TrendsVsFads A

s fitness professionals we are duty bound to follow our noses, our clients’ needs and to be constantly aware of the tides of change that occur within our industry to stay up-to-date with trends and patterns. As a result of this we should be casting our eyes across the fitness horizon and seeing what is currently working (the trends) and what is not (potential fads). The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annually reviews the health and fitness landscape, providing us with the current fitness trends worldwide and ensuring we as professionals are not wasting our time solely on flogging a potentially dead horse. As a personal trainer, group fitness instructor and business consultant I need to be aware of the market. Making the wrong call as a trainer may mean less participants in a class, but making the wrong call as a consultant could cost someone’s business tens of thousands of pounds and your reputation. The list is not to be considered a ‘to-do’ list, but an opportunity to gauge what you are currently doing and increase your potential to grow financially both in the short term and the long term. A large number of trainers are not entirely comfortable with business development side and so by analysing their existing skill-set alongside the needs of the market they should be in a better position to increase their revenue.

Current trends for 2013 already show that the market wants more qualified and experienced trainers leading the way and this underlines why there has been much debate about unqualified instructors leading group fitness classes. The report

THE MARKET WANTS MORE QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED TRAINERS LEADING THE WAY has also pointed towards a small step away from equipment led classes and towards more bodyweight inspired workouts (i.e Armageddon, Insanity, etc) that incorporate core, functional and weight loss training methods to achieve an end result. The common denominator between these types of classes is that they are often devised to accommodate a range of ages/levels and therefore it enables greater participation at the older and younger ends of the market. Personal training specifically has cemented itself into the top ten and has now become a firm foundation of fitness and a product that more health clubs/gyms should be investing in because of its direct ability to affect member retention, reduce staff attrition and increase revenue across the board. So, in short, you need to know how the land lies so that you can validate your position,

follow trends as they occur and minimise the risk of wasting time/money developing your skills in areas that may shortly be construed as a fad. For the foreseeable future we have a plan, it involves us professionals using both complex equipment and simple bodyweight, it means affecting a wide range of people in groups and it is all about getting results. The below is taken from the ACSM definitive list and for more information you should take a look at the full listing at: www.acsm.org The top ten fitness trends predicted for 2013 are: 1. Educated, Certified and Experienced Fitness Professionals 2. Strength Training 3. Body Weight Training - (New on the list) 4. Children and Obesity 5. Exercise and Weight Loss 6. Fitness Programs for Older Adults 7. Personal Training 8. Functional Fitness 9. Core Training 10. Group Personal Training

Protect Now or Potentially Pay Later The experts from insure4sport ® explain why it is absolutely crucial for all Personal Trainers and Fitness Instructors to get insurance cover. As a Personal Trainer you need to provide training advice and care for all clients. The safety of clients is paramount, but the unfortunate fact of life is that accidents do happen. Although you may not be specifically at fault and you may have taken steps to mitigate the chances of accidents, the injured client may wish to pursue a claim for compensation, in which case you could be liable to pay costly legal fees and damages. In some extraordinary cases, there may not have even been an incident in which you were involved that you can end up paying for. One such case in point happened when a client allegedly injured her back during a session with her Personal Trainer. The injury was not reported during the session and the client went on to complete more work in the gym after the training session. The client had a previous back problem, and thus the training plan had been devised, with the advice of her doctor too, to strengthen her back. The client brought an injury claim against her trainer which went to court. During the hearing, the evidence from the Personal Trainer was found to contain one small error, about the date a disclaimer was signed, and therefore the judge decided all evidence could be flawed and found in favour of the client. The damages and legal fees awarded totalled £52,800. Luckily, in this case, the Personal Trainer was insured so the costs were covered. However, if the Trainer had not been insured, this individual would have had to pay that substantial sum himself. How would that impact on you? All Personal Trainers need to be covered for at least Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance to protect yourself and your business. Public Liability insurance covers you for any damage or legal costs arising from third party bodily injury or third party property damage. For example, if someone under your tuition injured themselves and brings a claim for compensation against you, then you would be covered under Public Liability. Professional Indemnity insurance covers you for breaches of professional duty as a result of negligent acts, errors or omissions – in other words, will insure you against any errors you make as a Personal Trainer. For example, if your coaching techniques were questioned when a client suffered an injury resulting from your advice, then you would be covered under Professional Indemnity. There are several difference types of cover available, that vary dependent on monetary value of cover and how many different eventualities you are covered for. One company aiming to do something different is insure4sport ® with their specialist fixed price policies. Policies are incepted and maintained online and customers can build policies on the website to suit their own individual requirements. Policies can also be updated, upgraded or renewed online – making things as easy as possible for Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers. Plus all insure4sport ® Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor policies come with an exclusive 10% discount for PT magazine readers.

CARVING OUT A

PT NICHE A

t a time where the fitness industry is becoming more sophisticated and segmented, is it prudent to apply the same approach to your personal training business? Whether it’s specialist spinning studios, no frills budget gyms or crossfit boxes, the fitness consumer now is faced with so much more choice than the generic one size fits all gym chain that once dominated the market. A PT needs to differentiate themselves from other trainers. Price is one way of separating yourself, but continually slashing hourly rate tends to be a race to the bottom and should be avoided unless you’re prepared to work for peanuts. There will always be someone with a cheaper offering and you have to be happy with the amount of money you’re getting each hour if you’re to offer a great service. Specialising in a specific form of training or working with a particular group is the best way to establish a point of difference between you and your competitors. The formula here is relatively simple; find something you’re passionate about and enjoy, then do all you can to be the best at delivering training in that field. Newly qualified trainers may struggle to find a specialism because even the best PT qualifications won’t cover every single facet

of training. They will however, give you the skills to be able to understand various forms of training and equipment so you can make an informed choice as to what will work best for you. Try to experience all of the different forms of training firsthand, read as much as you can and determine what appeals to you most. This is going to be the thing that you hang your hat on for a while so you have to enjoy doing it.

PICK SOMETHING THAT WORKS WITH YOUR INTERESTS AND PASSIONS, SO YOU’LL ENJOY TRAINING EVERY CLIENT There’s no sense in trying to turn yourself into an army-style drill sergeant and set up your own military bootcamps if your personality doesn’t fit that mould. You’ll struggle to be the best in that area and over time your motivation will wane. Pick something that works with your interests and passions, so you’ll enjoy training every client. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel and come up with your own hybrid form of training, you just need to own a particular space in the market. This could

be working with a specific sport such as golf, specialising in a piece of equipment such as kettlebells, or working with clinical populations or young people. Invest in yourself to make sure you are, and remain to be, the authority on that form of training. This puts you in a position of strength and enables you to justify your hourly rate. Set aside a CPD budget to keep your skills and knowledge relevant, and don’t be afraid to increase your prices to reflect the benefits of this additional experience. Education is at the heart of being the best. Learning from and working with the most knowledgeable and eminent practitioners is the best way to develop your skills. The Physical Company (www.physicalcompany. co.uk) offer their own training series for instructors to compliment each piece of equipment they sell. Once that training has been completed, don’t stop there. Put a date in your diary to update or refresh these skills by attending seminars or taking additional courses. Give yourself an identity and ensure this is clearly visible in all your marketing and promotional material. You’ll stand out from all the other PT’s in the area and take more enjoyment out of your job.

JUST BE BETTER W

orking for several large brands in the industry, one of the main differences between who they choose to work with and who they don’t, comes down to the ‘degree of difficulty’ factor. If people are perceived as being too difficult to deal with or can’t represent themselves in a way that befits, how can they be expected to carry the weight of a major brand? I’ve spoken before about you being your own brand and everything either directly or indirectly pointing to you as a trainer and person. You aren’t just the sum of your client programming and member relationships. Like any other job or profession, it’s just as much about ‘who’ you are as it is about ‘what’ you do that guarantees longevity. To put it plainly, you have to be likeable in addition to being educated. There are a lot of trainers looking for career progression and taking those ‘next steps’. It’s important for you to know that companies aren’t interested in just a hot trainer with a few good ideas; they’re looking for a complete package right from the outset. They’re too busy in their own roles and running their own companies to have to worry about baby-sitting people who underperform or need constant reminders or rebuking. If you want to succeed, just be better.

I’ve known of people being passed up for major job opportunities because of their illiterate emails, tardiness at replying to communication, lack of awareness as to who they’re addressing and the tone they use in communications. Any of these warning signs can easily be interpreted (either rightly or wrongly) into a bigger picture that assumes the person would

YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER WHO YOU ARE AND HOW YOU WANT TO BE PERCEIVED BY OTHERS never be able to write a manual that would make the grade, or have the eye for detail to ensure a high quality product or programme. It also translates that in times of urgency, a response would not be likely forthcoming and when it does come, it’s dismissive and/or lacks details. Too hard – next person. Most people will buy into who you are as a trainer. That’s the easy part. If you want a long term career in the fitness industry that moves beyond personal training, you have to consider who you are and how you want to be perceived by others. Here are a couple of things that might help bridge the gap:

by Greg Sellar

Don’t trash-talk other products or programmes – they’re in business and believe they have a good thing going and it might be just your opinion that they don’t. Answer your emails in a timely manner and don’t start a conversation with those immortal words, “sorry, I got your email but I just haven’t had time to reply”. Write your emails with proper sentence structure, grammar and spelling. When talking to company representatives, be sure to acknowledge that they know their products and programmes better than you and that you are interested in learning from them – trainers can be too quick to volunteer their own opinion as gospel, when it might sit at odds to a company ethos or policy. Remember “you’re on before you’re on” – it’s how you carry yourself in conversation, in dress and in relation to those around you. A bad attitude, lack of enthusiasm and combative tone will have companies running a mile in the opposite direction. At the end of the day it is simple. Just be better.

Building the

Perfect Bottom T

here are lots of men and women looking to sculpt their derrière into the perfect bottom, so the two questions that arise are (1) What is the perfect bottom? (2) What exercises will help me build it? WAIST:HIP RATIO Waist:Hip ratio (WHR) is the ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of the hips and can be an indicator or measure of the health of a person, linked with the risk of developing serious health conditions and even linked to perceived attractiveness. The World Health Organisation say that abdominal obesity is defined as a waist:hip ratio above 0.90 for males and above 0.85 for females, and that a score of 0.7 for women and 0.9 for men has been shown to correlate strongly with general health and fertility.

A WELL-PROPORTIONED WAIST AND HIP ARE MOST IMPORTANT MEASURE OF ATTRACTIVENESS Maybe of more interest than the health implications of a high WHR, is the fact that it may make you less attractive to the opposite sex. This idea was first proposed by evolutionary psychologist Devendra Singh at the University of Texas at Austin in 1993, who found the optimal 0.7 WHR for females in 2,500 year old sculptures of the Roman Goddess of Love and Beauty in Europe and Asia. Although there may be some regional variation based on geographical preferences (0.6 for China, South America, and some of Africa, or 0.8 in Cameroon and Tanzania), normal body fat distribution and a 0.7 WHR were associated with being most attractive, sexy, intelligent and healthy (regardless of breast size), whilst a lower WHR as only associated with youthfulness. Simply put, for females a well-proportioned waist and hip are most important, whereas for men the focus should be also developing broad shoulders to complement the optimal waist and hip circumferences. So what are some of the best exercises for developing the ideal hip part of the WHR?

Perfect Bottom Exercises

The following exercises are some of the best for developing a perfect behind:

KETTLEBELL SWING This is a continuous, dynamic exercise that works the hamstrings, glutes and back musculature Take hold of an appropriate weight Kettlebell with 2 hands (usually 12-16kg or more for a female, and 16-20kg or more for a male) Limit the knee bend by keeping the shins vertical and swing the kettlebell between the legs Thrust the hips forward until the body is vertical and squeeze the glutes at the top (imagine you are holding a £20 note between your cheeks) to ensure maximal glute contraction Perform multiple sets lasting from 20-60s (for longer sets use a slightly lighter kettlebell and slightly heavier kettlebells for shorter sets).

BARBELL ROMANIAN DEADLIFT This is a slower, strength-based exercise that works the hamstrings, glutes and back musculature. Take hold of an appropriate barbell with 2 hands (should be the weight suitable for sets of 10-12 repetitions) and stand upright. Limit the knee bend by keeping the shins vertical and lower the bar down to mid-lower shin level. Pause briefly then push the hips forward and tighten the glutes again, repeat for 10-12 reps until failure and for 2-4 sets.

HOW TO GET 3 NEW CLIENTS

IN THE NEXT 30 DAYS

T

he first thing I do when a client asks me “What do I need to do to get 3 new clients in the next 30 days?” is I ask “Why do you actually want 3 more clients right now?” More often than not the response is “Because I need to make more money”.

2/ Increase frequency - Invite your clients to train more often with you. If you don’t have time to fit in more sessions consider doing support phone calls in between workouts instead or adding nutritional plans or home workouts.

So let’s look at this in a different way. If what you really want is to make more money then you probably don’t even need more clients. Instead, think first of all about your existing clients. They are the people most ready and willing to spend more money with you because they already trust you, they already pay you and they already know you are good at what you do. It’s much harder to get someone to start paying you than it is to get someone already paying you to spend more with you.

Whatever you need to do to help them achieve their goal more quickly, just offer it to them. You’ll be amazed at how many of your clients (who you thought had no money) will say yes simply because you asked them and explained how it would benefit them if they did.

THE FASTEST WAY TO PICK UP NEW CLIENTS IS ALWAYS FACE TO FACE CONTACT Two ways of doing this are: 1/ Increase your prices - Did you know over 30% of your current clients would happily pay you up to 50% more than they are now for your services? I know this because I’ve worked with over 500 trainers and seen it happen over 500 times. Tell your current clients you are increasing your prices ( just by 10-20% to start with) and you’ll see more than 85% of them stick around and have no issue with it. That’s an immediate pay rise for you.

Now on to those 3 new clients (if you still want them now) in 30 days. The fastest way to pick up new clients is always face to face contact. You HAVE to actually get out and talk to people, and they’ll be glad to hear from you if you can help them. So start by writing a list of where your ideal clients are already hanging out, then approach the owners of those shops, services and places to ask if they want to help you offer free sessions, free talks or free body assessments to their customers. Don’t worry if you get rejected at first, just move onto the next shop or service. Someone will say yes if you persist. The “free” part is the key. Don’t go out and expect to sell to people straight away. Offer them something for free, do a great job, win their trust and then tell them about what you do. Two shops or services promoting your free offer should get you

4-12 enquiries in 30 days. You only need 3 of them to say yes to working with you after they’ve had their freebie and you’re there. It really is that simple. The reason why it doesn’t work for most people? Because they don’t actually go out and do it. They say they will, or they start it but they never actually finish it. Go out and do it, be brave, be persistent and I guarantee you’ll have your 3 new clients within the month.

IT’S NOT A FAD… IT’S A W

ith the ever increasing competition in the PT market place, how do you set yourself apart from the rest? This is a question that we get asked quite a lot and is something that we discuss with many training providers in the UK. Following on from the June issue, we wanted to take a closer look at a licensed fitness programs and get up close and personal with one of our favorites. Designed to get your clients hearts racing and provide you with the marketing and business support you need to make it a success, Armageddon Fitness was born. Crafted by Richard Callender back in 2008, the aim was to take a step back to the future and take clients deeper into the world of VIIT© (Variable Intensity Interval Training). “I wanted to target speed, strength and stamina but without the limitations of equipment” Richard explains, “and so Armageddon was born. Over the years I have taught sessions to all types of people; elite athletes, students, the military, severely deconditioned individuals and everyone in between and I am yet to

teach the same session twice because Armageddon is constantly evolving and I am constantly learning...” Armageddon is a fast paced, variable intensity group fitness and personal training concept for people of all levels and led by certified fitness professionals. It is

based around a circuit framework, carefully designed to encourage development in your fitness and aids in both fat loss and muscular improvement. The class is a mixture of group fitness VIIT©, innovative component design solely based upon body weight and a unique blend of intensity levels that encourage fast results and continuous progression. Armageddon is not a bootcamp, it is not merely a circuit

training class, it is results based variable intensity training for everyone. The concept has been a huge underground success around the UK for the past few years with’ creator, Richard Callender, eventually taking it onto our screens as part of his intensive and effective training regime on ITV1s The Biggest Loser. What has made the concept such a success is the original blend between functional fitness training, a pulsating soundtrack, and high levels of fitness instruction and motivation. One of the most important aspects about Armageddon is that it has been devised to effectively train participants regardless of age, sex or ability, and allows the instructor the freedom to utilise their own experience and skills whilst creating a fun, dynamic exercise environment. Armageddon instructors believe that by helping people out of their comfort zone, training them at a level higher than they are accustomed to, and using their combined wealth of fitness knowledge, they can create a fitness session that is effective, addictive and fun for everyone.

DISCIPLINE… Armageddon is personal training in a group fitness environment. Another reason that makes Armageddon uniquely different is that they have created the Armageddon Intensity Matrix - AIM, (Launching soon!) to work alongside the

ARMAGEDDON IS THE FAST PACED, VARIABLE INTENSITY GROUP FITNESS AND PERSONAL TRAINING CONCEPT FOR PEOPLE OF ALL LEVELS class. This enables participants worldwide to monitor their progress, see their fitness levels improve and grade themselves according to their ability to complete specific workouts. The Armageddon Team have created a range of workouts that can be performed at home, at work or the gym and means, unlike many other group fitness classes, the motivation isn’t only to complete the class…it’s to take control of your body. Burn calories, develop lean muscle, improve your clients’ health and fine tune their fitness in an Armageddon session!

BECOME AN ARMAGEDDON TRAINER + BE THE DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE You might be someone who trains the next elite athlete, shows a client the way to better health, helps a stranger to lose a phenomenal amount of weight and you might be even be the person that makes a real difference to someone’s health. While there are no guarantees, we do believe that by showing you how to run successful Armageddon classes we can help you to create innovative training sessions, provoke thoughtful debate, develop your skills to become role models and help make fitness fun and functional to thousands. The Armageddon class/training concept is designed for you if you are one or more of the following outlined below: An existing fitness professional who wants to offer a mixed intensity, results based workout to your class repertoire that displays your ability to train, adapt and prescribe exercises to both the general public and other sport/exercise skill sets. A health club/fitness operator who is seeking to increase the quantity and quality of their existing class schedule without the continual outlay usually associated with licenses and to offer an exciting new class that caters for the mass market. New instructors to the industry trying to develop their own training style, improve their knowledge and create their own identity whilst not wanting to follow a similar path to everyone else. A sportsperson or athlete wanting to incorporate their training techniques and regime into a controlled class environment to develop a training workout appropriate to their given sport or activity, that may aid in the progression of other participants. The one day ARMAGEDDON INSTRUCTOR TRAINING COURSE costs only £165. With no monthly licensing fees to pay, Armageddon offers you a great service, fantastic support and a brand that you are going to want to be associated with. SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY Equipment that you can build an entire studio around comes at a price, but can the returns justify the investment?

GRAVITY Training on Total Gym equipment

HOW DOES IT WORK? No external weights, no springs, no electronics, the Total Gym harnesses the user’s own bodyweight to provide resistance, hence the name of the programming: GRAVITY. This one piece of

20

kit gives you the full range of resistance exercises offered at a full scale gym with tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of weight machines, plus the full Pilates Reformer repertoire. WHAT DOES A WORKOUT CONSIST OF? There is programming available for High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Pilates, strength and conditioning, sports specific and post rehab. 1to1 sessions offer a huge amount of scope for creative and specially designed routines to match the client’s goals, while small group training allows people of different abilities to take part in the same class, simply altering resistance to match their level. WHO DOES IT APPEAL TO? GRAVITY has general appeal for weight loss clients, offering resistance training without the bodybuilder image. If you train clients for sports performance this could

be a good option as the equipment allows resistance to be added to countless sports specific exercises. HOW MUCH? One Total Gym GTS unit costs £2,875 + VAT, and GRAVITY Foundation courses cost £305. There are regular programming update courses with REPS points from £45 per course to keep your workouts up to date. Group sessions are usually charged between £10 and £20 so most GRAVITY studios start giving a healthy return in just six months, while just ten 1to1 personal training sessions per week at £60 each would mean the kit pays for itself in just six weeks. Go to www.gravityuk.net or call 01494 458 970 to find out more about the Total Gym equipment and GRAVITY programming.

WHAT DOES A WORKOUT CONSIST OF? Group workouts on X-Lab revolve around the Cyclone Training programming. The concept involves devising circuits around the equipment based on the layout of the stations. Exercisers move to the left after performing a drill at each station, thus creating a ‘cyclone’ effect as they move around the rig. The trainer has a lot of scope to design different classes based on their individual strengths and interests, as well as creating different sessions for different types of client. WHO DOES IT APPEAL TO? Functional training is a major fitness trend and has crossed over into the mainstream, this isn’t just something that appeals to super energetic 18-30s. Strength, conditioning and fat loss results are quick, and with a few classes at different intensities all ages and abilities can be catered for. HOW MUCH? The X-Lab 1.3S configuration costs £4,581.20 plus VAT, with individual training stations starting at £115.95 plus VAT. A fully operational functional X-Lab training rig with all the stations needed for the 1.3S comes in under £6000 plus VAT. Add to that all the kettlebells, med balls, suspension trainers and other accessories and the bill could come out around £7000 plus VAT. At £10 per class, with six people in each class, seven full classes per week would see £10k income in from group sessions alone, paying for the cost of the equipment and generating profits in just six months. Add in additional classes and 1to1 clients, or raise the modest price point, and this functional kit could lend some very functional finances to your business on a very manageable timescale.

X-Lab HOW DOES IT WORK? X-Lab, from US based Torque Fitness, is probably the most scalable and customisable rig on the market - a simple modular system that gives you 15 standard configurations to choose from, to match the space you have to work with. Up to six people can train on the 1.3S configuration at a time. Once you’ve selected the configuration you can choose from a comprehensive range of attachments and exercise stations.

Physical Company is the sole distributor of the X-Lab in the UK, and will bundle the rig, stations and additional kit requirements into a tailor made package for your studio. Investment in the 1.3S configuration or above also means you can receive the Cyclone Training instructor education free of charge. Go to www.physicalcompany. co.uk for more information.

vibrations per second, creating an unstable surface. This destabilisation triggers reflexive muscle contractions and positive hormonal benefits. WHAT DOES A WORKOUT CONSIST OF? Push-ups, squats, lunges, abdominal exercises and any other traditional exercise which can be done on the ground can be done on Power Plate’s vibrating platform, with the added benefit of extra muscle fibre recruitment and enhanced results. Each machine comes with a set of straps which can be attached for extra movements, opening up a range of sports specific and functional, full body exercises. WHO DOES IT APPEAL TO? Power Plate appeals to anyone desiring improved overall physical health. The hormonal responses caused by destabilisation, in addition to the recruitment of extra muscle fibres, result in more toning, conditioning and fat loss, in less time. Combined, these become a USP that appeals to those who need to squeeze exercise into a busy schedule. Sessions can be geared towards seasonal shape-ups, fat burning and low-impact workouts as well as sports specific angles for improving performance, flexibility and injury prevention. HOW MUCH? The Power Plate pro5, the mid-range commercial model, costs £7,495 inc VAT. The ability to add value in terms of quicker results to PT sessions means you can justify higher hourly rates. If you charged £10 per session more than your standard 1to1 rate and set that aside to cover the investment cost, you would only need to sell 60 sessions per month to make back the equipment outlay in a year, without touching your existing income. To view the full range of Power Plate models available and contact the sales team visit www.powerplate.com/uk

Power Plate HOW DOES IT WORK? Power Plate machines use a vibrating platform to amplify the effects of any exercise performed. The vibration is provided through harmonic waves - a consistent, controlled level of vibration that moves the plate up and down, forward and back and left to right. The platform produces 25 to 50

Dear Christianne, I have just started out in the world of personal training and my client base is quite small. Through speaking with other PT’s, if I am not in a gym getting clients it’s going to be hard to grow my business unless I have a small fortune to spend on a local advertising campaign, which currently I don’t, so my question is how to get in the papers, magazines, TV and radio fast?

Hungry like the Wolff Each issue our resident celebrity trainer (and agony Aunt) Christianne Wolff, will answer all your questions on the best way to get into the local and national press, and how to get that all important first celebrity client. You can also find Christianne at www.celebritytrainercoach. com where she is a media coach and PR agent for fitness professionals.

Christianne Wolff is the go to celebrity trainer coach, that helps fit pros go from local business to national stardom. She has appeared in over 50 national magazines, was the first female columnist for Mens Fitness, has trained A list celebrities on film sets and gained sponsorships and TV deals. Her clients get articles and exposure in the national press, and regular radio and TV appearances, plus book deals. She helps them build their brand to a national and global arena, where their dreams come true! Hi Claire, thanks for getting in touch. I have had several PT’s ask me a similar question, it’s very hard when you start out to build that initial base of repeat customers. Here are my 5 top ways to get coverage fast. 1) Check out the news everyday and if there is a story you can relate to your own or comment on, jump on it straight awaymy clients do this all the time and this is the top way they get into the national press. 2) Think laterally- how can you angle your story to suit the press? Be a little creative and savvy- editors want a story, so create a story out of your clients or you. They may not want a normal weight loss story, they may want to know how exercise improved their life in another way- what angle can you add to your story? 3) Connect with Journalists on Twitter and Facebook, regularly, every day. Getting into the nationals is about creating relationships- this may take months but you will get there eventually. 4) Passion and mindset will get you results faster more than anything else. You don’t need years of experience- if you get good results and are passionate and strong willed, that is all you need- I promise you that! 5) Network! Speak to everyone- go out and have fun at celebrity bars or restaurants, blag your way into places- if you don’t get out there, how does anyone know about you? Good luck, and please do let me know how you get on.

MUSIC LICENCING all you need to know F

rom PPL to PRS, music licencing can be confusing. Add to that the recent changes in licencing for fitness clubs and it’s no wonder we’re all a bit confused about what we have to pay and when. We talk to Paul Glazby, Managing Director of Gym Symphonies (www.gymsymphonies. com), creators of original fitness music, to set the record straight. HOW DO THE RECENT CHANGES IN MUSIC LICENCING AFFECT INSTRUCTORS? On 1 May 2013 fitness centres, including gyms, health clubs and leisure centres, became responsible for holding a valid PPL licence for group exercise classes. Operators must now hold an annual licence which covers all exercise classes that use PPL’s recorded music. Instructors now only need to be individually licensed for any classes they teach in premises other than fitness centres, such as hired halls or community buildings. The new tariff is based on a fee of 95p per Exercise Class. There is a minimum annual fee of £47.50, which is the equivalent of 50 classes per year. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PPL & PRS? PRS and PPL licensing are two independent schemes that represent the interests of different rights holders for the use

28

Several companies provide cover versions of songs to remove PPL liability from the music. If you are buying PPL free music then you will not need a PPL licence to play these songs. These versions however, still require a PRS licence.

If you are playing Zumba Fitness music which has been provided to you by the official Zumba organisation via the Zumba Instructor Network (ZIN) then you will not need a licence. This music has been specially created for Zumba classes and is free from any royalties. If you are purchasing Zumba music from any other source, not affiliated with ZIN, then you will need to check if it contain PPL’s repertoire and therefore requires a licence. Gym Symphonies ‘Dance ’ sessions are suitable for use in Zumba, and other dance fitness classes and offer a licence free alternative.

CAN I FIND MUSIC WHICH IS FREE FROM ALL LICENCING?

DO I NEED A LICENCE FOR MY YOGA STUDIO?

To avoid paying PPL and PRS licence fees, which can add up to a hefty sum over a 12 month period, instructors have the choice to buy licence free music. This music has been created specifically for use in an exercise class and the company selling the music will own the rights so the tracks remain licence free. Gym Symphonies sells licence free music for a variety of popular workouts including group cycling, dancefitness, MMA, mind & body classes and bootcamps.

According to ukactive, an activity or class is considered ‘Exercise to Music’ both if the music specifically directs, aids or motivates the activity or if the music is deliberately selected to accompany the activity. If you are playing music during a yoga class to help participants to relax, or to set the mood for the session then the class is considered ‘Exercise to Music’ and will require a licence. The Serenity range of music from Gym Symphonies is ideally suited to yoga, as well as other mind and body classes such as Pilates.

of recorded and live music in public performances. PPL is collected on behalf of the record companies and the performers while PRS is collected on behalf of the song writers, composers and publishers. AM I EXEMPT FROM NEEDING A LICENCE IF I ONLY PLAY COVER VERSIONS?

DO I LICENCE TO TEACH ZUMBA CLASSES IN MY LOCAL COMMUNITY HALL?

ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS

DO THEY ADD UP? A

dvanced Learning Loans are a brand new initiative designed to encourage more people into Further Education. Up until now, unlike Higher Education, you always had to pay for FE training courses up-front. With the Advanced Learning Loan, just like university tuition fees, you have the option to take out a loan and pay back later. It’s even administrated by the same people, Student Finance England. So, if you are starting a course anytime between August 2013 and 31 July 2014 you should consider applying. Don’t forget though, this is a loan not a grant meaning it is money that has to be repaid, not that many people will be deterred by this because the repayment terms are extremely attractive. You only start to repay the loan once you have finished your training and are earning over £21,000. The theory being that as a qualified individual, you are more likely to get a well paid job, enabling you to pay off your debt. SO, WHO CAN APPLY AND FOR WHAT? The main criteria are that you are at least 24 years old, have lived in England, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the past 3 years and you are enrolling on a Level 3 or above course with a training provider that is approved for public funding. In our case we offer a wide range of qualifying courses from our popular Personal Trainer Certificate to specialist Diplomas in Sports Massage, Nutrition and Weight Management, Outdoor Fitness Coach, Older Adult Fitness and many more. For our full range of eligible courses go to www.focus-training.com/course)

The short answer is ‘yes’. Advanced Learning loans are Government sponsored loans that work in pretty much the same way as loans for university fees. Still, as with any loan, you need to know what you are getting into before you commit, so we’ve asked Bob Ellis, MD of leading health and fitness training provider, Focus Training, to tell us more.

When you have chosen your course, ask your training provider for a ‘Learning and funding information’ letter. You will need this to make your online application for a loan. For more information and to apply go to www.gov.uk/advanced-learningloans. You should hear if you have been successful within two weeks and the money is transferred to the training provider once they confirm your attendance on the course. HOW MUCH CAN I BORROW? Borrow from £300 upwards depending on the cost of your chosen course and whether you borrow all or part of the tuition costs. Remember, borrowing always comes at a cost, and in this case the interest rate is linked to the rate of inflation and never more than the Retail Price Index plus 3%. Only when you start earning more than £21,000 will you have to pay back 9% of earnings above that threshold. For example, earn £25,000 pa and you’ll be paying back just £30 per month. With the right qualifications, and now this financial support to help you get them, there is nothing stopping you enjoying a prosperous career as a Personal Trainer. Even so, there is a final safety net in place, should you still owe all or part of the loan in 30 years time, your debt will be completely wiped clean. ‘VIRTUAL CLASSROOM’ PROVIDES THE KEY FOR VISUAL LEARNERS With around 65% of individuals who are predominantly visual learners, Focus Training, a leading provider of training to the health and fitness industry, has launched a new training tool specifically to support this very popular learning style. The ‘Virtual Classroom’ provides students with a pictorial guide to assist them, section by section, to complete their course. Focus Managing Director, Bob Eliis comments: “We understand the seven different learning styles and that people usually use a combination of them to receive and retain new information. The more support we can give our students, the better their learning experience, so the virtual classroom along with our comprehensive manuals and frequent tutor telephone support give Focus students a variety of support mechanism.” He continues, “When Napoleon Bonaparte coined the phrase ‘a picture is worth a 1000 words’ he probably had no idea why that is so often the case. Visual learners like using images, diagrams, colour and maps to organise information and understand new concepts. We can deliver all of this when they log into our virtual classroom.” The virtual classroom is available for all Level 2 qualifications and Level 3 Personal Trainer and Exercise Referral qualifications. ith the demand on PT’s time ever increasing, that all important profit can seem slightly out of reach. We speak with many PT’s who are looking for ways to maximise their earning potential but are stuck in a rut as there are just not enough hours in the day. One option that is becoming more commonplace is the affiliate scheme. Simply put, companies pay you a percentage of the sale price for an item that you sell on their behalf. All you need to do is present the product to your clients as a solution to their needs. Now fear not, you don’t have to sell your soul and promote products or a brand that you don’t want to, after all that’s no good to any one! Your clients would soon lose trust in your word and you would do more harm than good to your business. However, there are some fantastic options on the market, you just need to look and chose ones that are right for you. One of our new favourites comes from Monster Supplements. Launched just last month, the scheme allows you to monetise your websites, promote high quality products from a range of well-known brands to your clients safe in the knowledge that they won’t just get a tub of saw dust! The Monster Supplements Partner Scheme is offered directly, with no middle man. This means they can offer a better quality service to other affiliates, and provide you with even more marketing tools to help make the best out of your partnership. Apart from being the UK’s No.1 Sport Supplements Retailer, we give you the

power to enhance the monetisation of your website, not just though advertising banners, but a whole host of additional materials to realise the potential of your partnership. SO WHAT’S ON OFFER? Monster Supplements’ Partner Programme offers a wealth of features, including tiered commissions and more. Here’s what they offer as standard: • 5% Commission on ALL sales • Commissions paid once per month • Low pay out rate of £100 • Huge creative section featuring page peels, email marketing, PDF docs, text links and ads, banner ads and more • Industry Leading tiered commission structure – earn up to 12% per sale! • Dedicated Account Manager

CONQUERING YOUR FEAR OF FAT!

One client’s journey to eat the food she loves. By Ioanna Karelia

F

at. That demon! Babies, stop drinking your mother’s milk. Japanese, cut down on the sashimi. Mediterraneans, no more extra virgin olive oil for you. French, the words butter, liver, cheese and eggs should be words unknown to you. As for the coconut, avocado and nut butters, they should be banned. Eat them and coronary artery disease or even premature death will be around the corner they say. Dieters, too much fat, too little calories. Better replace that full fat yoghurt of yours with a low fat version full of sugar and cook not with butter or coconut oil but with margarine, the mother of hydrogenated oil. This way you will save on precious calories and lose weight. Have you ever caught yourself fearing fat because you thought it puts your health at risk or is caloric dense and will ruin your calorie counting diet? I have. How many times have we been told that the consumption of fat, especially that of saturated fat, increases total and LDL cholesterol and consequently the risk of cardiovascular disease. How many times have we been told that the consumption of fat is to blame for the obesity epidemic that has spiraled out of control. Not to mention the number of times we have been about to run out of calories and we feared to eat fat because its value in our tracking app would turn red.

Scientific findings however, show that we need not fear fat. Studies that support low fat diets have been in the centre of critique since the 1970s. The supposed dangers of saturated fat have been characterized as “the matter of fact acceptance of a phenomenon that may

LOW FAT DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS SHOULD BE RE-EXAMINED

not exist” and the methodology of such studies has been questioned. Moreover, contemporary studies have shown that the adverse effects associated with saturated fats in the past are due to other factors instead and suggest that low fat dietary recommendations should be re-examined. The evidence linking saturated fats to an increased risk of cardiovascular

disease is not significant, and with regards to weight loss, the right kind of high fat diet could actually boost fat oxidation, as in the case of fish oil supplementation. It is time to conquer our fear of fat and start eating the food we love. Benefits of fat consumption include better absorption of fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and minerals, better hormone production and a concentrated source of energy to name but a few. Delete your calorie counting apps because the sensory satiety experienced when eating fat regulates appetite. Conquer your fear of fat and say goodbye to austere cuisine.

BLISTERS

ACHES + NIGGLES

A GUIDE TO RUNNING INJURY PREVENTION

H

ow many of your clients run or jog on a regular basis…and how many clients have cancelled a session with you due to a running injury? The surging popularity of 5k, 10k, half and full marathons is hard to ignore as newbie exercisers seek ever tougher challenges, diving headlong into intense training regimes. Attention to form and strengthening exercises are essential, but there is some clever kit out there that can help make blisters, aching arches and niggling pain a thing of the past.

42

PROBLEM: ACHING ARCHES ‘Flat Feet’, plantar fasciitis and aching arches are the bane of many runners’ lives. What starts out as ‘just a niggle’ and a little tenderness can quickly escalate into excruciating, chronic problems. People who are predisposed to plantar fasciitis often find adding extra mileage when training for a race triggers the pain/discomfort. Expert View “Prevention is better than cure when it comes to conditions associated to Biomechanical dysfunction such as plantar fasciitis,” warns Andrew Stanley (Podiatrist and running Biomechanics Specialist at The Rebound Clinic). “If you don’t address the cause of the problem, it can escalate to the point where walking, let alone running, is very painful. Once plantar fasciitis has occurred it can take weeks or more likely months and sometimes years to fully recover if left unchecked. If you’re a keen runner, I’d suggest a dynamic gait analysis by a fully trained, experienced professional to determine if you’re prone to plantar fasciitis and/or many other biomechanical dysfunction problems. If so, you can take preventative action. The extra training mileage may already be taking its toll on your feet and legs. It may therefore be prudent to consult a podiatrist and invest in biomechanically designed support insoles that help maintain the arch and stabilise your foot. Whatever you do, don’t ignore it, it will only get worse!” Solution You need to restore the arch and support your entire foot from your toes to your heels. Stanley concedes that, “Not everyone can afford gait analysis and custom orthotics”. Ready-made “fixed” generic insoles aren’t always successful in preventing the problem. One possible solution comes in the form of mouldable insoles which adapt to fit the foot perfectly simply by wearing them in, such as SOLE’s Softec Response footbeds. The custom support gently holds your arch in its optimal position, but allows natural motion of the foot and prevents over-pronation which can lead to a range of conditions such as shin splints, knee pain and plantar fasciitis. The deep heel cup stabilizes your foot in the shoe and reinforces your heel’s natural shock-absorbing quality. An off-thepeg product, like the footbeds from SOLE, offer huge savings when compared to custom made inserts.

PROBLEM: INSUFFICIENT RECOVERY BETWEEN RUNS As your clients clock up the miles, their legs and feet are under increasing pressure. If they are running too frequently it can be difficult for their legs and feet to recover between sessions. Even with your training programme and advice on proper rest, the temptation to overtrain can play havoc with the client’s goals. So how can you encourage proper recovery? Expert view “Traditional flip flops, slippers and slouch socks create a very unstable platform on which to walk,” says Stanley. “This instability can lead to excessive foot motion resulting in foot, leg and even back pain, which is not conducive to assisting your recovery between runs. SOLE flips and recovery shoes are scientifically designed to support the heel and arch of the foot which stabilise the walking motion. This keeps the feet and legs in a more neutral, safe position reducing the stresses of walking, resulting in less stiffness, pain and tiredness after running.” Solution It may be tempting to pad about in socks or slippers when relaxing at home, but when training hard this is not advisable they give no support to the hard working muscles in the foot and lower leg. In fact, they can aggravate any tiredness or twinges by flattening out the arch of the foot and making the muscles work hard to keep you upright and balanced. Investing in a recovery shoe can go a long way to improving the effective rest time your clients’ feet get, encouraging muscle recovery without having to spend more time with their feet up. SOLE’s orthopaedic mouldable footbeds have been incorporated into a range of flip flops that give all the custom mouldable support of their footbeds built in to the flip flop platform. There is also a range of recovery shoes for those wanting warmer or waterproof options: again, they have the mouldable footbeds but also a warm fleecy lining and waterproof outer. If your clients slip into these bad boys after their seven day ultra-marathon challenge they’ll be so relieved they might even buy you a pair!

PROBLEM: BLISTERS Runners need to avoid blisters at all costs. Not only are they painful, but unless left to heal properly they can flare up again and again, interrupting their training programme, and your income. The first thing to check is that their shoes are a good fit and there is no uneven material or damage to the shoe that is causing the friction on the foot. If the shoes seem fine, then inspect the socks.

IF YOU DON’T ADDRESS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM, IT CAN ESCALATE

Expert view “Blisters really blight runners’ comfort yet can be an easy thing to prevent,” says Stanley, “Blisters are a result of excessive friction against the skin. Friction can be a result of ill-fitting, damaged shoes or socks that aren’t specifically designed for running,” he says. “If your shoes fit well and you wear double-layer, friction-reducing running socks, this will dramatically reduce the risk of skin blistering.” Solution A good pair of socks with a double fabric layer is a running essential, especially when increasing mileage or wearing in new shoes. SOLE’s Dual Layer socks, for example, have two layers of blended Tactel, Coolmax and Lycra to reduce friction on the skin and prevent blisters from developing. There is a TensorFit arch band that ensures the socks stay in place and stop them slipping and bunching. Seamless technology provides added comfort and further reduces the opportunities for the rubbing that leads to blisters. Wicking materials and mesh panels mean that, even with two layers, feet stay cool and dry. Choose fitness not fads

for long-term health

T

he hunger games of ‘crash’, fasting and fad dieting erroneously suggest that rapid weight loss is easy. Qualified fitness professionals know there’s no short cut to weight loss. We’re finding that professional personal trainers are being asked for ‘something that really works fast for losing weight’ – by the same people who have probably tried everything from the ‘Blood-Type’ diet to the recently popular ‘5:2’. As qualified fitness professionals, we recognise that the perceived infatuation with fad diets is resulting in a potentially dangerous, nation-wide reluctance to take long-term responsibility for fitness and overall health. Through the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), which regulates the fitness industry, professional trainers have the knowledge and experience to help educate clients about why fad diets will never replace the effective combination of regular exercise combined with a healthy balanced diet. Deep down, we all know the ‘quick fix’ weight loss ideas simply don’t work.

Although people can be tempted to try to get fast results, the NHS has stated that many fad diets are based on little or no research at all. REPs registered exercise professionals have the knowledge, qualifications and skills to guide and encourage their clients to confidently participate in safe exercises, and adopt a healthy eating regimen, to get the best results.

DEEP DOWN, WE ALL KNOW THE ‘QUICK FIX’ WEIGHT LTOSS IDEAS SIMPLY DON’T WORK There is no verified evidence that fad diets work in the long-term, nor can they be sustainable over a lifetime. The danger of such extreme diets has been highlighted over the past few years. Professor Chris Hawkey, President of The British Society of Gastroenterology, warned that “we need to do away with quirky diets and get people to realise what will keep them healthy in the long run.

Professional trainers have an increasingly important role in making sure that people can achieve long-term, sustainable overall fitness. As the nation’s obesity rates spiral, it is the qualified exercise professional who will be needed to show clients how to plan and follow a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime – not just a few weeks or months. As REPs qualified fitness professionals, we can ensure that all our clients exercise safely, and follow a healthy lifestyle that has lifelong benefits. A correctly supervised personal training programme combines regular exercise with appropriate calorie and fluid intake. And the exercise will even lower stress levels, as the levels of ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine become elevated following all that physical workout. It’s essential to give up on the false dream of rapid weight loss through fad diets. As fitness professionals, it is our role to encourage enthusiasm for regular exercise combined with a sensible diet, and show clients the long-term fitness benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

e all know that the benefits of following a challenging exercise regime can be very rewarding; if the correct programme is designed at the right intensity you can take your client to a level that they never knew existed. However this can also come at a cost, it is a very fine line between overloading your bodies’ threshold to achieve results and overworking it to an extent of chronic fatigue.

Overtraining syndrome (OTS) or ‘overstressing’ can occur if training intensity is excessive and there is insufficient recovery between sessions. However, it is difficult to say exactly what combination of training might be responsible. Two athletes following the same training regime can result in one of them suffering from OTS, whilst the other achieves a personal best Overload is the number one principle in any performance. What is good for your clients to have on their plate?

s you work with clients, you will soon learn a great deal about them and their outside commitments. You will know about their home life (partner, roommates, children, pets), job (what they do, who in in the office drives them nuts, what their true passion really is), and maybe even a little about their religious beliefs. Sometimes you will feel like a therapist as your client tells you all of their problems, or their hairdresser as you share the latest gossip about their friends. Good customer service skills that every personal trainer should have include listening and remembering what the client tells you to set up a rapport and demonstrate that you care about them as a person, not just a client. Keeping notes in their records and referring to them before the next time you meet will help you create a connection and sense of comfort. This personalized attention will set you apart from other personal trainers and help create a family-feeling between you and your clients, a tie that will be difficult to sever. These personal elements (career, relationships, spirituality), along with

regular fitness activity, make up the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN)’s meal plate. Based on the US Department of Agriculture’s ‘Choose My Plate’ campaign, it highlights the importance of incorporating relationships, career,

SOMETIMES YOU WILL FEEL LIKE A THERAPIST AS YOUR CLIENT TELLS YOU ALL OF THEIR PROBLEMS spirituality, and physical activity along with good eating and plenty of water to achieve health and happiness which is ultimately what every client is pursuing. They want to feel strong, healthy, and balanced in every aspect of their day from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed. If you can help them reach this ultimate goal, you will be one step ahead of your competition.

will allow the client to talk through their problem (whether it be in regards to diet, health, relationships, or career) and create their own solution. This provides them a sense of relief, control and empowerment by the end of your training session, as well as the physical fatigue from the full-body workout. Perhaps you can make one or two suggestions that will point them in the right direction to healing. If your client can balance life outside the gym, they will be happier and ready for you to present them with new challenges and achieve greater results.

Health coaching isn’t about directly solving anyone’s problems. Your primary job is listening, which you probably are already doing as a personal trainer. If you ask ‘high mileage’ (open-ended) questions this

S H T I F F I R G S JAME of Wild Training

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PERSONAL TRAINER? I wanted to work for myself and more than anything I wanted to do something that I could be proud of. I’ve learned how to lead a healthy lifestyle, and so far I’ve managed to help a lot of people do the same. The Wild Training franchise has also allowed me to help other fitness professionals develop successful careers which has been a really rewarding part of my journey. HOW IMPORTANT IS NUTRITION TO YOU? WILL YOU STRONGLY SUGGEST YOUR CLIENTS FOLLOW A BETTER DIET TO IMPROVE THEIR FITNESS GOALS? Always. If you ignore this you aren’t doing your job properly. I analyse where my clients are with their food intake and nutritional habits straight away. That way I get to see what we are working with and can prioritise the most important changes. That being said, asking people to change their nutritional habits is a lot more challenging than

getting them to do some proper exercise. This is why I developed a lifestyle coaching system called the Wild Journey for all the Wild Trainers to use with their clients. We help our clients step by step, making sure all the changes we recommend are easy and manageable. If it feels overwhelming, they won’t do it, and that won’t work so we have made it as easy as possible. No extremes. Proper food, eaten in a smart way. Simple. WHAT MAKES YOU A SUCCESSFUL PT? IS IT TRAINING YOU’VE HAD, KIT YOU USE, OR IS IT SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR PERSONALITY? I spent a lot more time than most trainers I have spoken to on training and studying. I started writing a blog early in my career that helped me challenge what I had learned and go out there and test things for myself. When I started experimenting with new equipment and being a bit more creative with my own training and programming, all my clients started getting better results, having more fun and training with me for longer and

longer. I don’t know what the average length of time a PT has a client for now, but nearly all of my clients have been with me over 2 years, and some as long as 5 years. They just enjoy it as part of their lifestyle. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM PERSONAL TRAINERS FACE? I think personal trainers have a hard time when they are new in to the industry. Going to work at a gym is tough as there are already established trainers that will get most of the new clients. When you aren’t confident this will slow your development down. The fact you don’t get paid very well either makes it hard for some trainers to keep motivation up. You need to look ahead in this industry and accept that you need to put in a whole lot of work to build a career that will give you a decent living. It’s worth all the effort.
