Welcome to June!

A

s I write this, we’re still enjoying that unseasonable stretch of glorious warm weather in early May. I’m hoping that it’s still with us by the time you read this and that you’ve made the most of the early summer sun and the Sussex countryside. Intrepid team member, Ginette Stevens, has tackled the South Downs way in style this month, with a solo hangliding flight. Read about her adventure on page 22. Perhaps a little more sedate, but equally inspiring, are the activities of Sussex’s very own survival & foraging expert, Nick weston. I met up with Nick to enjoy a brew of nettle tea and a natter about wild activities for all the family (page 17) And this month’s dish from the Over the Farm Kitchen makes summery Sunday lunch a treat with an intriguing

recipe for lemonade Gammon with a Pimms’ Glaze which turns out to be as delicious as it sounds (page 27) Fingers crossed for a sunny June and don’t forget to take your cameras out and about with you. we’re enjoying your photos of Sussex – keep them coming.

Nick Herbert visits new Partridge Green allotments

shining stars

A

rundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert MP visited a new allotments project in Partridge Green. The new site, located next to Jolesfield Common football pitches, has provided Partridge Green’s community with additional allotments. Residents have worked together to provide water and improve the soil for each plot. The project has brought the community together and created a new social environment in which plot holders have got to know each other when they may not otherwise have met. Karen Vice Chairman of the Jolesfield Allotments Group Association said: “It has taken an awful lot of work to get where we are now. In the beginning it was a real challenge to get planning acceptance. The committee would like to say a very big thank you to those allotment holders and other volunteers who have put in a lot of time and effort to clear the site, lay water pipes, plant hedges and continue to help with improvements.” Andrew Dunlop, who lives opposite the new allotments, said: “Starting these new allotments from scratch is a fantastic community project that brings people together. It was great that Nick was able to come along to see the project.”

Warm Front Scheme reopens for new applications

G

et in quick if to apply for a Warm Front grant is the message from Horsham District Council. The Government’s Warm Front scheme installs insulation and heating improvements to make homes more energy efficient. The scheme offers heating and insulation improvements worth up to £3,500 (£6,000 for oil central heating) for eligible households. As a result of the Government’s Spending Review, the Warm Front grant pot has been reduced and will be allocated on a first come first saved basis. Although the warmer weather is here, it is important that residents who think they may be eligible for a grant to improve the energy efficiency of their homes apply early. To apply for a Warm Front grant or find out more, householders can call free on 0800 316 2814 or visit www.warmfront.co.uk June 2011 • Village Living

Llamas have arrived!

T

wo of the beautiful South American animals have now taken up temporary residence at Chesworth Farm, Horsham’s premier countryside site. The llamas are both three years old and are here to look after the important wildflower meadows at Chesworth. Together with Horsham District Council’s flock of Hebridean sheep, they will graze the grassland to keep down the weeds to allow the rare wild flowers to bloom. Chesworth Farm is open 365 days a year and is free to enter. It’s just a 15 minute walk from Horsham town centre and perfect for family dog

walks or bike rides away from the roads. The 90 acre paradise of wild grassland and ancient hedgerow is steeped in history, having been a farm since before 1086 and home to two of Henry VIII’s wives – Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard. The llamas, and Hebridean sheep they are looking after, can be seen at Chesworth Farm this month. The llamas are in a securely fenced enclosure and can be protective over their sheep so please don’t enter their field. In the future the llamas and sheep will move to Owlbeech Woods where they will take on their serious work of grazing the restored heathland to control invasive birch and bramble.

Local Wine trail

S

ixteen Horsham businesses took advantage of a new Wine Trail through Horsham on Easter Monday and enjoyed close to 200 people walking through their doors to sample up to 42 different wines at town centre bars, pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. The ‘Contrada del Vino Italiana’ event was organised by Horsham District Council, sponsored by Waitrose and formed part of the masked extravaganza – Carnevale di Venezia – the final day climax of Horsham’s fifth Piazza Italia Easter festival. The unique ‘tasting menu’ concept was a first for Horsham attracting an outstanding 16 participating businesses, pulling together to showcase their finest Italian wines.Visitors to the event picked up a ‘tour passport’ from a stand in the Carfax, which was manned by staff from event supporters Piries Bar. The programme gave full details of all the participating venues, tasting times and all the tempting wines to sample. All businesses were allocated a popular Italian city which helped to ‘put them on the map’ in Horsham. As well as all the fabulous tasters, there were also business promotions to take advantage of and prizes to be won linked with the event. As part of a prize draw, The Anchor Hotel in Horsham donated a meal for two including a bottle of wine for anyone who sampled 10 of the wines on offer throughout the day. Horsham resident Ian Tunnell took part in the wine tasting tour and was drawn as winner of the meal for two at The Anchor Hotel. He said:“I sampled wines in 10 of the venues with my family and it was a great way to trot round and see everything else going on. It was really good to try out some new places in town. “Sampling different atmospheres in different venues on the same day was really interesting. I would definitely do it again – it was a great social thing, chatting to other people who were doing it. “As the weather was so good, we actually came to the event all 3 days! Horsham does these events so well and they always seem to run like a well oiled machine.” www.villageliving.biz | tel: 01903 814092

13 • BACK FARM IN DIARY TIME

Farm Diary

A

t Over The Farm Gate we are all chuffed to bits as our delicious homemade free range pork sausages have won a gold and silver national award! we won Gold for our breakfast sausages and we won a silver award for our pork and leek with Sussex Charmer cheese. This was the first competition we entered and to have had such great results for our first time is amazing! Come down to the farm and try some next time you are passing. You won’t be disappointed. Our Aberdeen Angus Bull, Billy, has been such a success - his calves are fantastic – and this month’s calving is going well, touch wood. last year our first calving was very testing. we had so many problems to deal with like caesarians, breech deliveries and sadly a stillbirth. This year it’s been totally different, using our bull for natural service instead of AI (artificial insemination), which produced some massive calves, hence all the difficult deliveries. we have been busy sorting out all the sheep, getting the shearers in to get rid of their heavy hot fleeces. with the unusually hot April we have had more problems with flies so the quicker their dirty fleeces come off the better! Due to our pork and sausage sales increasing we are delighted to be adding to our pig herd with the addition of another Gloucester Old Spot Gilt (female pig that has not had

a litter) so we can put her with Charlie our Boar to produce us some beautiful piglets in approximately 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days!! we are not sure of her name yet, maybe we could have some suggestions?? Hopefully this will allow us to keep up with demand and it gives me an excuse to have some more gorgeous piglets to look at out of my kitchen window! This time of year is so beautiful, and I have seen my first ducklings whilst driving up the river bank checking the cattle. I have also heard the beautiful sound of the nightingale whilst feeding the lambs last thing at night. we would also like to congratulate our competition winners, firstly lucy Cooper who won 12 sausages of her choice and also the winner of our Easter bunny name competition was lilly who correctly guessed that the bunnies name was Tallulah. lilly’s mum and dad won a crown of lamb for Easter and as lilly won she was presented with a cocoa loco chocolate fish! I will get myself organised for next month and put some photos of our animals in the diary for you all to see. Enjoy the weather and all your BBQ’s!

Hunt, Gather & Cook Village Living meets Sussex survival expert, Nick Weston

N

ick weston lives a life that small boys, and for that matter, small girls, can only dream of. Based at his own woodland camp on the borders of the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, Nick is Sussex’s own survival expert, wild food forager and tree-house dweller. He has recently begun offering courses to outdoorsy types and from April to October, expects to welcome dozens of new recruits to a wilder way of living. Visitors to his camp can expect to learn survival tips, trapping, wild food and medicinal plant identification as well as how to prepare a slap-up meal from all of the ingredients found throughout the day. Nick’s own childhood sounds idyllic. Nick and his older brother grew up in a little cottage in the Ashdown Forest, spending the majority of their time ‘grubbing around in the woods’. Acquiring a copy of the SAS Survival Handbook, a rather more brutal affair than today’s modern equivalent, The Dangerous Book for Boys, Nick and his brother set out to master many of its techniques. They were particularly successful at trapping rabbits and soon learnt to skin, cook and eat them, which according to Nick, was a direct result of his mum going on strike, fed up of preparing the ever-growing number of small furry animals brought home by the boys.

I suspect few other children of Nick’s age would have had the same opportunity to run wild and experiment with traps, knives and other traditional hunting weapons, and today’s children certainly have little or no access to that kind of freedom, a situation which Nick hopes to remedy with his courses and teachings. As Nick points out, trapping is largely illegal in this country now and bizarrely, it is also illegal to hunt with a bow and arrow. “Traditional hunting and survival skills are all but lost,” says Nick, “and there is no way that society is going to regain that knowledge in any significant way, but passing on those techniques even to a few, helps keep them alive.” Nick’s knowledge isn’t based solely on personal experience. At university he studied Archaeology, specializing in Mesolithic hunter-gatherer tribes and not long after graduation, he was able to put that knowledge to the test. Recruited as the survival expert for Channel 4’s Shipwrecked programme, he found himself in Fiji teaching stranded urbanites the skills they would need to win the grueling reality show. I can imagine it must have been hard to settle down to a humdrum life after that, and for Nick, it crystallized his desire to live more self-sufficiently himself. where you or I might try to recycle a bit more or plant a few www.villageliving.biz | tel: 01903 814092 Village Living • June 2011

vegetables, Nick built himself a treehouse in the Ashdown Forest and lived completely off grid for a year, resulting in the recently published book, The Tree House Diaries. It sounds like the ultimate escape fantasy, but even for an experienced woodsman like Nick, it was mentally and physically very tiring. “To catch and grow everything you eat, to build and make everything you need to live, to carry water every day, wash clothes in rivers and keep a fire going 24 hours a day takes an awful lot of energy and you come to appreciate just why hunter gatherers were only successful when they lived in community groups and shared the work together.” Now Nick is aiming to give a flavor of that wild period in his life to others and it sounds brilliantly adventurous. A typical day course might start in the morning with flint-knapping to make basic tools, checking traps and skinning and cooking rabbits and a two-hour foraging walk before tucking into a wild lunch of black bread and stinging nettle pesto for example, or maybe rabbit

pizzas cooked in the clay over that Nick built by hand. After lunch, Nick likes to take his gang down to a nearby river for a spot of wild carp fishing. “In Britain, we’ve completely lost the taste and the habit of eating native river fish and it’s

such a shame because with the right preparation they taste fantastic. Carp are food, not pets.” Cooking the meal is one of the high points of the day, because it involves learning basic firelighting techniques using pyrites and tinder, which according to Nick, is a basic Mesolithic technique which is easier than it sounds. After a busy day outdoors, hunting, gathering and cooking, participants finish the day with a real sense of achievement. He tells me that a ‘dads and lads’ overnight sleepout is in the pipeline and I’m sure it will be a sellout. I’m not sure if it’s nostalgia, or it simply caters to the need for children to have an outlet for their adventurousness in a fairly safe environment. I particularly like the warning on Nick’s website that ‘all packages do involve the use of potentially lethal tools including a shotgun, axe, machete and knife.’ Surely that’s more appealing that the usual suspects – computer, mobile phone and Nintendo DS. Bring on the wild child.

Paragliding with APEX

H

ave you ever driven through Poynings and Fulking craning your neck to see the paragliders gently cruising off Devil’s Dyke on a beautiful Sussex day? I know I have, and it was always something I had wanted to try. So when I was given the opportunity to join Gary Cook and his team from APEX for a day’s taster course I jumped at the chance. As the day approached however, I have to admit to feeling rather nervous and on my journey to meet Gary I was accompanied by lots of butterflies – in my tummy! Meeting Gary at Devil’s Dyke car park, he told me we would be joining another team for the day making six trainees in all, as well as four instructors, all highly skilled and members of the BHPA (British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association). Before moving to our paragliding site, we were asked to read and sign a third party insurance cover plan and a disclaimer. Gulp. we were told that paragliding is a risk sport and, although rare, accidents and injuries do happen and we all had to bear this in mind. The slight danger factor is obviously part of the appeal and we willingly moved off with an excited spring in our steps to the designated site. It is a close-knit sport and Gary has many friends and contacts in the profession – clearly identified by the June 2011 • Village Living

teaming up of two companies that day. Gary has been paragliding for 20 years and has a wealth of experience under his belt. He set up APEX several years ago, having decided to go it alone. There are two sites at Devil’s Dyke which are used by APEX, as well as sites at nearby Truleigh Hill, Mount Caburn (near lewes) and Ditchling Beacon. All sites are carefully chosen by APEX for their suitability. Arriving at our site, we were given our canopies and harnesses. These are assigned to the individual based on their weight. The lightest package (including the individual) needs to weigh approximately 60kg, and the heaviest 120kg. The harness and canopy weighs about 17kg and so these weight variations do accommodate most people. The youngest age you can join APEX is 16 (with a parent/guardian accompanying you). At 18 you can come on your own. There is no upper age limit and Gary related stories of people over 80 paragliding. we were to train until lunchtime on all safety aspects of the sport and getting to know the equipment. Then, after a break, we would begin the fun part – having a go! My tummy briefly flipped at this but we were quickly reassured that to begin with we would be running on flat ground to get used to the canopy rising. Once we were confident with this, and how to use the

equipment, we could move to trying to get airborne. we were shown how to unpack our gear and carefully check it for defects. we also learnt how to adjust our harness and lay the canopy out correctly. Once the team were happy with this, we were shown an emergency paragliding landing which involved

hitting the ground on the soft parts of the body rather than the bonier and therefore more breakable parts. I must say that we were not the most elegant fallers but if it saved broken bones in an emergency, it was well worth mastering. Then we moved onto groundhandling skills. Instructor Robbie became the action man whilst Nigel talked us thorough the techniques. After a couple of demonstrations and a few questions, it was time for us to try. I put on my equipment, took hold of the A risers and brakes, checked nothing was twisted and ran. For a few seconds. Then something very firmly stopped me in my tracks and I was glued to the spot, totally unable to go any further. The force of the canopy rising was immense. But suddenly I had the strength to move again and I was off. Unsure of how far to go, but feeling mighty chuffed my canopy was up, I carried on running. And running and running. My feet even left the ground for a split second. Finally, at the end of the field, I stopped and, turning to see my canopy fall gently behind me, I felt rather pleased with my efforts. But why had no one else gone so far? Gathering up my equipment to walk back to the start, I soon realised why. 17kg of gear, a hot day and walking uphill did not bode well. Thank goodness for layers of clothing that could easily be removed! we practised running several more times until Gary and the team were happy for us to move to the next part of the training; becoming airborne.

Moving to another part of the site, we faced into the valley. The wind was perfect and we were all raring to go. The ratio of instructors to participants really worked as one of us would go and the first instructor would help us get some speed (in my case with a good push!), then another would ensure once airborne we stayed up and lastly, another would shout words of encouragement and instruction about our steering and height. I am slightly ashamed to admit, but when I first got airborne, I let out a whoop of joy. It was so exhilarating. Although probably no more than 20 feet off the ground, it felt more like 100. what an experience! It was great to watch my fellow trainees gain height and confidence too and we all encouraged each other as

we passed on the hill – one in the air and one walking up the grass. After several more flights, I decided to call it a day. I felt I had achieved my best flight of the day and wanted to end on a high. Gary agreed it was good, but if I’d kept my eye on that tree straight ahead and not veered so much to the left, it could have been even better. what did he know?!?! would I paraglide again? Definitely. It was tiring, but exhilarating and a must for anyone with a sense of adventure. Flying takes place all year round but is clearly dependent on the weather. Gary advised that, on average, flying takes place around 50% of the time. There are various courses available depending on experience and length of course required.

as a special offer to Village Living readers, aPEX is offering a discount of £10 to the first 20 people to book a taster day, or longer course. to receive this discount, contact the office at office@learnparagliding.co.uk quoting ‘Village Living offer, or call on 0780 350 6567. Just think, by day 3 or 4, you could be 600ft above Devils Dyke, and once fully trained, as high as the cloud base allows.

Residence Pop-up Restaurant Brighton Reviewed by: Melissa Love

I

t’s been a year since Residence, Brighton’s first ever pop-up restaurant, appeared on the scene. It made its debut at last year’s Brighton Fringe Festival and recently re-opened its doors once more for another month of retro fun. Pop-up restaurants have become quite the thing in London, with even Jo Wood, the long-suffering ex-wife of Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood, getting in on the act with her pop-up restaurant-cum-events-company, Mrs Paisley’s Lashings. Open from the 7th to the 28th of May, Residence might be making a fleeting appearance but the restaurant which hosts it is a more permanent affair. For three hectic weeks, the student-run gallery restaurant at Brighton’s City College is transformed into a more sophisticated version of its usual self, attracting an eclectic crowd of festival-goers, loyal customers and locals who are intrigued by the concept. It is the brainchild of local film producer and gastronome, Euan MacDonald and his best friend, City College catering lecturer, Chris Williams. “The Fringe Festival was the perfect excuse to open a pop-up restaurant as well as challenging the catering students at City College in a fun way.” The concept of a teaching restaurant is more widely understood since the success of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurants, but City College has quietly been operating their own version, The Gallery Restaurant, for years. The programme has been so positively received that City College are taking on another teaching restaurant in the Amex Community Stadium, which opens in September. June 2011 • Village Living

Village Living 21 0611 AW.indd 24

Last year’s Residence took its inspiration from local artists, who were on hand during every service, producing works of art which were eventually auctioned off for charity. This year some of the artists will be returning but it’s the food which is taking centre stage. The menu features a comprehensive list of 1970s classic dishes, from Scotch Egg, to Duck a l’Orange and Crepes Suzette flamed at the table. It’s an ambitious concept which the organisers are taking seriously. “The 1970s is the decade when Britain discovered food,” explains Chris. “We don’t necessarily eat like that today, but it doesn’t mean that those dishes shouldn’t be celebrated. We have lovingly re-created our favourites and given them a modern twist.” Local wine expert, Henry Butler, is also part of the team, offering ‘flights of wine’ – small tasting glasses – which

match the different dishes. “Flights of wine are a brilliantly affordable way of trying lots of different high quality wines. It’s a great way to work out what you like,” explains Henry. And so to the food. We lunched on the opening day of Residence Pop-up – sometimes a risky business, but in this case, one which paid off. The Gallery Restaurant has been transformed into a 70s living room and, on the day we visited, local artist, Req, was creating a graffiti frieze around the entrance, drawing a small crowd. For a first day, the service was slick and attentive and at £12.50 for three lunch courses, outstanding value. But which two courses? Prawn Cocktail or Portabello Garlic Mushroom; Seafood Vol-au-Vent or Confit Duck a l’Orange? In the end, we chose a selection of dishes around the table and promised to share.

Residence Table 6 11May’11 6.37 2 x lunch menu Top marks went to the free-range Scotch egg, with a delightfully soft-boiled centre and a tangy tomato chutney and to gentleman’s club classic, lamb Cutlets Reform, which were perfectly turned out in a coat of savoury breadcrumbs. The undoubted high point, however, was the old school table service. Our locally-sourced Smoked Salmon starter was expertly sliced at the table, our main courses appeared under glamorous silver cloches which were whipped away by a team of synchronised waiters and for the grand finale to the meal, our Crepes Suzette were flambéed with style and flair and a great deal of flame. Tasty and entertaining. Residence is of course, short-lived, and by the time this is published, will have but a few days to run, but do go anyway. The Gallery Restaurant will revert to its usual, more sedate self after the 28th of May, but the high standard of cooking, the great value menu and the glamorous silver cloches will remain. after the 28th of may, normal service resumes at the Gallery restaurant, city college Brighton & hove, Whitecross street, Brighton, Bn1 4fa. tel 01273 667711.

Real choices for ale drinkers

T

here has never been a better time to be a real ale drinker, so here’s a quick guide to enjoying the best of what’s available locally...

Bottles: advantages – Small quantities (normally 500ml), long shelf life, flexible serving temperature (if you want to put them in the fridge to chill slightly then it is easy to do so). disadvantages – Some can be too fizzy, most national brands have too much carbonation, which reduces the flavour. Heavy bottles to carry. Bottle-conditioned Bottle-conditioned beers have a small amount of sediment at the bottom of the bottle, (this will vary between breweries). The bottles need to be stored upright and poured carefully in one go, leaving a small amount of beer in the bottle. There are some really excellent bottle-conditioned beers out there. This type of beer is more likely to improve/change with age than bright or brewery conditioned ones. Bright or Brewery conditioned beers (no sediment) These are easier to look after, you can pour the whole contents in and not have to worry about leaving the sediment behind. There are some really good bottles of ale that are not bottled- conditioned. These also tend to have more consistent flavours and carbonation.

polypins (Bag in a box): Similar to the bag of wine in a box from the supermarkets, most breweries offer Polypins & Minipins, different breweries call these different things but effectively it is a bag of beer in a box, (cider also available this way). For this you normally have two options of size, either a 10l (minipin) or 20l (polypin), approx 17 and 35 pints respectively, some breweries offer 5l containers but these are quite rare. The great thing about minipins and polypins is that when compared with firkins, the beer stays in good condition for longer and does not ‘go off’, because air cannot get in and spoil the contents. sedimented or bright? Most breweries will offer the option of both sedimented and bright polypins. which of these you choose depends on your situation. If you are looking for the beer to be as close as possible to real ale in a pub and have somewhere to leave the beer to settle for 24 hours, then sedimented is the best option. The ideal storage temperature is between 10-15°C to get the best conditioning and flavours. sedimented advantages • As close as possible to the real thing, great flavours and good conditioning. • Can last as long as 3-4 weeks if kept cool and with no air getting in (it shouldn’t if you progressively tilt the box as it gets drunk).

Bright advantages • It can be moved as much as you like and poured straight away (ideal for taking to a party or camping trip where you are going to drink it all over a few days). • If you like the ale cooler than the current temperature where you were planning to drink it, then the polypin can be placed overnight in a colder place, (like a cellar or chiller), and then bring it out when you are ready to drink it. • Every last drop can be drunk with no risk of a cloudy beer. Bright disadvantages • Will only last for 3-4 days, sometimes longer but this depends on the conditions you keep it in; also the higher the alcohol by volume, (abv), the longer it should last. In addition, the more hops that are used in the brew the better, as they help to preserve the beer.

sussex is fortunate in having more than 20 breweries, all producing excellent real ale from, predominately, locally sourced ingredients. much of this is available for drinking at home, both bottled and in ‘boxes’. for further information see Beermat.co.uk, or phone 01444 241093

Bamboo & Ginkgo

T

his month at Big Plant we are featuring our bamboo and the incredibly resilient Ginkgo plants! Ginkgo biloba is the sole survivor of a group of trees which grew on this planet over 200 million years ago and it has changed very little in all that time. It has survived all our planetary climatic changes and even survived the atomic bomb dropped at Hiroshima. It is a true survivor being very tough and untouched by any pests or diseases. Every part of the tree is used in Chinese folk medicine. The Ginkgo makes a remarkable feature in any garden and is mainly renowned for its spectacular yellow autumn colour. Often seen as a large tree in parks and gardens there are many varieties of Ginkgo biloba available, ranging from the Autumn gold specimen tree to the chi chi which is ideal for potting on a patio! All are very well suited to container growing where they will live happily for many years with minimal attention and occasional feeding. If

planted with care they can live to well over one hundred years, so it is worth taking some care in selecting and planting your tree As Ginkgos are remarkably easy to care for and will grow in most conditions from sun through to shade They are completely hardy and often make an excellent alternative to the Japanese maple. Ginkgo biloba ‘Tubifolia’ is a fascinating shrubby tree with thin, twiggy growth. This forms two distinct types of foliage: on mature wood the leaf is fused to resemble a small green trumpet while the younger wood produces a classic Ginkgo leaf but with a more jagged outline. As the tree matures, the majority of the foliage will be trumpet shaped. Very unusual and highly sought after, great looking in a pot! Onto our fantastic group of bamboos including the famous black bamboo and golden bamboo. Phyllostachys nigra or the black bamboo, is the most popular and best

known of all bamboos. The jet black canes reach around 4 or 5 metres in height and are covered in masses of lush green dainty leaves. The best situation for the black bamboo is in a good, rich soil that does not dry out too readily. The black bamboo grows well in a container but must be kept well watered at all times to ensure good, strong growth. You should expect the black bamboo to add about a third to its height and spread each year. To achieve the blackest canes possible, plant in full sun and enjoy the wait as the canes turn from a lush green to an ebony black. Phyllostachys aurea the Golden Bamboo or Fishing Pole Bamboo has dark green canes which mature to a golden yellow. These grow really nice and bushy making them excellent for screening and will reach a height of between 3.5 and 5 metres. These are one of the most reliable bamboos and a popular alternative to the black bamboo and are best suited to a sunny position in good rich soil.

from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice...

Will rates stay low for longer?

L

ast week the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to keep rates at the all time low of 0.5%. Many were predicting that rates would rise but are now changing their view, thinking that rates will remain low for longer. The last week has seen many lenders reducing their fixed rate mortgages, is this a sign that our rates will remain low? The MPC meet every month and make a decision on our interest rates. They take into account many economic factors when making their decision, information gathered from within the bank and outside sources. Their job is to keep our economy stable. In their own words “One of the Bank of England’s two core purposes is monetary stability. Monetary stability means stable prices – low inflation – and confidence in the currency. Stable prices are defined by the Government’s inflation target, which the Bank seeks to meet through the decisions taken by the Monetary Policy Committee.” The Government’s inflation target is 2%. The MPC use the interest rate to control this. If inflation is high they can increase the rate. Inflation has been high recently which is why people

have through rates would increase. In February the UK Consumer Prices Index was at 4.4%, way above the target. The MPC were under pressure to increase rates. In March, however, this fell to 4%, with no rate rise. As inflation is an annualised figure, it is possible to predict within reason what will happen. Predictions from top economists are that inflation will remain at 4-5% during 2011, and will naturally fall to 2% during 2012. They feel that interest rates do not need to go up for this to happen. Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England has been voting to keep the rate at 0.5%. His view is that there is too much borrowed money in the economy and a rate rise would push many people and businesses into bankruptcy. In a speech to a finance committee at the European Parliament he said “The economic consequences of high-level indebtedness now would become more severe if rates were to rise, it is the main reason why interest rates are so low.” Other economists agree thinking that a rate rise would be detrimental, and predicting that rates will remain low for a much longer time, some think even to the end of 2012.

If this is the case, it’s is good news for anyone on variable or tracker rate mortgages. If you are taking a mortgage now, it’s a good idea to compare both fixed and variable rate or tracker mortgages. There could still be some value in taking a tracker rate, especially if the initial rate is much lower than the fixed rates on offer. This seems to be the case in today’s market. everybody’s situation is different, so it’s always best to speak to a professional adviser. they can show you the rates on offer and make a comparison, advising you on the best rate for you. if you need independent financial advice regarding mortgages or any other financial area, please feel free to call me claire cook on 01273 224667. ith the Olympics just over a year away, I thought that I would write about how Cognitive Hypnotherapy can make the difference in Sports performance. There are many influences on the mindset of competitors that can adversely affect their performance. Amongst them is self confidence; especially in the big events. Hypnotherapy can be used to enable athletes to recall the feelings associated with past successes, at the critical point in a competition, so that his/ her confidence and self belief gets a boost. This is simply done by getting the individual (in trance) to recall all of the major occasions when he/she has had successful results and associating them with a simple action, which can be recreated on demand. This technique is known as anchoring. Self-limiting beliefs can be tackled using Hypnotherapy. Those subconscious thoughts, such as ‘I am not good enough’, I am not worthy’ etc. can be identified and corrected; using everyday techniques from the hypnotherapy arsenal. Stage fright can be tackled in a similar way. A friend of mine could not play golf to his best ability, because

over again, so that the brain is led into believing that what was imagined can become reality. Next month, I will continue on this theme and identify other areas where cognitive Hypnotherapy can give competitors the edge that can make the difference between silver and gold. for more information on cognitive hypnotherapy, either visit www.questinstitute.co.uk or my website www.chrisjones.uk.com. he could not bear the thought of having to receive a trophy, in front of an audience. This issue was dealt with very quickly. On a grander scale, many people are overwhelmed by the scale of the audiences involved in major competitions. Coping mechanisms are also taught to help resolve this type of problem. Visualisation techniques are even more effective when carried out under hypnosis, as the images appear to be even more real to the individual. Mental rehearsal of the competition with the competitor performing to best ever standards can be carried out over and

Chris is a Cognitive Hypnotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner and Sports Performance Mind Coach. He became involved with mind techniques while practicing martial arts in his younger days. He subsequently became interested in the concept of using them to help people and found that Hypnotherapy provided the ideal tools for this work. He is based in Storrington.
