Does your Will protect against these seven ways your family can be disinherited?
I
f you’re in the minority of people who have made a Will, you probably believe that it is enough to ensure that your wishes are carried out after your death. Not necessarily. Your Will may contain loopholes that result in your chosen heirs being effectively disinherited. Don’t take that risk. Check below to see if your family’s inheritance is as safe as you think.
1. Costs of Care
If you need to go into a retirement care home, and have assets of more than £23,250, you’ll have to fund your own care, which can typically cost up to £1,000 a week. If you’ve made no provision for this, your home may be sold off and thus lost to your family.
2. Estate Taxes
Despite the changes of 2007, Inheritance Tax is still a serious worry for many whose house and assets are worth more than £325k. A Will can’t protect your family, but estate planning can.
3. Remarriage
If a spouse dies and the surviving partner remarries, a Will may not be enough to protect the inheritance of children of the first marriage. If a child marries and predeceases their spouse who then remarries but dies first, your family’s wealth can pass to a total stranger.
4. Divorce
Can you be sure that your children will never be involved in a divorce? If they are, your Will may not be able to protect your legacy to them.
Robert’s mother died when he was ten. After a while his father remarried and when he died, everything passed to his second wife. Provision for Robert was left to her discretion — he got nothing at all. When he asked if he could at least have his dad’s war medals she said ‘No. They’re mine to keep or sell as I like and there’s nothing you can do.’ 5. Creditors
7. Your Business
How do you protect your share of a business and what’s the most tax efficient way of leaving it to your heirs? An effective way to meet both goals is to make a Will linked to a cross-option agreement and trust.
Family First
With some elementary estate planning — a Will linked to a family trust — your wealth can be made secure for your family. It’s not hard to arrange but, given that everyone’s circumstances and needs are unique, takes some thoughtful planning. Happily, the costs are modest compared to the value of what is at stake. If you’d like to discuss ways of protecting your family’s inheritance, I’m happy to offer you a free initial consultation without any obligation, at my office in Hove, or wherever suits you best. I do my best to explain things simply and clearly with no jargon. Please do give me a call. I’m here to help.
If a surviving partner or children are in debt, or face bankruptcy their inheritance may vanish. You can guard against this but it’s unlikely that a Will would suffice.
6. Special Needs
If you leave money to someone who has special needs their entitlement to benefits could be lost unless you’ve made full and careful provision for them. An ordinary Will is not able to do this.

Local girl gets through to regional finals of UK’s biggest music competition
L
ocal Worthing resident Ellie Earl (aged 14) passed the audition process for open mic UK, getting through to the next round of the regional finals. The regional final is to take place on Sunday 23rd October in Portsmouth where Ellie will be competing against the top unsigned acts from our region, showcasing her talents in front of top judges from national radio, BBC introducing, regional press and record labels as well as a live audience. If Ellie is successful she will
win a place at the National showcase grand Finals where she would be performing live at the 02 London to an audience of over 2,000 people! The finalists will be performing to a top industry judging panel including celebrity judges in a bid to be crowned ‘UK’s best on the mic 2011’. Along with the title the winners will be given a comprehensive package, recording contract and up to £30,000 investment. Ellie has auditioned for the competition before but has never gotten this far. She has been practicing hard on her vocal and performance techniques throughout the year in a bid to wow the judges. She attends vocal school Vocademy where she was also recently given the opportunity to perform live on air on BBC’s radio Solent and local event, Worthing’s Birdman, through the school. Ellie says “It’s a great opportunity for me to get through to the regional finals of open mic. I have dreamed of singing since I was tiny, and have tried for open mic before, but didn’t get this far, so it’s really exciting!!” Good Luck Ellie!
HENFIELD TRADERS DECLARE HIGH STREET A ‘GLOOM-FREE’ ZONE
T
raders in Henfield, West Sussex, have launched a campaign to end the wave of pessimism caused by constant news reports of recesssion. Members of Henfield Enterprise, Henfield Community Partnership and the Parish Council have declared the High Street a “gloom-free zone” Announcing plans for a three-year programme to revitalise the economy of the village a joint statement said: “News reports paint a bleak picture so traders have to fight back with positive news to beat the gloom. “We declare Henfield High Street a gloom-free zone where we will meet customers with renewed energy, enthusiasm and cheerfulness.” Budgens manager Andrew Warnes said they were dropping the prices of around 2,000 items to compete directly with out-of-village supermarkets such as Tesco. “In Henfield we have a very good relationship with our customers and great loyalty. Dropping prices on everyday items is our way of thanking those customers. Enterprise chairman Mike Beardall said: “Henfield businesses may be suffering as a result of uncertainty
affecting many people who are not spending money – but there is no reason why we cannot make the Henfield shopping experience a good one. “We have excellent pubs and restaurants and good public transport, so there is every possibility of attracting people from outside the village to sample what we have to offer.” They also have a shop window display competition which culminates with judging by a local celebrity to coincide with Henfield’s Spirit of Christmas event on Friday December 16.
Don’t forget to enter our Design the December Cover Competition! Open to ages 6-11 – Win a £25 token for the Steyning Bookshop! The theme is *What Christmas means to me* Get your pictures scanned in by deadline November 10th! November 2011 • Village Living

The Butterflly Room at ‘Stone Circle’ Henfield
A
rriving in a fluster and a flurry as usual, I was almost immediately calmed by the gentle and soft ambience at the Stone Circle. Going through to the Butterfly treatment room, I sat down and put my feet into a footspa of lovely hot water. Once I had relaxed I lay down on the table and Sarah got to work. I have been experiencing a lot of pain in my big toe, Sarah could see a black line down the middle of my toe which at the end of the session had completely disappeared, it was massaged and manipulated and I haven’t even had a twinge or a click since… Using the pink Moog wax, containing the essential oils, lavender and peppermint, which have been shown to have the greatest effect in the treatment of headaches and migraines. Lavender is a great soother and sedative while peppermint is a stimulant. Sarah was drawn to the pink she told me, which was perfect as coming down with a nasty cold I was feeling headache-y and fluffy headed! Traditionally Thai Foot Massage is a unique blood circulation and releasing tension of the nervous system, helping to prevent and treat diseases that occur in the body it’s a massage of the lower legs and feet that involves hands on stretching and massage to “open” Sen (energy) Lines, along with the use of a stick to stimulate the reflex points on the feet which correspond to the internal organs of the body. Thai Foot Massage stimulates these points to promote general health and well-being and the benefits of include the following – Improved circulation and toxin removal, stimulated lymphatic drainage and immune system boost, reduced stiffness and improved flexibility, accelerated physical healing, stress relief Improved sleep and clarity of mind. Massaging your feet realigns your chakra and gets everything back in its rightful place. After thoroughly massaging and using the wooden instrument gently on my feet, Sarah, massaged my tired calves and flexed my feet, warning me that she would be putting her fingers between all toes and flexing, it’s not something that bothers me at all but some people jump! I felt thoroughly relaxed and pampered at the end of the therapy, it is advisable to leave yourself time to relax and
*come to*. I felt a little light headed where all the toxins had been released, so sat and had a cup of tea with Sarah until I felt more ready to get up and go! Also it’s a good idea to drink lots of water to clear your body. Sarah is fully qualified and trained in the art of massage and holistic massage, Reiki, and many, many more spiritual and guiding therapies and treatments, including being psychically trained, and is constantly learning and moving up to the next level in her fields of expertise. She is calming, reassuring and very, very interesting! The Butterfly Room is like a time warp, you could (and I happily did) lose yourself in there for hours, it’s certainly a little slice of Heaven, here in Henfield… I will be going back for my next treatment – a Natural Face Lift as soon as I can! Book a treatment for yourself, your partner, and your best friend, they will thank you for it! Lasting approximately 1 hour, the cost of first treatment is £35 and £30 for any follow ups.

T
he Nail Station, new to Whispers is the latest addition to the Body Matters fold. Feeling slightly ashamed of my ragged fingernails I was welcomed by Debby of Whispers and her newest team member, level 3 qualified beauty therapist… Charlotte. Charlotte studied at Chichester college and has also studied theatrical make up, and ear piercing! I sat down and put my feet into a warm and bubbly foot spa with the lovely addition of rose petals. Charlotte worked on my toe nails with a range of Skintruth products, including a banana scrub, cuticle massage cream and lavender cuticle remover. Scrubbing away the dry and buffing up the new freshly moisturised skin was, I’m sure no mean feat but Charlotte sorted them out! I then soaked each hand in a bowl, while the other was scrubbed, buffed, massaged to perfection. Once hands resumed the appearance of a lady my biggest decision was what colour, what technique?! With all the latest Shellac, a tecqnique using a brand of varnish and UV light to seal the polish, it is expected to last chip free for approximately 14 days!!) Shatter, another popular new technique using the OPI range, Charlotte will paint your nails one colour, then paint over with another which will then ‘shatter’ giving a look of literally shattered glass!.. And don’t forget the ever popular French manicure, not to mention the rainbow of colours on offer, it really is a tough call deciding up one look to go for! All are on offer at the Nail Station, and with Charlotte you are in good hands! In the end after much deliberation I chose an OPI bright pink, beautifully named ‘Be A Dahlia won’t you’! with a top coat of coloured glitter – who says (nearly) 40 can’t be fun?!

Wadars
W
ADARS is a name I’ve been familiar with for many years but I didn’t know much more than the name and that it was a local animal charity. My chance to find out more about them came when Tony Thorn, Wadars Fundraising Manager, invited me to their offices in Durrington for a cup of tea and a chat. WADARS is the acronym for Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service and has been established in the area for over 41 years. It came into existence after the RSPCA office in Worthing was closed. Locals such as vets, councillors and animal lovers were concerned about the lack of an animal charity in the area and so sprang into action.
November 2011 • Village Living
By Ginette Stevens The charity and all the work it carries out is run almost entirely through volunteers with only a handful of staff to man the offices and carry out the animal rescues. The staff includes two office receptionists, two rescue officers, an animal transport officer, a charity manager and Tony. The two rescue officers (Vicky and Billy) are trained to be the first contact rescue. For wildlife this means that they assess the animal at the point of pick up and either take it directly to one of the local vets for treatment or straight to a rehoming centre. They have contacts with all the rescue centres in the area and the species that each deal with. WADARS itself does not have a homing centre but has built up excellent relationships with the local animal centres and vets which they regularly visit. The Charity covers a large area in West Sussex from the base in Worthing and whilst their main work covers Littlehampton to Shoreham and north as far as Ashington, Tony was keen to stress that there were no set boundaries. All animals warrant rescue from a tiny mouse or fledgling chick to a horse or deer. Nothing is excluded. WADARS is in existence to protect animals and their welfare and to this end it serves an important purpose within the local
www.villageliving.biz | tel: 0785 2231512
community. The rescue work they do falls broadly into two categories: wildlife rescue and domestic pet rescue. Wildlife callouts are attended by Vicky or Billy in their specialist animal ambulances. Sometimes the situation can be managed without anyone attending the scene but if this is not possible, a rescue officer will come out to assess and carry out a rescue. The injured animal is then assessed and either taken to a local vet for treatment or passed onto a wildlife rescue centre. WADARS also collect domestic pets in need of a new home or pick up abandoned or stray pets. These types of rescue are often initiated by the pet owner themselves. They may be moving home, or are ill and unable to care for their pet. If the general public call concerning someone else’s domestic pet, WADARS often call the RSPCA to help them or take over the situation – The RSPCA have the legal power to enter someone’s premises and remove an animal; WADARS do not. Once taken in by wadars, a vet will check it over and microchip it, give it a flea treatment and neuter the animal if needed. The pet is then moved to either a local kennels or cattery or passed to one of their fosterers to await rehoming. This is all funded by WADARS. If an animal is deemed unsuitable to go into a kennels or cattery (it maybe poorly or old), WADARS have a large support network of volunteer fosterers who will take in the animal until a suitable home can be found. Perhaps all this information has got you thinking that you may be able to give a rescued pet a good home? If so, your first port of call is to look at the WADARS website www.wadars.co.uk or call their offices on 0300 30 30 999. You can leave details of what you are looking for and when a pet of that type becomes available, WADARS will contact you. A home check will be carried out and then a settling- in period will be agreed (usually a month). After this time a second home check will be made by
Billy or Vicky to check everything is going well for you and your new pet. Some volunteers also carry out these checks, but mostly it is the animal rescue officers. WADARS remain the owner of the animal although they will not interfere with your care unless they feel a need to do so. you in effect become the pet’s fosterer. There are two reasons for this. Firstly WADARS remain in control of the animal and its welfare, allowing them to take the animal back if circumstances change. Secondly, the fosterer has a link directly into WADARS – if they get into difficulty (i.e. become too ill to look after their pet, or cannot
afford vets bills), WADARS can look to see if they can help immediately. It all makes perfect sense to me and is a really sensible way to keep the animal’s welfare at the top of the agenda. WADARS is a registered Charity and does not receive official funding – the money and time needed to keep this worthwhile organisation going needs to come from the likes of you and me, together with a some help from local trust funding and local business funding. Would you like to get involved? you can become a member of WADARS by calling the offices or looking online.
They are also always looking for new volunteers if you have some spare time. Why not run a stall at a local event? Tony has fundraising boxes ready to go with everything you would need. For you fun-lovers out there, WADARS are holding a Bands Night at The Dome in Worthing on Friday November 25th. Two local bands will be rocking the night away, and a raffle will also be held. Last year was a roaring sell out success so get your tickets in good time from Grove Lodge Vets (01903 223131). Doors open at 7pm, the first band is on at 8pm. And don’t forget their Dragon Boat Festival next summer in Worthing – get some friends together and give it a go! All details will be on WADARS website in 2012 or grab a leaflet if you see one. Now that sounds fun! WADARs website is www.wadars.co.uk and the office telephone number is 0300 3030 999. WADARS is a registered charity and numbered 257843

The White Hart Henfield Reviewed by: Ann Ellson
W
e were given a warm welcome on entering the White Hart, situated at the north end of Henfield High Street, and our immediate impression was of a friendly and well run establishment. The White Hart is a very old inn, which has managed to retain it’s presence as a local pub, but with excellent dining facilities, providing a good venue for both social and business purposes. The décor is traditional, in keeping with the old building, but with a modern feel to the dining area, with nice solid tables and comfortable chairs. We were struck by the number of diners for a Monday lunchtime, all ages with some very young ones, and the atmosphere was lively, with a pleasant background buzz. Tables are well spaced, so that neighbours conversations do not intrude. We were presented with interesting set menus for lunchtimes at £10 for 2 courses and £15 for three courses, but we decided to plunge into the a la carte, which provided a really tempting selection, including some options for vegetarians. This menu provides a good choice of pre-starters to get the taste buds going while choosing. Starters are priced at £4.95 - £6.50, with mains at £9.95 to £17.25 for a special aged ribeye steak. Of special note are the cold cut mains with pan haggerty, something not found in just any restaurant. In addition to the main meals, there is a good choice of lighter bites of various ‘plates’ such as Sussex cheese, Spanish, and Vegetable Antipasti, (£7.95 or £12 to share) plus ciabatta sandwiches (£5.50 to £7.25). All of this is complemented by an interesting specials board.

We deliberated over our choice of food with white wines by the glass, a Sauvignon and a Chardonnay, both of them excellent and very reasonably priced. There is an extensive wine list should you wish to be more adventurous. I started with a leek, stilton and cider soup with cheddar toast – which seemed an intriguing combination. Whilst looking rather bland on presentation, the excellent combination of flavours of this thick soup topped with a cheesy toast really started my meal off well. My friend went for the tiger prawns tossed with lime, fresh ginger, coriander and garlic butter – this was excellently presented, with a generous number of large succulent

prawns in a garlic butter which gave off a delicious aroma. This was pronounced the best prawns ever! For the mains, I went for the Sussex Smokey – smoked haddock and prawns in a creamy cheese sauce, served with a mixed leaf salad and chips. This arrived piping hot, with a generous side portion of chunky chips which were very crisp. The salad was very well dressed with the White Hart’s own delicious special dressing – Mojooss, which is also marketed in local food retail outlets. The cheesy sauce complemented the fishy taste of the chunks of smoked haddock and prawns, and I found this dish very well balanced and delicious. My friend chose char-grilled chicken breast marinated in virgin olive oil,

I would have thought that chicken breast would be quite an ordinary choice out of such an interesting menu, but not at all. The meat had been flattened out and marinated to the point where, with the combination of chargrilling, it was said to be the most succulent and moist chicken ever tasted. We could have been tempted by the delicious looking dessert menu, but our previous two courses consisted of such generous portions that to push the boat out further would have been to spoil what we had already enjoyed. So we finished off with a generous cafetiere of freshly brewed coffee, while people watching from our window table into the High Street.

Port & Cheese Nick Hempleman: Owner of The Sussex Produce Company, award winning produce store in Steyning, West Sussex.
O
ne of the lovely things about running an independent food shop is introducing people to products from some of our wonderful farmers and suppliers. Producers who take real pride in what they produce are a rare thing and it is fantastic that there are enough customers out there prepared to support them and in some cases pay a little bit more for real quality. Regardless of how we promote these products there is nothing better than actually meeting the suppliers themselves and so we are really excited that following the success of our wine tasting evening, we are hosting an evening on the 24th November with not one but two fantastic suppliers. Port wine is produced exclusively in The Douro Valley in Portugal and one of the very best Port houses in Douro is Niepoort. Headed by Dirk Niepoort the fifth generation of the family to run the business, he is an incredible talent (and maverick) and his amazing fortified wines are sold in only a handful of outlets in this country – including of
course our own! Raymond Reynolds (Niepoort’s UK importer), will be coming down for the evening from Derbyshire and will introduce us to some of their ports and dessert wines. We have paired him that evening with Srdja Mastilovic (pronounced Serge) who works for the famous Neals yard Dairy in London and knows everything there is to know about cheese. He will be talking about some of their amazing cheeses such as Colston Basset Stilton (perhaps the best
in the country), Montgomery’s Cheddar (that has won so many awards) and some seasonal favourites to put on the cheeseboard this Christmas. Tickets for the evening are £10 but if you would like to book a table for something to eat (and keep the table for evening talk), then why not consider an early supper with us? Served at 7pm we are doing a special meal that evening for £8.95 per person. The talk starts at 7.45pm – if you still have room!

27 • GARDENING
Wrapping up for Winter
T
he onset of winter can be a depressing time for many gardeners, even more so if your garden is full of plants that are used to living in a milder climate. There is no need to panic because with a small amount of effort you can put your mind at rest and help your plants to have a snug winter. Starting with the ever popular tree fern, Dicksonia Antarctica is a magnificent plant and is by far the best for cultivation outside in the UK. We need to give the fern some protection from the worst of the winter, so here goes! 1. Gently place straw into the crown of the fern, remember not to push too hard or the delicate new fronds (crosiers) inside will be damaged. Protection like this is all that is needed for most gardens in the south and other reasonably mild gardens across the UK. 2. In colder areas of the UK or in a period of penetrating cold or heavy snow then gather the leaves up around the crown and tie them up. 3. After tying the fronds together wrap the whole of the plant in layers of frost protection fleece. The number of layers will depend on how much protection
is needed. Some other half hardy tree ferns would also benefit from a layer of straw under the fleece. 4. Tie the fleece up with twine. As you can see the fern is warm and snug. All half- hardy ground ferns can also be treated in this way with straw and/or leaves, anything to keep the frost away from the crown while being able to breathe. Onto the Bananas and Gingers there are a wealth of truly incredible herbaceous plants that can be grown in the UK with massive foliage and stunning exotic-looking flowers such as bananas, gingers, and Cannas. They can be planted in their pots until winter when they can be lifted and placed in a frost free greenhouse or shed. Cannas and Gingers are best protected by cutting them back to a few inches above ground and then covering with a layer of straw or good compost to a depth of at least a foot or more in colder areas. Hardy bananas can be treated in the same way but if you want to keep the height gained over the growing season the trunks will need to be protected as illustrated below. Please bear in mind that there are many variations
Hole Street, Ashington. RH20 3DE. 01903 891466
for wrapping plants for the winter and the directions given below are just for guidance ! 1. After the first mild frosts cut all the leaves off the banana just above the top of the stem. 2. For example protect two stems of the clump at the same time positioning the Banana with bamboo clumps protecting it from strong winds. 3. The next step, create a pyramid of bamboo canes around the trunks using three or four canes. The top of the pyramid should be at least six inches above the top of the trunks. 4. Tie the canes together at the top with strong twine or wire. 5. Fill the pyramid up with straw, being careful to surround the trunks completely without damaging them. 6. When the canes are full, wrap twine around the structure to keep the straw in place. 7. To finish, fleece can be wrapped around the canes and securely tied this will offer even more protection to less hardy plants and stop the straw being pulled or blown out. For larger plants use BIG canes or timber pallets securely fixed together. Just a couple of examples, for more plants and any more questions then please just give us a call or e-mail us we will always do our best to help.

Mind & Body Chris Jones Cognitive Therapist and Mind Coach, Southdowns Hypnotherapy
NLP Master Practioner, MNCH (reg)*
cognitive hypnotherapy & Stress
O
ur approach is significantly different from the traditional schools of Hypnotherapy. As Cognitive hypnotherapists, we draw on recent discoveries and ideas from Evolutionary Psychology, Positive Psychology, Cognitive theory and NLP and incorporate them into a modern idea of hypnosis to provide a framework for therapy. We do not advocate one single approach as the answer to all of life’s problems. We use a range a range of techniques, drawn from different disciplines, that we have found to be the most effective tools for change so far. These are moulded into an approach tailored for the specific needs of each client. In our view the subconscious mind acts as a protective device whose purpose is to keep you safe. Moment-to-moment it is processing millions of bits of information received from your senses and filtering them with the purpose of determining what in your environment is likely to bring you pain or pleasure. Without our ever realising it we will find ourselves motivated to move towards things (people, activities, behaviour) which our unconscious believes are good for us (on the basis of past experience), and avoid things it believes bring us harm.
If any aspect of modern life is viewed by the unconscious as stressful, it treats it like a threat and the fight or flight response is triggered to get you away from it. So, for example, going to pieces in an interview is actually the struggle between your unconscious trying to get you away from that situation and your conscious fighting to stay put. you can see why a basic assumption we use is “all behaviour has a purpose”; even when that behaviour is having a negative effect it has a positive intention behind it. This model of mental functioning can be used to explain the basis of many problems. Even smoking. If you had an experience when you were younger that led your unconscious to believe that smoking was a good thing (like it made you feel like you ‘belonged’), then it will continue to motivate you to crave cigarettes, no matter how much you consciously wish to stop. It can be a mystery to us why we get locked into behaviours, beliefs and habits which we know reduce the quality of our life. It is because the unconscious tends to keep the thought patterns that generate them out of our awareness, and recent research has shown that the subconscious mind is responsible for about 90% of our daily behaviour.
In Cognitive Hypnotherapy, we believe that trance states are part of the normal experience of being human – as research suggests. We spend most of our day in some kind of altered state. Most people experience their issues as being beyond their control, as if some part of them takes over and makes them have the cigarette, eat the cake, run from the spider or go sick rather than give a presentation. As already mentioned, this is a consequence of their unconscious trying to keep you safe, and it uses trance states to make it possible. In a way every time you do something you can’t control you’re ‘hypnotised’ by your subconscious into seeing, feeling or doing things a certain way. In Cognitive Hypnotherapy we see our job as helping you to de-hypnotize’, so that you have control over those aspects of your life that you want to be different, and are able to see, feel or do whatever gives you the greatest freedom. If trance states are part of the pattern of your problem, then they are also a powerful part of the solution. for more information on cognitive hypnotherapy, visit: www.questinstitute.co.uk or my website: www.chrisjones.uk.com.
