Welcome to July!

S

ummer is upon us and with school holidays looming, outdoor activities for the whole family are the perfect way to explore the Sussex countryside. We sent intrepid reported, Ginette Stevens, to investigage Buzz on the Common, Henfield’s newest fun-filled family activity programme. Rope climbing, fire building, hiding and seeking with fellow adventurous parents and theiroffspring were all on the menu. Read about her antics on page 22. Finally we get the chance, to catch up with Steyning’s busiest man and favourite shopkeeper, nick hempleman.

Read about his successful move to larger premises on page 14. And this month’s dish from the Over the Farm Kitchen is naughty but oh so nice. Summer means picnics and in our house, picnics mean cakes. Their wickedly lovely chocolate cake will be a big hit with all of the family (page 23). Whilst you are out and about in the sunshine, don’t forget to take your cameras out with you. We’re really enjoying your photos of Sussex – please keep them coming.

Wash your hands!

O

ur District Council’s environmental health team will be visiting nurseries giving a presentation on managing health and safety and infectious disease risks when children visit farms. Rod Brown, head of Planning and environmental Services at horsham District Council, said: “We want children to enjoy visits to open farms as they are fun and educational. People may hear of e.Coli O157 but do not know just how dangerous this particular strain is; it is a nasty infection that people can pick up when handling or stroking animals. hand washing is very important using soap and hot water and then drying them thoroughly and young children need to be supervised when washing their hands.” Farm animals, although cute, can carry harmful viruses and bacteria, including e.coli O157, that can be harmful to people. In fact, some of these infections may be passed from animals to humans can cause very serious illnesses, especially in young children. anyone wishing to book onto a course, or for further information, please contact ellie griffiths at horsham district council on 01403 215425 or email ellie.griffiths@horsham.gov.uk

The Year of the Wedding

I

f you’ve got wedding fever after the recent Royal nuptials, St. Mary’s Church in Storrington is celebrating weddings all year long. Village resident, Jean Minter, is organizing a fantastic event to raise money for the proposed new children’s corner at St. Mary’s Church. The Festival of Wedding Dresses and Christening Gowns is planned to run from Friday to Sunday, 8th – 10th July. The Church will be decorated as if for a very special wedding and there will be forty wedding dresses and more than twenty Christening robes on display. The wedding dresses have all been donated by local people, and date from the 1930s and range from the 30’s 40’s and up until the present time even including a replica of a dress worn in 1911. The exhibition clearly illustrates the changing fashions, ranging from the simple bias-cut dresses worn in the 1930s to mini dresses worn in the 1960s and including designer dresses of more recent years. The display will also include the stories associated with the dresses and even a Japanese wedding robe, believed to be more than 100 years old. Along with the dresses come the very interesting stories of the people who wed in them~ for example one bride travelled from the church to her reception on a steam traction engine, another met her husband on a Friday, got engaged on the Saturday and married the following week! One particular dress dates from 1948, when family and friends would have contributed clothing coupons to aid its purchase, at a time when food was still rationed and only limited extra rations were allowed towards the food for the reception, market gardeners were growing food rather than flowers and the bouquet was often replaced with a prayer book or Bible. One lady who married in 1939, went to live in the Belgian Congo, couldn’t return for 8 years because of the war. There are some fascinating stories to be shared. Many of the Christening robes on display are family heirlooms and some have been passed through many generations of one family. Some were stitched by hand and embroidered by women expecting their first child. The Church will be open on Friday and Saturday, 8th and 9th July (10 a.m.-7 p.m.), and on Sunday, 10th July (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.), when there will be a service to celebrate marriage at 6 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, there will also be a Craft Market at the Old School opposite the Church from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. where refreshments will be available.

Farm Diary

A

s I write this I am trying to come to terms with the sad loss of my favourite pig Dorothy. unfortunately she sustained an injury to her knee and could not recover so, I have had to make the heartbreaking decision with the help of my lovely vet Jenny to stop the suffering. It really is a horrible thing to have to do and although she was a breeding sow she was also the first pig i ever had and i am completely lost without her... Anyway i need to stop writing about her as i am flooding the keyboard with my tears! I know that as a farmers wife I should be rufty tufty but you do get attached to some animals.... RIP Dorothy xxxx elsewhere on the farm we are currently trying to make some hay and some silage but it keeps raining! Very good in one way as we are desperate for the water but in another way its soooo frustrating. We need to be able to get enough hay and silage to keep in store ready for the winter feeding. James is trying his best to literally make hay whilst the sun shines! We have opened our lovely little tea room at the farm serving light lunches ,homemade aga baked pies and pasties as well as cream teas and cakes with tea and coffee and a selection of soft drinks. Come and enjoy a cuppa and a slice of cake whilst watching the lambs playing in the fields. enjoy the summer and sun as and when it next decides to put in an appearance!

Success for Sussex Produce Village Living catches up with Nick Hempleman

I

f there was an award for the busiest man in Steyning, Nick Hempleman, owner of The Sussex Produce Company, would surely be the frontrunner by a mile. When I dropped in to visit him the other day, I’m sure it was the first time he’d sat down at one of his café tables since the new shop opened on Steyning High Street in May. The Sussex Produce Company has been a firm favourite in Steyning since it first opened its doors in November 2007. Bursting with beautifully arranged fresh produce and carefully sourced July 2011 • Village Living

local products from across the county, it is a shop that many in the local area have been keen to support. With such attention to detail, and friendly service, it’s not surprising that the business soon outgrew its much smaller premises at 50 High Street. “We’ve been actively looking for another site for about a year and a half,” Nick tells me. “Actually, our first intention was to look for an additional shop in another town, but there are so few places where local residents actively shop on the high street and where

www.villageliving.biz | tel: 01903 814092

there is no large supermarket. Rents in Brighton and Hove are simply huge, so in the end, we decided to stick with Steyning but make the move to a larger place.” Interestingly, the retail area dedicated to fresh produce in the new premises is roughly the same as it was in the old shop, but it’s the addition of a deli counter, café area and an increased range of wines and beers that makes the new-look Sussex Produce Company exciting. The new shop has retained all the rustic charm of the old premises and the team’s flair for styling and presentation still shines. The centerpiece of the shop is a red vintage tractor rescued by Nick at auction where it has become popular with young shoppers. There are plenty of new lines to keep customers coming back. Of particular note is the new deli counter stocked with a combination of popular local cheeses as well as classics from further afield from Neal’s Yard and free-range cured meats sold by the slice. The wine and beer section is temptingly diverse, with over 100 wines on display which can’t be found in any supermarket as well as draught beer from local brewery, Harvey’s which can be bought in four or eight pint containers. So popular has the cask beer proven that sales have gone from half a barrel to six barrels a week. It’s a big step, but Nick was confident that the company was ready to grow and that shoppers would be supportive. “Effectively what we have now is several shops under one roof. We have really enjoyed sourcing more lovely local

products and we are now able to make even more of our own in our new production kitchen.” nick’s team has risen to the challenge of the move, going from 14 part-time to 30 part-time staff, of all ages and all backgrounds. “We are still finding our feet,” he says, but we are happy and our customers are appreciative. In fact, it is very humbling. On the day we opened our new front doors, there was a queue of 60 people and we hope it continues.” It seems that local food is still a growing trend and the health of local farmers’ markets across the country confirms this. “People love to know where their food is comes from, particularly in the light of the recent e.Coli outbreak. We stock produce from seven of the regular stall holders who attend the Steyning farmers market and that partnership works to raise the profile of local food for everyone.” With more space comes the need for a bigger team and space to load and unload at the rear of the shop, which is currently with the local planning tea. “The local high street has been very supportive,” says nick, “but there have obviously been some concerns. I won’t apologise for running the business in the best possible way I can because I want everyone to prosper. Like attracts like, and we want Steyning to become known as a place with lots of great quality food establishments. Already we are seeing visitors from outside the area making special trips to visit us and shopping along the whole high Street when they do. More visitors to Steyning is good news for everyone.” nick’s enthusiasm is infectious and his support for the high Street and other traders has been steadfast since his first shop opened. Although he hasn’t had a day off since April, when he finally has time to relax, he should give himself a pat on the back.

Although we are small and friendly, we have a growing team at Oomoo Organic Hair Salon and I’m delighted to welcome two new stylists to our salon, Anthony & Andrea. Andrea tells me she loves the laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff and the relaxed clientele she has met so far. And recently relocated from Scotland, Anthony loves the freedom to find the perfect style for every client he sees. This is so important to us. At Oomoo, we are entirely focused on the client and bringing out the best in your hair. We really listen to you to make sure we create just style we have in mind. Of course, it helps to have gorgeous organic products to work with. Every single product we use in the salon, right down to our nail varnish, is organic which means that there are no nasty chemicals around, which are bad for you, or parabens, which are bad for the environment. Best of all, a visit to Oomoo doesn’t cost any more than a trip to your usual salon. If you’d like to know more, feel free to pop into the salon for a chat. We’d love to meet you. Julie x

Buzz on the Common

W

e’re always looking for new things to do as a family, and Buzz on the Common hit the nail right on the head when we joined them recently for a morning of outdoor adventure on Henfield Common, just next to the cricket club. Held from 10am to 12noon on the first Saturday of the month, Buzz is a non- profit making group which follows on from the popular Chatterbox parents and toddlers group in Henfield. Aimed primarily at 4-11 year olds and their parents, the idea of the group is to have fun, socialise and enjoy games in the great outdoors. On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Bob Burley, who helped set up the group in October last year. He explained the plan for the morning, registered us and introduced us to other helpers and participants. The first activity was to be a game of children vs adults football – a good icebreaker. At first my 6 year old son seemed to take charge but then the Dads, looking slightly worried at the skills of the youngsters, began to take notice

We’re always looking for new things to do as a family, and Buzz on the Common hit the nail right on the head when we joined them recently for a morning of outdoor adventure on Henfield Common, just next to the cricket club. and things hotted up. Standing at the sideline (football and flipflops – so last year!), it was evident that things were getting serious. The whistle was blown at a 2-1 victory to the grown-ups who looked mighty pleased with themselves. With time-out called, we moved to an adult supervised camp fire

www.villageliving.biz | tel: 01903 814092

where there was a good supply of marshmallows and bread to toast on readily prepared sticks. Yummy! Pit stop over, it was time to start our next activity – tracking an arrow trail around the wood. We moved off in small groups and headed into the wood. Meandering through the shaded trees gave us a chance to chat to the other parents and enjoy the whoops of delight as the children found the trail indicators and ran off looking for more. I could see my children thoroughly enjoying their adventure and were quickly making new friends as us grown-ups followed their lead. With a couple of wrong turns under our belt, we were once more on the right track and made it back to the temporary camp in one piece. Just time for a quick drink and to catch our breath before we were expertly instructed about our next game – Cops and Robbers. Being a law-abiding citizen, I opted to be a cop, but noticed my less well behaved family all jumping at the chance of being robbers. Being a robber meant you had to hide in the woods and then make your way back to a large tree in the centre without being caught. Each robber was given a piece of yellow tape. If you were caught, you had to give this up. But if you reached the tree as a free person, you kept your tape to be counted at the end. The robbers were slippery things and quite a few made it back without us cops being able to catch them. They looked very pleased with themselves but then saw the light and came over to the good side to help us round up the remaining baddies. With all kids and adults accounted for, we moved back to base where delicious hot-dogs and a drink awaited us. Vegetarian as well as meat sausages had been cooked and we pounced on them with enthusiasm after all our running around.

19 • BACK IN TIME

Time for a catch up with Bob who confirmed that the meetings would always be held outdoors unless the weather was absolutely abysmal. If this was the case, they moved to the Church Hall in the High Street. He advised all participants to wear outdoor clothing; waterproofs and wellies were essential in winter. The group is fully insured and there is always a qualified first aider in attendance. As well as football, the children could climb trees, swing on a tyre, play basketball and have their faces painted. Not bad at just £2 for adults and a child, plus an additional 50p per additional child. Included in this are all activities and snacks. The money goes towards the refreshments and buying new equipment. We came away feeling that we had made new friends and enjoyed a fun-packed morning, and we would be keen to go back in following months. Adventure lovers – give it a go!

For more information regarding BUZZ, please contact Bob Burley on 01273 491256 or e-mail him at valrob01@btinternet.com. The group are always keen to welcome new members and helpers from Henfield and the surrounding villages. Any donations of unwanted equipment would also be gratefully received.

the White horse hotel Storrington

reviewed by: Louise mandry

h

aving never eaten out in Storrington, I was really looking forward to trying The White horse hotel. This 400 year old coaching inn on the high Street houses a 13 bedroom hotel with bar and restaurant. Since it was taken over roughly two years ago the owners have renovated the whole building both inside and out starting with the 13 bedrooms and it has a fresh, clean and modern look throughout the restaurant and bar (we didn’t check out the hotel). If you’re into racing cars, there are a lot of interesting photographs of racing cars on the walls. The owner is a big car fan and the hotel is booked out well in advance for events at Goodwood. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by Jason who offered us the choice of going straight through to the restaurant or perusing the menu while having a drink in the bar. In my role as reviewer I felt it was important to sample as much as possible (!) so we were shown to a quiet and comfy part of the public bar and offered drinks. I would describe the menu as Modern British and although it is not an extensive menu, it has been well thought out and would suit most tastes with prices comparing well with other local eateries. I chose the Smoked

Mackarel Parfait, dressed leaves and horseradish Crème and followed this with the Beef Pistachio and Date Tagine. I was slightly worried that the beef would not be cooked for long enough but it was perfect, just dissolving in my mouth with a really tasty sauce and nicely presented dome of couscous. The starter was also delicious with the mackerel and horseradish making a lovely combination. My only complaint was that I had an enormous helping of the tagine and couldn’t finish it (well I did need to leave a bit of room for pudding too!). Being a fish-eating vegetarian (is there a technical term for this?), my husband went for the Thai Style Fish Cakes, dressed leaves and Sweet Chilli Sauce followed by Red Pepper and Basil Crust Roasted Salmon Fillet, wilted Spinach and Creamy Mashed Potatoes. We decided the Fish Cakes were even

www.villageliving.biz | tel: 01903 814092

better than mine and again the salmon was beautifully cooked with a delicious crust and accompanying vegetables. All the portions were on the large side and so we only had a little room left for pudding. It was a toss up between the array of english cheeses and biscuits, apple chutney and crusty ciabatta or the Crème Brulee. In the end we chose to share the Crème Brulee which was tasty if slightly runny. Throughout the meal we were really well looked after by Jason who gave us just the right amount of attention. The restaurant was fairly quiet although a couple of larger groups came in later. As well as the dinner menu, they also offer a lunch, snack and young guns menu. Again, these all look like they have a good range of choices and the children’s menu is reasonably priced and homemade as well as sounding appealing for kids.

Championing the Cherry

25 • SuSSex In SeASOn

nick hempleman: Owner of The Sussex Produce Company, award winning produce store in Steyning, West Sussex.

I

t’s been six weeks since we opened the new shop in Steyning and we are now well into the throes of one of my favourite times of year. even though the weather cannot always be relied upon to be seasonal, we’ve got some very seasonal fruit and vegetables in our shop, all thanks to our fantastic Sussex producers. One of these seasonal delights is the British (or in our case the Sussex) cherry. This year our cherries are from Spring Gardens in Washington and Oast Farm in Buxted. It’s a sad fact that in the last 50 years we’ve lost 90% of our British cherry orchards and now import around 95% of the cherries we consume. If you ask me, the taste of a home-grown cherry beats an imported one every time and we are proud to do our bit to keep the British cherry alive. And we are clearly not the only ones who feel passionate about this. It’s national Cherry Day on Saturday 16th July and whilst I don’t normally go in

for these ‘fad’ days, I believe that this one’s important. The supermarkets stock cherries regardless of the British cherry season and due to their relentless squeeze on prices over taste and out of season demand, the British cherry orchard has been pushed out of the market. I know the British cherry season is a short one, but I for one will certainly be making the most of it whilst it’s here. Let’s hope the growers are still around this time next year. If you’re looking for cherry recipe ideas, why not try a Cherry, Sheep’s Cheese and Walnut Salad? you can get

everything you need from the shop. Dry fry about 100g of walnut halves until golden. Finely slice a fennel bulb and mix in a salad bowl with a selection of local watercress, rocket and spinach. Whisk together some balsamic vinegar and olive oil and pour over the leaves. Pit and de-stalk your local cherries. Take about 200g of ‘Little Lucie’ sheep’s cheese from high Weald Dairy and available at our deli counter. Break into chunks. Scatter the cherries and cheese over the leaves and serve with some toasted sour dough bread. Simple yet delicious.

Banana & Ginger Crazy!

T

his month here at Big Plant nursery we are going ape for the fantastic and flourishing banana and Ginger plants, it is the perfect time to literally see the fruits of labour with these beautiful exotic plants that you too can grow in your gardens! Both fare well in the south of england, making a superb statement adding height and presence to any garden but may require some winter protection in colder areas. We have a great selection of ginger plants to choose from including the hedychium ‘Assam Orange’ a lovely plant which first introduced into the uK in the 1930’s has since proved to be one of the hardiest gingers available. The lush green foliage is topped by masses of upright orange flower spikes. If you site it in sun and part shade this ginger will continue to reward you year after year. It should reach around 1.5 metres in height and can also be used as a cut flower. hedychium spicatum is a very variable species and one of the hardiest most

floriferous for the open garden with slightly scented flowers, one of the smaller gingers it reaches around 1 to 1.5m. It tends to set seed readily and when ripe the green seed capsules burst open to reveal colourful orange linings with the seeds enclosed in bright red arils. It is naturally deciduous before the onset of frost and some forms give good yellow autumn colour, before they need to be cut down. Two great varieties of banana plants, I should mention are the Musa basjoo, a Japanese hardy banana is a fabulous hardy banana which when given rich soil and plenty of feed can reach 4m or more. It is root hardy so shoots from the ground each year if frosted but if the trunk is protected it gets larger each year. This plant can even flower and produce small bananas! Plant in moist rich soil in a sunny or partially shady spot and then all you have to do is stand back and enjoy; and secondly we have the Musella lasiocarpa, The Golden lotus banana hailing all the

It naturally forms large clumps and rarely exceeds 2 metres in height; once mature the largest stem produces a spectacular bright yellow flower (hence golden lotus) that can last for up to 6 months. Once this flower has died, the surrounding stems carry on growing and will each flower in turn. Almost as hardy as Musa basjoo, this particular banana is worth trying if you don’t have the room for the larger plant.

any people wait until a life changing time to see someone like me, for example when they want to move house, or are about to retire. I would happily see you at these times and help out, but often it is wise to make a review when these things are not occurring just to make sure you are in the right place with your finances. It can make a huge difference over a lifetime. Recently many people have been reviewing their pensions. I understand that the statements are easy to tuck away, and most are in language many would not understand, but this is your invested money. A pension review can have a real impact on your retirement income. Often people have several plans which have accumulated over the years. The good thing is that I am able to deal with your pension companies on your behalf, obtaining information and comparing your plans with the ones now available. you could be paying high charges, or languishing in funds which are not performing. At Talk Money we review your funds on an ongoing basis, it’s all part of the

service. We also make sure that the risk you are taking is in line with your requirements, this is also monitored for you. All of this ensures that your money will be looked after from the point we arrange a pension for you. If you have investments, the story could be the same. With good intentions you could have invested in a stocks & shares ISA. how is this performing? has it been reviewed and are you making the most of your tax free investments? Currently you can invest up to £10,680 in a stocks & shares ISA per financial year, many people don’t use this allowance. ISAs are a great way to save for your future as all growth is tax free. Again we can make sure you are invested in the right funds, and review this for you as an ongoing service. Once your finances are in place you can review the values and performance on our online client system, enable. The system keeps you in touch with your money and allows you access to information and values at all times, for all your plans and in one place.

This can all be clarified for you. you could be paying for something which is no longer relevant to your situation, or if you arranged the policy directly you could be overpaying. Why pay for something which you don’t actually need? What to do? If you would like a simple, independent review of things, please give me a call. I can arrange to see you at home if you need. ontinuing with the theme of sports performance, a coach, Frank Dick once stated: ‘There are four fears that can seriously impede a sportsperson. These are fear of losing, making a mistake, rejection and embarrassment’. Any excessive or irrational fears can be identified and then rectified using hypnotherapy, to allow the individual to focus on the important aspects of the sport itself. negative thoughts lead to negative beliefs, lead to negative performances. Beliefs are constructions of the mind. They can be deconstructed using hypnotic techniques. Memories of previous failures are usually remembered with the same emotional content as at the time of their creation and can be a powerful hindrance to success. There are several techniques that can quickly and easily take the emotional sting out of such events, so that they become simply memories. Clients are also encouraged to focus more on past successes, both consciously and subconsciously. Relaxation techniques, including selfhypnosis can be taught, to allow for the best possible mental preparation prior to a competition. In addition, help with getting into ‘The zone’,
