Conscience comes to Stevenage this month
Adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name, the play Conscience will be on show for one night only at The Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage September 27th, before moving on to the west end of London.
Conscience is a story about a self-obsessed, bitter middle-aged woman, a compassionate teenage girl with a cross to bear and a misogynistic retired police officer – three people with nothing in common find themselves trapped together in a hell of their own making. As the story unfolds we see they are not so different. This is a fictional story based on actual events but where does the fiction end and the truth begin? Written and directed by Codicote based Comedian and author Johnny Tait, Conscience opened in April this year to critical acclaim, and has kept the audiences spellbound. Described as taking the audience on “An emotional rollercoaster with a dramatic twist at the end” “Conscience” is sure to have theatre goers at The Gordon Craig riveted to their seats. Disgwell Arts Trust supporting emerging artists
The Digswell Arts Trust is an innovative charity that for over fifty years has focused on artists in the early phase of their careers. Through their studios in Letchworth, Stevenage and Welwyn, they provide studios for approximately forty emerging artists, whom they call Fellows. Rather than being a studio provider; they are an incubation platform for emerging artists. The first years of attempting to make a living from their art are challenging, and often involve developing a wider set of skills outside of their art practice. In addition, their art practice must also continue to develop. Digswell Fellows experience a collaborative and supporting environment that offers for a three – five year period, the space to experiment and innovate within a creative community of other Fellows that are developing both their art practice and their wider commercial skills. The Digswell Arts Trust has a long tradition of artists working in the community, derived from the early vision of our founder, the educationalist Henry Morris, who believed passionately in art for people, and maintained that artists were vital for the well-being of society. The Trust has a committed administration, that both cares and understands how artists minds work. They strive to maintain the correct balance between the expectations of what Fellows have committed to do and understanding that occasionally individuals may need time to flourish. Leather is a natural product so it will improve with use and the colours will mature to become rich and deep. There is no menu of pricing as each bag is unique and will need more or less time and leather depending on the style. his month I visited Codicote’s Indian Restaurant – Codicote Spice to sample some of their new dishes. Based on the high street near the Bell Motel, the restaurant offers a warm and cosy atmosphere with 2 seating areas for up to 54 guests. I was welcomed by Dinar who has been running the restaurant since 1996.The chef has over 35 years experience and has been there from the beginning. Dinah told me “We have very high standards and are proud of our 4 star hygiene rating.We use the best quality ingredients and serve generous portions. As well as offering a great range of traditional Indian dishes, we have a large selection of exclusive special dishes such as King Prawn 14
Delight and Lamb Passanda.This month we have added some new dishes to the menu including Chicken or Lamb Rongpuri, cooked mild to medium with button mushrooms, fresh garlic, ginger and coriander and Fish Kofta Masala, an Indian fish (talpia), which is made in to spicy balls with crushed garlic, ginger, cadomen and coriander, and served mild to medium. If there is something that is not on the menu that the customer would like then we will prepare it for them.” I was served Bonoful King Prawn as a starter which was two large beautifully cooked prawns with a lovely crispy coating of Indian Lassi with spice and eggs. For my main course I was recommended the Lamb Nagra, a fairly hot Indian Chilli dish.The

lamb was really tender and the dish was on the hot side and full of flavour. I had a side of Saag Motor (spinach and Indian peas) along with a garlic Nan. Both of these side dishes were delicious and perfectly complimented the curry. I really enjoyed this meal and it made a lovely change from the usual dishes that I order. If you fancy trying something new, have a chat with one of the waiters who will be happy to recommend something based on what you like. All dishes can be adjusted to your own taste with different levels of spice and heat. We caught up Pat Harley who was eating with her sister and friends, she told us, “I’ve been coming here for years, the food is always lovely and the service is great.The staff are very polite and friendly and we always have a nice experience.This is a place where you can take family and friends.We’ve had the Banquet tonight which is really good value for money!” Codicote Spice has been established for 15 years and is open every day 6.00pm to 11.30pm and 6.00pm to 12.00am Friday’s and Saturdays. They also offer a takeaway service. Every Wednesday is Banquet Night were you can enjoy a starter, a main dish, a side dish and a Nan or rice for just £9.95. Spirit of Tring 2012 – Two great evenings of first class entertainment within a 40 minute drive of Tewin

ring based business services company Grass Roots is staging the third Spirit of Tring music festival on Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd September 2012. The not for profit event hopes to build on the momentum from June 2011 when 5,000 visitors flocked to the Grass Roots Stadium, home of Tring Athletic Football Club, for two days of pop and classical musical. Last year’s show has recently picked up three national awards in recognition of the event’s contribution to the local community.This year’s event is to be held right next door on Pendley Activity Meadow.The use of this space has generously been provided by Pendley Manor – new event sponsors for 2012. 16

The Friday night will kick off at 6pm with winners of Play Live, the local youth band competition, created by Grass Roots for last year’s show.The winning bands came through an X Factor style judging process and are;The Lights, Ego Trip and Soulshaker – each hugely talented and picked from different age categories. Local band Alibi will then get the crowd up and dancing as the official support act.The party atmosphere will continue with the main event of the evening – Cool Britannia – a West End style celebration of great British rock and pop from throughout the Queen’s 60 year reign. Stars from the London stage will have the whole family up and dancing before a firework finale to round off the evening. On Saturday it is the turn of the English National Orchestra who will deliver a special Great British Proms evening from 5pm. Star conductor Jae Alexander will lead the orchestra through all the traditional proms classics and there will be a welcome return visit of an original WWII Spitfire, taking to the skies in a spectacular fly-by, choreographed in time with the music. While Grass Roots generously continues to underwrite the costs of staging the event, local schools and sports clubs will again be given the opportunity to generate much needed funds through ticket selling and operating food and drink stalls inside the venue. The 2012 event was originally planned for the Jubilee weekend of 2 & 3 June but organizers had to postpone due to the huge amount of competition in the local area. The new September dates appear to be much better for many local people and Grass Roots Chairman David Evans hopes for a bigger and better show than ever before, ‘The entertainment is world class and you don’t have to get on a train into London for it! The local groups involved benefit hugely from the funds raised so we hope that many thousands of people will come and support their community whilst having a great night out with all their friends, family and neighbours.’ Come along and join in the fun on Friday 21 September – Cool Britannia – and Saturday 22 September – The Great British Proms!
