Red Rooster Festival © Red Rooster Festival

The Red Rooster festival is set in the idyllic private grounds of Euston Hall and is an event inspired by the sounds and aromas of America’s Deep South Suffolk R&B and Blues. Acts such as CW Stoneking, Son of Dave, Dollar Bill and The Rumble will be making appearances throughout the festival. Alongside the main and smaller stages the Red Rooster will be hosting campfires under the stars. The event is able to offer exclusive use of Lotus Belle Tents. They can sleep up to four people and contain all the romantic charm of a bell tent but the space of a yurt. Lotus Belles are made from the most luxurious white cotton canvas and are shaped like a Hershey’s Kiss! Each tent is lined with a shag pile carpet and is roomy enough to stand up in, even for the tallest of campers. All in all, they make for a much more comfortable camping experience. They come fully fitted with a watertight groundsheet, covered with cosy rugs, a scattering of cushions, a small handmade table and tea light lanterns.

In 2015 the Aldeburgh Festival also spreads its wings and brings a mystery event to a location in central Ipswich. The festival is able to offer fine dining with entertainment overlooking the reed beds as well as champagne receptions throughout the day.

Deben Yacht Club D eben Yacht Club (DYC) is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the world, having started in 1838 – the year Queen Victoria was crowned and Woodbridge decided to celebrate with a Regatta; and so began an association between the club and town. The club is located on the River Deben, which flows from Woodbridge out to the sea at Felixstowe Ferry. This lovely, unspoilt river offers beautiful views and other anchorages at Waldringfield and Ramsholt – great places to stop off for a drink at the local or have a picnic. No wonder it is so popular with people who want to get on the water. DYC is a friendly and family-orientated club welcoming members of all ages and abilities – the perfect place for people to be introduced to sailing. Older members recall that getting

EAUX finds out about one of the oldest sailing clubs in the world right here in Suffolk

in a boat was just a natural part of growing up. In those days they sailed wooden boats – messing about both on and in the river was a normal part of their childhood. Young people continue to take advantage of the fun and adventure offered by the river. One of the clubs’ claims to fame is that transatlantic sailor Nick Bubb, who helped break the sailing world speed record, learnt to sail there. DYC prides itself in offering regular opportunities for members to learn to either sail or to improve their sailing and racing so they can take part in club events with growing confidence. It gained RYA Training Centre status in 2013 for both dinghy sailing and power boating. Two courses planned for the spring are a Sailing for Improvers (RYA Stages 2-3/Level 2) on four weekend days from 19 April to 9 May and the Sailing for Beginners course

(RYA Stages 1-2/Level 1) on four consecutive weekend days from 17 May to 6 June. Lazy sailing sessions held throughout the summer provide members with an opportunity for a relaxed mid-week sail when they can practice their skills and enjoy the opportunity to meet friends – these have proved particularly popular with youngsters in the long summer holidays. For those who like to compete, the club runs a full racing programme for both dinghies and yachts throughout the season. A programme of improvements to the facilities at the club has resulted in a new slipway being opened last year and currently additional showers and toilets are being added thanks to grants from Sports England and Suffolk Coastal District Council. Highlights of the year are the Annual Regatta Week and (a new addition to the programme last year) Junior Regatta aimed at encouraging youngsters to discover the fun of racing. The club also holds events in conjunction with the town for example the annual Woodbridge Regatta which attracts many visitors to the riverside and the biannual Maritime Woodbridge – a celebration of Woodbridge’s maritime heritage and a demonstration of how that has continued for thousands of years right to the present day. EAUX visits Bang & Olufsen Colchester to find out what it is that makes their customers return time and time again

B

ang and Olufsen was founded in Denmark back in 1925 by Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen with intentions of evolving the brand into an international design icon and symbol of audio-visual excellence. We think it’s fair to say that 90 years on, they have succeeded in their goals.

Michael and Robert place great emphasis on greeting customers on a first name basis, and the proof is in the pudding – around 80% of customers buy again within two years. The team has a great rapport with each other as well as with customers, so far as going out for dinner with them or popping in for a glass of

wine to see how B&O products are enriching their customers’ lives. Michael says: ‘People trust us enough to call up, ask our advice and say “yes” over the phone.’ Buying B&O is unlike any other store on the high street; it’s about the journey. ‘Clients

2015 marks the 15th anniversary for Bang & Olufsen of the Colchester, which has been providing top quality entertainment products to Colchester and the surrounding areas since 1999. The Colchester store is proud to be one of the only stores in the UK to have a BeoLiving room which showcases the very finest in B&O products combined with integrated systems such as remote control lighting, transforming the store into a true sensory experience. Shopping with Bang & Olufsen is unlike visiting any other store. Once you step through the door you enter a B&O Play zone where you can touch, play with and experience all the luxury products available. The Colchester team is very well established and is made up of Robert, Michael and Jonathan, plus installation specialist Leigh. Two members have been with the business since the start, and between them the team have a combined 45 years worth of experience with the Bang & Olufsen brand. Emotion is an important part of the store, the team love to make the experience a one-to-one exclusive. ‘It’s about guiding the customer to make the right choice,’ explains Michael. ‘We like to take a relaxed approach and show potential clients our knowledge and the quality of the products. We are passionate about the brand and visitors often mention that this really shines through.’

usually pop in to see what is new in store,’ says Michael. ‘We introduce them to our range of products and then tailor a proposal to the client’s home and specification, personalising it specially for their individual requirements. We can tailor proposals room by room and are very proud to offer a high attention to detail.’

Products are made to order in Denmark and have a waiting time of approximately 2-6 weeks, which only adds to the excitement. A speaker is not just a speaker when you shop with B&O. The Bang & Olufsen signature style combines sleek wood, glass and aluminium, which make B&O products more like furniture, considered by many owners as the jewellery of their homes. Bang & Olufsen specialise in multi-room and totally integrated systems that can be controlled by one handheld control. ‘We go one step further to make sure our customers are happy,’ explains Robert. ‘We had a customer who was so excited about his new television arriving that we moved everything in his room ourselves to accommodate an 85inch TV. alph & Russo’s SS15 collection reminisces Botticelli’s Primavera and Poussin’s Realm of Flora in a celebration of the Goddess of Spring through a palette of crisp pomegranate pinks, ethereal lilacs and soft blacks, as well as cascades of organza, gazar and chiffon, alluding to an air of balletic exuberance. The Australian-born duo has created an endlessly wearable collection that transcends the barriers between fashion and nature, showcasing the true beauty of spring and immersing the wearer in a medley of hip-skimming dresses and voluminous capes capable of creating stunning silhouettes.

DO YOU WEAR or does colour wear you?

EAUX LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE - SUFFOLK EDITION

EAUX’s fashion editor Pam Davis of Fashion Candy Style gives her expert advice

I

Once you find out which shades work best for you shopping for clothes becomes much easier, providing you with a greater selection for putting outfits together. There are three dominant colouring types: fair, medium and neutral. People will usually put themselves into one of these categories.

’ve had a fantastic career working as a model for big name brands and as a stylist, personal shopper and event manager for my own business Fashion Candy Style. This has allowed me to work with big names in the fashion industry and pick up a thing or two! As EAUX resident fashion editor I’m here to help you look your very best.

For women, there are three dominant colouring types. If you are blonde you will usually be classed as fair/warm. You will usually have a delicate look which is soft and warm. Your depth of colouring is light so choose a darker tone and contrast with a light apricot colour to complement. When choosing clothes opt for warm colours with golden undertones.

The colours you wear say a lot about you; they may indicate your mood, your style or your attitude. The way they blend with each other and your complexion is important to building a versatile wardrobe because colour makes the initial impact.

If you have brown or auburn hair you will most likely have a medium/cool skin tone. You will usually have a warm, golden look. When wearing neutral colours make sure to balance them with lighter shades. When choosing clothes opt for pinks, reds, blues and violets with green undertones.

In the fashion industry there are certain buzzwords for colour matching – warm undertones and cool undertones – and once you know what they are you’ll find shopping becomes much easier. Our skin’s surface tone is the colour that you would describe yourself as having (ivory, light, medium, tan, dark) and the undertone is the hue that shines through beneath the surface.

If you have dark or olive skin your will have a cool/neutral skin tone. This means you can wear shades from porcelain to black and all the shades in between. You have a strong look with a cool undertone. Bold colours bring out the best in your skin. When it comes to the gents there are three

main colouring types, too. High contrast is where the complexion and hair colour are contrasting, for example, pale skin with black hair. If you fall into this category you should be looking to mimic this colour contrast with your clothing. Team dark suits with light coloured shirts to complement your skin. Men who are low contrast are most commonly those with light skin and light hair colour, however, red-haired and bald men also tend to fall into this category. If you are in this category you should opt for a monochrome look to avoid looking washed out. Choose earth toned suits paired with light coloured shirts so as not to draw too much attention away from your face. If you don’t fall into high or low contrast categories you will be medium contrast. You have dark or tanned skin with black or brown hair, light complexion with light brown hair or light complexion with grey hair. If you fall into this category you will have the most leeway when picking colours to wear; however, you should be careful to pick colours that, when combined, will have some ‘pop’ to them. If you have darker skin always try to opt for clothes which have high contrast to the skin for the wow factor. ienke Jongsma has been designing and producing bags, purses and wallets since 2003. Having worked in the graphic design department of a well-known jeans company in Amsterdam, Nienke moved to the UK. She worked on the fashion collections, advertising and catalogues and then discovered event design purely by chance. ‘Event design combined my graphics experience with 3D design and I became familiar with fabrics, dressing and set building. When given a sewing machine for my birthday in 2003 this all changed. I started working with leather and canvas more or less straight away. I kept freelancing in the event industry but was sewing at every given opportunity.’ Nienke first started selling her leather bags,

purses and wallets in the indoor market at Brick Lane every Sunday. Nienke is now based in the village of Blaxhall, near Woodbridge. Although Suffolk is miles away from London, there is still a vibrant fashion community, especially in Woodbridge. Nienke has noticed a very definite increase in interest in her designs after moving to Woodbridge just three years ago. ‘It was tough in the beginning but now people know where to find me. My own local network has expanded and I get more and more enquiries every week, which is very encouraging. There is definitely a vibrant fashion community in Suffolk. For example, Woodbridge has a wide variety of designer boutiques. I sell my bags

with Mandy Leeson-Vanil, who is based here and she styles her shop very up to date with current trends. Plus she has a very fashion conscious following of customers! It’s not all about London! Self taught Nienke is inspired by the early 1900s – just before, during and after WWI, and the Vandertas brand epitomises this vintage style with a modern twist. ‘I also get a lot of inspiration from vintage army accessories and vintage fabrics. I keep an eye out to see what is new and what the colours will be each season, but I like to stay fairly timeless and individual.’ Nienke is very particular about which fabrics

she selects in order to accurately portray the Vandertas brand. ‘I need to choose colours, patterns and leather that are within remit of what I designed the finished look ‘Vandertas’ bags to be. I guess it depends on what inspiration lies behind my choice. I also try to make sure I know where the leather comes from and if it is ethically and environmentally sound. Which is not always easy.’ It is through this selective process that Nienke has gained an edge in the fashion industry.

If a client is based nearby they will usually attend an appointment in the workshop. ‘This allows me to show models of bags and samples of leather, fabrics and fixings for an up close and personal take and experience. If a client is based further away I send samples by post and even a sample bag if necessary and we discuss requirements by phone or email. So far this has worked very well and my clients feel very looked after.’

Next, Nienke begins skiving the edges and punches holes for the rivets and fixings and glues the edges and seams. Then bag is sewn together inside out, turned out the right way and then closures are fixed and the lining inserted and sewn in. The frame is sewn into the bag and bent to shape, the handle and toplock fixed into place and the shoulder strap sewn to finish.

There is a vast increase in the demand for bespoke bags and Nienke has recently had more and more call for Gladstone bags for GPs and midwives over the last couple of years. The process of ordering a bespoke bag

Chenevix Jewellery, a pretty boutique situated on Woodbridge’s Market Hill, houses the workspace of qualified gemmologist and talented jewellery designer, Susannah Chenevix-Trench

W

ell known for designing and crafting bespoke jewellery, often remodelling existing pieces, Susannah focuses on creating a collaborative relationship with her clientele, ensuring that the design meets their desired specifications. She succeeds in producing jewellery that is both practical and eye-catchingly beautiful. Originally working as a senior executive in the UK’s top international relocation company, Susannah moved to Hong Kong in 1988 to pursue her lifelong passion for jewellery and design. She qualified as a gemmologist and jewellery designer in 1993, receiving prestigious certifications, including Fellow of the Gemmological Association and a Pearl Grading Diploma from the Asian Gemmological Institute. Having set up her business in 1997 Susannah currently works from an airy and light design studio established in 2010, situated above her boutique, Chenevix Jewellery, which overlooks Woodbridge’s picturesque medieval Market Square. The well-travelled designer states that most of her inspirations stem from the ‘natural blends of colours found in Suffolk, whether it is in the fields, forests, sea or sky’; she has an admiration for all things beautiful and this translates into her designs. However, her greatest inspiration lies in crafting pieces of jewellery that her clients fall in love with. Having worked as a consultant gemmologist in the Far East, Susannah possesses an extensive contact list of trusted gemstone and pearl dealers. Due to the bespoke nature of her work, the gemstones sourced from these suppliers could be rare, unusual or even museum-quality, resulting in a truly unique finished product. When working with clients on bespoke pieces,

Susannah adopts a very personalised, handson approach, all the while keeping her own inspirations in mind. Customers may have an idea that requires recycling a gemstone from an out-dated piece of jewellery and transforming it into something more wearable or they may wish to design a piece from scratch. As great emotional and sentimental value accompanies each request, Susannah takes great care in reflecting these attributes during the design process. She ascertains her clients’ individual styles, taking into account the practicality of the jewellery in question before creating scaled drawings and wax carvings to show the client a realistic image of the potential finished article. The process of evolving a piece of jewellery from an idea to a finished product can be long and elaborate. Sourcing the right stones, such as a piece of opal from a specific region, can take time, but customer satisfaction is a very important priority. Most designs take five to six weeks to complete, allowing for the production and hallmarking procedure, but Susannah has been known to create pieces in just a week, whilst some designs have been ongoing projects that have taken months to accomplish. Many of Susannah’s clients – an astounding 95% – return to Chenevix having been satisfied with their initial purchase, and it is obvious that a high level of trust exists between the designer and her customers, so time is not often an issue. Susannah explains her business philosophy: ‘We aim to make buying jewellery a thoroughly relaxed, enjoyable and stress-free experience, providing a top quality personal service in an informal, calm atmosphere, making our customers feel special no matter how large or small the purchase.’ Susannah works with precious metals, including silver, gold and palladium, to produce her jewellery. This ensures that each piece is

durable as well as beautiful and unique. Many of the pieces stocked at Chenevix are one-off designs so customers have the chance to see for themselves the quality and craftsmanship that go into Susannah’s work. Chenevix also stocks a handful of carefully selected brand names with pieces ranging from enamelled cufflinks to bridal accessories, and Tahitian and Indonesian South Sea Pearls. A simple stroll past the shop window engages shoppers with a glimpse of the talented design-work available. Not one to shy away from ambition, Susannah has lots of exciting endeavours in the pipeline. Already this year, she has commenced the design process for several commissioned pieces including a pair of diamond dropearrings, a silver opal and black onyx ring and a gold necklace with pastel-coloured stones. Coming up this year is an exclusive red carpet commission; however, Susannah is no stranger to the world of celebrity, having had her jewellery worn by famous musicians and actors at prestigious events including a royal wedding. Her creations even made an appearance in the classic British romantic comedy, ‘Love Actually’ – so you know you’re in good company! Susannah designs all types of jewellery, with her most popular items being rings and earrings. Upon attending a free consultation appointment, you will be welcomed into a relaxed atmosphere where you can discuss the prospect of making your vision a reality, whether it is a special diamond eternity ring, a set of classic cufflinks for a milestone birthday or a stunning engagement ring for a special proposal. Creating the

perfect w o r b E

yebrow shaping can do more to change your appearance than many other beauty treatments. Whether you’re 20 or 60, high or low maintenance, male or female, taking the time to have your eyebrows groomed is well worth the effort, time and money. Keeping on top of your brows not only keeps them looking smart and polished but it widens the appearance of the eyes creating a fuller, more youthful appearance. There are a variety of different shapes and when you go into a salon your therapist will take into consideration your skin tone, face shape, length and features before making a decision on what shape your eyebrows should be. It’s not just women who benefit from well shaped brows. A little eyebrow grooming on a gentleman can mean the difference between scruffy or suave. When it comes to men, it’s important not to over shape the eyebrows – a little clean-up is all most of them need to look their very best.

The results from having your eyebrows waxed or tweezed usually lasts about three weeks unless you’ve been having them maintained for years; then the hair growth cycle will start to slow. You can maintain your eyebrows at home by using high quality tweezers to remove the new fresh hair underneath the brow, leaving the shape until your next appointment with your therapist. We have just brought a fantastic new treatment into The Beauty Rooms called Mii Brows. This is a brow treatment created by us but defined by you, allowing us to give you the eyebrows you’ve always wanted. Mii Brows is particularly good for ladies that have over plucked or have lost hair due to illness or treatments. Mii Brows is created using a mineral wax, long-lasting semi-permanent tint, different shades of brow pencils, powders, contour, highlighters and finishing brow gel. If you would like to book an appointment or for a free consultation call 01206 211831 or visit our website www.thebeautyroomsessex.co.uk

Rhianna Prentice from The Beauty Rooms, Marks Tey, explains how keeping your eyebrows groomed is essential for both men and women

Here are my six beauty brow tips for keeping your eyebrows in tip-top shape at home in between treatments; Only tweeze one hair at a time and only take hairs from underneath the brow Tweeze right after a shower or bath because your skin is clean and pores are open, which minimises the pain. If you don’t have time to shower you can hold a warm cloth on your brows for five minutes to soften the hair. Place the tweezers at the root of the hair, get a firm grip and pull in the direction of the hair growth to stop the hair snapping. Use a pencil or powder to help keep the shape and colour. Using a highlighter can help accentuate your brows, causing them to look fuller and stand out. Brush your brows softly then apply a small amount of Vaseline at night to help them to grow in the right direction.

YOUR HEALTH COUNTS Health Counts is Suffolk’s leading skin laser and aesthetic clinic providing Suffolk with Harley Street-quality service at East Anglian prices

H

aving opened in 1988 and moved to Ipswich’s Arcade Street in 1990, Health Counts is the oldest established clinic of its type in Suffolk and has a wealth of experience and qualified medical expertise under its belt. This award winning clinic looks set to continue leading the way for the many years to come. The exceptional levels of medical and personal service are confirmed by the comments from patients in the regular audits carried out by the clinic. With nearly 30 years of experience, the team of fully trained and qualified technicians, nurses and doctors carry out procedures within an environment constantly monitored for its safety and efficiency of treatment by the Government’s Care Quality Commission (CQC). This is the same license awarded to hospitals, both NHS and private, as well dentists and care homes – they are all judged by all the same measures – and the last inspection from the CQC reported that Health Counts sailed through all assessments, met the necessary requirements and had great feedback. Sandy De ‘Ath, resident medical director of Health Counts and a GMC registered doctor, oversees all treatments at the

clinic ensuring that the quality of service and care are carried out to the highest levels. Unlike beauty salons, Health Counts is medically insured due to the powerful laser equipment used during procedures. As each of the different lasers is a dedicated medical grade stand-alone device, they’re able to get the very best results in fewer treatments than other salon type multipurpose machines. Beauty salons tend to use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), which isn’t anywhere near as effective as a dedicated single purpose

– and so does your look! laser. Those used by Health Counts are far more powerful, allowing them to achieve better results in fewer treatments. Health Counts is equipped with an arsenal of specialist skills, techniques and tools for rolling back the years and fighting the tell-tale signs of ageing. Dermal fillers of varying types can be used to replace the lost volume in cheeks, temples and brows as well as around the chin, lips and nose to mouth lines. The result is instantaneous and can last for up to two years. Botox is used to smooth and lift the brow. All these injectable medical aesthetic treatments are carried out only by Dr Sandy. She trained in these treatments and advanced techniques in 2005 and has been acclaimed throughout East Anglia for her skill in producing a natural result.

Lasers can be used to tackle thread veins, lesions, pigmentation problems and liver spots. Different lasers can be used to treat acne, warts, verrucas and even cold sores. The electronic micro-needling equipment can stimulate collagen and resurface tired or blotchy skin. Health Counts has also offered laser based tattoo removal since 1995, using three different ‘q-switched’ lasers, enabling most tattoo colours to be cleared. This is the safest proven method of removing tattoos and does not leave scarring as the laser only reacts to skin containing coloured tattoo pigments. These lasers are vastly superior to many other machines and Health Counts has more experience in this sphere than anyone else. The most popular treatment at the clinic is laser hair removal, which Health Counts has been performing for 11 years. During this time, staff have tackled a huge range of varied scenarios and circumstances, providing them with the experience for confronting diverse hair-related issues. With the ability to remove unwanted hair safely on any skin colour and in any area on the body, Health Counts lasers get the best results in the fewest treatments possible compared to any other device. Sarah Carless, Director of Health Counts, states that ‘92% of our patients rated their treatment results between eight to ten out of ten, with 60% awarding ten out of ten’. Health Counts focuses on patient satisfaction as a priority. Customers enter through a light and airy reception area before having their individual needs assessed by a specialist prior to the treatment. Potential patients are welcome to a no charge, no obligation consultation in which they would be walked through the procedure and informed about the risks and side effects of specific treatments. Their service is totally confidential; however the client is able to bring along a friend to accompany them for the duration of the consultation or even the treatment itself. Customers have testified that ‘The service has always been excellent’ with one simply stating, ‘Very happy with my results and lovely staff!’ Health Counts are based at 14 Arcade Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 1EJ. THE GENTLEMAN’S

Grooming Arsenal Men’s grooming is no longer a word whispered in a dark corner, says James Hellyer from James Daniel Hadleigh

W

e work harder and longer than we ever have so why shouldn’t we take better care of ourselves to ensure we look and feel our best? The stigma that was once attached to male grooming is most defiantly a thing of the past. We have a much larger range of top quality products readily available. We have images of ’beautiful’ celebs on red carpets and St Lucian beaches thrust in front of our eyes on a daily basis. I can tell you now that 99% of them will be using the vast amounts of products available to their advantage. In the past a gentleman’s bathroom cabinet would’ve consisted of soap and old spice. Now, there are five essential items every man should have by his side whether stowed away in the bathroom cabinet or thrown in the suitcase for a business trip. A good quality zingy cleansing shampoo will wake up even the sleepiest of gents in the morning and get rid of the previous day’s build-up. Conditioner will give you a real refreshing buzz but also leave your hair soft and manageable. Don’t go without a premium

face wash to cleanse away the grime that collects on our skin over the course of a busy day. Face wash will leave your skin feeling lovely and clean. Follow with a moisturiser that you can use after face wash every day that isn’t going to leave your skin oily. Finish your morning regime with a salon quality hair product that suits your hair and haircut – this is a must in every man’s armory. If you have a really good barber doing a top job and you’re not using the right products then you’re not getting the most out of your cut. These will make such a difference to how you feel within yourself but also others will see a new more alive and alert you. Each day in our salon we see gentleman of all ages, sizes and positions within our society open up to these ideas and start to take that extra little care of themselves. And why shouldn’t we? Our significant others have been doing it longer than we can remember and we think they always look attractive so if you can’t beat them join them. odern day living leaves me increasingly busy without much time to pamper myself – perhaps one of the reasons I have a beard, however the importance of looking (and feeling) my best is becoming much more of a priority than in the past. Is it because I want to look nice in my suit? Or is it essentially a much more egotistical reason altogether? Looking my best provides me with a great feeling of pride and allows me to walk through my daily life with confidence. Sometimes in a busy life it is hard to get yourself to the barber shop, so below are my tips to maintaining your standards in between visits. It all starts with the face. Perhaps we are lucky, as men, in that we typically do not have to concern ourselves with makeup, or maybe we are unfortunate, as we cannot hide what we don’t want others to see. I’ll let you in to a secret – moisturiser is a God send! Yes, that’s right, I moisturise. I’ve sampled a variety of men’s moisturisers and find that using them leaves my skin looking its best. I like to use a gentle, sensitive moisturiser to ensure I don’t make myself look worse by clogging my pores. The idea is that your skin absorbs the goodness and in turn looks

fresh, soft and clean. But what if you have a beard? Won’t the moisturiser make your hair sticky? Well, I can tell you that there is a different product all together for you. Beard oil is so simple yet such a pleasure to use. After washing and drying, apply one pipette of your chosen beard oil (I prefer The Whisky Wolf, or Apothecary87) to your hands, rub over your palms and massage into your beard. Ensure that you get to the base of your beard and all the skin underneath. Comb through your beard with your chosen comb and you are ready to go. For added volume and softness, I use a hairdryer whilst combing downwards. The oil will help to promote growth and maintain the health of your beard. It will also ensure that the skin underneath your beard is not dry and leaves you without any beard dandruff. This works well for stubble too.

‘BEARDS ARE SCRUFFY, I PREFER TO BE CLEAN SHAVEN.’ A good shave is impossible to beat. Even the hairiest man cannot deny this pleasure. Whether you use a three blade modern razor, a traditional cutthroat razor or an electric shaver, there are some important things to consider: Are your blades fresh and clean? You won’t get the perfect shave unless you prepare your razor. Are you using oil, soap, foam or shaving dry? All these factors will make a difference. Personally, I oil my skin before applying Arko Turkish Shaving Soap with a traditional brush and opt for a traditional cutthroat razor for my grooming needs. Look after your pores. Using hot water will expose your pores to anything you are using on your face so when you have

finished shaving ensure you wash your face, use cold water to close your pores and then apply your aftershave balm or gel.

HAIR ON TOP So now that we have ensured our faces are looking good, what about the hair on top? Obviously nothing beats a good visit to the barbers but as I said, it is not always possible to visit as regularly as you’d like. Consider getting your hair cut shorter so that it lasts slightly longer. Also consider which style you choose. A simple ‘short back and sides’ is not as common as you may think. Modern barbers are extremely versatile and proud individuals and should be able to offer you a lot more than a quick clipper cut. If you are in and out in 10 minutes, you may have reason to question why? A good visit to the barbers should last you around 30 minutes. In between the all-important visits to the barber shop you will need to learn to style your own hair. This may involve tricks you never thought you would be doing, for example blowdrying your hair in the morning! Hairdryers are a great tool for setting your hair into position. A good hairstyle is styled with a hairdryer then finished with products. I style my hair into a pompadour with hot air, set it with cold air then apply strong holding Pomade before sealing the style with luxury hairspray. It may sound like a lot of hassle, but if you have already spent time on your face and beard, why would you not want to complete the routine? For more tips please visit thatlittlebarbershop.com

may take two to three years to get started and produce, but once it has a footing the plant can be productive up to 20 years so it can definitely be considered worth the wait. It takes time to grow accustomed to the asparagus harvest cycle. Although the harvest is about six weeks long it’s over just as many people start thinking about local summer produce. The asparagus harvest in Britain usually starts about the middle of April and runs until the beginning of June. Spear growth depends on temperature. If it’s cool the asparagus may need to be harvested every three days; whereas if it is hot, harvest is possible every day. Due to the vast acreage of their farm, the Blyth family uses an electric picking rig to help harvest and produce their asparagus ready to prepare for local sale. To aid production speed they also have a machine that washes and trims the asparagus; this is not only time saving but also ensures the produce is thoroughly cleaned and produced to a high standard. Asparagus is an important crop for Suffolk farmers for it is a crop that (apart from the establishment phase) does not require irrigating. Suffolk farmers have naturally limited water and irrigation resources so by growing asparagus they are saving water which can be put to use in assisting other root crops. The asparagus produced by Friday Street Farm shops over the last 30 years has become increasingly popular with locals who are regularly attracted to the freshness and reliability of the product. But now local cafés and restaurants have realised the value that good quality local crops that can provide. By recognising the freshness associated with local produce, the community’s cafés and restaurants have indulged their diners with asparagus provided by the Blyth family.

S

uffolk asparagus farmer James Blyth lives on our beautiful Heritage Coast and believes strongly that passion is the main ingredient needed to grow such labour-intensive crops as asparagus. James is a partner in Friday Street Farms, an 800 acre site that has been owned and farmed by the Blyth family for three generations and has provided the local community with fresh produce since 1976. ‘It’s important to remember that you are looking after living plants and that they require a lot of care and attention in order to flourish

48

The East of Suffolk is the perfect place to grow asparagus. ‘With its fairly warm and frost-free location and its light free-draining soils Friday Street Farm are able to help the asparagus get a good early start which is so important in the speedy eight week British season,’ says James.

There are many ways to cook and present asparagus either as a part of a main meal or a snack. James suggests covering the asparagus with some local rapeseed oil and a pinch of salt then wrapping it in foil which will season the asparagus; once wrapped place it in the BBQ for five minutes which is just enough time to soften and flavour the asparagus without removing the crunch that makes it so appealing!

Asparagus is a perennial bulb and stem vegetable that greets us every spring. It

The Ithaa, which also means mother of pearl in Dhivehi, is a beautiful underwater restaurant located in the Conrad Maldives (www.conradhotels3.hilton.com). The restaurant itself is sixteen feet below sea level and holds the capacity for 14 guests. Ithaa’s most distinctive feature is the use of curved transparent acrylic walls that offer diners a panaramic underwater view of the vibrant coral reef and its inhabitants. It was designed and built by M J Murphy Ltd; a design consultancy based in New Zealand and it was opened in April 2005. Ithaa is reached via a wooden walkway from the nearby over-water restaurant. Diners begin their meal with drinks on a specially constructed deck over the ocean and then descend to the restaurant via a spiral staircase. This allows Ithaa to offer one of the most intimate and exclusive dining experiences in the world.

FINE DINING k l o f f u S n i Our editor Victoria discovers fusion restaurant Aqua Eight

O

wned by brothers Vincent and Patrick Wing Cheung and managed by Vali Gremi, Aqua Eight is a fusion restaurant with dishes inspired by Vincent and Patrick’s home cooking growing up but also flavours taken from across China, Malaysian and Asia using fresh, locally sourced ingredients where possible. We were very excited to try the food here, having heard great things about it and aware the restaurant had won the ‘Best Restaurant’ award in recent years. Tucked away on the quiet Lion Street right in the centre of Ipswich town, Aqua Eight has a very exclusive feel to it. Upon entering we were greeted by a stunning chandelier and ambient lighting emitting a

54

contemporary blue glow. We were welcomed by the very gracious and professional manager Vali who showed us to our seats and provided us with drinks. The restaurant is able to accommodate seating for a range of party sizes with tables available from groups of two all the way up larger parties. The tables are all set and ready to go upon arrival. Due to the wide selection of dishes available we decided to let Vali select our dishes for us and I believe it was the best thing we could have done! Not only was it an exciting way of experiencing a range of dishes that we would not normally have chosen but it served

as a fantastic eye-opening experience. All of the dishes were colourful and aesthetically pleasing with clear attention to presentation. Our first course consisted of mixed hors d’oeuvres which included a selection of Prawn Toast topped with Seaweed, Capital Pork Chunks, Thai Satay Chicken Skewers, Chilli and Pepper Squid and Chicken Gyoza. The hor d’eouvres were a fantastic combination of flavours and a great way to try a variety of different dishes. The squid particularly stood out. It was lightly cooked with a really light batter on the outside and small shreds of chilli. The dumplings were light, crispy, fresh and zingy. Everything had a twist – the Prawn Toast had black sesames mixed in with the white,

and the Satay Chicken was tender with a sweet sauce with a hint of spice. We also had a plate of Chargrilled Sirloin Beef and Asparagus Rolls in Teriyaki, highly recommended by Vali. These were tender yet crunchy, a joyful fusion of Asian and traditional British flavours. We followed this with Honey Glazed Salt and Pepper Quail with Salad, a fantastic combination of crispy batter and succulent, flavoursome quail on a bed of crispy green salad leaves. Our next course consisted of Roasted Duck with Mango and Passionfruit Sauce, Chargrilled Wasabi Sirloin Steak with Soya and Lemongrass, Thai Fragrant Steamed Rice and Vegetable Noodles. The mango was ripe and

sweet and was an unusual yet delicious fusion with the sweet passionfruit sauce and the roast duck. The beef was cooked medium, was tender and the sauce was wonderfully sweet. The beef was pink in the middle but with no blood, cooked just to our liking. The rice was light and fluffy, with a wonderful light fragrant aroma and perfectly sticky, the fine noodles a wonderful accompaniment. Portion sizes were incredibly generous and between the two of us we struggled to finish every single dish (no matter how much we wanted to!). There was more than enough for two very hungry people. Just when we thought we couldn’t eat any more, Vali presented us with the Chef’s Dessert Selection, four miniature tasting portions consisting of

Passionfruit & Sago, Coconut Ice-cream, Banana in Filo with Chocolate Sauce and Raspberry pannacotta. We particularly loved the Raspberry dish. It was fresh and creamy with a generous layer of raspberry coulis. The tartness of the raspberry worked well with the creaminess of the pannacotta. Staff were very attentive without being overbearing and the experience was fantastic from start to finish. If you would like to visit Aqua Eight we would suggest booking in now. On our visit they were fully booked two weekends in advance. To find out more information about Aqua Eight visit www.aquaeight.com or to book a table call 01473 218994

T

he bluebell is undoubtedly the most loved wildflower in the country and rightly so. There is nothing better for the soul than a walk through woodland in early May with bluebells in full bloom, the leaf buds on the trees just bursting with lime green leaves and dappled sunlight breaking through the tree canopy. Bluebells can be found across much of Suffolk with the exception of the Brecks and parts of the mid-Suffolk claylands. The real strongholds however, are woodlands along the coast and south Suffolk where on lighter soils bluebells will grow in remarkable profusion. We might be tempted to take the bluebell for granted in Suffolk but outside of the UK the bluebell is not nearly as widespread. Our bluebell woods are the envy of Europe. As with most woodland plants the bluebell has to get its growing done early in the year. Bluebell leaves will start to poke through the ground in mid-February and by the end of March carpet the ground. The first flowers usually appear in early April but it is towards the end of April and into May that the spectacular mass flowering occurs. However, almost as quickly as it all happens it is over. By mid-summer the woodland floor is a shady place. The bluebell leaves have wilted and faded leaving little trace of what once was. Under the ground though, the bluebell bulbs will have stored energy and divided ready for an even grander display the following spring.

But while there is a lot of new woodland being planted it will not benefit the bluebell for many years as they are quite slow to colonise new woods. In the longer term the outlook for bluebells is a little more uncertain according to some views. It is suggested that global warming may affect the distribution of the species with predictions that the climate in southern England may become unsuitable for vernal species like the bluebell. However, at this stage it is impossible to determine exactly what the impact might be. Because the bluebell is so well adapted to life under a broadleaf tree canopy, a lack of management is no bad thing. However, in woods that are actively managed particularly by coppicing, the bluebell has to tolerate a bit of competition from time to time. After a few years when the coppice grows up the bluebell once again asserts its dominance as the species best adapted to life under the trees. Suffolk Wildlife Trust is the county’s largest voluntary organisation dedicated to local nature conservation. Supported by 26,000 members it is committed to creating Living Landscapes that are rich in wildlife where species can expand their range and move out of protected sites into the wider countryside through networks of linked up habitat. The Trust cares for over 3015 hectares of Suffolk’s most precious wildlife habitat in 53 nature reserves which are all free to visit. To find out more information visit www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org

© Clare Sheehan

In Suffolk the conservation status of the bluebell is relatively secure with the days of woodland clearance thankfully behind us. The picking of wildflowers is also no longer common practice but there have been cases where bluebell bulbs have been dug up in quantity. If buying bluebell bulbs make sure they’re from nursery grown stock and also they are not the rather gaudy Spanish bluebells.

Conifers that were widely planted in the 1950s and 60s are now being removed from some ancient woodland. This is creating opportunities for bluebells to reassert themselves after years in the evergreen shade of the conifer.

In Reykjavik itself you will find the fascinating Museum of Iceland, the striking modern architecture of the Hallgrimskirkja Church, an opera house as well as many excellent restaurants, bars and shops. Raw nature is what Iceland is all about. The adventure opportunities are

unparalleled – a day spent snowmobiling, trekking over glaciers or snorkelling between tectonic plates is just another day in Iceland. his seemed like something of a challenge for our first attempt. However, we were going to tackle it in easy chunks.

On arrival at Montreal we had to negotiate some queue-jumping in order to make our connection to Quebec City. The flight, in the noisiest 40-seater we have ever been in, was appropriately crewed by the loudest air hostess we have ever heard. Despite the noise of the aircraft she managed to address all the passengers without using the PA system. Awesome, as they say in that part of the world! Our flight did however provide our first glimpse of the stunning scenery with which we were about to get close up and personal. ‘The effort stopped all conversation but our lung-stretching efforts were rewarded with breath-taking views’ in a series of flights of steps as we climbed to one of the highest parts of the park. The effort stopped all conversation but our lungstretching efforts were rewarded with breathtaking views.

Returning to the visitor centre our guide produced a delicious picnic lunch, which we enjoyed in spectacular surroundings. Back in Quebec City, oozing with Gallic character and predominantly French speaking, we had time to explore the old town. It’s the only walled city in North America north of Mexico. Built on two levels connected by a funicular railway, were the lower level borders of the St Lawrence Seaway, a popular port of call for cruise ships. The upper level boasts the Hotel Chateau Frontenac, designed like an enormous French Chateau and claiming to be the most photographed hotel in the world. The adjoining boardwalk lead us to the Plains of Abraham where, in 1759, British and French troops battled it out under Generals Wolfe and Montcalm. This city is just made for walking with fresh sights around every corner.

The next day a short flight took us to Toronto, the fourth most populated city in North America and a huge contrast from historic Quebec. Originally named York, it changed its name to Toronto in 1834. Situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, towering new skyscrapers and numerous building sites are evidence of the rapid growth of the city.

© Copywright of Mike Pickup [Toronto from CN Tower, Toronto]

Toronto is the commercial hub of Canada, home to the Stock Exchange as well as the big five banks. This contributes to not only a high standard of living but also much highrise accommodation.

The tallest of Toronto’s structures is the CN Tower. At around 351m its viewing platform provided the perfect spot for an overall view of the city. If you’re brave enough you can also venture onto the vertigo-inducing glass floor, popular with those taking ‘selfies’. We also enjoyed lunch in the revolving restaurant where the spectacular views were matched by great food. However, it’s not all concrete and glass skyscrapers. The St Lawrence market, founded in 1803, is a large indoor market with stalls selling a wide range of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and bakery products. A few steps from the market found us facing another famous landmark, the ‘flat iron’ building, officially the Gooderham Building, which was completed in 1892.

largest waterfall. There are in fact three falls that flow into the Niagara River which forms a natural boundary between Canada and the US, but the Canadian falls – the Horseshoe Falls – are the biggest, cascading 2.2 million litres of water a second into the river below. Niagara is a small town, easily covered on foot. The Falls themselves are freely accessible although as we got closer we needed a rain jacket due to the permanent spray. Smart hotels line the road alongside the river and the Rainbow Bridge, so named because the spray often causes rainbows, links Niagara to Buffalo in the state of New York.

Toronto is also a major centre of culture, performing arts and learning – its University was founded in 1827 and is part of the city rather than at a remote campus. In Toronto, old and new are happy neighbours.

The area boasts numerous vineyards. Typical wine production includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Riesling. We also visited nearby picturesque townships such as Niagara on the Lake, Jordan and the Balls Falls Conservation Area. It is one of the earliest settlements in this part of Canada and includes the Grist Mill dating back to 1809 and St George Church, built in 1864.

Next stop Niagara, a 90 minute drive from Toronto and home to the world’s second

We came across so many memorable sights but one thing everywhere had in common was

the feeling of safety and the friendliness of the people, from shop assistants to staff at the smart city hotels. Wherever we went we were made to feel very welcome. DON’T MISS Quebec City Book a suite at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac with its antique furniture, decorative wood panelling, marble bathtubs, and enormous windows looking out across the St. Lawrence River. Take a day trip on The Train of Le Massif de Charlevoix. Admire the wonderful and otherwise inaccessible scenery and enjoy breakfast and a four-course dinner.

Toronto Have lunch in the revolving restaurant at the CN Tower. Book in advance. See a performance by the Canadian Opera Company or the National Ballet of Canada, both based in Toronto.

Niagara Take a deluxe Niagara Wine Tasting tour including lunch, two winery visits and tastings of the red, white and renowned ice wine. Don’t drive! See the Falls from above with Niagara Helicopters – a truly unforgettable experience.

EAUX LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE - SUFFOLK EDITION

EAUX takes a look at the latest supercharged supercar from Lotus

2

015 sees the launch of the Lotus Evora 400, the fastest ever roadgoing Lotus production with greater agility, the legendary benchmark handling and a maximum speed of 186mph and acceleration 0-60 in just 4.1 seconds. The Evora 400 features a mounted 3.5-litre V6 engine, which produces 400 horsepower and 410 Nm of torque. It has reduced CO2 exhaust emissions which means a lower tax band in many markets. The new Lotus Evora 400 will be manufactured at the Lotus Headquarters in Hethel, Norfolk. Jean-Marc Gales, Chief Executive Officer for Group Lotus plc, states, ‘A requirement for all Lotus cars is to be a benchmark for handling, to be the quickest car from A to B and to provide the driver with a pure and involving driving experience. The Evora 400 is the fastest road-going Lotus that we have ever produced, possessing performance that can only be matched by cars costing significantly more. It delivers supercar looks allied to supercar performance.’ The increased speed is down to small tweaks in design and attention to detail which have been made throughout the car to decrease the weight by 22kg. ‘We have always said that to make a car better, you must make it faster and lighter,’ continues Jean-Marc. ‘We have achieved this, of course, but we didn’t stop there, as the considerable number of changes in the interior, chassis, engine and body design have warranted emphatically, the title of a new Lotus Evora.’ The Evora 400 features a new and improved interior. The front seats provide greater support for driver and passenger. As a handcrafted sports car, the bespoke feel is carried across three new trim levels, including trim upgrades in full Alcantara, or Scottish leather, with each featuring specific trim detailing. Apart from the materials used, the new door casings, centre console and more space in the rear support a determined approach to improve both accessibility into and egress from the car’s cabin. Both comfort and ergonomics have been improved dramatically with a new HVAC system that provides greater airflow and operator control, within an all-new dashboard layout. A high-end in-car entertainment system is standard, with the latest, lightweight and slim-line door speakers being fitted within the new door casings, while A-pillar incorporated tweeters improve the sound reproduction quality. All in all, the Evora 400 is a beautiful thing to behold.

Roger Wosahlo

Shifting Gears C

Car Glass and Trim remembers its founder ar Glass and Trim was founded in 1983 by Roger Wosahlo and has held the same premises in Ipswich since its beginnings.

Roger himself retired from Car Glass and Trim in 2013 and the business was taken over by employees Kevin Tozer and Simon Lockwood who between them have 66 years of experience in the industry, most of them from working at Car Glass and Trim. The company’s large and loyal customer base played a big part in the decision to take over the business. Unfortunately Roger recently lost his battle with cancer. Although Roger has now passed away he has handed down the values that were so important to him: ‘He believed very much that if you look after your clients the business will always be there and here we are 32 years on,’ says Kevin. The team at Car Glass and Trim will always have respect for Roger, his attitude and his ability to always get things done. Quality and

honesty have always been the core values of the business and still hold strong to this day. ‘We do glass for anything that’s on the road,’ says Kevin. Specialising in glass and trim for cars, vans, trucks, buses and coaches, Car Glass and Trim also offer side panel glass, bodyshop work and custom glass cutting for classic cars. The team are able to re-trim headlinings and vinyl roofs, investigate water leaks in glazing and seals and also carry out van conversion work, which is becoming increasingly popular. The two onsite workshops are supported by a fleet of vans for mobile and in-house work, too. For the team at Car Glass and Trim, no issue is an issue – unless they run out of teabags! From our brief visit to the site we could instantly see how much care and attention the team has for clients and for the business itself, which is one of the primary reasons why they retain customers - and their customer base is still continually growing. ‘Clients return to us time and time again because they realise

we get the job done properly,’ explains Kevin, ‘you’ll see the same happy faces as you did twenty years ago.’ Although the premises haven’t changed much in the last 30 years, the business has had to adapt to changes within the industry. Whilst windscreens were once held in with rubber seals, advancements in safety and technology mean that they are now bonded to form part of the structural integrity of the vehicle. There was once a time when sunroofs made up a large part of the work at Car Glass and Trim, but with the inclusion of air conditioning becoming standard in many cars, this is no longer the case. Simon and Kevin have seen much more call for van conversions and believe that this is where the future of the business lies. To arrange an appointment, you can visit Car Glass and Trim on West End Road, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 2DZ, call 01473 214611 or email info@carglassandtrim.com

V

olvo has really stepped up the game with the XC60. Known predominantly for their wellestablished ‘safest car on the road’ slogan, Volvo has brought so much more to the table with this model. Their core values of quality, safety and environmental care are clear to see with the latest XC60 model. We had high expectations of the XC60 as we drove across Ipswich to Donalds Volvo. The dealership features the full range of Volvo models plus a comprehensive onsite aftersales department. We arrived at the showroom and were shown around the vehicle by Dan the Volvo Brand Manager who pointed out the main features of the model. We took the XC60 R-Design Lux D4 FWD 8-Speed Geartronic Automatic for a spin through the Suffolk countryside, towns and the dual carriageways and by the time we stepped out of the car back at Donalds Volvo in Ipswich we were raving about it! The XC60 was designed as a solution for drivers wanting a combination of city car and countryside comfort. The design is very different than other SUVs with a low roof, purposeful look and beautiful horizontal lines. This SUV is simple and surprisingly elegant in its design. Small touches like the extra set of washers that sit out of sight make the XC60 a joy. Exterior details include 18inch Ixion alloy wheels rain sensor, rear park assist and active bending xenon headlights and headlight cleaning system. The interior is kept simple but is obviously well thought-out with an air of luxury. Plush soft leather seats with sports stitching hug you as you relax, holding you comfortably in place throughout your drive. Unlike other cars which tend to have light coloured fabric on the inside of the roof, the dark fabric in the XC60 and low roof really adds to the experience, making you feel enclosed and completely immersed in the car. The heated leather steering wheel feels solid under the hands. It really is luxury all

86

the way. Little touches like the frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror really adds to the immersive experience. The main central panel and high-resolution colour display are angled slightly towards the driver for more comfortable positioning. This makes controls more intuitive, easier to read and less awkward for the driver’s wrist. Housed in the central panel is the Sensus system for all your entertainment and infotainment needs at the flick of a few buttons. The XC60 has enviable boot space – more than enough for everything plus the kitchen sink. The door has automatic opening and closing at the push of a button. The XC60 has a 2.0 litre turbodiesel D4 engine and the all-new 8-speed gearbox which Volvo will be rolling out for all of their new cars for smooth, seamless driving. Together, the engine and gearbox delivers better efficiency than ever before.

The XC60 feels intuitive and positively effortless to drive. The engine is powerful and the car sturdy yet responsive and light to the touch, allowing you to feel completely in control. You can barely feel the gear changes between one and three and above that it’s completely unnoticeable, providing an incredibly smooth drive. The stop/start feature is very quick to react and road noise is minimal. The low roof really helps the car feel like it’s sticking to the road as you corner as opposed to taller SUVs that have much more lean. It’s the feel of the Volvo XC60 that really makes it extra special. The well thought out design and spacious interior makes the XC60 a wonderful family car, which would be great both in town and out on the country roads. The 8-speed gearbox is a delight, contributing to a really refined driving experience. The XC60 is a great luxury all-rounder and a joy to drive.

T

he brand Aston Martin is synonymous with both British luxury and James Bond. The third ever James Bond film in 1964 featured the iconic Aston Martin DB5 and the Aston Martin brand has popped up throughout 50 years of OO7 time and time again. It is now confirmed that James Bond will once again drive an Aston Martin in Spectre, which is due for release on 6 November 2015. The DB10 model is being developed specifically for the film and is being built in-house by the brand’s design and engineering teams.

Aston Martin together with EON Productions, the producers of the James Bond film franchise, unveiled Bond’s stunning new car recently on the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. Led by Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, the design team worked closely with the film’s director, Sam Mendes, to create the ultimate car for the world’s most famous spy. Dr Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin, said: ‘In the same year that we celebrate our 50-year relationship with 007, it seems doubly

fitting that today we unveiled this wonderful new sports car created especially for James Bond. ‘To be partnering once again with EON Productions is great news for this company and for everyone around the world that loves to see Bond at the wheel of an Aston Martin. ‘I’m incredibly proud of everyone in the team at Gaydon who have brought this special project from concept to reality.’ Production will be strictly limited to 10 of the bespoke sports cars, developed and built by the designers, engineers and highly skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters.

Marqués de Riscal

ocated in Spain, The Hotel Marqués de Riscal is nestled in one of the oldest and most prestigious bodegas of the Rioja wine region. Designed by the architect Frank O. Gehry, one of the world’s most renowned architects, Hotel Marqués de Riscal boasts beautiful curvature, a titanium roof and asymmetrical walls which offer an elegant contrast to the historic wine cellars below which were designed in 1858 by architect Ricardo Bellsola. The hotel merges deep-rooted wine-growing tradition with twenty-first century avant-garde design. The Hotel Marqués de Riscal has 43 exquisite bedrooms (including ten suites), each of which are unique. The leather and raw maple wood of the suites, the dark marble of the bathrooms and furniture by Gehry (such as the Cloud lamps) and other famous architects like Alvar Aalto melt harmoniously with the most advanced technology. All rooms include state of the art Bang & Olufsen LCD TVs, IP Cisco Phones and marble bathrooms to create a wonderful juxtaposition of modern amenities combined with views of the vineyards and the medieval town of Elciego.

The Michelin starred Marqués de Riscal Restaurant offers innovative cuisine while Bistrò 1860 combines the rich tradition of Basque – Riojan cuisine – with contemporary creations. Wines from the estate are joined by other masterpieces of international enology in the Wine Bar, while the Rooftop Lounge Library invites you to enjoy a drink by the fire.

The spa facilities include heated swimming pool, steam room, barrel bath, jacuzzi, invigorating shower and a fitness centre along with 14 rooms for beauty treatments. If a daily dose of iron is your thing you’ll be pleased to know there are two golf courses within 35km of the hotel.

EAUX talks to Samuel Shutlar of Samuel David Construction to find out why the business has become so popular

S

amuel David Shutlar, the brains behind Samuel David Construction is young and always well presented – perhaps, dare we say it, not what you’d initially picture when you imagine a construction company or tradesman. Although still young, Samuel has already clocked up an impressive ten years in the construction industry, having worked on a wide variety of jobs and has gained much experience. Sam’s passion is exceeding expectations, completing projects to the highest of standards and taking the pressure off the client, making sure there is as little as possible disruption to his clients’ day to day life. Based near Woodbridge, Samuel has support in the form of his handpicked team of craftsmen and tradesmen who have the same high standards and are equally as passionate about customer service and take pride in what they do.

whether you get Samuel himself working on your project or one of his team. It is the attention to detail that has really allowed Samuel’s reputation for quality and care to grow over the past few years. Sam says: ‘We genuinely do bend over backwards to ensure that our clients get the outcome they want. We like to work with people who want the best for their homes and are willing to invest in the best possible materials to do so. Our advice is free but the old adage that you get what you pay for is totally true when it comes to the core products. When you work with quality components you will always get a better result than trying to cut corners.

Samuel is increasingly finding that more of his clients are requesting small scale landscaping and maintenance work. With a finger on the pulse and keen to develop his business, Sam has invested in implementing a specialist team to serve these requirements and has bought shares in established local business Homeforce which offers qualified local tradesmen who specialise in areas like landscaping. This allows Samuel to offer clients a fuller service and more experience and specialist knowledge in these areas, allowing Samuel David Construction to truly be able to tackle any job head on with the right specialist knowledge.

Once I have decided with my customers the best materials for a job I will then check them before purchase. Quality can vary and I am very fussy!’

‘Once I have decided with my customers the best materials for a job I will then check them before purchase. Quality can vary and I am very fussy!’

Many of Sam’s customers return to him once their initial work has been completed due to the high standards. One client from Ipswich area says: ‘They installed a new window in our lounge and we were so pleased with it, we asked them back to install another in one of the bedrooms! All work was carried out in the timescale stated and with good humour throughout. Nothing was too much trouble and all at a competitive cost.’

To talk to Samuel and his team about your property call now on 01394 766837 or visit www.samueldavidconstruction.co.uk for more information.

Offering a wide range of bespoke building services, Samuel David Construction cover all aspects of construction from planning to project management through to signing off for any project whether large or small. They specialise in conversions, renovations and restorations and also offer designer kitchens and bathrooms, doors, brickwork, garages and extensions, new builds, painting and flooring. Samuel has noticed a large increase in clients requesting ‘restyles’ of rooms and areas of their homes they perhaps do not like any more. This often includes making rooms lighter by installing bi-fold doors through to other rooms and even outside, leading onto patio areas and incorporating outside living spaces. Samuel or a member of his team will visit your home to discuss your requirements at no charge but what really sets Samuel David Construction apart is the passion for total customer satisfaction across the board

large, grand house with a rich history set in acres of land on the Essex/Suffolk border – sounds like every person’s dream home. The house itself was built in 1867 by local seed merchant William Dunnet. There is rumoured to be a strong link between him and Darwin; there is a distinct botanical focus with outbuildings called Cucumber House, Peach House and the Vinery. It is also rumoured that Constable once painted in the house. Owner Ben had never worked with an interior designer before; it was only when Julia was recommended to him that he considered bringing her on board and speaking to him today, he’s certain he made the right decision. Before Ben and his partner Lauren bought the house on the Essex/Suffolk border, they were based in London. Although they enjoyed decorating their home there, with such a large, long-term project, both realised it could be incredibly costly to make mistakes. The renovation was being managed from London remotely with Ben and Lauren visiting on the weekends, which just highlighted how important it was to have a central force on site, planning and organising. So on New Year’s Day 2013, Julia got her first glimpse of the house.

THE RIGHT FIT

‘Ben wanted the house restored sympathetically, incorporating nods to the original creators of the estate,’ explained Julia. One of the main requirements was to

© Nelson Design UK

When Julia came on board the house was a blank canvas. Julia spent time soaking up the house, reading up about the history, getting to know Ben and Lauren and understanding what they wanted to achieve. get away from the dark emptiness of the large property and give it the feel of a Victorian gentleman’s residence. It was important that the house had a warm, cosy

feel as it was so large. One of the main themes that runs throughout is that of natural history which links up nicely with both the origins of the house and Ben’s hobbies. The natural history theme encompasses a variety of elements: exploration, botanicals, florals and insects which allowed Julia to give each room a different feel but link them in the subconscious. ‘One of the bonuses we found with Julia is that she has a background in history,’ explained Ben. This meant that Julia knew what the rooms would have originally been used for.

THE NUTS AND BOLTS Whether a big or small project, an interior designer can really help transform ideas into reality. ‘It’s all very well saying “I like this and that but actually putting that all together into something that works is a very great skill to have,”’ said Ben. ‘Julia knew where to go to source the furniture, wallpapers and get furniture designed and made, whereas we wouldn’t even know where to begin.’

property Trust between Ben and Julia was up the upmost importance but for Ben, the most valuable thing was ‘homework’ which involved sending Julia photos of elements of homes he liked and information about his hobbies. Julia explained: ‘It’s my job to take the ideas, narrow them down and make the right choices for each individual property based on the client’s requirements.’ Once Julia narrowed down Ben’s ideas, she brought samples of fabrics and wallpapers to the house for consideration. Julia’s husband James was also involved with the project and often gets brought into in the logistical side of projects. It was particularity important to have someone with such a methodical and precise way of thinking and practical skills like this on such a big project. James was able to point out practical solutions to things that wouldn’t have even been considered, for example, which way the doors open or how a window fastens. He was able to take these problems in hand and offer solutions, keeping one step ahead and also ensuring the project stayed cost effective. ‘We now have a beautiful home with rooms well beyond our expectations,’ said Ben. ‘The dining room is so opulent people walk in and their jaws literally drop. There are surprises at every corner and it’s fantastic.’ Finding the right interior designer for you can add so much value, saving you from making mistakes, pushing your boundaries and making sure you get what you want first time around. Ben said: ‘I am now an advocate for interior designers and now the house is finished Julia is working with us on another project in London, too.’

Owning a listed building

Is the chocolate box cottage dream a privilege or a responsibility?

H

ave you ever driven past a chocolate box cottage or a sprawling historic house and dreamt about owning such a beautiful building? Perhaps you already own your own piece of heritage through one of these properties. While these homes are filled with character and charm, owners of listed buildings are subject to some of the most bizarre and restrictive regulations in existence. The laws and regulations that limit what you can change about a listed property, some of which date back hundreds of years, may surprise you in their ridiculousness. Here is just a small selection of the extraordinary problems listed buildings owners experience: If you live in the boundaries of a church, you may be liable to pay for repairs to the church as well as your home under chancel repairs laws dating back to Henry VIII. A thatched roof will need to be replaced

every few years. Be careful it isn’t made too tall or with the wrong material – you may have to take it down! Double glazing is almost always not allowed in listed properties. You need permission from the local authority to make any changes – even if you want to put a satellite dish up. Owning a listed building is up to 50% more expensive than a non-listed building yet 50% of listed property owners are in lower socio-economic groups D-E. The bizarre rules for listed building owners are all too familiar to The Listed Property Owners’ Club. Started over twenty years ago by Peter Anslow, who bought a 17th Century Kentish barn in the 1960s, LPOC is now the UK’s only advice service dedicated to helping listed property owners. The number of restrictions can be a little daunting. However Peter’s passion for helping other owners means LPOC know it can also be a joy and privilege to own a listed building; so he created LPOC and The Listed Property Show, which take place annually in London’s Olympia and HIC Harrogate. The club has also recently begun a progressive campaign for listed building owners. LPOC are lobbying parliament for a reduction in VAT on approved alterations to 5%, arguing for the processes to make changes to a listed property to become more streamlined, and to begin an All Party Political Group for better representation in Westminster.

For details and membership information, visit www.lpoc.co.uk/property-show or call 01795 844939.

ith the advent of spring comes the idea of spring cleaning in homes and premises, the removal of those tired objects that you have been meaning to replace. This might mean the replenishing of walls with new paint or paintings, something to brighten and rejuvenate. Your first step could be to venture into the mysterious world of seeking works of art, paintings, prints or sculpture, it can be as simple as visiting a local reputable art gallery. There is a popular misconception that one has to be fully conversant in the subject of art in order to enter a gallery, and some people believe that their knowledge (or lack of) will be tested the moment they step foot through the door. But collecting and purchasing an original work of art can be a very rewarding adventure for all, there is not a particular type of buyer, clients and customers come from all different backgrounds, art can present itself in many forms, such as original limited edition prints of etchings, drypoints, linocuts and screenprints all produced by the artists skilled hand, without the input of any computer wizardry, these are inexpensive and are all signed by the artist, do make sure these are not signed reproductions of eight hundred and fifty as available in high street picture shops. If you have an interest in, or perhaps an inquisitive and receptive mind, then that’s all you would need to view any visual art. Some will choose a piece because of it’s colour, some will be taken by it’s shape or the curriculum vitae of the artist or it might be the price, but if you are arrested by the imagery that is in front of you then it’s doing it’s job of pleasing you the viewer, so hopefully it would

have longevity in your home or place of work. We have in East Anglia a long tradition of art and artists living and working in this area, starting with the likes of Constable, Gainsborough. This long standing tradition of well known artists continues to-day all over the region with contemporary works of art that are affordable now, but if chosen carefully will always be a good investment and appreciate in value. We have at The John Russell Gallery a reputation of representing the very best of contemporary art that is available in our neighbouring counties of Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. All our artists have what we term as a ‘thumbprint’, a recognizable style, such as Constance Stubbs A.R.C.A, John Brunsdon R.C.A, Michael Carlo R.C.A, Charles Bartlett P.P.R.W.S, R.E, A.R.C.A, Richard Bawden R.C.A, Sarah Cannell, Barry Andrews, Naomi Munuo, Gill Mutch to name but a few. The framing and presentation of paintings and prints is important, so within the gallery we stock in excess of 300 different mouldings and mount boards for all media, watercolours need to have glass and mounts to protect them, where as oils and acrylics can be varnished, all our bespoke framing is executed at the gallery. The John Russell Gallery is the longest established contemporary art gallery in East Anglia, having been situated on Ipswich waterfront for 35 years, specialising in the works of contemporary East Anglian painters and sculptors. Throughout the year the gallery has regular monthly exhibitions showing its portfolio of gallery artists. We have the pleasure of assisting and providing expertise and guidance to various individuals and institutions in the framing, restoration, valuation and consultancy of works of art.

Colour

of the Year

Petra Vitler of Suffolk Interior Design talks about this year’s colour – Marsala

112

EAUX LUXURY LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE - SUFFOLK EDITION

O

ne colour set to hit the mark this the year is Marsala 18-1438 – Pantone’s colour of 2015. It’s a beautiful rich, earthy red and although it may not be picked up as the main colour in many collections there will be hints of it everywhere – not just in interiors but across the board in fashion, accessories and other lines, too. Marsala will be popular for longer than some previous colours as it’s very easy to live with and almost overlooked as a fashion statement which can limit expensive mistakes and create a very on trend yet understated look.

This full-bodied yet subdued hue really adds depth to a space and will look great as an accent colour with a wide range of different styles of interiors and will work well in any room whether a bedroom, kitchen or living space. It will go really well with apple green, blue, lilac grey, mustards and many shades from the neutral spectrum. Marsala looks great on heavy textures and would make a gorgeous leather sofa, sumptuous velvet accessory or luxurious fur throw. It is, however, a colour that in certain textures and fabrics does need something to liven it up like complementary colours. The new Dimensions collection from Clarke and Clarke has some fantastic designs featuring luscious velvets and detailed textures in Marsala with hints of metallics (pictured). When considering accessories to complement Marsala, one of the key things I would recommend is opting for warm metal colours as they go really well and there has been a growing trend recently with gold rushing back into our homes; out with the chrome, in with

warmer metals in shiny and antique finishes. If you would like advice on incorporating Marsala (or any other colour) into your home, we are happy to offer advice at Suffolk Interior Design (www.suffolkinteriordesign.co.uk). We’ve been trading for more than 12 years and have stayed quite small in order to allow us to continually to offer outstanding service to our clients. The business was one the first interior designer/soft furnishing makers to become a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. Our studio in Rendlesham is packed with pattern books from leading fashion houses, mirrors, cushions and accessories so it’s ideal if you’re looking for inspiration. Not based in Suffolk? Not a problem – our client base stretches from Cornwall to the Isle of Mull and across Europe. Whether you’re looking for a single cushion or have a room or home you’d like decorated from start to finish, we can help. We create curtains, blinds, throws, valances, loose covers and cushions in house and for large projects we can use our team of trusted professionals (plumbers, electricians, etc). We don’t do ordinary but we do cater for every type of home and theme requested and ensure that the homes we leave are as beautiful as they are suitable for the clients that live there. A personal service is one attribute that The Burgess Group delivers with ease. Each and everyone of their staff cares passionately about providing customers with a level of service second to none. The company ethos is to exceed customer expectations. The Burgess Group has achieved a British Standard Kitemark for the survey and installation of windows and doors; an independent endorsement the company is unashamedly proud of.

Crafted

Eaux asked founder of The Burgess Group, Edward Burgess, how his company stands out from their competition: ‘We work a little bit differently to typical ‘double glazers’ (who tend to like to spend hours on your sofa). Instead we invite you to come sit on ours at one of our three local showrooms. Our aim is to help customers make an informed decision on which product is right for their home and budget, without any fuss or hassle and then we leave them to think things through. We specialise in installing products that are well-made and designed with care to ensure that they enhance a building’s architectural integrity. We hate nothing more than ugly, ill-chosen windows and doors! Our products are made from timber and a range of carefully selected maintenance-free alternatives, whilst all attain the highest levels of thermal performance, security and longevity and reliability in use.’

‘We promise attentive service, best workmanship, finest materials and a perfect fit.’

On visiting their Woodbridge showroom, I was inspired by the exciting product range on offer and soon understood why so many home owners would chose The Burgess Group to replace windows and doors in their homes. See examples of the company’s work on their website www.burgess-group.com

Clearer Picture V Find out how CGIs can benefit those looking to build or refurbish 118

ictoria Guthrie met with Jamie Christensen and Ricky Brownlee of Christensen Brownlee Design to find out how computer generated images are becoming more popular for those wanting to build new homes. Christensen Brownlee Design provide architectural design and surveying services. Jamie points out the importance of CGIs and how they have become essential for all aspects of architecture and design, ‘but particularly for developers looking to advertise their projects before they have actually been built.’

Christensen Brownlee Design provide a full architectural service for clients who come to them at the very first stage. They visit the property or site and discuss with their client what they would like designed and their requirements. 2D CAD designs will then be drawn up as standard, along with CGIs to help convey ideas clearly and photo-realistically. ‘In the case of developers or clients who we have not done the initial designs for, it is often the case that we get asked to create CGIs for the planning process to help planners understand the proposals easier, or once

planning has been approved and they are looking to advertise their property to the sales market. The photo-realistic CGIs that we produce can be used throughout the whole design process.’ CGI renderings are a great tool for overcoming some of the challenges clients can face when trying to explain their vision to an architect or builder. ‘Generally, our clients leave the vision

for the designs to us, as we are experienced building designers as well and 3D visualisers,’ explains Jamie. ‘This means our clients can supply us with minimal info, usually CAD drawings and materials lists, and then leave the rest to us. Sometimes clients will have a specific idea of how they want their images to look, and supply us with photographs to use for reference which is very helpful.’

Ricky explains that the duo supply CGIs as standard for all of their designs. ‘This way, if they can’t initially understand or read the drawings we provide, as often people struggle to comprehend the space that will be achieved, we produce CGIs to give them an easy way to understand representation of the proposed designs.’ Ricky goes on to explain about a client who had contacted Christensen

property Brownlee Design to help him communicate his property design ideas with his French builder in Nice, as there was a tricky language barrier. ‘Our client could discuss the ideas he wanted with us so we could produce the images, and then he could also use the images to easily and clearly explain to his builders, without the use of language. This is a project that has been going on now for around six months, and every now and then we will create another image for the client when he needs to convey an idea to his builders.’

We were curious how the duo go about getting clients’ ideas down accurately into CGI form. ‘We have recently worked on a client’s new-build house that he wanted us to design the spaces for, internally and externally,’ explains Jamie. The client had seen previous work on Facebook and the Christensen Brownlee Design website (www. cbdesignuk.com) and liked the duo’s design work. ‘More often now we are doing not only the external designs but also the internal spaces as well. The client initially sent us a set of CAD drawings and a list of the CGIs he wanted us to create and, using this, we sent him a quote through for the work. Once this formality was completed we asked him to have a look online for design ideas that he liked so that we could get an idea of his styles and tastes.’ Jamie and Ricky then used these ideas to form CGIs of each of the rooms that he wanted. ‘Sometimes there are amendments that the clients require, such as colour changes or material changes, perhaps for kitchen unit colours, which we do free of charge. However, on this occasion, we hit the nail on the head first time, which was great!’ There are huge benefits to using CGI renderings for not only private clients but also businesses perhaps looking to build their own offices, and property developers looking to propose projects. Jamie and Ricky advise that for businesses like developers, having CGIs produced at an early stage, before the building has even begun, is vital. ‘Often it can mean some redesigning as sometimes they will spot something that they haven’t noticed before on the 2D plans. Mainly, though, these images are used to advertise the project on property websites and signboards on the site. This allows potential clients to see what the proposed building will look like when finished, both inside and out.’

Lucy Hargreaves, director of Spiral Cellars looks at their rise in popularity

W

hile wine cellars used to be thought of as dark, dusty and damp places beneath a property, they are now taking the limelight and typically in the main open plan living space. Spiral Cellars, with natural conditions, ample space and a range of design options, are created to not only store wine but display and experience it, using aesthetic materials and considered design to craft lavish, and enviable cellars that also happen to keep the all-important commodity of wine in the ideal conditions.

With the typical British home short on valuable space, sometimes the only way to go is down. Adding a Spiral Cellar, created in the untapped earth beneath a house, is a small undertaking compared to a full basement, with installation taking no more than nine days. The range of doors can be walked over and, if opting for a half rather than full door, the sealed top half of the cellar can even be positioned beneath furniture or cabinetry to make the most of your space.

The British kitchen is no exception when it comes to space. It can be difficult to stow food and kitchen items out of sight in the largest kitchens so having a unique alternative to a pantry or larder cupboard built into the untapped space beneath can be a great bonus! Spiral Cellars offer great storage for wine but also food, with conditions suitable for tins, preserves and packets, along with eggs and some dairy. Crockery, glassware and small appliances can also be stashed away if the space for wine can be spared! For more information visit www.spiralcellars.com

Ten Years in Business Riverdale Estates celebrates its 10th successful year letting and selling properties in and around Ipswich

R

iverdale Estates markets, sells and lets quality properties in and around the Ipswich area, offering a wide selection ranging from modern studio pads and penthouse suites to country cottages and executive homes. The talented Riverdale team manages hundreds of homes from their office on the beautiful Ipswich Waterfront and has earned an excellent reputation for hard work, passion and getting results. The Riverdale team have more than 60 years of combined experience and pride themselves on their extensive local knowledge and award-winning customer service. For Riverdale Estates, 2014 has proved to be the company’s most successful year yet. ‘The team has achieved a record year for both selling and letting in what has been an incredibly buoyant lettings and sales market,’ says director Kate Fell. ‘2014 has seen the sales market on the waterfront really pick up with prices back up to pre-recession levels and a high demand from investors and owner occupiers.’ Kate comments that they have also seen rent steadily rising and have been able to secure longer tenancies for their clients. This is a brand that really understands the visual aspects of selling and letting properties.

More often than not, the decision a buyer makes on whether to view a house is dictated by the way the house is presented in visual terms. Riverdale Estates uses both in-house and professional sales particulars, utilising the medium of digital photography to include internal photographs and floor plans, thus enhancing the level of visual material available to the buyer.

Riverdale Estates is privately owned, which means that it can react quickly to market changes and focus on providing clients with the best possible rates according to the current economic climate. The company pride themselves on their professional and personal approach and, unlike most estate agents who focus solely on expensive and elaborate marketing campaigns to advertise their services, many clients come to them through recommendation. ‘We believe our success is largely down to the quality of our staff and superior service they provide,’ says Kate. Over its 10 years of established service, the business has compiled an extensive list of satisfied clients. One testimonial states, ‘I have complete confidence in the staff at Riverdale. They are extremely professional and manage my property efficiently – I have no hassle!’ whilst another maintains that the team give ‘first class service all the time’. To celebrate their success and to keep up with demand Riverdale Estates are offering reduced selling fees for a limited time only. If you put your property on the market with Riverdale Estates between now and Easter they we offer their full selling service for just 0.7% + VAT. Call 01473 217600 now for a free market appraisal.
