STEYNING GRAMMAR SCHOOL STUDENT TOBY BLOOMFIELD IS SUSSEX TENNIS ACE! Toby Bloomfield, a Steyning Grammar School student in Year 8, is currently ranked ‘Tennis Number 1’ in Sussex in the Under 14 age group. This is a noteworthy achievement since this age group covers boys a year older than he is. He has received County Colours for the last 4 years, and will be awarded them again this year, following his recent performance leading Sussex at the National County Cup. Toby trains at the Pavilion & Avenue Tennis Club, both with his coach, Ben Reeves, and in the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) performance squads there. He also attends regional tennis training camps at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton. He has been lucky enough to train alongside the Davis Cup team there and, last time, alongside Johanna Konta and Heather Watson. Toby is having an outstanding season so far. He won a Regional Level LTA tournament in Tunbridge Wells at Easter, in both U14s singles and doubles. At half-term, he competed in a Regional Level LTA tournament at Seaford, where he not only won the U14s boys singles, but also the U16s boys singles (this age group comprises boys at least 3 years older than him), bringing accolades from the LTA coaches. Toby’s next big tournament will be the Nationals which take place in Bath, in July, which he admits will be a challenge. He remarks: “I know it will be tough at the Nationals playing boys at least a year older than me, but I’m hoping for a good draw, and I’m definitely up for it!” Headteacher Mr Nick Wergan said: “Toby is a superb ambassador for our school, and we wish him every success in the Nationals. He is certainly a talent to watch out for in the future.” Toby has great ambitions to continue training at a top level. He said: “In the future, I’d like to go to University in America to play tennis.” Mr Luke Talbot, Head of Physical Education at Steyning Grammar School said: “As a school we are incredibly proud of Toby and his achievements. To be able to balance his academic and sporting demands takes a lot of organisation and self-control. We are also impressed with how he has demonstrated grit and a growth mindset to succeed and act as a role model to others.”

Marketing for your Business The simplest explanation of marketing is that it is creating an arena in which to make a sale. There is a wide array of different marketing methods in which this arena can be created and these broadly split down into two areas which are: •T raditional Marketing – These are all the marketing methods that have been used for hundreds of years including areas such as printed materials, printed advertising, television and radio advertising, editorial, printed brochures, mailshots, and many more •D igital Marketing – This is a new form of marketing which has developed rapidly over the last 20 years but provides much more direct access to your target market and includes all digital items of marketing such as websites, social media, pay per click and website advertising, electronic brochures, email shots, etc… Choosing the correct marketing method and / or combination of methods is challenging and in digital marketing narrowing this down to the correct platforms and the correct use of digital marketing requires careful planning and understanding. In order for your marketing to be successful you must first understand your target market, your demographic, the people and businesses that you want to reach. In order to understand this before commencing any major marketing activities market research is required to understand both your market and your competitors. For larger businesses this often takes the form of the beginnings of a marketing plan, for smaller businesses this often involves some online research. Once you understand who you want to reach you need to make sure that you position your business correctly. Positioning is the internal and external perception of your business and you need to ensure that your brand, your message and your behaviour all represents how you want your business to be perceived, if you get this wrong your target audience may not even realise you are trying to communicate with them.

any number of things but a few examples are: • Increasing Brand Awareness • Driving Traffic to your website • Getting people to pick up the phone to you Once you have set your goal you can match the marketing method to the goal, for example for a business to customer business a Facebook campaign is a very good way of driving traffic to your website. For business to business Linkedin may be a better platform. Once you have commenced your marketing it is important to understand how successful you have been, and there are many tools to measure this success and then modify your activities accordingly.

Once you understand who you are looking to contact and you have positioned your business correctly, the key to successful marketing is setting goals and choosing marketing methods that will achieve these goals. Goals can be

12 • RECIPE

Pineapple, Cucumber, & Celery Juice It’s quite amazing how, for such a subtle little vegetable, the cucumber really packs a punch when juiced... and celery! Celery is my new love. It’s good for joint pain, arthritis and when blended the taste rocks. We spent many a late afternoon lounging by the pool in Mallorca drinking this exact juice and it is divine. The bar that we frequented and served these delicious smoothies named it the ‘Diuretic’ which isn’t the most glamorous of names but I guess does what it says on the tin... The pineapple and apple are enough fruit to take it out of that dodgy ‘vegetable juice’ zone and the lime perks the whole thing up. Plus I learn that pineapple is great for depression and who doesn’t need the endorphins perking up every now and again? Serves 2 Half a medium pineapple – peeled and cut into chunks Half a regular cucumber (a pre-packed cucumber portion) or roughly 6 inches – cut into chunks 1 stick of celery – cut into chunks 1 green apple – cored and cut into chunks The juice of one lime A little ice and a little water Place the whole lot in the blender and whizz – not really much of a method to this but I feel the need to write something here at least... you may want to add more water at the end and blend again. As you can see from the photo I’ve kept mine quite thick but more ice or water should loosen it up a little. Drink and of course, enjoy!

16 • RETROESQUE

This month we are delighted to introduce to you Victoria Clifford the retro beauty behind RetroEsque! As you know I am a massive fan of anything and everything vintage, and am thrilled to find a site, a one stop shop site where you can pick and choose everything all in one place. I had a lovely chat with Victoria about her business and what inspired her to set up RetroEsque and why… Victoria has always had a love of vintage and retro, particularly inspired by her Aunt who was always an image of Marilyn Monroe, with her platinum blonde hair and effortless glamour and beauty, when her Aunt passed away too soon, Victoria really felt the inspiration to take the risk and pursue a dream, life is so precious and short and we should embrace it, and thus the idea of setting up a shop with a vintage theme was born... RetroEsque has purely been created to share Victoria’s love of vintage, hosting a selection of clothing, shoes and accessories, all with a reminiscent theme of times gone by. The brands stocked all have their own take on Pin-up, Rockabilly, Retro and Vintage apparel, and you are sure to find that style that appeals to you. Including brands such as; BANNED, Hearts & Roses London, HELL BUNNY, Lindy Bop, Pamela Mann, and Irregular Choice. Please do let Victoria know if there is a particular brand that you favour and she will do her best to stock and supply. The site itself is incredibly comprehensive and easy to use, with a handy size chart for each supplier and basically a one stop shop for everyone, and I really mean everyone, whatever size you are, to look and feel vintage-ly beautiful. Everything you need for a one off outfit from head

to toe including hair pieces, handbags, stockings, belts, dresses, petticoats and of course… Shoes. The prices are affordable and thought through based upon what is realistic and what Victoria herself would pay for an item or outfit. Victoria is going to be very busy with events so get your orders in place, ready for Goodwood Revival and Dawn Gracie’s Vintage Weekender (which RetroEsque will be attending) Don’t forget to watch this space for details on the shop opening this autumn in Horsham! I literally cannot rave about this site enough; it is perfect, absolutely spot on from the vintage connoisseur who knows what they are looking for to the retro newbie looking for a one off item. Thanks to Victoria for her beautiful front cover image and her fabulous site, we wish her every success! www.retroesqueuk.com 07889 777 312 info@retroesqueuk.com

Being A Super-Mum Or Super-Parent And The Stress That Comes With It… It’s that time of year again. Regardless of how old your children are, as the school summer holidays approach, do you start to feel panicky, get excited or have a mixture of both??

H

ave your kids been doing exams and has the house been fraught with tension that will soon be over? (pending results). How do you as parents manage the juggle of childcare and working on any given day, let alone the school holidays? I don’t know about you, but I loved the pressure being off with not having to do the school run, or the frantic dashes to and from after-school clubs, and I loved having my son at home, but I also had to keep working. So the pressure was on in a completely different way. How do you manage to keep all the balls in the air with a smile on your face? The honest answer is that most of you (most of us) don’t!! Well not all the time anyway, even if you give the impression that you do… a bit like a swan gliding gracefully along the top of a flowing river, whilst its feet are frantically paddling underneath to remain afloat. I also wonder if the words “manic” and “Super-mum” ring any bells? These are two words I hear a lot from clients, especially women. A couple of other words used a lot are “overwhelmed” and “pressure”. Any resonance there yet? There may be the lucky few of you who really do float through life not feeling any of the emotions I mentioned, and that is great. I just know that these overwhelming feelings are ones that I had on and off when my son was younger and I was juggling. They are also how a lot of my clients feel on a mostly daily or weekly basis. One thing I would like to stress to anyone reading this, is that it is okay to feel these emotions. It is perfectly natural. We parents tend to be very hard on ourselves, lumping guilt on ourselves where we don’t need to. Something clients and I work with during our sessions, is bringing fallibility and humanity into their conscious awareness, which then enables them to be more compassionate with themselves and their “Super-mum”, “manic” susceptibilities, understanding those overwhelming feelings at a different level. I hate to break it to you, but everyone is actually human, which means we are fallible.

It really is okay to drop the occasional ball, or to put a couple down for a few days and pick them up when you actually need to. You could always choose to give a few away to someone else. What I am saying is, that you honestly do not need to carry all the balls (the Super-mum and overwhelming feelings) around with you all the time. The world won’t end if you choose to put some down, being kinder to yourself in the process – really it won’t!! So, I would like to invite you to take a moment… STOP… literally do not move for a few seconds. Feel the ground beneath your feet. Feel the weight of your body going through your feet. Feel the breath in your body. Take a couple of nice deep breaths and allow your mind to stop at the same time (it’s a trick, so your mind will play along)... and now, having done that a few times, carry on with your day. It allows a “pause for thought” and a bit if a “time out”, which enables you to really put all the balls down for a short time and gather your breath. Do this a few times a day and you will notice a difference.
