Here we go again—after 4 highly acclaimed Food & Drink Festivals staged within the Steyning area, the Steyning & District Community Partnership Visitors & Tourism Group are up and running for their fifth event! It will be staged from 2nd September to 8th October 2017. As before it is being run under the umbrella of the Horsham Food & Drink Festival, which has been successfully organised by HDC for many years. The Festival has received awesome support from the local businesses who have come forward with a range of outstanding special offers, together with some fantastic events. We do not have room within this article to list all of the fun events on offer, but to give you a taster they include: Our wonderful Farmers’ Market—Sussex Food & Drink Awards 2014/2015 Best Sussex Farmers’ Market winners — will both open the Festival on 2nd September and close it on 7th October. The market will include a variety of fun events including cooking demonstrations, Ready, Steady, Cook sessions and the October Pumpkin Weight – plus of course, the usual superb selection of food & drink stalls. Our 2017 Festival charity is the Chestnut Tree House Hospice for Children and during the 4 weeks, different venues in the area will be holding a series of Breakfast/Lunch/Pizza moments to raise money for this worthwhile cause, plus the main charity event, the Safari Dinner, which will be staged in 4 different eateries in Steyning. Please look out for the dates that support Chestnut Tree House, and try and come along to help us raise a great contribution to this much loved charity. Our star event must be the Italian Extravaganza, when Gennaro Contaldo, celebrity Chef & author – best known, perhaps, for the BBC series, Two Greedy Italians – will be joining the evening’s guests for Prosecco, dinner, an interview about his interesting and varied life plus a personal signing of his book, “Passione”. For our beer lovers, Roger Protz, staunch real ale campaigner and editor of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide, will also be visiting for a beer tasting event, plus book signing. To add to the beer theme, there will be a 3-day Beer Festival organised by Adur Brewery and Riverside Brewery & held at the Steyning Cricket Club. Our unique Cobblestone Walk, will be holding a Family Foodie Fun Day – something for all the family to enjoy. Two “firsts” for the Festival – a Great Steyning Festival Bake Off – a chance to show off your home cooking and win a prize; plus the Tasty Cycle Ride, which will be organised by Stan’s Bike Shack and the Brighton Excelsior Cycling Club, with a BBQ to welcome your back after all that pedalling. Also on the agenda, different walks taking in the South Downs National Park, Farm Walk, Birds at Dawn Walk, Pubs & Brewery History Walk and Ashurst Tasty Walk. Workshops & demonstrations including such subjects as Hedgerow Booze, Perfume Making, Wreath Making & Edible Flowers and their use within cooking. These events are just the tip of the iceberg – take a peep at our website to catch up on more of the exciting dates you should be adding to your diary – there are over 50 from which to choose. Prior booking is essential for most of the “eating out” events.
Under our Harvest Festival banner: Three of our local churches have events arranged to co-incide with their Harvest Festival services. Also, for the third year, the Best Allotment Competition will take place, covering allotments in Steyning & Upper Beeding. Who will be our Champion this year? Derek Crush from Daylands Farm – and expert in all things rural – will judge. Turning to our Festival Offers, they include: free bottles/glasses of wine; discount on wine/meals; free desserts; discounts on cookery courses; discounts within shops; free cups of coffee; free sweeties; special offer lunch & dinner and buy one, get another product free – there is just so much to take on board. To find out full details of both the offers and events, you need to look out for a copy of the official Horsham Food & Drink Festival Guide, which is widely distributed within the Horsham area, plus of course, being available in the businesses taking part in Steyning, Bramber, Upper Beeding, Small Dole, Edburton, Ashurst & Wiston. As most participants will request sight of the official programme before you can take up their offer, it is quite important to get hold of one of those programmes! During the final week of the Festival (week commencing 2nd October), there will be a Best Food Theme Shop Window competition – prizes being sponsored by the Steyning & District Business Chamber. Our Judge this year is Julia Donaldson, celebrated author of many children’s books, with perhaps, Gruffalo being her most famous character. All shops are encouraged to participate – not just “foodie” establishments – so for sure there will be some interesting “creations” to come and view and make your decisions, before the official judging, which will take place at 11 a.m. on the 7th October 2017. To find out more details of all the offers and events, visit www.steyningdistrictfooddrinkfestival.co.uk Apart from thanking all the local businesses for taking part, overwhelming and sincere thanks must go to the sponsors, as without their financial support none of this could have happened. They are: Horsham District Council, Steyning & District Business Chamber, Steyning & District Community Partnership, Steyning Parish Council, Compass Mortgages, Osborn Humphreys & Wiston Estate Winery. Steyning & District very much look forward to welcoming you ALL to their fantastic Food & Drink Festival. It’s a real fun 4 weeks – we enjoy it, and we hope you will too!

Stress & Trauma
How do they really affect us? Whilst our minds don’t remember everything at a conscious level (there’s just too much information being taken in minute by minute), our subconscious mind, brain and our body really do “keep hold” of everything that has happened to us…
I
have just read an amazing book called The Body Keeps the Score by the psychologist Bessel van der Kolk, which goes into so much depth about how our bodies and minds really do hold the minutiae of our lives from the outset and how this affects us emotionally and physically long-term. He reconfirmed my clinically experienced and already held belief that from the moment we are conceived and begin growing in our mother’s womb we can be affected by external factors – some kind of shock, disturbance, accident, pain or a form of distress – which subsequently becomes part of our internal characteristics and physiology. I have worked with clients who have, unbeknown to them until we worked together and started looking to the root cause of their anxiety and self esteem issues, suffered from gestational trauma (shock). This leads me to the belief that children really are a product of their childhood in so many ways. As a young child something may happen that has a profound effect, shifting the perspective of that child’s world to change it forever. Children just do not have the same mental capacity as we adults do to process traum, and I believe this is something that we as parents sometimes forget. Their brains haven’t grown or developed enough yet and their frame of reference to the world is so small that even being called names in the playground and being made fun of, or having a teacher not understand, or repeatedly not listen to them properly can change everything for them – can shift their world and how their mind and body deals with stress responses forever…. So think how a child’s frame of reference would develop if something even more traumatic were happening either around them, or if something happened to them? Children don’t always know how to show or verbalise how they feel –
what’s going on in their world (frame of reference). They may act-up, “behave badly”, maybe having a temper tantrum or going quiet. This behaviour can continue or escalate, even after the trauma (whatever that may be) has gone away. Don’t forget, what may seem okay, not okay, or even stressful to us adults, is going to mean something very different to a child. I have worked with clients who have suffered various childhood, adolescent and or adult traumas in many different guises, and whilst I fully accept and agree that growing up is also about becoming desensitised to our environment, imagine if there were continuously distressing (traumatic) situations happening all the time in your child’s early lives? How do you as the adult cope in stressful situations? Then think about how your child might cope… my clinical experience is that they will be anxious, unconsciously become hyper-vigilant (tense and on high alert), which in turn will put stress on their physical systems and potentially cause long-term anxiety issues and in some instances ill health. This can lead to teenagers struggling to articulate what’s happening to them “inside”. Fear of not being good enough, or not fitting into what is expected from peers and parents all has a profound effect... not being listened to, or not feeling understood and then “acting up”. Any single or repeated trauma over the course of our lives can change our bodies response and physiology long-term, manifesting at any time to leave us feeling unable to cope with the world as we experience it. Each person’s physiology “feels” and “keeps” their experiences “held” within according to their life history. So I wonder... what does your body hold and how does it affect you?

58 Boxes in Shoreham | Unique, Fair trade Products at Affordable Prices! A Brief Introduction The story started in Thailand with the purchase of a large, bronze Thai gong. The quality of sound and beauty of this one amazing piece started my mind wondering. "Wow, so many stunning, handmade items are available in this village and such talented people designing and making them. I wonder if I can do business with this community?” After my first shipment of handmade products and three or four years selling at gift and craft events around the UK, I began receiving some really positive feedback regarding quality and price. So I finally decided to start this little shop in Brunswick Road, Shoreham. The products are priced very affordably, which we often hear said from our customers. The reason why our products are so much less expensive than our competitors is simple. We buy directly from the people who make them. We deal in Fair Trade so we work with small family run businesses and some very talented individuals. In this way we do our bit in supporting communities around the world.
Dirty Oven?
We are now offering a Zen painting commission service which gives our customers the opportunity to have a beautiful original Zen style, acrylic painting on canvas made to their specific taste and size. LOST INTEREST IN BANKS?
It has been quite a year already – Brexit, the shock General Election result, ongoing terrorism, the tragic Grenfell tower block disaster. Oh, and the British weather – four different seasons in the space of a few weeks. Perhaps it is understandable that we have been pre-occupied with what is happening nationally, and not paying much attention to our finances.
Retirement Planning Getting to grips with the new Pensions Freedoms can seem daunting, but the basic message is that the old days of retiring at age 65 and automatically locking in to an annuity are over. There is now much greater flexibility in when and how one takes one’s retirement benefits and ‘Income Drawdown’ is established as a firm favourite with the public. Many individuals are now exchanging the benefits from a defined benefit occupational pension scheme for a very generous transfer value into a personal scheme. Specialised independent advice is needed and this step may not be suitable for everyone, but for some there will be advantages.
Cash ISAs With interest rates still languishing at near zero and the Bank of England still cautious on any rises, these represent a poor investment. Inflation, currently 2.7% and rising, means that the real value of your ISA’s purchasing power is being eroded. There are several lower risk Investment ISA alternatives on the
Near

market which may be suitable and an important benefit of the latter is the regular income facility – this can be an excellent way of supplementing pension income. Most people acquire various investment and other contracts ‘piecemeal’ during their working lives, without any real centralised strategy. Our advisers now use excellent online ‘Retirement Modellers’, which can tell you how much needs to be invested on a monthly basis to generate a specific monetary pension at a specific age; they are excellent in providing ‘what if’ type scenarios. For independent advice, please give us a call at The Mellor Practice on 01903 882007. We offer a preliminary consultation at our own expense, at a time and place convenient to you.

Annie Murray from AMSite Design offers affordable, mobile optimised websites, designed to grow your business online.
Annie’s Story I have been doing freelance website development, both brochureware and e-commerce, for five years with a portfolio of clients spanning multiple industries ranging from wholesale, retail sales, training/consultancy, sports and leisure. I have a BA (Hons) degree from Brighton University and RSA qualifications in PA/secretarial skills. As a post-graduate, I worked in the IT Financial Services industry as both a consultant and software engineer for many years. After a small career break whilst having a family, I decided to retrain by attending a WordPress course (Content Management System). Alongside building websites, I also work part-time for a training consultancy firm called RTPC Ltd, working as a Client Relationship Manager. My primary responsibilities include website development and maintenance, bookkeeping, event organising and liaising with clients with regards to programme delivery. After gaining experience back in the workplace and designing/building websites for a number of small businesses, I decided to set up AMSite Design in September 2016. My main objective was to focus on creating stunning, contemporary looking responsive websites which were affordable for small businesses. I created my own website and Facebook business page, got business cards produced and started to advertise both on social media and locally in magazines. Since then, I have been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work on many websites. AMSite Design allows me to work flexibly whilst looking after my family. It also gives me the opportunity to meet different clients and work on a variety of projects. That variety keeps the role of website design/development exciting. Looking to the future, my objectives include growing the business and keeping up to date with current trends by attending further courses regularly. This will therefore allow me to continue to enhance the website services that AMSite Design offers.
AMSite Design offers Bespoke Design Based upon your requirements and budget, AMSite Design will work with you to create a professional website and great web experience which will allow you to grow your business.

Salted Caramel UPSIDE DOWN BANANA CAKE
Still on my salted caramel trip I was thinking about how I could use it in a cake that could handle it without being way too sickly sweet, and the bananas that were sitting on the bowl opposite my desk were my inspiration… in fact I’ve kept the cake freakishly simple by using my classic banana loaf recipe, left out the sultanas and nuts but added something special slathered on its bottom…
For the cake • 8oz self-raising flour • 4oz butter or margarine • 4oz soft brown sugar • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 2 ripe bananas – mashed
Place the flour, butter and sugar in a bowl and crumble together with your hands, sprinkle in the cinnamon and stir. Pour over the mashed bananas and beaten eggs and then beat it all together with a wooden spoon, it will quickly loosen nicely. Line your tin with parchment paper… I simply cut the paper to size and then scrunch it into a ball, then once smoothed out it is easy to fit into the tin.
• 2 large eggs – beaten
Place the caramel into a small pan and gently heat it until it is liquid and bubbly and pour this into the bottom of the lined tin.
For the caramel topping
Cut your bananas into slices… I tried both length ways and sideways and they both look good… and place these on top of the caramel, then gently pour in the batter to the tin.
• 3 tablespoons salted caramel • 2 not so ripe bananas
Bake on 170C for 40 mins or until risen and golden… let the cakes cool slightly before turning them upside down on a plate to reveal the caramel bottoms!
This recipe works for 1 regular loaf tin or two mini tins
Eat and of course, enjoy!

INTERIORS • 21
Timetolounge You say lounge I say living room, but whatever you call it now is the time to reclaim it as the relaxing family room it should be... Over the Summer the living room in everyones home becomes a neglected space, used for mere storage of half drunk cups of cool lemonade, sandy shoes and things going into the boot of the car ready for a day at the beach. Now is the time to load that dishwasher, chuck the beach stuff in to the car and put those darn shoes back where they belong on the rack! Whilst you are kicking these bad habits out of your room its, unfortunately, time to kick some interior trends out with them; say a big 2017 goodbye to the uniform look, the cluttered look, floor lights and (sorry about this one) good bye technology! Take a look around at what you have left to work with and prepare to make some changes that will make you fall in love with your living room all over again.
game. No, I’m not joking, this is not a drill, I have done my research and people have become bored with being faced with TV and technology every second of every day, so the desire to be technology free has reached the family room. Is this the beginning of TVs becoming old fashioned articles? Saying goodbye to your floorlights and the cluttered look living room is all part of giving your room the much coverted minimalist look that is very much still in fashion.
Replace your TV, which most living rooms are centered on, with a modern fireplace that you can gather friends and family around for a lovely parlour
The uniform look being considered outdated has made way to a much more exciting and interesting ecclectic style that can include geometric patterns, different types of natural woods and marble accents. Good luck reclaming your living room!
