ith dappled light and autumnal colours, reminiscent of Claude Monet, Hydrangea follows the recently launched and hugely successful Tahiti range inspired by Gauguin. Peter says, “Hydrangea, known as the Christmas Rose in some parts of the world continues my Impressionist phase and represents my interpretation of pointillism in glass. I have attempted to capture the colours of the flower heads as they fade into subtle combinations of purple, blue and pink during autumn and winter”.

SMART
Mike Fromant - Contis managing director
T
he smartphone gift card programmes operate on Contis’s own established, dynamic payment processing platform and each programme is designed to suit the individual requirements and goals of the client. The smartphone gift cards operate in the same way as a traditional gift or prepaid card scheme with the added advantages of being instant, more flexible, easier to administrate and extremely cost-effective. Contis smartphone gift cards can seamlessly integrate into an existing, ‘traditional’ gift card programme or operate as a standalone scheme. They provide added value and a more personal buying experience for the end user as well as being secure, flexible and convenient: with a tap of the screen they can be bought, topped up or redeemed. As a result, gift card providers can expect to see improved customer loyalty, increased customer spend and a high return on investment (ROI). 8
Retailers, restaurants, hotels and all manner of leisure outlets can get smarter about maximising return on their gift card and voucher schemes as card solutions provider Contis launches the UK’s most advanced smartphone gift card platform. End users can be targeted via their phones with advanced promotional and merchandising opportunities and the gift card application can be linked to existing social media campaigns - enabling free word of mouth promotion via multiple networks. In terms of cardholder benefits, gift cards can be bought and sent in seconds via a smartphone and redeemed in store or online.
SMARTPHONE GIFT CARDS DEFINITELY REPRESENT THE FUTURE OF PREPAID CARDS. Cardholders can instantly track how much they have left to spend and, as accounts are PIN protected, the funds are secure even if a phone is lost or stolen.
The concept offers the ultimate in last-minute presents for customers whose phones are scanned at tills, where payment is taken. Contis managing director Mike Fromant said: “It’s vital that gift cards evolve to meet customer demand for instant, hassle free purchases that can be easily tracked. “Our new smartphone programmes are perfect for retailers, restaurants, leisure outlets – in fact, everywhere that a traditional gift card scheme could operate. As one of the few true end-to-end solutions providers, we handle the entire process in-house from designing the app to managing the payment process, and everything in between. Once in place, the programmes are cost effective and negate the need to buy supplies of plastic cards and incur postage costs and are therefore kinder to the environment and your marketing budget. “Smartphone gift cards definitely represent the future of prepaid cards.”

lickr is introducing geofences - a new feature aimed at helping users better manage the privacy settings around their geotagged photos. Geofences will enable people to limit who is able to see the location data associated with images they’ve taken from within a specified area. You can
easily create parameters around specific geographic areas by simply drawing a circle on a map and choosing a geo-privacy setting for that area. Users can add up to 10 geofences and set a parameter approximately 7-10 km wide. An early pioneer of geotagging with over 300 million geotagged
images on the site, Flickr is the first and only photo-sharing service to provide an advanced geo-privacy feature. Geofences furthers Flickr’s commitment to providing a rich, secure photo-sharing experience that gives users more flexible privacy options when geotagging photos. www.w1magazine.co.uk 9

Mums ditch the car for school run due to soaring fuel costs Cash-strapped London mums say they are ditching the car and walking their kids to school due to the rising cost of petrol, according to research.
T
he survey of UK mums, commissioned by Bridgestone UK, found that nearly one in three will now walk when taking their children to school because filling up the tank is no longer an option. Almost half of those surveyed said they have been unable to afford to fill their petrol tanks in recent times due to rising prices. When term began in September 2010 the average fuel price was £1.15 per litre, but because of global economic conditions over the last 12 months the price has rocketed to an average £1.36 – almost £6 per gallon, an 18 per 10
cent hike. Combined with a 27 per cent increase in 2009, the overall impact of a 50 per cent jump over two years has resulted in many mums opting to leave their cars on the drive. The situation could have been much worse but Chancellor George Osborne cut fuel duty by 1 pence per litre in his April Budget. Andy Dingley, Bridgestone UK Communications Manager, said: “Our research shows that people are sacrificing journeys because they simply can’t afford to fill up as much - and one of the first to go is the school run.”
A quarter of people surveyed said that the recession has already seen them sell one of their cars and a further third said that they were considering selling their car – purely because of the cost of fuel. Nine out of ten mums said they were feeling the pinch and three quarters were worried about how much it was costing to send the kids back to school this year. Mr Dingley added: “High prices at the pump, coupled with the fact that families have less money in their pockets will have an impact on not only how we drive, but how much we drive too.”

Northerners
Helping UK Holiday Market to Thrive NORTHERNERS are the biggest contributors to the UK holiday market after new stats reveal the North has the highest percentage of people in the country choosing to holiday in the UK this year.
F
orty seven per cent of Northerners are taking their holidays in the UK this year ahead of people living in Wales (41 per cent) compared to just 28 per cent of people living in Greater London who will choose to holiday in the UK. Londoners were also found to be the most likely to travel abroad for their holidays this year (72 per cent) compared to just 53 per cent of Northerners, making them the least likely to holiday abroad. The online survey by SMS, Survey and Marketing Services in Newcastle, asked UK residents about their holiday plans for this year and next, and found that Northerners are also most likely to be taking a holiday in general this year whether at home or abroad, along with people living in Greater London. Despite citing reasons such as the high costs of flights for not holidaying abroad, the UK economy is benefiting from all the ‘staycation’ holidays being taken by Northerners.
However, seemingly Northerners are also most likely to choose shorter breaks and holidays lasting less than one week, with 60 per cent not planning to have a holiday at all in 2012. Lesley Wright, head of Quantitative Research at SMS, said: “The research shows that Northerners value a work/life balance and will ensure that they save money and make time for a holiday, whether it’s abroad or at home in the UK. “With travel costs continuing to rise, and more limited flight destinations and choice of airports compared to those found in the South, certain holidaymakers in the North are being priced out of a foreign holiday abroad this year. “However, with the threat of redundancy, many people are choosing to sit tight and either save for next year or make use of the growing number of travel comparison sites and special deals that seem to be in abundance this summer for people who are prepared to book at the last minute. This has also been reflected in the method for which people are choosing to book their holidays instead of going through a traditional travel agent or tour operator. “Travel patterns are also changing with the traditional two week holiday no longer the case. Many people are choosing to spread their annual leave and the results show a variety of holiday durations indicating that people are preferring more shorter breaks across the year, as opposed to just the one annual fortnightly getaway.”

Vodafone and Justgiving Call on Britain’s Fundraisers to Sign Up to a New Way of Giving From today, anyone raising funds for their favourite charity can have their own unique Vodafone Identification Code (or VIC) so they can use the UK’s first free text donation service, JustTextGiving by Vodafone.
A
nyone over 18 can apply for a unique, VIC personalised textcode (e.g. LUKE01) which they can wear on their fun run, text to friends or post on their social network page. Each VIC is free to set up and manage, and every penny goes straight to their chosen charity. Gift Aid can also be reclaimed. The move comes at a critical time for charities that are facing crippling funding cuts from the government - estimated
at £110 million this year alone. Individual fundraisers have a crucial role to play to help plug that gap, and JustTextGiving by Vodafone is making it that little bit easier to raise funds. The news follows a specially commissioned survey from YouGov that revealed that: ■ In the last 12 months, only 1 in 5 of us (22%) raised money for charity ■ Women are more likely to fundraise than men (18% vs 25%) ■ However, men are more generous, donating almost twice as much to charity as women (£81/yr vs £43/yr) ■ Running for charity is the most popular fundraising activity with 25-34 year olds (25% of fundraisers), whilst the over 55s prefer to help collect
donations or work in a charity shop (21% and 16%) ■ Less than half (44%) of 18-24 years old give to charity compared with 80% of over 55 year-olds ■ When 18-24 year olds give, the amount is almost double the national average (£110 annually v £61 UK average), presenting a significant opportunity for text donations. Vodafone Chief Executive Guy Laurence said: “More than 12,000 charities have already signed up to use JustTextGiving, and hundreds more are signing up each day. Today is about putting the power of fundraising by text into individuals’ hands. Now individuals will be able to maximise their fundraising efforts for their chosen charity. Text donations are set to be worth £96 million a year by 2014 and through JustTextGiving we can help make this goal a reality.”

Get A Grip On Your Mobile Phone With
myBunjee The news has been full of stories of a brand new US technology that will save your mobile phone when dropped by deploying mini air-bags.
G
ood idea but surely a case of massive over-engineering? Horribly expensive and no-doubt cumbersome too with echoes of NASA spending millions on developing a ballpoint that would work in zero gravity whereas the Russians simply used a pencil. Following this example of Cosmonautical common sense an entrepreneur from Chester has developed myBunjee, a rubber device that slips over and secures any mobile phone on the market and prevents your precious phone from hitting the deck by clipping to your belt, jacket or bag by way of a coiled elastic cord. Weighing-in at a mere 10g, costing no more than a very affordable £6.95 and available in a range of colours, myBungee is ideal for literally anyone who owns a mobile phone – active kids, busy mums, forgetful grandads, cyclists, ravers, delivery drivers, extreme
14
sports fans, yachties, the list is endless. Bunjee has even been ordered by several regional police forces and fire brigades. Said Emma Jones the entrepreneur behind myBunjee: “I’m a little clumsy myself and just wanted something to stop me from constantly dropping my phone especially when I was sitting on a ski lift. I was amazed there was nothing on the market – it seemed such an obvious idea. I also saw some stats that suggested there were more than 350,000 insurance claims in this country last year for damaged mobiles*. It was clear there was a gap in the market for a cheap and simple solution.” myBunjee will be available from September in a range of colours including pink, orange, blue, purple and black. Stockists include Menkind, QVC (at Christmas), mybunjee.com and other good retailers.

of times to achieve continuous long term wellbeing, the end result is the same: a tangible step by them, and in many cases their family members as clients too, on the path to better long term health. Why does all this matter so much to Dr Hundle? He explains that in a stressful city like London, Lund Osler acts as a sanctuary and the perfect place to lose your stress. It comes from the guarantee of oneto-one service, a devotion to the customer experience and the space and time to ensure all treatments are therapeutic and relaxed. All the clinicians give great attention to

Lund Osler’s work has notched up appearances on everything from BBC Radio to Channel 4’s ’10 Years Younger’ and its blend of science, technology and art is loved by top designers and TV celebrities alike. But its clinicians are also there for the guy or gal who “just don’t feel happy” or who gets nervous about medical treatment. This all comes in a pleasant environment with opening hours to suit the customer in today’s busy world. Visit the website at www. Getting closer to the good life Summer’s over, the evenings are drawing in and you’re flicking through your favourite book on chickens or pigs, cattle or sheep, fruit and veg, and wondering when and if you really might be able to rear and grow your own food.
I
t might be a longed for ambition, but somehow you need a bit of encouragement, some solid advice before you feel ready to make the commitment. At South Yeo Farm West, just outside Okehampton on the fringes of Dartmoor, Debbie Kingsley and her husband Andrew Hubbard know just how you feel – they’ve had hundreds of hopeful smallholders join their courses, all eager for information and a real insight into what managing a smallholding is all about. And they must be doing something right as the emails and phone calls roll in saying “We’ve done it, we’ve
22
just bought a smallholding”, “We brought home our first pigs today” or “I don’t know why we didn’t do this earlier – we’re having the time of our lives, thank you!”. Debbie and Andrew run a range of smallholding courses throughout the year, and in the next few weeks you can join them on their Introduction to Smallholding weekend (15/16 October), Apple and Orchard Day, where you also get to pick and press your own juice (22nd October), and a course for smallholders on building and managing your own website (1st October). The courses all include a delicious home grown and home
cooked lunch and Devon cream tea, with time to chat over the kitchen table between carefully structured sessions so that you go home full of confidence and enthusiasm for the next steps: doing it for real. If you want to get to grips with a taste of the real good life before making a major commitment, a day or two spent with Debbie and Andrew may be just what you need. To book a place or for more information go to www. smallholdertraining.co.uk, or contact Debbie on 01837 810569 or debbie@smallholdertraining. co.uk.

As the most populated Island of the Canary Islands and Spain, Tenerife proves itself to be one of those holiday destinations that serves its purpose well, perhaps being the reason that the flow of migration to Tenerife keeps increasing!

ome to the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife which is one of the world’s largest carnivals, the island is a convenient and beautiful get away which seems to be rather popular with us Brits for a bit of sun, sand and entertainment. It does of course also help that the island is only a three hour flight away. Among the many places to stay, the four star Club Hotel Riu Buena Vista is a good all rounder in that it serves well for both families looking for an all inclusive holiday that caters for children, and also for youngsters who might be

more interested in frequenting the summer beach bars! The hotel is on the sea front and is located in Playa Paraiso (close to the town of Adeje). For family holidays, this hotel is ideal. They offer great children’s facilities with Europe’s largest and newest ‘Siam water park’ being only a fifteen minute drive away (http://www.tenerifewaterpark. com/). The hotel has a Riu land kids club where there is a daytime entertainment programme which includes bowling, playing darts, table tennis, and there is also a playground, internet access and children’s swimming pools (heated

Leisure and unheated) which is more than enough to keep the children occupied. In the meantime, Mum has the option of indulging in a massage at the beauty salon or booking in at the hairdresser’s while Dad might be enjoying a session at the gym or a game of football on the sports pitch. The hotel also offers a lounge bar, an Atrio bar where there are unlimited local beverages as part of the package and live entertainment as part of the Riu evening programme and daytime shows. The evening shows are put together by the hotel’s in house animation team and they are very entertaining with shows such as Grease Lighting which the whole family can enjoy. Their themed restaurant alternates between Spanish and Italian and their buffet and dishes are prepared on the spot which contribute to an authentic dining experience. The hotel manages to cater for all and has a very lively and friendly atmosphere. At all times of the day, there are a lot of things to keep the whole family entertained within the hotel whether that is relaxing by the pool, or taking a trip to the beach which is only a two minute walk away or even teaming up for a game of volley ball or tennis. For those who enjoy exploring, the Island boasts impressive gullies, beautiful forests, and deep valleys which are surrounded with picturesque and blooming villages. And as an all inclusive package, the hassle of having to organise everything separately is easily avoided. For a trip which will be fun for the kids and allow you top up on your tan whilst enjoying some Spanish sun, it’s worth giving Tenerife’s Riu Buena Vista hotel a thought the next time you’re planning your holidays. www.w1magazine.co.uk 25

Chinawhite On October 21st 2009, London saw the long awaited return of London’s most prolific luxury members club. Moving away from Soho and embracing the elegance of Fitzrovia, Chinawhite returned to great acclaim. Long considered a pioneer in its field, Chinawhite combines its formidable heritage with a brand new distinct, progressive and modern approach. Once through the doors, guests are enveloped in modern day oriental opulence. The club’s configuration offers distinct changes in mood and tempo. The ground floor restaurant boasts a ceiling of abstract clouds, Chinese hand painted wallpaper, Balinese carved friezes and paintings by Hong Kong artist Nigel Szeto famed for his contemporary pieces that re-work traditional art-forms. The Temple bar with its luxurious Missoni cushions and interchanging wall lights offers a space to relax. The main room houses the dance floor and main bar and is realised in a decadent mix of materials. A warm, varied hardwood floor links the spaces seamlessly and the space is surrounded by walls that echo old and new China – a Cole and Son wallpapered oriental landscape sits comfortably alongside a glass bar featuring a traditional poem celebrating life. ‘Chinawhite defines a new era in nightclubs. This is unlike any other club you have been to : it’s intellectual nightlife, the insider’s insider. And just to be clear …. this club will not make you famous.’ Comments John Stephen, co-founder and Chairman.

Events Guide West End singer Sophie Evans is set to perform a touching rendition of the classic ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ at the event.Heather Wood, Chief Executive of Rainbow Trust said: “It is very fitting to be returning to this particular venue to celebrate our 25th Anniversary and quite amazing to think how far we have come in 25 years. Heather is one of the rare Chief Executives at the helm of a charity she contributed to building from the ground up, joining the fledgling trust as its second employee, and working from the shed of the charity’s inspirational founder Bernadette Cleary OBE. The charity has since grown into one of the UK’s most-loved children’s charities. Each year its
devoted care teams provide expert social palliative care to almost 1,200 families across England faced with the unimaginable ordeal of caring for a child battling a life threatening or terminal illness. The Silver Jubilee Ball will take place on Thursday 13 October, starting with a Champagne reception in the Savoy’s stunning River Room, followed by the main event in the Ballroom, which includes dinner, a speech by the charity’s founder Bernadette Cleary and entertainment from the fantastic Chance Band through to 1am. Tickets for this exclusive event cost £250 per head. For further details please visit: www.rainbowtrust.org.uk/ball
About Rainbow Trust ■ Rainbow Trust celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2011 ■ The children’s charity provides expert social palliative care to families when their child has a life threatening or terminal illness. Assistance is available for families 24 hours a day. Individually tailored high quality care is offered from diagnosis through to treatment and, should a family become bereaved, the charity will continue to support them for as long as they are needed, helping family members cope with the present and prepare them for the future. ■ Rainbow Trust relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and through the outstanding generosity of its supporters is able to help almost 1,200 families a year throughout England. However, this is just 10% of the families that could benefit from its help. ■ During the last 25 years the children’s charity has attracted a raft of celebrity support, with highlights including Rainbow patron George Michael pledging half of all royalties from his hit single ‘Don’t let the sun go down on me’ to Rainbow; a visit to Rainbow families by popstar Mariah Carey and former Spice Girl Emma Bunton presenting a special BBC1 ‘Lifeline Appeal’. ■ Hollywood actress Brigitte Nielsen recently stepped out to support Rainbow’s ‘Trust in Fashion’ event which was held on June 29th at London’s stunning One Mayfair. Celebrities, supermodels and the cream of the fashion industry attended the VIP fashion show, hosted by Sadie Frost and Marie Claire’s editor in chief Trish Halpin. Stars at the glittering event included Jo Wood and Poppy Delevigne. ■ This year Rainbow patron Alan Titchmarsh will be hosting a special 25th Anniversary fundraising event in October to commemorate its landmark year. ■ The charity has gained considerable respect among the healthcare/medical profession for its expertise in social palliative care and in 1993 the Department of Health (DoH) actually used Rainbow Trust’s methods as a template for social palliative care services. The charity was also invited to contribute to the DoH independent review of palliative care services for children and young people in England in 2007.

Tim Anderson comments, ”I have always been obsessed with east and southeast Asian food, at first for the sheer exoticism of it, but now more for the depth and vibrancy of flavour found in that region. Malaysian cuisine in particular is fascinating; the ingredients and dishes are amazingly diverse and there is so much to learn and explore. I’ll be closely watching the masters of Malaysian food at work at Malaysia Night to pick up skills and techniques I’ve never seen before.
