using florals in any room scheme is tricky to get right i.e. looking ‘on trend’ rather than ‘old aged’. This season’s interior florals are inspired by those found at New York Fashion Week, the prints you should be sourcing are simple and modern not fussy and out-dated.

Keeping with colours, metallic is in and in a big way. If you are going to use metallic in your scheme be brave, be bold and mix it up – don’t be scared of clashing the colours and using different textures. To complete a metallic room use a nice, preferably vintage, piece of mirrored furniture.

Finally, if you’re considering purchasing some new key pieces of furniture for your Autumnal home a desk and a cocktail cabinet are what you want to spend your money on.

Time has moved on from blogging in our beds and instead we all need to adult a bit better, this means getting up and sitting at a desk to write our seasonal musings. If you plan on changing When choosing a any light fittings in your desk, do not fall in to home this season then the trap of choosing think hotel opulence; over something small to the top, sparkling, talking hide away in the pieces hanging from corner, choose a your ceiling and standing proudly on your side tables. statement desk, one that reflects your needs and personality, be proud of your desk and display it The new ‘Next’ Venetian confidently. Working hard at your new desk? Then it’s lighting collection is a time to play hard and open up your cocktail cabinet. perfect example of how Yes it’s happened the cocktail cabinet is back and this lavish look can available on the high street. Marks and Spencer have be found on the high street at reasonable prices. created the cabinet we should all own this autumn and it’s displayed, by them, in the space we should If you are not a fan of metallic and mirrors then all be living in this autumn! maybe the other key look this autumn may be what

How to be Happy :) When I started this column last year, I called it How to be Happy, so this month I thought I’d go back to that. Most of us like to think we are happy, but I’ve met many people stuck in jobs they don’t enjoy, just waiting to retire. I know people who get caught up in other folk’s relationships and relish the often gory details. Others immediately tell you what’s going wrong in their life, without giving thanks for what they have. There are many articles on how to be happy and I think it’s always good to see what happy people themselves do. Here’s my list; are these the secrets of happy people? See if you agree: 1. They give Researchers have found that once you have enough money to look after the essentials, money can help you in only 2 ways. One is to improve your social standing the other is to give. By giving money to others, happy people feel they are making a positive contribution to society. 2. They are grateful I’ve written about this before. Starting the day by feeling grateful and giving thanks for what you have, puts you in a happy and cheerful mood for the rest of the day. 3. They value relationships Putting people before money and career advancement will always make one happier. The happiest people know it’s best to spend time with the people they care about, have fun with their friends and share experiences. 4. They look on the bright side Even when life gets tough, happy people have a strong belief that it’s not a disaster and everything will turn out alright. It’s also about maintaining perspective and refusing to dwell on failure. 5. They avoid drama Speaking of keeping things in perspective, happy people also don’t involve themselves in other people’s dramas. Focusing on your own life rather than paying attention to other people’s is a simple way of staying happy. 6. They follow their passion Happy people refuse to spend precious time doing something they’re not really happy with. They follow their passions and if they find themselves in a job or activity they don’t enjoy, they’re willing to find ways to change it. Happy people will take the risk when they want to find joy. 7. They prefer experiences over material possessions Happy people recognize that the buzz to be had over buying something is nothing compared to an amazing experience that will give them memories to cherish. For example, a scuba diving trip with your best friends is going to stay with you longer than an expensive kitchen gadget. 8. They have many interests Happy people are busy people, having lots of interests with different people. Their life is not defined by one activity. They have hobbies, go places, learn and develop, learn something new. They are open-hearted to whatever life brings. If one part of their life goes pear-shaped, they have another aspect of their life to keep them happy. What are your secrets to being happy? I’d love to know. www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

World Spine Day

21

October 16th

October 16, every year, is World Spine Day. This year the focus is to encourage everyone to Straighten Up and Move! Spinal disorders are amongst the leading causes of disability. When people cannot move or get around properly, it impacts on their quality of life, their ability to work and their relationships with those around them. Most of us will suffer back or neck pain at some point in our lives. It can be a result of an injury from lifting or twisting. It can be related to the work we do, especially when it is repetitive and in awkward positions. We know that sitting for prolonged periods can increase our risk of back pain. Simply getting older can make us vulnerable to spine and joint pain, especially if we don’t move around as much as we used to. Straighten Up is a series of simple exercises that people of all ages can do to help people be kind to their spines. It encourages people to stand tall and improve their flexibility. To support World Spine Day Mark from Well Adjusted Health will be offering free back checks on a Spinal Analysis Machine please call 01903 892171 to book a 15 minute FREE assessment. For the month of October an Initial Consultation will cost just £20 (usual price £50) when quoting ‘World Spine Day’. If you would like a copy of the Straighten Up leaflet which is a 3 minute spinal health program – a series of gentle exercises we would be happy to send you one. If you have a specific question regarding any pain or problem areas, or would like to book a FREE 15 minute consultation for you or your family please call Well Adjusted Health on 01903 892171

WEST SUSSEX BACKHEATING IN TIME • 23

WEST SUSSEX HEATING After moving back into West Sussex nearly two years ago to give our young son a village upbringing, we’re now focused on growing our small family heating business in and around the area we love and now call home.

Jon, our managing director and lead engineer is originally from the area and grew up in and around Shoreham. Jon has worked in the industry for over 17 years, running his own successful plumbing & heating company for more than 14 years, during which time he also began to subcontract boiler installations for British Gas. Still today we install up to 25 boilers a month for this renowned company, making us vastly experienced and exceptionally good at what we do and in 2013 we formed our own specialist heating company with the sole focus on installing brand new boilers & central heating systems on a daily basis. For every new boiler we install, we’re dedicated to quality workmanship and providing an exceptional service, at an affordable price.

Who we are…

Whether you want a cosy night in during the deep mid winter, need a long, relaxing shower, or whilst ploughing through the dishes after a fun dinner party with friends, a high-quality boiler is absolutely essential.

How we work… When it comes to your home, we know you expect the very best. That’s why we work so hard to provide the best service, which sees new boilers installed to the very highest standards, we also provide our customers with a fixed-price quote at the outset of the work, so you’ll never have to pay any hidden costs, or be liable for any extras. For us, the service we provide is as important as the quality of the boilers we install.

Where we work… We’re based in Steyning, West Sussex and we’re pleased to serve customers throughout the county and all surrounding areas.

We are West Sussex Heating Ltd, A local, family run business, fully insured & ‘Gas Safe’ registered.

What we do… We are experts in installing brand new boilers and heating systems. With our Managing Director having worked with British Gas for many years, we bring the skills, experience and standards of this renowned company to every project, just without the associated price tag.

Why we do it… In life, a comfortable and functional home is a necessity. We let you achieve this with our new boiler installations, providing you with ongoing warmth throughout the year.

We have over 17 years’ experience in the trade, meaning you’re guaranteed the highest standard of workmanship, along with excellent customer service… We’re not happy unless you are.

Call us today for a free, no-obligation, fixed price quote Phone: 07526 442 474 or 01903 412035 Email: info@westsussexheating.co.uk Website: www.westsussexheating.co.uk

NUMBER EIGHT OR “THE OLD GRANARY” as the property is also known, is a substantial contemporary town house nestled in the very heart of historic Shoreham by Sea.

As the name implies the property was originally built c1900 to house grain and was subsequently put to use as a chandelier factory and later a music studio. Internal styling and features are stylish contemporary and include oak doors throughout, high quality Laufen and Clearwater bathroom fittings and a striking contemporary kitchen that includes a four oven gas AGA. The property is arranged over three floors, which are accessed by a large stone centrepiece spiral staircase and include a master bedroom suite with walk-in wardrobe and ensuite bathroom with mood lighting, shower and airbath. There are also three further bedrooms, a guest bath/shower room, a large utility room, a study, downstairs shower room and a conservatory dining room. The property is almost unique for town centre living as it benefits from both an enclosed “London” style garden and gated parking for one/two cars. A number of high tech features such as the central vacuum, heatmiser zonal temperature control system, heat recovery ventilation system and “Quooker” boiling water tap all help to complete this very contemporary living space set within both a historic building and town. Shoreham Train Station is within walking distance of the property, only 0.4 miles away, providing excellent train links direct into Brighton in 20 minutes, London Victoria in 70 minutes and London Bridge in 90 minutes.
