MOLLY
At the end of ‘16 local teenager Molly Hayward shaved her long head of hair for charity. Raising over £800 for her chosen charity, Molly should be very proud of herself! Going from a full head of thick hair that was long past her shoulders, Molly now sports an elfin crop! The charity Molly chose was Great Ormond Street Hospital, In her own words, she told us why she chose GoSH, and what made her take such measures! “I want to be able to help and support this hospital that does such great and amazing things for children with illness and injuries. No one deserves to live an unhappy or painful life and I’d like to somehow contribute to making a child’s life a little easier. I couldn’t think of a better charity to do my best to support than GOSH! And with your support we could really help make a child’s life somewhat easier. Thank you x” Day of the shave: “Today I will be shaving my head! Thank you so much to all my lovely friends and family who have supported me throughout the way, and to those of you who have made nasty comments, Its just made me want to do it even more! One of the main reasons I have committed to this is to remove the stigma around women with short hair. Women with short hair do NOT look like boys, they do NOT look weird or ugly. They are beautiful, they are feminine, and most of all,
they are themselves. What is hair to decide how beautiful you are? Hair, in the past, has been a way to show your gender, but I so strongly believe that we need to move past this and it needs to be about YOU! About expressing yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin. I’ve had comments made about me that I won’t repeat, just showing that there is still a HUGE problem with how women are seen in our society, as sexual objects, nothing more, nothing less. And it seems if I shave my head today I’ll no longer be good at these things that women are ‘meant’ to be good at... I’ve read articles saying women with short hair are more “masculine” and “abrasive” and apparently we are damaged? And I can’t help but notice it is men who are setting these standards for us. So, by shaving my head, not only have we done an amazing thing for a well-deserved cause, but I also know how empowered and strong I am going to feel being me! And it’s true, I really do feel strong and empowered. Having short hair has allowed me to come to terms with my ‘naked self’. I can no longer hide my face behind a huge head of hair. I have to embrace it, all of it”. Following on from this charity event, for a college project, Molly has been working on publishing a ‘zine’ based around teenage girls and how they are “supposed” to look according to the media, and other unrealistic standards that are set. She will publish this and a short blog on the subject by May 2017, hoping to spread awareness and hopefully give young women a bit of self/body confidence. This really is a crazy, mixed up world we live in where we are defined so harshly on our appearance, fortunately the next generation of youngsters seem to have seen through this shallow veil and are prepared to rebel against it – good on Molly, I hope her attitude towards looks and being empowered by ones choice to look the way you wish to, and not be dictated to by others is shared and embraced! Molly has also been modelling for the uber brand Superdry and has been asked to model for Age of Reason’s next collection! With the future in the hands of inspirational young women such as Molly, perhaps there is hope yet…

10 • LOUISE GLASSE INTERIORS
Louisa Glasse Interiors Established for more than twenty years, Louie Glasse and Emma O’Hea offer a personal service for aspects of the home including making beautiful curtains, Roman blinds, Venetian blinds, pelmets and accessories. Louie worked at top London interior design company, Fiona Campbell Design Ltd before setting up her own business. Louie comments: ‘Each window is carefully considered when it comes to designing a curtain or blind. Aspects of light – especially lack of it – and different window heights all have to be looked at.’ In fact, the business has changed significantly in recent years as people adopt a more minimalistic approach. Louie adds: ‘Twenty-five years ago, when swags and tails were ‘in’, we would choose spectacular trims and inset borders for the curtains and swags. Then, curtains would often have integral pelmets with a bullion fringe along the bottom of the pelmet. Now it’s all about simplicity – curtains with cartridge headings, with little fullness, attached to metal poles by rings or eyelets to give a minimalistic approach. Attention to detail is vital and we always ensure that all headings fit into the pattern repeat to give the optimum visual effect. Goblet or French headings are always hand-sewn. Emma and I always feel that although we can guide the client, ultimately it is their choice. We have accounts with many leading fabric suppliers including Lewis & Wood, Design Forum, Osborne & Little, Ian Mankin, Designers Guild and many more.’
florals or a plain linen mix can all be used and the blind can have a blackout lining so that once down the room is totally dark. Each blind is made to a very high standard and is mounted onto a durable track system that comes with child safety mechanisms. ‘We always make sure that the blind is stacked as high as possible once up so no light is lost.’ Roller blinds are clean and uncluttered and can be made up in most fabrics that Louisa Glasse Interiors supply.
When it comes to curtains, poles are important especially taking in account the fact that linings and interlinings can be heavy. A client is shown samples of 2” wooden poles in various woods, ranging from inexpensive ones to those which are hand finished with a paint colour (for example Farrow and Ball) with woods ranging from pine to tulip. 19mm metal poles in all sorts of metal finishes are usually the most popular and certainly fit within most people’s budgets.
Venetian blinds are another popular choice – 25mm slats in a ‘nickel’ finish (or one of many other colours) – easily adjustable to vary the amount of light coming from them.
Roman blinds are still very popular and there is an extraordinary number of fabrics available. Abstracts,
‘With so many choices to be made we can hopefully take the sting out of all the decision making.’
‘We can provide blinds that are very contemporary in greys that you can see out of once down but which can’t be seen into from outside!’

HOLLY SIMMONDS • 11
The Crutches of Daily Life Over the last month and ongoing for another few weeks, I have been privilege to an extensive amount of training by a charity I am hoping to work with. The training is around Drug & Alcohol dependency – one a “taboo” subject, unless given in prescriptive form and the other an “accepted” part of daily life.
O
ne thing I have learned from the training so far, is how we all seem to have dependency on one thing or another, and that the dependency may well be something we wouldn’t even consider under most circumstances. It could even be drinking lots of cups of tea (caffeine). Please note that I do not condone the use of illegal substances… but any dependency really does give pause for thought irrespective of what it may be. So as you read this, I invite you to consider what you think you might be dependent on? Oh, and we tend to be dependent on what makes us feel good!! Surprise surprise… Might it be chocolate, caffeine, sugar, wine, beer, cigarettes, food, Facebook & other social media, exercise, over the counter or prescriptive painkillers and drugs….. the list can actually, and surprisingly is if I’m honest, be endless. • Do you come home after a day’s work, or after you’ve put the kids to bed and petrol in the car and not been able to resist a bar or two of chocolate from the petrol station? • Is it automatic in the morning when you wake up to check your emails or Facebook and other social media? • How many times a day might you switch the kettle on for a cup of tea or coffee?
• Do you light a cigarette as soon as you’ve been awake for a short while? • Do you crave something sweet and sugary when you sit on the sofa watching reach for the bottle and a glass of wine or two, or even three? • A bit of telly in the evening? Now I bet none of the above scenarios sounds like anything out of the norm do they? However, what happens if you had to consider and maybe acknowledge how often you might make the choice (and notice my use of the word CHOICE here) to reach for the bottle of wine or that can of beer, to switch the kettle on, to reach for a bar of chocolate, the phone, some food, the painkillers, or a cigarette? In my case it was chocolate and portion problems with food! I bet you’d be surprised at just how automatic doing any or all of these things has become – I was. Continuous repetition is where a habit begins to take shape and from a habit a dependency can grow and grow until you physically and emotionally seem to rely on whatever you have chosen as your dependent “drug of choice”…. However….. habits and behaviours can be changed with help, understanding and learning awareness around what the link is to the “Why” of the behaviour.

Strand Wholewheat ChallahBread They say that to bake a successful loaf you need to be in a good mood or your negativity will be transmitted into the dough… It is true that I need to be in the right mood for cooking and being a food blogger it’s lucky that I’m more often than not in that mood, but seeing that I have quite a changeable temperament on an hourly basis it is a wonder I get anything done… Challah is a traditional Jewish bread made for eating on the Sabbath. It’s a slightly sweet bread made with eggs that is very similar in taste and texture to brioche although it is eaten mainly as a savoury bread. Tradition would dictate that 2 loaves were baked, one for eating on the Friday evening and the other for the Saturday as the Sabbath doesn’t actually end until after sundown on the Saturday night and the law tells us that we’re not supposed to ‘work’ on the Sabbath, which includes baking bread. I guess the inclusion of honey and eggs into the bread guarantees a longer shelf life for the loaves. The recipe below is easily enough for two loaves but if you want to impress with a bit of a centrepiece bread then go for one large 5 strand loaf, it’s surprisingly easy to do yet looks complicated enough to elicit a few wows from the crowd…
300g strong white bread flour, 400g wholewheat bread flour 1 & 1/2 teaspoons salt, 80g unsalted butter, 2 generous teaspoons of honey, 2 teaspoons fast action dried yeast 3 large eggs – beaten, 8ft oz warm milk, 1 egg beaten for the glaze Place the flour and salt in a large ceramic bowl and rub in the butter, then stir in the yeast and the salt. Place the honey into the milk and warm it gently, then pour this and the beaten egg to the flour. Using a rubber spatula, bring it together until a dough forms, then turn it our onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until soft. It will be very sticky at first but a little flour sprinkled on your work surface will help. Oil the bowl. Place the kneaded dough back into the oiled bowl, cover with cling film and let it rise until doubled in size, which should be roughly an hour. Knead again for 5 minutes, then place it back in the bowl and let it rise again, till doubled. Once risen, remove from the bowl and gently roll out into one long fat sausage and divide into 5 equal portions… I weighed each of my portions and they were roughly 250g each. Gently roll each portion into a long sausage shape and connect them all at one end. Fan them out into the 5 strands with an obvious gap between the second and third strand so you have 2 strands to the left and 3 strands to the right. This two/ three split is the key as you pass the furthest strand on the right (where you’ve got 3 strands) over into the gap and push left slightly so you now have 3 strands to the left and 2 strands to the right. Now you repeat the process from the left, passing the furthest strand on the left over towards the gap in the middle and scoot it to the right so you’re back to the original pattern of 3 strands on the right and 2 on the left. Repeat until there’s no dough left and tuck the ends under until you have a neat loaf, then carefully tip and roll onto your baking tray. Brush with beaten egg and refrigerate over night then in the morning, brush with egg again and bake on 190c for 15-20 minutes until golden and risen… if your loaf is anything like mine it will be very long and slightly too long for the oven, so watch it as it will burn where it touches the oven…
Eat and of course, enjoy!

Memory Lane Books Grace Parker had been telling her two grandchildren about travelling to Australia as one of the Ten Pound Poms when she realised her story might soon be forgotten...
“It was such an important time of my life but I never really talk about it,” says Grace. “I wanted to write it down so that my great-grandchildren could find out about what I did.” Many of us regret not knowing more about our parents and grandparents. Photographs are fine while they’re still around to explain who’s who, but will a dusty album mean anything to future generations? Writing your life story can allow your children or grandchildren to learn more about you, deal with unfinished business or even reveal family secrets. If you fancy having a go yourself, you could start by writing a memoir, which doesn’t have to include every detail of your life in chronological order – it’s a story from a life, so focus on key events, such as a career or relationship. If you’re tackling a longer life story, select up to 20 key life events and think about how you can link them to create a narrative. Before you start to write, do plenty of research. You might think you remember everything that’s happened, but look
back through old diaries and photographs, listen to music, or visit an old house or school to trigger memories. Decide on the structure and create summaries for each chapter before you start to write. Dialogue and vivid description are great, however, don’t get bogged down in unnecessary detail that slows down the narrative. And remember that a life story isn’t just about you, it’s about other people, so talk to parents, siblings and other key people for their take on events. However, penning and publishing a book can be daunting, so if you need help, a life story writing service like Memory Lane Books can interview you, write up your story in your own words and design a hardback book. With bad arthritis in her hands, Grace struggled to write her story so turned to the company for help. She adds: “I know that my family have now got a permanent record of my life and hope my book will become a family heirloom!”

Save the Sussex Beacon The Sussex Beacon is facing the prospect of closing services, including its ten-bed inpatient unit, following a reduction in the funding it receives from the NHS. Providing specialist support and care for people living with HIV through both inpatient and outpatient services, the Beacon helps hundreds of people in Sussex each year and was rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in September 2016. The Government must please ensure that sufficient funding is provided to the Sussex Beacon to enable it to continue providing all of its services both now and in future
Beacon’s inpatient unit had 233 admissions and was full for the majority of the year. It provided over 2,000 bed nights, relieving pressure on both health and social care services in Sussex. The more people who get behind this issue, the more likely it is that decision makers will pay attention. Every name added to the petition takes it one step closer to succeeding.
Why is this important? Can you help spread the word about the campaign by sharing it with your friends and family? The Sussex Beacon has already lost funding with further cuts likely to follow in the near future. The charity costs over £2 million a year to run and the Charity Trustees say they cannot continue to absorb these cuts. While many people living with HIV are now able to live long and healthy lives, there are still many who need specialist services. Last year The Sussex

22 • WEST SUSSEX HEATING
WEST SUSSEX HEATING After moving back into West Sussex nearly three years ago to give our young son a village upbringing, we’re now focused on growing our small family heating business in and around the area we love and now call home.
Jon, our managing director and lead engineer is originally from the area and grew up in and around Shoreham. Jon has worked in the industry for over 18 years, running his own successful plumbing & heating company for more than 15 years, during which time he also began to sub- contract boiler installations for British Gas. Still today we install up to 25 boilers a month for this renowned company, making us vastly experienced and exceptionally good at what we do and in 2013 we formed our own specialist heating company with the sole focus on installing brand new boilers & central heating systems on a daily basis. For every new boiler we install, we’re dedicated to quality workmanship and providing an exceptional service, at an affordable price. Who we are... We are West Sussex Heating Ltd, A local, family run business, fully insured & ‘Gas Safe’ registered. What we do... We are experts at installing brand new boilers and central heating systems. With our Managing Director having worked with British Gas for many years, we bring the skills, experience and standards of this renowned company to every project, just without the associated price tag.
Why we do it... In life, a comfortable and functional home is a necessity. We let you achieve this with our new boiler installations, providing you with ongoing warmth throughout the year. Whether you want a cosy night in during the deep mid winter, need a long, relaxing shower, or whilst ploughing through the dishes after a fun dinner party with friends, a high-quality boiler is absolutely essential. How we work... When it comes to your home, we know you expect the very best and that’s why we work so hard to provide the best service, which sees new boilers installed to the very highest standards. We also provide our customers with a fixed-price quote at the outset of the work, so you’ll never have to pay any hidden costs, or be liable for any extras. For us, the service we provide is as important as the quality of the boilers we install. Where we work... We’re based in Steyning, West Sussex and we’re pleased to serve customers throughout the county and all surrounding areas. 26 • FRENCH/ITALIAN DAY
French/Italian Day STEYNING – SUNDAY 2ND APRIL
Sunday April 2nd, 2017 is set to be a real “mix of national flags” event – French, Italian & British From 10.30 am until around 4pm, Steyning is set to welcome back the fabulous French Market, who will be crossing the Channel to bring us all things Franco – temptations such as French regional cheeses, freshly baked bread, a delicious range of patisserie products, olives, French sausages and cooked meats, strings of garlic and crepes with a variety of fillings cooked before your eyes, plus other hot take-away dishes. The non-foodie stalls will include handbags, hats, scarves, jewellery, French posters, giftware, clothing, Provencal soaps and much, much more. To add to the excitement at 2pm the roar of super cars will once again hit our High Street, when exotic Italian machines such as Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini, (and a smattering of other marques) will blast into town, resting for 45 minutes to give time for some serious drooling over the fantastic engines! These cars are some of the superb examples that will be on show during the Horsham Piazza Italia X Festival, which is held over the Easter weekend in Horsham Town Centre, but Steyning is having a very special preview! To add to the joy of this very special Sunday, why not make it extra delicious and treat yourself to coffee/tea or lunch within many of Steyning’s High Street cafes, restaurants & pubs. A wonderful day, in the beautiful English setting of Steyning just below the South Downs National Park – what a fantastic combination. A great outing for ALL the family – and definitely a hot date to put in your diary right now!
