It’s hard to believe we’re already on the April issue, the year is flying by, and with so much happening in the industry we are entering an exciting time of growth in all fields. I would like to welcome Stephen Davies to our expert panel. He has written an intriguing piece for us this month on Digital Heath and the benefits of analysing clients on a micro-biotic level. As you know every client is different, and with Stephens help we hope you are able to add something special to your PT sessions (pg20). Richard Callender is also with us for his first PT column this month. Some of you may remember him from ITV’s the Biggest Loser, where he terrorised the contestants as the master trainer! Taking a break from a rather hectic year, Richard asks us all a question that should be on everyone’s mind when engaging with clients- “Why are we here” (pg13). We also take a look at fitness shows with Kristoph Thompson, who talks about the benefits are to attending and how there is something for everyone (pg15). Are you attending any shows this year? What has been your experience of industry shows in the past? We would love to hear your thoughts, please email fitshows@ptmagazine.co.uk From all of us here at PT Magazine, have a great April and we look forward to bringing you the next instalment in June. Stay Fit, Stay Happy and Stay Healthy

Short Sharp Sessions: The benefits of a

30 minute workout

T

he short fast training session is quickly becoming more of a usual occurrence in many health clubs. Previously every gym user was spending at least an hour in the gym and every class was scheduled for 60 minute duration. So what has changed? Well, for gym users there is significant research that shows that sessions lasting longer than sixty minutes can have a detrimental effect on your hormone levels, with elevated Cortisol (stress hormone) and subsequent suppression of your anabolic hormones. Both of these effects are the exact opposite to what most gym users are looking to achieve - reduction in body fat and maintenance of or increase in muscle mass. Shorter sessions are also associated with HIIT, or High Intensity Intermittent (or interval) Training. This type of training is receiving a lot of interest at the moment, with various research studies into the

10

www.ptmagazine.co.uk

benefits of short, hard intervals with rest periods in between. The aim of this training style is to improve anaerobic and aerobic fitness, glucose tolerance and insulin response (related to NIDDM), lipid profiles and even body fat reduction. This type of workout could include multiple sprints on a treadmill or bike, sets of kettlebell swings or even sled pushing or tyre dragging, but

“…there is significant research that shows that sessions lasting longer than sixty minutes can have a detrimental effect on your hormone levels” the idea is to perform these for 30-90s to illicit a build-up of lactic acid. This build-up is linked with challenging the individual’s anaerobic threshold and also with increases in (natural) growth hormone release. Many of the personal trainers that we work with at Jordan Fitness are now only training their clients for 45 minute periods, because

by Allan Collins

they physically cannot be trained this way for a full hour. Now many people running group training classes, such as the ones we help implement at the Klick Fitness Clubs, are realising that most gym users, if pushed hard, neither require, nor can actually tolerate, a full sixty minutes of this type of training. They are pushed within their abilities, and can achieve more benefits than plodding around a gym for an hour. Most users prefer to be able to get in and out of the club, within a 45 minute period, and this can have a great impact on user adherence since they know they don›t have to dedicate as much time each week to achieving their goals. The clubs also like it because the users are spending less time within the facility with each visit and it means that they can timetable more group training classes within any set period.

Ask Yourself This... O

k, the first paragraph of a new column should be bold enough to literally grab you by the throat, smack you repeatedly about the face, capture your attention and thus force you to unwittingly read on. I am going to try a different tact and simply ask you a question that is so often forgotten about by fitness professionals and other participants of the human race. Why are we here? It is such a simple, powerful question and one that has been debated for thousands of years by scholars, religious leaders, politicians, scientists and personal trainers alike. The reason I dare to pose such a question is because over the past decade the number of fitness professionals in the UK has grown significantly and yet we are in a midst of an obesity epidemic that seemingly cannot be controlled. So yet again I pose the age old question. Why are we here?

Why

As a fitness professional with almost two decades worth of experience in the health and fitness industry, I am proud to have witnessed the evolution of the personal trainer from very basic beginnings to the professional, science based, biomechanically

focused individuals prowling the gym floor and hospital rehabilitation suites. There is no longer a definition that can accurately and wholly explain what a personal trainer is because the role has evolved into a

“A great instructor could ultimately transcend the confines of a studio, develop themselves into a brand and become an ambassador for fitness. multi-faceted position of responsibility that affects clients on physiological, psychological and spiritual levels. But having better personal trainers, with more tools, with amazing marketing to create an even bigger fitness platform still does not fix the obesity problem or answer our initial question. Why are we here? There is something electric about the vibe you get from a packed group fitness class where everyone is involved. An average instructor will affect those people

Are

We Here

?

by Richard Callender

participating in their class by virtue of them simply providing a service. A good instructor will create an exciting, addictive environment within the class, within the club and affect many as their reputation grows. A great instructor could ultimately transcend the confines of a studio, develop themselves into a brand and become an ambassador for fitness. But does that tick all the necessary boxes and answer the question? Probably not. Why are we here? In short, I have no idea. But I do feel that we have a duty of care to clients, class goers and people you communicate with on a daily basis on both social media and face-to-face. The fitness industry is one of the most exciting careers to be in, and when we work together we are able to create spectacles and events that inspire hundreds, raise thousands and affect millions. One of the main problems is that the industry has become a jungle; constantly moving and changing, full of many different types of species and tribes all facing the same survival tests, and yet very few working together. Personal training tribes battle group fitness tribes; nutrition and weightloss tribes fight for supremacy; prechoreography Vs freestyle tribes; dance class Vs dance class and so on. Without trying to sound too much like Martin Luther King Jr. I have a dream, and I believe that one day we will all get along as one powerful fitness entity to affect obesity on a national and global level. But until then, let us all try and be open with our ideas and promote each other in a show of unity that can only ever do us a service on an individual, group, regional and national level. Why are we here? Because this is the fitness industry and we chose to be here...

I’d like to teach the world

to row... PART TWO: NEW MARKETS

G

yms are world class at making young, fit and thin people feel fabulous and all too often those outside of this target market are ignored. These special populations can provide a very loyal and rewarding client base which is worth catering for.

Older Clients Are incredibly satisfying to work with as you can make a huge impact on their functionality and subsequent quality of life through rowing. Why Older Clients Love Rowing: They’re sitting down – so no issue with balance. They generally get better – at this stage of life there are few things that they are getting better at, rowing can be one of them.

about exercise – they can be excellent at rowing because generally the bigger you are the better your split – so a big boost for self-esteem. Over 10 weeks you can get most clients up to 20minutes of rowing at a higher intensity then walking or cycling. Good Sessions 20minute challenge – very simple in week one start with 2minutes, add on 2 minutes a week for 9 more weeks to get to 20minutes of continuous rowing. Aim to maintain the rate at 20-24 and a good split would be 2.15-2.25. 5mins, 3mins, 1mins rowing with 3 minutes of fast walking recovery– as the time reduces the intensity should increase, again keep the rating solid at 20-24 and the splits consistent.

It feels good – to be using the whole body.

Pre/Post Natal

Good Sessions

Assuming that you have the correct qualifications and understand the warning signs of this population rowing is a great movement pattern. Focus very much on posture and breathing and flip the screen back so that your client is self-monitoring (working under an effort level of 7/10) as opposed to targeting splits.

How far in 10 strokes – after a good warm up, ask your client to row as far as they can in 10 strokes, rest for 1minute and repeat – 3-6 times. The key to this is to rate low (<22) and use the legs. 5minutes rowing x 2-3 – at a low rating (r20-24) being as consistent as possible, aiming to keep the split within 2seconds of target (e.g. if target is 2.20 per 500m, every stroke should be between 2.18 and 2.22).

Overweight Clients it’s impossible not to notice that there is an obesity epidemic– the rowing machine is a great piece of kit for this population because: Overweight clients are often self-conscious

Good Sessions Depends completely on the client – but I will tend to work for no longer than 10 minutes with this group and sometimes a lot less e.g.2-3 x 2minutes. Focus on breathing out at the end of each stroke and engaging the legs – take the focus away from the upper body completely.

ATTENTION

Gym Owners, Health Operators, PT’s & Fitness Professionals that teach group exercise…….We need you!

How Do You turn a £197 Investment in to £6,000.00 in 10 weeks or less?

As you know, Kettlercise® IS THE big thing that’s being talked about everywhere in the fitness industry. It’s a high volume, low intensity, all over body workout delivered in a class format over 50-minutes of heart pumping, fat burning and muscle toning and since its release Kettlercise® has very quickly established itself as a market leader and is taking the fitness industry by storm. Kettlercise® delivers EXACTLY what it promises to deliver in more ways than one. It delivers lightening speed results to class attendees but Gym Owners and Fitness Professionals everywhere are amazed at how quickly they see a return on investment.

Why you should put Kettlercise® in to your gym schedule I was chatting on the phone the other day to one of our Kettlercise Instructors asking how it was going and the conversation went a bit like this: Me: So, how many people are you getting attending your Kettlercise® class? Instructor: 40 Me: That’s’ a good number. How many classes are you doing a week? Instructor: We’re currently doing 3 classes a week and could do more. 40’s good but it could be better. I’ve 10 to 12 people on a waiting list. I just need more space and more staff! The rest of the conversation we talked shop but after I put the phone down I had a thought and I picked up my calculator. Let me share with you what I did. The pricing for Kettlercise® classes ranges from around £4.00 per hour to £10 per hour dependant upon where they are in the country. Let’s pick a low range figure of £5 per person that attends a Kettlericse® class, and then let’s do a simple calculation……

£5 x’s 40 people = £200.00

200 x’s 3 classes per week= £600.00 10 weeks x’s £600.00 = £6,000.00

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. I started to look at the figures a bit more over 12 months or written in a different way - 52 weeks. Let’s allow time for Christmas, bank holidays, holidays and sickness and let’s look at it over 48 weeks to be realistic.

£600 x’s 48 weeks = £28, 800.00 Remember, that’s 3 classes a week or written a different way – 3 hours a week! If I’d started this letter with “how do you earn £29k a year doing 3 hours per week” you would probably have not read past the first line - you’d think I was nuts!!. In fact, I daren’t start the letter with that amount because it was so unbelievable to me initially.

I’ve had to expand my business and recruit other instructors.

The

Digital Personal Trainer Welcome to the Digital Revolution

B

efore his death in 2011, Steve Jobs, the visionary leader of tech giant Apple quoted in his biography that a new era was beginning, an era where the two industries of biology and technology collide to form a revolution of health, fitness and wellbeing. Having never said much about biology when he was alive and creating revolutionary products such as the MacBook, iPod, iPhone and iPad, Jobs’ realisation came as he was dying of his long fought battle with pancreatic cancer. “I think the biggest innovations of the 21st century will be at the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning”- Steve Jobs. Technology is no stranger to disruption and has played a part in revolutionising numerous industries in its wake including banking, publishing, media and marketing to name just a few, and Jobs’ prophesy of an innovation led technology disrupted health and fitness world is at a tipping point and you need to be ready for it.

The Perfect Storm of Technology Advancement Each day a new digital health product designed to help us live healthier and

happier lives is released to the market making the PT toolbox of the future a complex system of smartphones, sensors, apps, data, GPS and biotech.

it’s known) to an online database where the user – or their PT - can passively track and monitor it over time via the web or a mobile app.

CES, the large annual consumer electronics trade event held in Las Vegas, exemplified this when at its 2013 event reported a 25 % increase in companies exhibiting digital health products than on the previous year.

Likewise Withings has a Wi-Fi enabled blood pressure monitor that similarly sends its data to the cloud and a user can track both weight and blood pressure variables alongside one another.

These technologies are empowering people to understand their own bodies in ways which were previously not possible. New health devices and services are providing data about the human body in many ways from analysing cognitive functions including mood and stress levels to the sleep quality we are receiving each night to information about our heart such as RHR, blood pressure and heart rate variability.

Other digital health innovations are of the more disruptive barrier breaking kind. Breezing, a new consumer device planned for launch in May this year, will provide real-time data on metabolic rate. A user simply blows in to the Breezing device multiple times throughout the day and the accompanying iPhone app analyses the metabolic rate and creates a diet and exercise plan based on the user’s goals using the data collected.

These innovations can often be a technologically advanced model of a previously tried and tested health device. For example the Withings bathroom scales provide information that regular digital scales have done for some time including weight, BMI and body fat percentage. The difference is that these scales are Wi-Fi enabled and send the user’s weight data over the internet (or in ‘the cloud’ as

The Zeo Sleep Analyser, a headband device worn while sleeping, analyses the brain as you sleep for REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, deep sleep and light sleep. REM and deep sleep are categorised as high quality sleep as the former helps cognitive function and the latter with physiological function such as muscle repair. The Zeo syncs the sleep data to a mobile app which

Zeo Sleep Analyser

then records it to an online database that allows the user paint a picture of their sleep quality and habits. I have spent around 200 nights using the Zeo and initially found that the time spent in REM sleep was low. Important to help the brain process information I wanted to increase it and found that people who are deficient in vitamin D often don’t get enough REM sleep. This was around the time I first analysed my blood and through this analysis I found that I was vitamin D deficient, which of course correlated with the sleep data. I began supplementing vitamin D at around 5,000IUs per day and coupled with a number of other lifestyle changes I introduced including not working at my laptop directly before bed my REM sleep began to improve and I have since seen a 75% increase compared with the initial analysis. Add Sleep Consultant to your ever growing list of services.

Optimising Your Client’s Performance Using Blood Bioanalytics The blood is a window of information in to the human body and there are numerous biomarkers in it that can be both measured and tracked to ensure that optimal levels are present for peak performance. Having the correct levels of haemoglobin, folic acid and creatine kinase helps strength and endurance. Glucose, total cholesterol and triglycerides can aid the body’s energy and metabolism, and optimal levels of vitamin

D and calcium maintains bone and muscle health. I measure around 20 biomarkers in my blood and advise others to do the same also. US based services such as InsideTracker provide a platform where the blood data can be uploaded and tracked alongside their research-based interpretation of optimal levels. Using InsideTracker my analysis found I was deficient in vitamin D (explaining my lack of REM sleep), vitamin B12 and iron. Using this information I have made the appropriate diet and supplementation changes to increase these levels to the required amount. PTs have an opportunity to provide bioanalytical services like this to people embarking on a lifestyle and exercise programme using these platforms for on-going analysis of the blood’s biomarkers.

Using DNA to Determine Long Term Health and Fitness Goals Personal genomics is a growing industry that will revolutionise health and fitness. Ever since the first genome was sequenced research has found – and continues to find - connections between our genes and certain diseases, bodily traits and ancestry. One such company that offers this type of service is 23andMe, a US based personal genomics and biotechnology company that provides personal genotyping which, unlike

“I think the biggest innovations of the 21st century will be at the intersection of biology and technology. A new era is beginning” -Steve Jobs.

Breezing

full genome sequencing, one million of the body’s three billion genes are analysed. I have personally used the service and have advised a number of other individuals to do so also, as the results can be enlightening. The physiological part of the analysis found that I had no working copies of the ACTN3 gene which makes a protein called Alphaactini-3 found in fast-twitch muscle fibre. Most world-class sprinters have been found to have at least one or two working copies of the ACTN3 genotype so this confirmed that a career in 100m has never been destined for me. That doesn’t mean my running performance is weak however, but more suitable to endurance type events since many world-class endurance athletes are, like myself, found without any working copies of ACTN3. Low and behold, endurance running is more my thing as opposed to sprinting. From a disease point of view I found that I’m at a slightly higher risk of contracting Alzheimer’s disease than average, but at

a lesser risk than the average of contracting prostate cancer, chron’s disease and melanoma among others. The benefits of personal genotyping are numerous. Knowing you’re at an increased risk of a certain disease can help you make changes to your lifestyle to control it and PTs

“PTs will need to add data analysis to their repertoire of skills” have the opportunity to advise their clients from a genomic level to stay healthy for as long as possible. Increasingly personal genotyping will be a core requirement for anyone serious about their health. The continued drop in price and new discoveries being made through DNA will soon make personal genotyping a first step in a person’s new journey of health.

The Body Data Dashboard and the PT Data Scientist The old adage ‘if you can’t measure it you can’t manage it’ has never been truer for digital health. The data provided by these new technologies helps people understand their bodies in ways which were previously thought not possible. Tracking data will become easy as sensors increasingly become passive and ubiquitous. The difficult part will be developing the skills to understand, interpret and make meaningful health based decisions on the data collected. PTs will need to add data analysis to their repertoire of skills. Understanding correlations and regressions will soon be a standard part of the advisory process when helping individuals reach their fitness goals. Luckily help is at hand as new services are introduced to the PT industry such as Tictrac – www.tictrac.com – which provides a data dashboard for the human body. This personal analytics platform allows PTs to store and layer their clients’ health using data visualisation to make meaningful analysis. The PT has access to each of their clients’ Tictrac dashboard and can analyse and advise on their diet, progress and goals from a very detailed level. Everything from mood, stress, distance run, calories consumed and sleep quality can be tracked and overlaid to see patterns and correlations.

23andMe

The digital health revolution is the gateway to improve health at all levels through technology and innovation. Health and fitness will be the first industry to experience both the disruption and opportunity this will bring. For the PT that embraces change, can explain the complexities of technology and can implement digital health tools to help their clients, the opportunities are aplenty. Inside Tracker

What is REPs?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) is the independent public Register that recognises the qualifications and expertise of exercise instructors throughout the UK. Established for over 10 years, REPs exists to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers, protecting the public and bringing credibility to the sector, and ensuring that exercise professionals meet the minimum National Occupational Standards for the knowledge, competencies and skills required to perform their specific roles.

“Register of Exercise Professionals allows me, as a Training Co-ordinator, to very easily assess an individual’s quality and expertise from the outset. Register of Exercise Professionals is essential to David Lloyd Leisure as it ensures our premium business only recruits and trains the very best Personal Trainers, Health & Fitness Coaches and group exercise professionals” Sally Fisher, Campus & Product Assistant, David Lloyd

What will you get out of becoming a REPs member? • Enhanced employability • Recognition within the industry • Endorsed qualifications that will assist you throughout you working career. Many employers, such as David Lloyd, Fitness First, Virgin Active, Nuffield Health & Fitness, DC Leisure and GLL, expect their instructors and trainers to be REPs registered.

Packages and services: • You will get discounts on high quality products and services such as gym clothing and equipment • Access to our online members only area and activepassport™ • Opportunities for Continual Professional Development (CPD) • A range of services to support your career and business!

Safeguarding the public: The register has nearly 30,000 exercise professionals in the UK to date. We would encourage any instructor to become REPs registered as there has been an increase in clients checking the credentials of a trainer or instructor before hiring them.

Why not transfer your skills abroad? Ian Field is now building a PT business in Spain.

“I started my course in August 2011 with Premier Training in Crawley, West Sussex. I successfully passed my Gym Instructor and Personal Training courses, as well as Exercise Referral and moved to Spain in December 2011. Being a member of REPs has definitely helped me build my reputation since moving abroad. It shows that I am affiliated to a professional organisation, which strives to promote safe exercise and continued improvement. The website is particularly useful and helps me to look for other courses which would be relevant to me and my client base here in Spain. I can also keep updated with news from REPs via the regular newsletters.”- Ian Field, PT, CDA Fitness.

Become a better health coach with Institute for Integrative Nutrition nutritional training

A

s a personal trainer, you are in the business of making people look good. As you probably know, the “ice” around the 6 pack can only melt if eating is under control. How comfortable do you feel answering specific questions about diet? The Institute for Integrative Nutrition offers a year-long online health coaching course that covers many skills invaluable to personal trainers and fitness instructors. It covers nutrition with a holistic approach exploring over 100 dietary theories, like South Beach Diet, Paelo, Raw Food, and the Zone. It also develops key coaching skills such as effective listening, motivational interviewing and goal setting. The final aspect of the course is business management, including effective marketing to attract new clients and how to retain them. It packs a large punch overall but each week of study only requires 5-6 hours of your time. After 6 months, you are ready to start coaching clients and increasing your income. This might be in conjunction with fitness training or as a separate service offered to clients via phone, Skype, or email. There are four exams over the year to ensure you stay on track with the material.

30

www.ptmagazine.co.uk

The benefits of being a health coach with Institute for Integrative Nutrition: 1. Knowledge of over 100 dietary theories with lifetime reference library access- This means that when a client says they follow a particular fad diet, you can be confident in discussing the pros and cons and help tweak it to suit their specific needs. Along with all the known dietary theories, the IIN course teaches Bioindividuality. The basic idea is that there is no right universal diet theory. Each person needs to find something that works for them to reach their goals. Perhaps it is combining 2 popular fad diets, or having a vegetarian add white fish to their meals once a week for more natural protein. 2. Learn how to be a better listenerCurrent student Cecile Weigle (www. elitebodywellness.com) believes “nutritional counselling is a huge part of a client’s long-term success and healthy lifestyle changes”. She feels the life coaching aspect to the curriculum will help her guide clients through their mental barriers to success. Listening to their concerns and experiencing is a large part of leading

clients to success, whether discussing diet, a specific joint pain, or strategies for an upcoming race. 3. Expand your brand while developing your marketing and business skills- Health coaching doesn’t have to be done face-toface. This takes your potential client base to a global level. Many of the skills taught by IIN would help any wellness business grow. IIN provides a free website, logo, and handouts to students to give to clients as part of your services. Personal trainers with a strong knowledge of nutrition and health coaching will be in demand as humans keep growing larger. The NHS estimates over £5 billion is spent on excess weight issues each year. Think outside the box to create your perfect niche and you will soon be helping people all over the world. J

oanna Kabbani has been a professional fitness trainer for over 20 years working with a large variety of clients across the world. In the 1990s Joanna created her own choreographed dance style workouts, becoming a pioneer of what is now known as ‘Cardio Funk’.

• Versatile and portable – five versions of the AB-MXR weighing 1kg, 2kg, 3kg, 4kg and 5kg that are all the same size and easily fit into a standard handbag or rucksack. Available as individual units or now as a complete set with stand!

Today, she is a private trainer and lifestyle coach to many of London’s VIPs, top business professionals and celebrities. Her latest venture sees her launch a stunningly simple, highly effective piece of training equipment that is set to revolutionise the abdominal workout.

AB MXR TRAINING: Kabbani Lifestyle has achieved a Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) training provider licence, which allows fitness professionals to earn continual professional development (CPD) points when they become AB-MXR trainers. The AB-MXR offers so much versatility that we created two CORE-MXR courses: a one day course for gym instructors and personal trainers and a two day course that goes into more detail and also covers group exercise. The courses are stand-alone, but there are plans to tie in more specialist courses such as pre- and post- natal workouts to give trainers great scope for skills and knowledge enhancement. For more information on AB MXR and how it can be integrated into your PT business model, visit www.ab-mxr.com or call 0800 002 9557

The motivation to create a professional product was based on Joanna’s extensive experience working with clients who loathed working their abs. Having tried her own rudimentary device with clients she found they loved it and were getting amazing results. The AB-MXR is stylish and fits easily in ladies’ handbags and men’s rucksacks, making it the perfect travelling companion. AB MXR core benefits: • Total body workout – can be used for hundreds of exercises as demonstrated in the AB-MXR DVD, facilitating a full body and deep core workout • Maximises abdominal crunches and encourages exercise discipline – forces your body into the correct position and alignment helping to focus the effort on the abdominal muscles ensuring each crunch is as effective as possible • Reduces injury risk – provides the optimal support to the back, neck and head, and helping significantly reduce the use of the neck and spine, removing excessive strain on your back and neck • Affordable – represents great value for money, combining – in one device – all the benefits of its nearest rivals (cruncher, kettle bells, medicine ball)

STAND PRICE £200 plus VAT • Operational benefits to retailers • Can be sold across multiple channels – the product concept is easy for customers to grasp allowing for potential sales online, in branches, call centres and mobile apps • Can be used on its own or in combination with other products already being sold (eg. Swiss ball, ankle weights, Bosu, EasyTone Step), complementing existing fitness product ranges • Easy to transport, distribute and stack on shelves.

Bulgarian Bag T

he Bulgarian Bag has only been around since 2005 but has already made quite an impact. Escape Fitness offer two types of bag - the Professional and the Fitness. Both give a total body workout which makes it the must have piece of training equipment. Invented by Ivan Ivanov, the Bulgarian Bag was initially invented to train Greco-Roman wrestlers for the Olympics but, regardless of fitness levels, the Bulgarian Bag is a brilliant piece of kit. Escape Fitness have a dedicated bag website (www.bulgarian-bag.co.uk) that will tell you everything you need to know. It will show you how the Bulgarian Bag strengthens and increases the muscular

endurance of your grip, wrists, arms, shoulders, back, legs, rotational muscles, core musculature, coordination and overall shoulder and joint mobility. As a PT, the Bulgarian Bag is ideal. It can be used in small/large group fitness class, Move It spaces, rugby clubs, MMA, indoor or outdoor training as part of a boot camp and for Cross Training use. With a unique array of possible exercises, it is a powerful training tool that can be applied to achieve numerous different training goals, providing an amazing mental and physical challenge. It is particularly effective at targeting the posterior chain and great for grip strength, endurance and forearm conditioning. Similar to a kettlebell, it can act as a total body workout with just one bag. Indeed, it can be incorporated with kettlebells or TRX™ and all Cross Training products. For beginners, Escape Fitness Core Bags would complement the Bulgarian Bag perfectly and provide an engaging and interesting alternative to more traditional free weight equipment.

With the range of exercises also unlike anything that is possible with traditional free weights (the Bulgarian Bag offers movements that cannot be duplicated with any other tool and allows an athlete to move in all three planes of motion during a single movement!). The attraction of the bag is plain to see and is great way to set your PT classes apart from the competition. Available in five different weights, it’s recommended you choose a Bulgarian Bag that’s best suited to your current strength and overall athletic ability. There is a cumulative training effect with the bag, most exercises are designed for short rest periods, so don’t let the weight of the bag fool you! The varied weight range and programming allows users of all levels to benefit from using the bag means it is an awesome tool to use in studio group exercise sessions with the colour code bags making weight selection easy in a busy club environment. The Essential TRX® Workout for Runners

R

unning can be a repetitive sport, which can result in overuse of certain muscles and tightness in the body. With marathon season upon us and more people than ever seeking personal trainers to tackle running challenges, it’s important to incorporate specific exercises into your training that will work the whole body in several planes of movement, counteracting the repetitive running motion.

Matt Gleed, TRX Master Trainer, said; “TRX® Suspension TrainingTM builds strength in your legs which helps endurance, and boosts your power to give you a strong start and finish in races. It also strengthens your core which will keep you upright and breathing freely even when the going gets tough. Matt recommends these three powerful exercises to build muscular strength to carry you home during your running.

SINGLE LEG SQUAT To perform a single leg squat, you need to hold onto the TRX handles facing the anchor point, anddrop down into a single leg squat position as deep as you can manage, aiming to get the hips lower than your knee. Start with 30 seconds under tension and build up to 60 seconds Tip: You can use the TRX to help you up if needed. For extra bite try the last 10 seconds with a jump

SUSPENDED LUNGE Start with your back foot lace down in the foot cradles, keeping your body upright drive your suspended foot backwards so you drop into a lunge position and return to standing position. Build up your time under tension start at 30 seconds and build up to a minutes worth ofrepetitions. Tip: Try not to put too much load on the back leg as you drop down into a lunge

SUSPENDED LUNGE WITH REACH Start in the same position as the suspended lunge but rotate 90 degrees so you are facing side onto the anchor point with the closest leg to the anchor point the supporting leg. Drop into a lunge position and drive your trailing leg behind and across your body. With your opposite arm reach in the same direction. This powerful movement is great for runners as it hits the glute medius which is important in the protection of the knees, a weak glute medium creates more tension on the ITB band which then pulls on the outside part of the knee, and often creates patella femoral pain. A strong glute medius can greatly reduce the risk of knee pain when running. Tip: Push your leg across and behind your body to help get into position and load the glute medius as you drop down into a lunge.

The TRX Suspension Trainer is an incredibly versatile, portable, resistance training system consisting of nylon webbed straps, handles and anchors which can be attached to virtually any secure anchor point. The equipment was created by Randy Hetrick, who served as a US Navy SEAL Squadron Commander; enduring some of the toughest training with one of the most elite special

forces teams in the world. He developed Suspension Training as a revolutionary method of leveraged bodyweight exercise. The complete line of TRX products, training programmes, education tools and accessories can be purchased directly from TRX at www.trxtraining.com/uk

Sports Injuries & their Prevention Sammy Margo Chartered Physiotherapist MSc MCSP HPC MMACP AACP

T

here has been a huge increase in the number of sports injuries over the past 15 years and unsurprisingly it is not due to people doing more sport. If anything exercising keeps injuries at bay and under the guidance of a personal trainer injuries can be prevented. One of my biggest concerns is that most of your clients will be spending 8-10 hours per day sitting at a desk. Most of them are weaker than ever, and have redundant core muscles, tight hip flexors, short hamstrings and rounded shoulders. Weakness is the new epidemic and it all boils down to our sedentary lifestyle. Making up for it by exercising will help prevent injuries. Most of the people that I treat have had a change in their life. A new job, increased mileage, a change of surface, a new baby, a new bed, a longer commute, more stress, or even summer holidays can disrupt a training program which may result in injury. Research has shown that exercising in fact does prevent injuries and studies show that exercise protects joints from damage and pain. Adults who run consistently can expect to have 25% less musculoskeletal pain and less arthritis than non-runners when they get older. The study looked at consistent runners versus yoyo runners and found that consistent runners who ran at least 6 hours per week on average got less pain by their 60s and 70s as compared to yoyo runners. If your clients exercise consistently, their joints, tendons, ligaments, discs and muscles get used to the habit of the exercise. The body accommodates and copes with the demands.
It is the yo-yo exercisers who take up training and then drop it repeatedly over a number of years who end up with injuries. Sammy’s 5 Top Sports Injuries and their Prevention.

1. Muscle Pulls

Causes: Muscle pulls are very common. Small tears occur within that lead to a strain when the muscle is stretched too far or exceeds its tensile load. Inadequate warm up exercises, muscle fatigue, lack of flexibility, and muscle weakness. Symptoms: Pain in the muscle area on applying pressure, stretch or load, swelling or inflammation, weakness and soreness. Treatment: RICE* immediately as well as gentle pain free stretches after 48 hrs. Commence pain free activity as soon as possible as that will help increase the circulation and heal the area.

Prevention: The best way to prevent pulling a muscle is to stretch properly before and after exercising and avoid working out when the muscle is fatigued or weakened.

2. Low Back Pain

Causes: Usually lower-back-pain pain results from sedentary lifestyle, poor training techniques, weakness and poor preparation. Leg length discrepancy, poor lower limb biomechanics and poor footwear can also cause back pain. Symptoms: Back pain is usually associated with some muscle spasm which restricts movements such as bending or straightening and is often painful to sit as well
Prevention: Some lower-back injuries cannot be prevented, but warming up properly before exercising will greatly reduce the risk as will having a good strong core as well as gluteal muscles. Treatment: Lower-back pain can be treated with rest from the aggravating activity and gentle pain free stretching. Also applying heat to the area can help reduce the muscle spasm and hence the pain. Taping and using a temporary lumbar support can help reduce the muscle spasm

3.Shoulder Impingement

Causes: Exercise that involves a lot of overhead movement may result in shoulder impingement. This usually comes about because of poor shoulder and scapular muscle control. Symptoms: Pain, weakness, stiffness in the shoulder area. Prevention: It can be avoided by strengthening the muscles by specific weight training exercises as well as checking out your client’s work station. Treatment: RICE treatment in the acute stages then a graded rehab strengthening program for the shoulder and scapular muscles.

4. Runner’s Knee

Causes: Knee injuries comprise about 55% of all sports injuries. It is often caused by weak quadriceps, tightness of some other related muscle groups, imbalances around the knee, poor pelvic control incorrect footwear and overtraining. Symptoms: Knee pain below the kneecap and on the sides of the kneecap, particularly with deep knee bend or prolonged sitting, and swelling in the knee are some of the symptoms. It is often noticed on climbing stairs. We have an expression ‘stairs, chairs, cars and baths’ Prevention: Correct footwear, grade

the exercise program; use a softer running surface such as an indoor track rather than hard pavement; strengthen your quadriceps and gluteal muscles through weight appropriate training. Stretch before and after the activity. Treatment: Treatment options will vary from rest, pain medication, strength training exercises, taping and the use of knee supports/braces.

5. Ankle Sprains

Causes: If the foot accidentally turns inwards, it stretches and tears the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Symptoms: Immediate pain at the site with swelling over outside of ankle. The injured area becomes tender, swollen and may feel unstable.
Treatment: RICE immediately for 48 – 72 hours, wearing ankle braces during the healing process. Once healed increase ankle control with balance exercises
Prevention: Regular exercises to strengthen muscles around the ankles.

Here we look at a lightweight and easy-to-wear strap recommended for illotibial band syndrome, runner’s knee, patella tendonitis, arthritis, Osgood-Schlatters disease and quad misalignment. It offers pain relieving compression to three areas: the upper strap and tube work on ITB and quad alignment; the side compression helps with patella tracking, and the lower strap and tube deals with the patella tendon, relieving patella tendonitis. The straps are adjustable to ensure personalized fit and compression and for noncompromising mobility.

The Food We Eat…

What’s the

real cost?

A

s more and more of the foods that we eat are modified, processed, reconstituted and changed beyond recognition, the public health consequences become frightening. The prospects for us if this continues, threatens to turn back the millennia of hitherto nutritional improvements to the human diet and overwhelm the benefits provided by modern medicine. Thus for the first time in known history, the longevity of mankind is likely to decrease.

42

www.ptmagazine.co.uk

Fewer people are eating a diet that is comprised primarily of natural sources, and this decline is happening on a global scale at an astonishing pace. One such concern is the toxic effects of these highly adapted edible products that many people now consume as the mainstay of their diet. Considering food therefore not simply as a source of energy, but rather as a fundamental contributor to either health or illness, is the concept at the heart of clinical nutrition.

Our health and what we eat are intrinsically linked; and this is incontrovertible. When a nutrient imbalance occurs, there is a biochemical consequence normally resulting in what we term disease. Too much or too little of the 13 vitamins, 14 minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants, macro nutrients: protein, carbohydrate, fat and water, for too long, will lead to such an imbalance and this will have inevitable health consequence. If prolonged, this will ultimately lead to death.

The approach of clinical nutrition is to ensure this imbalance does not occur for any lengthy period of time. It is primarily using nutrition effectively as a prophylactic against many of the modern nutritional ailments (CVD, Cancer, Stroke, Liver disease, bone disease etc) and to improve the condition of those people already affected; although this is far less effective. Consider the approach to clinical nutrition rather like you would other assaults on the body. Were you to bang your head hard on a wall each day, then over time you would damage the brain. Stopping banging your head on the wall would cease the damage but would do little to repair the damage done. Similarly, a long term biochemical imbalance in the body will cause damage to tissues. Fortunately many other parts of the body are better at healing than the brain and when balance is restored, often healing can begin, albeit slowly.

“The approach of clinical nutrition is to ensure this imbalance does not occur for any lengthy period of time” In the case of vascular disease and in particular atherosclerosis (which is still the major killer in the UK) it may well take 30 years of poor diet to lead to a furring up of the arteries and a stiffening of the normally elastic arterial wall. As the endothelium weakens under this assault, ruptures are more likely and thus MI’s or stroke frequently accompany chronic CVD. Whilst atherosclerosis is reversible with the introduction of a healthy diet (in particular high antioxidant, high fibre, low fat low energy) the repair process will take years. So how are we going to convince our clients that this lifelong approach to protecting our most precious infrastructure is worth the trouble? Well a good start is

to educate them on the chronic toxic effect of many of the culprits. We need to ensure we set out the deleterious effects of the products and at the same time clearly show how the body is unable to effectively selfheal in the absence of a balance of the right nutrients. There is nothing difficult, mysterious or esoteric about clinical nutrition, in fact it is common sense. It is how we get the message across and how we inspire clients to see and feel the link between nutrition and health and to accept that the most highly evolved organism in the known universe is unlikely to thrive on Junk. This is our challenge. Please let me have your thoughts on how PT’s and others in the wellness sector can make a difference. Visit www.discovery.uk.com.

Register of Exercise Professionals expands global partnerships

I

have recently returned form America and am excited to report that the UK is helping lead the way in the global development of exercise registers. As part of the International Confederation of Registers, we have been working closely with New Zealand and Australia, and have now been joined by South Africa, Canada, the UAE and by the end of the year hope to be joined by the US. This growth has fantastic consequences for personal trainers, gym and group exercise instructors who are part of the Register of Exercise Professionals, as opportunities and recognition will increase around the world for our community. The reciprocity that will take place between registers will allow registration to be recognised in the participating countries, opening career paths that in the past would have meant time consuming and costly retraining. As well as offering new travelling opportunities, the alignment of international registers will also offer increased recognition, increasing the authority of the register within the UK. We are sure that the exchange of expertise between the countries will add value to the industry, exchanging new methods,

44

www.ptmagazine.co.uk

techniques and ideas within a global community. The international coordination mirrors the unification of the industry we are seeing here in the UK. One of the major problems we addressed with REPs was the confusion within the industry. We have streamlined the sector that has previously been confusing to customers, employees and those looking to break into the industry. Personal training and Fitness Instructing qualifications can be awarded by more than 10 awarding organisations, and the situation is exacerbated by the fact that there are many times more training providers. This has made finding a suitable instructor or personal trainer a daunting task, as without significant expertise or research, it has not been immediately clear how the qualifications equate, or which are suitable. The register provides one list of members who are guaranteed to be amply qualified, meaning consumers do not have to undertake an arduous search to find a personal trainer. Equally, people looking to break into the market are not faced with the choice of a huge number of

qualifications. REPs checks qualifications and so all professionals need to do is select the registration category, which includes Gym, Exercise to Music and Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer. Finally, the register has significantly increased accountability. All REPs members sign up to a Code of Ethical Conduct which if they are found to have breached they can be removed from the register. By having one nationally recognised list, incompetent personal trainers cannot bounce from one organisation to another, slipping through the net. We firmly believe the streamlining of the market has also increased professionalism. Our concern is for the consumer and their ability to make an informed decision about their instructor or personal trainer.

Personal Trainer

Insurance Do you need to be covered?

W

ith an 84% increase over the last five years in the number of Registered Exercise Professionals, business is clearly booming for Personal Trainers. However, many overlook an essential element of protecting that business – Insurance.

Why it is so important? As a Personal Trainer you need to provide training advice and care for all clients. The safety of clients is paramount, but the unfortunate fact of life is that accidents do happen. Although you may not be specifically at fault and you may have taken steps to mitigate the chances of accidents, the injured client may wish to pursue a claim for compensation, in which case you could be liable to pay costly legal fees and damages. Therefore, all Personal Trainers need to be covered for at least Public Liability and Professional Indemnity insurance to protect yourself and your business. In fact, this is so important you may find some organisations insist you have insurance cover before being allowed to train.

What are the different kinds of insurance and why are they relevant to Personal Trainers?

questioned when a client suffered an injury resulting from your advice, then you would be covered under Professional Indemnity.

Public Liability insurance covers you for any damage or legal costs arising from third party bodily injury or third party property damage. For example, if someone under your tuition injured themselves and brings a claim for compensation against you, then you would be covered under Public Liability.

With a physical occupation, the likelihood of an injury meaning that you cannot work for a period of time increases significantly. Loss of earnings insurance is an optional extra which can cover you for this eventuality.

Professional Indemnity insurance covers you for breaches of professional duty as a

“…you may find some organisations insist you have insurance cover before being allowed to train” result of negligent acts, errors or omissions – in other words, will insure you against any errors you make as a Personal Trainer. For example, if your coaching techniques were

It is not just your clients that can get injured or hurt during a session, you can too. Personal Accident insurance would cover you should this happen, and can provide for rehabilitation such as physiotherapy. Most Personal Trainers use sports kit or equipment daily. Equipment insurance can cover damage, loss and theft of equipment, and provision can be on a new-for-old basis.

Are there different types of cover available? There are several difference types of cover available, that vary dependent on monetary value of cover and how many different eventualities you are covered for. One company aiming to do something different is insure4sport with their specialist fixed price policies. Policies are incepted and maintained online and customers can build policies on the website to suit their own individual requirements. Policies can also be updated, upgraded or renewed online – making things as easy as possible for Fitness Instructors and Personal Trainers. All Fitness Professionals need to make sure they read the policy fine-print if they are conducting different types of sessions – some policies may only provide cover for specific classes. www.insure4sport.co.uk

BRAND

‘YOU’ L

ast issue, we spoke of knowledge only being 50% of the story when it comes to industry success. Another big part of the success equation is your individual brand as a trainer. How you represent yourself and conduct your ‘business’ determines who, and how many people interact with you. Both personally and professionally, you owe it to yourself to project a consistently high brand standard.

Defining the Indefinable Have someone in your mind that you admire in this industry. Chances are they have a very clear message and are known for it. The first step in a successful trainer is to understand ‘you’ better. When you can appreciate and sell yourself as your own unique brand of person, you’ll get buy-in from people before, during and after the courses you teach.

Defining Your Authentic Self Your best and happiest times as a trainer are realised when you stopping fighting against the fitness things you don’t like or believe in and go with what you are best at. You don’t need to be good at everything to be successful as a trainer. Know what your passions are in fitness and pursue only those. There will always be people wanting to learn from you if you coach with conviction.

Traps that Drag Us Away from Our Authentic Self It is easy to get way off track. There are a lot of traps out there luring us away from our authentic trainer-self including:

Doing What Others Want Us to Do Those with influence are often the culprit in this trap. They have preconceived notions of who we are and what we need to be doing. Usually they believe a certain path will deliver the best results. Either way, they impose their desires upon us. We fall into the trap of living, or at least trying to live someone else’s vision.

“appreciate and sell yourself as your own unique brand of person” Doing What We Think We Should Do Often we are sold the “only way to train”. These are the methods we should do because they are safe, practical and in demand. Is this truly living your authentic and best fitness career path for you? Doing what one should do rarely leads to discovering the real you. Doing What Is Popular It’s easy to start comparing yourself to others and feeling compulsion to modify your methods to fit certain fads or fashions. Don’t do it! It is best to blaze your own trail. Resisting this pressure to conform is very difficult. However, it is essential to avoid a trap that will lead us further from our authentic self. Doing What We’ve Always Done - Doing Nothing, Doing the Easy Thing Does anyone find themselves doing the same thing from one year to the

next – experiencing their own version of Groundhog Day? The easy thing to do is to live your life from one day to the next and one year to the next, but pretty soon, you may be questioning what you’ve accomplished in your life and whether or not you are where you thought you’d be by this point in your life. Take a bit of time to re-evaluate your message and what you stand for. Your ‘brand’ – who you are and what you do – will be the thing that attracts people to you. You’ll need to be clear, adaptable and open to feedback, but once you’re confident on your brand, you’ll find yourself coaching, networking and sharing from a complete point of confidence. When that happens, success is nothing but a natural progression.

Marketing Yourself as a

Personal Trainer M

any Personal Trainers admit that they couldn’t market their way out of a paper bag! They become Personal Trainers because they want to help people lose weight, reach their goals and live healthy lives. But the truth is, promoting a business is every bit as important as knowledge when it comes to gaining new clients and subsequently… more money. Without marketing, even the most experienced and skilled Personal Trainers will be desperate for work. That’s because even the best trainers won’t attract clients if their potential customers don’t know they exist. But can trainers market their businesses without spending a small fortune? Yep! It just requires some common-sense marketing strategies and a little thinking outside the box.

traffic lights. Nobody bothers to read them (if they can even see them!) and it will be a waste of money!

“Without marketing, even the most experienced and skilled Personal Trainers will be desperate for work”

Speak Out A great way to market your Personal Training business, as well as build on your reputation as an expert in the industry, is to speak at local Rotary clubs, church groups and civic associations. Hold a special session for these groups that focuses on safe weight loss, strength training or flexibility exercises. Take plenty of business cards along to hand out afterwards.

Flyer It

Find Your Inner Journalist

Approach your local coffee shops, offlicences and convenience stores with flyers advertising your business. Most local business owners will be happy to post them in either their windows or on dedicated message boards. Business owners like to see their fellow entrepreneurs succeed.

Placing an ad in a local newspaper can usually be done at a fairly reasonable rate. If you want to appear in the paper for free, you may want to consider volunteering to write a guest column. Most local papers are constantly searching for free copy to fill their pages!

N.B. Don’t get too enthusiastic and start sticking your flyers to lamp-posts or at the

NB. Make sure you provide real, accurate information. You may write a feature on

the best way to alleviate back pain or a bad back or the best ways to maintain a steady weight loss (which is also more likely to be read than a simple advertisement for your business). Include your business contact details and website so that engaged readers can contact you if they wish to.

Chat To Your Clients Don’t discount the value of positive wordof-mouth advertising. People are far more likely to believe the good things that their friends, family members and co-workers say about a business than they are the praises they read in a newspaper advertisement. Remind your current (and happy!) clients to spread the word about your services. Word of mouth marketing is sometimes the most powerful of them all. For some, marketing isn’t that much fun. But by taking the time out to sell yourself and your services, you will not only build on your credibility, but attract new clients along the way. And that is fun!

E S O R B A K NIC l Manager at Personal Trainer and Genera

Q: Why did you decide to become a personal trainer? A: I’ve always been an energetic and physical person. The natural channel was sports, specifically Martial Arts in which I trained and competed. As a teenager I couldn’t wait to leave school and the standard academia route. For me the 9-5 desk job existence didn’t appeal. I discovered that I could make a living from my passion for physical training as well as meeting and working with different people. Q: What are the advantages of working at The Gym Group as opposed to other gyms? A: Working for a fast growing company that has brought something innovative to what was becoming a stale market is refreshing and exciting. The opportunities to progress and recognition for personal success are far greater than other gym chains I have worked for. Q: What opportunities have you been given to develop your role and become a general manager?: As an Assistant Manager and Trainee General Manager, the infrastructure for training and development was solid

from the start. This included regular business and personal skills training to understand every aspect of the business and upskill as a manager.
