WELLBEING SOLUTIONS DESIGN WHAT’S ATON 32 • 7• 7

WELLBEINGSOLUTIONS I would like to introduce myself to all of you who read ‘Village Living’. My name is Jérôme Petit and I’ve lived and worked in the area for over 10 years with my wife and two young children. So why am I here? I have an opportunity to talk about a subject that’s very close to my heart; wellness and natural health. This passion comes from my own personal experience of living with eczema and allergies since childhood. As I was growing up my parents tried every kind of treatment available from prescribed steroid creams to curative spa waters and even spiritual healers. These remedies worked temporarily but the eczema always returned. They eventually discovered toxic-free

natural products and a skin cream which provided genuine relief from the unbearable itching. I became intrigued by the power of plant ingredients and I began to learn more about their formidable healing properties. This in turn led me to a deeper understanding of the benefits of leading a holistic and healthy life-style. I would be the first to agree that adopting a completely natural, toxic-free lifestyle can be daunting, expensive and just too damn hard. Without a doubt, my everyday priorities are putting food on the table but I also want to ensure they have the best chance of being healthy and happy. In my experience, by taking baby steps, you will notice subtle but effective differences in your health, mood and energy levels. For this reason, I’m working with an international organisation who develop unique, award winning, high quality, and certified toxic-free products for healthy living in collaboration with world-renowned experts in the health, wellness and fitness industries. I hope to introduce everyone to the many ways of bringing clean, healthy living to your everyday lives. Jerome@wellbeingsolutions.co.uk

ROPETACKLE DESIGN WHAT’S ATON 32 • 9• 9

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF

ROPETACKLE Artists lined up include Band Aid’s Midge Ure, punk poet John Cooper Clarke, comedian Bridget Christie and jazz legend Courtney Pine. There will also be a series of free events including jazz, folk and ukulele afternoons, plus a free African dance workshop. To celebrate, a special anniversary brochure has been released where you can meet the team behind Ropetackle and hear from key figures who have played a part in the story so far. Artistic director and trustee Anne Hodgson said: “10 years ago the centre opened with no heating, no audiences and no money! Today, Ropetackle is an award-winning venue with a national reputation attracting audiences from all over the world.” The journey however has not always been smooth. In 2011 the centre almost closed due to a funding crisis but was saved by incredible public support. As such, Anne believes Ropetackle’s survival is “a triumph for all the community.” “This is reflected in the loyal audience support, the way the community generously responded to the 2011 appeal, and by the numerous volunteers who have worked tirelessly to create a welcoming, safe and secure environment for our audiences.” Marketing manager Mark Phillips added: “The anniversary is particularly significant because not many people realise Ropetackle is a charity staffed almost entirely by volunteers. Community lies at our heart.” For Shoreham resident and leading UK concert guitarist Richard Durrant: “Ropetackle represents the very best of what can be achieved by a bunch of determined locals.” He continued: “Ropetackle is something Sussex can be truly proud of. It is not just a thriving arts centre, but an inspiring miracle. Opened at the start of a crippling recession and initially greeted with scepticism, the volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly against staggering odds to create their own, very special success story.” Adding to this, pop icon Midge Ure – performing at the centre for a third time during the celebrations – said: “Playing at Ropetackle is always a delight. Venues like this are the lifeblood

Ropetackle Arts Centre in Shoreham is celebrating its 10th anniversary this April with a special month-long celebration of events featuring several high-profile performers.

of the music industry and it’s vitally important that they remain great places to play. Anne and her team always go the extra mile to make sure everyone has a great time!” For a 200 capacity venue, Ropetackle’s ability to punch above its weight is remarkable. In 2012 The Who frontman Roger Daltrey performed alongside bandmate Simon Townshend. In 2014 this year’s Brighton Festival guest director Kate Tempest launched her new book of poetry. And countless high-profile comedians have previewed their material over the years including Alan Carr, Jo Brand, Sean Lock and Romesh Ranganathan. Ropetackle regularly works with local artists too. Mark added: Goldie “In recent years we’ve developed our outreach programme, collaborating with local groups to engage the community. We’ve organised two successful ukulele festivals with Shoreham collective Uke @ The Duke, arranged workshops at local family centres with Brighton’s Long Nose Puppets, and for many years partnered with Shoreham Wordfest to deliver their annual literary festival. “Our recent project ‘A Band Anyone Can Join’ culminated in a free concert with local musicians, schools and other groups performing together on Shoreham’s Coronation Green. It was a great coming together for all the community.” Alongside the anniversary Ropetackle has also launched a fundraising appeal. Mark explained: “After 10 years some of our key equipment is now deteriorating and we need to raise £20,000 to cover the necessary upgrades. Our target is to reach this by the middle of May and we’ve organised a Race Night (May 6) and Silent Auction (May 13) in aid of this. We are also encouraging people to join our fantastic Friends scheme which will not only support the cause, but includes benefits such as priority booking. April is shaping up to be something very special at Ropetackle, and with events covering comedy, folk, jazz, pop, poetry, world music, dance, film and theatre, there is something for everyone to get involved and enjoy. National Bed Month Should your mattress stay or go?

It was National Bed Month in March. A time to consider the importance that a good night’s sleep can have on your overall health and well-being. However, despite spending more than half of our lives in bed, a study in 2015* revealed that 57% of us neglect to seek advice when purchasing a new mattress and it could be having a detrimental impact on our sleep and overall health.

has had its day – and night! It’s a two-minute-test that should be done every year after the first three to five years; and every six months after that. • Is the mattress seven years old or more? • Would it be embarrassing if neighbours saw it without its covers? • Does it make suspicious noises in the night?

The research by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), carried out in partnership with leading bed manufacturer, Sealy, found more than half of us do not seek professional advice when choosing a mattress. A massive 40% spend less than half an hour selecting this vital household item – shorter than the average power nap! In doing so, we’re putting our health at risk – an unsuitable mattress can contribute to back and neck pain, impacting on the quality of sleep we receive.

• Did you have your best recent night’s sleep in a bed other than yours?

Despite these health implications of having a good night’s rest, of the small percentage of people who do actually seek advice when buying a new mattress, the majority simply look online (16%) instead of speaking with a professional from the industry. Only 1% would consult with their neighbours, 4% discuss with friends and just 9% seek guidance from a qualified chiropractor.

• Does it feel lumpy in the night?

Mark Jones, a BCA member from Well Adjusted Health said: “People don’t realise just how important a suitable bed and mattress is for their back. We all come in different weights, shapes and sizes so, given we spend a third of our lives in bed, it makes sense to find the best possible bed to give the optimum level of support and comfort. “We recommend you spend as much time as possible choosing a new bed or mattress – and try it out before you buy it! Chiropractors generally recommend that you should sleep on your back or side and when lying on your side, your spine should be parallel to the mattress and not be sagging or bowing.” The Sleep Council’s simple bed MOT (Mattress Obsolescence Test) can help to determine if your bed

• Are you waking up more frequently unrefreshed and aching? • Do you and your partner roll towards each unintentionally in the middle of the night? • Do you have enough space to sleep comfortably? • Is it sagging? • Is the bed too small to give an undisturbed night’s sleep? • Is the divan or base uneven or sagging? If you answer ‘Yes’ to three questions, you’re not getting the best possible night’s sleep. Five or more ‘Yes’ answers and it’s time to buy a new bed. Advice on safeguarding back health when choosing a new bed or mattress can be found on the BCA website http://bit.ly/posturebed. At Well Adjusted Health we have an analysis machine called SAM – (Spinal Analysis Machine) this is a great way to assess and visually check exactly what your posture is doing and where it is out. If you would like some further information or advice please call us for a no obligation chat. If you have a specific question regarding any pain or problem areas, or would like to book a Free 15 minute consultation for you or your family please call Well Adjusted Health on 01903 892171.

FUNK THE FAMILY: SUNDAY 18TH DESIGN JUNE WHAT’S 2017 ATON 32 • 17 • 17

Following three hugely successful festivals, Funk The Family return with their exceptional recipe of high quality music, fantastic entertainment and, this year, a promise that all family activities are free! Tons of drop-in family workshops, shows and activities are on offer, with many more still being announced. Meanwhile the festival team have confirmed a special two-hour DJ set by Jazzie B of Soul II Soul and a spectacular performance from London’s 34-piece House Gospel Choir, singing much-loved house and electronic tracks – from classic Frankie Knuckles to upfront Disclosure. Then there’s the brilliant jump-up jungle-meets-jazz Queen Jenna & The G’s, self-styled “chap hop” lyricist Professor Elemental, Rowlf The Dog on jazz piano, Brighton School of Samba, Soul Casserole DJs, the Baby Loves Disco crew and many, many more. All the music is carefully selected by FTF founder, ex music journalist and mother, Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small. Her aim is to create an environment for the whole family to enjoy – so expect a credible and danceable soundtrack. When it comes to activities, this year team FTF are pulling out all the stops, having so far confirmed fencing (yes with real swords!) from the Golden Lotus crew, family trapeze workshops on The Circus Project’s giant outdoors rig, yoga with Tree of Life, non-stop circus shows inside the Cirque Du Funk big top, Axe & Paddle’s bush craft workshops and a brand new story tent with illustrators and authors (Nick Sharratt, Guy Parker-Rees and

Abie Longstaff) carefully selected by The Book Nook, rap workshops and much more – all in the beautiful, easily accessible setting of Hove Park and all included in the ticket price! Plus kids get to DJ with the Stick It On crew, there’s slackline and diablo workshops from Mad-0-Zak -a brilliant character of Brighton Laines’, the brand new Reptylers’ ‘exotic creatures’ animal handling, Pro Direct Soccer Academy and Corin The Music Man’s shows and recycled instrument making. Meanwhile the Amazing Art Cart are embracing the festival’s theme for 2017 – “Mythical Creatures”– by helping kids create bespoke masks. This year Funk The Family falls on Father’s Day, Sunday 18th June, and the team are busy planning some pampering treats just for papas too. Plus the festival are proudly supporting Whoopsadaisy – Brighton & Hove’s charity for children with cerebral palsy and motor disorders. Local produce will, as ever, serve organic, vegan and glutenfree options, encompassing everything from Mexican street food to traditional British fish n chips, with the introduction of an additional ‘Connoisseur’s Bar’, serving carefully selected and local craft beers and cocktails. Accelerating from 1,000 attendees at the first event at Hove Lagoon in 2014 to 5000 attendees at Hove Park in 2016, the stunning all-day festival site celebrates its 4th annual event at Hove Park – the only festival currently located in these beautiful, tree-lined grounds – less than a 10-minute walk from Hove mainline railway station. Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small, FTF founder and director: “Funk The Family Festival has succeeded by giving families a gorgeous, easily accessible day-time festival with exceptional music, food and activities, all without the hassle of camping.” Early Bird advance tickets have already sold out but a limited number of ‘Tier 3’ discounted tickets are still available. Outsidein It only seems like yesterday I was telling you to drag yourselves back in to your homes, now it’s Spring and I’m telling you to get outside and bring a little bit of that outside back in with you. and wicker or hemp for lampshades and rugs. Avoid the usual man made products as they just simply won’t flow in the room.

The interior design movement of bringing the ‘outside in’ is still huge and in the words of people with far more Twitter followers then I; still very much ‘on trend’! If you would like to create your own outside inside room within your home, it is very simple to achieve and to make it even simpler I have put together some simple guidelines for you;

Natural light is an important element of this scheme and it does work best in rooms with large windows, where you can see the great outdoors you are trying to bring in. Make sure any window treatments you put up are light, simple and sheer. Finally, when you dress your outside in room do so with well-placed pieces plucked from nature such as plants, wood, seashells and pebbles. These pieces will be a lot more meaningful and give your room a lot more character than anything shop bought. If you are feeling really adventurous with this scheme you could even build a living wall.

Use colours that have drawn their inspiration from nature, we are talking greens, yellows, blues and neutral tones. Greenery is pantones colour of the year this year, 2017, so it will be very easy to find those colour palettes on the high street today. When considering textiles and floor coverings choose natural products; wood or coir carpeting for the floor

If you have fallen head over heels in love with this room scheme, I suggest really going with it and start investigating your chosen materials further sourcing only eco-friendly products. The end product will be a beautiful natural room that’s kind to nature. Perfect!
