welcome PUBLISHER Myles Davies
Attending events and shows have always been exciting occasions in the publishing industry, with lots of wine and hors d’oeuvres and shoulder-rubbing with the pros, but since starting at PT Magazine, I’ve learned that the fitness industry does everything one better. Not only do the events still have wine and nibbles and stimulating discussions (even if you do feel a little more guilty about the wine), they also casually throw in the odd optional 1-hour workout or 10k run, or, like the Fitness Writers’ Association, they make you work for your refreshments by providing an exercise bike with an attached blender, so you can really feel like you earned that smoothie.

Injury
Coping Mechanisms
By Richard Callender
As a person who tries to live life the right way with a balanced approach to training, lifestyle and nutrition, I considered myself at times indestructible as I watched friends and colleagues suffer from a myriad of injuries and conditions that left me ‘touching wood’ that I would be delivered. Unfortunately my ticket was called and I became the proud new recipient of a slipped disc, a secondary disc bulge and a severely compressed L3 nerve. Most people have had to deal with injuries at some point in their career. However what often separates fitness professionals from the general populace is the way in which we will deal with unfortunate setbacks. Although the injured professional may not be actively working during this period on the sidelines, they can still work on developing their business. Here are my top tips:
GOAL SETTING This is the cornerstone of the health and fitness industry and the pathway to which dreams are made a reality. Without direction or something tangible to work towards you may end up relying on luck or
chance to decide what happens to you and this will result in feelings of helplessness. During time off you need to use this incredibly vital tool to focus beyond where you are currently and plan on making progress.
“SHIN SPLINTS, STRAINS, SPRAINS OR A SHORT WORK ABSENCE ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO SOME THINGS LIFE COULD HAVE THROWN AT YOU” MAINTAIN PERSPECTIVE Contrary to popular belief, an injury is not the end of the world. In most cases it can be a great opportunity for change. For some fitness professionals, missing even one workout or day at work can be traumatising, but it is important to keep your perspective. Shin splints, strains, sprains or a short work absence are nothing compared to some things life could have thrown at you that are much more significant than not being able to train or work temporarily.
DO YOUR REHAB EXERCISES AND/OR DO AS YOU ARE TOLD Perform the exercises as prescribed by your practitioner or take the advice given by your medical practitioner. We fitness professionals, can be a stubborn breed as we are used to giving advice and not taking it. But listen to the professionals in their field as any issued “homework” may be the key to a faster recovery and preventing a recurrence of the same injury.
FOCUS ON WHAT CAN BE DONE AND NOT WHAT CAN’T It is really easy to get hung up on everything you cannot do when injured. The better route is to focus on everything you can do, and then do those activities. For example, if an injury prevents you from running, you still may be able to bike and swim. If you have an upper body injury then focus on your lower and vice versa while maintaining a balanced approach to your training.
RE-EVALUATE YOURSELF AND HOW YOU FUNCTION While you have time off you should look at how effective you are as a business and a brand. Redesign your website, write blogs and look at your marketing campaigns. Remember you are still in control.

KETTLEBELLS
Importance of Proper Instructor Training Kettlebells are a fantastic training tool for the PT – they’re portable, relatively inexpensive, can be used to perform a variety of different exercises and are effective at helping a client achieve a number of different goals. For these reasons the majority of PTs incorporate kettlebell training into their repertoire at some point. In order to realise the many benefits, the movements have to be performed with proper technique. Executed correctly, kettlebell exercises are highly technical and are not the sort of thing you can pick up from pictures or watching video clips. Sure, you might learn 85% of the technique but the missing 15% is crucial in helping your client get the most from the exercise and stay injury-free. This is something I learned firsthand. It’s only in the last few years that I’ve included kettlebells as part of my training, prior to this I hadn’t been sold on the benefits; all you’re doing is swinging a weight after all. A chance encounter with another PT, who also happened to be the most wellrespected kettlebell coach and instructor in a 100-mile radius, quickly changed my perspective.
He showed me the finer, subtle elements to mastering the technique and just how versatile the kettlebell is. I enrolled in a kettlebell instructor course shortly afterwards and have been incorporating kettlebell training into my programming ever since. By assuming I didn’t need any specialist training to use this kit I was missing out on the many benefits it offered. I was definitely proved wrong and it taught me a valuable lesson; to get the most from something,
“BY ASSUMING I DIDN’T NEED ANY SPECIALIST TRAINING TO USE THIS KIT I WAS MISSING OUT ON THE MANY BENEFITS IT OFFERED” you need to learn from the best, continually practice and never think you know all there is to know. It’s something I see every time I visit another gym – kettlebells being used incorrectly because the instructor hasn’t received the appropriate training. Whereas
by Kristoph Thompson
I was just ignorant to the benefits of kettlebells and therefore not programming with them, others are including them in their clients’ routines, creating a potentially risky situation from an insurance standpoint. If a client were to become injured during a training session they have the right to bring a claim against the PT if they can prove any negligence on the part of the trainer. The fact that the PT was using kettlebells without having a recognised instructor qualification puts them on shaky ground from the start. Surely that piece of mind alone justifies the cost of the course. An instructor course is also a much more time efficient means of learning. It can take months of trawling the internet and magazines to glean the same amount of information that can be had from spending a few hours with a tutor. A one-day course costs around £150 and is offered by the majority of training providers. This will give you a sound grounding in the basics of kettlebell instruction, with additional training available should you wish to take your development even further. The Physical Company (www.physicalcompany.co.uk) offer their own REPS approved courses.

TALES OF A TRAVELLER
by Greg Sellar
It’s one of the benefits of my job in working with different companies that I get to travel with work. As a trainer, if you can align yourself with companies who want to spread their message beyond the UK borders, then it’s a great way to make a living. Meeting new people and networking wherever you go provides untold amount of further opportunities. Here’s just a brief glimpse into my last month.
Three BOSU programmes delivered, and my own ‘Turbo Tabata’ session all over three days. Some of the ideas and concepts we were presenting were vaguely familiar to them, yet they were hungry for new information. Bangkok and the ‘emerging markets’ were next on the list. After 15 years of presenting, Asia was the one place I’d never presented. I delivered five programmes for fitness fx at Asia Fitness Convention and the sessions went well. If you get to these conventions and are willing to talk to people, all sorts of opportunities arise. There’s more work lined up for next year and new opportunities in the Philippines and Japan.
Stop number one was LA for the new 3D XTREME (powered by BOSU) filming. A highly-pressurised and long day filming what is to become the instructor DVD for this great new programme. Having the likes of Jay Blahnik mentoring you through the process and being on-set to guide and direct was a phenomenal learning experience and one that I’ve carried with me ever since. Keep your eyes peeled for the class in Q2 of 2014.
Onwards to China for a tough weeklong training for distributors of fitness fx and Total Gym (GRAVITY) out there. The Chinese instructors love their danceinspired workouts, so going in under the ‘training’ banner was a push uphill. In these newer markets they are waiting for their ‘superstars’ to guide and shape them. If anyone can speak Chinese and is willing to spend some time out there, a billion people with almost no market penetration into fitness might be an attractive prospect.
From there, it was straight down to Sydney and then onto Perth for Fitness Network’s new Western Australia event – WAFIC.
The final port of call was Istanbul. Training the teams for a new health club chain out there was an eye-opener. I think it was
some of the hardest training workshops I’ve had to deliver as their culture is so different. I don’t think most of the PTs actually know what it might take to make fitness a full-time career, but with more and more training coming from external international companies, I think they’re slowly getting the message.
“IF YOU GET TO THESE CONVENTIONS AND ARE WILLING TO TALK TO PEOPLE, ALL SORTS OF OPPORTUNITIES ARISE.” The crux of it is, get yourself known, take your blinkers off and be open to these new opportunities and the travel will come. Being able to meet, collaborate and develop with people across the globe means more money, greater job satisfaction and increased longevity in the fitness industry as no two months are ever the same, as you can see.

THE LIFE SPAN OF A PT… Ever since I can remember my Dad told me to choose a career that I enjoy because I would have to do it for a loooong time. Well, I like telling people what to do. I like travelling to new places. I don’t like wearing trousers. And I get bored very easily. So it’s lucky that I stumbled into the fitness industry eight years ago. It’s the industry that has sent me all over the world; allowed me to tell phenomenal athletes what to do. It’s an industry that doesn’t judge me because I wear shorts far too often and is so fast paced it is difficult even for someone with the shortest of attention spans to get bored. So why is it that so many fitness professionals have such short working life spans? Surely nobody in their right mind would CHOOSE to leave the most exciting industry in the world to embark on a lifelong ambition to work in…HR. Or Accounts. Or Auditing. Or….sorry, I literally nodded off for a few seconds just typing that. Let’s not beat around the bush. People are leaving our beloved industry because,
despite the fact they love their job, they just aren’t earning enough money. Safe, boring jobs pay regular money each month, cover all your bills and allow you to join everyone else in the world who has a countdown to the weekend that starts about 10.30am every Monday. Why aren’t they earning enough money? It’s possibly because they aren’t good enough, but probably because they aren’t managing themselves effectively. Anyone who keeps up to date with their cheesy philosophical motivational quotes will know about KAIZEN, the Japanese word for continuous improvement. If you don’t know about it and can’t see the relevance to the fitness industry, then I wish you all the best in your new job as an ‘Office Administrator’. So, what separates the industry leaders from the drop-outs? There are obvious things like differences in character and maybe style of delivery, but, in my opinion, nothing can be more important than the content. Education should be a priority for everyone wanting to have a successful career in the fitness industry. Not only is it a good idea in order to know what you are talking about, but it’s also an industry requirement to acquire CPD points and prove that you are developing your ability.
by Mark Laws
In my current role as Training Academy Manager for Jordan Fitness, I have a huge responsibility to reduce the number of enthusiastic trainers who are being forced to leave their ‘dream’ job to become 9-5 desk junkies. Our Results Based Training (RBT) System (www.jordanrbt.com) is designed to guide someone thorough every stage of setting up a successful fitness facility; but even just for a self-employed PT with a boot full of kettlebells, our Training Academy is a vital resource. Take it from somebody who has been there and done it and spent weeks eating rice and gravy because that’s all I could afford – your education is crucial and could mean the difference between wearing shorts or trousers to work every day. The more you learn, the greater chance you have of earning an income from doing something you would consider doing for free. During my time working with professional football clubs there was a popular saying that has stuck with me and hopefully will stick with you – “If you stand still, you will be moving backwards”. Visit our website www.jordanfitness.co.uk or contact me regarding any education queries. Whatever you do - don’t stand still!

PROFESSIONAL INTERVENTION CAN CHALLENGE CHILDHOOD OBESITY Childhood obesity needs urgent action to prevent a future epidemic of obese adults, according to Foresight, a government funded think tank. Current predictions suggest that by 2050, 25% of all children under 16 years of age will be obese, and associated obesityrelated diseases could cost the NHS an additional £45.5 billion per year. More people are becoming aware that obesity issues start in childhood; and there is a critical need to find effective ways to combat excessive childhood weight through increased physical activity, encouraged and guided by exercise professionals. Recently released data showed that 85% of girls and 73% of boys aged 13 fail to do the recommended one hour of physical activity per day, while 25% of children aged 2-15 spend six hours every weekend day being inactive. The Lords Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Committee made a recent call for increased emphasis on school sports, while an October House of Lords Select Committee response suggested there could be ‘some merit in an incentive for General Practitioners (GPs) to give brief advice to their patients on physical activity and
thereby raise professional awareness of the benefits of exercise.’ It also encouraged all commissioners of exercise referral schemes to ‘make the use of appropriately trained and qualified exercise professionals.’ As exercise professionals, we have a critical part to play in the solution by meeting the needs of this expanding market, ensuring that every child is encouraged to safely participate in enjoyable, fun exercise, and start on the path to an active adult lifestyle.
“AS EXERCISE PROFESSIONALS, WE HAVE A CRITICAL PART TO PLAY IN THE SOLUTION BY MEETING THE NEEDS OF THIS EXPANDING MARKET” Consumers, employers and the health professions increasingly recognise that registered REPs exercise professionals are appropriately qualified, with the knowledge, competence and skills to perform specific roles.
while the Register’s category for Physical Activity for Children is specifically designed for under 16s. Level 4 professionals work in obesity and diabetes management, and have the necessary skills representing current best clinical practice, while REPs Level 2 includes knowledge and skills suitable for those working with young people. To encourage children and their parents to consistently engage in sport and physical activity, we need to ensure they get a quality experience. Qualified exercise professionals can help children and adults enjoy physical activities and commit to a fit and healthy lifestyle. The significant health and economic implications of an obesity epidemic emphasise the need for professional support to help overweight children, and their families combat inactivity. REPs professionals can be proud to be recognized as part of the solution, as they can make a significant impact on this national issue. Ultimately, by taking action now, we can challenge the dire obesity predictions awaiting our children. As qualified and committed exercise professionals, we must ensure we contribute our best efforts to making that critical difference.
REPs Level 4 category helps consumers find professionals trained to the required standard to help children tackle obesity,

-2-1 3 WORKOUT 18
WWW.PTMAGAZINE.CO.UK
My name is Ramona Braganza and I am a global fitness expert and celebrity personal trainer based in Los Angeles, California and Vancouver, Canada. Over the past 15 years, I have sculpted some of the most glamorous A- list actresses including Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Scarlett Johannson, Kate Beckinsale, and Amanda Seyfried and shaped some of the hottest men in Tinseltown working with Ryan Reynolds on Blade, Zac Effron on Charlie Saint Cloud and with the cast of The A Team: Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and Sharlto Copely.
Anatomy, Massage and Health & Fitness Books for Every Body
My start as a celebrity trainer began with first client Jessica Alba who I first worked with on the TV show Dark Angel. Following the two years as her private trainer, we continued together for another 10 while on various films that had us travelling to various cities and countries. The movie Honey filmed in New York and Toronto, Into the Blue took us to the Bahamas and a film called Sleeping Dictionary had us working in the rainforests of Borneo, Malaysia. A-list actress Halle Berry joined my roster during the Xmen 2 shoot and for several years I was responsible for keeping her fit and firm. When clients Jessica and Halle both became pregnant at the same time, I trained them during and post pregnancy to help them get their pre-baby bodies back. This allowed me to create my 3-2-1 Baby Bulge Be Gone program now in a DVD series on my website www.ramonabraganza.com While this post-partum pregnancy program has become my niche market in Hollywood, another unique opportunity presented itself a few years earlier while working on the film Xmen 2. As trainers on the film, my business partner and I were challenged with finding time we needed to train the actors. Keeping size on Hugh Jackman meant working out everyday and often his schedule made it impossible to travel back and forth to the gym, so we decided to bring the gym to our actors and so www. Mobilephysique.com was born.
“MOST OF US CAN GET A GREAT WORKOUT IN WITH THE BASICS SUCH AS BODY WEIGHT OR DUMBELLS AND A LITTLE CREATIVITY.” Transforming a 53 foot truck into a State of the art gym that blockbuster movies could hire from us along with our services proved to be a good idea, since Xmen, the trailer has worked on several big budget action films including Fantastic Four, The A Team, the soon to be released Godzilla and the upcoming War Kraft franchise. Of course, the biggest part of my business is still the workout I do with my clients. The 3-2-1 Training Method is a program I designed while working with Jessica Alba. Drawing from my background as a competitive gymnast, NFL cheerleader and Fitness competitor, I developed a workout that contained all the elements – cardio, strength-training and core exercises that I felt important to shaping the Hollywood body. Combining them in a fun and challenging way, the workout burns fat and builds lean muscle tissue and most importantly requires little to no equipment and minimal time.

Most of us can get a great workout in with the basics such as body weight or dumbells and a little creativity. A highly effective workout that can be done in a time saving 20 minutes or can allow you to keep the edge over age with the one hour program. Flexibility is key when working in the entertainment business. As I’m not always given the luxury of a gym environment, training sometimes in the confined space of an actor’s trailer or in the woods beside a pop star’s bus, accommodating situations become as important as the workout itself. What makes my workout effective? Here’s a look at how my program is structured, consisting of 3 Cardio , 2 Circuits and 1 Core it follows this flow. After a Dynamic stretch it continues with a Cardio segment , then Circuit of 3 exercises in a row combining upper and lower body parts and resting briefly between sets. Next it’s back to Cardio then the second Circuit same body parts but 3 different exercises. Finish with the final Cardio and the Core on the floor. On the floor, I take my time with the static stretch to get the body to gear down after high intensity. In this workout you can easily burn up to 500 calories per 1 hour session. While the workouts were originally designed for personal training it has since been adapted for group classes that utilise your unique talent. Regardless of whether you teach zumba, spinning or hip-hop, you are able to incorporate your unique personality into the classes. To help you discover the 3-2-1 Training Method I now offer Instructor training classes across Canada and in the UK. To find out more how about you can get certified to teach the 3-2-1 Training Method or become one of my Master trainers, go to www.321fitnessuk.com .

I have been fortunate to be given the opportunity to turn it into a career. In my 50s now, I realise more than ever the importance of staying active and eating healthy, but to me it’s not just about a workout or meal plan, the true 321 philosophy begins at a deeper level. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, NEW SPORT The festive season of decadent food and relaxation is here, and people across the country will be resolving to kick-start the New Year and get fit for 2014. Are you struggling to encourage your clients to do just that? Rather than hearing the same resolutions, which normally don’t last past February, why not encourage your clients to get active through team or individual sports that they’ll be much more likely to stick with? Whether your patron is a Gym Junkie or a Spectator first timer, there’s an activity to suit:
22
WWW.PTMAGAZINE.CO.UK
THE GYM JUNKIE
The regular gym goer; She knows her way around and the New Year just brings frustration as a wave of newbies flock to the gym. Waiting for the treadmill or weights to become free soon loses its appeal so why not encourage her to try another outlet to keep active? Individual sports such as rock climbing, bouldering or swimming provide a full body workout, sculpting and toning the body whilst giving some diversity to your fitness routine.
THE BUSY PROFESSIONAL
He likes to keep fit but it’s where to find the time. He’s most likely to squeeze a workout in at the crack of dawn or pull on a high-vis vest to drag himself out for a run in the evening. Time is a constraint and exercise gets bumped by the daily grind of working life. Therefore gym contracts
are an unnecessary expense, so why not persuade him to sign up for a pay-as-yougo plan to avoid a costly commitment? He can pay for the activity he does; this can be applied to sports facilities too. For example, if your client fancies a kickabout in his lunch hour, football pitches can be booked anytime and some companies have a ‘block booking’ to guarantee a weekly slot. If he wants to enlist some work colleagues to keep him motivated, what about the fast paced game of Handball 5’s? Or maybe he could put a team together for a ‘no-strings attached’ league such as ‘rush hockey’ or ‘touch rugby’.
THE SPECTATOR
She quite enjoys watching sport on the television or down the local with friends, but the thought of putting on her trainers and actually playing doesn’t fill
“WHATEVER THE AGE, FITNESS ABILITY OR WORKING HOURS OF YOUR CLIENTS, THERE IS A SPORT TO SUIT EVERYONE”
her with much enthusiasm. She’s looking for something different and unique to grab, and keep, her attention. Why not tell her about cool, urban sports such as Freerunning or Bike Polo. She can try these more unique activities outside of her sessions without having to worry about committing to a regular league or missing the Saturday game on the box. Whatever the age, fitness ability or working hours of your clients, there is a sport to suit everyone, and it will keep them motivated to continue with sessions when the weather gets worse. EXPERT TRAINING SERIES
BOSU
®
HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING The BOSU® is a fun and versatile piece of equipment, allowing you to work the whole body and develop a range of different training goals including speed, power, strength and stability. This BOSU® HIIT program is based on one of the most famous high intensity interval protocols in the world, proven to simultaneously develop aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Each set is short but performed at maximum intensity to deliver the greatest fat burning and metabolism boosting effects. For more information on BOSU® please visit www.physicalcompany.co.uk If you would like a PDF of this page please email info@ptmagazine.co.uk
PERFORM EIGHT 20-SECOND SETS OF EACH EXERCISE, WITH TEN SECONDS OF REST BETWEEN EACH SET. REPEAT FOR ALL FOUR EXERCISES
Alternate Single Leg Hop Start with one foot on the top of the BOSU® and raise the the opposite arm. Jump up as high as you can and land on the opposite leg. Try to keep all of your weight on the leg on the BOSU®, just using the back leg for stability. As soon as the back foot hits the ground jump back up. This explosive lower body exercise uses all the large muscle groups of the lower body and will quickly elevate heart rate and breathing rate. Go big or go home!
V-Sit Crunch
Press Up Walk Down
Alternate Transverse Squat Jump
Lie on the BOSU® in a position where you are balanced with your legs and torso off the floor, without arching your back over the BOSU®. Flex your trunk and your hips so you can reach forward and touch your heels. Keep your abdominals engaged throughout the exercise and perform the reps very slowly, especially on the way down. Your whole abdominal wall has to work hard in this exercise and because of all the tiny adjustments required to balance on the BOSU® the burn gets pretty intense.
Place your hands flat on top of the BOSU® with your shoulders directly above your hands. Take small steps backwards until you are nearly in a straight line from hands to feet and then walk back up. Keep your back neutral and your body in line throughout. Try to avoid excessive hip movement and keep your shoulders down away from your ears. If you are struggling to maintain good posture and alignment, limit the range of movement to the point at which form begins to deteriorate. This is an amazing exercise for building shoulder stability and for developing the ability to transfer force through the trunk.
Stand 90 degrees to the side of the BOSU®. Jump up, turn 90 degrees and land on the BOSU® with both feet at the same time. Stick the landing, taking a second to show balance and control. Jump off the BOSU® and turn 90 degrees the other way. Land softly and repeat. Try to minimise any wobble in your knees on the landings and maintain good knee alignment throughout. This exercise requires a lot of balance and control, and is a progression from regular explosive jumps to shock the nervous system and get your heart rate up.

Chest press
Upright Row
Lunge
The perfect fitness move for engaging your core whilst strengthening your chest, shoulders and arms. Standing with one foot ahead of the other, face away from the anchor point, holding the TRX handles in each hand, wrists should be in a straight line with the forearm and palms facing the floor. Pull your shoulder blades down and back. Slowly lunge forwards, allowing the hips to bend until the straps become tight.
An ideal cardio exercise that engages muscles from the arms, back and core. Hold the anchor in each hand and lean back in a 90 degrees position, until the straps get tight. Engaging core and arm muscles slowly pull yourself up to a standing position.
A must exercise for improving lower limb movement, endurance, balance and overall strength. In the standing position place one foot in the anchor, putting one leg in front of the other and bend the knee 90 degrees so the back leg is forced to touch the floor, make sure the torso remains horizontal to the knee.

TRENDS TO LOOKOUT FOR IN 2014 TRX tops the 17th IDEA Fitness Programs & Equipment Trends Report The 17th IDEA Fitness Programs & Equipment Trends Report has released its latest findings to reveal the fitness trends that are rising in popularity, and they’re set to take 2014 by storm in the UK. Topping the list at the number one spot across equipment, group exercise and personal training trends is body weight leverage training – the category that was introduced last year to distinguish the incredible rise in popularity of TRX® Suspension Training®. The product has become a staple feature in PT kit bags, and even the gym floor, but this year you can now expect to see your favourite yellow and black straps appear more regularly on the group exercise timetable. TRX classes bridge the gap between what your PT does on the gym floor, and Group Exercise Instructors teach in those side rooms! So what else can you expect to see more of? TOP 5 GROUP EXERCISE TRENDS 1. Body weight leverage training (TRX Suspension Training) Suspension Training is a superb way to build muscular strength as well as improve
core stability and posture. Users of the TRX Suspension Trainer perform exercises that build power, strength, balance, flexibility and mobility at the intensity they choose. Over 300 different exercises for the upper and lower body can be performed, using the exerciser’s own body weight and gravity to create resistance. The difficulty level is increased by changing the body’s position and angle in order to add greater resistance. In a group environment, you will be sure to see yourself pushed that little bit further, every time! 2. Core conditioning classes Pilates and Yoga classes have fast become a staple fixture on the gym timetable, increasing flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness. Both also improve muscular and postural strength, and have been fuelled in popularity with the introduction of variants of the exercise such as performing both in 40°C heat. 3. Boot camp classes The introduction of Barry’s Bootcamp and Orange Theory Fitness into the UK market has bought what was traditionally an outdoor concept onto the gym floor, and expanded the ‘boot camp’ category to its highest position to date. 4. Strength training classes
product developments have powered the growth of more innovative ways to strength train, including the TRX Rip Trainer which not only increases strength, but also rotational power and core stability.
“TRX CLASSES BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN WHAT YOUR PT DOES ON THE GYM FLOOR, AND GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTORS TEACH IN THOSE SIDE ROOMS!” 5. Dance (urban, street, funk, hip-hop) In recent years, the traditional exercise class has moved on leaps and bounds, with urban and street dance classes such as Bokwa and Street Fit really starting to take precedence over the popular Latin options that dominate the market. For more information on TRX please visit www.trxtraining.com/uk, where you can find out more about product, education and programming across all TRX products.

Clubs can start their RBT journey at any stage; for the best results we recommend you start from the beginning. STAGE 1 – EVALUATE The first thing we will help you decide is what sort of space you want. How big will the space be? Who will be using it? What equipment do you need? You may know the answers to some of these questions. There may be questions that you haven’t even considered. We are experts in our field and will help you make these important decisions. STAGE 2 – ENHANCE
Once again we have an expert design team that will customise your facility for you. Whether you want huge wall banners, specific floor markings or educational posters to put up with specific pieces of equipment, we can make it happen. Our Marketing team can also provide you
with a 3D video fly through that can be used on your website and social media sites. STAGE 3 – ENGAGE The icing on your functional fitness journey is the ongoing support and education provided by our industry leading Training Academy. To stay on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), fitness instructors and personal trainers have a requirement to achieve between 16-24 Continued Professional Development (CPD) credits. Jordan Fitness offers a large range of online courses and face-to-face workshops on a variety of functional fitness training techniques to provide the credits required for REPs. Our support doesn’t end there. We can provide you with a video library of exercises that can be streamed onto the gym floor or used by staff as an exercise directory. Our extensive list of workshops and CPD courses can be delivered face-to-face at your facility or online anywhere in the world. Whatever stage your facility is at, RBT is a great concept that will enhance the service you are offering, improve the results your clients are getting and ultimately increase your revenue. Fabulous Flapjacks (Makes 12)
Tracy Griffen’s secret healthy snacking weapon Make a tray of fabulous flapjacks at the beginning of the week and you’ll have snacks for the rest of the week. They’re also excellent for energy on the go instead of those awful energy gels. I usually wrap them up once cooled and hide them so I don’t eat them all at once... I like to think these are healthier than shop bought snacks, as despite having sugar (brown) and fat (butter) in, they are all natural. And it’s EASY!
Quinoa Green Curry (Serves two)
So simple, and the cashews and quinoa are both good sources of vegetable protein. • 2 cups of diced vegetables (an assortment of carrots, sweet potato, courgette, potato, onion, beans) • Handful raw cashew nuts • 3 tbsp green curry paste • Additional spices are optional, i.e. chilli, garlic, ginger, holy basil, coriander • 1 tbsp coconut oil • 1 tin coconut milk • 1 cup cooked quinoa 1. Wedges of lime, finely chopped spring onions and fresh coriander leaves. 2. Fry off the curry paste in a little oil and add onions, then add the rest of the vegetables and sauté until aromatic. 3. Add the coconut milk. 4. Cook on a medium heat until nearly done. 5. 5 minutes before serving, mix the curry, quinoa and cashews together in a pot on a low heat. 6. Garnish with spring onions, coriander leaves and a wedge of lime for squeezing.

Fennel and Tomato Bake • • • • • • •
One large fennel (or two small) 200-250g cherry tomatoes Splash olive oil Juice of half a lemon Sea salt and cracked pepper Few sprigs of fresh thyme Tiny wee splash balsamic vinegar (optional)
1. Wash and remove the tough outer bits of the fennel, and chop the base out in a ‘V’ shape. 2. Cut into 5mm slices, then steam until nearly tender. 3. Wash the cherry tomatoes and combine with the steamed fennel in a casserole dish. 4. Drizzle over olive oil, balsamic and lemon juice, add salt, pepper and thyme (fresh parsley tastes yummy too.) 5. Toss it all to combine and cook on a high shelf in an oven at about 220 degrees celsius. 6. Cook for about 20 minutes or until the tomatoes are bursting from their skin. 7. Serve hot or allow to cool to room temperature.
• 50g butter, melted • 100g soft brown sugar, I prefer less • 1 free range organic egg (as happy hens lay better eggs) • 1 teaspoon mixed spice • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 150g porridge oats • 50g plain flour • 100g raisins / dried cranberries / sunflower / pumpkin seeds / mixed nuts • 1 dessertspoon of golden syrup (optional) 1. In a bowl, mix butter and soft brown sugar. Add the egg and mix. 2. Weigh the plain flour straight into the bowl, add baking powder and mixed spice and mix. 3. Now add porridge oats and seeds / dried fruit, (I like sunflower seeds and dried cranberries). Mix well together. If you have any golden syrup, a dessertspoon here will ensure they stay soft and chewy, but it’s not vital. 4. They are now ready to cook. You can use 12 paper cupcake cases, or spoon directly into a lightly greased muffin tray. Alternatively, you can use a baking tray, but wait until the flapjacks are completely cold before cutting them up. 5. Bake at 150 degrees for around 15 minutes. They are nicer underdone rather than too crunchy. 6. Cool and wrap individually.
BESTONTEST Multipower Protein Shake Multipower protein shake is really easy to use on the go. All you have to do is shake it and enjoy. It beats a lot of the competitors on the amount of protein you’re getting in your shake, with a hefty 55g. Multipower is great for giving your body important nutrients after a workout, but in this selection of products it didn’t fare as well on the taste test as the others.

It’s also available in Banana Vanilla and Summer Fruits flavours, and you can drink it mixed with water too.

PowerBar Protein plus
SHAKE ‘N’ GO is different to some other protein drinks as this is formulated with SE-Bio-PRO protein complex, green tea and L-Carnitine to promote fat loss and increase lean muscles. DA Fitness claims that a protein-based diet suppresses hunger and increases fat metabolism. As the name suggests, SHAKE ‘N’ GO is easy to drink on the go, as you simply fill the bottle with water up to the line, shake and drink. With 25g of protein it’s not bad at all, although the protein taste is detectable.
This was the most simple protein drink we tried, as it comes as a milkshake so there’s no need to add anything. We tried the strawberry flavour and it was delicious. It contains 50g protein per bottle, which is why we had to give it a generous 4 stars.

It was difficult to decide the winner of the protein drinks as we had some really good contenders with this selection. NUTRITION
+ HEALTH As part of my fitness training I gained a qualification in Public Health Nutrition, but it was not until I attended a further short nutrition course in Sweden, that my eyes were opened to the value of alternative and functional medicine. I researched full UK courses available and went on to study Naturopathic Nutrition, part-time, at CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine) because I liked the emphasis on Naturopathy, or ‘Nature Cure’.
Realising that nutrition has a bigger impact on my body composition than exercise, was the key to overcoming my weight issues. By Personal Trainer Keris Marsden, who is studying Naturopathic Nutrition at CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine). I am a Personal Trainer working in the fitness industry. One of the reasons I first got into exercise was because I faced a constant battle to maintain my weight. I tried every diet going; wasting hours counting calories and avoiding fat, being misguided by food industry marketing. Whilst exercise certainly helped my weight issue, it wasn’t the key to resolving my health issues. I had bad skin and was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a common hormonal disorder. The medication left me with dreadful digestive issues and I was soon diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I was concerned that the medication was only treating the symptoms and not actually addressing the underlying cause of my conditions.

Studying Naturopathic Nutrition has provided me with a clearer understanding of how nutrition impacts upon every aspect of health including our hormonal balance. I soon realised that many of the foods I considered healthy were actually further complicating my health issues. After making major changes to my diet, which were appropriate for me, the difference was incredible. My transformation has gone
“IT WAS NOT UNTIL I ATTENDED A FURTHER SHORT NUTRITION COURSE IN SWEDEN, THAT MY EYES WERE OPENED TO THE VALUE OF ALTERNATIVE AND FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE.” from strength to strength; my PCOS has disappeared, I often receive compliments about my complexion, and maintaining a healthy weight is effortless. The biggest change for me has involved realising that nutrition has a bigger impact on my body composition than exercise. In fact, around 80% of the body’s composition is nutrition based. As a student at CNM I have gained a fascinating and in-depth understanding of the role of nutrition as medicine, which has transformed my own
health and fitness. I still love to train but now I only need a couple of sessions in the gym each week, leaving me with lots more time to geek away with my nutrition books. I’m very excited about graduating in nutritional therapy, when I’ll be able to use my extensive knowledge to help improve my Personal Fitness clients’ health and vitality. As part of my CNM training I’m gaining 200 hours of nutritional therapy practice in student clinics. I’ve learnt so much there about taking a professional empathic approach that I feel I now also have enhanced interpersonal skills to offer clients, plus I can speak to them from personal experience!

CARRIE HOGAN: HOW UNIVERSITY LED TO STARTING HER OWN BUSINESS Carrie Hogan was blessed with having a great education and always believed that achieving “a good place at university” was the only way to achieve a great and fulfilling career. At this time, Carrie wasn’t too sure where her future career would take her, but she always knew that she wanted to help people. During sixth form Carrie suffered from aggressive anxiety and depression. Carrie’s recovery made her more independent, strong willed and mindful of how external influences can affect the body. During this time Carrie discovered exercise and physical activity. She quickly learnt that doing a range of different activities from weights, boxing, meditation and yoga could completely overhaul her mental and physical well-being. Although Carrie attended Leeds University to study Philosophy and Psychology she grew increasingly interested in Sports Science and maximising physical performance through nutrition. After Carrie’s first year at university she used her summer off to gain her Diploma in Studio Instruction. Carrie commented, “Finding the Diploma in Studio Instruction, which included twoweeks in the studio learning and teaching classes, was incredible. The range of classes covered during the course helped me learn about myself as an instructor. I may have laughed my way through my Step demo
class but knew it felt amazing teaching Pump.” After much deliberation Carrie decided to defer a year and concentrate on her health and fitness journey and she completed her Advanced Personal Training Diploma, and a Sports Massage Therapy Diploma, which led Carrie to start her own business.
“I BOUNCE OUT OF BED EACH DAY LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT’S AHEAD” Carrie initially worked as a freelance PT, teaching in local gyms and sports clubs to gain class experience, Carrie then organised a local outdoor bootcamp and gradually built a solid foundation of clients. This success led Carrie to make the decision not to return to university, but instead set up her very own business, Holistic Fitness Training, which concentrates on both a person’s physical and mental wellbeing when combining positive exercise with mindfulness and a nutrient-dense diet. Carrie continued: “It’s … very encouraging to see former tutors of mine doing great things in the industry and in the media. I have no regrets in choosing this path. I bounce out of bed each day looking forward to what’s ahead, and that’s how it should be.” For information on courses, please visit www.premierglobal.co.uk.

KINESIOLOGY TAPING THE MODERN ANSWER TO SPORTING AILMENTS Kinesiology taping is definitely the current buzzword in the field of sports medicine. This brightly coloured tape is a common sight at all major sporting events, most notably the 2012 Olympics – across a vast number of disciplines, and increasingly in recreational activities too. Anybody that is in involved with assessing, treating and rehabilitating-sports related injuries, or even patients that present with back and neck pain, will need to have the skill of taping. Castro-Sanchez et al. (2012) studied the effect of Kinesiology Taping in reducing disability and pain in chronic non-specific low-back pain. They found that individual’s experienced significant improvements, immediately after the application of Kinesiology Taping, in the following categories: disability, pain, isometric endurance of the trunk muscles. THE ORIGINS OF KINESIOLOGY TAPING In the 1970s there was a Japanese chiropractor called Dr Kenzo Kase who brought the technique to the international arena. He was the first person to have the idea of applying a new type of taping method, which subsequently led to a new form of sports tape. Kase wanted to develop a taping system that would naturally assist in the healing of damaged tissue by encouraging lymphatic drainage and at the same time, provide support to the joints and muscles without causing a restriction to the range of motion (ROM). HOW DOES IT WORK? Kinesiology taping has been clinically
shown to help with the natural response to inflammation as it targets different receptors within the somatosensory system (sensory systems associated with the body; includes skin senses and proprioception and the internal organs). Correct application of the kinesiology tape will help alleviate pain and encourages the facilitation of lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This lifting effect helps create distortions in the skin, thus allowing for a decrease in the inflammatory process for the affected areas. HOW TO USE AND APPLY KINESIOLOGY TAPE Kinesiology taping products tend to come in a standard size and length that is normally 5cm x 5m and this particular size is generally the choice of product for the qualified therapist. Some kinesiology taping products come in an already precut form, which in theory, makes life a little bit easier. All top professional and non-professionals in every sector of sport, throughout the world, are having this eye-catching tape applied to them, and for anyone involved in sports, health & fitness and wellness, it’s important to be aware of the practice of Kinesiology Taping, and where possible know how to apply the tape. It is becoming increasingly important for all personal trainers to have knowledge of its importance and reason for use. John Gibbons book, A Practical Guide to Kinesiology Taping, is out early 2014, and available for pre-order from January from Amazon. The book comes with a free DVD that explains in depth, how exactly kinesiology taping can be applied. John Gibbons is a registered sports osteopath, author and lecturer for the ‘Bodymaster Method’ ®.
injury
by Chris Gallagher
PREVENTION The primary goal of any training programme is injury prevention. If your client is injured it doesn’t matter whether there goals are weight loss, muscle building, sports performance or anything else. If you’re injured and unable to train you won’t be burning any calories, building muscle or strength and fitness. An injured client is a client who can’t achieve their goals and that is ultimately bad for business. Injury prevention is a key aim in any programme. So how do you ensure your programmes are designed with this in mind? Beginning with a new client, your first step should be to ensure a comprehensive consultation. Initially when talking to a prospective client, find out as much as you can about their training and medical history. Have they had any previous injuries that you may need to consider in undertaking a new training regime? (If so can you contact and discuss with any physiotherapists, chiropractors or medical staff with whom
they have consulted and who can advise future training practices?).
in between upper body exercise, are good examples.
A detailed history completed, the next stage is assessing your client and their current basic movement patterns and looking for any mobility issues or inflexibility. Do they exhibit any obvious muscle imbalances or weaknesses? Common problems to look for here may be a lack of control around the hips in basic squat or lunge movements. Shoulder girdle mobility issues and poor thoracic spine control may be common upper body issues.
As fatigue increases, the potential for injury grows. As well as a suitable volume and intensity of training, it is essential to allow for sufficient recovery. Arrange training with planned rest of lighter intensity training sessions and weeks, and advise your clients on effective recovery strategies. Talk to them about lifestyle management, sleep, nutrition and any other suitable recovery methods.
Monitoring your clients’ ability to undertake the exercises within your programmes is an on-going process that does not end after the initial assessment. Continually look for the development of any weaknesses, imbalances or restricted mobility as you progress the difficulty of their training. The warm-up is the perfect time to work on rehabilitation and preventative exercises. Time with clients may be limited, so doubling up the warm-up with exercises that improve posture, muscle imbalances, aid flexibility and mobility at key joints is the most effective use of your time. Sets of band resisted face pulls, in between lower body exercises or terminal knee extensions,
“THE WARM-UP IS THE PERFECT TIME TO WORK ON REHABILITATION” Unfortunately injuries are part and parcel of regular activity but there is plenty that we, as personal trainers can be doing to minimise the likelihood of clients sustaining any injuries that prevent them training and achieving their goals. An injury free client is one who is more likely to achieve their goals and act as a testament to your credentials as a trainer and ultimately grow your business. THE NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT ENHANCES SLEEP AND IMPROVES PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE Does a good night’s sleep really work wonders? As the only mattress on the market today that is clinically proven to enhance sleep and actively aid recovery after exercise, the Mammoth Hydraflex Sport can help fitness fans see improved results through nothing more than a good bit of shut eye. Sports science has come on in leaps and bounds over the past decade and almost every facet of an athlete’s waking life has been scrutinised in minute detail. But it’s
MIND
OVER MATTRESS
only recently that the attention of sports and health professionals have turned to what we do more than anything else . . . sleep. In fact, some of the biggest names in sport now take steps to ensure they get the right kind of sleep, including Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford and Personal Trainer and Pro Bikini Competitor Michelle Brannen – both placing their trust in mattresses powered by Mammoth Technologies. BUT WHAT DOES A POOR SLEEP PATTERN MEAN FOR YOUR AVERAGE GYM-GOER? For those of us who become accustomed
to just five or six hours sleep a night we may not realise that we are no longer alert and at our physical peak. Sleep deprivation symptoms can be subtle yet significant. They include: Fatigue, dips in motivation and lethargy – making it harder to exercise to full potential. Drops in concentration and coordination – irregular sleep patterns can cause motor skills, anticipation and decision making to suffer. Not ideal for those of us who play sports competitively. Reduced levels of IGF-1 – IGF-1 is a growth hormone which plays an important role in the body’s recovery and repair. Weight gain – the most worrying of all is the growing body of research showing increased calorie intake and reduced energy expenditure a direct result of sleep deprivation. All of these elements combine to create one big headache for a personal trainer trying to turn around the health and fitness of a client. If they aren’t getting the rest they need in the bedroom, they won’t reap the rewards in the gym. CURE THE UNDERLYING CAUSE A good night’s sleep is often easier said than done. Whether it’s a bad back, sore muscles or overheating, not all of us can switch off just as easily as we can turn the lights out. This is where the Mammoth Hydroflex Sport excels more than any other mattress on the market today. Featuring Medical Grade Foam™ within its V-Max® Cell Technology, the Hydroflex Sport provides zoned postural support for improved spinal alignment. This not only eases the pressure and stress on individuals carrying existing injuries but helps to prevent us picking up those niggles often associated with a bad night’s sleep. So if your clients are turning up to their appointments bleary eyed and yawning, you might want to consider explaining to them how adding a bit of Mammoth Technology to their regime could help them achieve the results of their dreams.

Wild Training Studios Creating effective workouts in a small space
Wild Training Studios in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire is a prime example of how clever programming and versatile equipment can make even the most unusual spaces an effective place to train clients. Owner Hannah Camden opened the 17m by 3.5m studio in July 2013, she offers functional fitness classes for small groups. For many PTs, the long, narrow room would come with too many limitations. Working with James Griffiths, founder of Wild Training, the two were able to create a hard working space that customers would love. The studio has a ballet bar and ceiling anchor points which allow Wild Training to use two clever pieces of kit; Stroops Slastix® resistance bands, and The Human Trainer bodyweight training system. The equipment takes up virtually no space at all, yet allows literally hundreds of exercises to be performed, meaning that up to 10 people can train effectively in such a small space. Wild Training offers 30-minute Combat and Rip classes which incorporate the Stroops Double GunÔ, a full body system with waist, thigh, ankle, wrist, foot and bicep straps

that provide resistance to every move and build explosive power and speed. Hourlong cardio and toning classes combine both Stroops and The Human Trainer. The Human Trainer helps build strength and increases flexibility and muscle tone. The dual strap suspension system encourages biomechanically correct movement and allows virtually unlimited fitness options to train the entire body. “Since opening the studio, Stroops and The Human Trainer have been used in many of our functional fitness classes,” explains Camden. “Stroops and The Human Trainer work well together as they can easily be unhooked and re-attached allowing us to switch between equipment very quickly. The kit also doesn’t take up much room and at the end of the class we simply unhook it. It’s a lot quicker than having to put away large, heavy fitness equipment!” According to Camden the classes have been extremely popular with members. “They love the different styles of training that Stroops and The Human Trainer offer,” she explains. “We rely on word of mouth to boost membership. Over the past four months we have gained 60 new members just through recommendations alone. I think the original nature of our workouts really helps with this.” “It is no surprise that Stroops and The
Human Trainer are working really well at Wild Training Studios,” says John Halls, Sales and Marketing Director at Physical Company. “The equipment provides fun and unlimited fitness options for any studio or training space allowing workouts to be tailored for group or personal training sessions.”
“THE EQUIPMENT TAKES UP VIRTUALLY NO SPACE AT ALL, YET ALLOWS LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF EXERCISES TO BE PERFORMED, MEANING THAT UP TO 10 PEOPLE CAN TRAIN EFFECTIVELY IN SUCH A SMALL SPACE.” Membership to Wild Training Studios costs £50 per month. Members can attend 3 sessions a week and have a choice from 28 classes. They also get one free 60min PT session a month and have access to nutritional advice and training programmes through a personal account on the website.
CAN YOU GIVE ANY ADVICE TO PTS WHO HAVE AWKWARD SPACES TO WORK WITH? Awkward spaces can be limiting but at the same time if you approach programming creatively, even the most unusual spaces can accommodate awesome training sessions. Think about using different styles of training than you might do usually. A good personal trainer should be able to adapt a programme to suit their surroundings. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF A SPACE IS USABLE – IS THERE A MINIMUM SIZE? If I can swing my arms overhead and I can step in every direction then a space is good enough for me to do the best training I know. I always have a very clear idea of what I want to be able to do in a space. If you know that, then knowing if the space is big enough is easy. WHAT ARE THE MOST VERSATILE PIECES OF KIT FOR USE IN A SMALL / UNUSUAL SPACE? A suspension training system, such as the Human Trainer, will always work well when space is limited. You can be creative with what you use as an anchor point, just make sure it’s strong enough to hold your weight! Having a decent matted area will allow all kinds of great body weight training. I do lots of Capoeira and Capoeira inspired core conditioning work with my clients where we just need a matt and some floor space. I’m a big fan of Bulgarian bags, Indian clubs, kettlebells, Stroops, and plyometric boxes when space is limited. CAN YOU DO A PROPER CARDIO WORKING IN A SMALL / UNUSUAL SPACE? Some of the most intense cardio circuits we do happen within three square meters. Take an integrated approach to your workouts where you challenge different energy systems within one style of circuit. Use different pieces of equipment that require different tempos and your cardio system will be working a lot harder than it would on a steady paced run.

USING PADWORK FOR RETENTION A good pad holder is truly indispensible - after all, padwork is one of the only activities clients CAN’T do themselves. MOTIVATION One of the reasons clients leave trainers is lack of motivation or lack of results. We can attempt to meet both of these needs with a very simple drill. The Boxercise Flashpad drill provides motivation through ‘scoring points’ on the pads thus a non weight related goal can be set, targeted and achieved through technique and skill improvement. THE CHALLENGE The challenge is to ‘Earn your Wraps’ (boxing handwraps ). DON’T let your client buy their own handwraps- they have to EARN them, so how do you do this? Explain to them when they can score 20 points in a 2-minute round on the pads, at the end of the session, you will GIVE them their wraps. Studies have shown that motivation drops between the 6th and the 8th visit so THAT’S when you LET
them win them. Yes I did say let them win! YOU control the pads so if your skill level is reasonable you can control how many points people can score. Handwraps are relatively cheap and won’t cost too much to give away especially after they have paid for 6-8 sessions.
“THE CLEVER PT CAN TAP INTO THIS NEED OF THEIR CLIENTS TO TALK ABOUT THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS AND TURN IT INTO A WALKING ADVERTISEMENT FOR THEIR PT BUSINESS” In a class situation I teach 2 new punches each week, when they can do all 8 punches safely they ‘earn’ their wraps. When someone has earned their wraps I announce it to the class and everyone in the class applauds. It’s like a little ceremony of sorts and their motivation is reinforced. CLIENT REWARDS People like to be rewarded for achievement and like to talk about 1 thing more than anything else – THEMSELVES, well most people anyway! The clever PT can tap into this need of their clients to talk about their achievements and turn it into a walking advertisement for their PT business. If your client has lost a few pounds which of their friends wouldn’t notice? Not many! Their friends will ask them how they have lost weight. Not only can you retain clients but recruit new ones with your ‘walking, talking advertisement’. In todays, ‘virtual self’ world, many will post their improvements and achievements through social media. The occasional ‘selfie’ will update their status proclaiming their new found motivation and results. If your client has ‘won’ their wraps you can be pretty sure they will boast about it to their friends. HOW DOES THE DRILL WORK? Flash Pads work like this-Pad holder is moving around and puts up the pads for 1 second (stop moving for the 1 second). The puncher must hit
52
WWW.PTMAGAZINE.CO.UK
both the pads in 1 second to score 1 point. You can start at a slow pace and then as their skill improves make it harder using front foot pivots to create space. Please see this youtube video explaining how it works: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=M7Dax0yWkiM As your clients improve you will need to keep your skills up to date to remain truly indespensible! Refurbished or New Fitness Equipment What are the Considerations? The choices for every gym owner are really quite straightforward – you need some fitness equipment should you buy new or refurbished, and if you plump for secondhand what should you take into account? Clearly the most important factor in your decision-making will be the budget you have set aside for the project. Whether you are: • A start-up gym; • Expanding the equipment you have to cope with new members • Replacing old kit that has had its day • Wanting to add to your range of, say, strength • Adding a class such as Spin or Suspension Training DO YOUR FINANCES RUN TO BUYING NEW THIS TIME AROUND? HAVE YOU CONSIDERED LEASING? If you consider the start-up costs of a
typical gym with 55 pieces of Cardio, 25 Studio Bikes, 32 pieces of strength and an assortment of gym equipment the cost of buying New would be around £375,000 whereas the cost of buying the same Fully Refurbished would be around £140,000 saving over 60%. SO WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING REFURBISHED? The first and most important thing to think about is the level of refurbishment you are being offered. Typically trade suppliers offer a Full Refurbish (Note: some suppliers call this level re-manufactured.) and an Economy Level. It’s important to understand what level you’re being offered so ask for a specification. Full Refurbishment will always include repainting so you can use the opportunity to customise; whether to match your existing kit or choose a striking colour scheme to make a statement. It’s amazing the difference you can make to, such as Life Pro Series strength with a change of paint colour and bright upholstery. At this level you should expect that key components that have become worn will be replaced and that you will get a warranty – anything from 1 month to a year is normal. With regular maintenance this sort of kit should give you years of good service.
An Economy refurbish often means little more than a clean and service, so it will not compare with the ‘as new’ you would expect from a full refurb. This can be a viable option but it may not offer the same potential to refresh and delight your members. Ask for photographs so that you can check the condition.
“IF YOU CONSIDER THE STARTUP COSTS OF A TYPICAL GYM WITH 55 PIECES… THE COST OF BUYING NEW WOULD BE AROUND £375,000” REFURBISHING TAKES TIME SO CHECK THE DELIVERY LEAD-TIME FITS WITH YOUR PLANS Most gym owners are more than satisfied with their refurbished buys and there is no reason why you shouldn’t be. Check the specification, and warranty you’re being offered and choose your supplier carefully and you should benefit from the huge savings that refurbished kit can offer.

Franchising Opportunities:
ELMS FITNESS It can be exciting but daunting when looking to open your own gym or studio, there is so much to think about: The size of the unit, the rent, the rates, getting the best deal on equipment, the marketing and much more, and there is the business aspect to think about too, from business planning, raising finance, doing accounts to negotiating leases. Have you ever considered franchising? Why not take advantage of a business model with systems and procedures already in place and proven? The benefits you receive from opening a franchise rather than starting a club on your own is the fact you are using someone else’s model that they have spent a lot of time and money on, so you don’t have to make those expensive mistakes that most businesses make in the early years. Elms Personal Fitness is a new, affordable gym franchise that offers the opportunity to own and operate your own Elms Personal Fitness Club Franchise with full guidance, support and training to help make your club a success from the start. Due to the success of the current clubs, Elms Personal Fitness recently set up their concept as a franchise opportunity, as it was seen as a perfect opportunity for any

fitness professional to own and operate their own gym. Now with 3 franchised clubs they are looking to grow their network by looking for hard-working, enthusiastic fitness professionals wanting to take the next step in their career.
YOU ARE USING SOMEONE ELSE’S MODEL THAT THEY HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY ON, SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO MAKE … EXPENSIVE MISTAKES Each franchise owner is given support from the start in helping find the premises and also negotiate the lease with the landlord. Full training is then provided in how to set up and operate an Elms Personal Fitness Franchise, the fit out and refurbishment of the unit is organised for you and the equipment is provided by Star Trac and Escape, guaranteeing great savings. A 12-month marketing plan is also provided to help make your club a success. Elms Personal Fitness provides you with a proven model, they provide you with all the systems and processes that will help make your franchise club successful, yes you still have to put in the hard work but you can do so knowing that the model has already
been successful in other locations and you will benefit from being part of a successful chain of clubs. You will also have the full support of your field support manager who is there to help you with any issue that may arise at any time. Elms Personal Fitness Clubs can operate in spaces from as little as 1,200 sq ft, which makes it an affordable franchise model. It is even something that can be run within an existing club to provide extra revenue. Each club is based on 200-250 members and although potential earnings cannot be guaranteed, as it depends on many factors, if based on company owned Elms Personal Fitness Clubs, each franchise owner has the potential to earn anything up to £50,000pa. The minimum investment needed to own your own Elms Personal Fitness Club is £17,500 (subject to status) and with good reputations with equipment suppliers and finance companies, they can even help you with raising finance. So if you are a hard-working, enthusiastic individual wanting to start your own Elms Personal Fitness Club then call or email the Elms Recruitment Team today (details opposite) or go to elmsfranchise.co.uk and complete the initial franchise enquiry form and one of the team will be in touch with you soon. Setting up a new studio space Many personal trainers teach group fitness classes. It is an easy way for club members to get to know you and build a rapport and it’s a great opportunity to demonstrate your motivational style and knowledge of body training. As the class leader, you need to be sure the delivery of the class is flawless - from the sound, to lights, to space, to equipment availability. Here are a few things to think of as you prepare the studio for your class: The music you use will set the tone of the class. Do you want a consistent BPM (beats per minute) or do you want to vary it for different exercises? Having numerous playlists on an iPod, iPhone or iPad is a simple way to be prepared. Playlists can be made anywhere, so you can maximise your time commuting or between clients to create the perfect mix. How can you play music without the right sound system? If you have your own studio, then the Economy Package from Sound
Dynamics provides excellent value for money. The cased control console includes an inbuilt vari-speed CD player, mixer amplifier that allows for separate music and voice adjustment, speakers, speaker cables and even a built-in radio mic system with wireless headset microphone. Portable systems are also available, perfect for instructors that take their equipment from venue to venue. The QX12 200w System is fantastic!
LIGHTING EFFECTS CAN DEFINITELY INJECT ENERGY INTO THE CLASS Lighting can also be really important. It’s something that can completely alter the atmosphere in a room and enhance the experience for your members in an instant - lighting effects can definitely inject energy into the class. The QTX Mini Galaxy Laser is tiny and simply stunning. Even though you could fit it in the palm of your hand it can still fill a room with fantastic clusters of laser beams and colour combinations. It even comes with a remote!
With the basics of sound and lights set up, you need to make sure there is space for the equipment you might need. If you are teaching a boxing class, make sure the pads and gloves are dry before class. Sessions using free weights, Swiss balls, or kettlebells need to have enough for the entire class. Providing an organised way to store the equipment makes the studio look more presentable and is safer too. Optional touches include a clock and thermostat. Clocks help keep sessions on time. A clock with a second hand is extremely useful for intervals. Temperatures can raise and fall easily as the seasons change and classes range in intensity. A remote-controlled unit makes adjusting temperature a breeze without interrupting class. Lighting, acoustics, music and timekeeping are all things to think about when you’re setting up a new space for training or as you start a new position. A little investment in the beginning will set the standards high and your membership retention level will reflect this in 2014. Visit www.sound-dynamics.co.uk for fantastic studio ideas

WHAT DO QUALIFICATIONS IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY REALLY MEAN? If you’re thinking about a career in the fitness industry, you need to think outside the box of just weights and cardiovascular equipment! There are many courses and qualifications in the fitness industry that will further your knowledge and enable you to become a highly skilled fitness professional. 58
WWW.PTMAGAZINE.CO.UK
The Level 3 personal trainer qualification is your next step and completing this can open up many different routes for you to pursue. You can be employed by a gym or work self- employed in a gym or outside. Both of these options have advantages and disadvantages and it is sensible to go through each of them before making a decision. Below are a few points on each choice. Employed by a gym: Access to roughly 5000 members (depending on club size) You can usually have gym hours if you wish You will earn a wage and carry out personal training sessions on top of these which you will split earnings with the gym. It is sometimes a 50/50 split however it depends on the gym You are responsible for finding your own clients and marketing yourself. Clubs will try to help but ultimately it is down to you You will get holidays and sick pay Will usually have a certain amount of hours to work per month Freelance personal trainer: • Run your own business and work your own hours • Possible access to gym members. Some clubs allow personal trainers to carry out gym inductions
“PERSONAL TRAINING SHOULD BE FUN SO FIND WHAT YOU LIKE AND MAKE THE MOST OF IT!”
• If you freelance in a gym you can charge what you wish for personal training and the money is yours • You will pay a gym rent per month which varies club to club and by location. For example London rent will be more than Birmingham rent • You are responsible for your own taxes
BUT WHAT DOES IT ALL REALLY MEAN? People talk about being qualified in many different things but what does it mean they can do? What does the qualification allow someone to do and where will it lead them? What are the best pathways through the industry? We hear these questions time and time again and hope to dispel some of the confusion surrounding them within this article. Let’s start at the beginning with the Level 2 qualification Gym/Fitness Instructor, as this is your first step to entering the fitness industry. This qualification will allow you to work in a typical gym environment maintaining equipment, introducing new members to the gym floor and carrying out inductions to get them started. Level 2 Gym instructors will always be employed by clubs and be paid a wage. There is no freelance work involved.
• You will be responsible for driving your own clients and marketing yourself. Clubs will try to help but ultimately it is down to you • There is the possibility to earn more money as you will keep any money you earn over the amount of your gym rent Personal Training should be fun so find what you like and what will advance your career and make the most of it! There are many routes you can go down, below are some of the courses you can complete that further assist in developing your career. Level 3 GP and Exercise Referral – this qualification greater enables you to work with special populations in the fitness industry. This will allow you to train people who have injuries or certain illnesses such as osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s or mental illness’s and have been referred to you by a doctor. This qualification will allow you to
set up referral schemes with doctors and GP surgeries where they will refer patients to you. GP and Exercise referral is also the pre-requisite for all level 4 courses. Level 4 Lower Back Pain – This will allow you to work with people with particular back pain problems where you can set up similar schemes to the GP Referral scheme. Level 4 Obesity and Diabetes – This course allows you to work with overweight or obese clients and understand the impact obesity has on exercise and daily life. These clients can either be referred from the doctor or already be members of the club and want to lose weight. If you achieve level 4 status through one of these qualifications then you will be one of the few in the industry that has achieved this status. The level 4 courses take a lot of time and hard work but they are achievable by anyone who is willing to work hard and is passionate about the industry. CONTINUED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) COURSES. What does this mean? You may have heard people speak of CPD courses or Continued Professional Development credits, these are designed to motivate fitness professionals to expand their knowledge in the industry and keep up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques. Since CPD points are required in order to be on the Register of Exercise Professionals, all REPs accredited courses will earn you CPD points. Therefore, it’s easy to find areas where you want to expand your knowledge and gain CPD credits for those courses. Typically these courses include Indoor cycling, Kettlebell Training, Suspension Training, Mixed Martial arts and Circuit training. WHICH PATH? When it comes to choosing the right path to take it is a decision that only you can make and varies from trainer to trainer, what works for one person may not work for the next. The advice we would give is you need to find out what your own unique selling point is and use your strengths to your advantage. The fitness industry is forever changing and the best information we can give is to build a solid base of qualifications that you are happy with and interests you, so when you do decide on a path you want to pursue, you can develop you career and business opportunities. If you are interested in any of the above courses please contact Discovery Learning on 0208 543 1017 or email amy@discovery.uk.com.

Affiliate Programme Opportunity with
The Fitness Travel Company We caught up with Rob Tynan, Founder and CEO of The Fitness Travel Company to find out more about the benefits to PTs of becoming an affiliate. THE FITNESS TRAVEL COMPANY HAS BEEN ATTRACTING A LOT OF ATTENTION IN THE MEDIA, WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM OTHER TRAVEL COMPANIES? We have several unique selling points, to name a few: 1) Our mantra: we provide people with the chance to have fun, explore new parts of the globe and experience cultures from a completely different perspective. 2) We offer a support network that creates a comfort blanket for those previously afraid or nervous of trying adventure holidays. 3) Our vision also makes us stand out. For example our elite trainers understand that we are about full transparency, we want what’s best for both them and for their clients.
the Kevin Richardson adventure... Both ways are an amazing way to build your reputation and book of business.
WHAT OTHER BENEFITS ARE THERE FOR PROFESSIONALS WHO SIGN UP TO THE AFFILIATE SCHEME?
THAT SOUNDS FANTASTIC, WHERE’S THE CATCH?
• We are working with Carl-Henrik Thorson of PURE LIFESTYLE who has built a mainframe system for Fitness pros to run their business backed up by a personalised app to monitor clients
It’s really not about catch, there are lots of companies already out there trying to bleed PTs, FTC is not like that... We are an adventure company who wish to tap into the existing knowledge and expertise of elite trainers. As I said, full transparency is better, we encourage our clients to build their reputation in the community by affiliating with charities, we offer sales training... It’s simple, as FTC grows the PT’s business grows. WHAT TYPE OF TRAINERS ARE YOU LOOKING TO WORK WITH ON THIS PROGRAMME? We are looking for level 3 and above, a positive outlook on life, must be a go getter, have travelled themselves and want to build their business.
• Higher commissions for referrals • Opportunities to receive new clients • Opportunities to travel • Sales training HOW CAN PTS SHOW THEIR INTEREST IF THEY WANT TO BECOME AN AFFILIATE? If they are interested please go to the home page scroll down and click on the affiliate button fill in the questionnaire and we can start process. It’s pretty simple. For more information please visit: www.fitnesstravelcompany.com
I’M SURE THAT THE FTC WOULD APPEAL TO A LOT OF PROFESSIONALS. ARE THERE ANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR PTS TO WORK WITH YOU WITHOUT GETTING ON A PLANE? Yes of course, most of our trainers love to be a part of our affiliate programme but ask not to travel. This just mean we pay them the affiliate travel agents commission for referrals. We have other elite trainers like Kevin Richardson in Manhattan in the USA who has over 200 of his own trainers and he only travels with his clients so we arrange everything for him and it becomes

R E K O O B T CA Personal Trainer
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PERSONAL TRAINER? To help people move better, train smarter to get results. I know what a massive difference a PT can make to technique, knowledge and ultimately, results. I started out as a group exercise instructor 19 years ago but I had a burning desire to help people on a oneto-one basis. Group training is great fun, but PT is on a different level. I think everyone should invest in it at some stage. HOW DO YOU MOTIVATE PEOPLE INTO GETTING, AND STAYING, FIT? I try to explain the reasons why I am getting them to do certain exercises and the results their workouts will help them achieve. Working with fun and innovative equipment like the Total Gym makes a big difference to motivation. When clients enjoy a workout they keep coming back for more! I also provide ‘little extras’ like text reminders, motivational tips and creative ideas around things like how to fix technique, as well as lots of praise!
WHEN YOU MEET A NEW CLIENT WHAT EVALUATIONS WOULD YOU DO TO DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE FITNESS PROGRAMME? I get them to complete a questionnaire and I do physical assessments. I have experience with bio-mechanics so am quickly able to identify how their chain of movement could be improved. We usually start by breaking this down to rebuild correct technique as this makes a huge difference to results. IF A CLIENT SUFFERS AN INJURY DURING A SESSION, HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT? I have never had anyone suffer an injury during a session, but I have to make adaptations for injuries or movement quality that they currently have. The Total Gym is a great tool for changing levels to suit someone with rehabilitation to sports training goals.
for many people is a sensitive point as they are in your hands and spending a reasonable amount of disposable income. The guidance they get is not just about the hour or less that they spend with a trainer. It is about them feeling they have backup and contact outside of that time if they need, and the support materials to help guide them in the right direction. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM PERSONAL TRAINERS FACE? I believe there is a place for personal trainers and there always will be, even in hard times. I think one of the biggest opportunities we have is the unparalleled level of service and attention we are able to give to clients. This is why small group training is really taking off too, making it more affordable for some clients. Staying current, and on our toes is vital, as client results shape our future.
WHAT MAKES YOU A SUCCESSFUL PT? IS IT TRAINING YOU’VE HAD, KIT YOU USE, OR IS IT SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY? A lot of success is down to experience, understanding that personal training
