I

f you’ve just got engaged, let me be one of the first to say congratulations! Once you get over the extra weight you’re now carrying around on your left hand you will at some point ask yourself ‘where do I actually start?’. Visiting wedding fayres, open days (make sure you pencil in 13th March 2016 at Suffolk Food Hall) and buying wedding magazines can be great inspiration for your wedding but can also be very overwhelming as you quickly realise there is so much choice when it comes to planning a wedding. One of the first things you need to do is set a realistic budget. You may have some money put aside for your special day, but now is the time to think about how much you feel is reasonable to spend on all the elements of your wedding, and ensure you have at least five percent put aside as a contingency. It may also be worth setting up a dedicated wedding bank account to start saving. If you set your budget right from the start, it will be much easier to stick to it. You can expect to spend around 40 percent of

your budget on your reception so finding the right venue is an important choice – here are a few things to consider: How many guests? It will be difficult to book a venue (and ultimately set a date) if you don’t know how many people will be attending. Some venues will only be licensed up to a certain number and you don’t

What style is the venue? Is it a country house, converted barn, stately home, or a modern hotel? The style of the venue needs to complement the overall style of the wedding.

A vintage style wedding would be much better suited to a country house or marquee venue than a modern hotel. Are there in-house caterers? Venues often have in-house caterers that you will have to use. However some venues allow you to bring in your own caterer. Though bear in mind that this means you will need to choose yet another supplier! Can they recommend suppliers? We’re lucky at Suffolk Food Hall as we have some fabulous resources under our own roof! The Outrageous Cake Company are based within The Cookhouse and we also have a cookery school which is a great place to hold your

hen or stag party. My personal background is in wedding planning and I have been in the industry for over 10 years. During that time I have built up lots of local contacts so we can happily recommend suppliers that meet your needs and most importantly your budget. Remember that popular venues and popular dates (i.e. Saturdays in the summer) can get booked well in advance so the sooner you start looking the better.

If a lot of your guests are based far away from the venue it may be prudent to provide some transport. Is accommodation available? If accommodation is available for guests, find out if you can hold a number of rooms to ensure your guests get the accommodation they need.

What is your role? How much will you be required to do? Have you been invited to the whole day or just the evening? Your role will determine your attire. Do you have a long walk to the church or reception? Staying comfortable is just as important as looking great. What is the weather going to be like? It’s impossible to predict the weather at any time of the year, especially in the UK so plan for all eventualities!

Now you have an idea of what kind of event that you are going to, and your role, you can start planning your outfits. Just because the dress code is strict it doesn't mean that you have to shed all your personality: be creative and remain true to your personal style. Never wear yellow in your everyday wardrobe? Then don’t wear it for a wedding! Think about your outfit as a very special extension of what you’d wear to a really nice party. Too many people try to go so far removed from what suits them because of the enormity of the day. Try on everything together; dress, shoes and all the accessories. Seeing the outfit together can avert an on-the-day disaster – you’d be surprised how many people don’t do this.

Like most dress codes these days, the rules at weddings are much more versatile than they once were. Pay particular attention to the cut and material of the suit. A two or three piece suit is the ultimate all rounder. Choose the right fabric – lightweight materials like cotton and linen blends will serve you well for the day through until the evening. Off the peg is fine, it’s all about the fit, as long as you have a well fitting suit you can style it up! Don’t be afraid to wear separates – knowing your shape and style will enable you to choose the correct pieces for the complete outfit. An example of this could be tailored trousers combined with a tweed blazer, shirt and silk tie. Spring and summer weddings, daytime weddings, and those held in tropical locations all demand a dress code that is much less starched, yet retains certain chicness. Much of the change happens in the material and structure of the suit, rather than the style itself. For men, spring is the perfect time to subtly experiment with colour—not too hot for dark hues and not too cold for pastels and neons. Layer brightly coloured shirts under lightweight suit jackets and accessories with slim ties or bold patterned socks. There are so many subtle ways for men to add colour to their looks, so there’s no excuse for a straight black-and-white ensemble. When it comes to autumn, winter and country weddings, a blazer would be appropriate. Team it with a quirky pair of cufflinks and pocket square, it will give a stylish look. A great pair of shoes, like brogues, can complement the entire look so make sure they are a versatile colour and style. Don’t underestimate the effect of mixing and matching textures and patterns – pair a slightly heavier wool suit with a silk tie and don’t be afraid to wear some colour!

Some great alternative looks include using bold colours to your advantage – a bold mid-length skirt with a blouse will work well. Complete the look with neutral accessories for instant glamour. Prefer a retro kinda feel? A knee-length cocktail dress never goes out of style. Love the catwalk look? Choose a simple, showstopping piece like a silhouette dress with a stole and fabulous fascinator. A simple prom-like dress can give a stylish and polished look. Stick to one colour and use accessories in a different hue to add a sassy twist. A fan of floor length gowns? This is one of the most popular looks for weddings; maxi dresses should feel glamorous, with lots of colour and subtle print. Ditch the flip-flops, add a stylish pair of heels, a fab fascinator and a bag. For a perfectly poised, elegant look, a tiered dress will hit the spot. For a summer wedding, light pastel, lace and chiffon fabrics work well with ruffles. Team with a simple bag, matching hat and killer heels. If dresses really aren’t your style, glow with confidence in a trouser suit. Pull off the look with bold prints, stripes, cigarette pants, killer heels and big corsages.

Weaving a Tale

Jennifer Meredith interviews Liz Trenow about silk weaving, Sudbury heritage and the transition from journalism to fiction writing

any Suffolk-natives are unaware that their county possesses a rich heritage in the silk weaving trade – me being one of them. Until I met accomplished journalist and author, Liz Trenow, for an interview at her Colchester home, I had no idea that our very own market town of Sudbury was once at the centre of a booming industry, housing some 600 looms and four prominent firms. I was also oblivious to the fact that those firms still exist today, with fully functioning looms and even royal commissions.

to decline because of relaxed import duty and restrictions; because of this, many of the weavers of Spitalfields became unemployed. The government passed bills to try and fix their wages, but when it came to the master weavers, employers couldn’t afford it. So these weavers began moving out to places like East Anglia in order to find other weavers who could work for lower rates, but also because the industry turned to mechanisation, and they wanted to find small streams to run their mills. This is when my family came out first of all to Braintree, and then to Sudbury in the early 19th century.’

Having been born and raised in Sudbury living next to a silk mill, Liz Trenow has a family history entrenched in the world of silk weaving: ‘I was brought up in a house next to the mill because my father was the managing director,’ Liz explained as she poured me a coffee. ‘My first two books were very much inspired by this lifestyle.’ She was, of course, referring to The Last Telegram and The Forgotten Seamstress, written in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Both are period novels centred on strong female characters whose fates become intertwined in potentially dangerous relationships, and both have a prominent theme of silk weaving.

Was it inevitable that, with such an impressive silk weaving lineage, Liz would focus her writing on the industry? ‘Looking back, I guess it was inevitable,’ she laughed. ‘But it didn’t seem that way to me at the time. I left Sudbury thinking that I could make a life for myself in London, and it was only really when I was doing my MA that I realised my parents were getting older and their immense and long history would be lost if didn’t talk to them about their lives.’

Taking a seat in Liz’s front room in view of a stunning abstract canvas painted by her husband (David Trenow, an established artist, folklorist and singer), she gave me an overview of her family history: ‘The silk weaving company was established around 300 years ago in Spitalfields, because that was the heart of the English silk weaving industry. It was a huge industry during this century; there were thousands of silk weavers in the country. However, the silk trade started

All of the records from her family’s business were tragically lost in the Blitz, so she started researching her first novel (the ‘final piece’ for her MA in Creative Writing at City University London) by talking to her parents, in particular her father: ‘it was when I was talking to him about the second World War and how the demand for such a luxury fabric stayed alive during this time, that he told me about weaving parachutes. I was really intrigued by this. The strength of the fabric had to be accurate and consistent, and the porosity had to be perfect.’ Having worked in journalism for 20 years

previously, Liz is well versed the concept of research. So when her professor advised her not to write an historic novel due to the volume of research involved, she bravely persisted and emerged with a master’s degree and a novel that was snapped up by Christopher Little, literary agent to none other than J. K. Rowling. Three novels later, and a fourth on the way, Liz’s writing has been equated to the likes of one of Australia’s biggest publishing exports, Kate Morton, and awardwinning novelist of Sunday Times bestseller Chocolat, Joanne Harris. When I ask how she feels about this comparison, she explains, ‘surreal! I don’t feel like it’s really happening to me. I think also that people expect me to have changed as a person because of this, but of course you don’t change – you’re still you. I’m astonished that I’ve had this kind of reception. Recently I went to a book club, and it was really interesting to talk to people who had read my novels. What is really touching is when I get emails from people from all over the world telling me that they love my books; it’s extraordinary to know that I’m able to reach out to people in this way!’ Due to be published in 2017, her fourth novel is a tale of ‘silk weaving and illicit romance against the backdrop of religious persecution, mass migration, racial tension and wage riots in 18th century Spitalfields, London.’ Provisionally entitled, The Master Piece, we’re certainly looking forward to losing ourselves in Liz’s literary tapestry. t’s December 1998 and NASA is sending a spaceship to Mars. The world’s finest rocket scientists have been toiling for years on the design of their Mars Climate Orbiter. Now, after a textbook launch, it’s farewell Earth. The journey to Mars takes nine months, but then something extraordinary happens. Instead of slowing down, the spacecraft hurtles around the planet and vanishes. Why? Well, the engineers navigating the spaceship had been using imperial measures; mission control had thought they were using metric. One group thought they were talking about miles, the other group thought they were talking about kilometres. Sadly, that meant $125M worth of spaceship disappeared. It’s a useful parable for us today: incredibly talented people, fantastically well educated who make a series of errors that seem to

defy explanation. And yet the reason for the error was as simple as a lack of effective communication or perhaps an absence of intellectual curiosity, common sense even. Today’s children will emerge into this complex world of work in a few short years’ time and still our goal as educators keeps moving. The world of work continues to evolve and shift, showing us time and again that things are changing faster than at any time in our history, more than ever now requiring transferable skills, creative thinking and problem solving; courage and innovation; presentation and debating skills. It follows that in education, it is no longer appropriate or acceptable to pigeonhole children as being arty or sporty or geeky. They need to be polymaths: rounded, lateral thinkers, good at arts and sciences, developing the whole of their intellectual and creative capacities – not

just some of their academic ones. I remember having to go through my school reports with my parents after the end of each term, which came in a sort of booklet with individual sheets of A5 paper stapled together, and the reports were always in the same order: English, maths, science, languages, humanities, followed by the arts and sport at the back. I grew up believing that, despite evidence all around me to the contrary, there must be some special reason why maths and languages were more important than music and sports. It turns out, there wasn’t and they’re not. So the first thing I did when I was able to have any influence over such matters in a school, was to produce pupils’ reports in subject alphabetical order, which had the happy consequence of putting art first, followed by drama!

Jennifer Meredith talks to horologist and watchmaker, Roger W Smith, about British-made luxury timepieces

wo-hundred years ago, the British watchmaking industry was booming; one would simply have to turn to the likes of Thomas Earnshaw, John Roger Arnold or John Harrison in order to obtain a timepiece of unique beauty and everlasting craftsmanship. Today, however, British horologists are few and far between; options become even sparser when considering the amount of horologists able to craft a watch from scratch. Is it a dying art? Maybe. However, with the public’s renewed interest in British-made goods, one would not be naïve to expect a revival in the near future.

Smith watch is entirely UK-made, a deliberate move by the firm to establish themselves as an honest and genuine British brand. In an open letter to watchmakers and collectors, Roger commented upon the current state of British watchmaking, warning of the damage that dishonesty could do to the industry: ‘what concerns me is the lack of sincerity in British watchmaking; brands must be honest to the buyer, otherwise it’ll destroy the integrity of horologists across the UK. It’ll take a long time for us to recover from the damage already done, but it can be accomplished if brands are prepared to rethink their values’.

over £100,000. He states, ‘my time is split between building one-off timepieces and developing new watches. My work changes almost seasonally as I work on varying projects and collections, but you can usually find me sitting at my bench – it’s where I’m best placed!’ It was George Daniels who inspired him to enter the world of watchmaking. Roger was 17 when George, a visiting lecturer, delivered a riveting talk to his class at the Manchester School of Horology: ‘it was really a pivotal moment for me. He was incredibly charismatic, and very inspiring’. Originally from Bolton, Roger moved to the Isle of Man in 1998 to work with George in his studio, absorbing as much watchmaking know-how as possible, including ‘The Daniels Method’ which involved mastering 32 trades that once traditionally supported the British watchmakers of the past. On being an apprentice of the accomplished watchmaker, Roger states, ‘working with George Daniels was an education; he was a very strong character, but a brilliant teacher, and I soaked up a lot of information from him’. A 30-year age gap separated the two creators; they maintained a professional relationship throughout their collaborative careers, but they were also friends. As Roger explains, ‘he was very willing to advise and support me; he was a very supportive person’. Roger dedicated his time to horology from a young age; he established his own studio and began hiring a dedicated team, and has been

crafting high quality timepieces throughout his working life, so it wasn’t difficult for him to continue George Daniels’ legacy when he passed in late 2011: ‘when I incorporated George’s studio, it was business as usual. I didn’t feel any pressure, I was just happy to continue his work’. It’s a well-known fact that good things take time; producing a standard Roger W Smith watch can take around 11 months, from sourcing the raw materials to placing the finishing touches on the final product. ‘What makes us different from other luxury watch brands is the low volume of products we make (only ten a year), and how we make them,’ Roger explains. ‘We only have seven people working in our studio, in comparison to large factories with hundreds of employees. Everything is handmade with great attention to detail, and so the process of creating a timepiece takes far longer; for example, one dial can take several weeks to manufacture’. One design that Roger is particularly proud of is the Open Dial, a concept that uncovers

the sheer amount of work that goes into building a watch movement. The wearer of a Series 2 Open Dial wristwatch can literally observe time ticking away via the beautiful three-dimensional architecture of the underdial work. He states, ‘I designed this watch because all of the hard work and meticulous detail that goes into a watch movement deserves to be seen’. Expect more exciting innovations from the firm; this year, they will be working on a series of four timepieces, which is fairly unusual for such a small, independent manufacturer. Roger explains, ‘We’ll be building dummy models to display the visual aspects of the pieces, and we’ll also be re-launching the website to tie in with the new collection’. n recent years we’ve witnessed Britain become ‘the one to watch’ in global fashion. Between New York City, London, Milan and Paris, London Fashion Week receives the second highest footfall of all four events during fashion month, showing that our capital is favoured by designers and attendees alike; this accomplishment has been a catalyst for the creation of regional fashion events, including this year’s Suffolk Fashion Show – a roaring success in which some of the best local designers and retailers showcased their clothes and accessories to a room packed with guests. Our county is slowly rising in the sartorial ranks within the UK, nurturing and inspiring creators to produce innovative, locally made designs. Sarah Louise Chatterton, creator of selfdubbed ‘happy fashion’ brand SLC SLC, sees the Suffolk label as a unique selling point. A passionate advocate of local talent, she explains to us that the county is home to untapped potential: ‘there are a lot of cool artists and creative people in the local area. Suffolk is overflowing with talent.’

‘East Anglia used to be a hub for the textile industry so it’s great to find a team of talented seamstresses who used to work for labels such as Jaeger when they produced here. Part of our business model is to breathe life back into this fantastic industry, which is great for people who like to make and create!’

The designer encourages support by collaboration, and regularly works with creatives and aspiring students to cultivate new and exciting projects: ‘we love working with new talent, so local school students Becky and Georgia have been involved in programmes with us to create prints and we

Suffolk’s innate beauty is an inspiration for many, and Chatterton is similarly enthralled by her beautiful surroundings: ‘Suffolk is such an inspirational place to design and create; there’s so much natural beauty to watch and draw and then turn into our silk screen printed patterns.’ Isabella Singleton, Suffolk-born designer

and creator of colourful accessories brand Bella Singleton, has utilised her countryside influences and inspirations to create stunning pieces on a larger scale in London. ‘There is something about London that gives you your drive. Everyone is always so busy so your work ethic – well, mine at least – is at it’s best here. Most of my friends live here too now and there is always something arty to do! But a big studio in the countryside is what I would love one day.’ Having previously moved across the country to Falmouth for her Art Foundation Course, Singleton is well-travelled, but enjoys visiting her hometown of Sibton where her supportive family still reside, ‘I go back about once every six to eight weeks; my little brother is still at school there and I love to visit my parents. Yoxford, Suffolk House Antiques, is one of her favourite stores: ‘his shop is wonderful! He has one of the largest collections of early oak furniture in the UK.’ Singleton’s designs are inspired by ‘a mixture of topics, hugely by the surrealist movement where one subject merges into the next and into the next, to form completely illogical and nonsensical dream worlds. West African patterns and textiles are a more recent influence for me, after I realised that my designs were often being compared to them. The detailed repetition combined with big bold punches of bright colour – that is what my aesthetic has been all about from the start: simplicities made complex through a constant process of reworking and manipulation. My scarves are currently stocked in The British Library in line with their exhibition on West Africa.’ Bubbly and passionate designer Estelle Ruth

believes that inspiration can be found anywhere, but that Suffolk ‘has a lot to offer, and it is definitely an inspiring and beautiful place to live’. Having lived in a city for nearly six years, Estelle moved to Suffolk to pursue life as founder of her eponymous brand: ‘it took some time to adapt; it was a new place with only my family and familiar faces, so starting a business here was a scary step – but it didn’t take me long to realise that Suffolk has such a strong community spirit and that really affected my career in a positive way.’ Estelle realised her passion from a young age, declaring that she had ‘tunnel vision’ from the age of 15 when she discovered that becoming a fashion design was, indeed, a possibility. After studying for three years at college and four years at university, she found work as a childrenswear and menswear designer; however, she longed for something more: ‘I knew women’s fashion was my true passion and I always dreamed of seeing my own name

on the label.’ Now an up and coming name within Suffolk, Estelle is determined to further her involvement within the community: ‘I am extremely eager to get involved more with local charities and any events to promote small businesses within Suffolk. I think collaborations are an important part of growing a business, and in such a short time I have developed some great relationships within Suffolk – and nothing is more inspiring than passionate people.’ And what of supporting young aspiring designers? ‘I would love to take on interns in future. I worked as an intern for just over a year and it was the most influential experience of my education. et us introduce you to Sarah Louise Chatterton – clothing designer, social anthropologist and business owner. Sarah graduated from Suffolk School of Art & Design and began her career working for esteemed design art company, Established & Sons and has also had the pleasure of working as a costumier for The Royal Opera House, researching and designing for Tannhauser, Adriana Lecouvreur and Anna Nicole. Despite the beginning of her career being in London, the draw of Suffolk holds strong and we wanted to find out more about Sarah’s love of her home county, how it inspires her work and how she’s trying the breathe life back into the textile industry in East Anglia.

HOW DO YOU FIND BEING A DESIGNER IN SUFFOLK? Suffolk is such an inspirational place to design and create; there's so much natural beauty to watch and draw. I also love how laid back most people are, and the space – it's nice to be in a chilled environment – and to infuse our work with that happiness. There are a lot of amazing artists and creative people in the local area, although there are hubs in Aldeburgh and Southwold. When you look you find so much home grown talent. So many people find the area a great spot to create in; such as local talented photographer Tanya Simpson who has worked with us to capture the Suffolk countryside and Kay Mullenger who's created our jewellery range from our off cuts – meaning we don't waste material or add to landfill. I also find lots of people migrate to Suffolk from London after varied careers there. For instance, we've worked with celebrated fashion photographer John Ferguson, who has worked with Naomi Campbell amongst many others; Jane Goodchild who designs fabulous handbags and Cheri Knock who is a make-up artist with her own studio, Morello Studio, to create fantastic collaborations.

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FASHION AND TEXTILE HISTORY? I studied fashion and illustration at the Suffolk School of Art and Design and would thoroughly recommend to anyone; the teachers were

fabulous and had a great history of working on interesting projects for big companies – they were very free spirited and really encouraged pure creativity. It was a really enjoyable time. I also topped up with courses locally in sewing, dress-making, pattern cutting, fashion design and textile creation. I also studied Social Anthropology at Uni which was very varied and means I have a background in human rights and the general study of societies and humankind which helps to create a business that is also eco-friendly and socially responsible.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS? The play of colour on the water at local rivers and the seaside, beachscapes, nature, and flora and forna. There is an abundance of beauty all around us.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU? There's no such thing as a typical day! It all depends on where the wind blows and where people's collective consciousness lands. If an item takes off and we have online orders and wholesale orders then energy will be put into that. There's normally a really busy period like that twice a year – the rest of the time it's great fun creating for lively and busy events like the Suffolk Show. Designing new pieces is of course the most fun along with fabric buying trips, drawing designs, doing the maths prior to each collection launching, website design and working with original customers.

After a full week of using the The Exfoliator brush on 2-3 minute cycle, my skin felt smoother, especially on the backs of my arms. he most common New Year’s Resolution, by a mile, is an iteration of ‘I want to get in shape’. That’s awesome, but we all know how hard it can be to actually do it. Of course, where a lot of you may start is to consider joining a gym, which is a really good idea on paper. Joining a gym allows you to use both cardiovascular and resistance training equipment to get the best of both worlds and truly improve your health and your body composition.

All in all, being active in everything you do is beneficial. Activity, not exercise, is the key to health, longevity and inner happiness, so why not try these five tips in the next few months and make this the year that you own your new year’s resolution and start on the journey to health? Resistance training will improve bone density so you’re far less likely to fall victim to osteoporosis as you age; it will improve muscle tone which not only makes you look and feel better in (and out of) clothes but will also keep you strong. Add to this some good quality cardiovascular training on the rowing machine or bike and you can bulletproof your heart and lungs, keeping you healthier for years to come! But what if the gym isn’t for you? If you’re not keen on the idea of joining a gym or health club, there are still loads of options for you to get active and be healthy. All over Suffolk there are awesome boot camp style group training sessions outdoors which let you meet new people and have fun while you work out! Enjoying exercise is important, especially during the winter months when all you really want to do is curl up with a gingerbread latte and a book. Being active during the winter months will give you a real head start on the ‘summer body’ rush, and when you feel amazing in a summer dress, or you catch yourself smiling at your reflection when you put on your swimming shorts, the hard work will all be worthwhile. And if the idea of doing push ups in a field sounds more like torture than a fun morning wake up to you, why not start smaller? The Suffolk countryside has some of the most beautiful scenery in the UK, and the cycling trails are there begging to be used. Why not plan an epic bike ride at the weekends, getting the whole family involved for some fresh air and quality bonding time? You could even have a look at one of the many park runs we have if you don’t like the idea of a bootcamp but still want to get outside.

Plan outdoors family activities, including walking and biking. Hike to somewhere nice and have a winter BBQ! Sign up to a bootcamp or a park run, or any other organised group activity where you’ll have a support network of other people becoming more awesome. Buy a pedometer, or use that FitBit someone got for Christmas and isn’t using, and hit your 10,000 steps. Take advantage of a local health club. They almost always have New Year’s deals. Just be more active, day-to-day. It doesn’t have to be ‘exercise’ to be good for you. Gardening is much better than sitting on the sofa!

S

ome of us shave, some us don’t, but where did it all come from? What did man do with facial hair before the invention of the Gillette Mach 3? Well, shaving hasn’t always been so easy… Shaving is thought to date back to the Stone Age, cave drawings showing that the Neanderthal Man used seashells like tweezers to pluck out hairs from their body. It was the Egyptians, however, who were the ones that developed shaving into a regular daily ritual. Some of the original tools they used to shave included stone, flint and clam shells; they even used pumice to rub the hairs off. Records show that shark teeth may have been used before bronze, iron and copper razors were invented in order to remove hair. Could you imagine shaving with a clamshell now? I certainly can’t! The earliest razors were flint blades from around 30,000 BC. Flint was very sharp, although blunted quickly, so these were essentially the first disposable razors. It is thought that copper razors weren’t invented until 3000 BC, when metalworking came into being; these were hugely popular in India. In 300 BC in Rome, young men of about the

age of 21 were required to have their first shave. This signified their official entry into manhood and kicked off their celebration with an elaborate party. In 1770, the Perret razor was manufactured as an L-shaped wooden guard that held a razor blade in place. It prevented the user from cutting themselves too deeply. It wasn’t until 1847 William Henson created

‘It was the Egyptians who were the ones that developed shaving into a regular daily ritual’ the first hoe razor which placed the blade perpendicular to its handle, just like a garden tool. This changed the way that men gripped their razors and provided much more control. In 1895, in the United States King Camp Gillette, a salesman for the Baltimore Seal Company came up with the idea for a new type of disposable razor blade. Over the next

six years this was marketed, becoming a huge success. The 1800s saw a time when Victorian gentlemen were very particular over their facial hair and used all manner of homemade saving creams and lotions. There were several unsuccessful attempts to market electric razors from the beginning of the 1990s but it was the 1920s when the first electric razors made headway. In 1928 retired Army colonel Jacob Schick patented his own razor design which really took off and soon he’d sold millions. So, what does shaving look like for the modern man? Not only do many of these traditional razors still have a huge collective of users today, there are many modern razors available, ranging from hi-tech electric shavers and handheld razors which vibrate to lift hairs, to the more simple, disposable razors for travelling. We are certainly spoilt for choice. The rise of the beard and mo has made shaving a huge focus this year, with the MOVEMBER foundation sponsoring sales of Gillette razors in many major stores. Rake to Plate We follow the journey of Suffolk’s shellfish with the help of local experts

S

impers of Suffolk, suppliers of delicious and fresh shellfish to pubs, restaurants and fish counters across East Anglia, is located by the banks of the River Deben, just outside Woodbridge. Having spoken to Jonathan Simper on the phone, I understood that I was to drive through Ramsholt, past the village church and on towards the edge of civilisation – so this is what I did, and the edge of civilisation it was. Half wondering whether I should abandon my car and take the journey down the long, muddy slope towards Simpers on foot, I took the plunge (literally) and drove to the entrance, where I saw Jonathan emerge from his office. ‘How do they get around daily?’ I wondered; but the question was answered as soon as I was whisked effortlessly away to the foreshore in the company four-by-four. ‘We use these machines for what they were built for,’ Jonathan explained as we zoomed between farmlands to the river. Getting out of the car, I followed him on foot down a slope blanketed with metallic black and silver mussel shells, which opened out to a long stretch of beach, dotted with shellfish ready for harvest. >>

Here, Jonathan took me through the process of growing and harvesting mussels and oysters: their speciality shellfish. Mussels are bought very young, and are then implanted into the river bed with some below the tide mark and some just above; either way, all the mussels should be underwater for an adequate period of time in order to receive nutrients and grow in size. After three years, the mussels are raked up, cleaned and placed into tanks to remove bacteria, before finally having remaining barnacles removed by hand. Once this process is complete, the mussels are bagged up tightly and distributed to buyers with a certificate from the farm.

‘We work very closely with restaurants and fish counters to ensure that customers are purchasing the freshest shellfish possible. I’ve worked with Tyler Torrance at the Brudenell for a very long time, and he has a great understanding of how shellfish should be prepared,’ Jonathan explained. Tyler, Head Chef at the 2 AA rosette seafood and grill restaurant at Aldeburgh’s Brudenell Hotel, talked to me about the other side of the shellfish industry: preparation, cooking and serving. I asked Tyler how important it was for him to source shellfish from local suppliers.

Oysters are similarly bought young, imported from the Channel Islands for more efficient farming, before being placed into mesh bags and left to grow on the shore; the bags are shaken every so often to ensure that the shells don’t clump together. Once ready, all of Simpers of Suffolk’s shellfish are hand delivered to stockists across East Anglia. ‘Is it true that we should only eat shellfish in months with an R in the name?’ I asked, as we walked back up the beach. ‘No, it’s not true for all shellfish, only oysters; and even then, it’s not true for all oysters, only native oysters. When you eat a native oyster during the months of May to August, you might find a gritty texture that feels a bit like eating

sand; what this actually is, is the larvae of the native oyster, which grow inside the females’ shells. So essentially, you’re destroying hundreds of native oysters by consuming them during these months’. Jonathan’s knowledge and passion for shellfish farming is immediately obvious; Director of one of the largest shellfish producers in East Anglia, his family have been in the industry for at least five generations, passing down knowledge and expertise along the way. His grandfather, Norman, farmed mostly on the shore before Jonathan’s father, Robert, began using boats; Jonathan continues utilising both of these methods today and has taught his son, Harry, all that he knows.

Brimming with enthusiasm, he responded, ‘as a commitment to our clientele I feel obsessed with finding and developing partnerships with local producers. They have a passion that I find is unparalleled in the modern world today; it’s a nod to a bygone era. I know the families and the teams by name and have my product hand delivered daily with absolutely no middlemen’. His approach to food was clear: source plays a huge part in determining the quality and freshness of a dish. ‘When it comes to my shellfish, it needs to be alive and kicking. We are talking “the picture of perfection”; when you select shellfish, quality is denoted by the vibrancy and the vitality of your produce. Every morning is like a scene from The Little Mermaid – you want your ingredients to sing’. Naively, I assumed that it was still customary for stockists to wake at the crack of dawn in order to secure their fresh batch of seafood; Tyler quickly dispelled this myth, ‘these guys might nod to generations of the past but I have no doubt that we are in modern times. Email, text and state of the art facilities are how we do things these days’. Tyler’s speciality at The Brudenell is lobster: ‘I love the decadence of lobsters and the sense of occasion that they can bring. I will serve

these simply grilled, or accompanied by a perfectly grilled steak – from our local butcher, of course’. Bullseye! Jennifer Meredith reviews The Bull Inn, home of delectable British pub food and award winning rooms

P

ull off the A11 at Barton Mills and you’ll find a cosy inn full of character, with personable service and great food to boot. Voted Funkiest B&B of the Year by The AA, The Bull Inn occupies a 500 year old coaching house on the edge of west Suffolk; unassuming on the outside, its unique interior fuses original features such as the cavernous fireplaces and exposed timber framing, with flamboyant décor including – but certainly not limited to – a hot pink colour scheme and cow-print dining chairs. On paper this may seem an unlikely combination, but in real life the juxtaposition works well. As I walked in, my eyes were drawn to the artistic chandeliers, made from recycled milk bottles. ‘We imported these from Sweden,’ Cheryl, co-owner of the inn, kindly explained. The business has Cheryl to thank for its AA award; her tireless hours of researching culminated in the B&B’s distinctive design theme. Surrounding us were decorative chrome bull heads and quirky illustrated wallpaper, creating an ultra trendy atmosphere that is unlike anywhere I have ever dined within Suffolk. Cheryl herself took our drinks order and it wasn’t long before our starters arrived, perfectly

arranged on their serving platters – one slate, one wood – and piping hot. I had requested the chilli-infused Thai Red Mussels, which arrived complete with crustless granary bread for soaking up the deliciously creamy sauce; being someone who habitually avoids spicy foods, I was naturally a little fearful of the bright red chillies that adorned the dish of mussels, but after tucking in I decided that the spice added just the right amount of ‘kick’ to the meal. My partner had a Blythburgh free range pork fillet neatly wrapped in bacon, placed on top of a circle of black pudding next to a side of pea puree and crispy crackling. Each part of the dish was filled with flavour, and the pork in particular was tender and moist.

the crème brulee (I won that one), whilst the other would enjoy the lemon meringue cheesecake. Arriving on a slate platter, the crème brulee was served in a white ramekin, accompanied by a tuile that held a sweet summer fruit jam and bitesize pineapple segments. Just as it should, the hard caramel topping cracked with one swift tap of my spoon, revealing the custardy inner layer – deliciously creamy and incredibly satisfying. The lemon meringue cheesecake was served with a dash of coulis on the side; the cake itself was layer upon layer of complementary flavours: a light biscuit base, a creamy sweet cheese layer, a semi-tart lemon curd and a sweet meringue topping.

Next up, a butternut squash risotto, garnished with spinach. Each mouthful was a taste explosion and the chicken itself was, without sounding cliché, cooked to perfection: juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and seasoned with herbs. Just across the table, my partner was quickly devouring his round of beef on a bed of mashed potato, roast vegetables and red wine gravy. I managed to grab a bit before the meal had completely disappeared; my knife cut through the steak as if I were slicing butter, and the taste was just perfect.

Feeling incredibly satisfied and, if I’m honest, a tad overindulged, we skipped tea and coffee to talk to Cheryl about the business. One very important point she highlighted is that The Bull Inn sources their ingredients from local suppliers, many from the immediate area including Newmarket, Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds – so you know that your food is high quality, and also that you’re supporting the local economy.

TEMPURA SQUID WITH CHILLI SAUCE • • • • • •

5 squid, tubes scored and sliced 1 bag salad leaves 100g feta cheese 3 blood oranges, peeled and sliced sweet chilli sauce (see below) tempura batter (see below)

Create chilli sauce in advance. Make up a batch of tempura batter. Cut squid into three and dip into flour then butter. Heat oil to 180 degrees in a deep fat fryer. Cook for 4-5 minutes or until the batter looks golden brown.

SWEET CHILLI SAUCE • 8-10 red chillis, deseeded and chopped. • 5 red peppers, deseeded and chopped. • 900g jam sugar. • 8g pectin (optional). • 500ml white wine vinegar.

Place everything in a pot and slowly bring to the boil so the sugar dissolves. Turn the heat down and simmer for at least 40 minutes. Once simmered – check if it sets on a cold plate. Keep cooking for a little longer if not. Put the mixture into a jam jar and put in the fridge once cooled. This recipe makes more than you need but keeps well in the fridge.

4 duck breasts, skin on 2 rhubarb Dauphinoise potatoes (see below) Port sauce (see below) Put Dauphinoise potatoes together and place in oven. Begin making the Port sauce.

When 15 minutes left on cooking time for Dauphinoise potatoes, start the duck, skin side down in a cold pan. Cook for 10-12 minutes on the skin, turn it over and cook for a couple of minutes then rest it. Plate up, and serve with al dente tenderstem broccoli.

PORT SAUCE • 1l good quality veal stock • 200ml Port • 500ml red wine • 4 shallots, diced • 2 bay leaves • ½ bunch thyme Fry off the shallots in vegetable oil, then add the herbs. De-glaze with red wine and reduce by half. Then add the port, and reduce by half again. Now add the veal stock. Cook on a medium heat until sauce thickens.

SPEEDY DAUPHINOISE POTATOES • • • • •

1kg peeled potatoes, sliced 1pt double cream ½ bunch thyme, tied together with string ½pt milk 4 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed Add all of the ingredients into a thick bottomed pan, bring to the boil. Remove from the heat and take the thyme out and discard. Pour the mixture into an oven proof dish, cover with foil. Cook at 180°c for 40 minutes until golden on top. Remove the foil and cook for a further 15-20 minutes until soft.

Create velvet chocolate torte filling and pour into base. Place in fridge to chill for 2 hours. Serve with sliced almonds and pour over chocolate sauce.

500ml passion fruit puree 500ml water 200g sugar 50g glucose Boil all the ingredients until the sugar and glucose has dissolved. Cool, then churn in ice cream machine until ready.

150g plain flour 175g caster sugar 200g butter 1 egg yolk 50g cocoa powder Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg yolk and fold in flour, cocoa and almonds. Wrap in clingfilm and rest in fridge for 30 minutes. Roll out into an 8 inch tin and blind bake for six minutes at 180°c; take out baking beans and continue to dry out in the oven for another three minutes until cooked.

VELVET CHOCOLATE TORTE • • • • •

200g chocolate 100g sugar syrup 4 egg yolks 2 tsp brandy 1pt double cream Add hot sugar syrup (100g sugar melted in 1 tbsp water) to the chocolate and mix until smooth. Add the egg yolks and brandy to the mixture. Semi-whip the cream and fold into the chocolate mixture. Pour into the pastry case and leave in fridge to chill.

If it’s culture you’re after, visit the National Museum of Contemporary Art for a taste Bucharest’s explosive modern art scene, or wander around the National Museum of Romanian History to explore archaeology, classic art and ancient finds. A deeply Easten Orthodox country, Romania is renowned for its large cathedrals; however, the most striking ecclesiastical architecture lies in the capitals smaller churches and chapels, positioned in impossibly small corners and crooks throughout the city. ere at EAUX we are big fans of prestigious car manufacturer Morgan Motor Company. After our editor, Victoria, was taken for a spin in a 1940s refurbished roadster en route to a friend’s wedding, she was curious about what it is that has made these charismatic cars stand the test of time. In 1909 Morgan Motor Company was born by Henry Fredrick Stanley Morgan with support from his father in Malvern, Worcestershire, and for more than 100 years they have been creating exciting and innovative sports cars for sophisticated individuals. Now the last remaining family owned, independent British motor manufacturer, Morgan Motor Company are famous for their unique design and quality of craftsmanship and have been named the most honest car manufacturer in the world.

A MORGAN NEVER DIES It has been said that a Morgan never dies; they are traditionally kept for long periods of time and loved like a family member, being passed down from generation to generation. As wear and tear takes its toll, each component can be replaced to sustain the vehicle’s longevity. Owners can re-chassis and

re-body, which makes the cars environmentally friendly and produces little wastage. With such a sterling reputation for durability and sustainability, it’s no wonder Morgan has been labeled as an honest brand. What has contributed to this? Morgan is a family owned business, a tradition which doesn’t just end with the owners; this extends to the workforce, dealers and customers – every person involved in the business is passionate about every single vehicle made. The cars themselves aren’t brash or ostentatious, and the materials used are authentic and reliable, with the main three being aluminium, leather and ash wood. Simple, resourceful and fun, the charm of each and every Morgan is not easily forgotten. Although the materials used add so much to each car, it’s really the skilled labourers and craftsmanship that determines the character. Each car is made with love and attention and this is plain to see.

SKILLED HANDS With less than 200 people in the business, the team is decidedly very small for a car manufacturer. A diverse range of highly skilled people work within the company, ranging

from designers and engineers to fabricators, carpenters, upholsterers, mechanics and painters. It’s common to see people with 40 years of experience – the longest serving employee has been working for Morgan for 54 years – teaching those new to the business, passing on their knowledge and skills by word of mouth. One person is responsible for the chassis, which gives ownership of that particular car and recognises that each car is a combination of a small, skilled team each with their own strengths and speciality. No matter how long each craftsman has been with the company, everyone has one thing in common: a passion for making amazing cars.

FROM CONCEPT TO CAR Each Morgan starts life in the form of concept sketches and designs. After consideration and tweaking by the various teams, the final designs are made into three-dimensional images on a computer in order to visualise the final product. Once the design process is complete, the product requires approval from owner, Charles. Once signed off, production can then begin. The chassis shop is where the chassis is laid down, and the drivetrain and wheels are fitted. >>

Each car is a nod to the classic era of British motoring This allows the chassis to move easily through to the assembly shop, which is where the rolling chassis meets a pre-made body; this body has been through the wood and sheet metal shops to get it to this stage. English Ash is used due to the lack of knots and it also provides high shock absorption. Every piece of wood used is slightly different, which lends itself to a truly unique product and allows Morgan to encourage green manufacturing and sustainable forestry. Once the body is fitted, the front and rear wings and bonnets are incorporated along with the wiring loom before the car goes to be painted, which is the slowest part of the process. To paint the car, it is stripped back down so each panel can be painted individually, yet still in the same paint booth. Once the car is painted, it moves into the trim shop where the leather and interior is fitted; this is also where the more personalised touches come from. To ensure the highest British quality, Scottish cows are used for the leather. Every car is checked at each stage to ensure that it is built to standard. A road test will then complete the mechanical sign off of the car

before it goes to PDI (Pre Delivery Inspection) to be visually signed off and sent to the supplying dealer. Dealers will then complete their own PDI check before handing over the car to its happy new owner.

THE MODERN DAY MORGAN Morgan doesn’t conform. ’ve been very lucky over the last year to have had the honor of driving some of the most luxurious cars currently available in the UK market. Sure, there are always a few that escape me (I’m currently wishing I’d gone on the DB9 test drive) but hey, these things happen! This month I visited our friends at Audi Ipswich; imagine my sheer joy at being handed the keys to one of Audi’s newest beasts (my youngest daughter calls it the family monster) – the Audi RS Q3. This is not like any other SUV; it is the ultimate 4x4 school run machine. If you want a vehicle that will leave you with a permanent smile on your face, then this is the car for you. I’ve had the RS for five days now, and can quite honestly say it is a true driver’s car. There are not many of these on the road; you’ll see a lot of Q3s, yet as I’ve found myself saying these past few days: ‘but that’s no RS, is it?’. With a gutsy 2.5 litre, five-cylinder turbo engine, the RS Q3 has plenty of power and boasts 0-60mph in a speedy 4.5 seconds. It claims 32.8mpg and Quattro, the innovative all-wheeldrive-system, which harnesses the power generated by the engine to produce optimised handling and provides an enhanced driving

experience. The seven-speed S tronic, which transfers torques to the quattro drivetrain via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch, has also been refined for even faster gear changes. The Audi RS sports suspension lowers both axels and offers firmer turning for a more dynamic, closerto-the-road driving experience. On the exterior you’ll find 20 inch ‘5-twinspoke-V’ alloy wheels, all-weather LED headlights with headlight cleaning system, power-operated tailgate, dark tinted and rearside privacy glass and heated windscreen washer jets. The Q3 is hot on safety, too. It boasts Anti-Slip Regulation, electronic stability control and tyre loss indicator.

When it comes to the interior, the RS is certainly not lacking. As standard it comes with leather heated seats (always a winner in winter), flat-bottomed RS Q3 3-spoke perforated leather-trimmed multi function steering wheel with contrast stitching and aluminium-look gear shift paddles, black piano finish inlays, dual-zone climate control, fourway lumbar support, and an extendable thigh support for those of us with a taller disposition. A 7 inch display screen comes as standard, as does DAB radio (we had the optional Bose

Donalds Volvo stocks LifePaint to help cyclists be seen

LifePaint comes to Donalds Volvo in Ipswich

F

ollowing a viral video by Volvo Cars UK, LifePaint – a reflective spray aimed at increasing the visibility and safety of cyclists on the road – is now available to Suffolk cyclists through Donalds Volvo Ipswich on West End Road. The unique reflective spray, which was first available as part of a limited pilot in April 2015, is designed to react to a car’s headlights, alerting drivers to the presence of cyclists in the dark. The product, first distributed through six London bike shops, ran out nationally within 24 hours, creating massive demand for wider distribution. Volvo Cars LifePaint is a unique illuminating safety paint which is invisible by daylight, but in the dark reflects light in the same direction as the light source, shining brightly to illuminate the objects it has been sprayed on. Volvo Cars LifePaint is transparent and can be washed off. It can be applied to clothes, shoes, helmets, pushchairs and children’s backpacks – even dog leads and collars. Its aim is to make the invisible visible at night. The inspiration for the Volvo Cars LifePaint project came from Intellisafe – Volvo’s unique pedestrian and cyclist detection system, enhanced to work in darkness on the all-new Volvo XC90 which was introduced to the UK in June this year. Intellisafe is a state-of-the-art

Volvo safety system which integrates some of the most cutting-edge safety technologies to Volvo cars. The technology uses a combination of radar sensors and cameras to identify other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and automatically brake if the driver fails to take the necessary action. This works in conjunction with Volvo’s Active Bending Headlights, which adjust left to right according to the steering input to help see round corners better and improve safety at night. Together, these innovations contribute towards Volvo’s Vision 2020 – the concept that that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020. EAUX attends… Aston Martin Launch DB10 Tour Brentwood UK

he DB10 Tour came to Brentwood to celebrate Aston Martin’s more than 50-year association with the James Bond film franchise. The event was the latest stop in a nationwide dealership tour marking the release of the 24th James Bond movie Spectre which premiered in London in October. Guests were given an exclusive viewing of the DB10, developed specifically for the film and built in-house by Aston Martin’s design and engineering teams. Only 10 of the DB10s were built and eight were used for filming. All of the DB10s survived filming. Attendees were treated to a Q&A with Spectre

stunt driver Mark Higgins and were invited to beat the former British rally champion’s time on a Sony Gran Turismo race simulator. Gavin Hawkes, general manager, Aston Martin Brentwood said: ‘we had a fantastic event giving our guests the chance to get up close and personal with the new DB10 from Spectre. Mark Higgins shared some fascinating insights into the life of a rally and stunt driver, sharing details of what it is really like to drive a Bond car.’ The event also featured a range of iconic Aston Martins including a DB5 and the opportunity to drive the latest road model, the DB9 GT, the ultimate in bespoke grand touring.

Both constructs have skylights which allow the natural light to filter in from above and feature floor to ceiling windows, but neither are south facing as the light is too harsh for the owners’ needs. The buildings are positioned closely together and have similar elements but each studio differs due to the individual requirements for each of the occupants whose artistic disciplines dictate certain things. Low energy consumption was a key element of the build and this is achieved through a combination of electrical panel heaters

Removed from the main property, the studios sit elegantly within the landscape. When the owners of the land approached Jamie Le Gallez, director at Soup Architects, they specified that the site topography was to remain unchanged and that the studios should appear to just touch the ground lightly. The studios are designed to take advantage of existing garage plots and mature planting to utilise the daylight, reduce the visual impact to the surrounding area and create beautiful views of the ever-changing garden and Suffolk sky. The studios were to be seen as a contemplative retreat and low maintenance

ldeburgh and the surrounding area could be considered one of the main creative hubs in Suffolk. It will come as no surprise then, that in July 2014 work commenced on two twinned multifunctional studio spaces set on an existing residential plot within the Aldeburgh landscape. The owners, both creatives, wanted two low maintenance spaces in which to create their art away from the hubbub of London for a few days each week.

Both studios also have LED lighting installed in order to significantly reduce the energy demand when compared to more traditional fluorescent lighting. Not only this but all rainwater being diverted into the existing balance pond and has the option to be diverted into a water storage tank. The buildings are also constructed from thermally efficient timber and a steel frame, which promotes a more environmentally friendly way of life by reducing the need for using the heating as much; during January between 10am and 4pm, the heating was not required as the

Jamie Le Gallez, director at SOUP Architects, explains about the decision to use corrugated panels for the exterior: ‘historically our client’s family is deeply routed in the supply and construction of corrugated iron buildings of the early 1900s such as churches and huts, and this is referenced with the use of the corrugated panels that also relate the studios contextually to the many agricultural outbuildings in the area and create a modern vernacular language.’ A pragmatic approach is key to all of Soup Architects thinking as is managing the impact of site activity on the environment and using locally sourced materials; Robert Norman Construction was brought in as a building contractor and G C Robertson and Associates worked on the studios as structural engineer. The studios were announced as one of the 2015 winners of the RIBA Regional Awards, an accolade that recognises important contributions to architecture across the UK. The studios demonstrate that a simple choice of materials, careful consideration into sustainability and attention to detail can lead to a highly successful result.

ith the cold weather now in full swing, there’s nothing better than making your living space feel warm and cosy. Whether you’ve a large open plan space, a library room or a living area, there are some things that you can put into place and incorporate to give your home instant warmth whilst the frost bites outside.

START WITH THE BASICS A good grey or taupe colour for your sofa is an excellent choice. Either will be a good background for any colour you may wish to accessorise with. It will also allow you to change the decoration of the room easily. If you go for an upholstered sofa you have a more traditional or modern feel. Loose covers are very practical as they can be removed and washed and provide a more relaxed country feel.

ACCESSORISE Find a colour theme or hue that you can use throughout your accessories. Don’t be too matching. You could pick up the colour of another chair in the room to bring into the cushion choices. Or even choose an existing cushion and pull colours out of the design. If you want to use a number of colours, choose a painting you may have in the room and pull colours from there. Plush velvets in rich jewel colours like peacock blue, reds and purples will really draw the eye.

Work on an odd number of cushions. It will keep things looking balanced but definitely use different sizes of cushions. It will help keep your sofa looking inviting and cosy.

TEXTURE I cannot stress the importance of texture in the choice of fabrics for cushions and throws for your sofa. Soft furnishings will help to define the look of your scheme. I like to balance linen and weaves for my cushions with tweeds and a wool throw or two. If you prefer something softer or a bit more sophisticated try embroidered silk cushions with a cashmere throw. Pure decadence would be a reindeer hide or sheep skin draped over the back of the sofa. Swap a hard glass coffee table for a soft ottoman.

It is the small touches that make a big difference so don’t overlook a few scented candles dotted about the place. If you’ve got tall ceilings, you can fill the vertical height or bare corners with tall potted plants. And don’t overlook the benefit of great lighting to completely change the feel and look of a space. Choosing a lamp with a dimmer switch can allow you to create different ambiance and instant ‘cozification’.

There are hundreds of fabrics out there that feature amazing patterns: geometrics, stripes, florals, and plains. But consider the scale of your patterns to the scale and size of your cushions. Trims are also limitless – my heart does flutter for a bit of trim!

here are lots of exciting things to look forward to in 2016, not only the longer days and warmer weather but if you are in the market for home furnishings then you are in for a treat. In furniture oak still features strongly; expect to see stronger lines and more painted and washed finishes. Eclectic groupings are also great fun, team dining tables with chairs in leather, fabric or wicker to inject texture and a more relaxed air. The trend on natural flooring materials will continue, whether your preference is for hard or soft, wood, wool and sisal all create a feeling of quality and echo the ‘local’ slant in our lifestyle choices. When it comes to colour, it is not entirely out with the old and in with the new, grey is still very prevalent and often teamed with blue but there will be a new wave of yellow, green and coral with a soft vintage hue which whilst stronger than a pastel is not as sharp as the acids previously seen. Textures and layering will also have a make over; look out for more velvets and crewel type work. There will be lots of natural fabrics and hints to traditional methods giving patterns a decidedly bohemian intonation. A specialist cigar collection is housed on humidifier shelves for freshness. Lawson Robb specialises in unique materials and finishes; opulent walls were created with mirrored verre eglomisee, smoked oak panelling, leather and velvet upholstery. To ensure technology is installed in a bespoke way, AV equipment is concealed by engraved mirrors in a geometrical pattern. To add to the mood of the cigar room, the lighting is concealed and can be dimmed.

5,000 square meters large and 10 stories high, the Yas Viceroy stands tall above the Formula One racetrack that winds through its centre, teetering over the edge of the yacht marina on its east side. The bridge was designed using a structural approach called the monocoque, which means that, like an eggshell, the internal load is supported by the bridge’s external layer. Like most contemporary luxury developments in the United Arab Emirates, the Yas Viceroy offers fantastic views over the desert landscape. Head up to the roof to enjoy sunset views over the marina from the Longitude Pool Bar, or appreciate panoramic scenes of Yas Island from the Latitude Pool Bar. Investing pensions in residential property Scrutton Bland directors Gary Riches (Independent Financial Advice) and Gavin Birchall (Tax) take a closer look at pension freedoms

S

ince April 2015, many individuals have been tempted with early access to their pensions, with the relaxation for accessing pension funds often referred to as ‘pension freedoms’. £2.5 billion was withdrawn from pensions between April and June 2015 according to the Association of British Insurers. However some of the adverse tax consequences, which are surprisingly high, are less well known. Pensions have been accessed for various reasons, but some of the interest has been with a view to investing in buy to let residential investment property, which currently cannot be held within a pension fund. This interest is generally not due to a desire to become a landlord, but is largely driven by low returns from cash accounts and historically better returns from growth and rental income from property. In general, after payment of tax free cash, the remainder of funds withdrawn is taxed as income, and depending on total taxable income, the cash from the pension fund can be taxed at 40 percent or more. With the loss of personal tax allowance above £100,000, the funds can suffer tax as high as effectively 60 percent. The headline returns from property investment may be high but they may not fully reflect all aspects of taxes and other costs which need to be considered. Taking an example of a £150,000 pension pot, assuming tax free cash at £37,500, the

balance would be taxed as income. Assuming no other taxable income, the tax would be £36,903 and the pension capital, after tax would be £113,097. Assuming a very high buy to let property yield of 7.5 percent, rent would be £8,482 before tax. Comparatively the fund, if left within the pension, would not suffer the tax deduction so would require a yield to provide the same gross income of only 5.65 percent. Other factors to consider are legal and other costs in purchasing the property, possible additional borrowing and borrowing costs and a managing agent may be used, incurring fees which further impact on rental income, as will provision for repairs. As well as costs there are other important tax factors to be considered such as Capital Gains Tax when a property is sold and possible Inheritance Tax on death. The Government have also made announcements regarding taxation restrictions on buy to let property relating to interest on borrowings, further reducing the tax efficiency of property investment for higher rate tax payers. Apart from financial considerations, investment in a buy to let residential property may require the investor to take on day-to-day responsibilities such as property maintenance and rent collection, which may well not be wanted in retirement. The ‘unaccessed’ pension by comparison, will grow free of Capital Gains Tax; a quarter of the fund is available tax free and a lower or zero income tax rate if gradually drawn.

Pension income will be regular and can be guaranteed for life or joint life and unlike property investment would not suffer periods of non-occupation with a loss of rental income. Alternatively pension incomes can be drawn with flexible payments. When a person dies his or her pension funds are often considered to be ‘lost’. This is generally not the case as the pensions can pass free of any tax on death under the age of 75 (meaning no Capital Gains, income or Inheritance Tax). Death over age 75 incurs 45 percent tax until 5 April 2016, reducing thereafter. In summary, with taxation improvements in pensions and the adverse tax position of using pension for property investment, great care needs to be taken when cashing in pension funds. With future reductions in pension tax relief for high earners and reductions in lifetime allowance, it is important to seek advice from an independent financial adviser when deciding upon the type of pension in retirement. EAUX speaks to the owner of The Unruly Pig in Bromeswell about the relaunch of this new pub and kitchen WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BEGIN THE UNRULY PIG? I am a walking cliché in many ways: one of many bored bankers and lawyers who yearned to change direction. I worked as lawyer for 35 years and that was more than enough for me. I have always had a passion for fabulous food and great wine and bored my family and friends for far too long about opening a gastro pub. But now I know I have done it and I’m enjoying the whole experience immensely!

WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN LIKE SO FAR? Whilst my feet are still firmly on the ground, the response so far has been fabulous. We have already been lucky enough to be have been recommended by both the Financial Times and Sunday Times. If I tell you that we have had to double the size of our overflow car park that may speak for itself.

HOW HAVE YOU RECOVERED FROM THE TRAGIC FIRE THAT OCCURRED IN 2015? Well, I am not sure I have actually recovered fully from the fire yet. Indeed, seeing the building alight early on the morning of the fire (23rd June, 2015) is something I will probably never forget. That said, what has helped get us through this dreadful episode is two things. Firstly, the overwhelming support and good wishes of our customers which has been simply humbling. Our customers just kept saying to us that they just wanted us back on

our trotters as soon as possible. Secondly, being listed in The Good Food Guide 2016 (with the highest rating for any restaurant/pub in the Ipswich/Woodbridge area) was such a huge tonic. It was vindication of what we have been trying to achieve and truly set us on the road to recovery.

THE MENU?

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE ART THAT YOU’VE CHOSEN?

I chip in and occasionally some of my suggestions make it onto the menu, like chicken skin popcorn. We do have great fun brainstorming and tasting dishes for the menu. The final decision lies with me as to what goes on and what comes off our menus but happily Dave and I agree about almost everything. We make a great team.

It’s an eclectic mix of local and contemporary art which has received much praise; our customers seem to like how the art provides a personal touch. I have driven my wife bonkers over many years buying far too much art with an eye to one day opening a restaurant. And now, at last, I have somewhere to hang all these pictures and paintings (some of which have been stored in my cellar at home for far too long). Local artists such as Martin Battye and Martin Laurence have also kindly loaned some of their work for display (and for sale, should they pique anyone’s interest).

WHAT MAKES THE UNRULY PIG DIFFERENT TO OTHER PUBS AND RESTAURANTS IN THE REGION? Our Inka Grill is a clear differentiator. I like to kid myself that it’s a team effort but the reality is that most of the great dishes we have on our menu are suggestions made by Dave Wall, our head chef (who formerly cooked at several Gordon Ramsay restaurants in London and most recently at Le Talbooth in Dedham).

DO YOU THINK THE REGION OFFERS LOTS FOR FOOD-LOVERS? Being a foodie in Suffolk is just glorious. We are so lucky as our county offers some of the finest produce in the country – great food just on our doorstep. We are also spoilt for choice with so much fine food on offer from East Anglia. Cromer crabs, Binham blue cheese, Suffolk samphire, Tuddenham asparagus, Dingley Dell pork – we are so very lucky to live and work in a region that is so abundant with great food.

o many people, financial security means not only having the ability to afford to do the things they want, when they want, but also having peace of mind should the unexpected happen. Most of us lead busy lives and tend to put off thinking about the future, often until it’s too late. However, forward planning now could prove invaluable later in life. For example, do you know what sort of pension you can expect to get when you retire? How much your family would get if you were seriously ill or were to die? Whether you can afford for your children to go on to further education? If you’re paying more tax than necessary? If your savings and investments are in the right place? Who will be the biggest inheritor of your estate? Inheritance Tax (IHT) can appear to be someone else’s problem – an issue only for the very wealthy. However, while it may appear to be a rich person’s tax, once the value of someone’s house, investments, savings and articles of value such as jewellery or antiques is added up, the potential reach of IHT extends to many. Even the mere mention of tax makes most people shudder. That’s because giving our hard earned money to the taxman is something we all want to avoid, but often we either run out of time or don’t always know where to put our savings in order to keep them away from the clutches of the tax man. Often described as a voluntary tax, around one in 10 estates are predicted to have an

IHT liability by 2018/19 (Office for Budget Responsibility – economic and fiscal outlook March 2014), making this an increasingly important area that people need to address, and getting back to my earlier comment, it is often left until sometimes it is too late in the day. In short, inheritance tax planning has never been more relevant for so many people. With a significant amount of people’s wealth in the UK tied up in their home, the recent changes to the inheritance tax rules are clearly a positive step. But it will be of limited value for those people who find the residential nil rate band still too low, or those who have estates worth more than £2 million. Therefore it is likely that individuals will have just as much inheritance tax planning to do over the next few years as they do today. As such, we believe investments that qualify for business property relief from inheritance tax will remain attractive to investors. The scope of business property relief has expanded since its introduction in 1976, making qualifying investments attractive to those looking to plan for potential inheritance tax liabilities. Shares in a company that qualifies for business property relief have to be held for at least two years, and still held at the time of death for the investment to become fully exempt from inheritance tax. The speed at which business property relief qualifying investments become exempt from inheritance tax can be very attractive and differs from other inheritance tax planning solutions.

Assets settled into discretionary trusts or gifted during someone’s lifetime typically remain within the settlor’s estate for seven years. Settlements and gifts also require control of – and access to – your money to be given up for good.
