The nine-storey, 30-metre tall Armagh Apartments block is the first high-rise apartment tower built in Christchurch following the 2011 earthquake. This very high-quality development lays claim to many firsts and notable features incorporated. It was the first base isolated, low damage design apartment high-rise constructed in New Zealand. The concrete shear wall base isolated structure provides a significant level of earthquake resilience and security to the occupants. Sound proofing is also of the highest level and the complementary quality materials used – built-in oak joinery, store, tile floors and high-quality carpet – will set this apart from most other apartment developments in New Zealand.

Two double-storey penthouses on the roof and two doublestorey apartments on the ground floor with their own courtyard gardens will further lift the quality of the offering. The Armagh Apartments set a new benchmark in Christchurch for inner-city high-rise apartment living.

Conical Hill was designed for an active family based in Christchurch, with a modest budget, as a simple yet sophisticated lock-and-leave holiday retreat in the small alpine town of Hanmer Springs in the Canterbury High Country.

The site – a tight 600sqm sloping section – borders Conical Hill Road to the west, which is at times a busy route for walkers and bikers exploring the forested hills. Local planning regulations dictated the house be well set back from the road and centralised on the site. Cunning planning and a steep 38-degree roof pitch enabled the house to squeeze under the restrictive recession planes, while still incorporating all spaces as desired in the client’s brief. The small 89sqm building footprint incorporates a generous double height living area with inset wood burner/wood store and adjoining kitchen area.

Three bedrooms are split between the ground and first floor, with each floor including a bathroom. A large storage space with external access to the long, covered verandah is tucked under the stairs, in which the owners store their 5 mountain bikes – an indispensable element of the brief. Operable skylights are positioned on the roof to enable passive ventilation from all rooms, whilst also framing the view down the valley from the master bedroom. As a nod to the forested surrounding environment, the house is clad in timber throughout. Stained board and batten externally are paired with contrasting aluminium joinery.

A full height aluminium louvre adds interest to the road side elevation, whilst also providing privacy and screening from the late afternoon sun. Internally, exposed first-floor timber floor joists create a greater sense of space, while plywood linings and timber flooring maintain the no-fuss, holiday aesthetic. NZIA Local Award winner 2018.

This substantial family home spreads itself in and around two anchoring spinal board-finished in-situ concrete walls on a large Fendalton rear section. The home includes three interlocking living spaces, five bedrooms, a media room, underground wine cellar, garaging for five cars, and an outdoor pool area.

The overall robust design and resulting spinal walls came about from the client’s brief for a sense of substance and permanence. The concrete spines house services, offering good acoustic insulation, and serving as thermal masses for the home. Concurrently they also take on the role of ordering the various zones of the home which are all accessed off circulation spaces inserted between them. One of the spines continues externally as a low concrete wall separating the pool from the rest of the backyard. Timber is employed throughout the home to provide further richness to the material palette and offer visual warmth to the extensive floor plan. NZIA Local Award winner 2012.
