INTERNACIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

Dear friends,

Queridos amigos,

“Tropical Watercolor” is the 1st international Watercolor Festival organized by IWS Costa Rica.

“Acuarela Tropical” es el primer Festival Internacional de Acuarela organizado por IWS Costa Rica.

Not only to promote watercolor art, but also to reunite international artist from all over the world. To help understand different cultures, beliefs and lifestyles and to promote peace and tolerance through art. It is also the first event of its kind in Costa Rica with 600 entries from 64 countries, from which just over 150 paintings were selected by a international Jury.

I want to thank all who have participated in making this event possible, sponsors, fellow artists, exhibitors, and jury . Without your support, help and advice this would not have been possible. Also a special thanks to Mr. Atanur Dogan, President and Founder of the International Watercolor Society ( IWS Globe) and Ms. Silvia Neiger, Board member of IWS Globe and coordinator for IWS Latin America.

Sincerely, Silvia Monge, Artist, Country head IWS Costa Rica Curator 1st International Watercolor Festival “Tropical Watercolor”

The Sophia Wanamaker Gallery of the Costa Rican - North American Cultural Center, is pleased to receive in its room, the exhibition “Tropical Watercolor”, main exhibition of the Ist International Watercolor Festival IWS Costa Rica 2018, which is brought by the Costa Rican representation of the International Watercolor Society, led by the Costa Rican artist Silvia Monge Puig. The IWS as an international organization was created to publicize the global reach of watercolor from different latitudes, as well as its different forms of representation and creation. This event receives approximately 150 watercolors from 59 countries: Albania, Germany, Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cuba, El Salvador, Egypt, Scotland, Spain, United States, Estonia, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, England, Spain, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Czech Republic , Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Ukraine. This allows at the same time to open a window of possibilities to rediscover in this pictorial technique, not only trends, but images that evoke the feelings and thoughts of many artists who share that passion and demand for this practice. The watercolor that dominates this sample demands a particular technical skill and a critical eye before the stroke of its watery stain. The global relevance of this exhibition puts into perspective and dialogue a practice that over time has acquired great experience in the artistic practices of Costa Rica for many decades. We would like to highlight that it is an honor for us, in addition to hosting the exhibition, to receive in Costa Rica the Founder and Director of this international

organization the artist Atanur Dogan (Turkey) and also the Representative for Latin America of the IWS and dedicated of the Festival, Mrs. Silvia Neiger (Mexico). Likewise, the CCCN appreciates the trust of Mrs. Silvia Monge who, in collaboration with Mr. Carlos Rodó Ortuño, trusted this institution to carry out this project. Costa Rica is a country with great opportunities to create, not only because of its culturally provocative environment, but also because of its painstaking and committed artists with the most diverse motivations to achieve important levels of recognition that leave a mark for others on the way. The fact of having “Tropical Watercolor”, is part of that Costa Rica that is open to the world, which embraces diversity and feels part of a single language, art, which communicates and expresses the most intimate reflections with a gesture that places 160 watercolor stories, which intersect us to feel ourselves in humanity closer, from a spot of which none will be fought to confront it. In this sample there are no countries, or continents, we will be a single humanity: watercolor humanity. And we will see how from one construction site to another there are kilometers of distance, but in this space we shrink those distances and see how we care about the same thing and we are inspired by the same. Today we forget the limit, the edges, and we make a single drop. We make a single watery spot, diverse and colorful, from Costa Rica to the world. Este evento recibe aproximadamente 150 acuarelas de 59 países: Albania, Alemania, Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brasil, Bulgaria, Canadá, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croacia, Cuba, El Salvador, Egipto, Escocia, España, Estados Unidos, Estonia, Francia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, India, Inglaterra, España, Israel, Italia, Japón, Kazajistán, Letonia, Macedonia, Malasia, México, Moldavia, Mongolia, Panamá, Paraguay, Perú, Portugal, República Checa, Rumanía, Rusia, Serbia, Eslovaquia, Eslovenia, Sri Lanka, Suiza, Taiwán, Turquía, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Myanmar (Birmania), Tailandia, Ucrania.

INTERNACIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY

A really tropical Festival, with a lot of color, a lot of climatic heat and a lot of human warmth. Thanks to the IWS Costa Rica and its members for the possibility of getting to know each other personally between artists and members of different IWS branches of Latin America.

I recognize the titanic effort of the organizing team to present an impeccable event. Also, it is worth highlighting the great quality of Silvia Monge’s artistic work, she is the first Latin American artist that in a country as far away as India, to win a first place in the framework of the IWS events and made the world turn its gaze towards our continent.

It has been a joy to be able to witness the Tropical Festival in an exemplary country to tolerance and peace worldwide. In addition, a collaborative work with the IWS Mexico so that visiting European artist would arrive at both events, thus achieving that the community of Latin American artists can be seen in the rest of the world and vice versa.

Silvia Neiger Senior Director IWS Globe Director IWS Latin America
