N September our HIA members, sponsors and partners from the Mackay region came together for the Annual HIA Housing, Kitchen & Bathroom Awards at the Mackay Grande Suites. The HIA Awards attracts, promotes and recognises the very best that our builders, cabinetmakers, designers and industry professionals have to offer. With design and décor changing all the time, these awards help to keep the industry up to date with new trends as well as set a standard of quality HIA members are renowned for. HIA Office Manager for Mackay, Judi Baker, said the homes, kitchens and bathrooms entered in this year’s awards ceremony were outstanding

and displayed a variety of designs and products. Rebetzke Homes performed especially well taking out the prestigious Home of the Year Award. The home has exceeded previous standards and reflected innovative design principles that are unique and practical. Rebetzke Homes was also successful in winning seven other categories including: Custom Built Home up to $400,000, Custom Built Home from $400,001 to $550,000, Custom Built Home from $550,001 to $650,000, Project Home over $300,001, Residential Building Designer of the Year, Custom Built Home of the Year and Project Home of the Year. Pacific Homes also performed well taking out the Display Home of the Year, Outdoor Project of

the Year and Display Home over $300,001. Higgins Designer Homes also took out three categories including Renovations and Additions, Project of the Year and Townhouse/Villa Development of the Year. Tyler Sutton of Higgins Designer Homes was awarded Apprentice of the Year for his positive attitude, enthusiastic nature and excelling in all areas of his carpentry apprenticeship. In the Kitchen and Bathroom Award sections, Nissen Quality Cabinet Makers took out Kitchen of the Year with a stunning renovation project that harmonised with the rest of the home. The new kitchen is also an innovative use of design and finishes such as Lemurian blue granite, made this entry especially unique and appealing. The Bathroom of the Year project was won by Premier Living Homes with an entry that portrayed both luxury and glamour while still remaining practical. A good use of space and product combined to make the entry an ‘eye catching’ award winner. HIA and their sponsors congratulate all entrants and winners of the 2012 HIA/Mackay Telegraph Housing, Kitchen and Bathroom Awards.

Excitement for Mackay’s housing industry

T

he Housing Industry Association origins can be traced back to the Melbourne suburb of Ormond in 1945 – just after the end of World War II – and a chance meeting between two local builders, Bill Hunt and Perce Newton, outside a real estate agent’s office where both bought blocks on which to build ‘spec’ houses. Building at that time was difficult because of an acute shortage of building material, so it was not surprising that their conversation focused on those problems. As a result of many things along the way, the Housing Industry Association (HIA) came into being in June 1965. Soon after, the industry’s unified and authoritative voice - and its distinctive logo - was recognised nationally. In 1987, HIA opened its Mackay office. In 2007, HIA moved into the Victoria St office which has a training/event facility for member ‘get togethers’ and industry training courses. In 2012, HIA made a further investment in Human Resources by engaging Judi Baker as the office manager and Brook Anstey as the new Business Development Representative for our Mackay operation.

Judi can be found in the office from Monday to Friday, while Brook is on the road working with current and prospective HIA members.

Why join the HIA? Are you working in the building industry? Are you looking to get into the building industry? Belonging to HIA gives you a competitive advantage and assurance that you are staying ahead of the forever-challenging changes of the residential building industry. You can concentrate on doing what you do best while the dedicated HIA team keeps you up-todate with all the latest industry changes and provides you all the tools you need – a first-rate partnership in ensuring your business success. HIA membership is vast and growing continually. It has over 44,000 members, including builders; developers; building trade contractors; apprentices; manufacturers and suppliers; kitchen and bathroom designers, fabricators, cabinet makers and installers, bathroom specialists, as well as the all-important “business partners” in the family business. As Australia’s largest building industry association, the strength and influ-

ence of HIA ensures your views and concerns are heard ‘at the table’ by all levels of government. You benefit from a stronger voice for the housing industry, greater lobbying power and better outcomes for your business. Wherever you operate your business you can be sure HIA will be there for you. Its experienced dedicated team of over 300 professional staff with local knowledge and national strength will ensure you get paramount support and professional advice on a wide-range of business issues. HIA Mackay offers many services for builders and contractors including legal, technical and planning and development advice. You are also able to purchase various contracts in plain English and general housing specifications, site signs, first aid kits and other products at special member prices. HIA Mackay also offers various training courses at discounted rates for members. These include the Cert IV Building and Business Management for Trade Contractors to enable a member to apply for their respective licences, as well as safety training courses and other short courses.

Workshops, training courses and 2013 dates for your dairy

T

he HIA office in Mackay not only has the annual awards day booked for 13 September 2013, but also a Business Partner Network Information lunch on 6 February at the Ocean International. The business partner member is a family or staff member helping an HIA member to run a small business in residential construction or manufacturing. HIA Mackay has a golf day planned for April 26 at Black Springs Golf Course and an economic outlook presentation in May. The aim of HIA is to provide the Mackay region’s members with the best service possible with a stylish Awards night plus information for the BPM’s (Business Partner Members eg wives, partners, Office Managers etc of the various builders, contractors and so on) – helping them to keep up to date with various areas of their business. Another objective is to provide imperative training classes for the contractors and sub-contractors in the Mackay region. On January 31, HIA Mackay has the first class of Cert IV in Building beginning in its Victoria St training rooms. With moderate levels of building activity in Mackay there are many contractors

who now wish to increase their qualifications and to apply for their BSA Building Licence. At present HIA are offering some tremendous funding incentives to help members achieve their goals. The Cert IV in Building takes approximately seven months to complete. The classes are usually on the weekend so that it doesn’t interfere with a contractors’ capacity to earn, while training and is one to four days a month. Judi has a few seats left for this course, so if you would like to enrol please do so as soon as possible. HIA Mackay is also taking expressions of interest for other courses such as business management and white card induction. In 2012, HIA was awarded funding by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education to undertake the YouthBuild Adviser Program. The predominant aim of this program is to pro-

vide information and advice to students about apprenticeships and career opportunities within the building and construction industry. As part of the program, HIA has been selected to conduct industry presentations in schools across the country to help potential apprentices make an informed decision about the right Australian apprenticeship pathway. With a large number of builders and manufacturers reaching retirement age, it is imperative that we educate our young people regarding apprenticeships, so that we can hand down the knowledge and skills our builders, contractors and manufacturers have accumulated over the years. If you need to contact Judi regarding any of these issues and events or would like more information, visit the Mackay office located on the ground floor, 224 Victoria St (opposite Dan Murphy’s) or phone her on 4957 5467.

Neighbourhood selection critical

8

L

OCATION is often quoted as the most important thing in real estate because you need to make sure your home is in a good location – for now and for 20 years into the future. But location is more than just a place on a map. A good location is also about the people. Suburbs are often associated with the people the people who live there. Nabilla Riverlinks Estate at Marian has maintained a high enquiry rate on the back of the quality neighbourhood that has developed there. With large blocks of land offering plenty of room for young families, the estate has maintained that “country atmosphere” that makes a good neighbourhood. Once thought to be a long way from town, the fringe areas of Mackay and small townships in the Pioneer Valley are now perceived as being rather close. Mackay is expanding and the newer population thinks nothing of driving 18 minutes to get to Mackay, which is shorter than the drive from the northern beaches. Walkerston, once thought of as “out of town” is now considered a suburb of Mackay and Marian is the new Walkerston. What that means for home owners and investors is confidence in where Marian will be in another 20 years’ time. Marian already has good facilities with more to come. The supermarket at Walkerston is only a short drive away, as is all the facilities Mackay has to offer, and the new Marian Town Centre shopping centre will be opening soon. The main attraction, though, is the neighbourhood you won’t find in the city. A friendly, country atmosphere is where people like to live and that will ensure demand now and into the future.

A great location at Marian

T

HE satellite community of Marian has doubled in size over the past five years, thanks largely to the development of Nabilla Riverlink Estate. Marian, 16 minutes from Mackay in the Pioneer Valley, boasted 698 homes in the 2011 Census and the number is rapidly increasing as Nabilla Riverlink Estate sold-out its original 321 allotments and commenced a 150-allotment extension to the original plan on adjoining land. Marian’s location has easy access to the mining boom in the Central Highlands and the industrial hub of Paget in Mackay. With an average allotment size in excess of 1000sqm across the estate, families are building large homes with side access, large sheds, and enjoying the extra space a big backyard affords, at a much more affordable price than living in Mackay itself.

Freedom to build the home you want

T

THERE is enough room to swing a cat. Yes, there is enough room to swing a cat at Nabilla Riverlinks Estate. Meggs, the Nabilla cat, was first used to promote the size of the blocks at Nabilla Riverlink Estate in 2009 when he was placed on a swing for signage. Since then, his antics on signage, print advertising and the radio have ensured Meggs a starring role in one of the region’s most popular estates. If there’s one thing that people want when they are looking for a block of land around Mackay it is space – and lots of it. With a great outdoors lifestyle and a high number of boats and jet skis in the region, the extra space for a shed and pool in the backyard (leaving enough room for a game of cricket) is ideal for a young family. The all important width of the block is ample too, with frontages at Nabilla Riverlink Estate allowing side access no matter what home design you choose. The extra space, as well as the lower price, gives you greater freedom to build “the home you want” rather than “the home you can afford” or “the home that will fit on the block”.

Home decorators heaven at Mackay Curtain Making 19 Deanne Pin, owner of Mackay Curtain Making, with the latest home decorating trends.

Y

OU will find a home decorators’ heaven when you step inside Mackay Curtain Making Service’s showroom in Lawson Street. The locally owned family business offers more than just stunning curtain fabrics and blinds. In fact, you will discover unique and exquisite handpicked homewares, wall art and furniture that you will not find anywhere else in Mackay and for affordable prices that will keep you within budget when decorating your home. “We have taken it that step further and have giftware products and furniture so that you can get

whole picture here in store,” Deanne Pin, director of Mackay Making Service, said. “A lot of people don’t release we have such an exquisite range of homeware products. It isn’t until they come in here for curtains or they go to someone’s house and ask ‘where did you get that?’ “We are trying to create a one-stop-shop. “We can do everything here if you wanted to, or we can just focus on whatever you came here for.” When branching into homewares and furniture, Mrs Pin said the main focus was to ensure products were affordable. “If the price scares me then it’s going to scare most consumers, so I just walk away from it and find things that I think are unique but acceptable prices for people,” she said. “Focusing on price point is really important for us. When building or redesigning a home people need to stick to their budget and they need to be realistic about what they are spending but at the same time have something unique. “We also try really hard to focus on trying to find things that are a bit different. I ask lots of questions such as ‘who else has got it in Mackay?’ “As we don’t want to see the same product in another shop and consumers don’t want to keep

seeing the same thing in every shop they go to.” Mackay Curtain Making Service offers a wide range of homeware products including vases, cushions, big pots, artworks, wall art, clocks and bedding. Furniture includes draws, table and chairs and the list goes on. Drawers with hanging art

Dress your windows properly

W

HAT’S on your windows is probably just as important as what you wear. What you wear often reflects the feeling, the mood, or the effect you want to create for yourself. For your windows, the concept is no different – your window has needs and these needs must be met. For Queenslanders, there are two major factors which come into play when deciding about what to hang up in the window. To decide whether to use curtains or blinds is a complicated choice in itself. But add the factors of shape, type, and practicality and you have yourself a decorating dilemma. Director of Mackay Curtain Making Service Deanne Pin said the most important issue to tac-

kle first was deciphering what you needed your curtains or blinds to do. “We ask our customers what their needs are,” Mrs Pin said. “Where is the sun shining in? Are their issues with privacy? These are the things that need to be clear.” Mrs Pin’s number one tip was to try to stay away from anything too bold as creativity could turn into a disaster. “We discourage people doing anything bold in window coverings because it limits everything around and will date far too quickly,” Mrs Pin said. So what to choose: blind or curtain? In fact, both can be used to create whatever you want in your home.

Curtains create a softer, warmer mood and are the best at blocking out the light. However, blinds are practical and easy to use. Whether you go with curtains or blinds, the decision doesn’t have to break the bank. “There are always things you can do on any budget to achieve what you want to achieve. It is good if people come in here and talk about their budget upfront because we will then know to steer them in a different direction but looking at what you need we’ll give you a mix of product to suit the home. We can always work to any budget,” Mrs Pin said. Mackay Curtain Making Service, located at 13 Lawson Street. The friendly team can be contacted on 4951 1129.

Mr Pedersen is a mobile lender and says his service goes above and beyond anything his competitors offer. “Firstly, I like people to know that in this environment and with the range of shifts that Mackay people work, I am available after hours, seven days,” he said. “I want to make it easier for people to get the right product for them and at a time that suits. “I am a mobile lender and because I don’t have a shopfront my overheads are lower which means I can afford to spend more time with my clients, making sure that they fully understand the entire loan process as well as the loan structure that they are choosing.” Mr Pedersen said his flexibility meant people could go house hunting on the weekend and call him straight away. “There is no waiting until Monday to find out if you can afford a property with me,” he said. “Even if they think it’s for a silly question, I am

happy to give them advice on it, even if it is nine o’clock at night, I will make myself available. “I pride myself on treating people like they are family members, not just a number.” Mr Pedersen has access to a range of products through more than 30 accredited lenders and said he was committed to finding the best loan tailored to suit every individual. “Every case and every client is unique in their own way. What might work for one bank might not work for another person, so it’s important to explore all the options,” he said. L’Amour offers a contemporary and stylish solution

L

’Amour Home is Mackay’s newest furniture and homewares boutique store. Owners Barry and Debbie Goodwin pride themselves in selling contemporary, stylish and exclusive furniture and homewares products, as well as an extensive range of gifts. Their products are of the highest quality, and inspired by the latest designer trends and fashions from all around the world and brought to Mackay at affordable prices. With their very own interior stylist, Debbie, customers have access to the best quality advice and ideas to new home buyers, builders, or renovators. L’Amour Home had the privilege of providing Pacific Homes with interior styling solutions on their winning HIA award home. L’ Amour Home’s company interior stylist Debbie Goodwin answered a few questions to help those who are unsure what to do when it comes to styling their new home. What was L’Amour Home’s role in creating this award winning home? I was contracted by Pacific Homes to provide the interior styling solution. This included supplying the furniture, soft furnishings, window coverings, artwork, rugs, decorative pieces and interiors for the home. I styled each room, making sure that there was a flowing theme of quality and contemporary style throughout the home. What advice do you offer those looking at styling their home? There are three simple rules I live by with my interior styling. 1. Less is more - clutter is an enemy of true interior style. 2. Make one piece in a room your focal point and then use other pieces to complement your feature piece, both with colour and style. 3. Have an overall theme throughout the home that can be tied in from room to room, a bit like having a story that is made up of its chapters. What are the current seasonal trends? Summer is all about colour. Bright pops of colo-

ur are definitely the seasonal trend. It could be bright coloured cushions, artwork, vases, or even a beautiful bright juju hat, as a statement piece, which is new to Mackay but so on trend in the capital cities. What services can L’Amour offer clients looking at building a home? What we specialise in is providing complete interior styling solutions for people that are building new homes. I consult with the customer to work out what type of style or underlying theme they want for their home. Or specifically, what story do they want to tell throughout their home and then we provide options to suit that customer’s style, taste and budget, and due to our myriad of both national and international suppliers, we are able to provide the complete furniture, soft furnishings, artwork and interior solution for the customer at an extremely affordable price. I am also an experienced colour consultant. In your opinion, what was the key feature in your design within the Pacific Homes display house? All of the rooms of that display home were very special, and it was a deserving award winner, however the master bedroom had the “X factor”. It had a beautiful French sitting chair, an elegant linen bedhead, it had a textured wallpaper feature wall, and the room was softened up by two natural hanging pendant lights. What products do you offer people looking to add something special to their own home? As well as our interior styling business, we also have our retail store at the Northern Beaches Central Shopping Centre. We sell furniture, artwork, homewares and gifts. The retail store always has beautiful products, and we have a very loyal customer base that continues to grow, however it is only a small sample of the range of products that we provide for our customers. Most of the furniture that we sell, we have sourced specifically for our customers who either want precise furniture pieces, or we are doing interior styling

solutions for. We also show a great variety of products on our Facebook page or our website at www.lamourhome.com.au Where do you source your products? We go to all the major national trade shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and this is where we have found a great stable of wholesalers that supply the most contemporary, unique and on trend furniture, artwork and homewares in the country. As well as this we directly import products from the United States, Europe, New Zealand, and we import Juju Hats from Cameroon in Africa. How did L’Amour come about? We have previously built, bought and sold several houses in the last 15 years and through this process Barry and I became very passionate about the interior styling of our homes, so I decided to formalise my passion, with the intention of working for a company in Mackay. We decided we would look to buy a Mackay business a few years ago, and we noticed that there was a niche in the market for unique, contemporary furniture and interior styling solutions, so we decided to start our own business and because most of the new homes in Mackay are being built in the Northern Beaches, as well as the fact that we live in Rural View, we thought the Northern Beaches Central Shopping Centre was a good fit for our business. What kind of shopping experience can people expect when dealing with the L’Amour team? Our business is all about customer service. Customers should expect excellent customer service, and the ability to help them find things that they will absolutely love putting in their home. One of the most rewarding things about our business is that the products that people buy from us are things they absolutely love and want in their home. L’ Amour in French means Love. L’Amour home is love home, and that’s what we help people do love their home and its contents. To contact L’Amour Home email: goodwin@ lamourhome.com.au or phone 4840 2274.

lled with the result...” one home owner said. “For the second time in five years we have had Rebetzke Homes build a beautiful home for us. “The professionalism of the entire team at Rebetzke Homes made the experience of building again so much easier.” Rebetzke Homes’ loyal and dedicated team of office staff, sub-contractors and suppliers has a common priority to deliver a quality construction to all of their new home owners.

Coastal Building provides top-notch service

Coastal Bulidings’ Gordon and Nerelle Heelan with administration manager Annie Kassulke.

I

T was gutted by fire, but Greenfields Shopping Complex building will be rebuilt by the end of 2013, thanks to the help of the local team at Coastal Building Approval Service. Private certifier Gordon Heelan, his wife Nerelle and their team have been working on applications for the demolitions of the three businesses which were burnt to the ground on November 10 and will help push through permits so building can start. The aim was to have it reopened by the end of 2013, Mr Heelan said. “We were on site last week with engineers and we have already started a three-stage plan to make sure the project runs smoothly and everything is approved as soon as possible,” he said. “First we sorted out getting Sam’s Warehouse opened temporarily by December 8 so they could capture the Christmas trade, then we issued a permit for demolition and now we are working with all the players, including tenants, to work out what sort of buildings they want there so we can get applications in for the rebuild.” It’s not the first high profile Mackay project Coastal Building Approval Service has helped turn into a reality. Being local means the team is often the first choice for people looking to make their building approval as simple and hassle free as possible. Since 1977, Mr Heelan has worked both in the building and construction industry and within local government and he and the team have the expertise to assist you throughout the approval process, from design, construction and applications. They take care of everything from total building

approval service, fast-tracking building approvals and electronic approvals to the coordination of boundary relaxation and oversize sheds. They can also coordinate approvals with local council including Material Change of Use (MCU) applications and pool safety certificates that meet the latest legislation. Out of hours inspections are available by arrangement if necessary. Mr Heelan said spending a little bit of time and money in the early stages of your project could save cash and heartache later. “I have met so many people who wish they had worked with us to make sure their project complies with the relevant legislation,” he said. “Unfortunately, a lot of people just go ahead and build and hope to get the certification later, normally that doesn’t work out and they are left out of pocket. “Working with us will ensure your project; whether commercial or residential will comply. “Our professional experience and knowledge will ensure that your project proceeds smoothly throughout the whole construction process. “And we are totally local, and when I say local I mean local. “We all live and work in Mackay, we hire local people and our profits stay in this region.” With affiliate and contract staff, Coastal Building Approval Service is able to provide building certifying services throughout the region, from Bowen to St Lawrence and out to Moranbah; including areas such as Sarina, Nebo, Marian, Mirani, Koumala and Carmila. “No job is too big or small – we can approve

anything from a garden shed, pool or house to a commercial development,” Mr Heelan said. For more detailed information on a particular service, visit www.coastalbuildingapproval.com. au. Email admin@ccbuildingapproval.com.au or phone (07) 4942 0266.

This is the second year in a row you have taken home this award, what is the secret to constructing an award winning home? The secret to our success is quality and dedication to the finer details by myself my staff our subbies

and our workers. We don’t use inferior products and we build to the highest of standards. Our homes are built above the required cyclone rating and each of the areas. We never build to W41C1, it’s always W50C2 or higher. Our plans are individually designed by myself and Stephanie (sales consultant) and we always try and achieve a free flowing home that encompasses the breezes and the type of lifestyle the owners want to have. The Display Home will reopen in 2013 at 10am Saturday, 12 January and the office will re-open at 8.30am Monday, 14 January. As the year is coming to a close and everyone has been rushing around finishing Christmas shopping, holiday preparations

Friendly down to earth staff and honesty. We will tell you whether a home you like will or will not fit in your budget. We do not lead the clients on a dream they cannot afford. Our quality is second to none, the best in town. Our inclusion in our standard homes is higher than the other builders’ standard range, for example the number of light fittings or sensor to the garage. All may seem minor, but they add to the overall cost later if added in and also when we include them the home looks of a higher quality. What services can Visual Construction offer those looking to build? We can build from our standard range or we can modify or even design a home to suit the client needs, budgets and wants. Turn your dream home into a reality today, pick up the phone and phone Ian and his team at Visual Construction on 4969 6279 or 0409 614 705. and finding odd jobs to keep the kids amused, the team at Visual Constructions has been busily applying the finishing touches to a few new homes to hand over, prior to the silly season, to happy clients. We would like to take this opportunity to thank-you for your business this year. It has been a dream to help you visualise your new homes.
