Furnished with the

Personal Touch Curtain Lab Soft Furnishings come from a designer with a difference. W1 Magazine’s Arthur Browne met Paula Trovalusci to find out more about her passion.

T

here’s little doubt that when your business revolves around the finest bespoke curtains, blinds, cushions and accessories you gain a big advantage from loving what you do. That enthusiasm for one’s craft came shining through talking to Paula Trovalusci, who capitalised on her love for creativity by becoming a fully qualified Soft Furnishings Designer and turning her talents to her own company: Curtain Lab Soft Furnishings. I wanted to get to the heart of what was different about Paula’s offering. She 8 W1-July2011.indd 8

summarised it as the personal touch: whereas many designers offer a service or a product in a style they like, she does the opposite by bringing to life a person’s true individual aesthetic style. It’s a philosophy which means she’s featured as a soft furnishings expert on Channel 4’s The Home Show. She points out that many interior designers are too busy with their own visions to remember the client’s desired look for a room or space. Paula, by contrast, knows that the best soft furnishings are produced

when she advises and interacts with her client throughout the process. And what comes out of listening carefully to the customer? Paula puts it this way: “Others want to sell their styles; I focus on yours.” And what she does with panache is soft furnishings. That covers furniture, accessories such as mirrors and anything to do with fabric. Taking the bedroom as an example, it’s not just the window area she can spruce up – Paula’s service spans loose covers, headboards, bed linen, ottomans, the bedspread, the cushions on the

magazine 2011 8/12/11 5:50 PM

Fashion Feature bed, and many other options. For the living room she can work wonders on everything from furnishing doors and windows to the throws on the sofa, such that the right colours are brought to the whole By Paula Trovalusci space. Elsewhere, in the kitchen some reupholstered chairs and a change to the table cloth or table runner in Trovalusci’s unique style will bring a dynamic new look to a room. Her influences are varied as she was born in Brazil and is married to an Italian. The result is a taste which is broad and constantly open to ideas, with the expanded horizons that come with having done plenty of travelling. She revels in her varied experiences as a way of overcoming the more fussy and traditional ways of thinking about interior design. As for her favourite colours, it’s the lighter pastel ones because they are timeless, elegant and can be freshened up with just a few dashes of inspiration. When asked about her two most formidable design challenges Paula explained they are bay windows and apex loft windows. The former because every bay window offers a million ways to dress it and the look must be right to be beautiful and bring the room together; the latter because apex loft windows are very shaped and therefore tricky to dress. She loves conquering that particular puzzle though, using techniques such as curtains which keep the shape of the window. And her final message to customers? Never be afraid to call in an expert. Interior and curtain designers aren’t as expensive as you’d think these days and it will save you money in the long run because it will cut out all the mistakes you’d make yourself. Paula will use her expertise to get you what you want and her network of contacts means she can offer a more competitive price for a range of interior design services. What that means is that in these austere times, freshening up a room with a change of accessories or soft furnishings can offer real value for money. After all that excitement I think I’ll have a sit down on that nicely dressed sofa.. www.w1magazine.co.uk 9 W1-July2011.indd 9

Make Me Beautiful, the specialists in non pierced and clip on earrings, to launch Zandra Rhodes’ new jewellery collection

L

ady Diana’s wedding dress, signature pink hair and her early punk styling, Zandra Rhodes CBE’s career has more sparkling highlights than a sequin dress, yet iconic moments linger on. Zandra Rhodes’ new collaboration with the queen of costume jewellery, Adele Marie, makes a renaissance of much of this early work, turning fabled fabric into statement jewellery with the typical boldness that characterises Rhodes’ style and is set to launch this month with leading online jeweller www.make-me-beautiful.co.uk. With it’s emphasis on prominent pieces, the Zandra Rhodes for Adele Marie jewellery collection features a number of large clip on earring matching sets, many emblazoned with the „ZR“ signature. It was therefore a natural collection to sit within the ranges of www.make-me-beautiful. co.uk who specialise in making women who cannot or do not want to have their ears pierced look every bit as stylish as their body modified sisters. Make Me Beautiful has sat pretty with television and stars alike with celebrities like Nigella Lawson to trend setting Shingai Shoniwa

being covered in the fashion press wearing Make Me Beautiful’s jewellery. The Zandra Rhodes for Adele Marie Collection is a premium costume jewellery offering that sits well alongside existing costume jewellery ranges such as Adele Marie London, Fiorelli and Rodney Holman. „Zandra’s career and style are a great source of inspiration to so many,“ said Make Me Beautiful founder Misae Richwoods. „How many 70 year olds do you know who can rock pink hair? Zandra’s bold, fearless energy defies age while maintaining an innocence of spirit that is sexy without being sleazy. Who wouldn’t aspire to have a piece of that?“ Finished in delightful packaging, the Zandra Rhodes for Adele Marie jewellery collection showcases the essence of the woman, reinventing her iconography in luxurious jewellery, including lines made in both the UK and Italy. Accessibly priced to offer all a little bit of fashion history, earrings start from £30 and there are co-ordinating necklaces and bracelets in some designs. More info and a gallery of all the pieces is available at www.make-me-beautiful.co.uk.

How to dress your

windows Curtains do more than just keep the light out. They maintain privacy, divide a room and provide a punch of colour and personality.

room. More modern are the eyelet curtains which have a simplistic, almost nautical feel.

Go Bespoke Buying curtains or blinds off the shelf may save money but badly fitting dressings stand out a mile and won’t always be fit for purpose. Why buy a blind which hangs an inch from the sill or a pair of curtains which don’t hang right? Going made-to-measure allows you to choose your ideal combination of fabric and shape for your room.

Tracks Are Key Just as important as the curtains themselves are the poles or tracks you hang them on. Choose a sturdy pole which will take the weight of your curtain without bending and which will suit your style – more decorative poles look good with eyelets or ties while simpler poles are better for rings.

Keep Curtains Out Of Kitchens In both kitchens and bathrooms curtains look fussy and out of place and gather dirt and moisture which leads to mould. Pick a simple roman or roller blind but add interest with a bold design to ensure your window doesn’t fade in to the background.

Try Non-Fabric

Y

et many people ignore window dressings when they redecorate, sticking to plain, ill fitting or just plain ugly curtains or blinds. Follow these tips to get the perfect look for your windows.

Consider Role Just as important as style is the role your window dressings will play in a room. Do you wish to block out light in a bedroom? Choose a lined curtain or dim out blind. Or is privacy of utmost importance? Then a bamboo blind or frosting (great DIY options are now available) may be better…

14 W1-July2011.indd 14

magazine 2011

Don’t Shy From Colour and Texture When you’ve spent time and money getting your room just right it’s a shame to simply hang a boring beige roller blind. A brightly patterned curtain or heavily textured blind can change a room from bland to bling in an instant.

Hangings Count When choosing curtains consider how you would like them to be hung. Gathered curtains on a rail can look dated but tab tops have a casual breeziness, a box valance is boldly luxurious while a rod and rings imparts a neat, classic feel to your

Wooden and bamboo blinds can look fantastic in modern spaces and make an interesting change from the usual curtains. In traditional homes, particularly those with large bay windows there’s really nothing as sophisticated as shutters – panelled or louvered to suit the style of your home.

Shade Glass Rooms Conservatories and sun rooms take the brunt of the sun’s rays. It can prove expensive to protect them with specially created blinds but it’s important to do so. Just an hour in the full sun can turn a conservatory in to a sauna, negating the price you paid for it in the first place!

lose online shoppers

When you’re out shopping and need to ask a member of staff for help how long would you consider too long to wait for the response? Most of us don’t like to be kept waiting at all and the same applies when we’re shopping online as well.

T

eIf you’re a retail surfer there will probably come a time where you need to ask the retailer a question to help you come to a decision about your purchase. But just like shopping offline, if you don’t get a relatively swift response you will probably look elsewhere. In fact most of us have a 24 hour time limit for online responses from retailers after which point we switch off, according to research by data capture agency Lifestyles Online. The study asked 7637 consumers about their expectations on response rates to online enquiries and revealed that most

Waiting for a response from an online retailer can be frustrating

of us won’t be kept waiting. While most high street shops would never keep customers waiting for more than a few minutes, its fairly common practice among online retailers to leave their customers hanging on for days sometimes. Many of us find this unacceptable and the results suggest businesses need to respond to online enquiries within at least 24 hours to retain their customers. Those of us who enjoy shopping from the comfort of our living room sofa expect an even prompter response if making an online enquiry about a specific product or

request. As many as 84 per cent said they would like a reply within at least 24 hours, while only 16 per cent felt that a response after 24 hours was satisfactory. However, online retailers should understand that getting back to customers within 24 hours is only a minimum requirement, as 36 per cent of us consider an answer within the hour timelier. Co-founder and director of Lifestyles Online Craig Carr says: „A business wouldn’t survive very long if it ignored customers’ questions on the shop floor. The same is now true online, as this research proves. Online leads, whether gathered from your website or captured externally, have a real prospect behind them and need treating as such. In fact we encourage and facilitate real-time responses to all online requests.“ Online retailers should take heed, as many of us will look to a competitor if we don’t receive snappy service. The research shows that 42 per cent of us will start shopping elsewhere, normally a competing business, after just one hour, while 19 per cent of us will expect a reply within just 15 minutes. While most of us would be frustrated at being kept longer than a day, the fatal mistake any online retailer can make is to not reply at all. Not surprisingly the survey reveals that if online queries are ignored, that normally signals the end of any further business from that customer. Internet retailers should take note, as 85 per cent of us say we would never return to a company that ignored our query.

an exclusive opportunity to get up close and personal with Land Rover’s smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient model ever before it goes on sale in September. Evoque Live was brought to life by Lee Lapthorne and Doll Productions (the company behind award winning shows including Clothes Show Live and Britain’s Next Top Model) using a fusion of creative talent including fashion stylist Harriet Jagger, designers Jasper Conran, Amanda Wakeley and choreography by Ashley Wallen. Commenting on the fashions responsible for setting pulses racing, all of which were inspired by different aspects of the vehicle, award-winning designer Amanda Wakeley said: “The Evoque is a truly iconic British car, so it feels appropriate that Land Rover has chosen to showcase British fashion in this way - as both are world renowned for their creativity and craftsmanship.“

With a stylish range of personalisation options both the coupé and 5-Door versions of the Range Rover Evoque give customers the opportunity to tailor their vehicle to suit their lifestyle. It is also available with a choice of powertrains, petrol and diesel, as well as six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Plus, for the first time in a Range Rover, the option of 2WD (front wheel drive) as well as 4WD. Producer Lee Lapthorne added: “I am proud to be behind such a groundbreaking show. It is a genuine first in terms of vehicle launches and delivers a unique audience experience.” The spectacular show moved to Birmingham (opened at the NEC on 27 May) and Manchester (opened at Manchester Central Convention Complex on 3 June) where it delivered the Evoque Live experience to over 10,000 people.

Online Tutoring Educates Kids in Developing Countries EducateNcare is an online personal tutoring service with a social good twist. A portion of each tutoring session’s cost helps educate children in the developing world, applying a one-for-one-style donation model into an online service.

E

ducateNcare is an online personal tutoring service with a social good twist. A portion of each tutoring session’s cost helps educate children in the developing world, applying a one-forone-style donation model into an online service. While this model has been used with consumer products before, what makes EducateNcare unique is that its “product” lives on the Internet. A network of certified teachers and college students work with individual students in recorded online sessions, allowing students and parents to review the lessons afterward. Each tutor sets the rate for his services, sending 25% of the proceeds to EducateNcare. After the organization deducts the cost of operations, which vary depending on the tutor’s rate, the rest of the money goes toward the company’s Global Education Projects. Note: There is some branding confusion on the website, as the organization is transitioning from using its original name EduCare into its domain name EducateNcare. TOMS Shoes popularized the one-forone donation model by sending a pair of shoes to a child in the developing world for every pair purchased. We’ve seen other web-based organizations such as Sevenly incorporate the model into their business

operations. But does a service-based version have legs? EducateNcare selects projects based on the likelihood of sustainability within the community. “Before we go into any of the projects, we have a meeting with the organization that’s going to monitor it,” says the EducateNcare founder Piyush Mangukiya. “We want to empower the local community to take care of the school.” So far, EducateNcare has given more than 800 tutoring sessions in the U.S. and a matching 800 lessons for students in

developing countries. In one of its first projects, the organization funded the creation of a computer lab for a school in Gujarat, India. EducateNcare is partnered with Pencils of Promise, an educational non-profit working in Laos, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Adding funding to its Global Education Projects, EducateNcare launched two educational apps two months ago: SAT Math Study Guide and ShapePuzzle4Good. Half of the app’s sales help Pencils for Promise build a pre-school in Guatemala..

UK top for

online holiday

bookings Capital attraction London is popular for short breaks.

While many people daydream of holidays to exotic destinations, a new study has revealed that destinations in the UK are proving to be most popular with holidaymakers who are looking to book their main 2007 holiday online.

18 W1-July2011.indd 18

I

t also reveals that a staggering 17 million people expect to book some part of their main 2007 holiday online. The study, Continental Research’s 2007 Holiday Online Planning Report , found that the UK was the most requested by the 20 million UK internet users who are planning their main 2007 holiday. The West Country, Scotland and Wales are expected to be the most popular regions in 2007.

For those going abroad, Spain has the greatest appeal, followed by the US, France, the Far East and the Caribbean. Colin Shaddick, director of Continental Research, says, „It is not likely to be a price issue that attracts online holidaymakers to the UK, as internet users are more affluent and younger than the population as a whole. They, therefore, have greater opportunities to travel. „What is noticeable is the UK holiday market has improved considerably in recent years, with innovative boutique hotels, well reviewed restaurants and stunning scenery being some of the reasons why people are rediscovering the UK. What’s more, it’s all on our doorstep.“ For those favouring a holiday abroad, the appeal of sunshine and beaches was given as the main reason. A greater diversity of reasons was mentioned by those intending to holiday in the UK. Shaddick says, „Clearly the UK’s hit and miss weather drives many holidaymakers abroad. However, the UK does rate favourably as a main holiday destination for other reasons. In particular, the opportunity to visit friends and family, stay in a holiday home and enjoy the mountains and countryside as well as having things to do for the children. „This mix of reasons will help the UK appeal to a wider market and explains its growing popularity.“ Other findings of the report are that the short break market is estimated to grow even further in 2007, with more people than ever booking online. In 2007, city breaks and visiting friends and family are set to be the most anticipated short breaks online users plan to take. The UK has a strong market for short breaks, with just over half of all internet users planning one. London and Scotland are especially popular destinations. Luxury hotels around the country have also created an attractive market in the UK for short breaks.

Zookeeper Griffin Keyes (James) works at a Boston zoo taking care of the animals, but while he’s great with relating to the lions, he’s not so hot with the ladies.

ventually, he decides that the only way to find love is to leave and get a more glamourous job to impress potential love matches. In a desperate effort to stop their kind-hearted caretaker from deserting them, the animals decide to break their silence and reveal to him their big secret - they can talk. Hapless but dedicated Griffin has never got over being dumped by his girlfriend Stephanie (Bibb) and when she comes back into his life after five years, he falls over himself trying to impress her. But while he’s busy doing that, he’s completely oblivious to the fact that his soul mate vet Kate (Dawson)- is working right alongside him at the zoo. To stop Griffin from leaving and to help him see the obvious, the zoo animals band together to help his romantic pursuit by teaching him about the rules of love, as

seen from their point of view. It’s all a bit formulaic, but the humour, while basic, works somehow. Adults will be entertained by the zoo animals being voiced by some very recognisable folks Cher as a lioness and Adam Sandler as a monkey, to name but a couple, while the kids will be impressed with the sheer novelty of, well, talking animals. The answer to whether Zookeeper succeeds or fails, though, will fall firmly on the shoulders of James and his ability to make us sympathise with his character and root for him despite the glaringly obvious solutions in front of him. Thankfully, due in large part to the niche James has carved out for himself as a bit of an underdog, we do. It’s never going to win any awards, but it’s an entertaining and likeable summer family movie that will appeal to adults and kids alike.

Horrible Bosses

Credits Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx Director: Seth Gordon Rating: 15

There’s an all-star cast out at play in this sharply funny, enjoyable comedy, but perhaps the most notable is Jennifer Aniston, who finally drops her good-girl image to play sexually voracious dentist Julia, just one of the three Horrible Bosses referred to in the film’s title. And clearly, she’s enjoying it - she should let the guard drop a bit more often.

T

he plot centres around best friends Nick (Bateman), Kurt (Sudeikis) and Dale (Day), all of whom have the misfortune to be saddled with awful bosses who make their lives a misery on a daily basis. As well as Julia, Kevin Spacey turns up as double-crossing nightmare Harken, while Colin Farrell puts in an almost unrecognisable performance as bald, overweight, drug-addled Pellitt. Eventually, the daily grind gets too much for our three heroes, and they concoct a plot to murder their respective bosses, ably

22 W1-July2011.indd 22

assisted by ’murder consultant’ Motherf****r Jones, played with great coming timing by Jamie Foxx. But of course, nothing goes according to plan and hilarity ensues. The funnies here work brilliantly thanks to great comic performances from a strong ensemble cast. As well as Aniston’s convincing departure from her normal image, Kevin Spacey turns in one of his best performances in recent years as Harken, and his sex-obsessed wife (Julie Bowen) is also very entertaining. Good support comes from Donald Sutherland in the form of Pellitt’s

boss, although he’s woefully underused in places. Director Seth Gordon (The King Of Kong) maintains a good pace throughout, with the laughs being liberally peppered and well-spaced, but at times the script seems almost afraid to venture into any kind of depth: obvious gags are favoured at the expense of any darker black comedy, which is a bit of a shame. But despite it being a tad shallow and oddly prudish in places, it’s worth a look for the performances. Recommended.

lectro-hypersensitivity, an unhealthy sensitivity to sources of electricity, was only recognised as a ’real’ condition by the Health Protection Agency as recently as 2005 and even now is not considered an acceptable diagnosis by the vast majority of health professionals, but for the sufferer living in a wireless world the condition is uncomfortable, debilitating and can even affect one’s ability to carry out everyday tasks. Due to the scepticism surrounding the disorder little research has taken place in the UK and indeed research from other countries conflicts: some suggests just a few cases occur per million, others that

as much as 5% of the population suffer from the condition. With little information available on the subject and few specialists taking an interest, not to mention the similarities in symptoms between electrohypersensitivity and other illnesses and allergies it is difficult to diagnose and it appears that sufferers often approach their doctors with the suggestion after years of tests and appointments when they uncover the condition through internet research. Caused most usually by personal computers electro-hypersensitivity is also often connected to mobile phone use and TVs while those living close to overhead power

not this can be proved is not known but something that cannot be argued is that those with EHS are commonly heavy users of electrical equipment such as PCs and mobile phones. Those who feel that they have electrohypersensitivity generally tend to avoid the use of everyday electrical items that can cause severe social problems, resulting in withdrawal from a normal lifestyle. However, an assessment of items in one’s own home or even a move to a rural setting, a simple, organic diet and plenty of exercise can almost certainly help, if only due to the slower and healthier lifestyle this affords. Medical professionals, how-

Headaches can be a symptom of EHS.

cables, mobile phone masts and electricity transformers are considered more likely to develop the condition. Symptoms vary from minor - dry, itchy eyes, burning or irritated skin (particularly on the face in VDU users) or headaches - to severe enough to cause a sufferer to take time off or even leave work permanently with irregular heartbeat, memory problems, tinnitus and even benign tumours reported. Researchers have noted an overlap between EHS and other ’modern day’ conditions, suggesting that electromagnetic fields could even be the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, autism and even Gulf War syndrome. Whether or

ever, suggest cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as well as neutralising chemical dilution, acupuncture, shiatsu massage and antioxidant treatment although none of these, with the exception of CBT, have been proven to have a significant effect. As with so many modern day maladies, EHS may come to be recognised as a serious condition - it’s easy now to forget that until relatively recently depression, ME and autism were often considered ’fake illnesses’ - but until then those believing that they have the condition can be encouraged that treatment, however rarely, is now being offered. www.w1magazine.co.uk 23

elebrities and fans alike are discovering the benefits of the unique gel formula. applied as an overlay or “coating” onto your nails by a qualified nail technician. The Gel is then cured under UV lamp, which dries it instantly guaranteeing no smudges and no waiting around. You are left with a permanent colour gel that is strong and flexible, with a glossy finish, which lasts for three weeks. The polishes can easily be removed with non-acetone nail polish remover taking you back to your permanent gel colour. Your gel will last up to three weeks, after which time the new nail growth will start to show and you will need an infill or alternatively you can soak it off and have a fresh set of gels applied. The gel is thin, strong and allows your nails to have the flexibility they need to carry out all your daily duties. Bio Sculpture Gel contains no Formaldehyde, Toluene, Acetone and

Health & Beauty Having beautiful hands is big business. They are the first part of the body to show your age and image-conscious women spend millions of pounds every year on products which promise to keep their hands looking young and wrinkle-free.

A

s well as smooth skin, nail art is the new must-have, with many women desiring mini works of art at their fingertips and happily spending hours - and money! - in nail bars having their talons primped, primed and painted with all the latest fashionable designs. Our hands are at the mercy of all sorts of everyday aggressors, from the weather to household detergents. We wear gloves for gardening so that we are not stung by nettles and scratched by brambles and we don’t think twice about pulling on our woolly mitts outdoors in winter to keep our hands safe from the cold and ravages of the harsh climate. But many of us neglect our hands when we are indoors. It’s not only cleaning agents that can be extremely harsh on both nails and hands; simply exposing them to water makes your nails swell and then shrink back as they dry, contributing to brittle nails. As well as beauty we need to be aware of hand hygiene, considered to be one of the biggest areas in the field of infection control, notably in hospitals, restaurants and care homes. Sanitized gel is widely used to combat germs. But making sure you have a regular supply of rubber gloves of various varieties means all you need to do is just slip on a pair to give yourself peace of mind that you are doing your best to keep those bacteria at bay and ensure your hands and nails stay looking lovely.

Be hand in glove for

Beauty & Hygiene

There are many types of gloves available in the marketplace, from heavy duty to lightweight and even close-clinging disposables which allow greater sensitivity and are ideal when preparing food, hand-washing delicate items of clothing or maybe dusting precious ornaments. Use the tougher gloves for heavy-duty cleaning: keep a pair in the bathroom and at least a couple of pairs in the kitchen for different tasks. As well as keeping your hands hygienic, another major bonus of using rubber gloves is that you never have to take off your precious rings to do your housework. We all know that washing up and other tasks can scratch and chip precious stones, loosen them from their settings or even result in them falling out and so many of us take our rings off beforehand. But one of the easiest ways to lose a ring is to remove it to do the chores and then forget where you have left it only to have it vanish forever. Investing in some rubber gloves not only saves your hands - it saves your jewellery too! Here are a few more simple tips to help keep your hands looking their best: Moisturise often with hand cream - keep bottles of it handy in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroomUse sunscreen lotion on hands to guard against ageing sun damage.Pat your hands dry frequently to avoid fungal infections.Use special treatments such as a warm oil bath and herbal therapies to keep your hands soft.Don’t use acetone polish removers as they dry out nails.Dip your fingertips in lukewarm olive oil for stronger nails.Do not remove cuticles - they are there to protect your nails from infection.Wear gloves at all times while doing gardening, washing dishes or any grubby chores to protect your hands from dust, pollution and chemical reactions.

ask whether our favourite celebrity’s formula for health and vitality is a load of rot. To help people make the right health choices for themselves, Professor Les Irwig, Judy Irwig, Dr Lyndal Trevena and Melissa Sweet have brought out a book entitled Smart Health Choices (Hammersmith Press, £12.99, www.hammersmithpress.co.uk). This is an essential guide to making sense of health advice. It arms the reader with a healthy scepticism as well as the tools for evaluating the messages they’re confronted with on a regular basis, whether those messages come from a specialist, general practitioner, naturopath, the media, the internet or a well-intentioned friend or family member. For instance, what’s the best way to unravel the scientific jargon used by health product advertisers? How can you tell the difference between a good, solid clinical study and a poor one? Smart Health Choices highlights why some health advice may be misleading and offers ways to identify meaningful health claims and research, and explains why it can sometimes be unwise to rely on the opinions of experts. It also shows the reader how to make the right health decisions by asking the right questions. The five most important of these are: what will happen if I wait and watch; what are my test or treatment options; what are the benefits and harms of these options; how do the benefits and harms weigh up for me; and do I have enough information to make a choice? Where your health is concerned, the absolutely essential thing is to know the facts before making any kind of decision, no matter how small. Smart Health Choices shows how to get to those facts rather than be overwhelmed by information that may, at best, be unreliable.

Events Guide

The Bribery Act 2010 What is the workshop about?

The Bribery Act 2010 seeks to strengthen UK law to prevent bribery by UK businesses. It introduces an offence of ‘failure of a commercial organisation to prevent bribery’. Firms convicted risk an unlimited fine and very unwelcomed publicity. However, firms will be considered to have a full defence if they can demonstrate that they have put in place appropriate procedures to prevent bribery. This interactive workshop will help you decide what risk your firm is exposed to and plan what you have to do to implement appropriate procedures.

Half Day Workshop

Sep 06, 2011 12:30 PM - 4:00 PM Please book: http://briberyact2010.eventbrite.com MWB 77 Oxford Street W1D 2ES London

Who should attend?

The Act covers all commercial organisations carrying out business in the UK, no matter what their sector. The workshop will be of most benefit to those individuals who are responsible for implementing and/or monitoring a firm’s compliance with the Act.

What are the learning objectives?

The aim of the workshop is to enable businesses affected by the introduction of the Act to protect their organisations from bribery convictions.

By the end of the workshop you will be able to: ■ Understand the objectives of the Act ■ Understand the offences defined by the Act ■ Analyse the impact of the Act upon your business ■ Apply your knowledge to be able to outline the procedures required by your firm.
