What makes you feel

happy & content?

Is it the sun? Is it more daylight? Listening to the birds singing their dawn chorus? (maybe not this one at 4.45am perhaps!!) Is it looking up at the sky and noticing the passing clouds? Is it your job or your family? Is it just being there for another human being? Is it looking around, smelling and seeing or maybe even touching the plants and trees – the early morning honeysuckle or freshly cut grass maybe? Is it a special person in your life, or is it an animal – your dog, cat, fish, horse, hamster – whatever animal you live with or have contact with daily? Or maybe it’s just waking up in the morning to a new day...

W

hatever it is that defines happiness in your world is different from what defines happiness in anyone else’s… because every single person’s idea of happiness is singular to them, their culture, background and frame of reference. And we can’t all go around being happy all the time can we, because that’s not “real” life? Or maybe we can if we think of happiness as a form of contentment... something to work towards at least! So my suggestion to you is to look and think of happiness and contentment as daily choices that I believe we sometimes forget we even have a say in!! I know I do, until I catch myself. We can actually choose to be happy as much as we can choose to be unhappy. We can choose to be content as much as we can choose to be discontent. Hard to believe isn’t it when you think of what life brings daily and the emotional ebb and flow that comes with it. Situations might come at us and we could become angry, upset or even joyous... but this is where the spin comes in. It is a psychological fact that our thinking hijacks us into believing something in a certain way, subsequently affecting

how our bodies respond. That’s why two people may react in very different ways to the same or a similar situation. What happens is that we have become so unconsciously conditioned, adapted and used to thinking and behaving one way that it has become a habit.... so our automatic reactions become habits… however, we do know that habits can be broken. I can “happily” and honestly tell you that we do all have a choice, even if as you read this article you don’t think you do… we can choose how to respond, behave or think in a completely different way, but it takes effort. Noticing the small things around us at first helps. If we take a moment to think before we react and then behave, this can calm our thinking (and nervous system) and give us breathing space to make different choices. From this space we can choose to be happy and content!! My invitation to you is to find something simple around you that might evoke a feeling of contentment. Take a moment to absorb what happens, allow and see if whatever it is you have chosen puts a smile on your face. Notice how this feels, then allow that process to become part of your daily routine towards even a little more happiness and contentment.

FUNDS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR NEW CANCER NURSES AND FACILITIES AT THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, BRIGHTON Teenage Cancer Trust is calling for help to raise urgently needed funds to expand the support it offers so that no young person in Sussex faces cancer alone. Every year, around 2,500 13 to 24 year olds are diagnosed with cancer UK-wide. Teenage Cancer Trust currently has a specialist cancer unit at The Royal Marsden in Surrey which can be accessed by young people with cancer in the Brighton area, however some young people may choose to have their treatment closer to home. Developing services in local hospitals gives young people and their families a better choice of where to have their care and support in an ageappropriate environment. To offer this choice to young people and their families in Sussex, the charity has launched a partnership with The Royal Alexandra Children’s hospital and urgently needs to raise funds to improve the facilities that local young people with cancer use. Teenage Cancer Trust’s design team are working with the hospital team and patients on Level 9 and are planning to refurbish a bedroom and a bathroom where local young cancer patients spend time when having treatment to ensure young people feel more comfortable. The improvements are designed to make sure the space is welcoming and homely for young people with cancer. With the help of local supporters, the improvements will be provided by Teenage Cancer Trust as part of the roll-out of their new Nursing & Support Service in the area, and will ensure that young people can receive the specialist care they need wherever they live. The charity is calling for continued support to maintain the service locally for years to come. Louise Scott, Regional Fundraising Manager for Teenage Cancer Trust in the South East, said: “Teenage Cancer Trust relies on donations to fund all of our vital work. Many local young people with cancer are facing it alone. This must change, but we can’t do it alone and need help to raise much needed funds. “Our partnership with the amazing team at The Royal Alexandra hospital will make local young patients feel more comfortable and supported during their cancer journey. We’re calling on the local community to get behind us and help us make it happen.” The new Nursing & Support Service will see Teenage Cancer Trust working in partnership with other NHS hospitals across South East” Teenage Cancer Trust Nurses develop and provide the best possible clinical care and play a vital role in shaping the care

of young people with cancer. They also offer one to one support for young people and their families, and work with the patient’s local clinical team to address their specific needs. They understand the challenges of dealing with cancer as a young person and specialise in the best treatment for the cancers that affect this age group, providing thoughtful, sensitive, specialist support. As the service develops, more hospitals may also become involved. By working within these NHS teams in partnership with local hospitals, the charity hopes to ensure all young people with cancer aged 13 to 24 get the age-appropriate care, advice, information and one-to-one support they need. Some of the enhancements offered to local hospitals by Teenage Cancer Trust often include: • Enhancing the look and feel of hospital bedrooms, bathrooms, social spaces and/or shared areas with bright and modern wall glamour designed to give spaces a more homely feel. • Providing mobile Wi-Fi for young people to have access to the internet to help combat isolation. • Providing a great audio visual trolley which includes games consoles, TV with movies and IT tech to help keep young people occupied during long stays. • Contemporary and comfy furniture and fixtures to make areas feel less clinical. To get involved, you can: • Hold a fundraising event at work, school, college or in your local community • Chose us as your next Sussex Charity of the Year partner • Sign up to Walk, Run, Cycle or Swim in a Teenage Cancer Trust Challenge event • Contact the South East team to discuss other ways you would like to be involved by emailing: hello@teenagecancertrust.org Teenage Cancer Trust relies on donations to fund our vital work. Find out more, get involved or make a donation at www.teenagecancertrust.org. Teenage Cancer Trust is a registered charity: 1062559 (England & Wales), SC039757 (Scotland).

Insideout

In March of this year I let you know that one of the big trends for 2017 was bringing the outside in. With summer finally here and temperatures hitting new highs we are all out desperately trying to spruce up our gardens in time for the annual BBQ and the big trend of 2017 garden furniture is taking the inside out! So what exactly does taking the inside out mean? It means making your outside living areas as comfortable as your inside, in the literal sense your outside space becomes an extension of your home living. Instead of uncomfortable chairs and tables that used to be forced upon you and your guests at any garden party with not a lot of choice out there, retailers and designers are now keeping up with our want to spend time outside. So this summer pick comfortable room set-ups for your outside space; sofas, coffee tables, pillows and blankets are a must! There are two key styles for your outside furniture that you should consider this year. The first we are calling ‘cool coastal’ and the second is ‘retro comfort’. With ‘Cool Coastal’ think washed out colours, whites, blues, creams, with a nod to the seaside but not gimmicky. Lighting is also important with this theme, large candle holders’ in glass or wicker would work great, as would hanging lights. Keeping to the taking your inside outside theme, the cooking area outside is no longer just a small kettle BBQ, this year take the time to build an outside cooking area. We are talking, bar areas, worktops, cupboards, fridges’ – everything you have in your home kitchen try to recreate in your outside space.

If you prefer the sound of ‘Retro Comfort’ for your outside space, you’re in for a treat as one of the pieces that would like great is a wicker swinging chair, so very comfortable and a clear nod to the 70s! To complete this theme, add lots of colour, textures and choose pieces with a mid-century shape. High street retailer Next currently have some great pieces in this theme available.

Most important when designing your outside space is of course is to have fun and give yourself time to enjoy it!

Honey & Lemon Chicken Skewers

RECIPE • 25

DON’T BE SCARED OF THE BARBIE! My barbecue is hotting up and these little gems are a delightfully different and easy way to do chicken. Marinade: • Olive oil • Honey • Balsamic vinegar • English mustard • A dash of ketchup Dice the chicken and then cut the mushrooms and onions into a similar size and let them marinade for at least an hour. Before their marinade time is up, cut a lemon into chunks and add this to the marinading chicken. I tend not to add lemon to chicken marinades till the end of the process as the acid in the lemon can cook the chicken and leave it slightly tough. Then skewer the pieces onto a wooden stick and place on the barbecue, turning frequently. A nice tip here is to soak your wooden skewers in a tub of water for 10mins before you BBQ them and then they wont burn so quickly! Eat and of course, enjoy!

LOSE WEIGHT BYGETTING HEALTHIER Summer will be upon us soon and yet again the race against time to fit into our summer clothes has started. I want to share some tips with you that I picked up from talking to Barbara Cox who is an award winning business woman as well as a nutritional therapist and health columnist for several high street magazines. Barbara explained to me that a detox diet is necessary to lose weight; diet of fresh vegetables, good fats and clean proteins alongside vitamin and mineral supplementation will gently break down any ‘mucoid plaque’ that has built up in the lining of our stomach due to pollution and chemicals absorbed through our skin and ingested from non-organic foods.

When we heal and soothe the lining of our gut it becomes easier to absorb the nutrition and goodness from our normal day-to-day diets. In this way we will find it easier to be in control of our weight. As part of the detox you may want to reduce or stop gluten, dairy and sugar. When choosing a healthy snack or meal replacement, try to avoid soy or whey protein. Instead, you may want to choose a good protein such as edamame beans or cranberries. If you want to have a shake as part of your detox try to aim for a product that is 100% gluten-free, dairy-free, soya-free, without GMOS’s and artificial sweeteners or preservatives. Ensure that you include fibre, probiotics and prebiotics in your daily diet and superfoods such as pomegranates, okra, acerola, acai berry, mangosteen [most commonly found in capsules or juice in the UK] to name a few. There are proven healthy and natural solutions out there and I would be delighted to discuss your needs and objectives and provide you with a bespoke solution.
